MARIO IF HE REAL #1-3 (6 2020) ===== "Mario if he real". a forced meme as of june 2020, but i'm behind on my creeps and this is fun. ---------- Mario 64 is connected to all other N64 games via hardware quantum tunneling which Nintendo was experimenting with at the time. There exists some basic coding which is evident across all N64 releases after Mario 64 which allows it to interact with these games in subtle ways. Data miners have been unearthing these secrets for years now but Nintendo has been keeping this information suppressed through intimidation tactics against hackers/leakers (Nintendo have notoriously taken action against fan projects which used modified code based on the original N64 library games). These changes would have been substantial, tweaking minor things in some games and unlocking entirely new and unseen content in others. This exciting new technology was an open industry secret in the late 90s and, according to some old Konami employees, was even emulated/parodied by Metal Gear Solid's Psycho Mantis using his "psychic abilities" to read the player's PS1 memory card. As early as 1998 however there were several lawsuits filed against Nintendo by children's parents who sued for "legal damages". While these lawsuits have been officialy expunged from public records as of today, they were apparently settled out of court for a substantial amount. As early as 1999, ex-Nintendo employees recall being instructed to erase any physical or digital records of the HQT (hardware quantum tunneling) technology from their files. In a leaked Nintendo business insider document released in 2010, CEO Satoru Iwata was quoted as saying (in response to questions about digital preservation of older Nintendo titles) that any game produced before 1999 had already been digitally preserved by Nintendo themselves and that any physical media are best left alone. Although very little documentation exists of the hardware today, it is very unlikely that it caused considerable financial or legal damage to Nintendo overall. Whether it exists or not remains as speculation. --- Psycho Mantis was able to do that as the game could read information from your console to see what games had recently been played on it... That's all. --- You know, this kind of reminds me of an idea I had for a creepypasta that would involve some special software that intensifies the feelings of games and makes them too intense to handle, and there is a giant cover-up for it and stuff, I just never got around to it and can't be bothered with it lately because I'm too busy writing for money. --- Hey /x/ I keep seeing this weird thing appear in the game. It looks like peach but it’s unfinished it’s solid white and has red hair and no face. Anyone know what’s up with that? --- I do not trust any game that legitimately has parallel universes off-camera you can visit, explanations be damned --- (img of soundcanvas sc-88 pro) Can someone explain the "Enchanted SC-88 samples"? I haven't seen any elaboration on it. --- Has anyone created a mod for SM64 yet that adds in all this creepy shit? The game's source code has been leaked entirely and people have picked it apart and studied it more thoroughly than any other video game in history so I can't imagine there not being some mods on the way that turn it into a Petscop-esque experience. --- > Even though this is a larp, there was something strange about the N64. The games were not always consistent and text and graphics would change constantly. The RAM capabilities weren't in line with the processor and GPU, which resulted in throttled performance. The games that utilised the RAM expansion pak were much more stable. ----- i know, i basically thought the same thing as you when i first saw these threads. i want there to be something, but think about how much coordinated autism has been focused on the game. like all the speed runners and mods n stuff. makes me think that there isnt much left, and no creepypasta content even gets posted in these lame threads. i guess a few bored people keep spamming them. the only thing i can say is the game always had a dream like quality to me, but its just cause its abstract, minimal, and creative. not scary or paranormal. i did hear that the development team was pushed so hard working on the game that a few of them almost had mental breakdowns or came close to being an hero. in case anyone else reads this check out some of the rom hacks, star road is pretty much good enough to feel like a sequel, lots of other good ones too --- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zjhtSeocXc [Embed] I just realized SM64 has a very Alejandro Jodorowsky type vibe to it >high contrasts, bright colors but still ominous >focus on odd, symmetrical interiors/exteriors >Jodorowsky has lots of explicit occultism, SM64 has lots of unexplained shit that makes people feel uneasy >None of the characters feel like "characters," just weird beings whose job it is to guide you deeper into the otherwise empty worlds --- Simple explanation is, it’s like making a creepy pasta that’s vague vs one that over explains. If you set out to make mysterious you can’t do it as well as what happens naturally. Super Mario 64 is an early 3D game. IMO it’s aged poorly compared to BK but whatever my point is that it’s early oddness makes it so weird/mysterious plus Nintendo while not trying too hard like they did with MM as you said they did have weird subtle details like the extra ball after defeating the King Bom-Omb --- ( asking questions about a photo of a small Spanish town ) NIntendo decided to use it as an unreachable background image in one of the levels of the game. The level of the game seems to provoke feelings of unease/dread in some players and there is ongoing speculation that that level is in fact an artificial-intelligence schematic of the human brain. --- ( wet dry world ) shiaaat... this level indeed left me with dread and unease.. it's been 20 some years I last played this game, but damn.. still remember that feeling right now very vividly --- I remember that part of the level really well, for some reason I always had very much fun going down there. But very strange when I think about it. --- ( tick tock clock img ) I'm not even joking about this, ever since I was a kid I remember very well there being two Rabbits-one very fat and large and one small-inside the glass part of the clock. It's been years since I thought about it but it's such an incredibly distinct and specific memory. I never saw them for myself, but somehow I just thought they were real. --- Yes Also Princess Luna is Sophia Notice how Princess Luna is more beautiful than Peach Nintendo is trying to tell you that praising Sophia takes you higher than praising Peach, also notice how Luna's domain extends across the universe whereas Peach is stuck within the realm of the mushroom kingdom THE SIGNS ARE ALL AROUND YOU BUT YOU DON'T LISTEN notice how bowser has an endless staircase, this is a joke, because even though mario disables the endless staircase he is still stuck in the endless cycle of chasing Peach WAKE UP --- >>25181737 .............. my brother and I had two stuffed rabbits, one big blue and fat and the other small and beige. We used to pretend they lived in the game... --- Nice to see the creepy vibes of Mario 64 brought to light even if most of it is just memes. Mario games to this day greatly influence my dreams for some odd reason, probably because of how prominent it was in my childhood. --- dont know why you'd think that, i really wanted to live there when i first played it, it looked cool living in a city underwater --- Wet Dry World was most likely a testing stage for underwater physics and game mechanics. --- Why doesn’t Luigi’s Mansion have these kinds of conspiracies? Like The Huntsman, Elh, the Kitchen Portrait Ghost, Luigi killing himself, E. Gadd is the villain, Dead children, Madame Clairvoya letting herself be captured, the phonograph, Bogmire is the Grim Reaper, depressed Luigi, Luigi being a murderer, “creature screech” There’s so much potential! --- what does all of this symbolism mean? why is nothing explained? Nintendo said that they wanted Majora to be mysterious but never will it be comparable to this. --- > Sunshine actually has SOUL, which 64 lacks it does, but it is also very poorly made. --- Yeah wasn't going to fall for it anyway bud. Aside from modded roms and skin swaps with BK/DK there really isn't anything spectacular in the real vanilla version on mario 64. The Luigi thing is bullshit, and all the rest I heard rumors about years ago were too. I mean yeah you can hack him in now easily, but it wasn't that way back in the day on a real rom. Aside from some out of bounds glitches there isn't anything worth mentioning in the vanilla game that I know of. I saw this thread and was like cool mario 64, but it seems to just be a bunch of fags circle jerking over a lame crappy pasta with the added autism of reply to this post or mom is oh no kilt. Uhh well... Sigh. Mario if he real --- You know it would have made more sense to do this with Luigi's mansion. Which is actually a great game, has a spooky vibe to it. I think it would be relatively easy to make a real scary mod for that one, just given the available assets. Its too bad it's geared toward ten year olds. But I guess the innocent charm of a sPoOkY environment was refreshing, you know compared to rated M survival horror games. I think the reason M64 is used is because it is incredibly recognizable, and it is incredibly easy to hack the game since many other 64 games share the same infrastructure. Some guy merged starfox fighter planes into fucking Zelda. Fake creepy pastas aside it would be cool to see a fan-made mario IP made that was made for adults. Of course fagtendo wouldn't like it but i bet a lot of fans would even if it was on a system from way back. Im sure there us a environment editor if some kind, but if we could get ahold of the full SDK for the 64 might be doable. Like you mentioned the fan made sequel, so there must be a way. --- ( how to get to forest ) build up speed then grab the bouncy box thing the extra momentum will send you soaring over the map with enough speed to get past the walls. after that you'll hear boo sounds and maybe even see broken assets but once you get far enough the game will either crash or you'll see it a frame before it crashes --- ===== MARIO IF HE REAL pt 2 (6 2020) ===== Some of these theories such as the Wario one, all of the pictures, Wet Dry world and the personalized copys. It kind of gives me the same feeling as the pink sky in MK64 and way Peach's Castle looks in MK64. Also always wondering what was over the hills in SM64. --- I want to know about Lakitu. Why is he filming Mario just for him getting cake with Peach? How did he know Mario was coming? Where did the film reel end up? --- the (DO NOT RESEARCH) thing is very interesting even if fake (wich is is) the images and videos made to back it up are soo uncanny and eerie that makes me want to exploit it. i love these kind of "something is odd/ocult but oddly familiar" kind of fiction specially in videogames. someone needs to do some rom-hacks to go along or write something (wich im thinking on doing). --- The Wario Apparition was created from the subconscious wishes to see him in Mario 64 that the shared desired caused him to appear as a horrifying half start in some copies of the game. That image is what its supposed to look like, but those who encountered it ingame can't even describe what it looked like as many suffer from memory loss and stroke-like symptoms. If you suspect you're seeing it ingame its suggested you shut the console off immediately because once you give it power by witnessing it, it gains power to begin manifesting itself in your reality. --- >Gyroid face In Animal Crossing for Gamecube, there are strange, stationary dancing creatures called "gyroids". These are based off of Japanese clay burial figures. If a player leaves to visit another player's town, and they quit or reset the game mid-trip, they will discover that their character's face has been temporarily replaced with that of a "gyroid", and that their inventories will have been emptied. In addition, two villagers, Coco the rabbit and Nindori the ostrich share gyroid faces. Some people say that there was a series of people trying to replicate the "gyroid face trick" in real life, boarding trains, dropping everything they have, and walking home. --- "Have you ever played through Wet Dry World and felt this eerie feeling? That's the emotional aura in effect. Wet Dry World has this unfinished, beta-esque feeling of incompleteness. Like it was a test build that was slapped together into a course at the last second. Truth is, WDW is a simulated human brain. Not in the traditional sense, but similarly to how people have made calculators in Mario Maker, and computers in Minecraft. I don't remember it exactly, but it had to do with the shifting water tides. Another thing that hints into this is the brain diagram found in the stage, which was probably put in there as a reference point for the developers when making this. Super Mario 64 is, at its core, and insidious and evil work of human creation, a twisted