Inter do not sell their best young kids
Lets do away with that mis-conception for the final time. It's old, tired, misplaced, and been butchered to death for so long that the corpse of that joke has now started turning into fossil fuel. I'm so tired of reading it (here, at soccer, or even at Interpersempre) that I decided to make a post to dispel this notion.
The Worst incidents :-
Let's start with the worst of the lot first. Inter sold Pirlo to Milan (for Coco), Coutinho to Liverpool (who got them back into relevance, before funding their entire rebuild), Bonucci to Genoa (who went on to become a JuBe legend) and Zaniolo to Roma (who's now valued at 50+m). Have I missed anyone else of note? Nope? Ok, then. Now I'll tackle each one individually.
When Inter sold Pirlo to Milan, he was an attacking mid, not a register. He was struggling because was required a lot of time & space on the ball, and it simply wasn't afforded to him by Serie A defences. Only after he went to Ancelotti's Milan, and he turned him into a deep lying playmaker, did his talent shine through. We missed a great one, (and got Coco, of all people, in return) but few could've predicted this change of position was what was needed.
When Bonucci was sold to Genoa at the time, most people believed that Bonucci was looking better than he was next due to being next to Ranocchia (at Bari), who was considered the real talent. He was sold as part payment for Milito & Motta. Those two powered our Treble. Much as we would've liked to keep him, I'm happy with the outcome.
Coutinho was struggling with us at the time. He was also an attacking mid/ winger who had Sneijder and Eto'o in front of him. Moratti's well had run dry, and we needed to fund a move for Kovacic. Mistakes were made in not taking a % of future sales, or including a buy- back but those weren't in fashion back then. Things like this happen at big clubs (Pogba, Salah, De Bruyne, Sancho, Cambiasso) from time to time.
Zaniolo was sold to part fund a move for Nainggolan. At the time, he was the apple of Spalletti's eye, and Spalletti had guided us extremely competently in his first season. He made a demand, we acquiesced. It should further be noted that Vecchi, his junior coach, was surprised at how quickly he broke out. This was someone who saw him play daily. Even Monchi was asking for Pinamonti, and didn't consider him essential to the deal. Genoa had the option to take either him or Valietti, and chose Valietti. Simply put, no-one saw this; not our youth coach, not the Genoa scouts, not the Roma DS, no one (except for the guy who recommended him to Monchi).
That's all there is to it.
The middling sales :-
These are guys that went on to have (or are having) a respectable Serie A careers, but nothing to write him about (in a manner of speaking).
Alfred Duncan (sold for 3m)
Ibrahim MBaye (sold for 4m)
Marco Andreolli (sold as part payment to Roma for Chivu)
Marco Benassi (sold for 4.8m)
Daniel Bessa (sold for 1.2m)
Cristiano Biraghi (sold for 5m)
These are players who're playing regularly in mid table Serie A sides. They would've helped with the Home Grown Status too, if we were in the Champions League back then. However, none of them were Inter level starters back then. Most still aren't. They would never have developed if they hadn't moved. And their value would've tanked while they sat on our bench. Most importantly, every cent they brought in contributed to FFP and future purchases. The Best sales :- Without disrespecting the guys, some of the names below had big reputations, and came nowhere close to delivering on it. These were smart sales.
George Puscas (sold for 3.3m)
Federico Bonazolli (sold for 4.5m)
Joel Obi (sold for 2.2m)
Lorenzo Crisetig (sold for 4.5m)
Fabio Eguelfi (sold for 6m; probably "creative accounting")
Ruben Botta (sold for 2.7m)
Marko Livaja (sold for 5m)
Davide Faraoni (sold for 8m)
Luc Castaignos (sold for 6m)
Rene Krhin (sold for 1.3m)
Senna Miangue (sold for 3.2m)
Rey Manan (sold for 2m) These are players we sold at the peak of their values, and most won't reach the value again (though some still have a shot). Now compare this to the number of fuck-ups we did, and to good-to-great sales we've made. These are just the 'big' name sales I've listed. I bet most of you had forgotten some of the names listed here, but still 'knew' about them. i.e.- They had a big reputation while at Inter.
Unknown quantities :-
These are the names that have gone out of our system in the recent windows that's too young to pass judgement on.
Valietti (6m)
Odgaard (4.6m)
Bettella (7m; as payment for Bastoni)
Zappa (3m)
Carraro (5m)
Most of them have buy-backs, or % of future sales. i.e.- We still retain a degree of control over their future. The reason I've listed all these is simple. This list should tell you what you need to know about this business. At a club like Inter, it's hard to gauge the potential of players when they're moving around like fresh produce. In all that time, Inter have lost 4 surefire stars (and I'm being generous to include Zaniolo here), and moved most of the 'potential' at the right time. From the current crop, names like Colidio, Merola, Pompetti, Schiro, Mulattieri, Salcedo, Vergani etc. stand out. How many, do you think, will go on to really 'break-out'? Keeping all this in mind, I think it's best we lay that tired 'Inter sell their best kids' joke to rest.
