OTB Locations Off Track Betting Near Me 2020

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas’ open world is still fantastic even after 16 years.

So over lockdown I decided to revisit what I cautiously once said was one of my favourite games of all time, based off nostalgia alone, GTA SA.
I launched the game and was in for a shock, it took me a good few hours to get used to the clunkiness (why are all rockstar games so undeniably clunky?)
Even though I was questioning the stiff and dated controls there was one thing I did find to be up to par, the open world. There are 3 main cities in the game - Los Santos (Los Angeles), San Fierro (San Francisco) and Las Venturas (Las Vegas), each of them having their own charm. I was really surprised as to just how much there was to do in the respected areas, it actually had fun activities.
You had the basic vehicle challenges with the driving schools (car, motorcycles and boats) and the racing which included rally racing and dirt tracks. If driving isn’t your thing you could challenge someone to a game of pool in the numerous bars which also featured basic arcade games or play some basketball. There was betting shops you could use to do some track betting and the large casinos in Las Venturas which included the standard roulette, blackjack, poker and the wheel of fortune.
There was numerous nightclubs to visit, burglary missions available at night that saw you break into NPCs homes, gyms to visit, marathons to race in, gang territories to take over and the vigilante, paramedic and taxi driver missions, skydiving points spread throughout high points in the world, flight schools and countless interiors to visit that made the world feel as alive as it could feel back then.
The point is, for all this to be crammed into such an old and technically limited game that’s only a few years younger than me I found to be really surprising and there’s more to do here than in some AAA open world games today.
I managed to get the platinum trophy despite a few rage inducing trophies but I regret nothing, I can safely say that this is still one of the best open world games of all time and my favourite game I’ve ever had the privilege of playing. I would honestly give my left testicle to see a true remaster of this game.

Talking about to choose a right spec for the Legion 7i was a painful experience, the Lenovo Malaysia website showing lot of confusing data ! There has alot of misleading specification in the page ! (After searching online, found out not only Malaysia, other country get same as well !) I end up waited another 3 weeks just to get the right model i wanted, and sold the earlier ordered unit when it come !

If you want to purchase this model, beware of some confusion :

1: Vapor Chamber Cooling is only available for 8-Core processor model (10875H) or RTX2070 graphic card above (model : 81YU, or 15IMHg05) ! (For Malaysia) Mean if you purchase 4 core model (like earlier 10300H Model +1660Ti) or 6 core 10750H + RTX2060 , you will get normal heat pipe cooling instead of vapor chamber ! I know it only after i sold my previous Legion 7i, which i sold it because of no G-Sync, i though it will come with Vapor Chamber, but not !

2: G-Sync only available for 8-Core model - 15IMHg05 (but not all 8-Core Model in some country) and with 144Hz display ! 240Hz display will get NO G-Sync ! Which is why i sold my 1st Legion 7i after known this issue, i sold it because it already shipped and can't cancel !

3: 240Hz Display get 100% sRGB, not 100% Adobe RGB ! The 240Hz display get lesser color than 144Hz one, and the 300nits +144hz version also come with 100% sRGB, but i cant confirm the 300nits got G-Sync or not, since all 8-core model come with 500nits display. (Some country mention that the 300nits display come with g-Sync, but only 8-Core CPU model)

4: Per Key RGB - All Legion 7i come with per key RGB, not 4-Zone RGB. Lenovo Malaysia show "4-Zone RGB" for all pre-built model included 8-Core high end model is false info. Only Custom built model it show "RGB Key Slate" Thats why i made mistake during 1st purchase !

5: DDR4 3200Mhz RAM is only available for 10875H (8-Core) model, the system come with 3200MHz out of the box, no setting required. For 6 and 4 Core model, 3200Mhz ram are installed but it will only run 2933Mhz.

6: Dont forget to choose model that come with "Free Microsoft Office" which cost RM467 ! Else, you will get Office Trial ! Normally, you can only get this select on custom built unit (Which you need to click on the office bundle during customization) . Like my model, it have 2 model number, 1 doesn't have Free Office . 81YU003MMJ will come with Office while 81YU003VMJ did not. ( Please use https://psref.lenovo.com/ to search "Legion 7" , filter the region/country to Malaysia, and get the model number with Office bundle, and add the model number in cart by using (quick add to cart), check out and you will get the free Office.

So, please choose carefully base on your need.

Quality, design, size & weight

I admit that i was a Apple fan during 2000 to something 2015, as on those day, the built quality of windows laptop just can't stand close to Mac, the awful look, bulky size, terrible track pad, dull color screen, bad battery life, below average speaker. Apple built good quality laptop especially in Steve's era, the Unibody design still look great and stable even by today standard. But recent years, Windows laptop has come closer to the gaps, some manufacture has really great quality laptop, the Lenovo Legion are one of it.

https://preview.redd.it/8pdicy3qy3i51.jpg?width=1632&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f2be784cfe6d5a69505837f91ee12ef3a1f51ed9

If you ask me to purchase Legion Y-Series before Y530, i wouldn't want to consider it, no, they are good, but just not good as after that. The look are very gamer's, the red and blue color like the laptop are from spaceship or UFO, and they usually quite bulky to name it laptop.

Thanks to Tim-Cooking Apple up, the price of Mac become more expensive, some more, the specification is making it more hard to choose. I use to gaming in a Mac, since i am not a hardcore gamers, most games i like can run in my previous 2013 15"MBP quite well, not until Apple choose AMD Discrete Graphics Card for all of it pro model, it just painful slow compare to nVidia, but wait, you must say i am dumb ass as no body will game on a Mac ! Yes, i admit that, but i like the stability of OS X (Now MacOS) , how convenience to do some serious work with the OS than Windows, and i can have both Windows and MacOS in one devices really a gain on that time. A simple restart will give you a premium PC Laptop, why not?

During 2017, i give up the MBP15 and try PC Laptop, as Windows 10 is getting better and more user friendly than before, the Legion y530 catch my attention, the built quality for plastic is simply amazing, the hardware also work very well, it make me hat off for a PC laptop, really. I know there has some brand make great laptop too. I like the way that Lenovo blend the professional look on their Legion line-up, it is so great that you can bring it to office and not forfeited the gaming ability at night.

https://preview.redd.it/4vcobxkwy3i51.jpg?width=1632&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5c890ca54b3d93eef43da528084022b27862e8bd
The Legion 7i come with the same family slang, the look are so muted during working time which only surprise you after the RGB lighting come on at night. It is great that Lenovo stick to previous design language, the Legion 7i look really premium and professional during day time. The Aluminum quality is great, but not smooth as Apple did. The surface has some rough feeling when you touch it for the first time, it like feel a raw aluminum without smooth finished, but i found out this actually an advantage after several day of usage, it did not record finger print ! Like some aluminum laptop eg Razer, the smooth aluminum actually catch a lot of finger print and skin oil.

Some ppl report that their unit has trackpad gaps, but i don't see my unit has such defect. The hinge is firm but still able to open with 1 hand, the back ccover is made of aluminum and the joint part between upper chassis is solid, no gaps and it is very straight. The build quality really up standard, and there is very little flex in whole chassis, same does the very thin aluminum screen (Thinner than Legion 5), it is very solid. Just that, since it is not built from a solid aluminum block like Razer and Mac, when you hold it, you can still feel some "free gaps" between screen and keyboard area but there has no cracking or squeezing noise, to me, it still a very much improvement, consider the price i paid.

https://preview.redd.it/0mxuxlpxy3i51.jpg?width=1632&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a2f945745f7ca6225b63317bb8ea1191e885722
This 15 inches laptop feel slim when hold it up, and the weight is fair consider the hardware and performance it packed, the thickness is somewhere like first Retina MacBook Pro 15 announced on 2012, and the weight is 2.15kg. It will be 3kg plus if included the slim 230W charger, which also Lenovo slim it very much this year, the last 230W charger ship with Y530 & Y7000 was like a brick ! Considering we got 8-Core processor, a many times powerful graphic card, 1TB of storage, in this thickness is insane compare to past ! Imagine that you get so much power on the same chassis in 2012 !

The port placement also very friendly, Lenovo put those cable-needed like power port and network port at the back of the laptop is a smart choice to me, as it will be so convenience to manage those messy cable. They arent forgot to place some port in left and right part also, which is really convenience ! Whats more, this laptop come with 5 USB port !!! Which is really a day when you want to transfer something, plug the mouse, this and that. There has 2 USB C on the left side, 1 are the thunderbolt , which also can use as USB 3, and there has a very good amount of space between 2, mean you easily plug 2 USB C at the same time.

https://preview.redd.it/i735rz81z3i51.jpg?width=1632&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a81dd60e158c3c7aa7f24597fa1951ac4440e1e6
I also want to point out something that really good are, the back side of the laptop are using plastic rather than aluminum, which is good as i dont have to worry about scratching everytime i plug or unplug something, and the symbol actually light up, i can see it very clear that what port it is, this is the premium that 5i/5Pi don't have. Overall, the design should be very comfortable to majority of user, and the size & weight is fair consider the hardware it packed, nothing can be picky against it.

Screen, Keyboard, RGB, Trackpad, Speaker, webcam

The screen is the main point sold me in for this laptop ! When i purchase Y7000SE last year, i have miss the ship to own Y740, as it only come out after i got my Y7000. As a person who come from Mac, i really want a good screen, this laptop has a very good quality 1, and it has fast refresh rate !

Lenovo advertise that this laptop pack with bright 500nits matte screen, i dont have the true number for my screen as i dont have device to measure it, but it is super bright ! I will not set the brightness over 50% during normal use, as it is more than enough even use below LED bulb environment at my office, it really bright ! I will need to set at least 80% brightness on my previous Y530/Y7000 to read the content clearly at the same environment. It should be enough if want to use it in outdoor.

https://preview.redd.it/mojlr6v4z3i51.jpg?width=1632&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3797c173d368ef4d6d9397553a15a54a60902f8d
My display manufacture are AUO 038E , and it has very great color accuracy out of the box, well, same does brightness, i dont have any device to test "how accurate" it has, it does come with X-Rite software out of the box which you can choose few profile from sRGB, Adobe RGB, DCI-P3 and Rec.709. I upload a same picture to the laptop and compare with my Note 10 plus, the color are very close, the skin tune are more natural, the color is vivid, the cloud in sky look more detail between sky. so i assume it has alot better color than my previous laptop, i even put the same MacOS wallpaper like my MacBook Pro to try, it look really close to Mac ! Compare to my previous Y530/Y7000 (both are 300nits + 144hz panel), it is night and day different. So, i am very happy to it. When the first power on, the X-Rite software has an option "restore display profile" which sound like it will download the display profile for your exact screen from Lenovo server, which it will set within few sec, i tried and it did change my display color little bit.

