Season 4 Guesses (AFTER CLUES)

My guesses are based on celebrities who I can see actually doing the show
Broccoli - "I'm a brocco-lean, mean, heart-pumping machine. After all, it's how I got my six-pack." so this to me is not much, other then someone who has a six pack and likes working out. I get WWE/WWF vibes so here I am going to go with Chris Jericho.
Baby Alien - , "I'm a friendly UFO, unless of course, you are my foe. If my competition thinks I look innocent, then, Houston, they've got a problem." "If you're looking for a hint about this Baby Alien, all you have to do is look to the stars," and we see a night sky with the number "5" glowing in the stars." So this one had more clues, I feel the Houston we have a problem reference for space may actually be a clue they are from Houston. There is also a significance with the number 5. My best guess is Latoya Luckett (one of the original Destinys Child members)
Crocodile - "My fans are gonna be so excited when they see me on "The Masked Singer." Not that I'm all reputation, but I am all reptile" "A special set of keys reversed my game forever. Tic-Tac-Woah!" We also see a bunch of tic-tac-toe games written out in the background." This is does not give us much at all to work with a lot of word play. Best I can come up with is Melissa Rivers since her mother Joan Rivers was on Hollywood Squares (a tic tac toe game).
Dragon - "I can relate to the Dragon, because I enjoy getting fired up." "If you want a hot clue to finding my identity, just look into stocks and bonds," as we see a stock market chart." "I've also always been a creative type, so I guess I'm kind of an Imagine Dragon." This gives us a lot more to work with and I think I know exactly who this is, a chef who has also appeared on CNBC for Stock Draft and welcome to masked singer Bobby Flay.
Giraffe - "If you're looking for a hint to my identity, you should know that I share something in common with a powerful giant," and we see him as a giant giraffe walking through a city as people flee, Godzilla style. Not much to go off here but I am going to with Bronson Arroyo for his something in common with a powerful giant might refer to Barry Zito a former Giant in the MLB who was on last season. Giraffe also looks tall and he is 6 ft 4.
Gremlin - "I'm the Gremlin because life can be chaotic, so you always have to make time for play. And who's more playful than a gremlin?" "Check the Gremlin manual and you'll see I can thrive when the temperature is a cool 66.5 degrees." This is rough but 66.5 degrees is the temperature of the Arctic Circle which is ice so I am going with Vanilla Ice.
Jellyfish - "Burrr! I assure you that even though I may be cold blooded, I have a warm and glowing flow with H20." "You can search the entire ocean for a notion as to who I am." This gives us hardly anything but I am going off the original Shedd Aquarium in Chicago clue and saying Jennifer Hudson.
Lips - "Trying to infiltrate "The Masked Singer" stage is like trying to break into a Las Vegas money vault. I can understand why security would be so tight. Who wouldn't love to pucker up to these juicy lips?" "If you want a hint about me, I own who I am. I know that my voice can go high, but my dishes go deep." Based off this clues and the costume I have to stick with Jefree Star.
Mushroom - "Mushrooms are resilient and thrive in all circumstances. Being here has made me realize this show is fertile ground to explore another side of yourself." "If you want to know who's behind my mask, you'll need to figure out who's under... My hats," as we see pictures of The Mushroom wearing various different hats. " Here we have a good amount to work with and the hats reference I feel means they are a jack of all trades. I also believe this is a male not a female so I am going with Jonathan Groff who was on Glee (Fox reference) and is a singer, Broadway star, and has also done TV shows.
Popcorn - Says her performance is going to be "in 3-D: dynamic, delightful and diva-licious." We see her dressing room and there's a photo of a green cow on her mirror. Here I am going to make a crazy guess and say Rachel Ray since Green Cow is linked to New York where she is from, she is the diva of celebrity chefs and she had a 3D Halloween Episode.
Seahorse - "Living in the ocean can be dangerous, so it's always good to find a quiet place to hide. America, you'll never figure out who I am, even if you try your sea level best." Here I have to go with Emily Blunt do to the quiet place reference.
Serpent - If you want to know how I instantly appeared, here's the prescription number to my identity." We see a prescription bottle with the number #31118. I feel this has to be an NFL Player with the superbowls in the overall stats, I just dont know which one so no guess here yet.
Snow Owls - "We are the Snow Owls, and we're ready to ruffle feathers and show everyone it takes two to make a dream come true." "We're here because performing on stage with someone else is always twice as nice. We're on our hands and knees hoping for victory. After all, we are birds of 'Pray.'" Best I can guess at Julianne Hough & Derek Hough at the moment.
Squiggly Monster - "The fun part about being a squiggly monster is it's got a soft side and an edgy side. That means I get to be lovable while also being a wild child."We see the Squiggly Monster with a white puppy, which is seated in front of a birthday cake. Squiggly Monster says, "I bet you are crazy to party with, dog!""It's very fitting that I have so many appendages. After all, I'm known for having a lot of hands to latch onto" This for me is going to be a female and i get Beetlejuice and Stranger Things vibes so I am going with Winona Ryder.
Sun - "I'm the Sun because I love to light up the world around me. We've all had periods of darkness, but my powerful rays have been known to break through the clouds." "If you're trying to figure out who I am, here's a hint. This sun knows how to shine like a torch, even during the freezing winter. America, my identity will never dawn on you." Here is our Olympic Gold Medalist but who ? I am going with winter Athlete so perhaps Lindsey Vaughn?
The Watchamacallit - "The high level of precautions on this show is unlike anything I've ever seen before. Security has everything here on lockdown. They enter secret codes to get through secret passageways. How am I supposed to meet all of my secret admirers?""Some might say that my career had a magical start," while we see someone holding an Ace of Spades that bursts into smoke." I dont know about you but I get Criss Angel vibes here

[OC] An insight in the world of football kits - 454 teams that play in the most unusual colors

I would like to start with a humble warning, that this will be a longer than "usual" post. Hopefully, it will compensate with the amount of information you might deem as interesting. :)

After finishing my first journey into the world of colors in football, by counting which teams play in red & black color combination, I decided to pursue my next curiosity:
How many football teams in the world play in unusual colors?
By this, I was thinking of teams which have a “main” color that is rarely used (grey, brown, purple, pink, etc.) or use an uncommon color combination.
Because of this coronavirus madness that is going on, I was able to spend more hours for this project than I planned, so in the end I was able to go into almost every single league in the world. I checked teams from over 400 divisions, of different tiers, from all continents. Although it’s not an official list, I tried to include as many clubs as possible on it.
Now, you're probably asking yourself "How do you measure how rare or how common is in football a color / combination of colors?"
An exact answer is impossible to give, so I started the study using my own experience as a football supporter, finally finding an useful purpose for the thousands of hours spent on watching football games. Therefore, I used a subjective point of view and excluded the color combinations that I, personally, considered to be the most common in football teams, namely:

The selection criteria for the teams were as follows:
  1. The team should have their main kit in colors which are different than the ones enumerated above;
  2. The team must have played or been associated with the colors for several seasons;
  3. The team should be currently active (dissolved clubs were not included).

But enough introduction, let’s jump straight into the list of the most uncommon kit colors in the world of football:

