Tonight RedAlertWagers.com and The MAC doubled up in the NFL yesterday, our NFL MAJOR MOVE ALERT ON - (MINNESOTA VIKINGS +8) + RED ALERT PLAY ON Seattle -2.5 won easily!! Tonight The MAC has a NCAAB MAJOR MOVE ALERT - (UL - LAFAYETTE +8 vs APPALACHIAN ST -8) + A EARLY INFO ALABAMA BOWL PLAY (JAN 06) - (MIAMI OHIO +14 vs UL LAFAYETTE -14) as well as a Full Red Alert Card of NFL, CBB, & NBA Expert Sports Picks!
The MAC'S Back Room Action on last night's College Basketball game, Northwestern Wildcats +9.5 was a exactly what it we called it, BACK ROOM ACTION, a close cover that one could almost call a "FIX" as the Minnesota Golden Gophers won this game by exactly 9 as a -9.5 favorite, letting the Wildcats cover by the hook! Roland's been playing and fading these teams for years, knowing when to lay or take points with teams like the Bears, Gaels, Bulldogs, and Huskies has aggrandized THE MAC's reputation for his college hoops Back Room Info Plays. Final score 68-77, the Northwestern Wildcats covered, another quiet game that produced the profits we expected. We pride our action by bringing the results that has the people recommending THE MAC'S ATS COLLEGE BASKETBALL PICKS, making him one of the most venerable sources for expert college basketball picks against the spread, and lionizing RedAlertWagers.com in and around sportsbooks and casinos!
When you follow The MAC, your'e in good hands, Red Alert Expert Basketball Picks have been atomic all year. Last night, Mac McGuillaman had plenty of hoops games to choose from and released a Late Info Play on the Purdue Boilermakers +3. MAC may have picked the ugliest NCAAB game this year, and unfortunately The Mac eventually has to have a loss to get a win, Purdue was a lump of shit dressed as a basketball team last night, and the Illinois Fighting Ilini are not as good as that game made them out to be!! The final score was 37-63 despicable, RedAlertWagers.com has a make up play that will rock the betting public tonight, as we are poised to rip down a NCAAB HUSH MONEY PLAY (JAN 06) - (NORFOLK STATE -1 vs COPPIN STATE +1) TONIGHT!! The MAC will be on the right side of this game because making these calls is just what The Mac does.
The MAC'S Top Rated CBB predictions, Red Alert Plays, & OUR EXCLUSIVE COLLEGE BASKETBALL CALLS get it done, and that's just what it is. We will be getting it in the right way tonight with some NCAAB MAJOR MOVE ACTION - (UL - LAFAYETTE +8 vs APPALACHIAN ST -8) + The MAC is moving heavy with a ALABAMA BOWL EARLY INFO PLAY - (MIAMI OHIO +14 vs UL LAFAYETTE -14) and it goes without saying that we have been cleaning up all week! The MAC doesn't go where the game is, he puts his nuts right on the line to bring you where the money is, and tonight will be no different! This is the type of action that makes THE MAC's Top Rated & Premium Sports Picks like no others!
THE MAC is not only loaded with NCAA gifts from the odds-makers this year, and make no mistake, he very much is anticipating the outcome of his Back Room Info & Hoops Hush Money Play, but The Mac has his attention focused on The NFL Playoffs.

