Having returned from the World Cup to intense speculation about his happiness under manager Jose Mourinho, the France midfielder was named skipper of a side that also included debutant Fred.
Meanwhile, recent United target Harry Maguire lines up in defence for the visitors, who had England striker Jamie Vardy on the bench as James Maddison and Ricardo Pereira made their debuts.

MAN UTD FANS: OWNERS HAVEN'T BACKED JOSE

Man Utd Supporters Trust vice-chairman Sean Bones believes Jose Mourinho has not had sufficient backing from the club's owners.
With Fred the only first-team addition made over the summer, Bones feels the owners have left Mourinho a huge task to mount a title challenge with his largely-unchanged squad.
"What you want is your owners to put your manager in the best possible position to have a tilt at winning the league and obviously we have fallen short of that," said Bones.

NEWCASTLE'S LETTER TO FANS

Newcastle made a net profit of £21m this window and after seeing supporters blast their activity again, the club have posted a public letter to fans, urging everyone to "pull in the same direction."
Here is that letter - posted on the club's official website and signed by managing director Lee Charnley, boss Rafa Benitez and captain Jamaal Lascelles - in full:
"Dear supporters, as the transfer window closes and attentions turn to the start of the season, we wanted to make this joint statement, on behalf of everyone at the club.
"Doing good business in a transfer window is about ending the window clearly stronger than when you started and we believe we have done this. The view we all share is that we have a better squad now than the one that finished tenth last season and all involved have worked tirelessly to make this happen.
"Collectively, we must extend praise to Steve Nickson and his recruitment team. Their operations are year-round, but they have worked day and night in recent months to support efforts to enhance the squad.
"We are all excited about the seven players who have joined us this summer. Their combined experience in the Premier League and at an international level – with three of them appearing at this summer’s World Cup for their respective countries – cannot fail to strengthen us.
"Martin Dubravka and Kenedy have already proven themselves to be fantastic players here and we are confident that Ki Sung-yeung, Fabian Schar, Yoshinori Muto, Salomon Rondon and Federico Fernandez will be excellent additions to the dressing room.
"Given our finishing position last season, we already had a team of players who were more than capable of performing well in the Premier League. They have shown heart, guts and determination and the inference that they are ‘Championship’ players and not good enough is unfair and untrue. The players all believe in themselves and in the quality of the squad, and we all believe in the players.
"Now, it’s about all of us pulling in the same direction, for the good of the club. This came through strongly in a recent positive call between our owner and senior members of the squad, who agreed that better dialogue going forward will benefit all parties and is in the best interests of the club.
"With the transfer window now closed, the focus should be on unity and getting behind the efforts on the pitch.
"We know our supporters are incredibly passionate and we know that passion will be channelled into supporting the players we have in black and white on Saturday, and every matchday thereafter home or away."
15:30

MORE IN AT STOKE?

Stoke signed Sam Clucas on Deadline Day but boss Gary Rowett has suggested there will be further arrivals before the loan window shuts for Sky Bet EFL clubs on August 31.
That extended window also allows for loans with an option to buy and Rowett, speaking to the club's official website, is hoping to make some shrewder moves with more time to scour the market.
"If you aren’t careful then you can end up rushing a deal or two and ending up with some players for the season that you may not have necessarily wanted," he said.
"It shows far greater common sense to wait and then make better decisions over the next week or two. The arrival of Sam certainly won’t signal the end of it from our point of view."
15:16

'HAZARD, WILLIAN EXIT IMPOSSIBLE'

Batshuayi might have departed but there is no chance of Chelsea losing Eden Hazard and Willian before the transfer window shuts in continental Europe, according to Maurizio Sarri.
Speaking ahead of Saturday's Premier League opener at Huddersfield, Sarri said: "Here the market is closed, so we cannot change important players now. It's impossible."
15:12

BATSHUAYI LEAVES BLUES

So it's another loan spell for Chelsea's Michy Batshuayi, a World Cup semi-finalist with Belgium.
The 24-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund, having found his opportunities at Stamford Bridge limited following the arrival of Olivier Giroud. He scored nine goals in 14 appearances for the Bundesliga side but his spell was cut short in April when he suffered ankle ligament damage.
Valencia said: "Valencia CF have reached this Friday an agreement with Chelsea FC for the transfer of Michy Batshuayi until the end of this season."
15:05

ZOUMA TO EVERTON

It's taken a while for this one to be confirmed but the paperwork was submitted in time and Everton have finally announced Kurt Zouma's arrival on loan for 2018/19.
Zouma joins Lucas Digne, Richarlison and Joao Virginia - plus Deadline Day signings Bernard, Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes - at Goodison Park.

REAL WANT THIAGO

Sky in Germany: Real Madrid are interested in signing Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara.
The Spaniard was the only player new Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui asked for, the two having worked together with Spain U21s and the senior national side.

11:44

JOSE: SQUAD IS THE SAME

Jose Mourinho says his Manchester United squad "is the same" as last season following a frustrating transfer window for the club.
"It is the same, the same squad as last season," Mourinho told Sky Sports. "We changed the goalkeepers with Lee [Grant] because Joel [Pereira] Is such a good young goalkeeper that he needs to play.
"We changed Daley Blind for a 19-year-old kid [Diego Dalot] that we believe has the potential to play right-back or left-back and we changed Michael Carrick for Fred so our squad is the same.
"He [Fred] is a midfield player, he's not a striker, not a central defender, he's a midfield player that technically is very good. In that sense, typically, the Brazilian player has a very rich luggage in technical terms and also in some static beauty movements of football. He's a player to really enjoy, if he adapts as soon as possible."