What a USL D1 league might look like

TL;DR: Man with too much time on his hands goes deep down the rabbit hole on a concept this sub already didn’t seem that enthusiastic about. If you really want to skip ahead, CTRL+F “verdict” and it’ll get you there.
Two days ago, u/MrPhillyj2wns made a post asking whether USL should launch a D1 league in order to compete in Concacaf. From the top voted replies, it appears this made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.
But I’ve been at home for eight weeks and I am terribly, terribly bored.
So, I present to you this overview of what the USL pyramid might look like if Jake Edwards got a head of steam and attempted to establish a USSF-sanctioned first division. This is by no means an endorsement of such a proposal or even a suggestion that USL SHOULD do such a thing. It is merely an examination of whether they COULD.
Welcome to the Thunderdome USL Premiership
First, there are some base-level assumptions we must make in this exercise, because it makes me feel more scientific and not like a guy who wrote this on Sunday while watching the Belarusian Premier League (Go BATE Borisov!).
  1. All D1 teams must comply with known USSF requirements for D1 leagues (more on that later).
  2. MLS, not liking this move, will immediately remove all directly-owned affiliate clubs from the USL structure (this does not include hybrid ownerships, like San Antonio FC – NYCFC). This removes all MLS2 teams but will not affect Colorado Springs, Reno, RGVFC and San Antonio.
  3. The USL will attempt to maintain both the USL Championship and USL League One, with an eventual mind toward creating the pro/rel paradise that is promised in Relegations 3:16.
  4. All of my research regarding facility size and ownership net worth is correct – this is probably the biggest leap of faith we have to make, since googling “NAME net worth” and “CITY richest people” doesn’t seem guaranteed to return accurate results.
  5. The most a club can increase its available seating capacity to meet D1 requirements in a current stadium is no more than 1,500 seats (10% of the required 15,000). If they need to add more, they’ll need a new facility.
  6. Let’s pretend that people are VERY willing to sell. It’s commonly acknowledged that the USL is a more financially feasible route to owning a soccer club than in MLS (c.f. MLS-Charlotte’s reported $325 million expansion fee) and the USSF has some very strict requirements for D1 sanctioning. It becomes pretty apparent when googling a lot of team’s owners that this requirement isn’t met, so let’s assume everyone that can’t sells to people who meet the requirements.
(Known) USSF D1 league requirements:
- League must have 12 teams to apply and 14 teams by year three
- Majority owner must have a net worth of $40 million, and the ownership group must have a total net worth of $70 million. The value of an owned stadium is not considered when calculating this value.
- Must have teams located in the Eastern, Central and Pacific time zones
- 75% of league’s teams must be based in markets with at a metro population of at least 1 million people.
- All league stadiums must have a capacity of at least 15,000
The ideal club candidate for the USL Premiership will meet the population and capacity requirements in its current ground, which will have a grass playing surface. Of the USL Championship’s 27 independent/hybrid affiliate clubs, I did not find one club that meets all these criteria as they currently stand.
Regarding turf fields, the USSF does not have a formal policy regarding the ideal playing surface but it is generally acknowledged that grass is superior to turf. 6 of 26 MLS stadiums utilize turf, or roughly 23% of stadiums. We’ll hold a similar restriction for our top flight, so 2-3 of our top flight clubs can have turf fields. Seem fair?
Capacity is going to be the biggest issue, since the disparity between current requirements for the second-tier (5,000) and the first tier (15,000) is a pretty massive gap. Nice club you have there, triple your capacity and you’re onto something. As a result, I have taken the liberty of relocating certain (read: nearly all) clubs to new grounds, trying my utmost to keep those clubs in their current markets and –importantly--, ensure they play on grass surfaces.
So, let’s do a case-by-case evaluation and see if we can put together 12-14 teams that meet the potential requirements, because what else do you have to do?
For each club’s breakdown, anything that represents a chance from what is currently true will be underlined.
Candidate: Birmingham Legion FC
Location (Metro population): Birmingham, Ala. (1,151,801)
Time zone: Central
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Legion Field (FieldTurf, 71,594)
Potential owner: Stephens Family (reported net worth $4 billion)
Notes: Birmingham has a pretty strong candidacy. Having ditched the 5,000-seater BBVA Field for Legion Field, which sits 2.4 miles away, they’ve tapped into the city’s soccer history. Legion Field hosted portions of both the men’s and women’s tournaments at the 1996 Olympics, including a 3-1 U.S. loss to Argentina that saw 83,183 pack the house. The Harbert family seemed like strong ownership contenders, but since the death of matriarch Marguerite Harbert in 2015, it’s unclear where the wealth in the family is concentrated, so the Stephens seem like a better candidate. The only real knock that I can think of is that we really want to avoid having clubs play on turf, so I’d say they’re on the bubble of our platonic ideal USL Prem.
Candidate: Charleston Battery
Location (Metro population): Charleston, S.C. (713,000)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Johnson Hagood Stadium (Grass, ~14,700)
Potential owner: Anita Zucker (reported net worth $3 billion)
Notes: Charleston’s candidacy isn’t looking great. Already disadvantaged due to its undersized metro population, a move across the Cooper River to Johnson Hagood Stadium is cutting it close in terms of capacity. The stadium, home to The Citadel’s football team, used to seat 21,000, before 9,300 seats on the eastern grandstand were torn down in 2017 to deal with lead paint that had been used in their construction. Renovation plans include adding 3,000 seats back in, which could hit 15,000 if they bumped it to 3,300, but throw in a required sale by HCFC, LLC (led by content-creation platform founder Rob Salvatore) to chemical magnate Anita Zucker, and you’ll see there’s a lot of ifs and ands in this proposal.
Candidate: Charlotte Independence
Location (Metro population): Charlotte, N.C. (2,569, 213)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Jerry Richardson Stadium (Turf, 15,314)
Potential owner: James Goodnight (reported net worth $9.1 billion)
Notes: Charlotte ticks a lot of the boxes. A move from the Sportsplex at Matthews to UNC-Charlotte’s Jerry Richardson stadium meets capacity requirements, but puts them on to the dreaded turf. Regrettably, nearby American Legion Memorial Stadium only seats 10,500, despite a grass playing surface. With a sizeable metro population (sixth-largest in the USL Championship) and a possible owner in software billionaire James Goodnight, you’ve got some options here. The biggest problem likely lies in direct competition for market share against a much better-funded MLS Charlotte side due to join the league in 2021.
Candidate: Hartford Athletic
Location (Metro population): Hartford, Conn. (1,214,295)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Pratt & Whitney Stadium (Grass, 38,066)
Potential owner: Ray Dalio (reported net worth $18.4 billion)
Notes: Okay, I cheated a bit here, having to relocate Hartford to Pratt & Whitney Stadium, which is technically in East Hartford, Conn. I don’t know enough about the area to know if there’s some kind of massive beef between the two cities, but the club has history there, having played seven games in 2019 while Dillon Stadium underwent renovations. If the group of local businessmen that currently own the club manage to attract Dalio to the table, we’re on to something.
Candidate: Indy Eleven
Location (Metro population): Indianapolis, Ind. (2,048,703)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Lucas Oil Stadium (Turf, 62,421)
Potential owner: Jim Irsay (reported net worth of $3 billion)
Notes: Indy Eleven are a club that are SO CLOSE to being an ideal candidate – if it weren’t for Lucas Oil Stadium’s turf playing surface. Still, there’s a lot to like in this bid. I’m not going to lie, I have no idea what current owner and founder Ersal Ozdemir is worth, but it seems like there might be cause for concern. A sale to Irsay, who also owns the NFL Indianapolis (nee Baltimore) Colts, seems likely to keep the franchise there, rather than make a half-mile move to 14,230 capacity Victory Field where the AAA Indianapolis Indians play and expand from there.
Candidate: Louisville City FC
Location (Metro population): Louisville, Ky. (1,297,310)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Lynn Family Stadium (Grass, 14,000, possibly expandable to 20,000)
Potential owner: Wayne Hughes (reported net worth $2.8 billion)
Notes: I’m stretching things a bit here. Lynn Family stadium is currently listed as having 11,700 capacity that’s expandable to 14,000, but they’ve said that the ground could hold as many as 20,000 with additional construction, which might be enough to grant them a temporary waiver from USSF. If the stadium is a no-go, then there’s always Cardinal Stadium, home to the University of Louisville’s football team, which seats 65,000 but is turf. Either way, it seems like a sale to someone like Public Storage founder Wayne Hughes will be necessary to ensure the club has enough capital.
Candidate: Memphis 901 FC
Location (Metro population): Memphis, Tenn. (1,348,260)
Time zone: Central
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Liberty Bowl Stadium (Turf, 58,325)
Potential owner: Fred Smith (reported net worth $3 billion)
Notes: Unfortunately for Memphis, AutoZone Park’s 10,000 seats won’t cut it at the D1 level. With its urban location, it would likely prove tough to renovate, as well. Liberty Bowl Stadium more than meets the need, but will involve the use of the dreaded turf. As far as an owner goes, FedEx founder Fred Smith seems like a good local option.
Candidate: Miami FC, “The”
Location (Metro population): Miami, Fla. (6,158,824)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Riccardo Silva Stadium (FieldTurf, 20,000)
Potential owner: Riccardo Silva (reported net worth $1 billion)
Notes: Well, well, well, Silva might get his wish for top-flight soccer, after all. He’s got the money, he’s got the metro, and his ground has the capacity. There is the nagging issue of the turf, though. Hard Rock Stadium might present a solution, including a capacity of 64,767 and a grass playing surface. It is worth noting, however, that this is the first profile where I didn’t have to find a new potential owner for a club.
Candidate: North Carolina FC
Location (Metro population): Durham, N.C. (1,214,516 in The Triangle)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Carter-Finley Stadium (Grass/Turf, 57,583)
Potential owner: Steve Malik (precise net worth unknown) / Dennis Gillings (reported net worth of $1.7 billion)
Notes: We have our first “relocation” in North Carolina FC, who were forced to trade Cary’s 10,000-seat WakeMed Soccer Park for Carter-Finley Stadium in Durham, home of the NC State Wolfpack and 57,583 of their closest friends. The move is a whopping 3.1 miles, thanks to the close-knit hub that exists between Cary, Durham and Raleigh. Carter-Finley might be my favorite of the stadium moves in this exercise. The field is grass, but the sidelines are artificial turf. Weird, right? Either way, it was good enough for Juventus to play a friendly against Chivas de Guadalajara there in 2011. Maybe the move would be pushed for by new owner and medical magnate Dennis Gillings, whose British roots might inspire him to get involved in the Beautiful Game. Straight up, though, I couldn’t find a net worth for current owner Steve Malik, though he did sell his company MedFusion for $91 million in 2010, then bought it back for an undisclosed amount and sold it again for $43 million last November. I don’t know if Malik has the juice to meet D1 requirements, but I suspect he’s close.
Candidate: Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC
Location (Metro population): Pittsburgh, Penn. (2,362,453)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Heinz Field (Grass, 64,450)
Potential owner: Henry Hillman (reported net worth $2.5 billion)
Notes: I don’t know a ton about the Riverhounds, but this move in particular feels like depriving a pretty blue-collar club from its roots. Highmark Stadium is a no-go from a seating perspective, but the Steelers’ home stadium at Heinz Field would more than meet the requirements and have a grass surface that was large enough to be sanctioned for a FIFA friendly between the U.S. WNT and Costa Rica in 2015. As for an owner, Tuffy Shallenberger (first ballot owner name HOF) doesn’t seem to fit the USSF bill, but legendary Pittsburgh industrialist Henry Hillman might. I’m sure you’re asking, why not the Rooney Family, if they’ll play at Heinz Field? I’ll tell you: I honestly can’t seem to pin down a value for the family. The Steelers are valued at a little over a billion and rumors persist that Dan Rooney is worth $500 million, but I’m not sure. I guess the Rooneys would work too, but it’s a definite departure from an owner in Shallenberger who was described by one journalist as a guy who “wears boots, jeans, a sweater and a trucker hat.”
Candidate: Saint Louis FC
Location (Metro population): St. Louis, Mo. (2,807,338)
Time zone: Central
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Busch Stadium (Grass, 45,494)
Potential owner: William DeWitt Jr. (reported net worth $4 billion)
Notes: Saint Louis has some weirdness in making the jump to D1. Current CEO Jim Kavanaugh is an owner of the MLS side that will begin play in 2022. The club’s current ground at West Community Stadium isn’t big enough, but perhaps a timely sale to Cardinals owner William DeWitt Jr. could see the club playing games at Busch Stadium, which has a well established history of hosting other sports like hockey, college football and soccer (most recently a U.S. WNT friendly against New Zealand in 2019). The competition with another MLS franchise wouldn’t be ideal, like Charlotte, but with a big enough population and cross marketing from the Cardinals, maybe there’s a winner here. Wacko idea: If Busch doesn’t pan out, send them to The Dome. Sure, it’s a 60k turf closed-in stadium, but we can go for that retro NASL feel and pay homage to our nation’s soccer history.
Candidate: Tampa Bay Rowdies
Location (Metro population): Tampa, Fla. (3,068,511)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Raymond James Stadium (Grass, 65,518)
Potential owner: Edward DeBartolo Jr. (reported net worth $3 billion)
Notes: This one makes me sad. Despite having never been there, I see Al Lang Stadium as an iconic part of the Rowdies experience. Current owner Bill Edwards proposed an expansion to 18,000 seats in 2016, but the move seems to have stalled out. Frustrated with the city’s lack of action, Edwards sells to one-time San Francisco 49ers owner Edward DeBartolo Jr., who uses his old NFL connections to secure a cushy lease at the home of the Buccaneers in Ray Jay, the site of a 3-1 thrashing of Antigua and Barbuda during the United States’ 2014 World Cup Qualifying campaign.
Breather. Hey, we finished the Eastern Conference teams. Why are you still reading this? Why am I still writing it? Time is a meaningless construct in 2020 my friends, we are adrift in the void, fueled only by brief flashes of what once was and what may yet still be.
Candidate: Austin Bold FC
Location (Metro population): Austin, Texas (2,168,316)
Time zone: Central
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Darrel K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium (FieldTurf, 95,594)
Potential owner: Michael Dell (reported net worth of $32.3 billion)
Notes: Anthony Precourt’s Austin FC has some unexpected competition and it comes in the form of tech magnate Michael Dell. Dell, were he to buy the club, would be one of the richest owners on our list and could flash his cash in the new first division. Would he have enough to convince Darrel K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium (I’m not kidding, that’s its actual name) to go back to a grass surface, like it did from ’96-’08? That’s between Dell and nearly 100,000 UT football fans, but everything can be had for the right price.
Candidate: Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC
Location (Metro population): Colorado Springs, Colo. (738,939)
Time zone: Mountain
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Falcon Stadium (FieldTurf, 46,692)
Potential owner: Charles Ergen (reported net worth $10.8 billion)
Notes: Welcome to Colorado Springs. We have hurdles. For the first time in 12 candidates, we’re back below the desired 1 million metro population mark. Colorado Springs actually plans to build a $35 million, 8,000 seat venue downtown that will be perfect for soccer, but in our timeline that’s 7,000 seats short. Enter Falcon Stadium, home of the Air Force Academy Falcons football team. Seems perfect except for the turf, right? Well, the tricky thing is that Falcon Stadium is technically on an active military base and is (I believe) government property. Challenges to getting in and out of the ground aside, the military tends to have a pretty grim view of government property being used by for-profit enterprises. Maybe Charles Ergen, founder and chairman of Dish Network, would be able to grease the right wheels, but you can go ahead and throw this into the “doubtful” category. It’s a shame, too. 6,035 feet of elevation is one hell of a home-field advantage.
