What Clemson's Drop To Number Two Means, Historically Speaking

So, as we all know, Clemson dropped from No 1 to No 2 in the AP Poll after a very narrow victory over the Tar Heels. This isn't the first time a team has dropped after a win, either, as shown by this quote here: “The No. 1 team has won and dropped in the rankings 90 times since the AP poll started in 1936, including four times when there was a tie for No. 1.” Now, of course this had me curious: how did those teams turn out? Were they winners or were they clearly overrated? And how does that impact what we saw on Sunday? So I went through and found all the AP No 1 teams that dropped to No 2 after a win and wrote them here with the date that it happened and where they ended up in parentheses.

Observations

While being toppled midseason despite winning is not a death sentence (see 2009 Alabama and 2001 Miami among others, it’s definitely not a good sign for the team in question. Of the 74 previous teams to have been bumped, only 15 have gone on to win the AP Title, just a little over 20%. I don’t need to tell you that those aren’t great odds, and those odds only get worse (only 6 titles between 46 teams). Sure, that’s still better odds than ending up unranked like 1961 Iowa (when polls were only top ten until the final poll, where they became top twenty), but it’s clear that whenever the AP Poll shuffles a top team down, that usually means some major flaw reared its head. Will Clemson fix this issue and become the 16th team to win a title after a drop like this? Only time will tell, but if history has anything to say about it, I wouldn’t bet on it. Despite it supposedly being easier for teams like this to win the national title during the CFP era, the only two teams to suffer this (2014 FSU and 2015 OSU) would not win. Florida State would do this in the Playoff while Ohio State ended up on the outside looking in. Even going back to the beginning of the BCS era, only two teams have finished number one despite this slide (2001 Miami and 2009 Alabama). Based on that alone, Clemson is as likely to wind up in ranked in the teens as they are to win a Natty.

Tldr; While not necessarily bad news, history generally doesn’t look to kindly on number one teams dropped in the polls after a win.

Fun Facts:

Iowa Pre-Flight was robbed of a title in 1943. Just sayin’.

During the 1950’s the “Number One Team Wins But Still Drops In The Polls” occurred 22 times. If you were to count backwards from today using that as a benchmark, you’d find yourself seeing Washington slip to Number 2 in 1992.

On November 27, 1967, Indiana (4th) was ranked higher than Alabama (8th)

There was a magical 3 week period in 1990 where Virginia was ranked number 1 in the AP Poll. They finished 23rd.

Since the turn of the millenium, having multiple instances of this has only occurred twice, in 2001 and 2009. We are currently tied with the longest drought of multiple occurrences of this in one season since the AP Poll’s inception (the other time being from 1982-1992)

The average final resting place of the team this happens to is 4.84, with a high of 1 and a low of unranked. Teams usually finish in the top 4.

This is the first time this has happened to Clemson. Oklahoma has had to deal with it 12 times. The next closest is a tie between Ohio State and Notre Dame (6).

What if Universities Gambled their Endowment on Football? The 2018 Endowment Stakes Retrospective

The 2018 /CFB Endowment Stakes - A Retrospective

Note: This post is best enjoyed on a desktop with old Reddit: click here

Hello all - over the course of last season I ran an ongoing series with the goal of determining what would happen if each FBS university staked their endowment on their football program. Each week, schools would gamble 50% of their endowment on the money line odds for each game they participated in.

I ran fourteen editions of this throughout the season. Unfortunately, due to work and health issues, by the end of the last season, I didn't have the time to create and submit the final post. Throughout the entire offseason, I planned on publishing the last version and it turns out I waited until the last possible week to publish content from the 2018 season. So without further ado, enjoy the last edition of the 2018 Endowment Stakes.

I tracked each and every game in 2018 with their betting implications in a Google Sheet

Notes:

I had a great time publishing this series throughout the course of last season. While not an avid gambler myself, I am intrigued by sports betting and this was a great exercise to see the effect of money line gambling. A big thank you to all who followed along last season and left notes/feedback.