Some Friendly Last Minute Bracket Advice

This is really only for one group of people. Those who know very little about college basketball who only watch games in March and who are also only interested in being in the running for winning their pool. If you just want to have fun or look like the smartest person in the pool, do not read any further. Finally, nothing is set in stone and anything can happen in a one-and-done tournament. That is the rule to follow no matter what.
Don't overthink the early rounds.
The first-round games are worth one point. Unless you have a team going to the Sweet 16, go ahead and pick a few upsets without fear. BUT, here is the caveat, you don't want to pick, say, Duke losing in the second round, no matter that it's happened a few times recently. Your main goal to win your pool is not lose it this first weekend. That means, you need to make sure as many of your Elite Eight and, hopefully, all your Final Four teams survive the first weekend.
If, say, Duke loses in round 2, MOST people's brackets will suffer along with you. A few folks will gain something, but you just can't account for that. This is all about giving yourself the best chance to win. And pick Duke to at least the Elite Eight is "Vegas" bet.
Don't carry your upsets too far
Everyone wants to be the one who picked VCU to make the Final Four. Don't be that person. By the time the craziness of that first weekend ends, teams head home for a few days, gather themselves, etc., the top seeds/better teams in the Sweet 16 tend to win. And, by the Elite Eight, it's usually one of the teams seeded 1-6, that make it. The lowest seed to ever make the Elite Eight is a 12, and it happened once. On average, three of the four No. 1 seeds make it to the Elite Eight each year. This is also when the points really start ramping up.
1, 2, 3, 4 — it's that simple
Check this out. Stay with the top seeds and don't go too crazy avoiding the top 2 seeds in each region. That being said, the four No. 1s have only done it once. But, since the field went to 64, 18 of the 30 champions have been 1 seeds.
Pick Kentucky to win
I am sure people will harp on this a little. But I am convinced, considering UK is such a huge favorite, you should not pick someone else in order to capitalize on them being upset. Some years, I would agree. But there has never been a bigger favorite. And, for me, you are better off riding UK than be kicking yourself for NOT picking them when you had a chance to finish in the money if you had. There is way too many variables in this tournament. But Kentucky winning is, by the odds, probably the safest way to not be regretting your champion. Also, like with my upset analogy, the vast majority of people will pick UK. So, chances are, the team you are competing against for the money, also picked UK. It's just playing the odds.
Good luck!