experiment made to test the bounds of technology. It's horrifying. Every copy of Super Mario 64 is personalized. Nintendo's experimental AI adapts and subtly creates a slightly altered version of the game tailored specifically for you, appealing to you subconsciously in ways you don't even notice, as well as attempting to mess with you and study how you react to it. Have you ever played someone else's copy of Mario 64? Have you ever felt like something was just a little bit off? That's why. That's how. This is much more than just simple experimentation with procedural generation, however. There are many layers to this, and some of them are more sinister and malicious than others. The secrets of the game are probably hidden within a single, personalized copy of somebody. A copy hidden from the masses by Nintendo to cover-up the truth about their experiment. What if the ROM that Nintendo uses for all the Virtual Consoles and shit are all the least-personalized ROM, that way they can cover your tracks. What if the ROM that is uploaded to all those pirate sites were uploaded by Nintendo, that way people wouldn't be able to replicate the personalization? It's messed [up]. This shit goes DEEP." --- WDW is a reference to the flooded past world. ancient giant buildings, sunken ground levels, sunken windows and entries. no one can make those buildings again. everyone in WDW is dead, only robots and bugs remain. --- Mario 64 carts all have a timer printed into the PCB that slowly counts down from #7FFFFF and when it reaches #000000 (which takes about 19 years) it removes all personalization. Also disassembling the cart will zero the timer and remove the personalization (mechanism is still unknown, but it's speculated that Nintendo built a light sensor into the PCB) --- ===== Mario if he Real, pt3 === Every copy of Super Mario 64 is personalized. Super Mario 64 is, at its core, an insidious and evil work of human creation. --- I think it's secrets and theories getting more secret and intense (and shittier) the further down it goes. Take a look through this. Do not research. --- I see. How does that make every copy 'personalised'? --- None of this is actually real, but apparently Nintendo was able to create a super-early AI that learns what you like from the moment you put the cartridge in for the first time, and adapts the game ever so slightly to suit you, the player. Sometimes this resulted in strange things, like ghost Warios and beta builds being activated. Just saying again, none of this is actually real. --- Oh, OK. I'm way out of the loop, lol --- Yeah it's a fairly new thing. There's a lot of obscure videos about it on YouTube, starting with things like this, you can check it out but there's not really much to see. It says "DO NOT RESEARCH" everywhere but nothing will happen if you do. I'm looking through this stuff with mario sleeping infront of the water level entrance because a ghost of wario appears allegedly, not sure why but I find bullshit like this super interesting. Try googling each individual thing on the image. --- Hello, I'm new to this Reddit stuff so my apologies if I'm slow on things Disclaimer, this was at some friends house way back, and only met those kids once. Both copies of Mario 64 and goldeneye were quite different than the copies I got myself shortly after. I'm looking to see if anyone has ever heard of or seen a custom level from super Mario 64 dating back from approx. 1998-2001. This level, from what I remember, looked like Mario Kart 64's moo moo farm. Simple fence along the level, small beige pathway bringing you to an open field, trees spread around and an unkillable bowser that always one hit you way out back. Goombas were around, and you had access to some power-ups like the flying cap. You accessed it via a dirt pathway in the hills outside of peaches castle, right behind where Mario jumps out the pipe in the beginning. Didn't have any special loading screen, just the one star for that level. This has been bothering me for years, I swear I played and seen this level as a kid, I waited for Mario to go into his sleep animation on this red contraption I always called the tractor, so me and the other kids could go eat hotdogs for lunch. Not only that, a few months after this i got my own copy of Mario 64 and the console, i was sorely upset to find that level wasn't in my game, I spent the better half of two hours trying to crawl up that hill. I have up and shrugged it as a future level. 20 years have gone by and still haven't found it. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers. --- In relation to super mario 64, I have a memory that is a bit weird related to the boo in the basement Personal Story So, I remember back when I 1st played super mario 64, I was 5 or so, with a cousin older than me. He defeated the 1st bowser and gave me the control to explore the new areas while he went for a drink. I went to the 1st door I saw without a star, didn't see the stairs to the bottom so I instead went to the hallway where there's a boo. Now, never in my life I had saw a boo, but I though that, as any enemy, I could just punch it. Now, in the game, when you approach that boo, said boo retreats and escapes to the courtyard, filled with more boos, right?, well, when I approached the ghost, he started chasing me, it took a huge chunk of my health and I decided to run away to the safest place I knew, the main hall of the castle. The boo followed me there, and killed me. I turned off the console in fear. A week later, I got a nintendo 64 emulator from a family's friend so I decided to play super mario 64, I avoided the ghost hallway during my 1st playtrough. Then I started a new save file some years after that, and 1st thing I did was run to the hallway to try and fight back the ghost, nothing. Unless you have a set amount of stars, the boss don't generate in the courtyard, so I went back to play the game and defeat bowser to see them...then this motherfucker appeared from behind me and started chasing me, I tried to fight back but nothing worked. Angry, I restarted the game and ran back to the courtyard, I was going to defeat that boo and...nothing, no chase, no jumpscare, nada. I played the game as normal, unlocked the ghost house and the boo in the hallway acted as normal, running away and never attacking back. I assume this is simply a child memory that is fucked up due to time, but still, whenever I walk trough that hallway and see that ghost, I always expect it to chase me for intruding in the basement ----- Doesn't anybody else think that Wet Dry World from Mario 64 feels kind of weird. Its got a weird negative aura around it. --- Well now that you mention it, that texture in particular is very odd and out of place for a Mario game. Looks like AI generated middle eastern slums --- Yeah, plus there is that abandoned underwater town for some reason. --- Mario 64 has a weird thing on it, feels kind of awkward sometimes, scary, you feel alone in the castle,is so huge, there is no luigi, the tecnical limitations are the reason of this things looking creepy and strange (unintetionally) i guess... Some of the Skybox and all the levels/worlds structures are the reason why Mario 64 looks like a dream, 3d platforms and an image escalated to the whole level/world, that makes you think the levels are infinite, mysterious, even a limbo,a underworld, it's unique. --- I've always felt that Mario 64 has a weird vibe in general and that's why I love it. The, music, secrets, and emptiness of the castle make it a little creepy and it feels like you're in a 3D tech demo, those are reasons I feel why it got so many fake videos and edits back in the day. --- i remember having a dream about finding floating, husk-like figures floating in the flooded city. beside the corpses, i did enjoy getting to explore the inside of the building and all the other usual Dreaming About A Videogame type stuff. i'm pretty sure i got to play as luigi in that dream too, since that was another huge obsession of mine as a kid. still get weird vibes from wet dry world in general, though. if it wasnt for the chuck-ya, i think it'd feel too abandoned for comfort. --- =====
So, after the launch and being hyped about what they were saying pre launch (despite not buying the hype) I was amused but also perturbed by some of the precedents. Call me a grudge bearing dwarf but working hard to make up for fucking up doesn't excuse fucking up. If your intent was demonstrably not malevolent and you try hard I might forgive. But I'm forgiving not forgetting. I'm pretty sure the guy got carried away and said some stupid shit he knew the moment he'd uttered the words he shouldn't have said. He doesn't appear to have decided to stop saying stupid shit when they kept asking him questions he'd rather not answer honestly but I accept that I myself MIGHT have been carried away in the moment. The fact that Hello Games still exist must be in part down to their post launch conduct. It must be. I've seen people speculating on whether Hello Games are even capable of turning a profit since launch. If we write off any hype related sales, exact numbers would be hard to do without a good plot of sales over time, but there'll be something like a bell curve and youd just cut off the most significant chunk of sales and go "this is the operating income over time x since major sales fell to low sustainted numbers. Like MMO's do and why the staff of MMO's always dwindles. Regardless of their specific numbers you can see failed kickstarters, successful kickstarts, kickstarters evolving into something else (mostly yuck), Black holes (Star Citizen), stories of greater success than NMS (Elite Dangerous), Early Access projects that never fill their feature list and go 1.0, man bands with amazing games that just disappear (sometimes leaving a veritable diamond of a half game) and everything in between and a little bit outside. It is hard to imagine they have made money since their significant sales dropped off. We wouldn't know they weren't till they went bust anyway most likely. It could happen tomorrow. It probably wont. I don't think it will. But you never know. Especially with computer games it seems. My little conspiracy theory on their future and profit potential is this - Sony made them rush a release and flooded them with enough cash to make Mr No Mans Sky say stupid shit when everyone pointed cameras at him. And despite bad press and whatever here we are. VR is announced. I feel like todays no mans sky might just be the killer app that VR needs. I wonder if sony haven't continued to bankroll them to some degree, or agreed significant financial incentives down the road if hello games met certain more concrete milestones to their satisfaction. I wonder if Hello Games weren't able and inclined to continue to work on No Mans SKy after the shitshow if a launch and pre-launch because Sony see that no mans sky might still drive sales of their hardware and bonus software in a way that nothing else ever could. That the updates we have received post launch are not the result of sonys backing. If that is so that would mean we should be thanking Sony for what we have today as much as hello games. And if it is I actually hope that Hello Games, Sony and a VR platform might be a breakout success (compared to current numbers). I would like that to happen for all parties. And my rambling is taking a turn. I never thought I'd buy or play no mans sky. I have just bought in. After reading reddit and other written words, watching youtube videos. I allowed myself to think that enough has been added improved and fixed that its worth the asking price. I think that notion is correct. Since im single and was on leave from my job for the last 3 weeks I have spanked most of the last 2 weeks on no mans sky. Its good. Very good. Its not perfect, its not eveyones cup of tea but its good. Very good. I tried a friends PS4 VR for the first time on any VR a few months ago and I was impressed. I still think without a killer app its chasing a niche, is a fad and is mostly likely doomed to be repeated at a later time when it may be more successful. But I have a notion after my recent VR that todays No mans sky plus VR is as close to a killer app as I could imagine for VR. Especially if the "explore many planets/space" is something that appeals to you. So for new players, for people who might buy, for people who might enjoy something like a critique with comparison to other games here goes- No mans sky is a computer game about exploring space, collecting junk, building a base, doing quests, shooting stuff, in order of decreasing weight. It has procedural generation. I really think a lot of people don't fully understand what that means. It is a sandbox but it does have a main story (apparently 30 hours worth. with no side quests or content (hard to imagine) this is arguably the amount of content a triple A game might provide). I haven't finished the main story. Im not in a rush, theres so many other things to do I've just tried to do everything and not rush to any kind of endpoint. Its quests are like the quests found in mount and blade. These are radiant/repeatable/sandbox/dull/repetitive. they are quests that some might claim lack flavour