I've received a handful of PM's asking if this series will be coming back for another season. The short answer is probably no, with shifting work responsibility I don't have the capability to do this on my own. A great deal of work went into each week of posting, and I fear I don't have the capability to do this on my own this season. If you are interested in helping out and keeping the season alive, PM me and we can see if there is a way to make it work

There was some discussion throughout the season of making an interactive version of this, where users could gamble on a set of games each week; if you have the capability to manage that, please PM me and let me know

Past Editions:

Week 13 Week 12 Week 11 Week 10 Week 9 Week 8 Week 7 Week 6 Week 5 Week 4 Week 3 Week 2 Week 1 Week 0 Pre-Season

Thank you again for the support on this series and have a great 2019 season!

What if Universities Gambled Endowment on Football? The Endowment Stakes Week 2

The 2018 /CFB Endowment Stakes - Week 2

Note: This post is best enjoyed on a desktop with old Reddit: click here

Concept (Please Read): Each week, all FBS teams will gamble 50% of their remaining endowment against the money line odds. Teams do not bet against each other, but rather the /CFB Sports Book

Heavy favorites will be mildly rewarded for their wins, but upsets will propel universities up the rankings, bringing economic prosperity and opportunities to their students - that is until they lose the following week and wipe out half of their remaining endowment.
How money line betting works:
If a team has negative odds, they are the favorite - Ex: Utah -220, must wager $220 to profit $100
If a team has positive odds, they are the underdog - Ex: LSU +350, must wager $100 to profit $350

Track the standings and each week's matchups in the Google Sheet

This was a rough week for many universities across the country. The Sports Book profited over $11B, with fewer upsets meaning smaller payouts

Week 2 Results

Week 2 Recap Infographic

Duke #6 Duke storms into Evanston and takes down Northwestern #3 Northwestern. Duke is handsomely rewarded for their win with a $4.66B profit to enter the #3 spot. Fortunately for the Wildcats, their large endowment plus winnings from their Purdue matchup allows them to retain a spot in the top 5.
Penn State #12 Penn State and Pittsburgh #14 Pittsburgh have been close contenders all season, but Penn State pulled away in the battle of Pennsylvania to take home $680M and inch closer to the top 10. Penn State also gets the pleasure of sending their inner-state rival down to #25, due to Pitt's $2B loss.
Savannah State Savannah State traveled to take on Miami Miami, where they were shut down in one of the most lopsided games that will take place this season. This game is unique since the closing line for Miami was -999999, meaning they had to gamble a million dollars for every $100 in profit. The Hurricanes took home $23,725 from their nearly quarter billion dollar bet.
Clemson Clemson is going to struggle to gain much traction in the rankings this season. As heavy favorites in all their games, they will need to be perfect to grow their $651M endowment throughout the season. In a close affair with Texas A&M #4 Texas A&M (who risked a whopping $4.9B), Clemson hung on to earn $65M. Texas A&M stays in the top 10 even after their big financial loss
Liberty #23 Liberty is an interesting story. Despite being the youngest university in the FBS, they have been able to amass a $1.29B endowment. After a strong first week upset, Liberty found themselves in the top 25 and a matchup with Army Army. Unfortunately for Liberty, they fell and erased their Week 1 earnings via a $1.26B gamble gone wrong.
Hawai'i #17 Hawai'i continues to be the best investment of the year. The Rainbow Warriors have increased their endowment tenfold in their first three games, most recently in the defeat of Rice #21 Rice. Rice started the season at #8, but two losses have resulted in a $4B loss, and a quick trip out of the top 25.
Kentucky Kentucky unbelievably now find themselves in the top 25 after their shocking upset of Florida Florida. The Wildcats end the 31-year losing streak and take home a $2.75B profit of a modest $680M bet. Florida loses $800M and will have to upset some SEC foes to make their original endowment back.
Stanford #1 Stanford shut down USC #9 USC on Saturday night - at this point, The Cardinal has a lot of breathing room at the top. Barring a major, multi-billion dollar upset, Stanford can withstand not one, not two, not three, but four losses for a top 25 spot. USC lost $2.56B, but are still at the #20 spot.