The HDR also work as advertise, the Youtube HDR content show very vivid color, and the black is deeper. Just that, Windows 10 built-in color management really bad, you can have different color in different program, you can see 2 type of color if you open a same image using 2 different software, say, a Chrome and Photos ? Both photo shown slightly different color. Overall, i will still rate it a premium screen !

The 144hz refresh rate also make thing smooth no matter you are on desktop or scrolling webpages in chrome, it just - smooth. I get the same feeling from my previous Y530 and Y7000, you wouldn't want to go back once you have high refresh display. But, the built in G-Sync make thing even better, i turn G-Sync on for all fullscreen apps (you can set it on nVidia Control Panel), and the games i play is much more smoother than before, games like CS-GO, GTA V, Forza Horizon 4 look smooth, from sudden fast moving object to slow walk in combat, you can really tell the different between G-Sync or not, it really made my day each time i play games from this laptop. You should really get this option if you want smooth gaming experience, this make me feel like million worth choosing 7i than 5i/5Pi. I will cap the max frame rate to 144hz on some games (Like Battle Field V) to fully utilize this display. Anyway, my graphic card is "just" a entry level for RTX , i have no regret to choose 144hz over 240hz since most graphic intensive games will not able to hit that number from this RTX2060, i will rather buy 144Hz + G-Sync than 240Hz without G-Sync. 144hz is more than enough for casual gamer like me, unless your eyes really up to 240Hz level to get some one headshot before they saw you  The built in Lenovo Vantage software also allow you to enable "Over Drive" mode for the display, which say can further lower the response time, which i see no different between on and off, maybe my eyes arent fast as the screen, lol.

https://preview.redd.it/7rtwkf76z3i51.jpg?width=1632&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f8df8ca92fd3682211184faed6621418c05bf47b
Now come with the keyboard, well, Lenovo make really good keyboard, not mention their Thinkpad line-up, the Legion 7i keyboard also very very good. The keyboard travel in my previous Y530/Y7000 are longer, but the feedback is very clear in Legion 7i, and the key is much more stable than it, and also sound lot quieter. The key cap is flat to me, i like the 1 in 5/5i/5Pi which the key cap slightly curved, your finger is landed comfortable than this, maybe they want to have slim chassis, so has to built slim keyboard, curved design may not able to make it here. You will be fine after few minutes of type to accept the 1.3mm travel, when gaming, each key strike is very accurate, i did't face any error like i do in MacBook Pro previously. I get not register when i gaming in my previous MacBook Pro, but not this Laptop, and my previous Y530/Y7000 also working very well. But i still can't use to the new arrow key layout, it just place too low for me, i always need to low down my hand to get arrow key, and it keep pressing aluminum instead of left or right key, well, maybe it is more focus on gaming side, or maybe i am too get used of normal laptop keyboard layout. One thing great are the Fn key can be set to "Lock" , which you dont need to keep pressing Fn to adjust volume or brightness , it will lock the function key, a missing feature i need on my previous Y530/Y7000, the Thinkpad series has this but now also come with Legion. When you press Fn, the blue light will light up the part of function available on the keyboard, show you clearly what function available, a nice touch !

https://preview.redd.it/7ylkiq8334i51.jpg?width=1632&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0905db7bcc12e5a1ac825a5e8ef6ab07dffd8b84
The RGB led is super bright ! Like the screen, it is more than double bright than what Y530/Y7000 offer ! It has 3 bright level to adjust (4 level if including Off) , the y530/Y7000 only has 2 level. Even i set to minimum level, it still very bright on some color setting, say - ocean blue and pink. Luckily, you can turn it dimmer using iCUE software customization, you can set the "Opacity" slider lower to dim it down further, the slider has way more level, which you can actually more level to control brightness than using Lenovo own keyboard hot key (Fn+ up or down ). I also found that it actually brighter if you turn the "Opacity" in ICUE ! Mean it more than more brighter than out of the box ! It can even make your screen look colorful karaoke when you turn off your room light, that level of bright ! The preloaded rainbow spiral light effect will also turn on everytime you turn on the laptop, this is quite annoying as when you turn on your laptop in office, it will spin like funfair until log in to Windows and iCUE is loaded. Although you can also turn it to other mode or off by quickly press Fn+Space or Fn+Down few times, but it is quite annoying as you will need to press each time you turn on the laptop, hopefully Lenovo will fix this by update the BIOS in the future. (But Y740 face the same issue which does't solve until now). Otherwise if you really like those RGB, this laptop can make you fun, and the setting inside ICUE is million way to customize, you can stack each effect to each other as much as you can ! I am stacking 10 lighting effects in 1 profile. Something like you can have few effect on each key or section of the keyboard, you can set multiple key in multiple opacity (dim or bright) of you can set multiple effect for any key , any section, all load at once. You can spend many hours just to customize the light ! The light bar below the front side look cool when you put the laptop in glass surface as it will reflect the bar toward you. The exhaust vent at the back also very bright even you turn to min, when turn to max, it can light up anything surrounding it at night. Well, i am so fresh to RGB, i love the effect but i dont use it very much, but left it run some during not using the laptop can made up your mood.

The trackpad is very good, the sensitivity is great, the tracking is quite accurate also, above average standard, BUT, yes, a big BUT. But the clicking sound is very loud, it sound like light switch, it do click almost entire surface, but like most of the diving board style trackpad, the upper part will need to press harder, whats more, the trackpad will have some flex when press hard (but not diving), i can feel that the trackpad surface are made of quite thin plastic, thats why i can feel the flex of it in the middle part. And the surface material is made of Mylar , though it is smooth to use but i afraid it may wear out faster than glass type, but still, it get the job done when you need it. While gaming, i always use bluetooth mouse, so, it will not annoying me very much. If want the best trackpad experience, only Apple ForceTouch Trackpad has no body come close kind of it, but you will pay way more than this, many times more.

Laptop speaker has never made me love it, they usually sound flat and less volume, as a person come from a MacBook Pro (both 13 and 15" Touchbar) before, i still haven hear any windows laptop that sound like Apple, they are like Rolls-Royce's class in laptop speaker. Well, i can't compare it, as each company has their invention section, but Windows laptop really need to spend more time on speaker, just like the display and design, they actually keep up quite a bit compare to last few years. Say 5 years ago, Gaming laptop usually get very bad screen and bulky case, but today they have much better screen and nice looking, i wish it will be the same story for speaker. It will be perfect when a great gaming laptop has good screen, proper nice casing, good keyboard, and a very best speaker. But i am asking too much for it, as i know it everyone will be say : It is too expensive for an Windows Laptop ! Well, so we have to take some compromise if we want something affordable :console:

Legion 7i speaker is loud, clear, and no unwanted noise even crank up to max, which can hear that it contain quite a quality speaker, although they are very tiny left and right box (can see from those tear down video in youtube). At 40% volume, you can hear basically any dialog in games, there has even some audible low bass. iIf you crank more than 60%, you will hear only mid-high range, and you wouldnt want to crank more than 80%, as it will be very loud to listen. You can use it as media consumption like Youtube or Netflix, you will hear voice clearly even in mid noisy environment, but dont expect you will hear an helicopter vrooming from back or front even Lenovo (or some manufacture) keep mention it got Dolby sound effect, those speaker just to tiny to sound, you will need an headphone if you want to get those effect, but i rather suggest you to go for proper AV setup for your living room if you really want to get in such result, dont expect much from a laptop. If you are casual gamer or music lover like me, any external speaker will sound good enough.

The Webcam placement also improved for this model, unlike last gen of Legion, the "nose" cam ppl called. Well, i did'nt use webcam very much, so i dont mind for that, same does the Legion 7i. The quality for my eyes is fine, nothing special to talk about, it just like an average laptop webcam, well, it just a webcam, it will get your job done in very normal way. Unless you want to take selfie with it, you better use your phone. The built in mic were also average, nothing fancy about it like MacBook Pro 16", not even that level

Performance, temperature, fan noise, and battery life

For RM400 more, you will get 8-Core instead of 6, which one will you consider ? The 10750H model cost RM7999 and my model cost RM8399 both RRP without discount. I know you will be saying like hey, the AMD 4800H is way cheaper than Intel 10875H, and it has more performance and run cooler (due to 7nm), you can just go for Legion 5 for 8-Core, why need to spend that much of extra money for 7i ? Well, i got what you mean, which i actually consider this before i purchase this laptop. I went to Lenovo website almost everyday to customize and compare, the AMD model get awful screen, less powerful graphic card, and well, i came from y530 and y7000, i tried the plastic built laptop before, they are great but i need something premium built, and whats more, i really want a great display which Legion 5 dont offer that. The processor is only internal but the screen you have to view it everyday, i wish Lenovo have AMD version of this laptop but wait, is Intel really that bad ? Well, it may sound less performance and awful temperature (really ? more on that later) after recent AMD hit, but at least, it run stable on my many previous laptop, it as great reliability history (at least for me), it never fail me yet.

https://preview.redd.it/id8gj5fh34i51.png?width=584&format=png&auto=webp&s=e953af0002305be07d9910c7882fc33aff00a5a7
I am not tech professional here so i cant show you a fancy bench mark for comparing, but base on my usage, i am comparing my previous Y7000, which has 6-Core i7 9750H, 16GB of 2666 DDR4, same RTX2060 (but in 80 or 90W variant as i remember) , same Samsung PM981a 1TB NvME SSD, same 144hz refresh rate display, i feel the Legion 7i run much more faster than it.

https://preview.redd.it/cv44jxck34i51.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=871b023457c7558da96913a5d2f0ed7044fe4159
It run even cooler during low load task compare to Y7000, it will not pass 55'c, and the processor use only 20 to 45W (mostly 20) in Auto Mode i assume that due to extra core, and i monitor there has not much than 35% load average for 1 hours of few tab chrome browsing, youtube video running. Everything feel snappier, and game load much faster. I spotted it hit 5.0Ghz quite frequently from HWiNFO.

https://preview.redd.it/ry6ku02r34i51.png?width=584&format=png&auto=webp&s=395042cd74f247be525d01ec4d62b7d7ef631c66
Switching to Performance mode, what amazed me is for the first time, i can install 2 games at once at the background and i can still use Chrome with multiple tabs (with youtube somemore) without any lag detected, the system is like fresh start. There has 2x 60GB games unpacking (from *ehemm Fit ehemm girl) simultaneously in the background, with Chrome running, the first minute of two, the processor crank up to 107W, and stay 85W for the rest until the unpack finish. during 107W, i spotted all-8 core running 4.8Ghz steady for many seconds, and 4.3 to 4.5ghz all-8 core for whole session, this is unbelievable for the first time i seen in laptop, and this thin of laptop ! I spend about 40 mins to done unpacking TWO! 60GB games ! I remember i spend about 30 mins per games in my last Y7000 , and i already jaw-dropping to see how fast of 9750H is on that time, this laptop lagi kuat ! Even all core is 100% load, the temperature is hovering between 82 to 87c', it seems to be pretty impressive.

https://preview.redd.it/x9esdvqt34i51.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=d37f1fcf3275f99a3f775d257adcd241e7d6dc2e

Well, the RTX2060 in this laptop is insanely powerful, from some rough in game benchmark, it is about 15 to 25% more performance than RTX2060 in Y7000 ! Some games like Battle Field V run very smooth even with RTX on, i got average of 73FPS with all setting set to ultra and HDR on ! The G-Sync make the game run even smoother. 1 thing quite surprise me is that this card actually run much higher clock speed than i expected, it hit 1920Mhz core and 5410mhz memory shown in HWiNFO ! I dont believe my eyes for the data, as last year my Y7000 only run at something 1250 to 1500mhz as i remember. Whats more, it can be overclock further using MSI Afterburner to 2055Mhz Core / 5710Mhz Memory (+155 Core / +300 Memory) give me another 5-7% boost in games. I saw 7% more on Forza Horizon 4 ! It run average of 90FPS with Max out setting on 1920x1080 Resolution, as you can see, this card actually perform very well, even it is years old of technology, i believe it can stand maybe extra 2-3 years more.