Candidate: El Paso Locomotive FC
Location: El Paso, Texas
Time zone: Mountain
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Sun Bowl (FieldTurf, 51,500)
Potential owner: Paul Foster (reported net worth $1.7 billion)
Notes: God bless Texas. When compiling this list, I found so many of the theoretical stadium replacements were nearly serviceable by high school football fields. That’s insane, right? Anyway, Locomotive don’t have to settle for one of those, they’ve got the Sun Bowl, which had its capacity reduced in 2001 to a paltry 51,500 (from 52,000) specifically to accommodate soccer. Sure, it’s a turf surface, but what does new owner Paul Foster (who is only the 1,477th wealthiest man in the world, per Forbes) care, he’s got a team in a top league. Side note: Did you know that the Sun Bowl college football game is officially, through sponsorship, the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl? Why is it not the Frosted Flakes Sun Bowl? Why is the cereal mascot the promotional name of the football game? What are you doing, Kellogg’s?
Candidate: Las Vegas Lights FC
Location: Las Vegas, Nev. (2,227,053)
Time zone: Pacific
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Allegiant Stadium (Grass, 61,000)
Potential owner: Sheldon Adelson (reported net worth $37.7 billion)
Notes: Sin City. You had to know that the club that once signed Freddy Adu because “why not” was going to go all out in our flashy hypothetical proposal. Thanks to my narrative control of this whole thing, they have. Adelson is the second-richest owner in the league and has decided to do everything first class. That includes using the new Raiders stadium in nearby unincorporated Paradise, Nevada, and spending boatloads on high profile transfers. Zlatan is coming back to the U.S., confirmed.
Candidate: New Mexico United
Location: Albuquerque, N.M.
Time zone: Mountain
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Isotopes Park – officially Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park (Grass, 13,500 – 15,000 with expansion)
Potential owner: Maloof Family (reported net worth $1 billion)
Notes: New Mexico from its inception went deep on the community vibe, and I’ve tried to replicate that in this bid. The home field of Rio Grande Cr---I’m not typing out the whole thing—Isotopes Park falls just within the expansion rules we set to make it to 15,000 (weird, right?) and they’ve found a great local ownership group in the Lebanese-American Maloof (formerly Maalouf) family from Las Vegas. The only thing to worry about would be the metro population, but overall, this could be one of the gems of USL Prem.
Candidate: Oklahoma City Energy FC
Location: Oklahoma City, Okla. (1,396,445)
Time zone: Central
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark (Grass, 13,066)
Potential owner: Harold Hamm (reported net worth $14.2 billion)
Notes: There’s a bright golden haze on the meadow and it says it’s time to change stadiums and owners to make it to D1. A sale to oil magnate Harold Hamm would give the club the finances it needs, but Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark (home of the OKC Dodgers) actually falls outside of the boundary of what would meet capacity if 1,500 seats were added. Could the club pull off a move to Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Oklahoma – home of the Oklahoma Sooners? Maybe, but at 20 miles, this would be a reach.
Candidate: Orange County SC
Location: Irvine, Calif. (3,176, 000 in Orange County)
Time zone: Pacific
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Angels Stadium of Anaheim (Grass, 43,250)
Potential owner: Arte Moreno (reported net worth $3.3 billion)
Notes: You’ll never convince me that Rangers didn’t choose to partner with Orange County based primarily on its name. Either way, a sale to MLB Angels owner Arte Moreno produces a fruitful partnership, with the owner choosing to play his newest club out of the existing Angels stadium in OC. Another baseball conversion, sure, but with a metro population of over 3 million and the closest thing this hypothetical league has to an LA market, who’s complaining?
Candidate: Phoenix Rising FC
Location: Phoenix, Ariz. (4,857,962)
Time zone: Arizona
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): State Farm Stadium (Grass, 63,400)
Potential owner: Ernest Garcia II (reported net worth $5.7 billion)
Notes: We’re keeping it local with new owner and used car guru Ernest Garcia II. His dad owned a liquor store and he dropped out of college, which is making me feel amazing about my life choices right now. Casino Arizona Field is great, but State Farm Stadium is a grass surface that hosted the 2019 Gold Cup semifinal, so it’s a clear winner. Throw in Phoenix’s massive metro population and this one looks like a lock.
Candidate: Reno 1868 FC
Location: Reno, Nev. (425,417)
Time zone: Pacific
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Mackay Stadium (FieldTurf, 30,000)
Potential owner: Nancy Walton Laurie (reported net worth $7.1 billion)
Notes: The Biggest Little City on Earth has some serious barriers to overcome, thanks to its low metro population. A sale to Walmart heiress Nancy Walton Laurie and 1.6 mile-move to Mackay Stadium to split space with the University of Nevada, Reno makes this bid competitive, but the turf surface is another knock against it.
Candidate: Rio Grande Valley FC
Location: Edinburg, Texas (900,304)
Time zone: Central
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): McAllen Memorial Stadium (FieldTurf, 13,500 – 15,000 with expansion)
Potential owner: Alice Louise Walton (reported net worth $45 billion)
Notes: Yes, I have a second straight Walmart heiress on the list. She was the first thing that popped up when I googled “McAllen Texas richest people.” The family rivalry has spurred Walton to buy a club as well, moving them 10 miles to McAllen Memorial Stadium which, as I alluded to earlier, is a straight up high school football stadium with a full color scoreboard. Toss in an additional 1,500 seats and you’ve met the minimum, despite the turf playing surface.
Candidate: San Antonio FC
Location: San Antonio, Texas (2,550,960)
Time zone: Central
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Alamodome (FieldTurf, 64,000)
Potential owner: Red McCombs (reported net worth $1.6 billion)
Notes: I wanted to keep SAFC in the Spurs family, since the franchise is valued at $1.8 billion. That said, I didn’t let the Rooneys own the Riverhounds based on the Steelers’ value and it felt wrong to change the rules, so bring on Clear Channel co-founder Red McCombs. Toyota Field isn’t viable in the first division, but for the Alamodome, which was built in 1993 in hopes of attracting an NFL franchise (and never did), San Antonio can finally claim having *a* national football league team in its town (contingent on your definition of football). Now if only we could do something about that turf…
Candidate: San Diego Loyal SC
Location: San Diego, Calif. (3,317,749)
Time zone: Pacific
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): SDCCU Stadium (formerly Qualcomm) (Grass, 70,561)
Potential owner: Phil Mickelson (reported net worth $91 million)
Notes: Yes, golf’s Phil Mickelson. The existing ownership group didn’t seem to have the wherewithal to meet requirements, and Phil seemed to slot right in. As an athlete himself, he might be interesting in the new challenges of a top flight soccer team. Toss in a move to the former home of the chargers and you might have a basis for tremendous community support.
Candidate: FC Tulsa
Location: Tulsa, Okla. (991,561)
Time zone: Central
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium (FieldTurf, 30,000)
Potential owner: George Kaiser ($10 billion)
Notes: I’m a fan of FC Tulsa’s rebrand, but if they want to make the first division, more changes are necessary. A sale to Tulsa native and one of the 100 richest men in the world George Kaiser means that funding is guaranteed. A move to Chapman Stadium would provide the necessary seats, despite the turf field. While the undersize population might be an issue at first glance, it’s hard to imagine U.S. Soccer not granting a waiver over a less than a 10k miss from the mark.
And that’s it! You made it. Those are all of the independent/hybrid affiliates in the USL Championship, which means that it’s time for our…
VERDICT: As an expert who has studied this issue for almost an entire day now, I am prepared to pronounce which USL Championships could be most ‘ready” for a jump to the USL Prem. A reminder that of the 27 clubs surveyed, 0 of them met our ideal criteria (proper ownership $, metro population, 15,000+ stadium with grass field).
Two of them, however, met almost all of those criteria: Indy Eleven and Miami FC. Those two clubs may use up two of our three available turf fields right from the outset, but the other factors they hit (particularly Silva’s ownership of Miami) makes them difficult, if not impossible to ignore for the top flight.
But who fill in the rest of the slots? Meet the entire 14-team USL Premier League:
Hartford Athletic
Indy Eleven
Louisville City FC
Miami FC
North Carolina FC
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC
Tampa Bay Rowdies
Saint Louis FC
San Antonio FC
New Mexico United
Phoenix Rising FC
Las Vegas Lights FC
Orange County SC
San Diego Loyal SC
Now, I shall provide my expert rationale for each club’s inclusion/exclusion, which can be roughly broken down into four categories.
Firm “yes”
Hartford Athletic: It’s a good market size with a solid stadium. With a decent investor and good community support, you’ve got potential here.
Indy Eleven: The turf at Lucas Oil Stadium is no reason to turn down a 62,421 venue and a metro population of over 2 million.
Louisville City FC: Why doesn’t the 2017 & 2018 USL Cup champion deserve a crack at the top flight? They have the market size, and with a bit of expansion have the stadium at their own SSS. LCFC, you’re in.
Miami FC, “The”: Our other blue-chip recruit on the basis of ownership value, market size and stadium capacity. Yes, that field is turf, but how could you snub Silva’s chance to claim victory as the first division 1 club soccer team to play in Miami?
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC: Pittsburgh sacrificed a lot to be here (according to my arbitrary calculations). Their market size and the potential boon of soccer at Heinz Field is an important inclusion to the league.
Saint Louis FC: Willie hears your “Busch League” jokes, Willie don’t care. A huge market size, combined with the absence of an NFL franchise creates opportunity. Competition with the MLS side, sure, but St. Louis has serious soccer history and we’re willing to bet it can support two clubs.
Tampa Bay Rowdies: With a huge population and a massive stadium waiting nearby, Tampa Bay seems like too good of an opportunity to pass up for the USL Prem.
Las Vegas Lights FC: Ostentatious, massive and well-financed, Las Vegas Lights FC is everything that the USL Premier League would need to assert that it didn’t intend to play second fiddle to MLS. Players will need to be kept on a short leash, but this is a hard market to pass up on.
Phoenix Rising FC: Huge population, big grass field available nearby and a solid history of success in recent years. No brainer.
San Diego Loyal SC: New club? Yes, massive population in a market that recently lost an absolutely huge sports presence? Also yes. This could be the USL Prem’s Seattle.
Cautious “yes”
New Mexico United: You have to take a chance on New Mexico United. The club set the league on fire with its social media presence and its weight in the community when it entered the league last season. The market may be slightly under USSF’s desired 1 million, but fervent support (and the ability to continue to use Isotopes Park) shouldn’t be discounted.
North Carolina FC: Carter-Finley’s mixed grass/turf surface is a barrier, to be sure, but the 57,000+ seats it offers (and being enough to offset other fully-turf offerings) is enough to put it in the black.
Orange County SC: It’s a top-tier club playing in a MLB stadium. I know it seems unlikely that USSF would approve something like that, but believe me when I say “it could happen.” Orange County is a massive market and California likely needs two clubs in the top flight.
San Antonio FC: Our third and only voluntary inclusion to the turf fields in the first division, we’re counting on San Antonio’s size and massive potential stadium to see it through.
Cautious “no”
Birmingham Legion FC: The town has solid soccer history and a huge potential venue, but the turf playing surface puts it on the outside looking in.
Memphis 901 FC: Like Birmingham, not much to dislike here outside of the turf playing surface at the larger playing venue.
Austin Bold FC: See the other two above.
FC Tulsa: Everything’s just a little bit off with this one. Market’s slightly too small, stadium has turf. Just not enough to put it over the top.
Firm “no”
Charleston Battery: Small metro and a small potential new stadium? It’s tough to say yes to the risk.
Charlotte Independence: A small new stadium and the possibility of having to compete with an organization that just paid over $300 million to join MLS means it’s best for this club to remain in the USL Championship.
Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC: When a club’s best chance to meet a capacity requirement is to host games at a venue controlled by the military, that doesn’t speak well to a club’s chances.
El Paso Locomotive FC: An undersized market and a turf field that meets capacity requirements is the death knell for this one.
Oklahoma City Energy FC: Having to expand a baseball field to meet requirements is a bad start. Having to potentially play 20 miles away from your main market is even worse.
Reno 1868 FC: Population nearly a half-million short of the federation’s requirements AND a turf field at the hypothetical new stadium makes impossible to say yes to this bid.
Rio Grande Valley FC: All the seat expansions in the world can’t hide the fact that McAllen Memorial Stadium is a high school stadium through and through.
Here’s who’s left in the 11-team Championship:
Birmingham Legion FC
Charleston Battery
Charlotte Independence
Memphis 901 FC
Austin Bold FC
Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC
El Paso Locomotive FC
Oklahoma City Energy FC
Reno 1868 FC
Rio Grande Valley FC
FC Tulsa
With MLS folding the six affiliates it has in USL League One, the league is a little bit thin (especially considering USSF’s requirements for 8 teams for lower level leagues), but seems definitely able to expand up to the necessary numbers with Edwards’ allusions to five new additions this year:
Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
Forward Madison FC
Greenville Triumph SC
Union Omaha
Richmond Kickers
South Georgia Tormenta
FC Tucson
Format of Assorted Leagues – This (like everything in this post) is pure conjecture on my part, but here are my thoughts on how these leagues might function in a first year while waiting for additional expansion.
USL Premier – We’ll steal from the 12-team Scottish Premiership. Each club plays the other 11 clubs 3 times, with either one or two home matches against each side. When each club has played 33 matches, the top six and bottom six separate, with every club playing an additional five matches (against each other team in its group). The top club wins the league. The bottom club is automatically relegated. The second-bottom club will enter a two-legged playoff against someone (see below) from the championship playoffs.
USL Championship -- 11 clubs is a challenge to schedule for. How about every club plays everyone else three times (either one or two home matches against each side)? Top four clubs make the playoffs, which are decided by two-legged playoffs. The winner automatically goes up. I need feedback on the second part – is it better to have the runner-up from the playoffs face the second-bottom club from the Premiership, or should the winner of the third-place match-up get the chance to face them to keep drama going in both playoff series? As for relegation, we can clearly only send down the last place club while the third division is so small.
USL League One – While the league is so small, it doesn’t seem reasonable to have the clubs play as many matches as the higher divisions. Each club could play the other six clubs four times – twice at home and twice away – for a very equitable 24-match regular season, which would help restrict costs and still provide a chance to determine a clear winner. Whoever finishes top of the table goes up.
And there you have it, a hypothetical look at how the USL could build a D1 league right now. All it would take is a new stadium for almost the entire league and new owners for all but one of the 27 clubs, who wouldn’t feel that their property would be massively devalued if they got relegated.
Well that’s our show. I’m curious to see what you think of all of this, especially anything that you think I may have overlooked (I’m sure there’s plenty). Anyway, I hope you’re all staying safe and well.