Week 3 Big Bets

Week 3 Infographic

SMU SMU has had a rough season so far, losing both games and 75% of their endowment. In Week 3, they travel to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan #8 Michigan and should they pull off the upset, they will earn a huge $24.6B profit. Meanwhile, Michigan stands to make just $10.13M
Ohio State #13 Ohio State, despite being 2-0, has managed to win just $20M, despite gambling over $2B each week. In Week 3, the Buckeyes travel to take on TCU TCU. Ohio State can earn its first meaningful winnings of nearly half a billion should they win, but the Horned Frogs can earn nearly $3 Billion should they take down Ohio State.
USC #20 USC travels to Austin to take on Texas Texas in a classic matchup. Will the Trojans right the ship and take $1.91B or will the Longhorns finally be back and climb back into the top 25 with a $576M win
Vanderbilt #6 Vanderbilt has climbed the ranks and is the leading SEC team when they travel to take on Notre Dame #2 Notre Dame. Every week we have been blessed with a top 10 matchup, and this week Vanderbilt hopes to take home $14.28B if they can upset Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish hope to cement themselves in the #2 spot after a sluggish performance against Ball State with a $1.53B win.
Auburn Auburn hosts LSU LSU Saturday afternoon - as mentioned, this experiment is most difficult for good teams with low endowments. This is an opportunity for both teams to take advantage of the closer money lines. LSU will crack the top 25 with a $2.11B win, while Auburn can earn a significant $114M payday at home.
Arizona State Arizona State shocked the Big Ten last week to jump 24 spots. Should they hold off San Diego State San Diego State, they will continue their climb with a $350M win. The Aztecs can also make a splash and right the ship with a $110M win.
Army Army opens up as favorites at home against Hawai'i Hawai'i, but don't sleep on the Rainbow Warriors! If Hawai'i can continue their streak of upsets, they will take over $3B with them on the 4,957 mile flight home. Army has a chance to continue their recovery from a week one loss with a $21M win.

What if Universities Gambled their Endowment on Football? The Endowment Stakes Week 3

The 2018 /CFB Endowment Stakes - Week 3

Note: This post is best enjoyed on a desktop with old Reddit - click here

Duke #3 Duke topples Baylor Baylor for back to back upsets. The Blue Devils win big and take home over $10B to pass Notre Dame and take the #2 spot.
In bigger upsets this week, BYU #24 BYU rockets 20 spaces in their upset of Wisconsin #19 Wisconsin. BYU now holds the highest growth percentage, increasing their original endowment by nearly 900%. BYU won a staggering $12.63B, while the Badgers left the top 25 and said goodbye to $1.38B
Northwestern #4 Northwestern's struggles continued this week, losing $3.86B in their loss to Akron Akron. The Zips won big, taking home $982M on their $610M bet

LSU LSU upset Auburn Auburn at the last second to take home $2.44B in winnings. This sent LSU skyrocketing into the top 25, while Auburn has work to do after losing half a billion dollars.
Hawai'i #17 Hawai'i still holds one of the most improved endowments, despite losing to Army Army on a long, long road trip. The Rainbow Warriors slipped out of the top 25 with their $1.66B loss, but are still the nation's second highest return on investment.
North Texas North Texas blew out Arkansas Arkansas to nearly double their endowment with a $347M win. Meanwhile, the Razorbacks' disastrous season continues, losing $250M/

Illinois Illinois can become the Stanford of the Midwest when they take on Penn State #11 Penn State. The Fighting Illini are on the outside looking in of the top 25 right now, but will earn a monstrous $31B should they take down the Nittany Lions, who stand to gain only $34M.
Stanford #1 Stanford travel to Eugene to take on Oregon Oregon in what may be the Cardinal's biggest test this season. Will the rich get richer? Stanford, despite being favorites, stands to gain $11.59B if they win, which will grow their total to $45B, more than double the current #2. Oregon can cross the billion-dollar mark this week with a $511M win, should the Ducks take down Stanford.
Alabama Alabama may be #1 in everything that matters, but for the Endowment Stakes, they are #50. Unfortunately for the Tide, they are heavy favorites again and can only stand to gain $7M. Their opponents, Texas A&M Texas A&M have a lot to play for, where $28.59B awaits them, if they pull off the upset.
Washington State Washington State surpassed USC USC last week, and on Friday the two schools will take each other on. The Cougs can win $1.07B and enter the top 25 if they win, while the Trojans hope to recover and earn $368M.
Boston College #19 Boston College travels to West Lafayette to take on Purdue Purdue. Boston College has had steady improvement and can earn their first real paycheck this week with a $606M paycheck. Purdue stands to earn back $318M of their $2.1B in losses this season.
Kentucky #13 Kentucky keeps on climbing, and this week they take on Mississippi State Mississippi State with a huge $6.43B to win. The Bulldogs are facorites, and they can earn a modest $73M with a win.

