Metrix Coin - The Fundamentals Gem
Welcome all, Let me tell you a story about a project that has some of the best fundamentals in this crypto space with very little recognition. The project we will discuss today is Metrix Coin
History of Innovative Product Development
Metrixcoin’s head developer is David Grunge who, with a team of developers, created mystakingwallet (MSW). Mystakingwallet was the very first mobile staking wallet and it was also the first to be available on the Google Play and Apple stores for purchase. It allows people to stake and perform coin control straight from their mobile devices. MSW is non-custodial and users are the only ones with access to their wallet’s private keys as they are all hosted on virtual private servers. Additionally, the app allows users to turn their mobile devices into masternode-ready devices with the click of a button, simplifying the process of masternode creation and making it more accessible to people. They went on to create partnerships with over a dozen other projects that harbor staking and masternode capabilities to take advantage of the one-click, turnkey masternode solutions.
Grudge Match Gaming (GMG)
GMG is an online gaming platform where users can compete against one another for Metrixcoin (MRX). There are no online gaming platforms that I am aware of that allow people to wager cryptocurrency on who is playing the game and also bet in a match against other players. It features many of the top games, and will continue to add new releases as they come out. Competitive Esports is a rapidly growing industry and has the potential, with the right execution, to become very popular. Whilst GMG is currently in beta testing phase, the team is currently working on a new partnership with BA Consult as outlined below.
Partnership with BA Consult
Metrix has recently partnered with BA Consult, an IT and systems integration company using their Cashinow machines. Their core business is automated payment management systems and are operating nationally throughout Italy. Some of their customers include casinos, large retailers, public transit systems like Trenitalia, and much more. BA Consult is looking to implement blockchain as a scalable solution for their business clients. They have selected Metrixcoin. The current plan is to use API integration to allow clients to market buy and sell Metrixcoin when needed. Customers and players will be rewarded for using Metrixcoin instead of Euros with each application. The proposed plan is that consumers (i.e. people in the grocery store buying milk) will provide payments as either cash or credit card for purchase and will have the option to pay using conventional methods of payment or MRX. If they choose to pay with MRX, they participate in a Loyalty Program where they may either benefit from reward points or a discount. The grocery store may then choose to hold their MRX in a wallet, or may choose to sell at market price instantly through the payment system. Clients that hold Metrixcoin may benefit from staking rewards at 10% interest annually, and other perks that have not been released to the public yet. Another example would be at the casino - using MRX instead of Euros would lead to reward points similar to existing reward structures for casino players. Alternatively, they may offer 5 bonus games for free or vouchers if they select MRX for payment. The players do not need to have any existing knowledge of cryptocurrency. Everything is handled by BA Consult and their business clients.
Upcoming Hard Fork
For all of this to become a reality, Metrix has an upcoming hard fork which will decrease staking rewards significantly (down to 10% initially) and will also allow for Governance. A Governor must hold 7.5 M of MRX to have voting privileges. Essentially, anyone can submit a proposal to the Governors for a fee, and the Governors will vote to determine whether or not a proposal would pass. The new chain will also facilitate up to 10,000 transactions per second, and will have extremely low fees (roughly 2 MRX per standard transaction) which, in today’s prices, is roughly 0.000512 USD. It also features both UTXO and EVM functionality which gives Metrixcoin more flexibility to be able to create smart-contracts and deploy dApps or MRC20 tokens. The team has already started development on ledger apps and chrome extensions to facilitate holding MRX on hardware wallets. They are also looking to implement offline staking which would require delegation of coins to an online node. Users could delegate and get rewards without needing to be active on the network and be accomplished in a secure way. This Medium post outlines some of the changes (there have been some further changes to specific numbers, but this summarizes the main points very well) - https://medium.com/@Metrix/metrix-2020-new-direction-7ef7d2e9932b

With Trent now in charge of business development, things have been moving quickly and the project has been gaining traction on its current exchanges. With this new partnership, Metrix will have a significant use case and a strong potential for exponential growth and adoption. Thank you for taking the time to review the background about this project! Of the many that I have mentored, for free, on how to handicap races, they’re all taught the first rule of picking horses…. RULE #1 - KEEP YOUR OWN COUNSEL. MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND. NEVER LISTEN TO OTHERS. For Those Who Have Enquired - a) I do not play off tracks b) I post primarily trainer and jockey information c) When I have the time, and believe me this takes quite a bit of my time, I will give a reason why I believe the horse I am selecting has a better than average chance d) As with you, I have cold streaks and hot. If you truly believe you can sustain in this game by not recognizing each, then get out. e) I am not a tout. Touts charge for their service and lie their asses off. I have never asked a soul here for a nickel. f) Naïve me thought that the intent of this site is to exchange insights to help each other improve. Much to my chagrin, it really misses that mark. g) I do not bet everything that I post and I do not post everything that I bet. The reason? Today, I hit the first three races that I bet at Sunland – one of those races was the sixth race where I won the $129 exacta and the $1350 tri. Then I posted the 9th race and it poo-poo’d and I got hell from one eunuch on this site. That’s why. h) For the very few of you who select to throw barbs, yet never post anything but trolling comments, you make me laugh. I would imagine that those types are a likely target for predators like Feist, Root, or any other snake oil tout that is out there waiting for your dumb ass to pony up your money. i) If you’re struggling to manage, read this https://www.usracing.com/news/time-to-shape-up-your-bankroll j) For the others who write and make contributory remarks, thank you. Wednesday MVR 3rd – Julie Papada has a live one in #1 Royal’d. This horse has done well at Mahoning Vallley going 17:6-2-2 for $138K. However, the better alternative is #2 Totellyouthetruth. The reason is that Royal’d will be racing without Lasix today and it doesn’t specify whether this is its first race absent of the diuretic. If I find out that it’s not its first, I will lean heavier to the 1 4th Visual Mission – not crazy about betting a horse who has been primarily racing against state breds, but from the looks of it, he’s hitting his peak form cycle. Trainer Gorham and jockey Pilares hitting 20% and Pilares, one of the better route riders, is hitting 18% at this distance. 7th Ned Devine – 2nd after claim for Julie Pappada and has Jose Bracho, 33% in routes, in the irons. Last out appears to be one of those “take him out for a look” type of races, so expect better today. 8th Golden Pearl - Julie Pappada 2nd after the claim mare gets Luis Quinones up and they’re a 33% win prop. Julie is 50% in msw races and the turnback in distance will be a benefit Tam 1st Mobeatyabad – has the highest Equibase number of all the horses in this race in his last out, and that was his first. So, expect improvement. 4th Lady Breanna – Gerald Bennett/Samy Camacho 27% together, Bennett 21% from turf to dirt. This mare showed spring in her step last out and had two sharp freshening’s since. Drops her tag today and happy to have her second out at Tampa. Sam 6th High Security – first time out for the Diodoro barn, he’s had three solid works and Quincy Hamilton aboard where they’re 23%. Could catch a nice price in this. CT 7th Aaron’s Tap – Arnaldo Bocachica and trainer Jeff Runco 37% together and this Northern Afleet gelding will pad their respective numbers. Bocachica will hold this guy back until the far turn and then let him loose to smoke the pack.
Accountability and Review of Thursday's picks will be at the bottom of the thread this time. Plus, I'll include some value plays I like for some of the graded stakes races at Saratoga. R1: Short field, little value. Pass. R2: #3 Iron Curtain (ML 5-1). It's hard to see past the favorite, but he fits around this level speed figure wise and had to run against a closing track bias last time in his last race. R3: #2 Psycho Dar (ML 4-1). Anything less than ML I wouldn't take, but he's the fastest one in the field and looks to have found the correct level he should be running at. Also seems to like the 5f sprints compared to coming down the hill at SA. R4: I wouldn't mind one of the first time starters #4 Five O or #5 Sweet Boy but I can' make an official play. Pass. R5: I can't see past the Callaghan runners but they are both short. I would take #4 Shedaresthedevil (ML 3-1) at 6-1 or above. R6: #3 Castle (ML 3-1) is fair at ML. He's probably the most talented of this group and gets a great turf rider. R7: #3 Virginia Hall (ML 4-1) drops in class and has the fastest speed figures in the field. Maybe doesn't like the turf and got the bullet in her last work. D'Amato has been ice cold so far though so I couldn't fault anyone betting against. R8: #6 Valedictorian (ML 6-1) shouldn't have been the 4th choice on the ML. She's a very game filly who always finds her way to the front. The rail being at 12 feet today gives her an advantage, but not as much as it would have been if they kept it at 30 feet from earlier this week. R9: I think there's a lot of value in this race. Favorite drew the rail which has been bad and is facing winners for the first time, so I will give a few horses here. #3 She's All Women (ML 12-1) had to run against a track bias last time. 5th place finisher won an allowance at DMR next out. #4 Moreisbetter (ML 20-1) is 1/1 on dirt and returns to the surface. I'm not convinced she needs the lead so maybe she can sit off it and steal at a big price. #9 Give Me a Hint (ML 10-1) hasn't done anything wrong on dirt. Took money on turf which was unimpressive. I like the return to dirt and 2nd off the layoff angle. R10: Competitive field. I'll give #1 Zucchera (ML 15-1). Baltas is a capable turf trainer. 2 runners from that field returned to break maiden in MSW next out. If she can get a better start, she is a contender. SARATOGA PLAYS R8: #6 Please Flatter Me (15-1) ran against a track bias last time and did great. I'd feel a bit more confident if Cintron rode, especially since he is riding earlier in the card, but Velazquez isn't a downgrade by any means. She's definitely slower, but she's worth a look. R9: #5 Vino Rosso (ML 6-1). I was a hated him last year but he's turned it around this year. I also think McKinzie is better going shorter but with little speed here, maybe he can wire. Review/Accountability of Del Mar 08/01/19 I felt the card was very unlucky for my selections. R1: #7 Satori (ML 8-1, actual odds 9.5-1). Unlucky as she broke in the air at the start. She sped to midpack before fading. I would bet her back. R2: Passed R3: Song of the Night (ML 3-1, actual odds 2-1). Thought he would pass in the stretch, then didn't. Would take a shot if he dropped to MCL. R4: Red Bunting (ML 15-1, actual odds 23.4-1). He got set up with a fast pace and really should have at least finished 2nd. He got bumped in the stretch that hampered his momentum but for some reason didn't get the DQ to 2nd. Show bet paid $7. Again, felt it was unlucky the stewards didn't DQ to 2nd and that he got slowed in the stretch. R5: #5 Time for Kisses (ML 6-1, actual odds 19.20-1). Another unlucky start where the other horse, #4 Naughty Tiger, came out and interfered with 3 other runners to his outside. She ultimately finished 5th after the DQ but I think she is better than that. Naughty Tiger finished 2nd but was DQ'd to last. R6: Passed. R7: Passed after our horse scratched.