BRUCE UNDERSTANDS GREALISH SADNESS

Steve Bruce says keeping Jack Grealish at Aston Villa is great for himself, but he can understand the midfielder's disappointment at missing out on a move to Tottenham.
"It is great for myself," said Bruce. "I can understand the disappointment from Jack, in some ways, but he has been terrific and respectable towards the club.
"Let's be fair, Spurs are a huge club in England and in Europe but he has taken the decision from the owner and hopefully we can move forward.
"He [Grealish] will hopefully take us to where we want to get to and fulfil his ambitions with ourselves. I think what is vitally important to everybody is that the owner has put out a statement of intent."

Match Thread: QPR vs. Aston Villa

QPR vs. Aston Villa
Venue: Loftus Road
Kick Off: 16:00pm BST/GMT
Referee: Oliver
Why not join the IRC live soccer chat?
With Joey Barton in fine form since joining the London club, and a Villa side who need a result this weekend after a poor midweek performance against Bolton, this match could be a corker!!
So let's get the match facts.
Match facts/preview
TEAM NEWS QPR have no fresh injury concerns but Kieron Dyer remains out with a foot injury and Clint Hill joined Nottingham Forest on loan this week.
Jamie Mackie is not yet in contention but is back in full training after a double leg break last January.
Aston Villa are hoping deadline-day signing Jermaine Jenas will finally be fit after a thigh injury.
But Darren Bent has been ruled out with a groin problem, while fellow striker Emile Heskey remains an absentee.
MATCH PREVIEW The last time QPR beat Villa, pop star Jarvis Cocker was about to stun the world! When Kevin Gallen grabbed the only goal of that victory in December 1995, Michael Jackson was Top of the Pops with his Earth Song dirge. Cocker was so enraged at Jackson's performance at the Brits a few weeks later, he invaded the stage and waggled his bottom in Jacko's face!
People who downvote Match threads have aids, let's see who actually reads this stuff. I'll go for a first Rangers top-flight win since they beat West Ham in April 1996 QPR now have someone who loves to get in the face of opponents and they hope Joey Barton continues his abrasive form.
He's already driven them a long way from the naive opening hammering by Bolton and can inspire a first home Premier League victory of the season against Villa, who were poor in the midweek cup defeat by Bolton and who are fortunate to still be unbeaten in the league. I mean, I bet I can put anything, an nobody will give two shits.
Injuries to Darren Bent and Emile Heskey have hit them. Gabby Agbonlahor, though, is looking sharp. He's scored half of Villa's league goals and three in his last four Premier League games. His quick movement in from wide positions will threaten QPR's new-look defence, where Luke Young will be up against his old team. I mean, who do redditors think they are, I create a thread for a Premier League match, because nobody else can be bothered, and they downvote me. Well, guess what, I give you something to downvote, not that you will notice.
With Shaun Wright-Phillips in sparkling form in his opening two matches, Barton's leadership and DJ Campbell's quick feet in the box, I'll go for a first Rangers top-flight home win since they beat West Ham in April 1996.
Earth Song was just an insipid memory by then. Mark Morrison was at Number One with Return of the Mack. Now he did have a bit of snap and snarl about him - just like Joey!
MATCH FACTS Head-to-head
QPR are unbeaten at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League (W3, D1). Villa won 4-2 in the last league meeting between the sides - that was in March 1996 when Dwight Yorke scored twice, while Kevin Gallen was on the scoresheet for QPR. Gallen also scored the winner when the teams last met in the league at Loftus Road in December 1995. Managers Neil Warnock and Alex McLeish previously met in the 2008-09 season when both were in the Championship - McLeish's Birmingham beating Warnock's Crystal Palace at St Andrew's, and the sides then drew 0-0 at Selhurst Park. QPR
QPR haven't scored at Loftus Road yet this season in league or cup. Last season, Rangers won their first four home league matches without conceding a goal. Captain Joey Barton scored the opening goal for Newcastle in their 6-0 win over Aston Villa last season. Aston Villa
Aston Villa are unbeaten after five games of this season's Premier League (for the first time since 2006-07) but have drawn four of their matches. Gabby Agbonlahor has scored half of Villa's league goals this season and has scored three in his last four league games. Only Newcastle have conceded fewer goals than Villa in this season's Premier League. Darren Bent has been caught offside 12 times this season, more than any other Premier League player.
So where are both teams in the league at the moment, I hear you ask?
1 Man Utd 6 17 16 2 Man City 6 14 16 3 Chelsea 6 5 13 4 Newcastle 6 4 12 5 Liverpool 6 0 10 6 Tottenham 5 0 9 7 Stoke 6 -2 9 8 Aston Villa 5 2 7 9 Everton 5 0 7 10 QPR 5 -2 7 11 Wolves 6 -3 7 12 Arsenal 6 -5 7 13 Sunderland 5 2 5 14 Norwich 5 -2 5 15 Wigan 6 -4 5 16 Swansea 6 -5 5 17 Fulham 6 -3 4 18 Blackburn 6 -5 4 19 West Brom 6 -5 4 20 Bolton 6 -8 3
So both teams have had the better of performances out of 20 this season so far, with both teams resting in the top 10.
So you're now interested after reading all that, where can you watch?
Well, if you're a British or Irish citizen, Sky Sports is free this weekend, meaning at 3.30pm GMT, you will be able to pick up the game on Sky Sports 1, without paying the extra £5 per week. Bonus! If you can't find a TV but you're a Sky customer, why not use the SKY GO application, type that in Google and get yourself signed up. For people who neither have Sky or the option of purchasing Sky, you will be needing a stream?