What if Universities Gambled their Endowment on Football? The Endowment Stakes Week 6

The 2018 /CFB Endowment Stakes - Week 4

Through Week 4, the /CFB Sports Book is down $23.25B

Universities continue to devour Vegas money, earning an additional $13B in endowment to fund education and other activities.

Week 4 Results

Stanford #1 Stanford storms back against Oregon in their biggest test this season. With minutes left, it looked like the Cardinal would say goodbye to more than $17B, but hold on, we are going to overtime and Stanford took home $11.84B!
Kentucky #13 Kentucky shocks Mississippi State Mississippi State going into the game with +300 odds. Kentucky soars to inches away from the top 5 with a $6.19B win.
Wisconsin Wisconsin defeats Iowa Iowa to re-enter the top 25. The Badgers shake off last week's upset and take home $440M.
Texas Tech Texas Tech jump 28 spots to #15 when they cruised by Oklahoma State Oklahoma State on Saturday. The Red Raiders nearly doubled their endowment with a $2.05B win.
SMU SMU edges by Navy Navy to pull off the upset. SMU has had a rough season so far, but this exciting game gave them a needed $202M win.
Buffalo Buffalo (the Bulls, not the Bills) find themselves at 4-0 and now in the top 25 at #20 after defeating Rutgers Rutgers. Buffalo has nearly tripled their original endowment, adding over $300M this week.
Virginia Tech #16 Virginia Tech, don't think I have forgotten about you! Old Dominion Old Dominion takes down the Hokies and win $375M off just a $13.3M bet in one of the most lopsided upsets. Tech remains in the top 25, but not before losing $1.83B

Week 5 Big Bets

This is it, #1 against #2: Stanford #1 Stanford will travel to Notre Dame #2 Notre Dame and open up as underdogs, standing to gain $38.25B! Notre Dame stands to gain a "paltry" $6.02B in comparison, but the winner will be #1*
*Unless BYU #4 BYU has anything to say about it. BYU travels to Seattle to take on Washington #18 Washington. As underdogs, BYU stands to gain $47.14B if they can pull off the upset. The Huskies will gain another $100M should they hold on.
Duke #3 Duke stand to gain another $5B when they take on Virginia Tech #22 Virginia Tech. The Hokies hope to recover and can nearly wipe out last week's loss with a $1.74B win.
Ohio State #12 Ohio State travel to take on rival Penn State #11 Penn State. Surprisngly, lines opened up in higher favorites for the Buckeyes than expected. Regardless, Ohio State can win $1.34B and have their first notable win of the season, or Penn State can hang on at home to add nearly $4B to their total and climb close to the top 5.
Michigan #10 Michigan take on Northwestern #14 Northwestern in another Big Ten matchup. Northwestern is still down 63% on the season but can erase that entire deficit with a $8B win. Michigan, on the other hand, hope to continue their slow climb after early season defeat with a $547M win.

A disastrous week for the universities, lots of big losses with a nice $31B profit for the sports book.