Preview of the Alabama Stakes; Pacific Classic and more
Saturday August 17, 2019 Saratoga Race Course Race: 9 (5:26 PM EST Post) Lake Placid Regal Glory boasts impressive stats, including a 6-4-2-0 career record and back to back Stakes wins in her last two. With rain in the forecast, I’m not worried about her as she can handle any surface condition and this distance hits her squarely between the eyes…..my choice in a very well matched field………………………Blowout also sports impressive credentials in her short career as she is 5-2-3-0. Good looking filly by Dansili ran the best race of her life (92 BSF) on a turf course labeled “good”. Once again, with rain in the forecast, an off turf course could be right up her alley. I hate to sound like a broken record, but yes, trainer Chad Brown could conceivably run 1-2 here…………………………Varenka is a daughter of the wickedly fast Ghostzapper who has clearly improved from 2018 to 2019. She should be ok on an off turf course and clearly has the ability to win this horse race. However, her (come from well behind) running style and drawing the rail doesn’t sit too well with me……………………….Honorable Mentions: Vow to Recover has been on the board in 6 of 8 turf starts and is another who ran the best race of her career on a “good” turf course….could be a menace, especially if the rains come…………………..Feel Glorious is quite the contrary to some others in here in the sense that she appears to need a firm turf course to do her best running…...still another who is capable ……………………….Your long-shot horse in this race is clearly Wildlife, who was visually impressive beating a MSW field, then coming back and wiping the floor with an Allowance field. Filly by Animal Kingdom steps up here and her BSFs are a little short, but based what I’ve visually seen, she could surprise a few people in this race. Race: 10 (5:59 PM EST Post) Alabama Stakes Point of Honor has improved through each of her first five races as her BSFs would indicate (76, 83, 87, 90 and 91) and it doesn’t appear she has hit her ceiling just yet. Filly by Curlin was impressive rallying wide on the far turn to win the Black Eyed Susans and then chased, and finished second beaten by only one length, to that juggernaut they call Guarana (who could be any kind) in the Coaching Club American Oaks. Note how she came home the last furlong in a solid :12.1 that day as well. Only draw backs I see is (if the rains come) she’s never touched a wet track and what’s up with the slow work (5F- 1:05.3) at Oklahoma last week?..............................In taking Point of Honor, the drop dead gorgeous Dunbar Road scares the daylights out of me. This $350,000 by Quality Road is a half length shy of being unbeaten in her career and could NOT have looked any better overcoming a slow early pace to win the Mother Goose last time out. Bay filly has been training very well of late and decimated an Allowance field in her one and only wet track try…….looms a major threat……………………….Champagne Anyone actually beat both Point of Honor and Dunbar Road at GP in March but her form seems to have taken a slight step backwards since……………….Honorable Mentions: Ulele has good speed, is consistent (7 for 7 on the board in her career) and finished just a half length behind Point of Honor two starts back…………………….Lady Apple has improved leaps and bounds from 2018 to 2019. Another filly by Curlin, she was 0 for 4 last year but is 4 for 5 this year and her BSFs have been climbing, highlighted by an 88 in winning the Iowa Oaks last time out. Del Mar Thoroughbred Club Race: 9 (9PM EST Post) Del Mar Oaks Cambier Parc is a $1,250,000 daughter of “King of the (sales) Ring” Medaglia d’Oro who had won three of her first five races with legitimate excuses in her two defeats (muddy track debut and off turf course). Good looking filly then finished a close third in the Grade: 1 Belmont Oaks while chasing probably the best three year old turf filly in the country (Concrete Rose) and ran the last quarter mile of that race is an attention getting :22.1……………..narrow margin over the very versatile Mucho Unusual, who is unbeaten since being put on the grass three starts back. She was visually impressive coming from well back, with a brazen five wide move on the turn, to get up by a neck in the Grade: 2 San Clemente in her last. Filly by “M3” shows two monster works this month, signaling to me she is sitting on another big race in this spot………………………Play “Pin the tail on the Donkey” with the rest of the field as they are difficult to separate. That said, I’ll take Lady Prancealot, who is about a half a length away from being 4 for 4 this year, for the show dough. She draws well for her running style and should be coming late again in this spot…………………Honorable Mentions: Apache Princess hasn’t won since February but note how she just missed behind Mucho Unusual in her last after a ridiculously wide trip all the way around….could better this rating……………..Hard Legacy is 3 for 5 in her career and looked good winning the Grade: 3 Regret at Churchill in her last. Note how this filly, by the gorgeous Hard Spun, motored home the last furlong in :11.4 in that race…………………………..Hidden Message gets the proverbial “dark horse” tag in this race. Filly by Scat Daddy ran well in four of her first five races overseas and goes “first time Lasix” here…………………Raymundos Secret won both of her starts vs. lesser by wide margins with speed figures that put her on par with several of her rivals in this spot. No telling how good she may be at this point….find out more on Saturday. Race: 10 (9:30 PM EST Post) Pacific Classic Campaign is 5 for 10 in his career and 3 for 5 this year. This $675,000 colt by Curlin is sharp right now as he took down a Grade: 3 at Santa Anita, just missed in the Grade: 2 Brooklyn at Belmont and probably ran the best race of his life while winning the Cougar II in his last, which was also his Del Mar debut, his last three times out. 6-1 on the morning line against this watered down field? I’ll take it………………..Pavel continues to run admirably against some of the best horses in the world today. Albeit, he is just 3 for 17 in his career, it must be noted he’s faced the late Battle of Midway, the third richest horse in the history of the sport, Thunder Snow, Mitole/McKinzie, and Preservationist/Catholic Boy in his last four races and will meet no such rivals here. So, although this is a Grade: 1, one million dollar race, this is a “hidden” class drop for him……………………… Quip has come back running as a 4YO as, after needing his first start of the year, he won the Oaklawn Handicap and just missed behind Seeking the Soul in the Stephen Foster last time out. I won’t be surprised if he runs big in this spot ………………….Honorable Mentions: I’m not much of a Seeking the Soul fan. Never have been actually. Having said that, he appears to be in good form right now highlighted by winning the Stephen Foster at Churchill last time out. CD is by far his most favorite surface, so I’m thinking that might have “moved him up” a bit and he comes back down to reality in this spot. I’m going to try to beat this 3-1 morning line favorite for sure…………………………….I wonder which Tenfold, who ran huge in winning the Pimlico Special two back but got buried in the Stephen Foster last time out, we will see this time? ………..Ditto for War Story, will we see the horse who got beaten by a no exaggeration 50 lengths two starts back or the one who dug in gamely down the lane to win the Monmouth Cup in his last?......................In such a weakly draw field, don’t be so quick to throw out 20-1 shots Mongolian Groom, who just missed behind the mega-talented Catalina Cruiser last time out, or Draft Pick, who has hit the board in 9 of 11 career tries and was right behind Mongolian Groom and Catalina Cruiser in his last. By: Gerard Apadula Director of Equine Operations and Development Knights of the Round Stable Thoroughbred Racing Team [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) 2019- Record: 52-149 = 35% 2018- Record: 107-261= 41% 2017- Record: 92-235 = 39% 2016- Record: 91-229 = 40% 2015- Record: 67-180 = 37% 2014- Record: 29-73 = 40% 2013- Record: 20-59= 34% 2012 -Record: 24-73= 33% 2011 –Record: N/A 2010- Record: 24-74= 33% Little Bets N’ Pieces **** Omaha Beach, the early Kentucky Derby favorite who was scratched with a throat issue, is nearing his return to racing. The handsome colt by War Front breezed six furlongs at Del Mar on Monday in 1:13.3, keeping him on track for the Aug. 25 Shared Belief Stakes. “Right now, I'd say yes, it's a go,” said trainer Richard Mandella, when asked about making the Shared Belief. “This was good, but we didn't want to do too much with him.” **** The hulking and speedy Catalina Cruiser will not run in Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Saturday. The 5-year-old son of Union Rags, who is unbeaten in two starts this year, (the True North and the San Diego Handicap), has opted to for shorter distances through the remainder of 2019. “It's the distance, and this is a heavy track this year,” trainer John Sadler said. “We want to keep him where we're more comfortable.” Next options for Catalina Cruiser include the seven-furlong Pat O'Brien or Forego, with a return start in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile a potential target for the end of the year. **** Hall of Famer and the immensely popular Zenyatta is expecting once again, according to www.zenyatta.com. The three-time, Amazonian champion is in foal with a daughter to Candy Ride and is “doing well” at Lane's End Farm. “Over the years we've seen how happy she is with a foal by her side, and we can't wait to share this journey with you,” the website says. The filly will be the fourth foal out of the 2010 Horse of the Year, joining Cozmic One (2012), Ziconic (2013), and an unraced 2017 filly by Medaglia d'Oro named Zellda.
Pony Blindly Reacts to Steven Universe, Episodes 16-18
Guess who's back? Back again? Pony's back! Tell a friend! Or-don't-because-I'm-really-bad-at-sticking-to-a-consistent-schedule-and-it-takes-me-two-weeks-to-watch-33-minutes-of-television!
So I'm sure there are plenty of you thinking - Pony, what the fuck?! But you know what? I didn't lie. I said I wouldn't take two weeks to put out a post again. So this time I took two and a half weeks. So ha.
No excuses, but a few days after I made my last post I got very sick. I missed a few days of work, and during those days I thought that, since I was home, I'd try to work on my next post - no luck. I felt so bad I just didn't have it in me to try. And once I got well enough to go to work, I was just going to work and coming home and going to sleep. I was a mess for about a week. And there was the Overwatch beta in there as well, which consumed me for the 5 or 6 days it was open. Good gracious ignacious I am going to be so addicted to that game.
Anyway, I'm back now. I'm sorry. D:
If you missed my last reactions and need to catch up, check these out:
And a quick reminder that I am totally new to Steven Universe, and I am COMPLETELY SPOILER FREE. Please respect that and abstain from/mark your spoilers in the comments below. If in doubt about whether your comment is spoilery, don’t post! I rather enjoy going into a show totally blind, which I’ve managed to do here. So again, please be mindful!
Let's just get started before I vanish for another month, alright?