Amiibo Smash Tournament

There's alot of information here, but If you want to know how to run your own amiibo Tournaments, Its all here. So living in a rural area, I don't have a lot of opportunities to go to these Amiibo tournaments that I keep hearing about. So I found a way to make my own. First, I bought ALL of the amiibo for Super Smash Bros that are available. At the time of this writing, it's 53. I spent a little over $700 to get all of them. Most of them were bought on-line, used, at reduced prices, and over seas. Since the amiibo aren't region locked, it doesn't matter where you get them from, they all work. I trained all of them up to lv 50 and gave them stats and perks that would best help them in a fight. Once they were all here, the real work began. All amiibo have a number in which they were released. Mario is 1., Peach is 2., and so on. The numbers can be found on Nintendo's official site for Amiibo. So I put all of the amiibo in order from top to bottom on the left hand side of a large board, and in the same order from left to right on the bottom of the board. From there I was able to make a grid that would let me track Wins and Losses of all the Amiibo fights. The squares on the grid that would line up a fight that was, for instance, Mario vs Mario I would just color it in black. I didn't have any of the Amiibo "fight" their own self, and I wasn't going to buy a second set of Amiibo just to do that, so they only fight the other amiibo. So now i have this huge grid that is 58 squares X 58 squares (I made this big enough to support ALL the fighters in Super Smash Bros 3DS/WiiU) And on the side and bottom of this huge grid are the names of the amiibo. The Contenders on the left, and the Challengers on the bottom. 58 Fighters will fight every fighter in Smash except their own self. Thats 57 fights for each 58 of the fighters. 57x58= 3,306 total fights. This was going to take a while. At the time of this writing only 53 amiibo were available. So those 53 had to fight the other 52 amiibo taht I had. 53x52= 2,756 fights. It took about 2 months to get this far from start to finish, and as new amiibo came out, i trained them to lv 50 and fought them against all the other amiibo I had. Not only does the new Amiibo have to fight all of the current Amiibo I have, but a second set of fights had to take place because the old amiibo all had to fight against the new addition to complete THEIR own stats. So now that all of the fights are finished, I can count the wins, and start giving these amiibo a Rank (of sorts) so they can be placed into a tournament bracket like the NCAA!!! So, I counted from left to right how many wins each amiibo had. This gives me my "Home" wins. But I also thought, well if I'm counting wins for Mario, and he has a loss from Link, shouldn't that count as a Win for Link? Hell ya it should!! So I started counting from bottom to top all the Losses on each amiibo, and this gave me my "Away" Wins.
Recap: count Wins from left to right = Home Wins count
Losses from Bottom to Top = Away Wins
I added the Home Wins and Away Wins together and this was able to tell me what Rank they were. The more wins, the better the rank. So with a better Rank/record I'm able to seed them in a Tournament. I'm seeding my amiibo to compete in a tournament that you technically can place bets on with knowing the odds of winning and everything! The tournament I came up with will support 32 fighters. But with 58 amiibo I had to comeup with a fair way to give the other 26 amiibo a fighting chance to play in the tournament. So i decided that 16 of the best Amiibo will be in the tournament, and the rest will have to fight for the remaining 16 spots.
see sec 2. Placement - of the rules below.
Tournament Rules and Ranking:
Sec. 1 Tie Breakers
Ties from the seeding fights are decided FIRST by who has the most HOME wins. Then by who has beaten the current highest ranked fighter. If the amiibo involved have all beaten (or lost to) the same top ranked fighter, they will check the second highest ranked fighter, and so on. If there is still a tie, there will be a Sudden Death Match involving ALL fighters that are currently tied for a single rank (Max of 8 fighters per Sudden Death Match on WiiU or 4 fighters on 3DS). The first fighter to get knocked out takes the lowest rank of the group, and so on. If, in the unlikely case, there are more than 8 fighters(wiiU) or 4 fighters(3DS) that are tied for a single rank, they will be split into two equal (if possible) groups. The Winners of each group will have another Sudden Death Match to see who gets top Rank. The Loser of that fight will take the rank below the winner. This will continue until the remaining fighters can fit into an 8(WiiU), or 4(3DS)-player Sudden Death Match, and play will continue as described above.
Sec. 2 Placement
The top 16 Ranked fighters earn an automatic spot in the Smash Tournament, and their position in Rank is only compromised when a lesser fighter is re-ranked. *see sec. 3. The bottom 42 seeded fighters will fight ONE match vs their seeded counter part (17 vs 58, 18 vs 57, 19 vs 56, etc) After all of those fights are complete, the TOP 11 seeded winners will take a spot in the Smash Tournament. The following 10 winners will have one last fight vs THEIR seeded counterpart (highest rank vs lowest rank, second highest vs second lowest) for the last 5 spots in the Smash Tournament.
Sec. 3 Re-fighting for new Rank (to help the tourney change and remain fresh)
Fighters ranked 50-58 who get a spot in the Smash Tournament will be eligible to re-fight either its Home OR Away fights. Fighters ranked 40-58 who get to the second round of the Smash Tournament will be eligible to re-fight either its Home OR Away fights. Fighters ranked 17-58 who get to the Final 4 of the Smash Tournament will be eligible to re-fight either its Home OR Away fights. If a Fighter chooses to re-fight their Home or Away fights, it must fight ALL of the Home or Away Fights, and record ANY new Wins or Losses they get in the process, NO EXCEPTIONS!!! Even if this means it brings the fighter LOWER in rank.
Fighters ranked 17-58 who GET to the CHAMPIONSHIP Round will be able to re-fight either their Home OR Away LOSSES WITHOUT having to re-fight and risk any current Wins they hold.
Fighters ranked 17-58 who WIN the Smash Tournament will be able to re-fight ALL of their Home AND Away LOSSES WITHOUT having to re-fight and risk any current Wins they hold.
Sec. 4 Loose ends
ALL other Fighters' who Wins/Losses were adjusted from the re-ranking process will be issued new Rank, if necessary, after ties are settled. *see sec. 1 Any new Rank that ANY fighter gets in this process, EVEN IF IT IS LOWER, will be applied and cannot change until another re-ranking process. THIS PROCESS IS NOT MANDATORY if a fighter is eligible, only optional.
End.
So now I can run an Amiibo tournament at my house, on the same scale that any larger gathering can. I've built a 4' x 4' table that the Statues can move around on to show its progress in the tournament, complete with a painted Smash logo in the center. And when I finish a tournament, depending on who won or how far in the tourney some amiibo get, I have a whole new list of fights I can run. It's a never ending loop of being able to get replay out of my Smash Bros game and Amiibo.
When I have friends over, they bring their amiibo and can put them up against the best or worst I have to offer, and even put money on a tournament I'm running. It's a fun way to get the most out of these tiny little money eaters.