June 7 COVID-19 pandemic: The global death toll from COVID-19 exceeds 400,000.
June 8 In Seattle, wannabe anarchists attempt to steal BLM movement with Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone. COVID-19 pandemic: The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 passes 7 million worldwide
June 9 George is finally laid to rest, RIP.
June 11 NASCAR bans Stars and Bars 150 years after those traitorous assholes lost. I guess better late than never. But 150 fucking years! Oh yeah and some jackass named Ray Ciccarelli quits because of it. Ugh, it never ends does it?
June 12 Ok at this point 2020, can you please just give me a week where nothing happens that signals The End is near? How about a rainbow, you got any of those anymore?

Toyota is facing an Olympic-size nail-biter

https://www.autonews.com/marketing/toyota-facing-olympic-size-nail-biter - Paywall
TOKYO — For Japan's biggest automaker, the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics has been a five-year, about $1 billion bet on showcasing the company and its technology to the world.
But speculation is mounting here that the games will be postponed, or even canceled, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. If so, Toyota Motor Corp. might be out a bundle.
For starters, Toyota spent a reported $835 million in 2015 to sign on as a top sponsor of the games through 2024.
Since then, it has put untold millions into developing a fleet of electrified, new-mobility vehicles to roll out for the event — from hydrogen fuel cell buses to automated athlete shuttles and a cast of robots to help at events. A self-driving Toyota pod car is supposed to escort the torch relay.
Toyota also created a sophisticated worldwide marketing campaign called "Start Your Impossible" that revolves around the Olympics and the idea of delivering new modes of mobility to all people. It even spent years developing a new, more user-friendly taxi, the JPN Taxi, to transport the expected droves of international visitors flocking to the country for the world's biggest sporting event.
But now, maybe no one will come.
The International Olympic Committee, the Japanese government and Toyota are still publicly committed to lighting the flame in Tokyo's Olympic Stadium on July 24.
"With more than four months to go before the games, there is no need for any drastic decisions at this stage," the IOC said last week. Speculating about its fate, the committee said, is "counterproductive."
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also has been bullish on going ahead as scheduled. But that changed.
Last week, he opened some wiggle room for rescheduling the Olympics. Dodging questions on whether they should open as planned, Abe instead told reporters that the games should be held in their "complete form," and that he has the backing of other Group of Seven leaders. Japan's Olympic minister later did hasty damage control to clarify that Japan still wants stay to on track.
For its part, Toyota issued a statement saying it hasn't heard of any change in plans from the Olympic organizers, and thus, there is "no change of plans for Toyota as well."
But global skepticism and concern are spreading as the coronavirus reaches new frontiers. The head of the French Olympic Committee told Reuters the global pandemic must be on the wane by the end of May to green-light the Summer Games.
But President Donald Trump, meanwhile, has said the crisis in the U.S. could drag into August.
At the same time, Japan's Kyodo news agency reported that Canada's athletes' commission representative to the IOC called the committee "insensitive and irresponsible" for pushing ahead with the Summer Olympics. And a study of data from the Japan health ministry by Kyodo showed that the outbreak in Japan has not reached its peak yet.
A poll by the country's Asahi newspaper found that 63 percent of Japanese voters think the Summer Olympics should be postponed.
Athlete, logistics issues
The IOC conceded that many athletes around the world will face difficulties securing their qualification for the games because of the social-distancing policies adopted to stem the spread of the coronavirus.
"Athletes are even finding it hard to continue their regular training schedules," the IOC said, noting that so far, only 57 percent of the athletes are qualified.
Calling off the games would be a huge hit to the Japanese economy and the government, which has positioned the games as a national pride project and economic stimulus. Tokyo, in particular, has been on a yearslong building boom to prepare for the Olympics.
But postponing them would also be a costly logistical nightmare.
Toyota meticulously timed product placement and unveilings for a slew of vehicles and new-mobility gadgets to the Olympics spotlight. The strategizing includes this year's launch of the second-generation Mirai, the svelte and sexy upgrade to Toyota's trademark fuel cell sedan.
Also in the works is the LQ, a self-driving electric vehicle equipped with a digital assistant designed to deliver a "personalized mobility experience." That car builds on the Concept-I exhibited in 2017 at CES in Las Vegas. Toyota planned to have a working version of the LQ ready for public test drives from June to September. And it previously said the vehicle will run as an escort vehicle for some events during the Olympics.
The question is whether these vehicles and others Toyota has on tap will still carry a "wow" punch if the Olympics are delayed to 2021 or later. And the ramifications reverberate far beyond Toyota. In the event of a delay or cancellation, any automaker that bought airtime during the Olympics would have to rethink that advertising pitch and its timing.
Impact in Japan
Japan has acted inconsistently to contain the coronavirus.
The government canceled all schools throughout the month of March, for instance. Many companies have instituted teleworking policies, and public spaces are quieter and more subdued than normal.
But bars, restaurants and stores are still open, and there are no drastic shelter-in-place orders yet.
Japan reported last week that 1,728 people had tested positive for coronavirus, including 712 from the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined at the port in Yokohama, and 14 others evacuated from China by government charter flights, according to a tally by Kyodo.
The death toll in Japan stood at 29 people.
But as of last week, only 12,239 people in the country had been tested in this nation of 126 million, leading some to question whether the limited testing captures the true scope of transmission here.