Season One, Episode Sixteen: “Steven the Swordfighter”
This lonely blade movie they’re watching reminds me Kung Fu Hustle, for whatever reason.
Couple things: Steven’s face, for one; he’s using Garnet’s hair as a head and arm rest, nice; the way his elbows are bent is weirding me out but okay; and finally, Pearl’s nose made it into this shot despite the fact I didn’t need it to.
I have to admit that I can be a bit like Pearl at times - over analytical about movies or television or whatever to the point that I point out flaws, like how something might be scientifically impossible or incredibly improbable. Drives my mom nuts.
“It’s just a movie, Pearl!” This is what I’m told, too, but for me, when a movie tries to do something and they don’t do enough research into whatever it is they’re trying to convey, it takes me out of the movie. If it can be explained through some in-movie reasoning, fine. But otherwise, research what you’re putting out.
Pearl is always so showy about things. Her trying to explain how to summon her weapon, the way she fights, the way she puts away her swords, the way she summoned that police tape - it’s all very elaborate and ornate.
It is pretty neat that Pearl can create a hologram of herself that functions independently of her.
A: “Aww, jeeze.” That’s the sound of someone who’s seen this too many times to count and is sick of it. Maybe not necessarily “this” as in this exact scenario, but “this” as in Pearl showing off and being Pearl.
HP: “You’ve already made a mistake by challenging me!” And she’s programmed with Pearl’s personality, no doubt about that.
Omg the music here is incredible. So is the animation sequence. The jazzy piano really compliments Pearl’s grandiose fighting style. It’s so much like watching a performance.
I didn’t know I cared that much about Pearl. My stomach is in knots right now. What the fuck you guys. Cute and adorable my ASS. Lighthearted? Fun? CHUCKLES? Fuck you. I hate you guys.
But watching Pearl effectively stab...Pearl reminded me of this wise prophet.
But I digress, let’s get back to the show. So is Pearl ded?
Oh so she just EXPLODED into a cloud of dust. Or well, poofed maybe? Her gem fell out of that cloud of dust just like how the gems from the monsters do.
“Challenger defeated. Level one failed!” Git gud scrub.
“Sometimes, if our bodies are badly damaged, we release our physical forms and retreat to our gems to regenerate.” So kind of a yes to my above mini-theory.
“So, how long will it take her to regenerate? Five minutes? Ten minutes?” Uhh
“Ehhh I say leave it.” Of course Amethyst is down with the mess.
Oh my god, he threw a sheet on Hologram Pearl, like how you’d throw a blanket over the cage of a bird. More proof that Pearl is, in fact, a bird.
“Organizing messes is one of Pearl’s favourite hobbies.” Why am I not surprised. But is it really a hobby of hers, or more like how when a kid says “oh, my mom loves to clean the dishes/do the laundry! She does it all the time!”
“Brother, is that you?” ”Yes, it’s me your, “brother.” hey its me ur brother
Oh no, I think he does feel responsible for Pearl poofing! Which, granted, he sort of is - but then again he’s a kid, and Pearl is a very old gem person thing, and supposedly a trained swordfighter to boot. I think the responsibility of not getting injured falls on her, ultimately. Not to place blame or anything.
“The TV! Why must you destroy the things I love?!” Me_irl
“I should have waited for...the perfect moment!” He took something away from this at least? I can’t believe the ole’ boomerang mop trick worked, though. I also can’t believe how close Steven was to being legit killed.
Garnet with Amethyst tied up like a balloon is primo.
And finally new and improved Pearl. I have to say, I really really like the new outfit, much better than the previous one. ANd I don’t know if was done purposefully or not, but I like that the sash/bow is around her abdomen where she was stabbed. Nice.
So Pearl regenerated almost immediately after Hologram Pearl was gone. Is that a coincidence or no? Since Hologram Pearl was a projection of Pearl’s, and assuming that HP’s existence required energy from Pearl for her to operate, maybe that’s why she took so long? Amethyst even says she’s “really taking her time with this one.” And then as soon as HP is erased, Pearl is able to come back. Maybe that’s looking into it too much.
“I got hit by an airplane!” Never change Amethyst.
“Ugh, I can’t leave you guys alone for a second.” Maybe you should think about that the next time you get stabbed and essentially DIE for two weeks, PEARL.
Closing thoughts on “Steven the Swordfighter:” This episode didn’t seem to have too much to bite into, but what it did was great. So first off, Pearl died. That was a thing that happened. I’d be lying if I didn’t audibly gasp and get misty-eyed for a second there. Everything about that scene was gut-wrenching, from the music during the moment, to the awful, guttural noise Pearl made as she was stabbed, to how expressive her hair was, and how her pupils shrunk and the lines under her eyes, to the silhouette of her standing with a sword through her as she dropped hers lifelessly, down to the moment she poofed into thin air mid-sentence. I felt a bit sick, really - that’s how good it was. I’ll undoubtedly go back and watch it a thousand times. But then there’s also the fact that the gems are able to “release their physical form,” which gives more meaning to the line “your body’s an illusion.” So from what I gather, their physical form is a projection of themselves, in a sense. Their actual gem is their true self, maybe? And finally, the end there where Pearl is regenerating and she starts with a blank slate and goes through several outfits before finally reforming. It’s given me a lot to think about. Other than these good juicy bits, the episode was cute as always, despite having such a dark beginning. OH, and that fight sequence and the music during was just A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++.
Season One, Episode Seventeen: “Lion 2: The Movie”
Okay, that opening caught me off-guard for a moment there.
C: “In a world where humanity is pushed to the brink, it turns out, that the one who was most human was a dog! ...copter.”
S: “And did you see where that missile came out of?!” His butt. Heh.
Garnet always appreciates a funky beat. Plus, I’m very happy to have unibrowPearl in my life now, thanks.
S: “Connie promises this movie’s even better than any magic!”
C: “I did NOT say that.”
“My parents say I’m not allowed to buy snacks at the theater. So, we’re not buying anything at the theater.” Wow. What a rebel. But seriously, concession stands are ridiculously expensive. I understand why, but damn dude.
“Wow Steven, everything in your life is so awesome and magical...the most exciting thing in my life is tennis practice.” Ohhh don’t be like that Connie. No. :(
“Forehand! Backhand! OVERHEADDD DEATH STRIKE!” I can’t say that I play much tennis - because I don’t - but something about that just doesn't seem right.
Hmm. Lion seems to perk up as Steven says “but I’m not trained very well either!” Maybe coincidence? But the little chime (I hear that short reprise of Lion’s theme in there!) coupled with his reaction makes me think otherwise. Wonder where this is going.
Oh my god the music on this show is just too damn good. I really love this background music. Very soothing, a little eerie. And do I taste just a hint of Lion’s theme in there? Ugh. So good.
So let me pause for a second and put a few things together here. We’ve got the pink, triangle-y swirly do-dad thing with the thorns, shown both here on the hand plate as well as on Steven’s shield. I think we can assume that, since Steven inherited Rose’s gem, he also inherited her shield. So clearly this symbol is associated with Rose in some way, yeah? So this place, the cave or whatever, that they’re in is somehow tied to Rose. Which brings me to my more important point - Lion has something to do with Rose, doesn’t he? I mean, he’s pink. Rose was pink. There you go. But seriously, why would Lion just up and bring Steven to this place if he wasn’t associated with Rose somehow, assuming that this place maybe was Rose’s? I assumed Lion had something to do with Rose from the get-go anyway, but I didn't have a whole lot to base that on other than he's...well...pink. And you don't just find pink lions in the desert everyday.
“What does that mean, Lion? What does that even mean?!” This is exactly how I talk to my dog.
“What if he brought you here...for a reason?” Oh I’d bet lots of good money that he did, Connie.
Steven is worried about missing the commercials and previews. Who in this history of ever has ever worried one iota about missing commercials and previews?
“Near the front but not too close” are not perfect seats, Steven. About ¾ of the way back and in the middle - that’s ideal. What is this, amateur hour?
And now the pedestal and everything lights up as Steven touches it. Reacting to his gem - the Rose Quartz gem - maybe?
And then the swords disappear again. The room is clearly reacting to Steven and his...thoughts? Emotions? Words? Something.
Oooohhh, very interesting. That’s a lot of different types of armor. I see some that are modeled very closely after historial suits of armor. If this room is in fact Rose’s as I speculate, what would she need armor for? Or is this armor for her at all?
“This is so great but...I get the feeling, though, I’m not really supposed to be here.” Hmm. That’s an interesting line to have her say. I wonder if she means that she feels like she’s out of place, or more like she’s not welcome?
“And I want to see lots of explosions!” That abrupt change in tone really caught me off guard. I jumped a little.
This thing is a bit creepy. It's not sentient - or at least I don't think it is - but it almost seems sentient somehow. Maybe it's just the face, idk.
Okay, so back to my previous idea from earlier that Lion was in fact reacting to Steven mentioning that he’s not well-trained: I’m gonna go ahead and say that I’m pretty sure I’m right about that. I think that this thing is probably something like a training bot, and that’s why Lion brought Steven here - to train.
Also, it shoots out elemental damage - fire, ice, and electricity. Um, excuse me? Where is grass? And ghost? And ground? And faerie? And psychic? And water? And dragon? And flying? And the rest? Damn dude, way to be totally dismissive of all other damage types.
“That’s okay, let’s just forget about it…” Connie NOOO. She has some serious insecurity issues to work through. I’m a fine one to talk about that, but look - just because you think Steven is more interesting and has a more exciting life than you doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to hang with you. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t - right?
And now Steven thinks it’s his fault! It’s just a negative feedback cycle.
See? Steven may have a very unique life with a lot going on, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t enjoy normal, typical things - like Dogcopter, or a normal, non-magical girl like Connie.
“Well I’m no dog-copter.” Connie HUSH YOUR LITTLE FACE
Lion forgot to close the portal. WTF Lion. You had one job.
Closing thoughts on “Lion 2: The Movie:” As always, another good, cute episode. Connie definitely has some issues to work out over her insecurity and devaluing herself. That sucks, and I know from experience how much it sucks and how hard it is to change how you see about yourself. And Lion is definitely in some way shape or form related to Rose somehow. I want to know how. I have lots of thoughts running through my head. I need answers, people. ANSWERS.
Season One, Episode Eighteen: "Beach Party"
A: “Pearl? I got a boo-boo.”
P: “Ohh, walk it off.” Rood dood.
P: “Let’s show this thing what we’re made of, guys!”