or are boring when you've done them a few times. I have a counter to that but you cant argue that in mount and blade you are going to perform the same "task" for a bunch of different people. For a few people many many times. This is the type of quest your going to do in no mans sky. You'll never do 10 quests for anyone, but every system has 1 space station (mostly), every system is populated by 1 of 3 sentient races aligned races, Gek, Vy'Keen and Korvax. Every station has about 15 people on it. When you do a quest for Gek # 2731, you might as well be doing your 2731st quest for Gek #1. Apart from the fact that hes on a different instance of "space station" separated by a long line on the galaxy map and a very small distance in the 4th special dimension. Now I appreciate mount and blade a great deal. And when I do boring repeat quests for a guy I want to make friends with, I don't see this as a boring quest to perform. I see it as an opportunity to craft the outcome of playing a game I enjoy. If you don't like stabbing people with a sword don't play mount and blade. If you do, don't complain that you have a game-world framework in which you stab people and have the stabbing mean something more than merely stabbing stuff. Youll get a reward. Youll get standing with one of the races. You might be surprised at a variation or a type of quest you haven't seen before (occasionally). People complain about fetch quests. A lot of people play WoW. WoW's got some fetch quests. You just cant ignore that the archetypical "quest" often involves the retrival of some important object, like the holy grail. (this is a fetch quest, go tell the knights they are stupid and pointless and boring I dare you. They'll probably stab you). There are a lot of spaceships. A lot. If you don't want to pay actual money for a lot of different pixel spaceships on a pership price I can definitely recommend no mans sky. You know you can actually play this game right now ? And despite not being everything it originally claimed, it is an actual game that you can play. The spaceships have variants of themselves. And you upgrade them in a customised fashion. You start the game pretty much on foot, on a hostile planet, with a broken spaceship nearby (vaguely, probably). You have to collect resources to survive. You have limited inventory space which you can perform some expensive upgrades on. (Minecraft needs mods for this at my last check in). You can use the resources you collect to build a base and equipment upgrades. This game is Minecraft essentially. With graphics that are a lot better. When I say high resolution I don't just mean textures. Do you really want to explore the random noise on a 256 block height world in 12 biomes that arranged in a mess ? Or do you want to check out weird beasties on an incredible looking actual sphere you can actually circumnavigate. And lower the land/raise the land (more needed here) and otherwise deform the topology of. Without blocks. There are mods. This is always a plus. Im gonna compare No Mans Sky next to Frontier, the prequel to Elite Dangerous (if we ignore First encounters was like the no mans sky next for frontier). There are more spaceships. There are more boring quests, with greater variety. There is space combat that is more fun. You can trade stuff for money. If you collect more money you can buy better spaceships. I actually feel like the potential for actual commodity trading does exist in an interesting fashion. And im someone who played Frontier a lot, I essentially played "space trucker" for money to get a better truck. In a game with boring combat, bugger all variety and short list of stuff to buy. And you know what, Frontier on the Amiga, my computer of choice at the time, was absolutely riddled with bugs. And because ethe internet didn't exist and commodore went bust (lets not pretend if they hadn't all the bugs would have been fixed and new/supplemental floppies would have been shipped to everyone who bought it) those bugs never got fixed. I never read 1 review at the time that criticised frontier for having bugs. It was lauded as an incredible demonstration of what was possible. An incredible simulation. Universally a 90% + game. It was a terrible game, I think I knew it at the time but I played it anyway because it was interesting. It had models of landmarks on planet earth (this was not procedurally generated, im sure I don't need to draw a picture), Id have to look it up specifically but I think golden gate bridge, it had earths major cities, so London probably had the houses of parliament or something. It was a terrible game because it had very few quests. It had bugs. It had little variety and little beyond, "space truck, kill stuff in spaceships, get more money". That's it. You might say it had factions. I say this is borderline irrelevant/meaningless/more of the same. The faction stuff was pretty much more of the above with a singular additional number attached. You couldn't get out of your spaceship. I know frontier is old, but frontier is where elite dangerous came from. Elite Dangerous is in my opinion a masterpiece. It sounds amazing, it looks amazing, by all accounts it flys amazing. It takes forever. Its hard. People can get griefed. Of the disgusting Star Citizen company whatever they are called, Hello Games and Frontier developments (I think that what they are going by right now), 3 people have promised space games. 2 have delivered. of those 2, 1 was more honest to start with, asked for a modest kickstarted amount, got it, delivered and then maintained a mutually satisfactory business model since. Frontier weren't completely honest. But they were the most honest. They spun the least hype, have been most true to themselves, and the product they were making. I don't think Elite dangerous will ever be a breakout success because there aren't enough people who want to spend their 4 hours a day ( a squeeze for most im sure) making 2 trade runs to make a few credit toward the next ship you will never be able to afford anyway. Elite Dangerous is a space truck simulator with more game than frontier ever dreamt of. Heres the thing though, I don't think its got as much game as No Mans Sky. And if you don't like boring repetitive gameplay, well, get ready to spend a lot of time flying from point a to b to make a number go up. And then theres landings. They don't happen automatically in Elite Dangerous as I understand it. Theres a little bit more to afterburning into the correct spatial location and being teleported inside the safe house. (im describing landing on a space station in no mans sky - which is a bit stupid). Star Citizen doesn't exist today and I don't think it ever will. I want it to. But it just isn't going to happen. I don't know how long people are going to wait and still claim that the launch will be soon, probably next year, or how much money people spend on ships for a game that doesn't exist before people decide you know what, lets see what you've actually got. That Leaves No Mans Sky. No Mans Sky is Minecraft in space with just a galaxy worth of graphical improvement and functional fidelity, Its got other planets without adding mods (galaxycraft). It has more resources than in Minecraft and uses them in an interesting way. You craft items and you have to go out of your way to obtain certain resources. Its got spaceships with a very large amount of variety. You can shoot other spaceships. You can build a car (exocraft). You can build a base with your mate (currently dubious about whether steam is needed and the degree to which the GOG version will never have enough players - ive not fiddled with multiplayer yet and im not crazy about what ive read). You can build a freaking race track for cars (this is something my brother always wanted in a game about not racing cars. He used to bang on about star wars pod racing, the shimmering flats in azeroth pre cataclysm made him wish for car racing in wow. he said they could, why not, they should). I couldn't really disagree with him. Its got boring quests that you can do that are less boring and repetitive than a lot of other games of its vague type in a specific arena (theres no game like no mans sky). Its got carrier capital ships (freighters) and small capital ships you can send out on missions (bit like wows armory as I understand it in warlords of draenor) and like some mods do in Minecraft (millenaire, Minecraft comes alive). Its got pretty good looking space, amazing planets and nice travel mechanics (many similarities with elite dangerous on a compressed timescale). Im not sure who did space cards first but im gonna say No mans sky, I'll check after ive posted this. So Elite copied NMS for spcaecars, because presumably people wanted them. I bet Elite Dangerous doesn't have a racetrack construction set. Its got trading. Its added underwatr stuff. I know nothing of this yet. I think asking for more game or complaining about the amount of game or quality of content is a bit like a fat kid crying because you wont give him a cookie. Theres as much point to no mans sky as any other game ever. Theres no point. Apart from entertainment. And what more could you realistically expect ? Does any other game offer you half of what ive listed ? Does any other game do any 3 or 4 game elements better than this ? I put it to you that the answer is no. That this is literally the most value you could ever have from a computer game unless you are so strongly opposed to any game element present that you will irrationally decide that this game is crap. If so don't buy it. You'll be missing out. If the VR thing is a hit, this could change everything. Can you even imagine the sense of immersion being visually deceived into being present on every station, every planet, having every stupid gek on the production line actually stood in front of you waving its arms about and hissing/clicking at you. Just looking at your spaceship. Being able to look below/below side as fly low and perpendicular to the ground. We don't even need to worry about the fact that you cant free the camera from fixed forward. VR will do it by default. Even on a console. Driving a spacecar around and getting out. I hope its good. I hope it helps Sony sell millions of their VR thingy. I hope we get more updates after. Good ones. Charge us, your worth an expansion pack price at this stage. Check Elite Dangerous out. They've done more than one paid I think. So, its not perfect. I'll describe some flaws. The entire universe is populated by only 3 sentient species (leaving trvellers out - ive not completed the main quests, but my initial conversation with a certain special type of traveller suggests they are not a race). One of the 3 previously enslaved and caused great harm to another. These 3 appear to have some kind of vague coalition against the sentinels. I think I know here the main story is going and how the sentinels fit in, but its weak. The distribution of the races amongst the stars is entirely random. Theres no Gek Space. Every 3rd system or so will be gek, every 3rd will be Vy'Keen. Every planet has sentinels (nearly - I think 0 planets have 0 sentinels). The sentinels are described variously as the scourge of life, the uncaring preservers of order, the indiscriminate machine overlord. You will never find an NPC fighting a sentinel (on a planet surface - I think - im pretty sure). You will never fight an NPC (ignoring animals). System ownership will never change. Theres no real depiction of naything representing any kind of ability or infrastructure for these 3 sentient lifeforms to build space station, battlestars or food. Civilization is highly abstracted. Youll never find a city. Or a big factory, or any dense concentration of sentient life and its footprint. In that case sentient life must be teetering on the brink. Its hinted at by NPCs but you see 0 evidence of it in game. Everything is static. No NPC to NPC interaction, abstracted or otherwise. No large scale settlements or economic activity. Its planets are amazing. They are varied. They force you to travel to other planets. But they don't spin. There doesn't appear to be much/any orbital mechanics or motion. Theres no (very little anyway if any as ive observed) variation of a biome within a planet. I'll give em a pass here, but give us cold poles and a hot equator where the actual effect of temperature varies. We seem to have "perfect hazard conditions - no hazard, hazard of one of 4 types, hot cold, poison, radiation, extreme versions of those and that's it. Theres no, this temperate planet is prefect, but at the poles I take some cold damage and at the equator you take some heat damage. Do this. Scale it to the base environment for whatever planet has been generated. Give us spotty radiation patches and poisonous fog that hugs the low ground like a gaseous sea in places. Give some resource variation (slight) according to local variations one environment (including fauna) Give us cold planet stuff at the poles and hot planet stuff at the equator. Fill in the gaps this wold create in content line. Give us spin. Maybe space things out in system just a touch more. Theres not enough moons. I like moons. There are very few. Give us procedurally