  • WWF's Summerslam is in the books and it was a fantastic show that raised the bar with crazy stunts. There was the show-stealing TLC match between Edge & Christian/Hardyz/Dudleyz that was full of insane bumps (remember, this is the first ever TLC match). Shane McMahon also took a crazy bump off the TitanTron (and Steve Blackman followed with an elbow drop). Dave worries about all the backyard wrestler type kids trying to copy all this dangerous stuff, because it's a given that it will happen. But backyard wrestlers don't have crash pads, doctors on site, and other safety precautions the way WWF does. Obviously, you can't legislate stupidity, but WWF is the industry leader and when someone dies jumping off a ladder from their roof through a table, people are going to point the finger of blame at them and use things like this show as an example. Dave just feels like the bar on crazy stunts is beginning to be raised too high. Anyway, the show was sold out and because of higher ticket prices, it was the 7th highest gate in the history of American pro wrestling and the first time they've done a gate of over $1 million for something other than Wrestlemania. The show was main evented by a Rock/Triple H/Kurt Angle three-way match that saw Angle get legitimately knocked loopy early in the match on a table bump when the announce table broke before it was supposed to. After the match, Angle couldn't remember anything that happened after the botched spot and he was taken to the hospital and kept overnight for observation. (Yeah, if you've never seen this, Angle is MASSIVELY concussed. He's so clearly out of it. Angle later said that when Stephanie came out for the end of the match, and they were outside the ring, Stephanie kept having to lead him through spots. "Throw him against the stairs. Okay now grab his leg. Okay, now do this..." He was absolutely GONE. Knowing what we know now about concussions, it's scary to watch.)
WATCH: The Rock vs. Triple H vs. Kurt Angle - Summerslam 2000
  • Other notes from Summerslam: there was an ad during the show for a place called Vinnie's Restaurant in Raleigh, NC where the show was. That restaurant was actually started by one of Vince McMahon's close childhood friends and is actually named in honor of Vince (he helped originally finance the place), so that's why that was plugged during the show (the place still exists, but Vince's friend sold it to new owners way back in 2002). Chyna won the IC title by pinning Trish Stratus. Don't ask. Jericho/Benoit in a 2-out-of-3 falls match was good but rushed and was missing something. Dave predicts the TLC match will get a lot of votes for match of the year. Kat vs. Terri in a stink face match was what you'd expect, but Dave notes that Al Snow managed to grab a handful of both women's asses at points during the match. Undertaker vs. Kane never really got going and that whole storyline was thrown together at the last minute anyway after Big Show got pulled from the card. And Rock retained the WWF title in a match that was built around the Triple H/Angle/Stephanie love triangle. Fortunately, the match was already booked to have Angle disappear for a large part of it after the table bump, which is fortunate since he really did need that extra 15 minutes or so to halfway recover after being knocked loopy. When Angle was being carted out on the stretcher, Triple H went after him and was supposed to tip over the stretcher and beat Angle up some more. But by that point, they all kinda realized that Angle was seriously hurt so Triple H improvised and didn't really do anything to him other than hit him with a few worked punches while he waited for Rock to come interrupt and then they took Angle backstage.
  • The latest PRIDE event is in the book and it featured Ken Shamrock losing his fight and Kazushi Sakuraba defeating Renzo Gracie, which is the 3rd Gracie family member in a row to lose to Sakuraba (he'll end up adding a 4th, Ryan, to that list in a few months). Shamrock's loss came at the hands of NJPW wrestler Kazuyuki Fujita. Shamrock was dominating the fight but his corner threw the towel in after about 6+ minutes when Shamrock seemed to start suffering heart attack symptoms and went pale. He ended up being okay after the fight and refused to talk about it with the press. It was said to be incredibly hot in the arena, over 100 degrees and probably even hotter under the lights and fighting. In the other big fight, Renzo Gracie suffered a dislocated elbow when he refused to tap out to Sakuraba and the referee stopped it. It was a close fight and Renzo is widely considered the best of the Gracie family, and he was gracious in defeat, which the other Gracies have not been. There was a bunch of wrestlers working the show and a seemingly worked wrestling-style angle to set up a future Naoya Ogawa/Masaaki Satake fight. Speaking of, Satake's victory over Kazunari Mirakami came across as suspicious to some and considering Antonio Inoki was one of the producers of the show and Satake's win set up the Ogawa angle, there was some suspicion that this fight may have been worked.
  • ECW put on 2 shows at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC this week and many were calling it the greatest weekend in the history of ECW with 2 of the best shows the company has ever put on. The events even got front page coverage on the next day's NY Daily News. The two shows consisted of 5 hours of TV tapings, which will be the final shows for ECW on TNN, and it ended with Cyrus "cancelling" ECW on TNN. At the first show, Mikey Whipwreck and Tajiri won the tournament to crown new tag champions but lost them at the next show. Kid Kash became TV champion. Dawn Marie returned as Steve Corino's manager (who also came out with Smashing Pumpkins singer Billy Corgan, and he got involved as well). But it wasn't all good. Psicosis faced Tony DeVito in a match that was such a styles clash and so bad that it reportedly won't make television. But several other matches were great. It ended with Cyrus cancelling ECW, which brought out Paul Heyman and he laid out Cyrus, only to have Rhino put Heyman through a table and a huge brawl broke out (yeah this whole angle is great and the crowd is nuclear).
WATCH: Cyrus cancels ECW on TNN
  • Regarding the actual, real cancellation of ECW, there's a lot of hope that they will end up on USA and there's still a lot of talk about it being a 2-hour show on Saturday nights, although nothing has been finalized yet. The plan for a new 2-hour show would be for it to have a heavy focus on good in-ring matches (I love how Heyman was already beginning to toy with the idea of changing ECW into the type of promotion that ROH would later become. Paul Heyman seems to always be a few years ahead of the curve on where wrestling is going). USA is still appealing the Raw decision so that's one of the major hold-ups to them striking a deal with ECW.
  • Must be a slow week because, with the 2000 Summer Olympics approaching, Dave decides to take a look at some of the Olympic athletes who have transitioned into pro wrestling or MMA or vice versa. I feel like we just did this a few months ago but this is waaaaaaaaay more in-depth, dating back to 1906. Man, I'm sure this is interesting to read, but fuck that. It's lunch time for me anyway. I think I'm going to go to Subway. I'll let y'all know how it goes when I get back.
  • I'm back. Lunch was fine. Got the foot long spicy Italian with lettuce, cucumbers, banana peppers, salt & pepper and sweet onion sauce. My sandwich artist put just a little too much sauce on there, but it was fine. I sat in my car and tried to read a book while I ate, but my wife kept texting me. Like, c'mon, of course I want to order pizza tonight. Are we going to have this conversation every time? Why would I want salad? Plants and carrots and shit? Am I a bunny? DO I LOOK LIKE A BUNNY TO YOU, SAMANTHA? HUH, DO I? REAL PEOPLE DON'T EAT FOLIAGE! And by this point, my wife was crying and was like "Stop yelling! What do you want from me?!" And I said, "I want about tree fiddy." Now it was around this time that she realized that I wasn't really her husband. I was 7 stories tall and was actually a crustacean from the Paleozoic era. "Dammit Nessie!" she exclaimed. That goddamn Loch Ness monster had gotten her again. "Dammit Monstah, I ain't givin' you no tree fiddy!" she yelled at me as I swam away.
  • Dave talks about the death of Andy Hug, a kickboxer in Japan who died suddenly from acute leukemia, to the shock of the entire country and Switzerland where he was a national hero. His funeral in Tokyo attracted over 12,000 people making it one of the biggest funerals ever for a professional athlete in Japan (second only to Giant Baba's funeral in 1999). Hug wasn't just a kickboxer, he was a mainstream celebrity in Japan, appearing in lots of TV commercials and was often courted for movie roles which he turned down to focus on fighting. His death was a total surprise, even to him, as he was admitted to the hospital only 6 days earlier because he felt like something was wrong. Then a few days later, he put out a statement saying he was in the fight for his life and vowing to return. Then 24 hours later, he went into a coma, was put on life support and never woke up.
  • Speaking of, following Hug's death, NJPW star Shinya Hashimoto announced that he's coming back, and they tied it into Hug's death, with Hashimoto saying that about the moment Hug died is when he decided he needed to return and he went to the dojo where Hug used to train to talk about why he was inspired to come back and whatnot. Dave thinks turning Hug's death into an angle for Hashimoto's return is pretty tasteless.
  • Raw was moved back 2 hours due to the U.S. Open tennis tournament this week and so it aired from 11pm-1am EST. And it still did an incredible 4.93 rating, which is bonkers for that late of a time slot. It also still destroyed Nitro, which aired unopposed in its normal time slot and still couldn't come close to touching Raw. As for this week's Thunder, it did a near record low 1.89 rating which is the 2nd lowest in the history of the show, although to be fair, it was going head-to-head against the finale of Survivor which did the highest rating of any show on television this year aside from the Super Bowl. So the good news is, there's a valid excuse for the low rating. It was a terrible show, but at least nobody saw it, so that's also good news in its own way.
  • Atsushi Onita appeared at the latest AJPW show in an angle and had an exchange in the ring with Motoko Baba and Masa Fuchi. It's all leading to Onita's return to AJPW, because they're still desperately trying to bring in anyone that will keep them from collapsing.
  • Fox News ran a segment on backyard wrestling focusing on a kid in Chicago who broke his neck after taking a tombstone wrong. The kid's mom was on the show and so was Mick Foley, telling kids that sending the WWF a tape of you doing backyard wrestling isn't going to even get you looked at, much less signed. Dave says that's all well and good, but the reality is, half the people in WWF probably started out wrestling with their friends in their backyards. Foley's history is well known, jumping off his roof and shit. The Hardyz, Shane Helms, Shannon Moore and that whole group trained themselves in a ring they bought when they were teenagers in their yard. And Dave is willing to bet that the vast majority of guys who get into the business in the next decade or so will probably have started that way also. It's not safe and kids definitely need to be careful and stop doing this shit, but the reality is, they won't. They're kids. It's the same as NBA players who grow up playing basketball in their driveway or NFL players started out playing football with no helmets or pads in their backyard with their friends. That's just the nature of sports and wrestling isn't all that different.
  • Tajiri had to return to Japan for the next month for legal issues regarding his visa. ECW is hoping to have all the visa stuff worked out so that both Tajiri and Super Crazy can return for the Oct. PPV.
  • Speaking of PPVs, ECW really loves the Hammerstein Ballroom and everyone in the company feels like it's the perfect building for ECW. It's likely they will hold a PPV there soon (the final 2 PPVs in ECW history take place there as well as the first 2 PPVs of the new WWECW a few years later).
  • Neither ECW or XPW have filed lawsuits against each other over the incident that took place at the Heat Wave PPV, so that seems to be mostly a dead issue right now (yeah, it never went past this. XPW kept talking shit for awhile, but that was the end of the "feud". ECW was too busy trying not to die).
  • Notes from Nitro: they held the show in a smaller arena that only holds 5,000 so it was actually close to full (still not sold out) but it made for a much better atmosphere than all the 3/4 empty arenas WCW has been performing in. He calls Tygress vs. Paisley vs. Major Gunns "the worst 20 seconds in the history of sports entertainment." Mike Awesome is now doing a retro 70s gimmick just in case he wasn't dead enough in this company. Nash cut a promo saying he was going to "eat a little Korean," which was apparently a reference to Nitro Girl Chae, who he is dating. Konnan returned to action, way sooner than he should have after his recent tricep surgery. Dave talks about how WCW cuts people's paychecks in half if they're out injured too long and how it just leads to worse injuries because people are returning before they're ready and get injured again. Dave knows that some guys in the company have a habit of milking injuries so they can stay home and collect a check, but Konnan had a very real surgery and they know that. So anyway, he's back. They did a big thing with Russo threatening to fire Goldberg, completely forgetting the fact that just 2 weeks ago on Nitro, the big storyline was about how Russo couldn't fire Goldberg because of some clause in his contract. But hey, who cares about plot holes? They had an angle where ICP and Vampiro destroyed the big screen over the entrance way. For a company that is frantically cutting costs everywhere, Dave questions the logic in destroying an expensive piece of the set for an angle no one cares about. Bret Hart came back and blamed the Montreal Screwjob on Russo, because we're still booking angles about that 3 years later. Hart then attacked Goldberg in a good angle, blaming him for ending his career. Dave thinks it was a great angle but the problem is it makes people want to see Goldberg vs. Bret Hart and, well, that's clearly not happening, so again.....why?
  • Johnny Ace is said to be impressing people backstage in WCW with booking and production meetings. Oh, speaking of, Ace and Kevin Nash got into a heated argument backstage at Nitro. A lot of wrestlers have been fined in the last few weeks for being late and its believed the fines were Ace's idea. So Nash confronted him about it and it turned into such a heated argument that it almost got physical.
  • Scott Steiner suffered an orbital bone injury during the brawl on Nitro last week when Goldberg accidentally potatoed him.
  • Jeff Jarrett said in an interview that he would have stayed in WWF if the offer was right and said that Russo going to WCW didn't play a big part in his decision. But he said he felt the WWF's offer made by Jim Ross was insulting. He also said that he was pissed at Steve Austin because he took stunners from Austin several times on TV but when it was time for Austin to work an angle with Jarrett, he refused.
  • Dave explains the story of Jacques Rougeau quitting WCW recently and it's just a big bunch of mess about Rougeau wanting to be a bigger part of the Team Canada angle with Lance Storm and Bret Hart, but he was only offered a per-night deal and then Russo tried to book him to job to The Cat. Rougeau felt WCW only saw him as a jobber and he wants to be more than that, so he quit.
  • They revealed the names for the 8 XFL teams at a press conference, and Dave uses this opportunity to point out the obvious wrestling connections. The NY/NJ Hitmen (Bret), Orlando Rage, Memphis Maniax, San Jose Demons ("my god, they named a team after Dale Torborg!"), Los Angeles Extreme (ECW), Las Vegas Outlaws ("oh you didn't know?"), Chicago Enforcers (Double A), and Birmingham Thunderbolts (Thunderbolt Patterson). Fun fact: the Birmingham team was originally going to be called The Blast but when rumors of the name leaked out, some people in Birmingham thought it might be seen as a reference to the infamous 1963 Birmingham church bombing and were advised against it. As for the Hitmen team, the Calgary Flames franchise in Canada owns a minor league hockey team called the Calgary Hitmen (and in fact, Bret Hart was once a partial owner of the team) and they're said to be exploring their legal options against the XFL, arguing that they have a trademark for the Hitmen name. Dave thinks the team logos are all pretty cool, but WWF excels at marketing, so he's not surprised.
PHOTO: Original 8 XFL team logos
  • Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler had a tryout to be XFL announcers and apparently did very well, but it's unknown if they'll get the gig. NBC is said to be uncomfortable with having them do the announcing since they want to at least kinda separate this whole thing from wrestling because the connection automatically makes people suspicious of the games. Dave says with NBC being 50% owner, there's no chance the games will be worked because NBC won't allow that type of scandal, but people will be suspicious anyway.
  • Raven's ECW contract has expired and he has signed a deal with WWF, so that's finally official. No word on when he'll debut.
  • Jim Ross sent a memo out to all the wrestlers and reassured everyone that WWF has had no meetings with any WCW wrestlers. He said the company is happy with the locker room they have, with little drama and everyone is cohesive and working together and they don't want to do anything to damage that morale, such as bringing in all the locker room cancers from WCW. That being said, both Steve Austin and Triple H have expressed interest in wanting to work with DDP, but unless he gets a release, WWF won't even talk to him.
  • The current plan for the next few weeks is to heavily hype the return of Steve Austin to TV on the first episode of Raw on TNN. He may also get involved at this month's Unforgiven PPV now that he's physically able to deliver stunners. WWF has set up a ring at Austin's home in Texas and are sending wrestlers down there to work with him and get him back into ring shape. The October PPV is expected to be his first match back.
FRIDAY: Eric Bischoff interested in buying WCW, the NJPW vs. AJPW interpromotional feud begins, WWF vs. WCW lawsuit settled, Kurt Angle gets concussed again, and more...