During "Silent Mode", the fan is quiet, even "Auto Mode" if you doing light load like browsing and watching video, the laptop still very quiet, until you run some intensive task, the fan is audible then, but still, nothing about level of loud, bear in mind that from my observation, in Auto Mode, the PL1 power limit is set to 60W, and PL2 is 107W, so you will still get decent performance in Auto Mode, same does the fan noise, it can be range from quiet to audible, but not as loud as Performance mode, which set the PL1 to 85W, while the PL2 stay 107W.
In performance mode, the laptop act very differently, unlike previous Y530 or Y7000, you actually can feel the different very much, and if you observe the processor speed, it always stay above 4Ghz range. If your load is light, even in performance mode, the laptop will still stay quiet, until you load the games, the fan noise will be maximum. It is loud, but not sharp like some other laptop. What you hear the loud is the "Air Sound" squeezing from the vent, the noise is from the friction created by the air with the vent, sound Whoosh ~ not Pzzzz, so, it is acceptable to me. If you put your hand to feel the air from the vent, you can actually see how powerful are the both fan inside, you can still feel the air even 6 to 7 inches behind the vent, like that powerful. Lenovo stated that the fan are now power directly from main supply, which is 12V, and the fan blade is super thin, which i can verify it, it really powerful fan, much much powerful than the Y530 and Y7000. The amount of air is noticeably more. If you really mind about the fan noise during gaming, you will need an headphone. But, the built in speaker actually cover up the noise quite well, any volume above 50% will cover the max fan noise, nothing worry bout that.
Due to the laptop is made of aluminum in majority of part, it can be very warm during normal use, although you will only saw 43~55'c in HWiNFO monitor app. The palm rest stay cool even full load, but the upper part of the keyboard can be very hot to touch, same does the backside plastic panel, the power input port were also hot, the laptop can pull 200-210W total system power during very heavy load. The keyboard area stay comfortable no matter you are gaming or exporting video, which is quite amazing consider it is aluminum. The heat also dispense very quick by the 2 very powerful fan, after load it only take not more than a minutes for cooling down. The backcover can be uncomfortable even in light load, you wont want this laptop on your lap, really. So, dont expect to put on your lap during heavy load.

I didnt able to undervolt it until i learn the way to get in advance BIOS in Reddit, the first few days i am using my laptop without undervolt, get me the temp max at 94'c in CPU, and 69'c in GPU. You might say, wow, 94'c is very hot ! But wait, the 94'c actually come from the first minute when the processor crank up to 107W which is 5.1Ghz power, after the PL2 107W, it only stay between 83-87'c during continue of 85W all-8 core 100% load @ 4.3 to 4.6ghz ! The processor did thermal throttling when it reach 94'c, but i found no more throttling after PL2, during 85W of load, the processor stay below 88'c, which is quite impressive consider the thickness of laptop. Well, some might say 88'c still hot when this laptop has vapor chamber cooling, but if you look some review from youtube, the Razer use the same 8-core 10875H processor like this actually run cooler, ya, but if you read properly, Razer actually turn down the clock speed quite abit to 3.plus ghz, they arent run at full all core speed. The Legion 7i actually stay above 4Ghz, this create lot of heat compare to that, so you got to pay attention for this.

I am not an Intel or Lenovo fan boy, this laptop did run hot compare to, say, AMD laptop. This is due to the limitation of 14nm technology, intel only upgrade clock speed within this few generation of processor, it may seems not impressive if we compare to AMD, i can't blame Lenovo here, as they really doing very good job for cooling, especially this model, the Legion 7i. The continue load of 85W + 30W RTX2060 (Hybrid mode off) stay below 90'c are quite impressive, my previous Y7000 can only stay below 50W if want to maintain below 90'c, this is out of the box setting, no undervolting applied. So the Vapor Cooling + 12V fan system actually handle more than 100W of heat, imagine that if this laptop using AMD 7nm or Intel coming 10nm of processor ? The performance increase will be huge !

https://preview.redd.it/abfr98x954i51.jpg?width=1632&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bd7176cb94f3d5f8ad551b71cf8882e372052623
Take Forza Horizon 4 gaming session 40 mins for example, the HWinFo shown that the RTX2060 pull up to 109W (without GPU overclocked), CPU pull up-to 79W ! The average gpu power is 79W, and CPU is 60W, the total system power draw is 218W, the GPU temp shot up to 68'c while the CPU run up to 91'c. Next is Battle Field V, with all setting to max and RTX on, this is by far the heavies load for game i have seen, it pull the RTX2060 to 114W (!!!) , but the CPU pull only 69W, but the average was quite high at 63W while the GPU is lower at 72W. The system also run hot in Battle Field V, CPU hit up to 93'c, and GPU come at 71'c. The average temperature for CPU is 84'c while the GPU is 66'c.

I got the way to enable XTU interface thru Advance BIOS mode, and try to undervolt the system. The first attempt are -0.145v (which same as my previous Y7000 and Y530 value) , first hours is okay until i reboot the system, it stuck at blank screen for 2 minutes, the system auto goes to BIOS healing mode (another good from Lenovo, i feel so nervous before the healing show up), the BIOS then back to factory mode and disable the XTU, all thing reset to normal. I then tried few setting, -0.135, -0.125, -0.120, none of it work stable, the system will freeze and give the blank screen again on next startup, and the BIOS healing itself again. The final working 1 is -0.115v, which work beautiful until today, no problem. 1 thing to mention that the Advance BIOS has lot of tweaking menu from Overclocking the CPU to RAM, to adjust system power level, but i dont touch anything as i am not understand it, afraid of flied my laptop, but it really has many engineer option to tweak, beware to set it unless you really understand what you doing.

I am at BIOS 2.02 (updated once), the XTU still available, and the Advance BIOS still working. I can see this laptop are so great for those who want to tweak this and that.

After undervolting, the temperature did goes down few degree but not as much as my previous Y7000 and Y530, the Y7000 for example, before undervolting can goes as high as 99'c ! Maybe the extra core need more power to feed, but still, it lower down 4 'c in Forza Horizon, and 5'c in Battle Field V, although it will increase few 'c back after GPU overclocked, but, better than no. I also noticed the undervolting made 107W stay longer , mean the CPU can boost up to 5Ghz longer (some times 5.1Ghz, but only a sec). Next, the overclock GPU does made the temperature hotter, by 3 'c for CPU, and 2'c for GPU. The Forza Horizon 4 ramp the GPU to 70'c, and pull 113W (before is 109w) graphic power, the total System power draw were also increase to 223W, which nearly the power adapter 230W limit !

The CPU will still hit 90'c during 107W of boost (5.0Ghz), but compare to 94'c before undervolt, it seems to be quite impressive, consider my last Y7000 crank to 4.06ghz only for this temp. Overall, like i said, the Lenovo Legion 7i has a very capable cooling solution, i bet if AMD use the same 14nm technology in this kind of setup will also generate the same result. But the performance gain is noticeable if we compare what they offer from last year. I see we actually get the same temperature number as last year Y740 (from youtube review) but the processor are now 2-core extra, hit up to 5.1ghz with 107W, and the graphic card now pull 110W instead of 80~90W, anything below 90'c to me consider fair, as it still bring me really good day to day and gaming performance.
For 80Whr battery, Lenovo claim that the Legion 7i can goes up to 8 hours of juice, but well, i of caused take that as a advertising candy. With current intel technology, it quite a hard task to make laptop that efficiency like AMD 4000 series did. I did't expect much about this as i moving between office and home everyday and i dont use laptop in mobile like some user do. I get about 7 hours battery life with 40% brightness , Utorrent running downloading with WiFi, RGB light off , Silent mode, that is without iCUE software running, as before i receive my laptop, some user from internet complaining that iCUE drain lot of battery so i disable it to run on startup, only run manually when i need it, no uninstalling needed, just disable it at start up option will be very fine. I also observe that when iCUE is running, it drain extra 15W on top of system power, it can drain as much as 50W even in Silent Mode, so that is really a problem for iCUE, i think they (lenovo or iCUE) will fix that soon by updating the software.
If browsing web something like Youtube running and multiple tab scrolling with 40% of brightness will get you about 5.5 hours of use, not impressive but as expected from such hardware. Some more, the 40% screen brightness is brighter than lot of laptop out there, it still more than comfortable to read, i assume it is somethimg 200 to 250nits of brightness, as it is very bright to use, even in my office with LED light environment. I also found that even in Silent Mode, the CPU sometimes still hit 4.5~4.8Ghz with up to 52W max and 30W average, it should be more battery life if you disable the turbo boost, well, quite hassle to gain some juice but still, it is an available option too.
Price, conclusion
Lenovo, they are like dell, they like to have promotion each day, few times per month. Very few will buy their laptop in RRP price (Normal price), ether you get student 15% discount, or some times they have some running coupon code for 5% all the way to 45% depend on model. But for Legion, they offer less discount than other model during normal season. You can still request extra few % by chatting with the sales rep in live chat, some will give you freegift, some will provide extra discount code for you, they just want you to key in their rep number at the order so that they can have some job incentive (i guess) .
I purchased this Legion 7i with 20% discount, which cost me around RM6750 without any freegift except 2 Yrs Premium On-Site, thanks to my Citibank Card Promo Code (CITI30) , i also found that in some forum that ppl are buying with 20% Discount using LENXCIMB code, actually i also can use LENXHLB as i receive the same promo from Hong Leong Bank, too. But my CitiBank Credit Card give me extra 0.5% if i spend using their card, so, why not ? I tried to chat with the sales rep, they can offer max 15% without student card needed, that is the max they can, all 4 different sales rep tell the same, they said the 20% discount is highest, no other country has such offer, and it will be end soon (It did end after my 2nd purchase, at 17/Jul as i remember), now all code only gave 6% discount, so you need to try your luck to chat with them or wait for next promo.
To me, the price is more than fair, and if compare with other's it seems like cheaper, you dont get G-Sync at most other laptop, and you dont get same screen quality like other laptop, too. For this price, say, Asus G14, for RTX2060 model it sell even expensive at RM7199 as i remember, but that 2060 is Max-Q variant, and the screen quality is no where like Legion 7i. Well, i dont mean to bash that, but after 20% discount, the attractive will be goes to 7i more. My previous Y530 and Y7000 both brought at around 5000 +-, and both working very well and the MYCS (Lenovo Malaysia) service is very responsible to me, they will reply any request you ask, and they are very helpful, too. So, i come back to Lenovo again, this brand is my 2nd trust-able after Apple.