generated animals. Like spawn does. But better. Do your version. Its hard to be more definitive here since ive only just got nto the game now and haven't played it and seen it change, but what I have seen is a given animal appearing on many cold worlds in many different systems. You'll scan it on one planet, hop a few systems way, forget about the animal, then land on a cold planet do a scan and go "oh I know this creature already). Use a system like spawn, give them palette swaps to match their environment (evolved camoflague/environment blending) and minor but significant cosmetic changes. Give us predators with go faster red stripes (this occurs in nature - watch out), give us dark coloured night time hunting animals that stay in patches of thick undergrowth. (this would be fucking terrifying in VR - your heart would race) Give us 20 different AI packages, do the spawn thing, but your spin on it, mash it all up. Some of it would be stupid, some of it would be memorable. Less of it will feel familiar. You wont get variety like that. You just wont find anything as good anywhere else. Give us actual space battles. It took me a little while, the setup for freighter rescues looked good and sounds good, but after a while I was like, "these turbolasers that thing is firing make a lot of noise and flashing lights but my little blasters don't half do a lot of work. Also The freighters appear invulnerable. Im pretty sure now, having just stopped and observed for a while, having dashed into my freighter as I was attacked and spent ages inside building with the loudest sound of laser fire for what must have been a couple of hours (I turned my volume down). Nothing was progressing. In wing commander the tigers claw could actually be blown up. Our freighters should too. Come to think of it wing commander was a very simplistic game that I absolutely loved and it would be so easy to make your space combat more like wing commander. Except your engine and tech is so much better, so if you tried and half succeeded that would add immeasurably. Give us frigates we can actual pilot, with a crew of friends or npcs. Give us actual fleets, like in the X games, not cardboard cutouts of soldiers manning the fort walls. You've done all the hard stuff. Give us spacecraft in between frigates and starships and apply youre measure of variety. Do the same thing with freighters. Give us little ones with less hangers and maybe slightly larger than current. We'll probably need some actual factions. Can we please have some more meaningful ground combat. Give us some other opponents than the sentinels. Give us some destiny style raids if you cant do better. Give us some more stuff to shoot at. Give us a better framework for shooting stuff and maybe some meaningful changes to the world based on our actions. Raid an outpost and clear it of hostiles - have it fall to ruin or occupied by the planetary governemt or the player. Give us some more enemies to fight and some bosses and we can talk about adding "loot" More like diablo (we can throw some procgen in there). I like what Mr Murray said about multitools. I like the upgrade system which is similar for starships exosuit, multiool and space car. I don't lke the fact that a rifle (whose look I might prefer) will pretty much always be worse than a comparable alien class tool (I don't really care for the teeth and claws on my space shotgun/mining laser). Landing in spacestations is stupid. Christ you could probably pulse drive into it if the game didn't force you out due to large object proximity. You can approach the magic corridor of teleportation at crazy angles and speeds, with a tiny bit of practice youll end up max thrusting at a certain point of light emanating from the station and being magically and safely jerked into the correct position and speed for an automatic landing. At least make as ask for permission on the space station we want to land at so we don't crash into other traffic (which I think the magic teleportation tunnel makes you permeable to other matter - youll never crash in here) unlike the trees and buildings placed in front of landing pads that I occasionally cant seem to avoid crashing into. The freighters AOE/proc range is even more silly than a space station. The amount of times ive accidentally landed again on my freighter after taking off studying the galaxy map and then forgetting I need to boost away from my freighter before I accidentally point myself at the magical teleporting light that sucks me back in against my wishes (whilst completely stationary relative to...… my freighter ?) I don't like the teleporter system. Many things I don't like, the sentient race dispersal and lack of faction or meaningful world/galaxy changes fit the game and scope. I don't hate no mans sky for not being more than it is despite being better than anything else. It excites me what Hello Games might do. I wonder how many updates before they charge us or how long it will continue. I think some of the things I want might actually happen. But the teleporters, many people complain about the cost of starship fuel, for launching after planetary landings warp cells are not cheap or logistically friendly. What I realised after quite a lot of play was, I don't need to use warp fuel in my starship to do trading runs. When I use the teleport network (on stations or built at your bases) you can teleport to any station you've visited. And when you teleport on foot using other peoples network, your starship comes with you. So to trade between two systems close by for low profit, get a big empty ship, never leave a station, use 0 warp fuel, and this is trading as no mans sky would us do it. Using system they provide to intelligently work around the roadblocks in an efficient fashion. They've kind of undermined space trucking right there. That makes me sad, because I feel like I should be hyperdriving/warping around to make a profit. The more ive played no mans sky, Ive realised (belatedly, but with plenty of time left to appreciate but annoyingly to me not soon enough, that the teleport gates fir the game. How else could you travel to the centre of the galaxy and ever return to a base we built along the way with starship fuel being expensive. How we might ever return to an NPC we took a quest for and completed without realising leaving the quest giver (and rewarder) far away. The teleporters. They fit the game we have. I don't like them. They undermine space trucking. They are gamey. I feel like if you didn't want to use them, the answer is go to the centre of the galaxy, then build a base, or build one as you approcash and return to it, this wold give nice clustering near the centre in any realised actual MMO style version of the game. Or have players commit to going to the centre and then significantly leaving. It would be a lot of work to refactor for the elimination of teleporters. I don't believe it will ever happen. I don't like teleporters. If you wanted to play space trucker and couldn't afford (time) Elite Dangerous, the teleporters are like a cheaters backdoor. They fit the game we have, I'm only just starting to realise. Warping and using hyperdrive fuel then become about exploration, about ushing the envelope into the unknown. You can teleport from home, all the way out to your personal frontier, then do 1 small jump into the unknown and then teleport all the way home, spending 1 warp fuel on a very long journey and back. It fits the game but not my sense of what the game should be. I don't think our starships should travel with us. When I teleport to my base under a trading post my scpaceship cant always launch or launches and gets stuck in a damage spiral against the buildings that I cant escape. Its stupid that youd use the hyperdrive when you can walk into a teleporter and take your massive (far bigger than the portal you walk through) starship with you. If you did that, hyperdrive fuel would need to be cheaper potentially and the potential profit for doing long trade runs might need adjusting. Well that is an insane wall of text. I could keep going. Ive got stories about rock dodging ankle biting little beetles on frozen planets that killed me wiping out my inventory (Super rage inducing) in survival before I realised the cost. Before I installed any exosuit upgrades and I was often terrified stepping out of my starship upon dirtfall for the first time. I got instagibbed by an animal on a hot planet I swear the second I stepped out mullered me. Losing my inventory again, ragequitting for about an hour again, and THEN learning that actually shield modules for an exo suit actually increase health and so can be said to increase general toughness. After the personal shield spiel from a quest (base building maybe) I ignored all mentions of shields even though I was kind of aware of the synergy bonuses for upgrades. How the tight inventory space makes me want to waste 0 on upgrades. My current plathrough I found a nice planet but with hostile sentinels and I was like, you know what, im staying. But if I took an accidental but of damage from an animal, a hostile plant or overzealous use of the jetpack results in some fall damage that seems way harsher than it hsold on the healthbar (it happens a lot) and then, for as long as it take to start naturally healing, you will be one shotted by the next thing that hits you. Till you realise you really do need those shield modules for your exo suit that increase health. About one time landing at a minor settlement and seeing a building clip through my ship just before I landed to then find myself stuck in the roof of the bulding and have no choice butto reload a save from way too long ago Or die again carrying a lot of junk I was really angry about losing to a bug. This is the singular and worst real bug I have experienced. But it hurt me. Fortuneately ive not seen anything else like that. About finding a 37 slot fighter crashed ship off a distress signal (ive never seen one so big in the wild) and already having most of the materials hoarded to just deck it out (30,000,000 credits by the way ship value and its only a B class). About digging millions of credits out of the game and realising I could buy the elements I need enmasee. metaing the Minecraft part of the game and saving myself loads of time not mining resources (no one seems to sell carbon though....). About realising that if starship hopping to points of interest isn't efficient/viable then building those dam space cars has to be a project soon, but I need to find the right planet to lay down my virginal base and using the car to explore the whole dam planet and plunder that bad boy. About feeling like ive nearly cleared an entire moon of reources after manuall placing a base, and then flying half way round a planet and placing a second bade and then using those 2 reference points to explore on foot, pillaging salvaged tech, resources, everything. Thatll do, I could say more. You should buy it. Its the best game you could buy (witcher 3 aside). Its got soooo much content if you played a fraction its worth the asking price. Its silly in places, almost childlike in its world building but that's me projecting. It very much fits itself, I believe I understand its changed significantly over the course of its life so far, itll probably change some more. It could get even better. It probably will. I don't care I'll never see the E3 shots from day -1. I just need you to con me better into thinking such a thing might be possible without a hand. I really think VR will smash it. Give us some more flavour on everything, use procgen for more. Maybe be a little bit more simulation and a little less arcade consoled elite for people who don't have years to play (just a little more simulation - maybe). Please give us factions (add 3 races, make it good vs evil) and a few minor powers to start with. Give us some conflict and more meaningful groundcombat and vehicular combat. Give us that and you just might be able to have all thepeoples annual budget for video game entertainment. Maybe If you do it well. No mans sky you are wonderous and childlike. I want to beat you and love you at the same time. Forgive the spelling I really cant be bothered, this is long and youll get what im saying from context im pretty sure.
With console launch being so close, here is a bit of a guide, and what to expect with 7 Days to Die.
I hope you're all hyped for the console launch tonight! I figured I'd take this time to write up a semi-lengthy guide on what to expect when playing this game, for all the new players about to join our amazing community! Please feel free to add anything, ask questions, or comment. Consider this a guide and open Q&A from an avid 7 Days to Die player. I've been playing since Alpha 3, and this game has come quite a ways! It's great to see it expand to the console playerbase, and open up a whole new area of fans! I just created a new guide for selecting the optimal server settings to fit your game style. So if you'd like to, give that a read as well. Its a full break down of each server setting, and what it does. New guide up: Surviving the first 7 Days and preparing for the horde! Another new guide: Minibikes and Mines
What is 7 Days to Die?