Compilation of Kobe Bryant Stories

Here a list of some Kobe stories I found throughout the internet. Feel free to share any I did not include.
Kobe Bryant and the 40-mile bike ride
Interesting tidbit from an article on the Clippers’ Blake Griffin, by ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne:
Blake Griffin needs to know if the story is true. Ever since he first heard it last July, he’s been obsessed with it.
"The first night we all got into Las Vegas last summer for the USA Basketball camp, I heard Kobe went on some 40-mile bike ride at night through the desert," Griffin says. "Forty miles? At night? You think it’s true?"
Before I can answer, Griffin continues:
"When I found out about that bike ride, I was so tempted to ask him if I could go next time."
This is my favorite part about Kobe: you assume this story is true. Forty miles in the desert? You don’t even question it.
…in this moment, all Griffin wants to talk about is whether or not Kobe Bryant really got on a bike and rode 40 miles through the desert last July.
"I love that stuff," Griffin says. "I love all those stories."
The story Griffin heard turns out to be true. And it goes something like this: Bryant told his longtime trainer, Tim Grover, that he wanted to add in bike training to his summer conditioning. Grover researched a trail in Las Vegas, rented three bikes — one for Bryant, one for himself and one for Bryant’s security guard — and on the night before the first day of practice, they each put on headlamps and headed out to the trail and rode.
"We finished up around 2 a.m." Grover said. "And we were back in the gym working out by 7:30 in the morning."
And that’s just it. To Blake Griffin, and most of the NBA, these are just stories.
To Kobe Bryant, that’s a Tuesday night.
He decided to lose 16 lbs for the Olympics in 2012
Kobe has never been out of shape, but he decided to change himself as a precautionary measure. He told the Guardian: "With summer basketball leading directly into the season — and I'm expecting to play until next June — I have to take some load off my knees. I've got to shave some of this weight."
He'd make high school teammates play one-on-one games to 100
Kobe played a bench warmer to 100 multiple times when he was in high school. In Kobe's worst game, he still won 100-12.
He used to practice by himself without a ball, says Shaq
Shaq wrote in his book: "You'd walk in there and he'd be cutting and grunting and motioning like he was dribbling and shooting — except there was no ball. I thought it was weird, but I'm pretty sure it helped him."
He goes through super intense workouts on game days
From ESPN's Rick Reilly: "Among a dozen other drills, Bryant does suicide push-ups. At the top of the pushup, he launches himself off the mat so hard that both his feet come off the ground and his hands slap his pecs. He does three sets of seven of these. This makes me turn away and whimper softly."
He watches film of himself at halftime
According to ESPN's Jackie McMullen in 2010:
"He often corrals teammates, fires up the laptop, and shows them precisely how they can carve out easier shots for themselves."
Caron Butler
Caron Butler says he's grateful he spent a year in Los Angeles as Kobe Bryant's teammate and work out partner.
"I say that's the best thing that ever could have happened for me personally for my career," Butler said. "To play alongside a guy like that, see his preparation, see what it takes to get to that level, that's why I was able to be so good in Washington because I took everything I learned from him under his wing."
Butler played in 77 games in 2004-05 with the Lakers. He averaged a then career-high (by a tick) 15.5 points and then career-high 5.8 rebounds. His free throw shooting improved, too.
"Work ethic," Butler said. "He comes to the gym 6:30, 7 in the morning, gets shots every day, a rhythm. Afterward hits the weight room, works out in the summer, studying film, critiquing guys, watching their tendencies, picking things up ... Just studying the game with him taught me a lot."
Butler and Bryant talk every couple of weeks, and when Butler was traded to Dallas, Bryant was quick with a call.
"He told me he was happy for me and happy to see me in a situation to be able to legitimately compete for a title," Butler said.
But Wednesday will be a different conversation.
"You always hear that he's ready to compete," Butler said. "He's happy but at the same time once we get on the court all bets are off with Kobe. He's going to bring it, then hug me afterwards. That's how it is. It's business."
Kevin Durant
"We had the day off, but they said we could get some shots up if we wanted, so I decided to head over to the gym with [Oklahoma City teammate] Jeff Green.
"Kobe [Bryant] was the only guy on the bus to the gym, and that spoke volumes to me -- he's the best player in the game, yet he's always willing to come work on his game, so that kind of motivated me and Jeff," Durant said. "He went by himself, he got a lot of shots up, and by the time he was done you could see he had gotten better over that hour. Like I said, it was a big inspiration to me and Jeff."
The Pandas Friend (formerly known as Metta World Peace who was formerly Ron Artest)
He reported Thursday that he arrived at the gym early, early in the morning for a hard workout, but once inside, he discovered he wasn't alone.
"3rd workout done. Let me tell why I LOVE KOBE JELLY BEAN BRYANT! I get to the gym at 6:45 am, the Black Mamba is there since 5:30! Go Lakers!!!"
John Celestand
“The first time I began to understand why he was the best was in the pre-season. In a game against the Wizards, Kobe broke the wrist on his shooting hand. He was always the first person to practice every day, arriving at least an hour and a half early. This would infuriate me because I wanted to be the first person to practice, just as I had always been at Villanova and Piscataway High in New Jersey. To add insult to injury, I lived only 10 minutes from the practice facility — while Kobe was at least 35 minutes away.
“I am ashamed to say that I was excited the day after his injury because I knew that there was no way that No. 8 (as former Laker point guard Tyronn Lue called him) would be the first to practice, if he would even be there at all.
“As I walked through the training room, I became stricken with fear when I heard a ball bouncing. No, no, it couldn’t be! Yes it could. Kobe was already in a full sweat with a cast on his right arm and dribbling and shooting with his left.”
Laron Profit
“You know it was so funny, my first experience when I was out in LA, me and Kwame Brown got traded to the Lakers [in Summer of 2005]. We were playing a pick-up game before the season started, we were playing 3-on-3, and it was game point.
“Kobe had the ball and it came off, Kwame knocked the ball away from him.
“Again [this was] a pick-up game, September, nothing on the line. And the ball rolled to half court.
“Kobe then ran to half-court, dived under Kwame’s legs with the ball for about 10 feet, picked the ball up, came back down, made some incredible move, then hit the game-winning shot to end the pick-up game.
“I walked off the court, and I called my mom, and I said, “I think I’ve just seen the second best player ever [behind Jordan].”
“But then around him, you understand that nothing he does is by accident, that all this is a result of hours and hours and hours of preparation. So that when he gets into a situation in a game, in a playoffs game, in a Finals game, his confidence comes from his prepration.
“He once told me at a halftime of a game, he was struggling, I think we were playing Seattle [Sonics] and he was struggling, and I asked him, “How do you feel?” and he said, “I feel great! The second half… the second half. Hey Prof, I work too hard. These shots HAVE to fall eventually because I’ve worked too hard, I’ve shot too many shots.”
“So his belief in himself… when we look at it and see it as arrogance, some people see as may have too much confidence. It’s really just a result of how hard he works, of how much preparation time he puts in his game. That once he steps on the court, he really believes that he will be successful. And that’s what I think I took away from him more than anything else, it’s that your belief in yourself has to come from your confidence and your preparation.
Chris Douglas-Roberts
A lot of ppl wondered why Bean spoke so highly of me last yr. First day of camp Mike Brown tried to throw me in the fire right away. Made me & Bean 1 on 1 partners for the whole first practice. What Mike Brown didn’t know is that’s what I was waiting for. That whole day we went head up. At one point it damn near came to blows bc Bean will do anything for an edge. So he was elbowing me on the low for separation & I couldn’t let that go as a competitor. As a man. The refs were too scared to call the foul bc he was intimidating them all practice. But at then end it was all love. The respect is mutual. Gave me some pointers that are priceless. It’s a misconception on Bean. Ppl think he’s a sucker…hard to play with. It’s just that he expects the most of his teammates bc he works so hard. Easily realist hooper I’ve met. He never lies and I respect that. #ClosestThingtoJordan #HeNeverSleepsEither#ImOut
Robert (The USA Trainer)
The night before the first scrimmage I remember I was just watched “Casablanca” for the first time and it was about 3:30 AM. I lay in bed, slowly fading away when I hear my cell ring. It was Kobe. I nervously picked up.
“Hey, uhh Rob, I hope I’m not disturbing anything right?”
“Uhh no, what’s up Kob?”
“Just wondering if you could just help me out with some conditioning work, that’s all.”
I checked my clock. 4:15 AM.
“Yeah sure, I’ll see you in the facility in a bit.”
It took me about twenty minutes to get my gear and out of the hotel. When I arrived and opened the room to the main practice floor I saw Kobe. Alone. He was drenched in sweat as if he had just taken a swim. It wasn’t even 5AM.
We did some conditioning work for the next hour and fifteen minutes. Then we entered the weight room, where he would do a multitude of strength training exercises for the next 45 minutes. After that we parted ways and he went back to the practice floor to shoot. I went back to the hotel and crashed. Wow.
I was expected to be at the floor again at about 11 AM. I woke up feeling sleepy, drowsy, and almost pretty much every side effect of sleep deprivation. Thanks, Kobe. I had a bagel and headed to the practice facility.
This next part I remember very vividly. All the Team USA players were there, feeling good for the first scrimmage. LeBron was talking to Carmelo if I remember correctly and Coach Krzyzewski was trying to explain something to Kevin Durant. On the right side of the practice facility was Kobe by himself shooting jumpers. And this is how our next conversation went — I went over to him, patted him on the back and said, “Good work this morning.”
“Huh?”
“Like, the conditioning. Good work.”
“Oh. Yeah, thanks Rob. I really appreciate it.”
“So when did you finish?”
“Finish what?”
“Getting your shots up. What time did you leave the facility?”
“Oh just now. I wanted 800 makes so yeah, just now.”
My jaw dropped. Mother of holy God. It was then that I realized that there’s no surprise to why he’s been as effective as he was last season. Every story about his dedication, every quote that he’s said about hard work all came together and hit me like a train. It’s no surprise to me now that he’s dunking on players ten years younger than him and it wasn’t a surprise to me earlier this year when he led the league in scoring.
Excerpt from Shaq Uncut (teenageboy69)
"Kobe stands up and goes face-to-face with me and says, "You always said you're my big brother, you'd do anything for me, and then this Colorado thing happens and you never even called me." I did call him. ... So here we are now, and we find out he really was hurt that we didn't stand behind him. That was something new. I didn't think he gave a rat's ass about us either way. "Well, I thought you'd publicly support me, at least," Kobe said. "You're supposed to be my friend." Brian Shaw chimed in with "Kobe, why would you think that? Shaq had all these parties and you never showed up for any of them. We invited you to dinner on the road and you didn't come. Shaq invited you to his wedding and you weren't there. Then you got married and didn't invite any of us. And now you are in the middle of this problem, this sensitive situation, and now you want all of us to step up for you. We don't even know you." ...
Kobe Goes to the Movies (from Lee Jenkins/SI) (ij_reilly)
Years ago, upon returning from the horror flick Saw II, Bryant described for Lakers trainer Gary Vitti a scene in which a victim awakens to find a contraption locked around his neck lined with nails pointed at his head. A videotape explains that the victim can unlock the device with a key, but it has been surgically implanted behind his right eye, and he can only extract it with a scalpel. He has a minute before it closes over his face and kills him. "I think I could get that key," Bryant said.
SHAQ (johnazoidberg-)
He was so young and so immature in some ways, but I can tell you this: everything Kobe is doing now, he told me all the way back then he was going to do it. We were sitting on the bus once and he told me, "I'm going to be the number one scorer for the Lakers, I'm going to win five or six championships, and I'm going to be the best player in the game." I was like, "Okay, whatever." Then he looked me right in the eye and said, "I'm going to be the Will Smith of the NBA."
Dawgs
Kobe is a scientific dawg. He works out every day, practices every day. Most of the other stars are just dawgs, not scientific dawgs.
Me, I’m a freak-of-nature dawg because of my size. LeBron could be a scientific dawg like Kobe, but he’s not, he's got a lot going on like I did, so that’s preventing him from being one.
The Pandas Friend
What are your thoughts on Kobe?
I thought you'd never ask. We'll be on the plane, playing cards. Kobe will walk up, stop the game and say, "Ron, come to the back of the plane." Then, he'll show me some tape and say, "Look at this. Here's what you need to do." I'll go back to my seat, and then he'll walk up to Shannon Brown, stop the card game and do the same thing. And it doesn't matter if you're sleeping. He'll wake you up and show you things you've never thought about. He puts so much time and passion into the game. I have no problem following somebody who's worth being followed, who works as hard as me. I will follow Kobe anywhere.