For below RM7000, the laptop worth the paid. The overall performance is impressive especially the RTX2060 actually improved so much compare to last year, and some review even prove that it better than last year RTX2070 from some laptop, and the overclocking work like charm. The chassis is solid and the built quality is on the premium side, which make it more appearing than the lower end 5-Series, although it do have some imperfection like flex and loud track pad, gaps between screen and keyboard, but it still feel solid when you hold it, it will not be this price if this hardware pack in more premium Apple-like chassis. The keyboard is fantastic, the RGB light is super bright although it quite a hassle to turn it off each time you power on the laptop. The Speaker is loud, which can also cover the fan noise, work as it should, nothing can be asking more. The temperature work as advertise although not great like some others laptop like Razer, but consider the continue full load of 85W and all core 4Ghz above and the graphic card crank up to 113W, while the fan is audible loud during full load but not sharp, this imperfect is forgivable. At the end, no laptop are perfect, every year there will be another replacement for this year top-end laptop, i would just buy what's the best to suit my budget.

There has still other laptop out there if you want to slot in for compare like Dell XPS and HP OMEN, but to me, at the time i purchase this laptop, below RM7000 is the best thing i can get.

Last, hope you all like my review and if any information is wrong please forgive me, as i am not really a professional person. Have a nice day and stay safe.

/r/QOTSA Official Band of the Week 15: SCREAMING TREES

You know how your mom never, ever, ever stops talking about how painful and difficult your birth was? How each time she talks about it, it gets longer and more painful and more detailed and more awful? And how that long and difficult experience makes you indebted to her forever? And how when she tells that tale at Thanksgiving every year with three-too-many Chardonnays in her you feel the bile and anger rise?
What, just me? Goddammit, Freud, you are ruining my sex life.
This week’s band went through a truly difficult and painful genesis. They strove for success and fought themselves all the way. The band peaked just as they were coming apart, and the breakup was ugly. There were drugs (a lot more than six). Worse, there was heroin. And no, not the Wonder Woman kind, that’s spelled differently. There was alcohol. There were binges and mistakes. There was a car crash. Then there was another one. There was a feud with Liam Gallagher. OK, that shit is totally understandable. Wanker. There were brushes with greatness. Steve Fisk, Chris Cornell, and our ginger savior all played a part.
Birth is a difficult process. I should know, because I gave birth to a kidney stone once, and I am never letting that fucker forget it.
Today we will take a dive into a painful experience for everyone involved, full of regret and mistakes. But that suffering produced some amazing music, was the bridge between Kyuss and QotSA, and introduced the world to the ashtray-eating, heroin-shooting gargoyle himself, Mark Lanegan.
That’s right: this week’s band is SCREAMING TREES
(Oh yeah, that’s a Facebook link alright.)
About Them Screaming Trees hail from the pacific northwest, that Mecca of Grunge. But what people tend to forget is that this band was old before Grunge was actually a thing. Their first four albums - over half their official discography - dropped between 1986 and 1989, and went largely unnoticed outside of the local scene.
Sure, if you ask a hard core fan, they will tell you that you don’t know the band unless you have listened to their 1986 debut album Clairvoyance, if only because Steve Fisk produced it. Even Kim Thayil of Soundgarden loves the raw power of the album. Much like The Velvet Underground, early Screaming Trees music is more important because of how it influenced artists in the Seattle Scene, rather than the impact of the music itself.
The band - consisting of Lanegan summoning Cthulu on vocals, Gary Lee Conner on Guitar, his brother Van Conner on Bass, and Mark Pickerel on drums - signed a record deal with SST (Solid State Tuners, yeah, I looked that one up for you) and quickly released Even If and Especially When in 1987, Invisible Lantern in 1988, and Buzz Factory in 1989. All three albums underwhelmed and brought an end to their contract. The band did cut their teeth on the indie circuit. After a van wreck in Florida in 1989, the band almost collapsed. (Side note: who would have thought anything would be a complete wreck in Florida?)
Though the band had garnered something of a cult following by touring all across the US, the big break eluded them. We know that the Seattle scene was an intimate one, and everyone knew each other. Screaming Trees jumped from SST to legendary Seattle label Sub Pop for one EP, Change Has Come. Even though this was a modest success, the band made the decision to seek some formal management and ended up turning to Susan Silver, who managed Soundgarden and was then the wife of Chris Cornell.
Silver - and Cornell - turned out to be exactly what they needed. Things began to turn around when Silver convinced Epic Records to take a gamble on them. Epic was the Sony-owned label that had released Michael Jackson’s Thriller. They had major acts in their stable, including Culture Club, Wham!, the Clash, Living Color, Ozzy Ozbourne, and of course Pearl Jam. Epic saw the growing music scene in Seattle and, tipped off by Silver, snapped up Screaming Trees.
This was the big time.
This was what they had been working for.
All they had to do was not screw it up.
If you want to dive into their discography, a great place to start is with their fifth album, and the first one on the Epic label, Uncle Anesthesia. Screaming Trees knew that Epic was their big shot, and that they had to create something great. After dipping a toe in the water with Epic with the EP Something About Today, they knew that they needed an amazing producer to sharpen them in the studio, just like Steve Fisk had done on their debut.
Cornell and Silver recommended Terry Date, who had produced Louder than Love. Cornell also volunteered to help produce the album and do backing vocals. Incidentally, Date would go on to produce Soundgarden’s monster album Badmotorfinger that same year.
Uncle Anesthesia (despite some truly disturbing album art) went on to actually have a song - Bed of Roses - chart on the radio. But it was not quite the hit album that anyone in the band had hoped for. Drummer Mark Pickerel called it quits and left the band and was replaced by Meg White Barrett Martin. After another van wreck (Seriously? WTF? Twice? Only one guy in the band is named Van) -- this time in Wyoming -- the band had to cancel a bunch of shows. Lanegan had always been a drinker, but this second wreck pushed him deep into the bottle. Bassist Van Conner temporarily quit the band to tour with Dinosaur Jr. It seemed like Screaming Trees had missed the free throw. They’d bobbled the ball. They had dropped the pass. They didn’t do the thing. They didn’t sport the sport.
But there was some light at the end of the tunnel. Or, rather, moving pictures. Or maybe both. See, it turns out that the band should really have been thinking of going to the movies instead.
Screaming Trees may not have had the Kool-Aid-Man -Runs-Through-the-Wall breakout hit they wanted with Uncle Anesthesia. But what they had after five full albums was credibility. They were the band that other bands knew and respected. They had a very strong cult following. They had modest airplay and a great record deal.
And with the movie Singles, their long, protracted and painful journey from scuffling bar band to genuine breakout artist finally occurred. The 1992 love letter from director Cameron Crowe to the Gen X Seattle Music Scene has all kinds of inside jokes in it. Pearl Jam Bassist Jeff Ament let actor Matt Dillon wear his clothes for the authenticity of his character. Chris Cornell wrote an early version of Spoonman for the film as well as Birth Ritual and Seasons. Pearl Jam wrote Breath and State of Love and Trust. The Smashing Pumpkins wrote Drown. Alice in Chains and Soundgarden both had live performances in the film. Crowe knew all about the music scene in Seattle and knew the credibility that Screaming Trees had with all the artists in the film.
And because the soundtrack came out on Epic Records, the label also had a vested interest in the success of their own Grunge artist. The Singles soundtrack was released in June of 1992, three months before the movie came out. It built massive hype and went platinum. Epic, with Crowe’s blessing, made sure that Screaming Trees got a huge place of prominence in the movie soundtrack. Nearly Lost You, the single from the forthcoming Screaming Trees album, got heavy radio rotation. Expectations soared.
This was a massive problem for the band.
Screaming Trees had been all about the struggle. When they finally got national success they just did not know what to do with it. Having finally been born, they were in real danger of being abandoned, much like my aforementioned kidney stone. It just kind of sits there now. Lazy bastard.
Lanegan’s drinking and the pressure for success made the creation of their sixth studio album, Sweet Oblivion, a chaotic experience. He would disappear for days during the recording process, come back hung over and make up lyrics on the spot. Half-written songs without titles were workshopped and recorded rather than rehearsed and polished. But somehow the album got made. Sweet Oblivion dropped in September of 1992 and the strength of the massively hyped Nearly Lost You drove unprecedented sales. They weren’t playing clubs anymore; they were playing stadiums. But this tour pushed Lanegan out of the bottle and straight towards Heroin. And not ‘heroine’ like Black Widow, I mean Black Tar heroin.
The punishing tour schedule and equally if not more punishing drug use took an incredible toll on the band. When it came time to try to follow up on Sweet Oblivion, the mojo was gone. Screaming Trees had never had any problems creatively until this time. Gary Lee Conner called the time after the tour “...one of the darkest periods of my life.” If the pressure to create Sweet Oblivion had been big, the pressure to follow it up was enormous. To the band, it was like trying to create the follow up to GTA V. Or Skyrim. Or Half-Life 2. We’re talking turn-coal-into-diamonds-in-your-ass type of pressure. Gary Lee Conner and Mark Lanegan had always collaborated to make the band’s music, but Lanegan was the clear creative force. Conner could not do it on his own, and Lanegan was too busy dancing with his Feel-Good-Hits-Of-The-Summer, if you know what I mean.
It got so bad that Van Conner told Lanegan that he was kicked out of the band, and that they would be seeking a new singer and a new band name. Lanegan somehow convinced Conner to give him one more chance. Screaming Trees went back in to the studio and squeezed out one more album, Dust. It is a solid recording with some good tracks but it came out in 1996, four years after their last release.
The band toured heavily in support Dust. At one point in 1996, they were touring with Oasis, and got into it because Liam Gallagher called them ‘Howling Branches’. Somewhat sneakily, Van Conner whacked Gallagher with his bass guitar during an energetic performance. I mean, who doesn’t want to hit Liam Gallagher? That face is just so punchable.
Anyway, here’s Wonderwall.
Looking to augment their live sound, they added ex-Kyuss guitarist Joshua Homme as a touring member. Yes, that’s right: JHo was Alain Johannes before Alain was Alain. Homme was a great hit with the guys in the band and managed to patch some of the cracks between them. But this was temporary at best.
Following the Dust tour, the band went on extended hiatus. Their deal with Epic had come to an end. They tried to record some new tracks in 1999 but very little came of it. They officially called it quits in 2000.
Mark Lanegan joined QotSA the same year, reuniting with Homme. Their music, the product of so much conflict, does stand the test of time and is worth a listen.
Links to QOTSA
Much of Screaming Trees roots (pun 100% intended) are intertwined with that of QotSA. Josh Homme himself was a touring rhythm guitarist for the band from 1996-1998.
Then of course there is the most obvious connection, that being the ever powerful presence of satan himself Mark Lanegan. This man has toured and recorded with Our Boys for five of their seven albums, enough to be a full member in his own right. And even if you’re new, and you don't know him by name yet, I can bet that you’re enjoyed that raspy vocal delivery on many a QotSA track without even knowing it.
The other members also have some slight connections to either Josh or his ever changing entourage of musical monarchs. Lead guitarist of ST, Gary Lee Conner, has released music featuring our ginger Elvis. His brother Van Conner was the first studio bassist for QotSA, since his basswork can be found on both the Kyuss / Queens of the Stone Age EP and the Gamma Ray EP.
One of the two drummers of Screaming Trees has also been touched by the holy hand of Homme. Barrett Martin was one of the many contributing guest artists on Rated R, providing some percussion, steel drums, and vibraphone as needed on The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret, Better Living Through Chemistry, Lightning Song, and I Think I Lost My Headache.
This band was truly well entwined with the one we all know so well. I could hardly be-leaf it! Sorry, im really branching off with these tree puns. Man, I'm such a sap for these. I’d come up with more, but I think I'm feeling a bit stumped.
If you made it this far, please, do not downvote the post because of my terrible jokes, I’ll be back on medication to avoid them in the future. At least I will if it stops giving me kidney stones.
Well, one thing is clear: I’m still better than Liam Gallagher.