Week 10 Results

Alabama Alabama enters the leaderboard for the first time, and approaches the top 25 after easily handling LSU #8 LSU. The Tide took home just $53M but their slow rise has worked and they now sit on the edge of the top 25. LSU drops three spots out of the top 10.
Duke #10 Duke upset Miami Miami to win a staggering $6.10B and jump eight spots to #2, Miami's season continues to be disappointing with a $76M loss.
Pittsburgh #24 Pittsburgh took down Virginia #3 Virginia in another ACC upset. Pitt jumps 11 spots with their $1.52B win while Virginia slips, but stays in the top 5 despite losing $9.16B
Notre Dame #1 Notre Dame keeps their crown and handles Northwestern #5 Northwestern to win nearly $5B. The Irish have grown their endowment considerably, passing $40B this week. Northwestern stays in the top 10, but donates $5.80B to Vegas.
Georgia Georgia downs upstart Kentucky #2 Kentucky to enter the top 25. For the first time this season, the threshold to enter the top 25 is less than a billion dollars.

Week 11 Big Bets

Clemson Clemson has an opportunity to enter the top 25 for the first time this season when they take on Boston College #15 Boston College. The Tigers stand to gain just $40M, but BC has a chance to win $8B and make the top 5 should they pull off the upset.
Northwestern #7 Northwestern opens as underdogs against unranked Iowa Iowa and the Wildcats can once again wipe out all of their losses with a $9.56B win. Iowa is coming off a loss and can take home $53M.
Ohio State #10 Ohio State travel to East Lansing for a date with Michigan State #16 Michigan State. The Buckeyes hope to take home nearly $1B and break even again on the season while the Spartans hope to take home $1.65B of their own.
Oklahoma #21 Oklahoma and Oklahoma State Oklahoma State are ready for Bedlam, where anything can happen. Oklahoma is back in the top 25 and are heavily favored, only tanding to gain about $70M. The Cowboys can win big, with a $649M win to repair some previous damage.
Liberty #25 Liberty has managed to hang in the top 25 and have a chance to win $7.21B this week against Virginia #5 Virginia. The Cavaliers hope to hold their position in the top 5 with a $200M win after last week's defeat.

Through Week 9, the /CFB Sports Book up $29.74B

One of the best week for the sports book so far, taking home over $18 Billion, those poor, poor kids.

Week 9 Results

Kentucky #6 Kentucky upset unranked Missouri Missouri to win a cool $10.31B and jump four spots to #2, leaving only Notre Dame left to pass in the rankings. Kentucky looks to win big again this weekend
Georgia Southern Georgia Southern had an impressive win over Appalachian State Appalachian State sending the Eagles onto our top return on investment leaderboard. Georgia Southern took home $108M, more than doubling their existing endowment.
Northwestern #8 Northwestern remained predictably unpredictable with a win over Wisconsin Wisconsin. Northwestern is once again in the black for the season with a $5B win. Wisconsin slips farther down the rankings with a half a billion dollar loss
Washington State #21 Washington State traveled to the Bay Area to take on Stanford #4 Stanford, and in a high scoring affair the Cougs won big, taking home close to $900M and jumping eight spots to #13. Stanford's rough streak continues, with a $7.87B loss and dropping to #7.
California California upset Washington #25 Washington in another Pac-12 affair. Cal jumps straight into the top 15 with a $1.77B win while the Huskies slip out of the top 25 for the third time this season.
Boston College Boston College entered the top 25 on Friday, winning $734M in their upset of Miami Miami. The Hurricanes lost $152M in a disappointing season (from an economic perspective).
Pittsburgh Pittsburgh enters the top 25 after taking down Duke #5 Duke! Pitt takes home $460M to jump 12 spots to #24, while Duke's winnings have been wiped out by a $4.36B loss; all is not over yet, as the Blue Devils still are clinging to a top 10 spot.
Syracuse Syracuse wraps up an ACC-heavy week with their upset win over NC State #23 NC State in a game that saw nearly 100 points. The Orange wipe out nearly all of their losses so far with a $410M win, while NC State sinks out of the top 25.

Week 10 Big Bets

Northwestern #5 Northwestern's roller coaster of a season continues this week, as the Wildcats take on Notre Dame #1 Notre Dame in one of our biggest matchups yet. The winner of this game will likely* (see below game) be #1, with the Irish hoping to take home an additional $5.70B, or Northwestern in an upset claiming $15.36B
Kentucky #2 Kentucky can claim the crown this week - they stand to gain what would be a record win of $27.88B if they can Georgia Georgia. Georgia hopes to repair some damage with a $119M win.
Alabama Alabama sees their first meaningful game this week, as far as this poll is concerned. Despite a very slow, methodical start, the Tide are only 8 spots out of the top 25, and a $67M win over LSU #8 LSU would help. Things are a little more exciting the Tigers, who seek to take home $13.49B with a win.
California #12 California hopes to continue their meteoric rise with a win over their neighbor in the ranking Washington State #13 Washington State. Who would have thought this would be a top Pac-12 matchup, but here we are.

