With the 2016 Melbourne Cup just around the corner, I wanted to give our thoughts of some local and international raiders to keep your eye on for the big race. (“Local” to us is Australia to those reading from further afield). I’ll also give a rating after each selection. Would be great to see what you think of the tips and to see your selections too. Between us let’s find some winners! If you’re new to racing then I’ve written up a Horse Racing Betting Strategy article which you can find if you click on the OLBGAustralia profile link. If you are not into betting or tipping then this article is not for you. We always want to keep betting fun, so please be sensible. Local Horses to Watch Hartnell 6yo G (Authorized x Debonnaire) John O’Shea The new Australian track star, Hartnell will be sure to have his fans if he is entered on the Melbourne Cup journey. We’ll be watching him closely in the run up to the big race. “The most improved horse in the country, Hartnell will be very hard to beat in this years Melbourne Cup. He has been spacing his rivals this prep and performing in WFA racing so with a good weight and under handicap conditions he will be the hardest to beat. Despite struggling over 2 miles in the past, reports are that he has been settling much better in his races this time in which should help him stay the trip.” OLBG Australia Rating 6.5/10 Jameka 4yo M (Myboycharlie x Mine Game) Ciaron Maher “She is an extremely consistent mare who was just behind the winner in several G1 races in the Autumn. She is racing in good form this prep yet again and you know she will be around the mark. Her Naturalism win was very impressive against other Cup hopefuls like Gallant and if she can manage to stay the trip will be very hard to beat.” OLBG Australia Rating 7/10 Almoonqith 7yo H (Dynaformer x Bohemian Lady) “A bit of a wildcard, Almoonqith could be one to bob up at odds in this years Cup. Having already guaranteed a start in the race connections can take their time with him this time in and just have him ready to go on the day. He was never a chance in last years cup when he sat at the tail in what was a farcically slow run race. He has strong 2 mile form as well which is good when there are question marks over a lot of the others running out the trip.” OLBG Australia Rating 6/10 Gallante 6yo G (Montjeu x Crazy Volume) Robert Hickmott “At a bit of odds Gallante looks a good bet to win this years Melbourne Cup. He won the Sydney Cup in the Autumn over 2 miles where he had no problems running out the trip from the front. He seems to have returned in great form this Spring too with a very good 2nd to Jameka in the Naturalism first up where he had to carry 58.5kg and give 3kg to the winner. He should be a good improver off that run and be in with a good shot in the Cup.” OLBG Australia Rating 6/10 Real Love 6yo M (Desert King x Flaming Heart) Darren Weir “A Darren Weir mare who is flying this prep. After a fast finishing 2nd first up she came out and won the JRA Cup by 3 lengths and announced herself as a legitimate cups hope. There are question marks over whether she can run out the distance but she has a good turn of foot and if the race isn't run very fast (which is quite often isn't lately) then she will be the hardest to hold out at the end.” OLBG Australia Rating 3/10 International Horses Wicklow Brave 8yo G (Beat Hollow x Moraine) Willie Mullins “Wicklow Brave comes into the Cup with great international form having beaten the one-time favourite and Prix de l'arc de Triomphe placegetter Order of St George at his latest start. If Order of St George was running he would be a short priced favourite so at the EW odds Wicklow Brave is good value.” OLBG Australia Rating 7/10 Curren Mirotic 9yo G (Heart’s Cry x Star Mie) Osamu Hirata “Tipping the Japanese raider Curren Mirotic to get the win here. Japanese horses have a very good record when coming to Australia with Delta Blues/Pop Rock running the quinella and Admire Rakti winning the Caulfield Cup. This horse has a similar profile to those horses and comes through similar form races including the Tenno Sho. Even though he is 9 years old he has good tactical speed and will be able to take a forward position which really helps.” OLBG Australia Rating 6/10 Scottish 5yo G (Teofilo x Zeiting) Charlie Appleby “He has very consistent form over the past 12 months and is a younger horse on the way up. Despite not having run over 2 miles before he has strong form around horses like Highland Reel who have run and performed very well in Australia in the past. Our 2 mile races aren't as strong as European 2 mile races so the distance shouldnt be too much of a concern and he has a turn of foot that is needed in Australian racing.” OLBG Australia Rating 4/10 Woould be good to hear any thoughts on these!
2019 Tenno Sho Tips The Tenno Sho will be run and won this Sunday Australian time with over $2 million in prize money on the line. All eyes will be on Almond Eye heading into this event after her shock defeat last preparation in the Grade One Yasuda Kinen over a mile. The gates were full in the spring rendition of the Tenno Sho for the first time since 2005, when 13th pick Suzuka Mambo came out of nowhere to take home the honors. The field was also full in 2003 and 2004, and both times, underdogs Hishi Miracle (seventh choice) and Ingrandire (10th choice) prevailed, respectively. Japanese superstar Almond Eye has consolidated her position as the country’s best with a scintillating victory in the Tenno Sho in Tokyo. The reigning Japanese Horse of the Year, Almond Eye beat nine other Group One winners to add the Tenno Sho to her Group One Dubai Turf win earlier this year. The maximum penalty for betting with illegal or overseas bookmakers is 9 months' imprisonment and a HK$30,000 fine. Don't gamble your life away.