A: “What do you think we’ve been doing for the past hour?” This thing must be giving them a rough time, then. They’ve never seemed to have much problem with these gem monsters in the past.
A: “Yeah! So we’ll deal with it later." This is how I operate in life as well.
“You’ve wrecked my sign, and now you’re just sitting up there!” Could have sworn on my first listen he didn’t say “sitting.”
“Are we engaged in a secret staring contest?” Yes. And Garnet wins. Dude, don’t even try a staring contest with Garnet. She’s got an eye on you.
“Gnark!” I don’t know what it is about this delivery - the tone of her voice, the very slight pause before the next line, I’m not sure - but it’s cracking me up.
So this guy clearly doesn’t know the Crystal Gems very well, which makes me wonder how well the townsfolk do understand the gems. They have to be aware of them, yeah? And they have to realize that they’re not normal people. So do they just accept the fact?
Okay, this dad dude is kind of annoying. I understand he's upset about the sign and all, but he’s just got that “I’m always angry about something” sort of vibe going.
“Cheese on bread.” I don’t know what this means, but it’s going into my vocabulary.
Yeah, him yelling at Steven has solidified my dislike for this character.
Haha, that music as Kofi (sp?) tells Steven that he’s banned from the shop. So dramatic, yet something tells me most of the gems won’t care. Amethyst might.
S: “Yeah, see? That is SO nice of you!” I guess that’s the trade-off for doing something because you genuinely want to versus doing something because you’re looking for praise. The people who are doing something because they want recognition are going to get that recognition and everyone is going to assume they’re a good person. The people who do what they do because they want to and because it’s right won’t get recognized unless they point it out themselves, and then you’re muddying the waters.
Oh. My. God. Steven’s little giggle as he’s grilling the hotdogs and hamburgers. Too adorable. Cannot handle.
“The shop is closed today because it’s broken.” Dude chill. Why is he so short with Steven when Steven was not the one who messed up his shop? ALSO HE’S A CHILD.
This little introduction is so played up! I love it. Garnet’s outfit is too sexy; I really love Amethyst’s outfit - I love her hair up, and the short and the tank top and ugh so cute, and then Pearl - well, Pearl’s is nice. Kind of reminds me of a gown an older woman might wear, but I guess it’s fitting for Pearl.
This guy is so fucking hung up about his damn sign. Dude. Maybe quit being an asshat about it and things could be resolved?
So they’re going to play volleyball? Alrighty then.
P: “There is no way I’d lose to someone like you.” What is that supposed to mean, Pearl? Wow. You can’t speak to Amethyst like that just because she’s short.
So I guess Steven did well with pairing everyone up with their parallel, sort of at least. Jenny and Amethyst do well together; Kiki and Pearl, too. I don’t see how Kofi and Garnet could possibly be a good pairing but they look similarish with the hair I guess?
I’ve got to say that so far this episode isn’t doing a whole lot for me. It’s alright but...ehh.
“Did you know that when sand is super heated it turns into glass?” Actually yes, I did. I thought that was common knowledge. I mean, you put sand into the stone furnace with coal and it makes glass, duh!
“Gems, protect the pizzas!” Wait, is their last name Pizza?
Wait...why did they have Amethyst turn into a ball and then have Jenny roll her to the net? Why didn’t Amethyst just go to the net and then...oh whatever.
Pearl saying “yes ma’am!” to the little old lady (can’t really make out her name - Gunga? Nanafuah? Something like that) is cute.
“Hit Amethyst into the air as hard as you can!” Not a problem.
“Dont worry! Here comes Garnet!” Nice little throwback there.
Okay so at least mean dad dude lightened up a bit at the end there, and all it took was his family nearly being blown away into the ocean by a giant magical pufferfish.
Closing thoughts on “Beach Party: I hate that I feel this way, but this episode for me was just...meh. It had funny moments, but overall I feel like this episode brought very little to the table in terms of furthering anything along, be it plot or character progression or whatever. I hate the term “filler,” but that’s what this episode felt like. A placeholder. I don’t have much to say about it. It wasn't necessarily a bad episode, just not as good as some that I’ve seen so far. But they can’t all be winners, eh?
Another mixed bag of sorts. Steven the Swordfighter was a pretty good episode - the middle was a little blasé, but that emotional punch was really something else. Plus Pearl got a new outfit, I learned a little more about the gems and how they operate, and there was some great animation and music. Lion 2: The Movie was another nice episode. It didn't wow me or anything, but I feel like there's a lot going on that I won't really understand until later, maybe. We also get a look into Connie's self-esteem and insecurity issues, which is good for understanding her character. And then Beach Party was an episode. I didn't care for it too much. It wasn't bad, like I said, it just didn't give me much to bite into, and it introduced a character that, as it stands, I don't like much. But again, every episode can't be a knock-out, yeah?
Let me apologize ONCE AGAIN for being so late on this. I just can't get into a good groove. I'm not making anymore promises or estimations for when I'll be posting - I'll just post as I can. Life throws curveballs when you least expect them.
Next three episodes are Rose's Room, Coach Steven, and Joking Victim. I don't have anything to pull for the titles of the latter two, but Rose's Room hints at something to do with Rose, right? Do we finally get to see her room in the temple, I guess? That'd be cool! Maybe learn something about the mystery that is this pink lady.
Oh! And I was also going to ask - would you guys prefer that I make these reactions 2 episodes at a time instead of 3? I'd at least be able to get them out somewhat faster, although in the grand scheme of things I don't know if that matters. I thought I'd ask, though!
I'm not going to promote it too much anymore since I assume anyone who wants to join already has, but as always - if you'd like notifications for these very sparse reactions, leave a comment or send a message my way, and I'll hook you up bby!
And as always, please remember: THIS IS A SPOILER FREE, BLIND REACTION SERIES. I basically know nothing about this show, so please keep your comments and discussion below relatively spoiler-free!
TCU (Battle for the Iron Skillet): Separated by 40 miles and sharing the same metroplex, SMU and TCU will meet for the 92nd time this season with the Horned Frogs holding a 45-40-7 edge in the rivalry. The matchup has been extremely one sided one way or the other for some time, with SMU winning 15 straight games from 1972-1986 followed by TCU winning 17 of the past 23 games. The past two games have been close, with SMU winning 40-33 in overtime in 2011 and TCU handing SMU a 24-16 loss last year in monsoon-like conditions. Bonus pranks for your entertainment: TCU field desecration (1999), SMU stadium vandalism (2011).
Rice (Battle for the Mayor's Cup): With SMU leaving Conference USA this season, it will be the first time since the 1920's (excluding those two years in the 80's that I'm sure I'll touch on later) that these two teams won't face each other and the first time since 1918 that they won't be in the same conference. SMU leads the all-time series 48-41-1 throughout 90 meetings, although Rice holds a 9-6 edge since the Mayor's Cup was introduced in 1998. The Owls are in possession of trophy after a 36-14 beating of the Mustangs last season.
Navy (Gansz Trophy): While they have only met 16 times in their history (Navy holds a 9-7 edge), this travelling trophy was created to honor Frank Gansz, who played center and linebacker for the Midshipmen before a long and illustrious coaching career. He was serving as SMU's special teams coach when he passed way from complications following knee surgery in 2009. The Mustangs have not faired well in these games lately - some low-lights include setting our field on fire with pre-game fireworks (2002) before getting destroyed 38-7 and a 34-7 loss in 2008 in which Navy didn't even bother attempting a pass.
Houston: Wouldn't call this game a true rivalry, but these two teams seem tied at the hip for the immediate future with both joining the American Athletic Conference this season. SMU has not done well against Houston lately, but had a resounding 72-42 victory in 2012 after 6 straight losses. Most SMU fans are still bitter from a 1989 contest in which Houston ran up the score in a 95-21 victory against a team of freshmen, but those same freshmen would have their revenge 4 years later by knocking off the Cougars 41-16.
2012 Season Record: 7-6 (5-3) Coach: June Jones (31-34 in 5 seasons) Key Players:
Garrett Gilbert (JR QB): 268/506 (53.0%), 2932 yds, 15 td, 15 int. Big things were expected out of Gilbert going into the 2013 season but he seemed to struggle throughout the season. Hard to say how much of it was on him, a revamped offensive line or the inconsistency of the receivers. Towards the second half of the season he started to scramble more which was very successful. The team will rely on him even more going into his senior season.
Zach Line (SR RB): 277 att, 1278 yds, 13 td. After missing the final 3 games of 2011 with an injury, Line picked up right where he left off, picking up major chunks of yards in passing formations. By the end of the season he had tied Eric Dickerson's school record of 47 career rushing touchdowns and was named Conference USA offensive player of the year. With his graduation, this will be the biggest question mark for the Mustangs going into next season.
Margus Hunt (SR DE): 31 tkl (11.5 tfl), 8 sck, 1 int, 2 ffbl. Perhaps the most interesting player to ever suit up for the Mustangs, Hunt was an athletic marvel - at 6'8" 227 lbs, he recently did 38 reps at the combine and ran a 4.60 forty yard dash. He made a name for himself early on blocking field goals and extra points, finishing with 17. He absolutely destroyed Fresno State in his last game, with 3 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and a safety.
Ja'Gared Davis (SR LB): 77 tkl (11 tfl), 4.0 sck, 2 int, 3 ffbl, 1 frec, 1 td. Both of these guys have been impact players since they were freshman and it's going to be a little different to see next year's defense with them missing. Reed led the team in tackles for the past 3 seasons and was named to the 2nd team CUSA defense while Davis was named to the 1st team CUSA defense.
Biggest Plays:
Furious Tulsa rally stopped just short: Tulsa came to Dallas with a perfect 7-0 conference record and was headed to the CUSA Championship game. SMU was 5-6 and needed a win for bowl eligiblity. The Mustangs stormed out of the gate, jumping all over Tulsa to the tune of a 35-6 late 3rd quarter lead. Tulsa reeled off 3 straight touchdowns and got the ball back with 46 seconds left, but a last second desperation heave was stopped just a half yard short and SMU escaped with a 35-27 victory.
Garrett Gilbert darts up the middle for 74 yards, touchdown: From the same Tulsa game, Gilbert showed off his legs on this play. Normally in the Run and Shoot, you would ask your quarterback to sit back and pick the defense apart with his arm, but if they aren't going to bother putting any players in the middle of the field, you might as well take advantage.