[Pelton] New York Knicks player profiles for Kristaps Porzingis, Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose and more

The season can't start soon enough, but to bide our time, here's a thorough overview of our roster as we move into the preseason, courtesy ESPN Insider:

New York Knicks player profiles for Kristaps Porzingis, Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose and more - NBA

by Kevin Pelton on 2016-09-11 01:09:00 UTC
How will Kristaps Porzingis, Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose and the New York Knicks do in 2016-17?
Here are our player scouting reports and analysis.

Projected starters

Derrick Rose
Position: Guard
Experience: 7 years
Age: 27
Scouting report
+ Injury-plagued former MVP still trying to play like a star
+ Poor outside shooter who struggled to finish after eye injury
+ Defensive effort is inconsistent at best
Analysis
From the highs of being drafted No. 1 overall by his hometown team and winning MVP to the lows of a series of injuries and criticism over his slow return, Rose saw it all during seven seasons with the Chicago Bulls. Now he gets a fresh start in the Big Apple after the Knicks gambled on Rose to fill their void at point guard.
In 2015-16, Rose played the most games (66) since he won MVP in 2010-11, but injuries still loomed over his campaign. Rose suffered an orbital fracture early in training camp and experienced vision problems thereafter, getting off to a slow start. After a 3-of-15 effort on Dec. 2, Rose's 2-point percentage bottomed out at 37.0 percent. The rest of the season, he shot 46.9 percent on 2s, more in line with his 2014-15 mark (46.5 percent).
Of course, even with normal sight Rose wasn't efficient enough as a scorer to justify the large role he continued to play in the Chicago offense. His usage rate dipped a bit last season to 27.3 percent, but even if you take out the month of November, Rose's .496 true shooting percentage (again in line with his .493 mark from the previous season) was better than only Kobe Bryant (.469) among players who used more than 26 percent of their team's plays.
At times, Rose can still rediscover the athleticism that made him so hard to contain in his early years, particularly when rested. As in 2014-15, Rose was far less efficient in the second game of back-to-backs (.458 true shooting percentage, per Basketball-Reference.com) than with one day rest (.488) and more efficient still with two days of rest (.512). Alas, the trend didn't hold for more than two days of rest, when Rose's true shooting percentage dipped back to .460.
Too often, when Rose is unable to get into the paint he settles for low-percentage perimeter shots off the dribble. He wisely cut his attempts from 3-point range after shooting worse than 30 percent from beyond the arc for a second consecutive season, but turned too many of those attempts into long 2-pointers that are less efficient considering they're not worth as many points.
Then there's defense. A plus at the position in his prime, Rose no longer can compensate with athleticism when he takes plays off. Without the protection of Tom Thibodeau's defensive scheme, Rose was exposed last season, ranking among the league's bottom five point guards defensively in ESPN's real plus-minus.
Courtney Lee
Position: Guard
Experience: 8 years
Age: 30
Scouting report
+ Experienced 3-and-D role player at shooting guard
+ Good 3-point shooter who could stand to take more
+ Solid individual defender who holds up against bigger opponents
Analysis
Lee is the needed role player at shooting guard Phil Jackson thought he was getting in Arron Afflalo last season, but Lee came at a high price. After helping the Charlotte Hornets finish strong after a midseason trade from the Memphis Grizzlies, Lee cashed in on a four-year, $48 million deal that will pay him through age 34 -- by which point he's likely to be in decline.
For now, Lee is an ideal offensive fit on a team with multiple shot creators. While he can occasionally create his own shot, Lee doesn't require the ball in his hands. You'll instead find him spotting up. Lee is a career 38.4 percent 3-point shooter who has been reasonably accurate from the wings (36.7 percent) and great in the corners (40.7 percent career, per Basketball-Reference.com). If anything, Lee should probably take more 3s and cut out the nearly quarter of his shot attempts he has used on long 2-point jumpers, something New York head coach Jeff Hornacek might encourage.
Given their other perimeter starters, the Knicks will need Lee to take the most difficult matchup. At 6-foot-5, Lee is a little too small to defend some bigger wings, but he's up for the challenge and does well against physical players. Lee's addition was a big reason the Hornets improved from 12th in the NBA in defensive rating before the All-Star break to seventh after the break.
Carmelo Anthony
Position: Forward
Experience: 13 years
Age: 32
Scouting report
+ Nine-time All-Star who's a premier one-on-one scorer
+ Now makes his living in the midrange
+ Poor defender who'd rather switch than fight through screens
Analysis
Anthony shook off any concerns about the patellar debridement that ended his 2014-15 season by playing at more or less the same level last season, earning his ninth All-Star appearance. After establishing himself as the greatest U.S. Olympic men's basketball player ever by winning a third gold medal, Anthony returns to a team built around his timeline. However, Anthony will have to adapt to playing with Derrick Rose, his highest-usage teammate since he played with Allen Iverson with the Denver Nuggets.
In his 30s, Anthony has become the master of the midrange. Per NBA.com/Stats, he led the league by making 3.7 2-pointers from outside the paint per game, which he shot at a healthy 44.5 percent clip. Anthony likes to isolate in the midpost and use the threat of the drive to set up an uncontested jumper. Because he gets to the basket less frequently than in his athletic prime, Anthony's free throw attempts have declined, and he shot a career-low 5.6 per game last year. But Anthony is still good at drawing and selling contact. During 2012-13 and 2013-14, his best offensive seasons, Anthony was able to boost his efficiency with high-percentage 3-point shooting. That hasn't been the case since then, with Anthony hitting nearly 34 percent of his 3s.
Defense has always been an issue for Anthony, and his diminishing athleticism only figures to exacerbate the issue. He might be forced to defend higher-scoring small forwards who are too big for Lee. The ultimate solution would be moving Anthony to power forward, since he's an excellent rebounder and it would facilitate his desire to switch off-ball screens. Alas, New York's offseason moves don't suggest that's in the immediate plans.
Kristaps Porzingis
Position: Forward
Experience: 1 year
Age: 21
Scouting report
+ Uber-talented 21-year-old who emerged as key contributor way ahead of schedule
+ Excellent shooter for his size who should improve beyond the arc in year two
+ Held his own against stronger opponents and showed potential as rim protector
Analysis
Even the biggest Porzingis fans acknowledged entering the 2015 draft that he'd probably be a multi-year project. Not so: Porzingis started right away at age 20 and was the Knicks' second-best player as a rookie. He probably would have won rookie of the year most seasons but settled for a second-place finish behind Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Early on, Porzingis turned heads with a stunning series of putback dunks, which was odd because his offensive rebounding was poor for a power forward overall. That's to be expected since Porzingis spends much of his time on the perimeter. He shot just 34.3 percent from 3-point range as a rookie, but was much more accurate (45.4 percent) on 2-point jumpers beyond 16 feet, according to Basketball-Reference.com. International players tend to struggle with the longer NBA 3-point line in their first seasons in the league before improving in Year 2, so expect Porzingis to at least get to league average beyond the arc. His next step offensively will be improving his ability to post up smaller defenders teams put on him to counter the shooting. Per Synergy Sports tracking on NBA.com/Stats, Porzingis shot just 40.5 percent on post-ups, putting him in the bottom 10 among players with at least 100 attempts.
At 7-foot-3, Porzingis proved remarkably adept at defending smaller opponents on the perimeter. His huge wingspan allows Porzingis to play a step off and still contest shots, and his nimble feet allow him to cover ground quickly against the pick-and-roll. Naturally, Porzingis' size also makes him an effective shot blocker, and he swatted more shots than the average center. Ultimately, Porzingis' future lies in the middle, where he played about a quarter of his minutes last season according to Nylon Calculus tracking. Porzingis will have to add strength to defend bigger players down low, and New York seems in no hurry to move him there full-time.
Joakim Noah
Position: Center
Experience: 9 years
Age: 31
Scouting report
+ Skilled center whose scoring has deteriorated in wake of injuries
+ No longer has explosiveness to finish around the basket
+ Remains an excellent pick-and-roll defender and strong rebounder
Analysis
After trading starting center Robin Lopez to the Bulls as part of the package for Rose, the Knicks had a huge hole in the middle. They filled it with another ex-Chicago player, signing Noah to a four-year, $72 million deal that will pay him through age 35. With the deal, New York is betting big on Noah overcoming the dislocated shoulder that required season-ending surgery in January and the other maladies that have limited his explosiveness.
Before his season ended, Noah was shooting just 38.3 percent, down from 44.5 percent in 2014-15 and 47.5 percent when he was an All-NBA First Team pick in 2013-14. Never a great finisher at his best, Noah made just 42.5 percent of his attempts inside three feet, the worst mark among players with at least 100 attempts, according to Basketball-Reference.com. He also stopped shooting from the high post, making just two shots all season from beyond 15 feet -- down from 59 in 2013-14. Without the threat of him making shots, defenders can sag off Noah, closing off passing lanes and taking away his ability to find teammates.
Despite his offensive decline, Noah was still valuable to the Bulls for his defensive presence. Chicago's defense collapsed after Noah's injury and allowed 5.5 more points per 100 possessions with him on the bench, per NBA.com/Stats. Noah still covers ground well and is as savvy defending the pick-and-roll as any starting center. He's less effective protecting the rim -- opponents shot 52.4 percent inside five feet against him, according to SportVU tracking data on NBA.com/Stats -- and the Knicks might actually want to use Porzingis as their primary help defender when matchups allow. But Noah was a fine defensive rebounder in 2015-16 and can help Porzingis in that regard.