DAE Harry Redknapp does interviews through car window? What about those Messi rumours? Guess this one's going down to the wire. How many umlauts can Arsenal bring in to the squad today? HARRY "LIONEL MESSI" KANE SIGNS A 5 YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION - FUTURE GOLDEN BALL WINNER? What has been your favourite bit of business so far this window? And why is it Jermaine Defoe moving to Sunderland? DAE Man United often linked with Sneijder??? Bet this happens agen xD I wonder who Barcelona are going to buy... oh wait!! Haha, top bantz m8 Who do you want your club to buy, and why is it Danny Ings? Edit 1: Harry fucking Kane. Edit 2: What was Russel Wilson thinking with that pass??? Edit 3: Oops, wrong thread. Edit 4: (15:02) Nothing's happened for the last half an hour, anyone else ready for the floodgates to open? Edit 5: (15:07) Just spotted Oxlade-Chamberlain down my local chippy, does this mean he's coming to Everton? Edit 6: (15:08) Might've been Gibbs now I think about it. Edit 7: (15:29) Peter Odemwingie is on a plane to Madrid because, according to his Dad, Carlo Ancelotti referred to him in a press conference as "Not terrible". Edit 8: (15:35) I was just listening to the new Taylor Swift album and I realised if you play "All You Had to Do Was Stay" in reverse, you can make out the words "Lionel Messi to Hull" - anyone else spot this? Edit 9: (16:18) Anyone else watch the new Game of Thrones trailer? Pretty good eh? Edit 10: (16:25) So Robert Huth is going on loan from Stoke to Leicester. Huth-ought that was going to happen? Hahahahaha, I love pun threads. Edit 11: (16:36) Right guys, I won't be able do update for the next four hours - I'm driving to Newcastle to find out more about the Davide Santon deal. See you on the other side! Edit 12: (21:18) I'm back, turns out no-one is that bothered about Santon. Who knew? Edit 13: (21:38) Watching Sky Sports News now, I think they should have more fans standing behind the reporters. I really like it when they do that. Edit 14: (21:45) I really, really, really like Niall Quinn. Edit 15: (23:18) I guess it's over now. But with deals like Kyle Lafferty going from Norwich to Caykur Rizespor and Barry Bannan moving to Bolton you can't say it didn't live up to the hype.
Interesting Andy Mitten column on WyScout and United
Copied from facebook group. Over the years we have missed out on a lot of targets. A lot doesn't even cover it. Shearer. Weah. Dinho. Guardiola. And off late Hazard, Moura, Ozil, Sneijder etc etc. It's not because this is an 'unattractive destination' or 'transfer impotency' or being 'immature at dealings'. It's because we do things our way. And if we can't do it our way we look for the next option. For eg, we almost never pay agents. A little more detail - From Andy Mitten's column - "I’m at the Wyscout forum in Barcelona, one of the very few journalists present. One hundred of the world’s leading clubs are here, with 300 agents who pay €10,000 a year to be a member of this little known group who hold these exclusive events. Money that buys the agents access to clubs to do deals, a kind of speed-dating for transfers in the cloak and dagger world of player sales. City, Chelsea, Benfica, Liverpool, Juventus all use Wyscout. Most of the big South American clubs too. United don’t. United keep themselves to themselves, it’s their style. Negotiate on their terms. Deal with people on their terms." So that is there. Is it frustrating? Sometimes. But am I proud of our system and method of doing things our way? You fucking bet. And the results so far havent exactly been too bad, have they?
Another move. Nice midfielder Wesley Sneijder is set for another move in the January transfer window, this time leaving for a shock club. That club is LA Galaxy as Sneijder calls time on his ... He was actually the first Dutch player to net 100 caps, although Wesley Sneijder (133) and Edwin van der Sar (130) have since surpassed his tally. During his time in an Oranje shirt he played in two World Cups - you may remember his assist at France 1998 (above) - and three European Championships, and was named in the “team of the tournament ... Although the 33-year-old has been linked with a move to Sampdoria and Los Angeles FC, he says he has not made a decision on his next club. "I don’t have any future plans yet," he told beIN Sports. Sneijder is on a whopping £250,000 a week at Inter, while United’s top earner is Wayne Rooney on £220,000 and Ferguson, probably wisely, doesn’t want to rock the boat by changing the wage structure at a club where he has consistently fostered a superb team spirit . Wesley Sneijder is edging closer to a new club and, sorry Manchester United fans, but once again, the Dutchman isn't making his way to Old Trafford.