I made around 1.2M off of the diamond casino inside track

So, i got 800k in around 6-9 (nice) hours from strategically betting on the inside track, max bet (10k) on the most likely to win on the public one, and on the private solo one half max bet on evens when its there (unless theres 2 evens then i just bet 2500 on the horse that had "sauce" somewhere in its name ), sometimes if the most likely one to win was 2/1 and the next most likely was 5/1 id just play risky, and due to RNG it paid off more times than it didnt, making it worth it in the long run. i started off with having 5k be my temporary max bet until i got around 100k, and had more leeway to be risky, and if i hit an unfavorable shift in W/L, id lower bets untill i got back up to gaining tokens instead of losing them. I learned a few things from this, like atleast in my testing, the horse "downtown renowned" had maybe the highest luck in its likelyhood category (i think 3/1) and actually beat horses with better odds more often than not,(except for evens) which was a big jump as it took me from making 10000 - 20000 off of each bet to 20000 - 40000 each bet. Needless to say this strategy sucked the soul out of my body and I closed the game 3 hours into day 2. didnt play gta for about 4 days afterwards.
I dont expect anyone to even think about doing this, i just posted this because there might be people who are broke and sick of getting heist matches with level 23s and just waisting 30mins-an hour of their time just to rage quit because the pre-determined and un-replaceable pilot cant figure out that they need to fly higher above humane labs to trigger the progression queue so you can finally make back that money you spent upgrading your elegy retro custom into a cool mazda rx7. Litterally the exact reason why i seeked out an RNG grinding system (not even remotely an exploit, just selling your soul for gtao money)to begin with. Thanks. Enjoy having all of your happiness ripped from your body, only gaining 10% of it back when you get that instanst gratification of trading in 1M casino tokens for real money, i swear having to hold right on the d-pad for a long time never good untill this moment.

DAE wanna see more focus on cars/racing?

Anybody else into racing games that wish GTA would put more focus on this aspect? That’s one of the more addictive aspects of V to me, but it just doesn’t scratch that itch. And on the other foot, I’ve played racing games like Turismo and Need For Speed, which are cool. But there’s just something extra fun about racing with my car and bike and Off Road collections. The vehicles I use to get around the map and complete these action missions, work to modify and upgrade, customize. Those other games just don’t do it for me like GTA, but then again, GTA is lacking in a lot of areas that would make it so much more fun.
When I first put the game in and saw there’s a character whose thing is racing, I was like “Hell yea!” I love playing the street racing circuit, betting on my races, building my money and using it equip a new car with the best upgrades. I love the excitement when you happen upon a rare, fast car and gotta stop what you’re doing to chase it down. I was into nothing but the Hao Street Races for about 4 days. But I looked up and saw “There’s only 5 races?? 1 bike and 4 car?”
The races make me appreciate the map in a different way. Areas and trails that I wouldn’t even notice and just drive past when getting from A to B. A little curve you gotta hit just right to shave off a half second. Get behind two NPCs in a race, and it’s like “Okay, I can get them on this next curve and straightaway if I hit it perfect...”.
There’s something very zen and meditative about the Street Racing. All I’m focused on is the track. And they have so many great tracks in Online. But it honestly kinda loses that factor, any time I’ve tried racing online. Maybe newer consoles have a lot better racing communities. I’m on PS3. But it takes several minutes to get maybe one Joined. You don’t know who you’re racing, if they play cheap or not. It’s just so much more fun and relaxing for me to race the computer, on my own terms, when and where I want. I wish they would update with the ability to race NPCs and fill empty slots with NPCs to have a full race card. If you don’t have a buddy to trade wins, it can be a pain in the ass trying to win enough to unlock all Upgrades.
As for Story Mode, I wish a player like Franklin had his story revolve a lot more around the Street Racing. Some kinda Fast and Furious storyline, you get into the underground circuit and make multiple contacts and there are races galore to play (maybe not all required for 100% for those who just aren’t into it). I’d also like more options and details for mods, upgrades, customization, and have the different tweaks make more of a difference in the Speed, Accel, Brake, Handling, etc. Different tires make a difference, like in Off Roading
Would also always be cool to have more rare cars to find out there. And just all around more focus on the car and street racing. What I love about it, it has the potential to feel like a racing game within this overall action, exploration, open world, RPG-lite experience. Makes the game a one stop shop, and you can swap up what you focus on. But it can be done so that people who aren’t into all that stuff really don’t have to put much focus on all that. They can beat a few races on Easy to continue the story and maybe have to beat 20 for the trophy/100% but those can be side missions and they can focus on the aspects they find fun

An extensive list of features I would like to see implemented into TC2 or any future titles.