Another very modest week, a small $2B profit for Las Vegas, just enough to offset last week

Week 13 Results

Apple Cup - Washington State #11 Washington State fell at the hands of rival Washington Washington in the snow on Friday at the Apple Cup, but the Cougars remain in the top 15 despite a $1.88B loss. The Huskies enter the top 25 again with a $420M win
Paul Bunyan's Axe - Minnesota Minnesota had the biggest climb this week, jumping 17 spots to #22 defeating Wisconsin Wisconsin. The Golden Gophers end their 14-year losing streak and take home $640M, to round their endowment to an even billion.
The Game - The Game was a little one-sided this year, with Ohio State Ohio State routing rival Michigan Michigan to take home $3.85B and enter the top 5 for the first time. Michigan drops out of the top 5, losing nearly $5B.
Texas A&M Texas A&M took 7 overtimes, but defeated rival LSU #12 LSU for the first time since 1995 to win $186M, while the Tigers slipped 2 spots but remain in the top 15.
Oklahoma #18 Oklahoma handles West Virginia West Virginia in a classic Big 12 affair to win $410M before their rematch with Texas.
Notre Dame #1 Notre Dame ended their regular season with a perfect record with a defeat of USC USC. Almost certainly playoff bound, the Fighting Irish are going to have to wait over a month for their next action

Week 14 Big Bets

MAC MAC Championship Game

Northern Illinois #88 Northern Illinois Huskies vs. Buffalo #18 Buffalo Bulls

The Bull's season is impressive, more than doubling their starting endowment in key upsets to earn more than $674M before clinching a spot in the MAC Championship Game. Their opponent: Northern Illinois a team that has lost 67% of their endowment but have everything to play for this Friday with a chance to wipe out their losses in an upset.
Current Line: Buffalo -175
With a Win: Buffalo: $1.33B Northern Illinois: $24.62M

Pac-12 Pac-12 Championship Game

Utah #29 Utah Utes vs. Washington #19 Washington Huskies

The Utes had a slow start to the season, dropping two of their first four including a loss to Washington, but Utah has been red hot since then, winning seven of their last eight. Utah's early season losses made it difficult to have positive cash flow, but they are down just 41% with a chance to enter the black this week. Similarly, the Washington Huskies season started off with a dud against Auburn in Atlanta. Since then, the Huskies have ebbed and flowed their way to a Pac-12 Championship and despite losing over 66% of their endowment, have a chance to win some big cash in the Championship and a bowl game.
Current Line: Washington -200
With a Win: Utah: $540M Washington: $282M

ACC ACC Championship Game

Clemson #23 Clemson Tigers vs. Pittsburgh #12 Pittsburgh Panthers

Despite Pitt being ranked higher in our simulation, these two teams have had opposite seasons. Clemson has calmly worked their way through their schedule to enter Championship week at 12-0, while Pittsburgh has been predictably unpredictable including dropping their season finale. However, things have happened before when unranked Pitt takes on #2 Clemson, so don't count chaos out just yet.
Current Line: Clemson -4625
With a Win: Clemson: $9.95M Pittsburgh: $32.05B

Big 12 Big 12 Championship Game

Texas #3 Texas Longhorns vs. Oklahoma #15 Oklahoma Sooners

Are they back? We will have to see! In a rematch of the Red River Showdown, a thrilling affair where the Longhorns won 48-45, Oklahoma seeks revenge and a possible date with the playoffs. After another early season disappointment against Maryland, Texas has been strong, taking home over $5.5B to grow their endowment 50%. The Sooners' only loss wiped out their earnings for the season, but they will enter the black once again if they can defeat their rival.
Current Line: Oklahoma -300
With a Win: Texas: $20.03B Oklahoma: $271.13M