League of Madness Championship (64 Team Bracket Mirroring NCAA Tournament)

The finals of the League of Madness are here! I made a bracket with 64 League team and mirrored it to the current NCAA tournament. What a crazy run it has been. The betting odds on what was the final four would have been 100,000 to one or more. In the finals we have 50% of what would have been expected. The last game will feature #1 Jin Air Green Wings (#2 overall) vs. #2 Qiao Gu Reapers(#8 overall). The most improbable run of the tournament was #10 Master3 (#38 Overall) making it all the way to the final four. The game starts at 6:19 PST! While two of the work horses are still alive here are some of the biggest upsets of each round and my summary of the games. Overall seeding and up to date bracket can be found here.
Second Round '#2 SKT T1 (2-3) vs. #15 Cougar eSports (3-2) – After Faker and company came down with food poisoning they put in Korean AI intermediate bots to prevent forfeit. Unfortunately the mighty CBLoL’ers were able to barely conquer the bots.
Third Round '#2 KT Rolster (2-3) vs. #7 Unicorns of Love (3-2) – After Faker gave restaurant recommendations to Ssumday he was unable to carry. Also, the return of Diamond prompted an incredible comeback and with the amazing EU lane swaps, UoL was able to squeak by on e of the tournament favorites. KT Rolster continues to struggle to make it past the second round of the tournament.
Sweet 16 The only upset of the sweet sixteen is all the games were close.
Elite 8 '#1 AHQ e-sports (2-3) vs #10 Master3 (3-2) – Yolo went full YOLO out of the jungle picking Talon, Draven and Akali in three wins. Westdoor went on full tilt after Twisted Fate, Zed, Diana, and Fizz were all banned due to in game bugs.
Final 4 What a blow out these games were!