This list will consist of the beginnings of an outstanding open-world racing game from many of the features I've conceptualized. I've always had a thought/fantasy in my head of taking some of the best features from many racing games and rolling them into one fantastic game. There have been so many quirks and great things across many racing games and even non-racing games that could be implemented into other racing games to improve upon games. I think some game developers and creative directors owe it to themselves to play many other racing games themselves to draw inspiration from other games and they should directly use polls in social media to see what people want the most, so resources can be allocated in that direction. I will refer to many games throughout this as I feel a lot of racing games (and other games in general) made over the last 15 years or so have features that could contribute to the concepts that would create a great game. Game abbreviations will include MC (Midnight Club), NFS (Need for Speed), TC (The Crew) FH (Forza Horizon), FM (Forza Motorsport), GT (Gran Turismo), GTA (Grand Theft Auto) and TDU (Test Drive Unlimited). This list will not be suggesting any locations, vehicle or part manufacturers directly unless something is used as an example, this is just features that could be incorporated upon a base game. Developers will obtain whatever licenses they can and I don't see this as a thing to extensively cover. An example is that we would all love to see Toyota, but obtaining their license recently has been difficult for many companies. One thing that I can't speak of as I have no personal use, is steering wheels. I'd like to hear some feedback on how to create the optimal steering wheel experience in a racing game.
Physics: Driving physics control the entire driving experience of a racing game so these are ultimately the most important thing to get correct. There have been many games that have gotten so many things right with a mediocre or worse physics system that detracted from the experience so much that the legacy of the games it applies to are tarnished regardless of how many other things are done well, with TDU2 is a great example. Ideally, they would be on par with FH4. Some extent of arcade physics would be nice, but not to the extent of some of the Ghost produced NFS games to where there is some oddly conflicting attempt of two physics systems fighting each other to determine if you are attempting to drift or grip. There would be a difference in the feeling of drivetrains and the AWD wouldn't be dominant over RWD in paved road scenarios, tuning and efficient driving could make RWD better due to the car being lighter.
Controller mappings/settings: I will continue to reiterate the ability to customize things to the user's liking should be the biggest priority in many categories. The ability to enable and disable vibration in the handles and triggers individually would be nice. It's good to have the choice setting of linearity and inner and outer dead zones. I will be using an Xbox controller for my ideal pre mapped settings. I think FH4 has the best control scheme, but could still use some improvement (and features). To maximize the inputs available, the photo mode should be accessed through the start/pause menu, rather than having them mapped to buttons that could be useful for other functions. The standard LT brake, RT accelerate, LS steering and RS camera (with the click of it being a 180 degree look back) are a very simple base scheme. LB to use the clutch, X and B should be downshift and upshift respectable, RB for the handbrake, A for nitrous, Y for rewind, LS click for the horn, the "select" button would be for interact/map when there's nothing to interact with, left d-pad would function the same way GTA5's would regarding the radio (including holding it + RS to select a specific station), down d-pad would function as FH4 does, where you can choose telemetry or a gps assistant, up d-pad could enlarge and extend the mini-map to give an idea of what is ahead. right d pad could pull up a list of mini functions, such as blinkers, headlights, windows, convertible roof, neon lighting, engine off, hydraulics, air bags, cruise control, etc.
Map/Environment: The map can be a real place or a fictional place. Being able to visit a real place from the comfort of your home is nice, but visiting a fantasy land with no creative restrictions would be nice. Some really cool things that were imagined could happen because there is no need to resemble a real place. Day/night cycle with a weather cycle depending on which part of the map you are on, where snow can be on top of mountains. The map needs to be large, no smaller than FH4, ideally larger than the individual TDU2 maps with little to no exploration restrictions. I'd like to see a couple very long straightaways or near straightaways to allow cars to top out on speed. This could be combined with a highway loop system that can wrap around a large portion of the map. Beaches, bumpy terrain areas for intense offroading and of course tunnels for the sound of engines roaring through and echoing. A moderately large mountain would be cool for a hill climb and maybe somewhere to descend from the mountain with multiple consecutive hairpins from the mountain would be nice for drifting. I’d love for the map to have spots to evoke nostalgia for many of us that have played many racing games throughout the year, with an example being when I played TC1 for the first time and I was in LA, it brought back fond memories of MCLA. Even some areas do not have to be specific, but some areas on TC2 reminded me of the speed challenges on NFSPS. Having a/a few tuning shops across the map would be really cool, along with a few NPC cars completely RNG based on model and visual customization so that every time you visit the tuners, you see something new so the tuner feels less stale over time. Barn finds/TDU2 style wrecks. Having racing tracks incorporated into the map that are accessible while in free roam and used for races would be cool, like TC1/TC2, especially an oval track with an optional infield layout. Having a parking garage or two would be nice as you can do many things with them. I liked how there was one incorporated in MCLA and NMFSMW(2012) provided a good experience while in them. We should have a GTA5 style 48 minute irl day/night cycle with about 10 hours in game (20 minutes irl) of nighttime and 14 hours in game (28 minutes irl) of daytime to provide a balance most would find enjoyable. While viewing the full sized map in the menu, we should be able to zoom out a lot or zoom in to nearly street view, like TC2. Roads need to have believable lane width, unlike how the lanes have become wider and wider every FH installment. We should have some back roads that are very slim and have room to accommodate one car width covering both directions. Gas/petrol stations are nice to see as that is something that some games don't include enough. The planes flying in TC2 add to the immersiveness. Having an airport with a long airstrip is something that is seen as important. It was a place for people to frequently congregate in GTA4/FH2 and the lack of a nice, unobstructed airstrip in FH4 is seen as something that's a letdown. Real life traffic cars with several color options each to increase immersiveness, also cars represent surroundings (taxis in the city, utility vehicles in a rural area, etc). Having pedestrians on foot can also add into the immersive feeling, including them reacting to your presence by having dialogue and running away if you're being reckless. Some places will be in various stages of construction (similar to GTA) and over the course of updates they'll come further along and finish construction and some will become interactive spaces. Some places will also become the sights of demolition.
Camera settings: Getting the right view and feel for cameras is important to giving you the most comfortable experience to get the feel for where your car is at and focus on surroundings in the way that is desired. Importantly, having bumper, hood, cockpit (with and without steering wheel) and chase cameras is a great start. There should also be an "action" camera with additional sense of speed, sensitivity towards turns, etc. Although this isn't a racing game, Rocket League inspired me to take a deeper dive into the thoughts of camera perspectives. Adjusting RL camera settings can assist your ability to be aware of surroundings and I'm sure the same would apply to actual racing games. Settings for RL that would be nice to apply to racing games would be the ability to turn on or off camera shake upon collisions, the FOV, distance of the camera away from the car (and distance gain relative to speed, if desired), camera height in relativity to the vehicle (could be important with SUVs/trucks) and angle at which the camera points towards the ground/sky. I'd like to see settings to turn vignetting and motion blur from a 0-100% scale. This effect is often used to create a sense of speed, but is often found to be disruptive towards viewing surroundings and braking zones. As I feel this would pertain to the player's perception/camera adjustment, I think the cockpit views should contain an adjustable seat, such as TDU1. Keeping something like the drift camera for cockpit views, along with the settings they have related to it in FH4 would be nice.
User interface/HUD: I think being consistent to many other racing games would be good in many ways. Ideally, the ability to adjust which corner things are in would be the best, but if the customization wasn't an option, this is how I think it should be. Having the speedometetachometeodometer in the bottom right would be nice, along with the ability to display it in an analog or digital format, such as FH4. The map should be on the bottom left and should have two levels of details for options; one being a minimalist design with no border that gradually fades out (similar to Grid Autosport's track layout minimap, mixed with the off road icon detail of FH4). The second map option should be similar to a mixture of NFS Heat and TDU1 in terms of borders on the mini-map and detail to show side roads/terrains. The ability to adjust the map rotating or not would be nice. We should also be able to see our recent driving path in a thin line on the map, such as TDU2. The race position should be in the top right and all other race details (total time in race and sprint race % or lap count, best and previous lap) should be in the top left. Another thing that could add into the immersion would be changing the opacity of the HUD, from 0-100% so you could make it mostly transparent, but visible enough to be useful if that is what is desired. Having an odometer built into the HUD would be nice as well. Games such as TC2 have the speedometer and mini-map flipped from the standard positions and it is a minor grievance. The speedometers in non-cockpit views should be able to resemble the car's actual speedometer as seen in TDU and NFS Shift. We should be able to filter the map well when in that menu, similar to FH4.
Event Types: Blueprints (FH3), random events where you can taxi or tail someone (TDU2), Drag races with proper street light, track light or an NPC human signaling in the middle of the road making the countdown (also with burnouts like NFSPS), score based drift racing, sprint races, circuit races, speed trap races (NFSMW), pink slip and money wager races (MCLA), unordered races (MC3), rivals (FH3/4), true street races and official sanctioned races (FH3/4 and NFSH) and end the game with a goliath type of race (FH3/4). Off road racing in the form of sprints and circuits would be nice. Bringing over speed traps, speed zones, drift zones and danger signs/long jumps from FH4/NFSH would be nice. Removing the potential disruption of traffic would be nice by ghosting vehicles in these situations, as FH4 has done. A route creator along the lines of MCLA/FH4 would be nice with the ability to add/remove some objects like barriers and ramps. The TDU2 style limited time events would be cool. Maybe a certain event would be worth double money or level progression. Some of the limited time races would utilize the places being constructed and demolished.
Online Play: Free roam such as TC2/FH4 in terms of grouping with friends is ideal, but have the option to have private lobbies (up to as many players as the developers can make work) and the ability to search for public free roam lobbies based on preferences of drifting, car meets, cruising, etc. Free roamers should be able to disable or enable collisions with random players not in their group. Lacking the collisions removes some of the immersiveness and the ghosted appearance ruins things such as drifting tandems and trains with random players. Something similar to Forzathon from FH4 could help players unite and group together and optionally have something to do in the lobby every hour. Ranked and unranked playlist organization like FH4, but make completely separate on and off road playlists for online along with a voting system for the class of racing and location. Online race collision penalties and ghosting similar to FH4. Free roam quick 1v1 wager races against other players in cruises. We should have the option to play through the campaign in a cooperative fashion, similar to FH4/TC2. Cross play would be nice to implement.