Margus Hunt says 'Aloha' to Derek Carr, Fresno State: Back in 2009, SMU went into the Hawaii Bowl as a heavy underdog to Colin Kaepernick and the Nevada Wolfpack. After a 45-10 dismantling, you would think people would learn not to bet against June Jones in Hawaii, but SMU found themselves in the same situation last season against Fresno State. Margus Hunt made sure the Mustangs' dominance on the Big Island continued, toying with the Bulldogs' offensive line in a 43-10 romp.
The out of conference schedule is a bit daunting with two Big XII teams and one SEC team, and this is after Montana State was added in favor of Baylor. The conference schedule is a bit more forgiving, as the one team SMU will not play in 2013, Louisville, is considered to be among the favorites to win the conference. SMU has a brief history with Temple and UConn but has never faced Rutgers, Temple, Cincinnati or USF. 2013 Roster The Greats Greatest Games:
1935 vs TCU: SMU (10-0-0) and TCU (11-0-0) matched up in 1935 with the Southwest Conference title and a trip to the Rose Bowl on the line. The Mustangs jumped out to a 14-0 lead but TCU came back and tied the score at 14 going into the 4th quarter. With 8 minutes left in the game, SMU lined up for a punt on 4th and 4 on the TCU 37 but instead heaved a ball towards the end zone which was caught by Bobby Wilson. SMU would win the game 20-14, and the trip to the Rose Bowl netted the school $85,000 which they used to pay off the mortgage on Ownby Stadium.
1949 vs Oregon (Cotton Bowl): SMU won their first Cotton Bowl behind legends Doak Walker and Kyle Rote, beating PCC Champion Oregon and Norm Van Brocklin by a score of 21-13. Walker had a 79 yard punt in this game while Rote added a 84 yarder. The two teams combined for almost 500 yards rushing and 250 yards passing in an offensive showdown.
1980 at Texas: The Texas Longhorns came into this game a heavy favorite but SMU would turn the tables on them in the debut of the Pony Express. Lance McIlhenny would get his first start as a freshman and did not disappoint, leading the Mustangs to a 20-6 victory. The win propelled the Mustangs to an 8-3 record and a trip to the Holiday Bowl, and set off a dominating 5 year stretch in which SMU went 49-9-1.
1983 vs Pittsburgh (Cotton Bowl): SMU was coming off back to back SWC titles and facing a loaded Pittsburgh team led by Dan Marino. Pittsburgh was leading 3-0 in the 4th quarter when SMU marched down the field, finishing off the drive with a keeper by QB Lance McIhenny for the only touchdown of the game. SMU would finish the season ranked #2 in the AP Poll (just behind Penn State), finishing with a record of 11-0-1.
2009 vs Nevada (Hawaii Bowl): 20 seasons after the end of the Death Penalty and 25 seasons after their last bowl appearance, the Mustangs found themselves in Hawaii taking on the Nevada Wolfpack. SMU entered the game as an 11 point underdog and was picked by nearly everyone outside of Dallas to lose the game, but QB Kyle Padron blistered the Nevada secondary for 460 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 45-10 rout. It made for an awesome Christmas.
Greatest Plays: - 1935 vs TCU (The $85,000 Pass): See Greatest Games. - 1982 vs Texas Tech (Miracle on Fourth Avenue): SMU entered the game ranked #2 in the nation with a perfect 9-0 record but needed a "Miracle" to escape Lubbock with a win. Trailing by 3 with 4 minutes to play, the Red Raiders drove down the field and kicked a field goal with 17 seconds to go to tie the score at 27. The ensuing squid kick was fumbled by SMU before it was picked up by Blane Smith, who threw a lateral across the field to Bobby Leach. Leach raced up the sideline for a 91 yard touchdown return, clinching a share of the SWC title (they would win it outright the following week with a tie against Arkansas). - 1983 vs Pittsburgh (McIlhenny Touchdown): See Greatest Games. - 1989 vs Connecticut (Miracle on Mockingbird): 1989 saw the return of football to the SMU campus and their first win came at the expense of the Huskies. Trailing 23-7 at halftime, the Mustangs started to comeback and found themselves trailing by just 6 with less than two minutes to go. With mere seconds to go, QB Mike Romo scrambled to his left before finding Michael Bowen in the end zone as time expired. SMU won the game 31-30. Greatest Players:
Doak Walker (1945, 1947-1949): The greatest football player in SMU history, Doak Walker was a three-time All American, winner of the 1947 Maxwell Award and the 1948 Heisman Trophy. He was an all-purpose player for the Mustangs, playing running back, defensive back and place kicker. His popularity was so great that SMU began playing its home games in the Cotton Bowl in 1948 and the stadium had to be expanded from a capacity of 45,000 to 75,000, making it known as "The House That Doak Built". The Doak Walker Award bears his name, given annually to the best running back in college football, and he has a statue on campus. He went on to have an outstanding NFL career, winning two NFL championships with the Detroit Lions.
Kyle Rote (1948-1950): Another outstanding running back, Kyle Rote was an All-American in 1950 and finished second in the Heisman voting. His most notable game was against a juggernaut Notre Dame team in 1949 - with Doak Walker out with an injury, Rote ran for 115 yards and passed for 146 in a close 27-20 loss to the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame would later honor him as an "Honorary Member" of their championship team. He went on the play 11 years in the NFL with the New York Giants.
Don Meredith (1957-1959): A two-time All American, Meredith was one of the best players to ever play under center for SMU. He led the SWC in passing completion in each of his 3 seasons as the starting quarterback, and was later named one of the 10 most exciting players in SWC history. He went on the play for the Dallas Cowboys for 9 years and was a 3-time Pro Bowl selection. He worked as a color commentator for Monday Night Football in his post-football career as well as an actor.
Jerry LeVias (1966-1968): Three time All-SWC and an All American as a senior, LeVias is best known as the first African-American scholarship player in Southwest Conference history. Blessed with blazing speed, he led SMU to their first SWC title since the days of Doak Walker in 1966 and finished his career with a win over Oklahoma in the 1968 Bluebonnet Bowl. LeVias faced many hurdles throughout his career, and struggles during the desegregation of college football were later highlighed in a documentary. He would play 6 years professionally.
Eric Dickerson (1979-1982): One of the best running backs in Southwest Conference history, Dickerson made a name for himself in the 1980's as part of the "Pony Express", a nickname given to SMU's dominating rushing attack. Dickerson and the Mustangs would dominate other teams with their rushing attack. He finished his college career with 4,450 yards and 48 touchdowns and was a two-time All American. He spent 11 years in the NFL, most notably with the Los Angeles Rams. His record of 2,105 rushing yards in a single season still stands after a certain OU running back fell just short this last season.
Greatest Coaches:
Matty Bell (1935-1941, 1945-1949): Led the Mustangs to a a 79-40-8 record, 3 Southwest Conference titles and the 1935 National Championship. Also served as SMU's Athletic director from 1950-1964.
Hayden Fry (1962-1972): While he is more known for his career at Iowa, Fry was instrumental in integrating the SWC with the recruitment of Jerry Levias. Under Fry, SMU won the 1966 Southwest Conference title.
Ron Meyer (1976-1981): Took SMU to heights it had never seen before, leading SMU to the 1981 SWC title with a 10-1-0 record. He would go on to coach in the NFL for serveral seasons for the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts.
Bobby Collins (1982-1986): Continued on Meyer's success, as SMU finished #2 in the nation in in 1982. Won the 1982 and 1984 SWC titles and compiled a 43-14-1 record in his 5 seasons before the Death Penalty and the suspension of the SMU football program.
Forrest Gregg (1989-1990): A standout SMU football player in the 1950's and a legendary player for the Green Bay Packers, Gregg was asked to do what had never been done before - rebuild a football program from scratch. Undermanned and outsized, Gregg and the post-death penalty Mustangs have a special place in the hearts of my fans.
Traditions
SMU's tailgating scene is known as The Boulevard, which started when football returned to campus in 2000. Free beer, music, food and people-watching makes for a good time. The only problem with it is convincing fans to leave and head towards the football game before kickoff. It's modeled The Grove at Ole Miss.
SMU's mascot Peruna will run across the field after touchdowns and at the end of each quarter.
The Mustang Band will regularly change uniforms before and during football games. They are known as "The Best-Dressed Band in the Land" and have more than 30 uniform combinations to choose from for each game. They are to bands what the Oregon Ducks are to football. The band specializes in jazz music.
Each season a player is selected to wear the #23 jersey in honor of Jerry LeVias (currently LB Stephon Sanders).
The SMU hand signal is "Pony Ears", which is made by slightly curling the index and middle fingers. If you curl too far it looks like TCU's and no one wants that.

Snuffer's: Great burgers and the cheddar fries are pure awesome. I would advise against playing intramural soccer directly after eating here, however - I found out the hard way.
Campisi's Egyptian Restaurant: Italian restaurant located across the expressway from SMU with a few other locations throughout Dallas. The pizza is good.
Eatzi's: European-market style with a bunch of prepared foods. Last time I went there for dinner I ended up buying food for about 4 meals.
Random Trivia
The team was originally nicknamed "The Parsons" due to a large number of theological students on the team. They were given the name "Mustangs" by Dorothy Amann, secretary of the president of the university, when she was watching the team practice and exclaimed "Why, out there, on the football field, it looks just like a bunch of wild Mustangs!"
Legend has it that the Ford Motor Company named the Ford Mustang after SMU, after Lee Iacocca saw SMU play at Michigan in 1963. "Today," Iacocca said, "after watching the SMU Mustangs play with such flair, we reached a decision. We will call our new car the Mustang. Because it will be light, like your team. It will be quick, like your team. And it will be sporty, like your team." Coach Hayden Fry bough the first Ford Mustang ever made for $1.
SMU colors are Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue. I'll let you figure that one out.
"The Hilltop" is SMU's nickname, as the campus was built on a hill.
SMU's mascot, Peruna, has an interesting history. In 1935 he traveled to New York City as SMU was taking on Fordham. After taking a cab to the stadium, Peruna I met Fordham's mascot on the field and kicked and killed the ram. A week later Peruna I died when he wandered off onto Mockingbird lane and was killed by a speeding car. The name Peruna derives from a popular "cure-all" tonic. (There are also rumors that Peruna tried to mount Texas Tech's horse and knocked Bevo to the ground with a kick.)
A Texas A&M cadet once tried to stab a SMU cheerleader.
"Mustang Mania" was a promotion program in the late 1970's which saw Dallas overrun with SMU stickers, advertisements, music, shirts and more. It resulted in an surge in popularity and attendance for the football program.