Questions Answers
What are your thoughts on data-driven metrics for teacher evaluation? Do you think a system that accurately reflects teacher value could ever be created, or will it always be plagued by perverse incentives (teaching to the test, neglecting certain types of students, etc)? There are certainly cases where applying objective measures badly is worse than not applying them at all, and education may well be one of those.
In my job out of college as a consultant, one of my projects involved visiting public school classrooms in Ohio and talking to teachers, and their view was very much that teaching-to-the-test was constraining them in some unhelpful ways.
But this is another topic that requires a book- or thesis-length treatment to really evaluate properly. Maybe I'll write a book on it someday.
Can you prove whether gun control would make America safer? It's a tricky problem, statistically. The issue is that while gun ownership rates could plausibly be a cause of fatal crimes and accidents, it can also be a reaction to it, i.e. people purchase guns because they feel unsafe.
I'm not saying that the issue is intrinsically inscrutable. But it's something that more requires a PhD-thesis-level treatment than a blog post to really add much insight, I think.
Nate, do you think you can come up with a system for college football that is better than the BCS? Yes, it's called a playoff. Ideally an 8- or 12- or 16-team playoff, I think.
The irony is that of all college and professional sports, NCAA football is the one that might most necessitate a playoff because 12 games just isn't enough to tell you very much -- especially when many/most are played against mediocre competition. If instead a team needs to win 3 or 4 games against top-flight opponents to win the national championship, you can say with a bit more confidence that they're deserving.
What the biggest abuse of statistics that people aren't aware of? Overfitting, which I discuss quite extensively in my book, is a way more pernicious problem than most people realize.
What's been the strangest experience you've had due to your sudden fame? When I was in Mexico last week, I got recognized at the top of the Sun Pyramid at Teotihuacan, which I'm pretty sure really is a sign of the Apocalypse.
What software do you use to analyze your data? I use Stata for anything hardcore and Excel for the rest.
Be honest. How much did you enjoy getting the ire of pundits (not the few who actually critiqued your method, models, or assumptions, but those who just dismissed your work wholesale)? Was there a part of you that wrung your hands together, laughed a tad manically, and egged them on to continue, since all they were doing was bringing more attention to your work and the lack of rigor in their approach? At some point in the last few weeks of the election, I guess I decided to lean into the upside outcome a little bit in terms of pushing back at the pundits in my public appearances -- as opposed to emphasizing the uncertainty in the model, as I had for most of the year. (Nothing about the model design itself changed -- just how I tended to talk about it.)
Stupid poker analogy: part of playing well is in maximizing the amount of value you get from a hand in the event that things go well, in addition to mitigating your losses if they don't.
Are you concerned that during future elections, the accuracy of your predictions will lull readers into a mindset of "it has been foretold, therefore I needn't bother to vote"? It worries me a bit. There is probably a danger zone in which a candidate's supporters take for granted that he'll win the election and so don't turn out to vote, but the election is nevertheless close enough for him to lose. That may have happened in the Democratic primary in New Hampshire in 2008, for example. There were a lot of reasons why Hillary beat her polls, but one contributing factor may have been that a lot of independent voters who would otherwise have voted for Barack chose to vote in the GOP primary instead since it seemed more competitive.
Could you please address some of the biggest misconceptions of what it is you do and can do? A lot of "Silver is a wizard who can calculate everything" jokes have emerged, as you have grown in popularity, but often so at the cost of understanding what statistics are actually about. More often than not, people overrate the reliability of predictions in systems with a lot of complexity. There are certainly exceptions, and presidential elections are almost certainly one of them, but it's a bit weird/ironic that I'm known for one of the exceptional cases.
At the end of the day, what would it take for a 3rd party candidate to seriously challenge for, or even win, the presidency? Was Perot a once in a lifetime phenomenon, or is there a possibility of something outside the 2 party system? Historically, periods of greater polarization are associated with better performance for third-party candidates, so the chances of a successful independent campaign are probably higher than average. However, that still might mean there's 3 or 5 percent chance of an independent candidate winning the 2016 election as opposed to a 1 or 2 percent chance. You might need a perfect storm where (i) Obama is perceived as really having screwed up and (ii) the Republicans nominate someone terrible and (iii) someone VERY talented runs and takes his campaign very seriously and (iv) then gets a few breaks in the Electoral College, etc. None of those individual steps are impossible, but the odds against the parlay are pretty long.
Are you ever going to finish your Burrito Bracket Project? Perhaps I can convince Penguin that my next book should be a 256-taqueria burrito bracket with entries from all across the country.
Last month, the quant-blogger mathbabe took your book to task for confusing cause and effect. She said, "We didn’t have a financial crisis because of a bad model or a few bad models. We had bad models because of a corrupt and criminally fraudulent financial system ... this is not just wrong, it’s maliciously wrong." She then claimed you were "a man who deeply believes in experts," which is where your book went wrong. Could you address this criticism and defend your conclusions? (full post: Link to mathbabe.org. I'd encourage you to read my book and ask whether she fairly interprets my hypothesis. I don't think she does. The financial crisis chapter is quite explicit about asserting that the credit ratings agencies were not just stupid, but also a bunch of dirty rotten scoundrels, so to speak. And the book is generally quite skeptical about the role played by "experts".
At what point did you feel the 2012 Presidential Election ceased being a 'close race'? 2012 was a reasonably close election. Not 2000 close, obviously, but closer than average.
do you think other media entities who maintained it was until the end were simply not in agreement with you, or kept towing that line to keep ratings up? The distinction that got lost a bit was between closeness and uncertainty. If a baseball game is 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th inning and you've got Papelbon on the mound or whatever, it has definitely been a "close" game but not one in which the outcome is in all that much doubt.
Also, what did you view as the biggest missteps during the election? Less abstractly: when it became clear (i) Romney's "momentum" from Denver had begun to recede and (ii) that the final major news event of the campaign (Hurricane Sandy) was working to Obama's benefit, some of the uncertainty was removed.