Driving Features: Race Driver Grid style rewinds as they're probably the smoothest working rewinds compared to the segmented rewind system in other racing titles. TC2 back on track compared to FH4 weird reset, FRIM (TDU2)/skill chain (FH1-4) in freemode to reward in small XP/money. The ability to enable settings on a 0-100% slider would be nice as well as a detailed damage model. The ability to render in more tire smoke than other games would be nice. I'm aware it requires a lot of system resources, but I would like to see how far it could be pushed on next generation consoles/and always-improving top of the line PCs. Using the car with manual transmission would allow us to put the car in neutral. Some vehicles with visible engines/engine components have a noticeable shake while idle, so seeing that would be nice. Being able to enable/disable fuel management (both for cruising/racing) would be nice, along with gas/petrol stations to refill the fuel and nitrous (just a drive-thru required). Slipstreaming other cars will make your car faster, not give nitrous like NFS. Nitrous should slowly regenerate like NFSMW2005, where there is also a slight delay for it to begin regenerating again, unlike TC2 where it begins regenerating immediately. Difficulty settings to lower driving assistance, if desired. Wipers operating along with rain buildup would clearly add some realism. Reversing your car would add a backup camera in place of the infotainment system displaying the map until you've left the reverse gear. While driving in the cockpit, the wheel needs to be given a 900ish degree rotation from lock to lock to add into the realistic feeling of being in a car.
Non-Driving Features: Players should be able to enter their homes similar to GTA5 and TDU2 and they should be able to have a vast array of customization for their house and a trophy room, which can be earned from high tier sanctioned races/tournaments (inspired by NFL 2K5/Auto Modellista), photos taken in game can be framed and displayed around the house (TDU2) and multiple garages and garage types like TDU/GTA along with the ability to interact with and move cars around different garages and spaces within the garages. The ability to test drive any car at any level of progression and visit themed new dealerships and used dealerships would be cool (TDU/TC). Character customization would be nice to control the appearance of your character, such as a plastic surgeon and clothing stores. The ability to control blinkers, headlights, windows, convertible tops/sunroofs, neon lighting, turning the engine off, operating hydraulics and adjusting air bags. Having a large variety of standard and gimmick horns. Using horns to control police lights to flash rapidly upon the horn being pressed, along with the siren remaining operating upon letting go of the horn. The internal navigation/infotainment screens of cars show the in game map/gps (TDU2). We could see the drone from FH4 return as it’s a good way to view tricky areas and get a live view of other players without obstructing them. Wheelspins (FH4) exist, but guarantee car or money and have the potential of earning clothes as a side bonus. We could maybe have a casino (similar to TDU2/GTA5) with various attractions, such as slots, a daily wheelspin for a rotating car weekly, the ability to bet on real life PvP races that the large room would randomly put you into spectate and other casino based activities. Our character shouldn't be mute throughout the story, we should be given a few voice choices for a little more personality for our character (similar to how Saints Row operates its voices). Car clubs would be cool, similar to FH3, along with leaderboards based on the clubs. Oil changes at the performance shops and car washes would be nice. Garages/dealerships and tuning shops will have various ambient noises (hydraulic lifts, airsaws, torches, metal slamming, etc.) and subtle music.
Photo mode: This deserves its own category and also can help a company market the game by users sharing their photos if the mode allows such great photos people will be prone to sharing them. We should have a filtetime of day/weather system like TC2. The focusing and motion blur of FH4 is well executed. We should be able to zoom in and out (adjust focal length) without it altering our field of view. We should be able to apply different lens effects, such as fisheye, rectilinear, etc. The camera should have the ability to position freely, in terms of raise, lower, tilt, rotate, etc. The maximum height for the camera needs to be much higher than FH4. The camera should have the potential to be on a gimbal, so it can remain even while a car is going up and down a hill to emphasize how drastic the ascent or descent is. All these features on top of standard stuff such as exposure, saturation, etc. Also, the live rewind and fast forward again option in TC2 is amazing. It’s easy to miss that perfect single frame shot on other games, but the ability to do that solves it.
Soundtrack: It needs to be eclectic with hip-hop, rock and electronic (maybe 2 of each) like modern and classic hip-hop and rock and electronic can be split between chill and hype. Maybe we can get pop, country and classical stations? Have a mix of some lesser known songs and also some billboard topping hits. Don't have stations where many of their songs sound very similar. Something great that could be added could be Spotify integration if any company can figure it out/contract Spotify. Groove integration was a good idea on FH, but Groove wasn't successful. Having the ability to fully mute all music sounds would also be nice (unlike FH4).
Vehicles: As I said, I will not be going over brands, but I would like to see a variety of entry level cars, sports cars, super cars, hyper cars and full on race cars. Concept cars would be great, as they are seen in limited fashion on most open world titles. I'd like trucks and SUVs as well for off roading and to maintain a wide variety of vehicles on par with FH4. I’d also like to see a vehicle categorization similar to FH4 (i.e. Hypercars, classic muscle, etc.). While I'd like to see a variety of vehicle types, I'd still prefer to see quality over quantity. Each vehicle needs to be replicated well and many should have extensive customization. We should be able to favorite cars and also choose a random car (totally random or random from favorites for whatever vehicles are applicable to the given event or freeroam. We should be able to tag vehicles as designed for off-road, wet driving, drifting, drag, etc. These will just be two examples, but we should be able to provide donor cars to speciality shops and convert them into improved, rarer editions. Two conversions that I'll reference would be converting a Porsche Carrera GT into a Gemballa Mirage GT or a Mustang GT into a Saleen S302. A growing variety of vehicles over the course of time, similar to FH4 and TC2.
Visual Customization: No visual adjustments will relate to performance gains or losses (i.e. camber, wheel swaps/sizes, bodykits, etc.) other than you will need to equip some form of spoilewing to adjust rear downforce. We should be able to set wheels smaller than stock, as well as larger. Track width should be an option with multiple sliders (like NFS2015). We should be given manufacturer options for paint, wheels and interior choices, etc. (TDU2/TC2). We should be able to save paint colors (MCLA), instead of just having them in recents and eventually disappear (FH). We should be able to adjust trim as chrome, titanium, gold, black, etc. (MC3) The paint options of NFS Heat and MCLA would be nice, such as gloss, metallic flake with size options, carbon fiber varieties, chrome, matte, satin, fading from left to right as well as top to bottom and the ability to add multiple colors in a color shifting paint job (MC3), colored nitrous (MC3/NFSH), colored tire smoke (GTA5/NFSH) and backfire (NFSH), tire design (MCLA/NFSH), wide body kits (both from manufacturers and developer designed), bumpers, spoilers/wings, skirts, mirrors and fenders (non real life brands can autosculpt like NFSC). Neon colors designs and patterns (TC2/NFSH), hydraulics (MCLA) and airbags (MCLA/NFSH) Brake calipers should be able to be from brands (MCLA/NFSH) or painted (TC2). Interior parts such as steering wheels and seats (MCLA), along with materials, alcantara, suede, leather, plastic, carbon fiber, chrome, etc. (TC2). We should be able to chop the roofs of some vehicles (MC3). Cars have individual licence plates and can get multiple states/countries given they fit the spacing allocated on each vehicle for them (MCLA) Tinted headlight and taillight housings are great options along with light bulb temperatures. Although it isn’t the taste of many people, we should be able to do all kinds of unique styles, such as monster truck (or at least an extreme lift), donk, bosozoku and even NHRA style drag body modifications (with optional wheelie bar) for some of the vehicles you would see them on in real life, but modifications this drastic will impact performance and vehicle hit box/collision physics. Vinyls on widows should be a thing with the ability to make vinyls able to utilize different paint materials (NFSH). FH4 has the numerical system to mirror and scale things fairly well. I’d like to keep the placement system of FH4. Also, the FH4 marketplace to download tunes and designs is the best I've seen, so that can be duplicated. As this will blanket all of the above, some customization parts should be recommended by a popular magazine or website. MC3 did this with Dub and created a fantastic game with a lasting legacy and many of the style options were relevant when the game was released and for a while after. We should be able to adjust tire width and profile, similar to MCLA. The ability to paint engine bays and accent parts would be nice, similar to NFS UG2. Custom exhaust tips/mufflers would be something nice that many other games have incorporated.
Performance Customization and Tuning: PI system like Forza with classes (but actively tuned for balance), different turbos for rpm ranges/turbo lag, supercharger. We should have different tire compounds, even being able to set for front/rear separately. As mentioned earlier, a RWD car that is tuned well and driven well should have the potential to beat an AWD vehicle due to it being lighter. Keeping the tuning settings of what you can adjust would be ideal. We should have the ability to combine the live tuning of NFSH, but enhance it while at a test track (with an off road area in the middle) connected to the tuning shop. You can isolate many tuning options and slide them around while hot lapping. I’d like the ability to run fat rear drag tires, unlike FH4 where it’s just a tire compound.
Audio: This is something that will be very important to many, so great sounds like the noise of turbos on NFS2015 and raw engine noises of FH2 and other games held to a high standard will be important to nail. Exhaust tuning from NFSH was nice, but I would like to see a little more of a difference in the sound with this idea further improved. Getting the proper transmission noises can be useful for cars on top of just the engine noise. Tires skidding is nice noise to get correct for realism as well. Having nice ambient sounds will also be important for immersiveness, such as birds chirping, waves washing up on the beach, wind noises and great echo sounds for traveling through tunnels or densely surrounded areas, such as down a row of highrise buildings). Other than making a car sound how it sounds and making realistic sounds for the environment, there is not much more to be said. It's a moderately limited description, but still something that is pivotal.
Story/post launch content: I would like to see a sense of progression built up throughout the game by starting in a low end car as someone who freshly arrived in the are the map takes place in (MCLA), maybe the antagonist could be someone who scammed you in a previous city or dismissed your talent at the beginning of the game. For me, the outright story isn't too important, but can contribute to how much you will enjoy a racing game. Any DLC map expansion needs to be seamless and not require a separate load in, similar to Burnout Paradise Big Surf Island bridge or (MCLA South Central expansion) and unlike FH4 Fortune Island. The 1000 Club was a great thing that occurred on FH1 that would be nice to bring reason to use every car and for the 100%ers to have something else to chase. Police are something that hasn't been done extremely well in a racing only game in a very long time, in my opinion. I would ideally focus on everything else before attempting to add police in. If they were added in, something along the lines of NFSMW (2005) would be nice, but with higher stakes. We should have an end-game hero car, similar to the M3 GTR from NFSMW, but make it a car that isn't already iconic from another game, movie or real life racing, as people wouldn't think of the hero car associated to this hypothetical game, but related to whatever it was previously iconic in, as whatever work that went into making it that car would go to waste as people would want to overwrite that design. Alongside the hero car, we should also have a couple cars that are unique variations of pre-existing cars (Dub Edition cars of MCLA) for other special events (MCLA hard tournaments/FH3 street race bosses). The post-launch support needs to be good, unlike NFSH. Adding cars monthly would be a great start, along with any necessary QoL updates.
Sorry for any formatting or grammatical issues. I’d like to hear any additional features to add into racing games from the feedback of other people or changes that they would prefer. Also, if there are any ideas in here that others would like to emphasize. Any of this content is free for content creators to recycle if that is desired. I’d like to see some of these ideas be passed around and heard to developers on what could be improved upon. Many games have great ideas and I’d like to see them build off of each other’s greatness.