7 Days to Die is possibly one of the most creative games inside the zombie genre. The company The Fun Pimps seems to have hit an area inside the survival genre where most others have failed, in a sense. Allow me to use the popular title DayZ and H1Z1 as examples for this. Now we have all seen our fair share of zombie movies I hope! Ranging from movies like 28 Days Later, to George Romeros famous series of movies (Day of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, etc), to the famous TV series The Walking Dead. The one thing all these movies highlight, is how ruthless zombies are. How they will stop at nothing to get what they are after. Clawing and smashing through houses, piling up against doors and breaking through! And every game seems to want to mimic that feeling. That fear of death. That fight of flight human instinct. And a lot of them have done a pretty great job, but they all lack one aspect that 7 Days to Die tends to hit perfectly. That aspect is, the ability to smash through the world to get at you. In games such as DayZ and H1Z1, that fear tends to stop the second you close a door on a pre-fabricated building. They don't really tend to smash through to come and get you. Well, 7 Days to Die has that perfected. These zombies are not something to take lightly! With the entire world, including the ground, being destructible, no where is safe for you to hide. If they sense you, only fighting or running will save you.
So what does this game offer, besides insanely well done AI?
7 Days to Die seems to be completely focused on "play it your way". The way the game mechanics allow you to control your world, is something similar to the game Minecraft. With the entire world being destructible, you can do just about anything. Now some people LOVE to build, I for one sure do! This game allows you to be as creative as you'd like to be, with some players creating buildings such as Marios castles, the World Trade Center, pyramids, towns, and pretty much anything you'd like to! Now what if you're not much of a builder? What if you're just not feeling that Minecraft-esque creative aspect? Well there are TONS of amazing buildings out in the world to choose from! From stores, cafes, oil plants, parking structures, gas stations, diners, and even run down shacks!. There are dozens of towns full of houses and apartment buildings. Major cities with tons of stores, movie theaters, massive apartment complexes, police stations. You name it, you can live in it! Every single building can be fortified, remodeled, and changed to your liking. Nothing is off limits in this game. If you find a nice place to call home, you can reinforce the entire thing to steel and concrete, lay spikes around the outside and hold up inside. This game is entirely "play your way". Heck, you can even go from town to town, going nomad style and live off the land and what you find. The choice is yours! (Although, I'm a loot horder, so I could never play this way. So much loot, so much to stash away!)
So you talk a lot about the building and zombies, what will I have to defend myself with?
Guns, melee weapons, tools, traps, landmines, you name it! The big focus would be the guns and traps. But let me first cover melee weapons, as you're most likely going to use those when you first start out. Melee weapons are pretty important for your average zombie dealings. Most of the time, you'll choose melee to clear out a town or building. One of the best, and rarest being the machete. This bad boy does a considerable amount of damage, and tends to decapitate zombies fairly easy. Its pretty hard to find, but when you do, it will become a go-to weapon. The sledgehammer tends to do about the same amount of damage/decapitation as the machete, but it swings a lot slower, and may be difficult for some users in tight situations. Its great for outdoors though! The most commonly used, easy to craft melee weapon, would have to be the spiked club. This tends to do a decent amount of damage, nice and quickly. Its relatively easy to craft, and easy to find. Highly suggested for the first few days of gameplay. Traps and landmines. These badboys are what you'll be using to fortify your parameters around your home. In early game, wood spikes are going to be your BEST choice for keeping those pesky roaming zombies at bay. They are easy to craft, easy to deploy, but they break fairly easily. So long term use isn't suggested once you get established in the game. For a good solid defense, wood log spikes are the way to go! These are nice and sturdy, and upgradable. Your first tier being treebark looking, then to a more solid wooden spike, then metal tipped, metal sheeted, and finally fully reinforced metal. (So 2 tiers of wood, 3 tiers of metal). Lastly, we have our barbed wire fence. These are pretty decent to use, as they slow zombies down, but they also tend to break quite a bit. Typically you'd want to place these somewhere around your entrance, and not around your entire base as you would wood log spikes. They tend to be rather expensive, and hard to maintain. Onto the guns! Oh guns guns and more guns! Now unlike everything else (besides the machete), these are NOT craftable. You will find various weapon parts (sometimes even full guns) as you explore the world. Most typically, inside a gun safe commonly found in most houses. These can be pretty sturdy and hard to break into early game. Now as you explore the world, you'll notice you'll find various books to make these guns, such as the ak47, sniper rifle and all the others. In order to put these gun parts together, you need to first find the book to unlock the knowledge. But once you do, you can assemble and disassemble any weapon you find, mixing and matching different grades (we'll touch up on this in a moment). So for a list of guns, we have the crossbow and bow, pistol, blunderbuss (this gun is a default one, so you can make it as soon as you find the supplies.) the shotgun and sawed off shotgun, SMG, hunting rifle, sniper rifle, 44 Magnum, AK47, and lastly, the rocket launcher.
What about the tools? What do we have to harvest and destroy all these buildings with?
This is probably one of the most important aspects to this game. The tools. And with this, I'll cover quality grades as well. So lets start with that before I go into tools, because it'll make more sense. Quality grades are pretty simple. The lowest grade possible, would be 1, highest being 600. This is also done on a color scheme every 100 levels. So 1-99=Grey. 100-199=Orange. 200-299=Yellow. 300-399=Green. 400-499=Blue. 500-600=Purple. Now quality will effect a lot of things in the game. From armor and weapons, to tools you use, to even the minibike! Its obvious to state, that the better quality the item, the better it is. Higher quality guns will do more damage, higher quality armor will protect you more, and higher quality tools will harvest faster and do more damage to the world around you. You'll have a tough time getting through a gunsafe with a level 1 quality tool, but easily break through with a quality 600. So for tools, The Fun Pimps have added something AMAZING I feel. Power tools! You have your standard run of the mill tools that you'll use the majority of your game time, so lets cover those first. When first starting out, you'll be crafting a stone axe, this won't really do that much damage/gather much when you are first starting. But the more you make, the higher your quality skill will get at making them. For higher axe tiers, we have the fireaxe and the steel fireaxe (sorry no link D: ) As you would suspect, this axe does more damage to wood based objects, then it would to metal or stone. For those types, we have items such as the iron pickaxe and steel pickaxe. Now the steel tier is a bit harder to craft when you first start out. You might get lucky and loot one, but thats up to the RNG gods. These tools are going to be your everyday gathering, and exploring tools. They'll help you enter buildings quickly, get through gun safes and metal doors faster, and gather materials efficiently to build up your home. You'll be going through them left and right, and they are very vital to the game. Now let me cover your homestead tools. These tools are going to be your common tools you use around your base. They do various things, from upgrading and repairs, to tilling the ground for a farm, to shoveling out uneven terrain to build on. First up, we have our shovels. These are self explanatory. Used for quickly removing and gathering dirt, snow, sand, clay, basically anything soft. They also come in a stone shovel form, for early game clay gathering (you'll need a bit of this to make your first forge, and metal.) Next up, we have our garden hoes. When you use these on dirt, they will till the ground, allowing you to grow various crops on the land for food. They are more of a luxury item for established players, then a necessity like the other tools. And lastly, we have our repair tools. Now repair tools all repair at different rates. Our first and lowest, being the trusty stone axe that we'll be starting out with. This repairs/upgrades at a rate of 25% per swing. Next up, is our wrench. These will upgrade at a rate of 50% per swing. Note that this tool, can also be used to disassemble various things in the world, from refrigerators, to overs, to even the cars outside! So this is a pretty good tool to have on you when exploring for materials. Lastly, we have our claw hammer. This is the most powerful handheld repaiupgrade tool, upgrading at 100% per swing. Now onto the fun part. The power tools! No one likes swinging a pick for hours down in the mines, now do they? Well this is going to highly appeal to you! First up, we have the auger! This badboy will chew through stone like its butter. This is an AMAZING tool for gathering, remodeling, trench digging, and making nifty bunkers. When you finally find one of these, you'll have A LOT of fun with the game. And just like our tools, the higher quality parts, the better it'll be. This takes gas to operate, so make sure you loot plenty of gas stations to keep this running! Next, we have the favorite, and no zombie game could be complete without one, the CHAINSAW!!!!!! Just like the auger, this amazing tool uses gas to operate. It will quickly do away with trees for fast gather, and just about any zombie in your path! It is really fun to use on zombies, but beware, it is a melee tool, so this means exposing yourself to damage! Lastly, we have the best upgrade/repair tool in the game, the nailgun. And yes, you can literally shoot nails at zombies if you'd like to. But this hand home repair device upgrades at an extremely quick pace. VERY quickly actually. Its great for big builds and fast upgrading. Now do beware. When you use power tools, they are LOUD. They will attract screamer zombies to your location that'll come and check out what all the hubbub is about. So using them around your base is best left for daylight. They also tend to be pretty loud sound wise, so I suggest turning your volume down a bit before using it. Hopefully TFP will make it a bit softer for us in the future.
This all sounds great! But what about character progression?
Character progression in this game is really well done. We use an experience system to level, and with each level, we receive skill points to invest into better aspects of our character. Experience: With everything you do, you'll earn experience towards a skill. So lets say I'm mining away, I'll earn skill experience towards Mining Tools. For repairs/upgrade, I'll earn exp in Construction Tools. For smashing zombies with my club, I'll get exp towards Blunt Weapons. Etc etc. Now after my skills get high enough, I'll level. Each level will grant me 5 total skill points to invest into my character. I can choose to progress those skills listed above even higher, OR I can choose to invest it into a Perk. Perks are bonuses to certain things. Lets take the best one for early game, called Quality Joe. Quality Joe will cost me 5 skill points to upgrade once. With each upgrade, I have a better chance to find higher quality items. It'll give me a +25/50/100 quality upgrade automatically. Quicker Crafting perk, will allow me to craft items faster (10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%). Skills like Concrete Mixing, Steel Smithing, and Workbench, will unlock the ability for me to craft Concrete, Steel, and Workbenches. So be wise about where you invest your points when you level. Sometimes its best to let the natural skills progress on their own, and invest into the perks as you level up. Pick and choose wisely. Go over your options before you commit, because there is no turning back!
What will happen when I die?