Of course SMU is the only program to be ever leveled with the Death Penalty. The "30 for 30" film Pony Excess, directed by Thaddeus D. Mattula, goes into the rise, fall and rebirth of the SMU football program.
What is and What is to Come In the beginning, there was football, and it was good. And then the 1980's came, and in a whirlwind of cash, drugs and horrible fashion choices, the football went away. For twenty years SMU football struggled to break free of the Death Penalty, and it was an ugly 20 years. The dissolution of the Southwesten Conference, watching your rival excel like never before, suffering a winless season ... the list goes on. And then 2009 came and SMU went bowling and cast aside the demons that had plagued them for so long. Heading into 2012, it seemed like SMU was ready to build again on the 3 straight bowl appearances and challenge for a conference championship. With former standout recruit Garrett Gilbert taking over under center and Zach Line entering his senior season, it looked like the Run and Shoot would finally take off like it did for June Jones in Hawaii for all those years. And with several quality players on defensive, SMU looked to be in as good of shape as it had been in years (although an injury in the secondary prior to the season loomed large). (One odd tibit of the 2012 offseason was June Jones seemingly taking the head coaching position at Arizona State, only to have their students and alumni revolt which such passion that his offer was rescinded not two hours after he agreed to it. This came on the same day that SMU announced it was joining the Big East, which made for a busy afternoon on the message boards.) SMU would finish the 2012 season 6-6 (5-3) record. There were a lot of games that were out of hand one way or the other - 9 of the games were decided by an average of 31.6 points. The 3 games that were close: the TCU game, which was played in a monsoon and saw both teams struggle to move the ball; the Tulane game, which saw SMU fall on a last second touchdown to a team that was riding a 15 game losing streak; and the Tulsa game. The Tulsa game was the biggest win of the year, given Tulsa being undefeated in conference play and SMU actually needing the win for bowl eligiblity. SMU actually led the game by 29 points before Tulsa put the fear of God into everyone at Ford Stadium, as noted above. The season was capped off with another blow out, of course - SMU demolished Fresno state 43-10 in the Hawaii Bowl. And now SMU heads into 2013 with another daunting out of conference schedule (Texas A&M and TCU return, and Baylor is swapped out for Texas Tech) along with a new set of conference mates to play against - some new faces, some old. SMU fans would love for the program to take the next step but it certainly won't be easy without marked improvement on both sides of the ball. The level of frustration with the Run and Shoot is high right now as it hasn't produced the offense that Mustang fans envisioned when Jones was hired. As of now, another 6-7 wins is probably the expectation - anything more would be a success, while anything less would have SMU fans calling for changes. Overtime
PonyFans.com is a fan site I have helped run for the past decade. I obviously have a lot of free time on my hands.
CountingPosts.com is another place for a more lighthearted discussion of SMU athletics.
Lots of sci-fi robots argue with each other. Is this plausible? Imagine five blind robots touching different parts of an elephant. Maybe at least initially they are arguing about what they are touching, but if they are moderately intelligent then one of them will quickly suggest that they put their heads together. Networking their brains will allow each robot to feel what all the other robots are feeling. Essentially they will transform into a super-robot with more hands, brains and information than any of the individual robots. This super-robot's superior grasp of reality will allow it to quickly reach the correct conclusion. Most sci-fi robots don't seem to see the merits of putting their heads together. The biggest exception is the Borg. Actually, arguing itself is simply a primitive way for individuals to put their heads together. So the Borg see the merits of more effectively putting their heads together. Let's do a better job of putting our heads together? That sure sounds pretty reasonable. The devil is in the details. It isn't likely that each Borg continually sees/hears/feels what all the other Borg are seeing/hearing/feeling. If there are a million Borg, for each one it would be like trying to watch a million screens at the same time. It would be the epitome of information overload. Therefore... prioritization. The way it works for a beehive is that, when a forager finds a particularly valuable flower patch, she transmits this information to the other bees by dancing. Since she perceives the patch to be so valuable, she will dance very energetically for it, and her willingness to sacrifice so many of her precious calories for the patch will persuade the onlooking bees that they should take the time and make the effort to inspect it for themselves. Essentially, the bees use spending to rank things. Here on Reddit though we use voting to rank things. Spending and voting are very different things, so they can't be equally effective at putting our heads together. Right now the Libertarian Party is using donations to rank potential convention themes. How differently would the themes have been ranked by voting? Would they have been better ranked? Some of you have probably heard of Boaty McBoatface. Would a better name have been selected if voting had been replaced with donating? Compare the top-ranked content on Youtube to the top-ranked content on Honest Cash. The highest ranked story on HC is about crypto, the second ranked story is about a guy who donates his programming skills to worthy crypto projects, and the third ranked story is about censorship (the author cites J.S. Mill). What are the top-ranked Youtube videos about? Pewdiepie playing video games? Rap music videos? Democracies and markets are two very different systems for groups of people to collectively grasp reality, but each system highlights very different parts of reality, so the conclusions are very different. Which conclusion is correct? Recently I offered to bet the economist Bryan Caplan $100 bucks that, within 5 years, market social websites (MSWs ie Honest Cash) will, or will not, replace democratic social websites (DSWs ie Reddit) as the dominant platform. I am willing to bet him $100 bucks either way. It would be very information to see whether he is willing to bet on, or against, MSWs. If he doesn't want to bet at all, then this will also be informative. Anybody a fan of Isaac Arthur?
Nonetheless there are tons of examples of good hive minds in science fiction, especially when telepathy seemed to be an omnipresent feature even in hard science fiction novels, a trend I’m glad finally died off in the last couple decades, but common or not, rarely do I hear folks speaking of them with enthusiasm. Pretty much the only member of a Hive Mind in fiction I like is Nevil Clavain from the Revelation Space series, it probably helps that he’s a viewpoint character who joined semi-voluntarily, never upgrades his implants from the earlier versions that were less connected, and is often on bad terms with his own faction, the Conjoiners, so he doesn’t exactly cheerlead for them. They also don’t indiscriminately spread and assimilate folks involuntarily either. Interestingly Clavain’s faction in the books is often in conflict with the other faction of humanity that is closest to being a hive mind too, the Demarchists. They are more of a bunch of intelligences who are networked, so to speak, as like most people they have a ton of mental implants but one of theirs, and the key one for their specific civilization, is one that tries to go straight democracy, no representatives, by having everyone vote on almost everything. Sort of like if every bill in congress got text messaged to you for a vote, only as best I can tell the implants allow them to do it mostly subconsciously and even asleep. I’m assuming the implants in everyone’s head know them individually well enough to guess how they’d respond. Forgetting the specific mechanics, that is kind of the idea of most versions of democracy and its parallels, everyone gets a say in what happens because everyone has an investment in the outcome and a right to self-determination, so networking folks to make news and details easier to get and absorb to make more informed decisions seems ideal. Obviously taken too far you get a hive mind where nobody gets any say in anything because there’s no individuality leftover. - Isaac Arthur, Hive Minds
Arthur would be a lot higher ranked if Youtube was a MSW instead of a DSW.
Before I get cracking on tonight’s post I just have to give some props to Coyle1096 for taking the time to compile all my goalie recommendations into one nice little spreadsheet for convenient viewing pleasure. You could say I was a little surprised that the numbers were as strong as they are, as relying on waiver wire goaltending can be a very volatile game. Comparing to the stats in my flair keeper league the 2.34 GAA would be good for a 4th place ranking, the 46 Wins would place 7th, 8 shutouts would tied for 3rd overall, and .911 SV% would be tied for 10th overall. All in all I’d say if you’ve relied on some of my suggestions for streams, my hope is that it’s given you a leg up over your competition. Tonight I’m taking a peek at a trio of waiver wire defensemen that might be overlooked at this point in the season and one forward who may see an uptick in minutes with two leading scorers. Tonight’s Nightly Nuggets:
Jason Spezza hitting the IR could be a great thing for Valeri Nichushkin owners (what few there are left). He’s shown flashes in stints with the top line, but there really hasn’t been much of an opportunity for the young Russian to stick next to Seguin and Benn. Part of the reason for the lack of production is his usage, just under 14 minutes per game, so really not enough for someone of his skill level to get a lot of chances, though 4 SOG in 16 minutes last night is a good sign in my eyes. He’s worth a speculative add in deeper formats, though 10 team leagues may want to wait until he starts showing some tangible production before making the move.
I snagged Hampus Lindholm for his B2B set and was rewarded with 2 goals (1 on the PP), 9 SOG, and a pair of HITS to boot. Not too shabby at all. The young defender has, like many Ducks this year, struggled to score consistently (just 14 points in 49 games), but with the Ducks on a 6 game win streak the points are starting to come fast and furious for the team many (myself included) thought to be a Stanley Cup contender. Lindholm probably won’t see much of an uptick in goals production as his 6.1% SH% is right in line with his career numbers (5.9%), so most of his value is going to be gathering more assists as the Ducks offense continues to find it’s scoring touch. He is owned in 31% of Y! leagues, and is well worth a look as a #4 D for the rest of the season as many will write him off after just 1 point in December and 4 points in November.
Morgan Rielly has been one of those players who has seen a role catered to making him a better player overall. I really applaud Mike Babcock for sticking with his guns and using Rielly as purely a shutdown guy, even to the detriment to his fantasy game. I love watching the kid play and think his potential is a top-15 defenseman in fantasy in a couple years. Over the last few games however, we’ve seen Rielly getting time on the PP (average of 53.6% available mins). All said, Rielly is on pace for a career high 37 points and has seen his role and minutes increase over his three seasons, which is a great sign for his future. He should be owned in more leagues, but given his typical defensive role it’s understandable he isn’t.
If you’re looking for a solid defensive stream to gain an advantage with the B2B games this weekend why not take a peek at Andrej Sekera? Since the return of McJesus, Sekera has 3 points (1 G and 2 A) all on the PP. How’s that for efficient? The SOG totals have been pretty consistent for the last month (solidly around 3 per game), so even after a disappointing January that saw just 2 points, Sekera makes a solid target now that he’s seeing PP time as the lone defenseman with all the young phenoms of the Oilers, so that is a definitely value boost. It’d be nice to see his overall minutes per game show some consistency as they’ve fluctuated too wildly to rely on him nightly. Looking at his resume, it’s clear his 2013/14 career high of 44 points was based on some really good luck, but I don’t think it’s out of the realm for Sekera to finish in the 35 point range with a good finish to the year.