In a recent profile, you stated you wished not to be known as a "gay statistician" but as a statistician who happens to be gay. Isn't that a bit naive in today's political and social climate? Don't you think that whether you like it or not, people will treat you differently because you are gay and that your identity as a gay man cannot be limited to your private sexuality? As someone so ubiquitous now in the public sphere, should you be addressing issues in your writing that are related to gay rights as much as baseball? It's a complicated issue that maybe doesn't lend itself so well to the reddit treatment.
My quick-and-dirty view is that people are too quick to affiliate themselves with identity groups of all kinds, as opposed to carving out their own path in life.
Obviously, there is also the issue of how one is perceived by others. Living in New York in 2013 provides one with much a much greater ability to exercise his independence than living in Uganda -- or for that matter living in New York forty years ago. So perhaps there's a bit of a "you didn't build that" quality in terms of taking for granted some of the freedoms that I have now.
And/but/also, one of the broader lessons in the history of how gay people have been treated is that perhaps we should empower people to make their own choices and live their own lives, and that we should be somewhat distrustful about the whims and tastes and legal constraints imposed by society.
Were the Romney campaign predictions a result of bad polling, analysis, or just group think? Groupthink and perverse incentives were the causes; to the extent their polling or analysis was bad, it flowed from that.
Which do you find more frustrating to analyze, politics or sports? Politics. I don't think its close. Between the pundits and the partisans, you're dealing with a lot of very delusional people. And sports provides for much more frequent reality checks. If you were touting how awesome Notre Dame was, for example*, you got very much slapped back into reality last night. In politics, you can go on being delusional for years at a time.
Full disclosure: I said in a NYT video yesterday that I'd bet Notre Dame against the spread.
As an Econ major, how did you gain your statistics background? Mostly from trying to win my fantasy baseball league and my NCAA tournament pool.
For aspiring applied statisticians, what do you think are the best and hottest new skills to learn and add to one's resume? Maybe this is too vague, but I think the most important thing is just to lessen the amount of book-learnin' that you do and start to play around with some data sets instead.
if you write your own, how do you feel about making it open source, like Princeton Election Consortium does? I'd certainly like to aim to increase the level of disclosure at 538 going forward. Sometimes what happens is that I have best intentions to write a super detailed, 5000-word methodology post, and then some senate candidate does or says something stupid, and I get caught up in the news cycle and it gets forgotten about. Which is a pretty lame excuse, I know. At the same time, 538 is a commercial business and the ability to license proprietary intellectual property is a fairly big part of how I make my living, so the disclosure would probably stop short of outright releasing source code or my database in most cases.
Nate, do you think most of the popular news sources (cable, network, newspapers) intentionally overlooked the data analysis from you and those like you in order to hype up the 2012 election? News organizations tend to have incentives to "root for the story". Part of what were were saying for much of the campaign -- both at different stages of the general election and perhaps even more emphatically in the end-stage of the primary when Romney pretty much had things wrapped up -- is that the outcome had become fairly certain. So that creates a bit of a culture clash.
How would you fix baseball Hall of Fame voting? I'd probably lower the threshold for players getting dropped from the ballot, from 5 percent to 2 percent or so, or have some sort of a sliding scale where the threshold depends on how many times a player's name has appeared. It now seems plausible that Alan Trammell will eventually get in, for example, and it's a little weird that Lou Whitaker got dropped from the ballot years ago when he might otherwise be gathering some support along with Trammell right now.
Is it correct to assume that sabermetrics will never work in football and basketball like they do in baseball? And if so, is that because baseball is much more of an individual sport, or are there other reasons as well? Well, I guess I'd put it like this: statistical analysis may not get you as far in basketball* or (especially) football as it does in baseball. But it still probably gets you much further than in most industries.
Is sabermetrics useful in soccer? Traditionally, soccer leagues just kept track of goals and bookings, and there's only so much value you can mine from that data. But I know that the EPL and MLS are starting to track all other sorts of statistics as well: tackles, passes, time of possession, etc. Would be interesting to explore that at some point. I suspect there is some low-hanging fruit since the soccer culture (even more than in most American sports) tends not to be very data-friendly.
Your ability to predict election outcomes has lead to your work moving election betting markets... have you ever been tempted to profit via these markets? Tempted, yes, but sometimes resisting temptation is a good thing.
Given that Barry Bonds will likely be declined a first-ballot visit to the Hall of Fame tomorrow, is there any way to look at numbers from the steroid era (both for those implicated, and those that just happened to play in the era) such that they show actual performance? Essentially, can we actually make any assessments of numbers from the steroid era? If we had a list of exactly who used steroids and when, you could do a lot of clever things. But we don't, and the sample of alleged and actual steroids users is liable to be nonrandom and biased in various ways.
Would you vote for Barry Bonds or Roger Clemens to get into the Hall of Fame? Edit: Spelling Yes, I think, in large part because the split-the-baby solutions to steroids use are hard to apply in practice. I might use steroids use as a tiebreaker for otherwise very close cases (and I think McGwire, Sosa and Palmeiro all fall into that category). But I don't think people should pretend that we can put each player's stats through some kind of algorithm and come up with "steroid-neutral" statistics. We just don't know all that much about who did and didn't use steroids, and when.
Very simple: Do you prefer Chicago or New York, and why? In terms of quality of life, it's very close. But New York is a lot better for someone working in "the media", and probably also more broadly for most people who are super ambitious about their careers. One of the big cultural differences here -- very much for better and worse -- is that people are often very career-driven well into their 40s, 50s, 60s.
Do you believe the theory that Anonymous stopped Karl Rove from stealing the election via hacking electronic voting machines? No.
Please also include information about your presentation tools (e.g. how do you create the graphics you use on your site, the charts and tables, etc.) Most of the one-off charts are just done in Excel. It isn't that hard to make Excel charts look unExcellish if you take a few minutes and get away from the awful default settings. For anything more advanced, like the stuff that appears in the right-hand column at 538, I'm relying on the help of the NYT's awesome team of interactive journalists.
All the karma should go to Mike Bostock and D3 Link to d3js.org. Yes, definitely. The New York Times guys really are the very best at the world at this. Part of that is because they really are journalists in addition to being programmers and/or graphic artists: the goal is to communicate complex information clearly and accurately, and not just to make something cool or pretty. There should be a Pulitzer category for this stuff.