There are 3 death settings you can choose from when creating your game. These settings are under the "Drop on Death" settings tab. First, is Toolbelt Only. When you die this will only drop what is inside your toolbelt, mostly it'll affect your weapons, tools, and maybe food/meds. Next setting is "Backpack Only". It'll drop your entire backpack, but you'll keep your toolbelt. Then there is "Everything". Meaning both your toolbelt and backpack. When you die, you will respawn either randomly in the world, or if you have a sleeping bag/bed placed, you can spawn there. When you die, you'll see a teal backpack logo appear on the map, so you have the possibility to get your items back. Nothing is lost forever, but others can loot it if you're not quick enough/playing on a public server (other players won't see your backpack logo on the map though, so thats nice). When you die, you will lose 10 Wellness. Wellness effects your total hitpoints and stamina. So when you die you'll go down to 90 on both, then 80/70/60 etc. The lowest possible is 30 wellness right now. To regain wellness, you need to eat properly ingame. The better food you cook, the faster your wellness will go up. There are also perks to boost it slightly, but food will be your main source of wellness gain. Your wellness can go very high. I've personally seen people at 230+ wellness, so the better you live, the more hp/stamina you have. If you eat nothing but canned food, you won't gain any. But if you grow crops, hunt for meat, and make various soups, pies, and other high end food, you'll gain wellness faster. Here is a list of all the food ingame, with a breakdown of the stats they give.
How do I grow crops to gain better food?
This comes back to our homestead tools discussion. Firstly, you will need a garden hoe. This will allow you to till dirt to make the ground fertile to plant in. This ONLY works on dirt. Not sand, clay, snow, etc. Next we will need seeds. Now you may have found a potato, or some coffee, or maybe a husk of corn while out adventuring. You can turn those into seeds within the crafting menu. Once you have the seeds, equip it in your hotbar, and go up to the tilled ground and click (for console, press the action button) and you'll see a tiny plant appear in the ground. After X amount of time, your harvest will be ready! For corn, there are two stages, so its best to wait a little bit till its nice and tall before harvesting. For seeds and plantable crops, we have coffee, corn, potatoes, and blueberries. You can also plant goldenrod and chrysanthemum to make teas with. And cotton for cloth. Lets not forget tree seeds to regrow a forest for localized wood gathering. Such at maple and pine.
How do I cook the food I harvest?
This one is nice, short and simple. Campfires! If you open up your campfire, you'll notice various recipes on the left hand side. Just follow the required ingredient and make sure you have the proper fuel source, and the required cooking utensil, and you're all set.
How do I make metal for tools, melee weapons, and building upgrades?
This is probably the most difficult aspect of starting out. Making your very first forge. This is not so much of an easy task. Now some buildings, mostly off-the-grid buildings located down dirt roads, will have a premade forge inside of it which can help GREATLY! But they can be a bit hard to find. So here is your best possible strategy for making a forge within the first few days. Gathering the clay and stone will be the easy part. Clay can be found in large patches in almost every biome. Look for a brownish/tan color texture around dirt, and dig it up But the challenge will be the hide, and pipe you will need. For a hide, I highly suggest roaming around until you find a pig. You'll often see a lot of these before you make it to your first town or city, so keep an eye out early in the game. Stags, or deer can be a bit hard to chase down on your first few days, especially with a weak bow. So pigs are your best bet. Once you kill your first pig, you'll end up using your stone axe on it. Near the final hit, you'll receive a large bone. With this, you want to craft a bone shiv, which will help you collect a bit more resources from animals. Next, is the short iron pipe. You will need 2 of these. They can be quite hard to find early game, but your best chance at finding one, will be inside of a kitchen. Stoves, cabinets, and refrigerators tend to be the highest chance drop rate on these. You can also find them pretty often in trash piles scattered around the world. Once you find all these, are create your first forge, you will need both scrap iron and clay. Put both the iron, and clay inside the "input" menu when you open the forge. Place a fuel source, such as wood or coal, inside the fuel slot. Just like this. You need to give the materials a little bit of time to smelt down before they're available to be crafted with. After you've smelted some down, you'll notice the options to craft certain items within the left hand side menu. The first thing you want to make, is probably an anvil. From there you can craft various other things. To gain back the resources you placed into the forge, just craft the original resource (scrap iron to get scrap iron back). BEWARE. Forges produce something called a "Heat Map". The more you cook, the more zombies will notice someone is around that area. If you have a cook room, you'll notice screamer zombies will flock to it like stay cats to a meal. This acts just like the power tools we went over above. So careful with burning a lot of materials 24/7. It's best to cook a lot once you have a decent defense set up, that way your traps can take care of the screamers so they don't alert a horde to your newly built base.
What about building and upgrading? How does that work?
So as of right now, any building block can be upgraded to the highest tier. That wood house, can eventually be made into full steel if you'd like. But this normally runs a pretty high material cost overall. As burning through all the tiers of upgrades, will cost a lot. So allow me to break down the tiers a bit for you so you fully understand.
Outline Blocks Wooden Frame: This is your basic outline building block. You're able to place these down, and pick them right back up as you need. So planning your outline is best done with these blocks.
Tier 1 Wooden Block. This is your first upgrade done to a block. Most wooden pre-made homes start at this tier, even though the texture might be different. To upgrade from a frame, to their tier, will cost 10 wood.
Tier 2 Reinforced Wood: This is your next tier up. A bit sturdier then tier 1. This also costs 10 wood to upgrade from Tier 1.
Tier 3 Iron Reinforced Wood: This is your first stage of metal tier. Its basically just reinforced wood with iron. This will cost you 10 scrap iron to upgrade from tier 2.
Tier 4 Scrap Iron Block: This is a full iron block, pretty beefy mid tier block. This also costs 10 scrap iron.
Tier 5 Iron Block: This is your final stage of iron blocks. This will be the last tier you can obtain until you unlock the Concrete Perk. Its cost is also 10 scrap metal.
Tier 6 Concrete Block: This is your first stage of concrete block. You can only upgrade to this stage after you've unlocked the perk inside the skill menu. In order to do so, you will need atleast 30 levels in Construction Tools. This will cost you 10 Concrete Mix. (This link shows a book to unlock it, that is false. Its now a skill perk)
Tier 7.1 Reinforced Concrete: Wet. This next tier has 2 stages to it, Wet and Dry. When it is wet, it will have lower health then normal, making it very vulnerable to damage. Its best to guard the area while it dries, typically takes around 20 minutes or less. This tier also costs 10 Concrete Mix.
Tier 7.2 Reinforced Concrete: Dry. Once your Reinforced Concrete dries, it will create this block. It has a lot of health, and very sturdy. This is what most people build with. Its very good for defense. This tier costs nothing, seeing as its just the final stage to the concrete tier. The only requirement is letting 7.1 tier dry out to forum this.
Tier 8 Steel Block. This is our final stage of building block. This beefy block can take A LOT of damage. In order to upgrade to this, you will first need to unlock the perk after obtaining Construction Tools 50. This tier will cost 10 Steel.
So as you can see, it can be pretty costly to upgrade directly from a wooden frame, to the highest tier. Running a total of 30 Wood, 40 Scrap Iron, 20 Concrete, and 10 Steel. But for bigger projects, like the one you are attempting to do, there is a work around to save some materials. The Rebar Frame. This is created inside your forge, and works just like the Wooden Frame. You can place it down as an outline block, and pick it back up at any time. But by using this block, you skip the wooden and metal tier stages. When you upgrade this frame, you will first use 10 wood to encase the outside, then upgrade directly to Reinforced Concrete: Wet. After it dries, you can then upgrade it to Steel Block tier. So the overall cost is greatly reduced. You save 20 Wood, 40 Scrap Iron, and 10 Concrete. All thats required is one stage of Concrete (10 total Concrete Mix), and Steel (10 total Steel). This is your best bet for making a wall around your base. But it does require a little bit of time to craft the materials, and gather it all up. So its not an easy thing to do within your first few days of gameplay. Gathering for this can cost you quite a bit of time, but the payoff is great when creating a wall. I think that about sums up a lot of the basics about this game. I covered what the game is about, the mechanics and concept behind the game, guns, tools, building and houses, xp and progression... I'll go ahead and write up a guide in a little bit for those just starting out. A play by play of your first few days, and what to do/avoid. I wanted to basically upsell the game a bit and fully explain some of the aspects to anyone who may still be considering purchasing this game, or those going in kinda blind. I'd like to thank some youtubers that I linked for the great videos they've posted here on reddit in the past. All these guys are great loyal players, and if you'd like to see them in action, please head over to their channels. Thankyou Survival Buddies for the amazing Mario castles! Corion82 for your amazing WTC build. And Z-Nation FFS for your amazing build that I've personally been addicted to watching the past few days. Seriously that place is insane! And also Indie for getting overrun and slaughtered by zombies in the power plant ;) Thankyou for taking the time to read my breakdown. If you have any questions, comments, or wish to talk more, please don't hesitate to chime in in the comments below!
Some advice to newfriends (you new players of Civcraft), probably the stupidest thing you can do to start Civcraft is murder people. Even after paying the debts of a few people, things stay hard (and posting evidence of another's crimes is a must). I really don't recommend getting on an alt and shouting about sexual intercourse while asking to kill Libra. Too many NSFW moments from KaiCraft in that one against Libra. But at least things have popped up in CivTest quickly. Let's get to what happened.
Chancer endures a raid, gets support. Foofed's return is rumored in thread, too. Maybe he's ascend to Chancer's highest leadership and dissolve the nation.
Reports indicate there were underlying tensions, but the trigger was Fritz trolling by attacking in Bet while screaming he was a fascist from Gimmel. This got him pearled by BrunoTheMiner and got the NSR and Aquila over the edge. Both areas remain at risk of griefing and murder.
This is a little project I've been meaning to do, and now seems like a good time to post it given the number of recent posts asking newbie questions. I know we have a number of helpful Wiki pages and an FAQ, but it's somewhat limited, so hopefully people who are new to World of Nintendo will find this useful. Updated 2/18/16 to reflect new information & a kid/parent section What is World of Nintendo? World of Nintendo is a line of toys from Jakks Pacific. The line includes:
Mario Kart coin racers Mario Kart launcher figures Micro figures (less than 1" with playsets) 2.5" limited articulation figures 4" articulated figures 6" articulated figures 10" articulated figure (EU only) 20" articulated figures Plushies, including both Jakks Pacific World of Nintendo branded plushies and the higher quality San-ei plushies using the World of Nintendo logo Mario Kart racetracks Mario Kart RC vehicles, including wall climbers A life-size Mario Kart ride-on go kart for kids Costume items under Jakks' Disguise brand (currently a Master Sword and Hylian Shield)
So are these like amiibo? Not really. The amiibo figures are Nintendo's near field communication (NFC) figurines. They are made "by Nintendo"--technically outsourced--whereas World of Nintendo are made by Jakks Pacific, a toy manufacturer, via a license agreement. The differences between these and amiibo are that amiibo cover a much broader base (literally every Nintendo franchise has the potential to have associated amiibo, and most do courtesy of Smash Bros.) and amiibo tend to be higher quality despite their size. World of Nintendo, by contrast, are cheaper and look a little cheaper, but they're articulated in most cases, so they're able to be posed or, for kids, played with. Which series in the Nintendo brand are licensed? From what we know so far, Jakks has licenses for:
Super Mario Bros. Legend of Zelda Donkey Kong Metroid Animal Crossing Pikmin Star Fox F-Zero Splatoon!