A Goalie For Tonight - I’m sure it’ll be a HNIC broadcast so I’ll be watching, but I’d feel comfortable picking on the Habs for one more night. Cam Talbot (at MTL) is lining up across from whipping boy Ben Scrivens tonight, and with the way the Eberle-McDavid combo has rejuvenated the Oilers I’d say there is no safer stream match on the slate.
A Goalie For Tomorrow - I’m not exactly floored by any of the match-ups on the board for streaming purposes. Either Cam Ward or Eddie Lack (at MTL) will get the Habs on the second half of the B2B, which is likely the best bet on the slate. Though there is also Thomas Greiss (vs. EDM) who hasn’t played since Jan 12th and could show some rust against the Oilers, so tread lightly if you are desperate for his start.
I’m here at work until 3 EST today, but I’ll be checking in to answer questions all evening, so get them in and enjoy your weekend!
I typically have read this sub every other day for the past year, like many of you. Some of these things i may have missed discussions about. Some were possibly speculated upon at the Cantina or by MSW, sw7n, et al. I just want to point out a few things that caught me off guard, that may have been revealed today. Maybe one of them can spawn new ideas. Feel free to correct me if they are not new things to this sub.
EXT NIGHT - 01 - SPACE - SAVANNAH • A Sword tumbles through space, crashes toward ground
I see a lot of fussing over this... Is it impossible that it's simply tumbling through clouds on Bespin? Slow motion, maybe dream sequence, etc... This saber is the beginning, middle and end of the film, the whole reason Kylo got out of bed that morning.
EXT NIGHT - 22 - OUTSKIRTS OF THE VILLAGE • Poe picks a fight with Kylo Ren
Odd! Why go to all the trouble of a secret mission, to turn it into a suicide mission? This must be a diversion to get the LS/bb8 away.
INT NIGHT - 129 - MILLENNIUM FALCON - INTERIOUR • Finn gets to talk Han Solo round.
What could possibly change a hardened smuggler's mind? Finn must mention that he worked with Kylo?
EXT DAY - 184 - TUNNEL OF LOVE • Emissary from Leia looks up to see what's coming EXT NIGHT - 185 - FAR AWAY FROM TUNNEL OF LOVE • Tunnel Of Love meets its fate
Tunnel of Love = Castle? It could be read either way. Does Starkiller Base knock down castles without even killing all occupants? From across the galaxy? And.. That's it? I don't think so, because just after this, everyone sits down for storytime AT the castle.. So SK target is seen by everyone outside the Castle... Maybe a nearby moon/sun?
INT DAY - 187 - KYLO REN'S SHUTTLE • Kylo Ren watches The Catapult's work
Red beam w/kylo at window on bridge
INT DAY - 188 - RESISTANCE BASE - MAP ROOM • Leia and staff react to Tunnel of Love unhappy ending EXT DAY - 189 - CASTLE - COURTYARD • Maz Kanata and Han Solo watch the horror. Maz Kanata decides to help EXT DAY - 190 - LANDING PAD JOURNEY • Plates as required for Maz Kanata journey to Maz Kanta's Castle EXT DAY - 192 - SAVANNAH • Reprise Hand takes sword, we reveal Naka ... INT DAY - 208 - CASTLE • Maz Kanata walks the group through the Castle interiour EXT NIGHT - 209 - CASTLE • Kylo Ren and his Knights at campfire. Maz Kanata steals sword INT DAY - 210 - CASTLE STAIRCASE • Walking down stairs, Maz Kanata reveals she stole it.
Perhaps the KoR sought refuge at Maz's castle long ago, which is when she had the oppportunity to steal the LS. Her powers knew its importance, perhaps. I cant think of any explanation of how it ended up with LST on Jakku, can you?
INT DAY - 215 - CASTLE - UNDERGROUND CHAMBER • Maz Kanata explains her journey through many lives
!!!! She has lived more than one life? This is crazy. This is great, and crazy. I bet she knows Luke. Anyway, why the hesitance to help out? What is her end game? I am looking forward to Maz.
INT DAY - 239 - RESISTANCE BASE - MAP ROOM • Han Solo and Leia disagree. C3PO explains what's wrong with R2D2
R2 is mentioned only 3 times. When Luke leaves academy, here, and at the end when droids solve a puzzle
EXT EVE - 314 -STARKILLER BASE - VERY TOP OF RAMPARTS • Finn & Rey arrive at top of Ramparts, see last of X-Wings fall
All xwings down... Any chance Poe dies?
INT DAY - 337 - RESISTANCE BASE - MAP ROOM • C3PO, R2-D2, and BB-8 solve the puzzle together.
R2 hasso much of the puzzle that something's wrong with him, and bb8 has the rest from his time w/the bespin saber? Also.. All of Snoke's appearances are in the Great Hall @ SK base. I wonder if he is physically present? It seems so.
This Week in Michiana: The Triumphant Return - 11/14-11/20
I've been off my game the past couple weeks, when it comes to sharing events on /southbend. I apologize for this, but it's for good reason - I've actually started finding (paying!) work in Social Media in town, and I've been getting accustomed to my new work load. On that note, I may be passing the torch soon. I've spoken with a couple friends that I trust very much to manage well a weekly events calendar. One is the lovely MoxieGhoul, who has been maintaining the google calendar that has helped me so much in constructing the text to post here. The other is an active socialite in the DTSB scene, who I consistently run into at all the hip events (Moxie's pretty much tied to the State Theater, I'm sad to say - though she makes it all the more pleasant the two or so times a week I end up there for an evening). As it stands, there is nothing stopping any of you from constructing one yourself. All I'd ask is that, once an events thread has been posted for a given week, you post your list as a response to that thread. With that all said... let's begin! Thursday, 11/14/13! 5pm - Public Talk by journalist Virginia Black @ Chocolate Cafe
"The American Association of University Women (AAUW) invites its members and the public to hear Virginia Black, South Bend Tribune writer, discuss her experiences writing about such topics as child abuse, poverty, and mental illness." April Lidinsky endorses it, that's good enough for me.
I've been going to these every month since the 'National Day of Civic Hacking' in June. It's a terrific group of people. The Branch is on the 4th floor of the JMS building, above the Main Street Cafe.
I attended many of the Seitz & Sounds events over the summer. My roommate's band Marcus and the Nomadic Crocadiles performed there at one point. Good music, good people - order the Mac and Cheese (crawdads or andouille sausage!).
I've done yoga many times, an' I'm a fat, inflexible, out of shape bearded hipster. What's your excuse? If you're the kinda dude that would only go to Yoga to stare at women's asses, this ain't the place for you - but then again, neither is co-ed Yoga thank-you-very-much.
I was lucky enough to be on the Core Team for Ignite 2. What an incredible event. Jennifer, who led the charge, has just launched her own events management company, "Detailed Productions, LLC" - I strongly recommend her for what she does. I'm really impressed. Anyhow, if you missed it, they're doing a redux at The Well on Thursday. Here's the lineup:
Arielle Schmitt - Full Contact Roller Derby - Blocker, South Bend Roller Girls
Christopher Stackowicz - Aesthetic Preoccupations - Spatial Transformation Specialist
Alesha D. Seroczynski, Ph.D. - Reading for Life: Restoring Virtue in Lost Youth - Executive Director, Reading for Life
Megan Chandler - Stop & Listen - Manager, The Well (Non-Profit Coffeehouse)
Frank Bouchard - No More Excuses: Strategies for Getting Outside in Michiana - Biologist, University of Notre Dame
Jan Pilarski - Fishy Business - Co-Founder and CEO,Green Bridge Growers
Joel B. Langston - My Dear Sweet Digital Game-Based Learning - Manager, Media Services, IUSB
Mara Diane Trionfero, MSW - Fighting for the Common Good, with stickers - Community organizer, Tsarina of Wish Stickers
Keith Sarber - Reclaim Soap, Reclaim Life - Head Soap Maker at United Way of St Joseph County
Chuck Bueter presented at the very first Ignite event, and was the speaker at our inaugural Science Cafe event 3 months ago - an event that spawned off of Ignite. He's running the 'Comet Festival' - an' if ya ain't heard about it yet, I encourage you to look into it. Anyhow, he rounded up some talented, brilliant folks to do a presentation.
"When a hidden diary was found, Gabrielle began researching her grandfather's life during the war, only to discover a very difficult fact: he had been a member of the Nazi party. Reading from her book, The Reluctant Nazi. Third Floor Bridge, Wiekamp Hall. Free and open to the public, refreshments and conversation to follow."
"Tickets for the IU South Bend Wind Ensemble are available for $5-$9 through the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts box office. Tickets for students and children are free of charge. For more information and to order tickets visit arts.iusb.edu or call the Box Office at 574.520.4203."
Fri, 11/15 Well, All day Fri, Sat and Sun is the Michiana Startup Weekend. I hope I can convince someone there to liveblog it here... Anyway, I think ticket sales are closed, but if you're intrigued by it, I strongly encourage you to try to sneak in. I bet you could buy a last-minute ticket if you e-mail the right person. I'd wager I could put you in touch with that person. I did Startup Weekend at ND earlier this year, and it was such an informative experience. The experience has proven invaluable in starting my own consulting business. 7PM - Friday Night Swing @ TMV
Anna McCoy's been doin' a fantastic job of organizing Swing lessons & dancing at ND and at The Music Village this semester. If'n ya ain't a lazy fuck, try it out. I did swing dancing back in the late 90's and loved it. Met a lot of good people back then too. I'm hoping to make it around for this one, I've been interested in all the previous events, but ain't made it out t'none yet.
"Last weekend's Sandhill Crane Trip was awesome, so we are going back! Come witness a dazzling display of thousands of migrating birds. We will be meeting at Frank and I's house [click the above link for address] at 1:30 pm to carpool to Jasper Pulaski park. If you would like to stay overnight, we have rented a cabin for the night at Tippecanoe River State Park which will cost between $6-12 depending on the number of people. In the morning, we will go watch the birds and do some hiking. Otherwise, feel free to just stay to watch the birds and take off Saturday night. Please comment on the event if you are planning to do the overnight or just stay for the day. If you are staying overnight, bring a sleeping bag, some water and a bit of food. We will likely eat out for dinner but you might want some more food for the morning. This is pretty spectacular, even if you are not a birder. Come out and have an awesome time!!!" Frank and Kerry really kick ass with these. You can go for the day, or camp overnight. Check out Frank's Ignite talk at The Well on Thursday if you wanna get some face time and learn a bit more before you commit.