Big Ten Big Ten Championship Game

Northwestern #2 Northwestern Wildcats vs. Ohio State #4 Ohio State Buckeyes

Speaking of roller coasters, have you heard of the Wildcats? Despite early season losses, Northwestern has been one of the overall best investments this season, taking home over $15B of profit, more than doubling their original endowment. And then we have the Buckeyes, who except for some pesky Boilermakers and scary Terrapins have had a perfect season and have nearly doubled their endowment capping the regular season off with a $3.85B win over rival Michigan. They may have a CFP spot on the line as well, should they defeat Northwestern.
Current Line: Ohio State -555
With a Win: Northwestern: $56.14B Ohio State: $742.72M

SEC SEC Championship Game

Georgia #20 Georgia Bulldogs vs. Alabama #25 Alabama Crimson Tide

This game was set up to be as fair as possible, but the journey to the top would be most difficult to schools like these. Both Georgia and Alabama started the season with smaller endowments and were heavily favored in almost every game, meaning that a 12-0 Alabama has only grown their endowment by 20.86%. As far as investments go, a 20% return in a little over three months is nothing to scoff at. Maybe some ETF's in the future will feature the Crimson Tide. Georgia would love to play upset and secure a spot in the CFP.
Current Line: Alabama -485
With a Win: Georgia: $2.31B Alabama: $85.10M

American AAC Championship Game

Memphis #102 Memphis Tigers vs. UCF #38 UCF Knights

Central Florida had many of the same issues as the Alabama's and Clemson's of the world, heavily favored in all games. However, the Knights also started out with a small endowment of just $156M. Another undefeated thus far has more than doubled their endowment, bringing the total to $359M. A win here and a trip to an NY6 may be enough for the Knights to crack the top 25, perhaps they even sacrificed their prize QB to make the odds even more favorable for growth. And then we have Memphis, the lowest ranked team to make a championship game. Memphis has shed 95% of their endowment, and hope to do some repair work in the championship game.
Current Line: UCF -215
With a Win: Memphis: $8.22M UCF: $83.39M

Mountain West Mountain West Championship Game

Fresno State #62 Fresno State Bulldogs vs. Boise State #59 Boise State Broncos

Now we head west for a battle of 10-2 teams. Boise State's season has been pretty much a wash, despite winning 10 games. The Broncos are down 9% on the season but with two games left, they have a chance to be in the black. The Bulldogs have fared a little worse, down 42% on the season. As underdogs for the Championship, they may be on their way to repairing previous damage.
Current Line: Boise State -140
With a Win: Fresno State: $51.17M Boise State: $32.16M

Sun Belt Sun Belt Championship Game

Louisiana #85 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns vs. Appalachian State #78 Appalachian State Mountaineers

In a year of multiple Bulldogs, Tigers, and Huskies in the championship games, the Sun Belt's inaugural championship game will be played between two of the more unique names in college football. After nearly knocking off Penn State to start the season, the Mountaineers host this game as favorites, hoping to wipe out some of the 60% of damage to their original $95M endowment. The Ragin' Cajuns have more to gain - they can earn back much of their 85% decrease in endowment this season.
Current Line: Appalachian State -905
With a Win: Louisiana: $86.62M Appalachian State: $2.09M

Conference USA Conference USA Championship Game

UAB #35 UAB Blazers vs. #84 Middle Tennessee Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders

In a rematch of a game that took place just a few days ago, UAB will seek revenge against the Blue Raiders. UAB has been one of the better performing G5 teams throughout the season. Despite losing last week, they are one of the few teams that have still made a profit on the season. Should they exact revenge, they'll take some more profit with them. MTSU is just one loss away from breaking even on the season. If they want to recoup their losses, a win will be necessary on Saturday.
Current Line: Middle Tennessee -140
With a Win: UAB: $262.77M MTSU: $10.51M
Additionally, the following teams are playing in makeup games:
Stanford/California , Norfolk State/Liberty, Drake/Iowa State, Marshall/Virginia Tech, ECU/NC State, Akron/South Carolina