If you have a chance of winning your NCAA pool, check for hedging opportunities.

For most NCAA tournament pools, the final four represents a time where you can fairly easily determine who will win the pool based on one of eight outcomes occurring.
Using a little simple math, you can calculate what your payout will be for each of the 8 outcomes and check to see if it is worth placing a futures bet on any of the teams to lock in a payout.
Since Kentucky is so heavily favored this year, there are ample opportunities for hedging given the right circumstances. For simplicity, let's say that if Kentucky wins you win your pool and get $1,000, whereas if any other team wins the tournament you get $0. Some might like that bet, but others might want to guarantee a payout. Here are the current odds for the other teams winning the tournament:
To equally hedge, you'd make the following bets:
After doing so, you are guaranteed $600 if Kentucky loses, and $605 if Kentucky wins ($1,000 pool winnings minus your bets).
Or, if you prefer to gamble a bit more, you can skew your bets or wait until the championship game. Suppose Kentucky and OSU advance to the final and the spread is -5 for Kentucky. You can bet $500 on OSU to hedge your bet and guarantee roughly $500 (minus the juice) and have a chance that you win $1,500 if Kentucky wins by less than 5 points.
For gamblers this is obvious, but most people filling out brackets don't think along these lines so I thought it might be a helpful reminder.

This Week in Terriers Hockey - On To LoHell edition

The latest in an effort to briefly recap the week that was and look ahead to the coming weekend's games, as well as check in with what people are saying about the Terriers.

The Week That Was

That was... not what was supposed to happen. Yes, BU did complete the sweep. But needed a 2-1 OT win in game 1, and a 5-4 victory in which the teams alternated scoring. On the other hand, of the 9 first round games, 8 were decided by a single goal. And NEU also needed OT to put away the equally hapless Black Bears. This could be chalked up to the Terriers facing a desperate UMass side with nothing to lose. Nonetheless, Lowell fans are being extra cocky this week.
BU managed to get on top early and stay there in the Hockey East Semi-finals against Northeastern, coming away with a 4-2 victory. Alas, the magic ran out as BC cakewalked their way to a 5-0 victory that was in many ways reminiscent of the last year's NCAA quarterfinal @ Wisconsin. As much as I hate to admit it, the Eagles were the better team Sunday, and BU simply did not have an answer. Still, getting to the championship game is an accomplishment, even if it does feel like the team took a bit of a slide backwards this year.

3/13 @ Lowell (Game 3) Location: Tsongas Center Time: 4:00 ET TV: Hockeyeastonline.TV
Lowell is a pretty good team. They won the tiebreaker over BU by virtue of earning a win over BC while the Terriers only managed to scrape together a tie. And while the two teams split earlier, BU won at home in overtime, while Lowell routed Boston in the return leg 6-3. Still, the teams are fairly evenly matched. BU has been playing its best hockey of the season as of late, while Lowell endured a bit of a rocky stretch before that win in the final game of the season. I think this series will go all three games, but it's a coin flip as to who will actually win it.
The release of the NCAA bracket made it official - with the loss to BC, BU's season is over as the Terriers didn't have a strong enough record to be considered for an at large selection. This is the first time BU has missed the tournament altogether since 2009. A season recap will be coming this weekend.