When asked, Jakks reps would not say which series they had licensed, so we can only go by what's been released so far. We know that they don't have access to the Super Smash Bros. series, but series like Kid Icarus, and Fire Emblem are still question marks at this point. What Figures are Available? Here at the World of Nintendo subreddit, we have a Complete Product List that's pretty up to date. A member here was also working on a Google Document spreadsheet that has additional information. When is _______ coming out? The question we'd all love to be able to answer. World of Nintendo has soft release dates, so there's no set date certain that a figure will be available. We usually know approximate timeframes, typically within about a month or so, but even then, it tends to take items that are "out" another month to two months to actually reach store shelves and online spaces. Our Release Dates List provides some insight. Retailer websites where preorders are offered such as Big Bad Toy Store and ToyWiz are also good sources of information. During toy conventions, Jakks has recently displayed and announced future items, so we get a general idea of what's coming out. Unfortunately, that's about the best we can do. During toy conventions, Jakks will periodically display new items. However, you may see some images on our Wiki page here that are just game art as opposed to pics or mockups of figures. Those came from a PowerPoint presentation Jakks gave a while ago. Information on specifics and details can be sparse. While it can be a bit frustrating, if you check back here, you can find some good information and generally be kept up to date. Are these collector's items? Sort of. The World of Nintendo subreddit is a collector's haven by necessity, but true collector's quality figures are sparse here. If you want something collectible, Good Smile's Nendoroid line has you covered with super high quality figures. There's also a really good Skyward Sword Link, Samus, and Zero Suit Samus available under the Figma brand, but it's significantly more expensive than the MSRP for the Skyward Sword 4" Link and Samus in this brand. You get quality for the price in the Figma figures. That does not make these figures less collectible, however; to the contrary, collecting the whole line is a challenge but it rewards you with a large set of Nintendo figurines and plushies. Anything can be a collector's item, and given the relatively limited availability of Nintendo toys compared to other brands out there, these became collectible. I'm a kid. How do I get these figures?! My informal, 100% unofficial estimate is that about 85-90% of this subreddit consists of adults (18+) with some degree of disposable income. However, I fully recognize that we have a handful of kids and teens here, ages roughly 10-17. If you fall into that younger category, feel free to share this whole guide with your parents, this part especially! The irony of World of Nintendo is that it's a toy line for kids that gets scooped up by adult collectors. Think Star Wars, but with arguably more voracious collectors because we, the adult collectors here, grew up wanting these figures without them actually existing, whereas the Star Wars people at least had figures they could buy. So if you're a kid, what do you do to get these? I have a few tips. First, save your own money. Cut lawns, do stuff around the house, however you can accumulate your own money, do so. Gifts are one thing, but as you get a little older, you have to start saving on your own. Second, look below for a list of stores. As a kid, you can be aware of what's coming out, but you have to make it a point to search at stores in a lot of cases. Third, let's talk about online retail. When I was young, my parents didn't like to order things with a credit card over the phone. When the Internet came into existence, they wouldn't go near it with their credit cards. I didn't start ordering things online with a credit card until late in my college years. If you're looking to get figures as a kid, honestly, your best option is online because brick and mortar retailers (stores) will almost always have a limited stock and you can't ask parents to go to Toys R Us two times a week to check on new inventory. For those parents out there, here are my suggestions. Arguably the safest website from which to order is Amazon. Look for items shipped and sold by Amazon. That means you're dealing directly with Amazon itself, not third party sellers who may or may not be reliable. Toys R Us is another good option because it offers free shipping for any order over $20 and it accepts PayPal. For online purchases in general, PayPal is pretty safe. There's no 100% safe option, but that's about as safe as it gets. As a general rule, as long as you're ordering from a known, reputable website (Amazon, Walmart, Target, GameStop, Toys R Us, Kmart, and honestly even eBay), you're probably safe in that your credit card information is secure and all of the foregoing websites offer refunds and other options in the event something goes wrong. Where can I buy these? World of Nintendo figures are available in brick and mortar retailers and online. The major brick and mortar retailers are:
Toys R Us - most of the figures; exclusive brick and mortar retailer for 6" Target - 2.5", 4", plush (more recently the San-ei plush), and some Mario Kart. Be warned, some stores discontinued carrying this brand, so you may come up completely empty. Kmart - same as Target, but older merchandise; check here for previous waves Walmart - 2.5" figures in exclusive packaging, checkout lines only Walgreens - 2.5" figures in blister packs; plushies GameStop - occasionally 20" Mario will make an appearance. GameStop has been focusing on more gaming toys and collectibles lately, so it's possible they will start carrying more WoN merchandise in the future as well. Also carries San-ei plushies. Go Calendars and Games - 2.5" figures in blister packs, 4" figures, plushies (recently received Wave 3 of the 4" figures); a little more expensive than other stores though FYE - the 20" Link has been seen at FYE stores periodically. As with any FYE stock, it varies greatly by the size of the store. The bigger your local FYE, the more likely you are to find World of Nintendo items there. Meijer - 2.5" figures, 4" figures, plushies, and micro land playsets and figures. Fred Meyer - 2.5" figures, 4" figures, plushies, and micro land playsets and figures. Party City - costume items under Disguise brand Hot Topic - wearable items Nintendo World Store (NYC) - microland figures, 2.5", 4", and 6" figures, and Mario Kart items. Limited selection of plushies usually because NWS carries the higher quality Sanei plushies Various Independently-Owned Game Stores - most major towns have an independent game store or two. In New Jersey, a store called All Things Video Games tends to get figures early as a result of not needing to go through a corporate distribution center ala Target and Toys R Us. Just Press Play in Lancaster, PA is another example. Prices will vary in these stores. Be prepared to spend a little more, but that's consistent with other products at a lot of them. Bonus, sometimes you'll save a little bit by shopping there. If you have a small, independently-owned game store nearby, it's definitely worth checking it out. There are a few independent store owners who frequent this site. Keep an eye out for them and offer them some support if you can!
The major online retailers are:
Amazon - pretty much everything; look for items shipped and sold by Amazon. Also look for anything with Prime shipping as an option, whether you're a Prime member or not. Toys R Us - everything other than costume items Big Bad Toy Store - almost everything, but often in bundles. The 2.5" figures tend to be sold in a box containing duplicates rather than pieced out. Entertainment Earth - just about everything, but very expensive shipping depending on what you're ordering. ToyWiz - just about everything is available or able to be preordered. Exercise discretion because prices are often higher than MSRP, so do your research before ordering to ensure that you don't pay too much. Tokyo Otaku Mode - most of the action figures and plushies; shipping is pricey Party City - costume items
How much do these cost? The prices vary by product and store. Average prices for the most common items are:
Small Mario Kart figures - $3-5 2.5" figures - $3.50-4.00 Micro figure 3-pack - $4.99-5.99 4" figures - $8.99-9.99 Mario Kart launchers - $9.99 Plushies - $9.99-16.99 Micro Land playsets - $11.99 6" figures - $14.99 Microland Deluxe Playsets - $16.99-19.99 10" figures - approx $20 USD 20" figures - $29.99-39.99 Mario Kart RC - $29.99 (wall climbers); I think about $89.99-99.99 for the larger RC vehicle Mario Kart Ride-On - $199.99 MSRP Costume items under the Disguise brand - $14.99-24.99
These are the standard prices. Some smaller retailers may charge up to $12.99 for the 4" figures and $17.99 for certain plushies to offset cost (independently-owned game stores will be the primary ones doing this). Be wary buying online because prices tend to be inflated. It's important to note that prices will vary by location as well as store. In retail, stores charge prices commensurate with what people are likely to pay. If there are two Walmarts in a geographic area and one is near a lot of single family homes and the other is in a lower income area, the former's prices will be higher. Toys R Us prices are higher in some areas than others, and while the difference is only about $2-4, that's still a high percentage. Also of note, while Toys R Us has the best stock with the most consistency, it charges above MSRP for everything except the 6" figures. If you can buy from Target, Meijr, or Kmart, that's probably your best bet. I can't find these anywhere!!! World of Nintendo has soft release dates, unlike amiibo if you're coming from that community. That means things come out in rough windows over time. The first wave came out in August of 2014, but one of the figures clearly depicted on the boxes, 4" Wario, was nowhere to be seen and didn't hit stores until October of 2014. The 6" Wave 1-2 figures, Toon Ganondorf and Metroid, released in Spring of 2015, but they have suffered from extremely limited availability leading to both of them, Metroid especially, becoming scalper fodder. A quick look at eBay and Amazon shows prices for Metroid in the $50 range, which is more than 3x MSRP.~ The most important tip is don't give up hope! EDIT: Based on recent information, and for the interest of clarity, recent email correspondence with Jakks Pacific seems to have indicated that the 6" figure line has been cancelled and there are no plans for future figures in that line. The existing 6" figures are still periodically showing up in stores as of February of 2016. I will update if there is any further information on this issue. Video interviews with the Jakks rep from the February 2016 New York Toy Fair didn't include specific reference (from what I saw) to the 6" figures other than "we have a lot of figures coming" without further clarification. These keep releasing and restocking over time. Wave 2 came out in North American Target locations back in April-May, and recently many Targets received a huge restock of both Wave 1 and Wave 2 of the 4" figures. Don't pay outrageous prices until you've given it plenty of time. One other thing to keep in mind is that, in addition to the virtues of patience, remember that these things take a while to hit stores. Figures leave Jakks Pacific's warehouses, head out to retailer distribution centers, sit there until they are ordered by retailers (which means the retailer has to need a replenishment of its stock), and then go out to stores. Yes, something may have just come out into the stream of commerce, but your area might not receive it for months. By way of example, Fox came out in July-August of 2015 and it took until December for him to start hitting store shelves with any degree of regularity. Why don't my local stores get restocked? World of Nintendo, like many toy lines, shares the same SKU in store inventory systems. Thus, there is no differentiation between 6" Donkey Kong and 6" Metroid in Toys R Us' inventory. It's all the same product. Consequently, Toys R Us stores swimming in 6" DKs are less likely to receive Bowser, Ganondorf, and Metroid. The same applies to Target. On the right, there's an item numbers page which lists the DCPI for Target. If you look it up on a website like Brickseek or ask a Target team member in the store, the PDA will show that the store has 24 of the 2.5" figures. However, when you look at the shelf, you're faced with a wall of Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong and absolutely no Pikmin. Unfortunately, that's just the reality of these things. I'm in the UK and can't find these! Toys R Us carries World of Nintendo in the UK. Amazon will ship to the UK if the item is sold by them. But let's be frank: they're expensive and needlessly rare in the UK. Courtesy of our friends here at this sub from the UK, we also know that The Entertainer stocks most of these figures, in store and online. Mad 4 Toys online does as well. What are the rare figures? This question tends to come up from time to time and people point out that it reeks of scalper sweat, but it's a legitimate question for collector purposes. After all, you don't want to have a rare figure in your hand, not realize it's rare, pass on it, and never be able to find it at MSRP again. Therefore, it's worth discussing here. There are two types of rare figures: (1) rare by virtue of stock numbers and (2) "chaser" figures.