Reserves

Brandon Jennings
Position: Guard
Experience: 7 years
Age: 26
Scouting report
+ Longtime starter who shot poorly in return from ruptured Achilles
+ Excellent at creating low-percentage shot attempts; capable passer
+ Showed surprisingly little athletic decline after injury
Analysis
Having ruptured his Achilles in January 2015, Jennings returned nearly a year later, having lost his starting job with the Detroit Pistons to newcomer Reggie Jackson. Jackson's presence made Jennings expendable in a midseason trade with the Orlando Magic. After finishing out the season in Orlando, Jennings signed a one-year, $5 million deal with New York in the hopes of parlaying a big season in the Big Apple into a 2017 payday.
Given Rose's fragility, Jennings should have an opportunity to start at some point. Whether he makes good on it depends on whether his shooting bounces back. Never a high-percentage shooter, Jennings made just 32.9 percent of his 3-point attempts last season while taking more 3s than 2s. Jennings tends to shoot a lot of 3s off the dribble, so his percentage will never be great, but getting back to his career 35 percent mark would help. Because he's a low-percentage finisher, Jennings tends to be better at creating shots than hitting them, so he'd be most valuable to the Knicks if Anthony and Rose are both on the bench at the same time and he can be a focal point.
Coming back from the injury, Jennings looked as athletic as before. That would almost certainly make him New York's best defensive option at point guard despite his being a slight 6-foot-1.
Lance Thomas
Position: Forward
Experience: 5 years
Age: 28
Scouting report
+ Combo forward who contributes primarily at defensive end
+ Unexpectedly emerged as a 40 percent 3-point shooter last season
+ By far the Knicks' best defender against big wings
Analysis
An offensive liability over his first four NBA seasons, Thomas added a 3-point element almost overnight, making 44 triples in 59 games at a 40.4 percent clip last season. That made him an indispensable role player for New York, which re-signed him to a four-year deal worth more than $27 million as an unrestricted free agent.
Thomas was fourth on the Knicks in minutes played per game in the fourth quarter, reflecting his tendency to finish games as part of small lineups with Porzingis at center. Such combos allowed Thomas to guard the opposition's best forward, freeing Anthony from that responsibility. At 6-foot-8, 235 pounds, Thomas has ideal size to defend bigger wings or stretch 4s, and his ability to get low in his stance makes him effective individually on the wing. Alas, Thomas' focus on his assignment means he's almost a complete non-contributor on the defensive glass. He grabbed just 8.0 percent of defensive rebounds, worse than the average point guard.
Always a capable defender, Thomas was able to justify more minutes by virtue of his offensive transformation. He'd attempted just 23 3-pointers in his first four NBA seasons, making seven of them. Inevitably, some regression beyond the arc should be expected, although my SCHOENE projection system pegs Thomas to make a healthy 38.5 percent of his 3s in 2016-17.
Kyle O'Quinn
Position: Center
Experience: 4 years
Age: 26
Scouting report
+ Skilled backup center whose high-post game fits well in triangle
+ Has range to about 20 feet on jumpers and is a good passer for center
+ Fine shot blocker and rebounder who tends to be prone to fouls
Analysis
The emergence of Porzingis as a center option hurt O'Quinn, who also had to battle now-departed Kevin Seraphin for playing time off the bench. Despite offering effective play, O'Quinn averaged just 11.8 minutes per game. He has a chance to see more action this season, particularly given the likelihood of Noah missing time.
A good passer for a center (he averaged 3.4 assists per 36 minutes, better than Noah did in his first five NBA seasons), O'Quinn is also an accurate enough midrange shooter to keep defenses honest (43.9 percent on 2-point attempts beyond 16 feet, per Basketball-Reference.com). All of that made him a good fit at the elbow in the triangle, though O'Quinn can certainly be effective in a more conventional offense, too. Given the time he spends on the perimeter, O'Quinn's league-average offensive rebounding for a center is actually quite impressive, and he generally finished well around the basket before declining last season.
The burly O'Quinn blocks shots well but can be too aggressive in trying to contest. He has a bad habit of going for shot fakes and averaged 5.0 fouls per 36 minutes, which would be an issue were he to start in place of Noah. O'Quinn moves well for a center and covers a lot of ground. He's also a good defensive rebounder.
Sasha Vujacic
Position: Guard
Experience: 9 years
Age: 32
Scouting report
+ Longtime Phil Jackson player who offers triangle experience
+ After slow start, shot reasonably well on frequent 3-point attempts
+ Tries to do too much defensively to his detriment
Analysis
Accurately described by comedian Josh Gondelman as looking "like the protagonist in a Wes Anderson movie about basketball," Vujacic returned to the NBA after playing just two games in the previous four seasons. Having played five-plus seasons for Knicks president Phil Jackson when he coached the L.A. Lakers, Vujacic brings familiarity with the triangle offense and his typically aggressive style of play.
With Afflalo sidelined, Vujacic began the season as New York's starting shooting guard -- but not, as the old joke goes, making guard. At one point after falling out of the rotation, he missed 14 consecutive shots over nearly a month's time. Vujacic ultimately found his range after getting regular minutes under interim head coach Kurt Rambis and made 36.4 percent of his 3-point attempts. His 40.3 percent shooting inside the arc was a much bigger concern. Vuajcic has never finished well and took 28.5 percent of his shots in the dead zone between 16 feet and the 3-point line, per Basketball-Reference.com.
Even in his 30s, Vujacic continues to play an ultra-aggressive brand of defense that frustrates both opponents and at times his own fans. He'll get up into opponents far from the basket, running the risk of getting blown by off the dribble. But Vujacic's strong defensive rebounding was a plus for the Knicks' second unit.
Mindaugas Kuzminskas
Position: Forward
Experience: Rookie
Age: 26
Scouting report
+ Lithuanian combo forward coming to NBA at age 27 (when season starts)
+ Not a good 3-point shooter from shorter FIBA line
+ May struggle to find good defensive matchups
Analysis
A veteran European star who is part of the Lithuanian national team, Kuzminskas will make the leap to the NBA this season after signing a two-year, $5.8 million deal for New York's midlevel exception. Kuzminskas, who will turn 27 during preseason, is expected to help provide forward depth right away.
The 6-foot-9 Kuzminskas played small forward in Spain for Unicaja Malaga, where his size allowed him to effectively post up smaller defenders. Alas, Kuzminskas might not supply enough shooting to play the 3 in the NBA. He was a below-average 3-point shooter from the shorter FIBA line and may struggle to hit more than a third of his 3s in the NBA. One solution for the Knicks is to pair him with Lance Thomas in a frontcourt combination in which the two players can interchange forward positions depending on matchups.
Playing Kuzminskas with Thomas will also help hide him defensively, where he might not have a position. Kuzminskas isn't strong enough to deal with many NBA power forwards and figures to be a below-average rebounder in that role. Also, Kuzminskas doesn't figure to have the requisite lateral mobility to deal with NBA-caliber athletes on the wing. So he may prove a defensive liability.
Justin Holiday
Position: Guard
Experience: 3 years
Age: 27
Scouting report
+ Aspiring 3-and-D specialist who made progress as a shooter last season
+ Can provide secondary ballhandling but mostly plays off the ball
+ Lanky, long-armed defender who commits to defending one-on-one
Analysis
"Hawks University" decided to pull Holiday's scholarship midway through his first season in Atlanta, as the Hawks dealt him to the Bulls with a second-round pick for veteran guard Kirk Hinrich. Because of injuries, Holiday averaged 18.9 minutes a game in Chicago after the deadline, shooting 43.3 percent from 3-point range. He'll battle for reserve minutes in New York after being thrown in the Rose deal.
Holiday hasn't become a rotation player because he hasn't been a consistent outside shooter. He shot 32.1 percent from 3-point range during 2014-15 with the Golden State Warriors and made just 10 of his 45 attempts in Atlanta before catching fire over a small sample (60 shots) with the Bulls. If Holiday can merely get to 35 percent from 3, his ballhandling skills are good enough that he's a playable reserve.
Holiday is playing primarily for his defense anyway. He's 6-foot-6 with a wingspan measured at 7 feet, per DraftExpress. Because of his thin frame, Holiday isn't ideal against combo forwards, but he can handle most wings and would pair well defensively with the bigger Lance Thomas. At 27, Holiday doesn't have much upside, but he can provide low-cost minutes for a team in need of depth.
Willy Hernangomez
Position: Center
Experience: Rookie
Age: 22
Scouting report
+ Young Spanish big man who finishes well around the basket
+ Has good hands and is effective in the pick-and-roll game
+ Poor shot blocker who always figures to be limited defensively
Analysis
The Knicks added Hernangomez, who played with Porzingis in Sevilla, with a pick they purchased in the second round of the 2015 draft. After winning an ACB championship with Real Madrid and a bronze medal with Spain in the Olympics, the 22-year-old Hernangomez is headed to New York on a four-year contract worth almost $6 million.
Playing a small role for Real Madrid, Hernangomez made 66 percent of his 2-point attempts last season. While he's unlikely to shoot that well, Hernangomez has the tools to finish against NBA defenders. He can go up to get lobs out of the pick-and-roll game and also catches the ball well on the move before finishing from a variety of angles around the basket. Hernangomez is a good free throw shooter (70.7 percent last season) who has flirted with a 3-point shot in the past, though that's a long way from becoming a regular part of his arsenal.
The 6-foot-10 Hernangomez doesn't have the lateral mobility necessary to defend power forwards, so he's strictly a center and a below-average shot blocker in that role. Hernangomez rarely leaves his feet to block shots, which makes it difficult for him to contest shots at his height. Real Madrid mostly settled on having him drop in the pick-and-roll because when he tried to show on ballhandlers, teams could create open shots for the big men on pick-and-pops. Hernangomez will also have to improve his strength to defend one-on-one in the post. As a result, he's unlikely to see rotation minutes this season when the Knicks are at full strength.
Maurice Ndour
Position: Forward
Experience: Rookie
Age: 24
Scouting report
+ High-post big man who's a capable midrange shooter and passer
+ Not a particularly efficient scorer; gets few easy scores
+ Good shot blocker for a power forward
Analysis
Ndour impressed while playing for New York in the 2015 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas alongside Porzingis, but the Dallas Mavericks swooped in to sign him with a guaranteed contract. The Mavericks ended up overfilling their roster and Ndour was the odd man out at the end of training camp. After playing briefly with Hernangomez for Real Madrid, he has finally landed with the Knicks on a two-year minimum deal that's fully guaranteed this season.
The triangle offense was a perfect showcase for Ndour's skills. He's an accurate midrange shooter who had college 3-point range (he made 27 3-pointers at a 43.5 percent clip as a senior at Ohio) and also a good passer for a big man. With the Mavericks, Ndour attempted to show he could make the NBA 3 and shot 2-of-13 beyond the arc in the preseason. Hopefully that experiment is behind him, though eventually Ndour needs to score more efficiently than he can subsisting on a heavy diet of long 2s.
A quality shot blocker in college, Ndour blocked two shots a game during his impressive summer-league run. His ability to protect the rim and defend power forwards might ultimately make him a good partner for Hernangomez, though neither is in line for rotation minutes at this point.
Marshall Plumlee
Position: Center
Experience: Rookie
Age: 24
Scouting report
+ Late-blooming younger brother of two NBA centers
+ Ultra-high-percentage finisher who knows limitations
+ Weak defensive rebounder who may have trouble with NBA athleticism
Analysis
The younger brother of fellow Duke products Miles and Mason, Plumlee will join them in the NBA this season. After playing sparingly his first three seasons in Durham, Plumlee emerged as a starter as a senior. His performance was enough to earn him a three-year minimum contract from New York as an undrafted free agent with his 2016-17 salary fully guaranteed.
It's safe to say that Plumlee knows his role on offense. He used just 12.1 percent of Duke's plays as a senior, and that was up from single-digit usage rates the previous two seasons. Plumlee will finish dump-offs around the rim at a high percentage (he shot 68.8 percent last season after hitting 76.2 percent as a senior) and never tries anything else. Per Synergy Sports tracking, Plumlee attempted just four shots all season from beyond five feet. When he doesn't have the ball, Plumlee is battling for position on the offensive glass.
While he's got similar size to his brothers, Plumlee isn't the same kind of athlete, and that may ultimately limit his NBA career. He may struggle in pick-and-roll coverage and against stretch big men. Plumlee was only a decent shot blocker in college and was a poor defensive rebounder, which suggests those will become major shortcomings in the NBA.
Ron Baker
Position: Guard
Experience: Rookie
Age: 23
Scouting report
+ Combo guard who's likely to play point in NBA
+ Will have to prove he can defend NBA point guards
Analysis
Baker helped take Wichita State to unprecedented heights -- a Final Four as a freshman, an undefeated regular season as a sophomore -- but went undrafted before signing a deal with the Knicks to fight for the 15th roster spot in training camp. As a Shocker, Baker started alongside Fred VanVleet and also backed him up, and he'll likely have to settle in as a point guard in the NBA at 6-foot-4.
Working in Baker's favor is New York's need for a third point guard, given Derrick Rose's injury history. Working against him is the fact that he's struggled at times with his decision making when confronted with NBA length and athleticism, and he hasn't had to guard quicker athletes on a regular basis.
J.P. Tokoto
Position: Guard
Experience: Rookie
Age: 22
Scouting report
+ Athletic wing player in search of an outside shot
+ Has shown promise as wing defender
Analysis
Tokoto made headlines last fall when he passed on playing overseas in favor of signing the non-guaranteed tender offer the Philadelphia 76ers were required to make to retain his rights as a second-round pick. Tokoto was waived during training camp, making him a free agent, and ended up playing in the D-League. He's likely headed back after signing with New York, given the team doesn't need more wings, but will at least get a $100,000 bonus via the guaranteed portion of his contract (per Eric Pincus of BasketballInsiders.com).
A phenomenal athlete, Tokoto has to prove he can keep defenses honest with his outside shooting to stick in the D-League. He failed to do so last season with the Oklahoma City Blue, shooting 25.0 percent from 3-point range.
Chasson Randle
Position: Guard
Experience: Rookie
Age: 23
Scouting report
+ Shooting guard in the body of a point guard
+ Played well in summer league
Analysis
After playing his first season out of Stanford in the Czech Republic for ČEZ Basketball Nymburk, Randle averaged 18.3 points, 5.0 assists and 3.0 steals in three games for the Knicks in the Orlando Pro Summer League. He parlayed that into a deal with $100,000 guaranteed, per BasketballInsiders.com. That performance aside, Randle will have to prove he can run the point to make the roster. While he did at times in college, he and the team were most effective when he played off the ball. That's not realistic in the NBA at 6-foot-2.