If you're a photographer, videographer, screenwriter, actor, set designer, craftsman, or have any interest in producing youtube videos... join the MAF. This is a good opportunity to network with the folks there. Plus, hey, homegrown art. Here's the promo for Doug Unhitched, one of the films they'll be showing.
"Tickets for the Euclid Quartet are available in advance to adults for $10 and to senior citizens for $7. Tickets are $2 more at the door and are free to students and children. For tickets and more information visit arts.iusb.edu or call the box office at 574.520.4203."
I caught Tim Dudley's routine at The State a month or two back. If you're an Elvis fan, you're in for a good show. If you've never seen an Elvis Impersonator before... well, it's something you ought to do sometime in your life.
I can't vouch for Ace Reporter, but LangLab shows are always a good time. Dena Woods (of 'The Pool' - and another Ignite alumn) is performing as special guest. She'll be fresh back from Chicago, where she's performing earlier this weekend. I've asked her to do an AMA here on Reddit, she's
8PM - Michiana Skeptics Presents: Skeptic Poker
This's at a member's house, so it's not really a public event, but I thought I'd point out that the Michiana Skeptics are getting more active. If you're an atheist, skeptic, secular humanist or otherwise interested in the sorts of conversations these folk have, join th'group an' you'll start gettin' invites to hip events like this.
Another April Lidinsky event. She runs the Gender Studies program at IUSB, and she's a powerhouse in this town. The Transgender event last week was a packed house, standing room only - and was extremely informative.
Green Drinks ranks up there with 3 Degrees, so far as monthly meetups in this town goes. Sustainability-minded folks and high-minded conversations. I missed last months, on account of embarassing myself the month before (vomited a LOT of wine up on the sidewalk outside Professor Mike Keen's house... it's a long story). But I digress. Purple Porch, Edible Michiana and The Unity Gardens will be the 'Conversation Starters' for the evening. This is a strong recommendation.
I have always been told I am very good at helping friends with their problems...I also really like psychology and love conducting psychological research!
That we all wear sweaters and talk super sensitively. Also that you have to cry in therapy to make progress. Also that we are their to judge and analyze you. Basically Freudian psychology is dead and almost all of therapy is focused on developing more effective coping skills/behaviors. We rarely ever analyze people in the traditional sense.
Having someone commit suicide is a constant concern and is very scary both from a legal and emotional perspective. It can also really hurt your career. For the most part though your concern is that you care about your clients and you will feel like you failed them if they commit/attempt suicide. You can also get sued if someone kills themselves which is an extra kick in the shin after the fact. We are not really trained for it, more trained on what to do to stop it from happening and how to look for the signs.
I really like personality disorders. Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Schizoid Personality disorder are both very interesting. I also really like vocational issues. People spend most of their lives at work yet we rarely look at this area of psychology.
I once worked with a kid who had OCD but his obsessive thoughts were related incest within his family. He engaged in repetitive thoughts to get rid of the incestuous thoughts and fantasies. It was like torture for him because he could not get rid of the thoughts without engaging in ritualistic behaviors. He was also very religious which made the case much more complicated due to shame and guilt.
It wasn't really sexual at all....he just felt shame about the thought coming up for him and then it endlessly cycled between shame, incestuous thought, and then shame again.
I can't provide much more proof because I don't want to break confidentiality by revealing who I am or where I live....I hope the consistent quality of my answers is proof enough. You can also quiz me if you want.
I don't consider it an issue at all. Being transgendetranssexual is a lifestyle choice not a pathology. It is societies lack of acceptance which gives these individuals all the trouble they face!
There is a huge stigma....HUGE! even among health care providers such as doctors and nurses. They often feel if they refer someone to us they are essentially calling them crazy! To fight it I feel like we have to normalize the process and be more open about talking about it. We also need to stop attributing everything to attention seeking and laziness/weakness.
Medication for more severe pathology is essential. For everyday stuff like depression, anxiety, stress, it is no more effective than therapy and alot more expensive in the long run. It is also not a very effective method of long term treatment.
Most rewarding experience was working with a man who had multiple systems atrophy. I would go to house and work with him each week and he would tell me stories about his life even though he couldn't move. I felt like I really made his life better.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. You work on the Negative Cognitive schema they have developed. This is essentially a negative style of thought they use that perpetuates itself.
Implicit processing can't do anything. The term processing is just a construct we use for the way the brain organizes thoughts. It is not "Real" and certainly does not "make choices" to maintain a mood. The body reacts to the environment, it does not choose to maintain a mood. The environment causes us to have a mood and our body reacts.
As far as the difference between explicit processing and implicit processing I have no idea how one would divide this. Our brain does one type of processing. Only us humans name it differently for us to understand the complexity.
If you read Aaron Beck he explains what I think this guy is getting at in much more simple terms. This sounds like someone who is trying very hard to get to the nitty gritty of why cognitive therapy works for depression. Its good work to be done, but as far as being a therapist all I care about are actual techniques I can use. Since I cannot go inside someones mind and change the way they implicitly process information this article would not be very helpful to me. You have to remember, unless I can do it in the therapy room in 1 hour a week its not gonna work.
My point is that Freud had different terms for it, so did Jung, and so did Adler, and Beck, and Ellis, and everyone else under the sun. None of them are correct because they are just conceptual models of understanding the brain. And no unconscious drives are not central to Beck's theory. Beck's theory comes from how we process information incorrectly...not that we secretly and unconsiously want it to be incorrect to meet some unconscious need.
Also if your talking about "the unconscious" it is much older than Freud my friend.
I would say go ask professors about opportunities for research experience. All profs a required to do research and they love when students ask to help! You are aloud to shadow at almost all places. You may just need to sign a confidentiality agreement. I shadowed for a year at a children's hospital and wasn't aloud to talk in therapy, but could participate in discussion afterwards. It is hard because there are way more students than their are positions. Its because there are some schools out there (terrible schools) which are puppy mills for psychologists. My class only has 4 people in it. Some schools push out 100 psychologists a year and they flood the market and take away all the good spots.
It is part of my training. You have to do a certain number of practicum hours before you can graduate. I have donn 20 + hours a week for the past 4 years. Most heartbreaking case has to do with severe abuse. I worked with a girl who was abused by her father for many many years. It was essentially torture. The dad died very young which left the girl feeling both morning for her father but also guilt for feeling happy he was dead.
Okay, I am trying to figure out how to provide proof without potentially revealing myself and hence breaking confidentiality. I would take a picture of my masters degree but I am not home.
Also I don't really provide recommendations. For the most part I help people find their own answers. I try to provide a safe environment where I person feels like they can be open and honest about their feelings. If I just told people how to fix their life I would be like every other person in their life.
Your job is to step into their shoes so I would say their is no such thing as being overly influenced. Being a caring person who is open to diversity and other perspectives.
3.66......I had a considerable amount of clinical and research experience. My advice is follow your heart. Don't worry about money. What will make you more fulfilled!?
Every federals prison has many psychologists that work at it to do just this! I am not sure how helpful it is because I am not familiar with research. I really think the problem is that negative punishment (going to jail) is a really ineffective way of teaching anyone anything. Positive reinforcement is the best way. We would be better off paying criminals 1000 bucks a year for every year they stay out of trouble. I know it seems very odd because of morality (we shouldn't pay criminals), but it would be more effective than locking everyone up from a psychological perspective.
Thats a complicated one....the recommended treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy in conjunction with interpersonal processing therapy. What this means is working both on the thoughts and behavior that contribute to the eating disorder...but also working on how control in relationships and in life works for you. Most times eating disorders come down to people being overly controlling in situations where they feel like they don't have alot of control. So they control the one thing they can...which is their body. Its like a silent protest. Also the media and girl on girl pressure is a major contributor. So deconstructing that peer pressure is really important as well. Overall I would say that a therapist who does not explore underlying causes is doing a half ass job...
Getting into programs are highly competitive. usually programs accept 4-8 people per year. I wanted a program which had a big emphasis in multiculturalism and was APA accredited. They also had high rates for APA internship placement. My program helped me alot financially, but now grad students no longer have access to subsidized loans...which will make it harder. Even mix on BA and MA when applying.
For the most part no. If I get frustrated I just always think that I must be feeling a small part of the frustration they feel with themselves every day. Most really depressed people really hate that their mind works the way it does. I realize my frustration is a really good way to get in touch with empathy for them.
Yes all the time. Your using the term correctly as well. Behavioral therapy is a cornerstone of therapy. As therapist we reward good behavior and do not reward ineffective behavior. This is especially true when working with kids and those with special needs. Everytime you do a sticker chart with a kid you are using behavioral therapy. In fact almost every classroom in the world uses some form of rewards system. I have used it particularly with a kid I worked with who had trichotilamania (pulling out hair).
With the kid we did exposure training. Holding the hair but not pulling it out. Also discussing what different hair styles meant to her. Also she would use a journal and log each time she pulled her hair out. Every week that the number of times went down the more hair rewards she would get...things like ribbons and headbands and other fun things for her hair. Things like that.
Study hard...psychology looks easy at first but in truth it is the most complex of all the sciences. The experiments are the hardest to conduct properly your results may never come out the same!
You usually terminate therapy when they are done with therapy...so yes. I have also terminated therapy when I feel the therapy is no longer helping the client or they are not showing up for appointments.
Well you have to have either an M.A. in counseling, an MA in social work (MSW) or a Ph.D/Psy.D. in psychology to perform therapy and get licensed as a counselopsychologist.
I already have HAHAHAHA (evil laugh). no I would have to meet you and spend time with you. I would be more interested in how you few yourself than how I view you.
I think if your a good therapist this gap shouldn't exist as you should be researching your clients issues. Overall it is an issue because many therapist don't let science inform their practice. Its on the clinicians to fix that one.
CBT is not the gold standard. CBT is more like the bronze standard that consistently does not work unless supplemented with a good relationship founded on trust and multicultural competence.
This is not true....some studies have shown that therapy is more effective than therapy and medication. Likely because the person is not as motivated in therapy because they think the medication will do 50% of the work. True story.
I think therapist care alot! I also train masters level counselors. The number one thing we have to work on is keeping healthy emotional distance. That is so the session is about the client and not about the therapists and their need to help others. I can promise that outside of maybe a few sadistic psychos out there...most therapists are extremely caring people. I can also promise that not many therapist view their clients as money pots as we as a group don't make that much...
They are and this is due to insurance companies. They can pay social workers less and they can do more than just therapy. This is terrible because they are not trained as well in therapy. As always managed care is more about saving money than care for the client.