Rare by Virtue of Stock Numbers
4" Link (Skyward Sword) 4" Samus 4" Fox McCloud 4" Link (Ocarina of Time) 4" Bowser Jr. 6" Bowser 6" Ganondorf 6" Metroid Bob-Omb Plush (Wave 1) Goomba Plush (Wave 1) Plush Outset Island Link (very popular plush) 2.5" Wario 2.5" Red Pikmin 2.5" Blue Pikmin 2.5" Cranky Kong 2.5" Purple Pikmin
This is going to vary by area, so this section will not be consistent across North America. Rarity has a ton of variables. For instance, I've seen maybe 10 Link figures total over the last year, but others may have seen more. I could have a little army of 2.5" Warios, but others here have complained that he is unavailable in their area. All of this is to say that what's rare for one may be common for another. This list is not some be-all, end-all master list of rare figures. Rather, it's a list based on in-store and online observation coupled with my daily perusal of this subreddit where, from time to time, people ask or complain about being unable to find some items. It is also worth noting that some figures may have slightly increased rarity due to being included in lower numbers in boxes. When stores receive a box of the 4" figures, for instance, there will generally be 3x of some figures and 2x of others. The figures who get 2x per box should be "rare" comparatively, but it also depends on the character. Consequently, as I noted, this is not some definitive list of rares vs. commons, but it should be fairly representative of the general state of these things nationwide, taking variables into account.
Chaser Figures
2.5" Star Power Mario (limited edition 3000, Walmart exclusive) 2.5" Gold Bullet Bill (limited edition 3000, Walmart exclusive) 2.5" 8-bit Star Power Mario (not limited edition, but Walgreens exclusive) 2.5" 8-bit Black & White Mario (not limited edition, but Walgreens exclusive) 2.5" 8-bit White Link (not limited edition, but Walgreens exclusive)
Chaser figures are usually paint variants of existing figures that are produced in limited quantities. If you see a Star Power Mario and/or Gold Bullet Bill in a Walmart and that's something you want, you should probably get it for your collection because as with any Chaser figure in any toy line, there will always be people trying to rip you off. These are $4 figures. Don't pay $20, $30, $50, etc. for them. They simply aren't worth it. Are there any exclusive figures or variants? Besides exclusivity as a consequence of stock, such as 6" figures only being available at Toys R Us in stores, there are currently four sorts of exclusives.
Walmart Exclusives
The chaser figures are both Walmart exclusive Walmart has its own packaging for the 2.5" line. Right now, we are on Wave 3 of those figures. The packaging is for check-out lines, so the figure is not in a blister pack. There is no difference between these figures and their blister pack counterparts aside from the existence of the two chaser figures. Subsequent waves tend to contain at least a couple of reprints. The current wave consists of Peach, Blue Yoshi, Deku Link, and reprints of Mario, Luigi, and Toon Link.
Entertainment Earth
Entertainment Earth had a Comic Con 2015 exclusive 20" Link figure with nicer paint than the standard version. His shield and sword are reflective, and the chain mail is a little different.
Walgreens
Walgreens has a whole line of 2.5" figures all to itself. Most of these are reprints from other lines, but 3 of them, 8-bit Star Power Mario, 8-bit Black and White Mario, and 8-bit White Link are exclusive to that line.
ComicCon Box
The ComicCon Box guys got an exclusive Samus figure. The difference is that Samus was painted with nice, metallic paint. Samus popped up on various websites for relatively reasonable prices shortly after the box shipped. However, technically the only formal way of getting her was from ComicCon Box, and you'll never see her in a standard retailer.
How do I find out about these things? Congratulations, you're in the right spot! This subreddit is the best place to get World of Nintendo info. This place is generally pretty friendly with people seeking to help one another out. There are a lot of local tracking posts here which might be helpful. Any news that trickles out tends to make its way here pretty quickly and obviously World of Nintendo isn't exactly on the same level of feverish commitment as amiibo, so major gaming news websites won't tend to cover these in any detail. This is by far the best place to get information about World of Nintendo. If you see that something is available in one state nearby, it might behoove you to call or visit your corresponding local store to see if it received a shipment of the same items. Are there any tips for collecting that I should know? My top 10 tips:
(10) Decide which figures you want.
Collecting all of the items in this line is a bear of a task. You can do it, but it's difficult and expensive.
(9) Pick up the phone!
Employees will usually be willing to help you. If you're calling a store for which you know the store's SKU (e.g. Target's DCPIs are listed here), ask the employee to look up a SKU (pronounced skew) for you.
(8) Politeness is a Collector's Best Friend
When you call a store, be extremely polite on the phone. You're not calling GameStop; the person on the other end who is working at these stores is substantially less likely to be a gamer. Most people know who Mario is; fewer people know who Link is, and far fewer know Fox McCloud. If you happen to get a gamer on the other end of the line, congratulations! If you don't, be prepared to politely explain what the packaging looks like.
(7) Know where in the stores the items are kept
When you travel to the stores, you need to have some idea of where to look. Here's a quick guide:
Toys R Us - action figure aisle, usually near Minecraft and Power Rangers items; sometimes excess figures will be on an endcap Target - action figure aisle near Minecraft toys, or, more recently, collectible endcap with Game of Thrones figures and Pop! figures Walmart - check-out aisle, usually to the right underneath the candy where smaller toys are located as children's impulse items. Periodically in the collectible toy section located in the vicinity of the check-out aisles, but much less frequent than in the aisles themselves. Yes, you have to be "that guy" who goes from aisle to aisle. Best time to go is early morning or later in the evening when there will be less stares from people waiting to check out. Kmart - toy aisle near Minecraft toys. RC Mario Kart items may be with other vehicle-related toys an aisle over. Walgreens - toy aisle beside the eclectic range of toys from cheap, crappy things to high quality Assassin's Creed and Game of Thrones toys. Go Calendars and Games - To the right of the door when you walk in; somewhat small section. May vary for mall stores. GameStop - Behind the counter or above the door to the back room in some stores. Since the sole item they stocked so far was the 20" Mario, he's kind of hard to miss if you look around.
(6) Gasoline is Expensive
It is a fundamental truth that about 80% of the time, a trip to the toy store will yield nothing. You can call, but sometimes it's worth going to a store. However, whether you're a kid whose parents are driving you around or a teen or adult looking for these figures, gas will factor into this endeavor. Most people shop frequently at Walmart, Kmart, and/or Target, so there's no harm in checking the toy aisle or check-out aisle when you go to one of those locations for something else. If you're going to Toys R Us just to see if they have anything new, it might be worth a phone call first.
(5) The Benefits of Buying Online
This one is directly related to number (6). Big Bad Toy Store is a reputable retailer that takes preorders for figures, but charges a little more per figure. Thus, the 2.5" figures are usually in the $5 range and the 4" are closer to $12.99 instead of $8.99. However, if it saves you a lot of trips to the toy store and gives you peace of mind knowing you have your complete set secured, Big Bad Toy Store is a pretty good option. If you're going to go to the store weekly anyway, it might not be worth it. This is a personal cost-benefit analysis, but it's something worth considering.
(4) Help Others Out
While amiibo has become something of a competition or a race to buy or preorder the figures, World of Nintendo hasn't hit that point yet. If you see figures in the wild that you know are sought after and you don't buy them for yourself and/or already have them, post something here! It's always appreciated either by those who directly benefit or those who hear that something is in stores in one area and manage to find it in their own respective stores elsewhere.
(3) Don't Give Up
I mentioned this above, but it bears repeating: if you can't find something, don't just give up. As far as we know, nothing is discontinued. Bowser was unavailable for months and suddenly had a Toys R Us restock in June. Metroid and Ganondorf still haven't made it to most Toys R Us stores. Don't believe those dumb eBay titles like "Rare and sold out!" for these figures. They're rare, but definitely not sold out, and Jakks is aware of the demand. Be patient and you'll eventually find the figures.
(2) Don't Pass Stuff Up
If you see something you want in a store and can realistically afford it, don't walk away from it. While these are continually rolling out, eventually some of the earlier ones will have to be discontinued to make room for future waves and then your only choice will be horribly inflated prices. This is doubly true if you have a favorite character. If you love Samus and see her in a Target, buy her. These aren't the highest quality figures out there, but they're neat and they pose well. You'll regret not buying it more than you will regret spending the $10 on it.
(1) Don't Get Frustrated, and Have Fun!
In a lot of ways, World of Nintendo is more frustrating than amiibo. Figures don't have release dates, so we learn about their releases through people physically seeing them in stores. Smaller stores tend to get them first because they receive shipments directly from Jakks (a store in New Jersey has been a wonderful source of information for us here). Figure availability ranges tremendously.
Through it all, these are neat little Nintendo toys that are just fun to have and to set up. They're not the highest quality, but they are pretty nice for the price. Keep looking, and when you get them, display them in a way that works with whatever you're going for, whether you're a New in Box collector or an out of box display person. tl;dr World of Nintendo is a line of figures with a good amount of variety. You'll find figures for characters who have never before received any type of figurine in this brand. Base 1 was built super early on, probably before I went to the Nether. I actually stayed here for quite a while. Base 2 and 3 were built a while after that, but I didn't really stay at either of them for longer than a few game days. Base 4 and 5 were built very recently, within the past couple weeks. They were each inhabited for only a few days.