Arguing for certain “bad” movies [SPOILERS] [very long]

Over the many years I’ve browsed the internet I’ve come to realize there is a list of movies that are consistently criticized and generally viewed as really bad, but I always thought they’re not as bad as everyone thinks and I just never had the motivation to argue for them before. So here goes.
I guess I could justify my defense of these movies by my nostalgia and my belief that these filmmakers managed to achieve what they were aiming for, and all of them genuinely put in the effort to make these movies as best as they could within the framework of what they initially set out for, in contrast to blatant cash-grabs.
PS: This was written on the fly in one sitting with minimal editing/rewriting and I had no connection to the internet so I’ve left out the names of a lot of characters/actors because I forgot them or never learned them in the first place, thanks for understanding. Also, I am not well versed in the art of filmmaking so this is just the impression these movies had on me and why I as a viewer liked them so much. Final note, I apologize in advance for using the word “awesome” too much.
So here goes the list and my (very long) comments on them:
Lethal Weapon 4: A great movie overall, and this one aspect of the movie I want to emphasize is the realistic portrayal of martial arts. In most movies, when filmmakers attempt to characterize a good fighter he has to be an invincible guy performing ridiculous stunts, whether evil or good, but not in this movie. The characters of Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are old (one of them is a granpa!) and they engage the martial arts villain (Jet Li) in close combat at the end.
Jet Li’s character is made out to be a martial arts master, and the buildup of the impending fight between the heroes is great, given the enemy’s numerous demonstrations of martial arts prowess throughout the movie. However, at the end he is made out to be (thankfully) just another guy who’s incredibly fast and really well at fighting. Against two veteran cops he struggles a lot – and nearly kills each of them on two separate occasions during the fight. In general, the fight is shown to be extremely realistic and characterizes all three of them very well. Jet Li just lost his brother to one of the veteran cops – he was trying to print money just to save his brother and all of that doesn’t matter now, and he is full of rage and in kill mode, in contrast to his calm demeanor and fighting style seen earlier in the film.
Our protagonists had been avoiding a physical confrontation with him but both knew that they will have to deal with him one day or another – and in the final scenes, they decide to take him on, knowing full well what is at stake (not just their own lives, but the newfound peace/happiness in their lives in the form of family). As a viewer I felt that was an unnecessary risk for the both of them, one of them is about to be a granpa and the other is finally settling down, but they just go “what the hell” and decides to brawl. I mean, they could have just shot Jet Li, but I suppose they sort of felt bad for killing his “innocent” brother so wanted to give him a chance. The family relationships the movie showed throughout the film made us the viewers care for all the characters when they begin fighting, including the villain, in all honesty.
In the fight scene, the two are clearly outmatched and they know it, and near the end of the fight all three characters come close to dying, and they all go out at each other with everything they got – Jet Li attempts on multiple occasions to try to break bones and attempt to finish off one of the protagonists, and the other two use physical objects to try to just kill/subdue the guy as soon as they can because they are getting outmatched and simply can’t let the fight continue any longer or they will almost certainly get killed.
Also, the music in this movie really defined the mood. I think it was a blend of jazz and symphony, for our protagonists and the enemies, respectively. I don’t know how to explain it, but before I watched it again recently, the most memorable parts of the movie were its distinct soundtrack; and the build-up of Jet Li’s skills and the inevitable fight between him and our heroes, and the fight and its conclusion was very satisfying. Nothing was over-the-top.
The movie in general is very light-hearted, but a serious tone is added every time there are scenes with the Triads. The comedic, light-hearted feeling made more sense when you think that this is the 4th adventure of the two cops, and they are just chilling at this point, but the movie reminds us that there are still dangerous and evil people about in the world and the two cops aren’t finished with them yet. The final fight really had me worried to be honest, because it is in fact the 4th movie and the filmmakers might actually let Jet Li kill off one or maybe even both of the characters.
At the end when our heroes get to their families after their brutal confrontation, I felt they truly earned it.
Godzilla: I always loved this movie. The only part that got me somewhat bored was the part with smaller godzillas in the mall (?) where they chase our protagonists. Otherwise the whole movie was an amazing ride. The beginning of the movie, where everybody is discussing and discovering this new monster, and the whole mystery behind it, was very entertaining. After a re-watch, I thought a giant monster of this size disappearing between buildings (with helicopters unable to locate it) was quite unbelievable but overall the scene with helicopters was nevertheless satisfying.
An awesome aspect of this film is its attempt to explain what is happening in the movie to science – like the movie Iron Man demonstrated in 2008. It was a nuclear explosion that did it – and Leon the Professional is scheming behind the scenes to cover up that fact. So, in this sense the filmmakers made an effective transition of Godzilla’s origin to American audiences. I think the Japanese version is that Godzilla sort of just appeared from underwater and/or sent by a God, or something, which in any case would not be welcomed/understood by Western audiences, at least compared with what we got in this movie.
In the same vein, the reason I enjoyed the last King Kong movie “Skull Island” was that the mystery surrounding that secret island, it was reminiscent of Jules Verne’s Mysterious Island, and anything could be on it – including dinosaurs and giant gorillas.
I think if it only fixed some of the dialogue, removed/changed some of the boring parts and the scenes with the dinosaur completely disappearing, people would’ve enjoyed it a little more.
Year One: This movie is apparently a very bad movie but for me it was quite fun, especially the side character Cain. The dialogue between the two protagonists was especially entertaining, and Oh’s lines were just perfect – he is very much aware of exactly what’s going on but he never has the heart to act on it or resolve it somehow, he just makes these stinging, truthful comments on it but does nothing to actually solve it, which I found hilarious. The other main character played by Jack Black is somewhat naïve and blindly believes in something, but somehow things always seem to go his way, which strengthens his apparent delusion, but ultimately, he succeeds in what he had been trying to accomplish. Overall, this dude is just extremely lucky – and to be fair, he actually acts on what he believes is right unlike his accomplice Oh.
The character Cain was just downright insane, but provides half the entertainment in this movie. Events in the film is greatly enhanced by his introduction earlier in the story. On my re-watch I realized Cain’s brother that managed to kill himself by smashing himself repeatedly in the head with a huge rock is actually played by Ant-Man’s actor. Also, the village shaman had the most ridiculously funny make-up ever, and his attitude and interaction with the tribe/protagonists makes him out to be a really smart dude, but still hilariously within the intellectual boundaries of the barbaric tribe.
I felt the dialogue in the movie was funny in the way that the actors and the filmmakers all knew how ridiculous they are, and genuine effort was made in writing them and make it as entertaining as possible, and the delivery of these lines by the actors were right on point. I bet you, these guys had a blast making this movie. I felt they had a lot of great time, and when one of them comes up with an idea on the fly, they would just go “fuck it” and put it in the movie.
Troy: I always felt it is unfair to compare actual history/story with a Hollywood movie. The movie is taking the idea and trying to make money while giving the audience awesome entertainment, and also perhaps get them interested into the actual story. This applies to Troy, and also Gladiator. Both movies had just the right amount of history in it, but also managed to tell a great story to modern audiences.
After watching Troy, I decided to read an English translation of Homer’s Iliad, which I found surprisingly entertaining (the roster of heroes felt like Avengers, now that I think about it), but a chore at some points because of all the ramblings and details that I felt was unnecessary, like Jules Verne does in his books (the list of fishes and plants he enthusiastically describes in great detail in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is debilitatingly long and it is extra “dry” because the story is getting really interesting at that point and that part just completely halts the story in its tracks. A 21st century reader, folks.)
Anyway, the acting, the storyline and dialogue is awesome in this movie, and it presents a great rationale on why people back then had this blind belief in gods/supernatural powers. King Priam of Troy had three types of advisors, one believing in gods and omens (that priest) and the one that has logical reasoning (Hector) with whom I believe most of the audience agreed with, and the other guy who is the older military man who wouldn’t try to convince Priam to make a particular decision but always backs whatever decision he actually makes.
With this in mind, Hector’s death at the hands of Achilles was a big blow to my teen self. And in hindsight the movie did managed to get some emotion out of the viewers this way, in direct contrast to the “mindless action movie” as some critics described it. The other emotional moment for me was when Achilles finally gives in and apologizes to Hector (his body, that is). Overall it was a great movie, and the ending music titled “Remember Me” wraps up the story really well.
I must note the acting in this film. They really did well, almost all of them, especially the actors playing Agamemnon, Menelaus, King Priam, Hector’s wife, Achilles’ right-hand man, and also a lot of credit goes to the actor playing Prince Paris (Legolas) for really selling his role as a truly cowardly dude. Only acting I’d argue that was relatively bad is the actor playing Patroklos, and perhaps Helen, maybe because they are acting next to these great performers and are inevitably compared with them.
Brad Pitt as Achilles in my opinion is possibly the best acting he’s ever done, I’ve only seen him displaying this wide range of emotions in 12 Monkeys, and maybe Seven.
I feel the movie is more about Hector than Achilles, because as a viewer I related more with Hector, and it was painful to see all the misfortune he must endure because of actions of others he cares about (his younger brother Paris and his father Priam).
The fight between Hector and Achilles is a great, especially when you consider both warrior’s backgrounds. Achilles got somewhat tired for the first time in the movie during this fight, gets slashed by Hector, and later admits to Priam that Hector was the best warrior he ever fought.
Doom: I grew up watching the Rock, the Undertaker, Kane and the lot, and I think it was one of Rock’s earlier films when I first saw it. Excitement was 12 out of 10. I did know that Doom 3 was apparently one of the best games out there at that time and the only major complaint about the game was that the main character can’t hold a gun and a flashlight at the same time.
Well, the movie didn’t disappoint me at all. The action was great, the soldier characters were great, especially the main character played by (the guy who plays the latest Judge Dredd) and the Rock, of course. When the Rock said “I’m not supposed to die” just before he died I laughed out loud, it was so funny because I mean, he’s right, this is the Rock after all, he isn’t supposed to die in this movie! Another notable scene with the Rock is when he first obtains the BFG. That was hilarious.
The brawl between the soldier with the minigun and one of the monsters was awesome – embarrassingly, the monster got beat up pretty bad by that dude, and remember, this is a HUGE MONSTER with an extra-chromosome or whatever, but in the end the soldier got killed because he was just exhausted after beating up the monster a bit too much and the monster, being a monster, was able to absorb all the punishment and get right back up. I just wish this movie was a bit brighter in some of the scenes, otherwise it’s a fun movie – you want some of the soldier characters to survive and some others to die – and the movie delivers. That sleazy, asshole soldier gets killed in a hilarious fashion and one of the other characters literally scoffs at what’s happening to him.
The first-person-shooter part was great too, actually made me pursue the Doom 3 game and try it on a friend’s computer. One of the zombies, who we are led to believe are just zombies, actually makes a rational decision to just flee upon seeing the Doom guy because the dude is currently on a rampage.
Armageddon: I feel like I’m going down a territory where people will start hating me now but that’s okay. What really hit me is the main theme by Aerosmith (it was all over MTV at the time), mixed in with the relationships between the characters. I don’t remember everybody’s names but bear with me I’ll try my best to describe them.
The character of Bruce Willis is an arrogant type of guy who is overly protective of his daughter and at the last moment he decides to save his future son-in-law (who he disliked a lot) at the cost of his own life. As a father myself (who unfortunately spoils his kid a lot) this part of the movie made me question a lot of the decisions I made/make concerning my son. I’d like to believe Bruce’s decision was a bad one, but still very sad indeed. The members of his team also have smaller back stories too, the one that got me emotional was this older dude working with Bruce Willis who is separated/divorced, and before he goes on to this ridiculous suicide mission he asks his former wife if he can see his son again, but she says no. But the mother of his child finally says “That’s your dad” to her son when she realizes at the end of the movie what his son’s father was up to this whole time (saving the world). That reminded me of some of my family in a similar situation where they had kept terribly sad secrets and took a lot of heat for it for many years, and everyone realized what happened after they were dead and gone from this world and we all felt really, really bad. Oh man.
Anyway, the other character is the military guy who flies to the meteorite along with Bruce’s team, I don’t know the actor nor the character’s name – this is the guy who voiced Paul Rosenberg in the game GTA Vice City. I think this guy is the epitome of a patriot of humanity, his mission is to get to the meteor and ensure an explosion happens regardless of the situation – meaning the mission in his case is a literal suicide mission and he is 100% ready to die for humanity, and allow some others to die for humanity under his direction. In a way this character is inspiring for all the viewers who can see through the reason he pulls a gun on the main characters, and he makes the right decision in the end thanks to some convincing from Bruce Willis.
Overall, all this drama was sprinkled with other colorful characters played by many recognizable and talented actors, including the cowboy from Shanghai Noon; and mixed with some exciting special effects although I felt the camera was shaking too much in the meteorite scenes.
Resident Evil 1 & 2: This series of movies seem to take a lot of heat for a lot of its problems (many of them justified), but for me the first two movies were great, especially the first one. I’m a lifelong Resident Evil fan, at one point attempting to set a world record speed-run of Resident Evil 3 (got surprisingly close, too).
The characters, music and atmosphere of both movies were just enough to keep me entertained throughout. The recreation of Raccoon City, which is a prominent location in both RE2 and RE3 games, and introductions of the UBCS team and Nemesis were a dream come true for a RE fan. Presenting the story, these characters and locations to an audience who are unfamiliar with the games while also managing to satisfy the fans who can understand the decisions the filmmakers had to make to make sure the movie is profitable for future installments was a great achievement. Popular movies mean popular games – and popular games means better games.
The series went downhill from the 3rd movie for me, because the world just simply ended. I think the writer and director Paul W.S. Anderson, wrote himself into a corner when he decided to end the world between the 2nd and 3rd films. I think there are a lot of reasons he decided to do that, I mean he must have a lot more data on the market/viewers than we do because the movie managed to be profitable up until the final one.
Anyway, the games certainly went in the right direction – while both the game RE5 and the movie RE3: Extinction were set in a sunny, desert environment, RE5’s world hadn’t ended while RE3: Extinction was set in the post-apocalypse. In fact, in RE5 the player character must save a world-ending event. As I said, the movie director probably had discussions with the game developers and both decided to pursue what was best for their respective mediums.
I do admit that some of the dialogue from the first two movies could be considered as what we might call cheesy but you know what, they’re both great movies all the same. I went crazy when Jill showed up in the second movie and I expected her to kick all sorts of ass including Nemesis in the movie but Alice was the one to do it, which was totally fine (also, the idea of Nemesis being Matt from the first movie was a great one). I figured they should keep Alice the main character while the characters from the game like Jill and Carlos should play smaller, but notable roles in the movies. But she didn’t even appear in the 3rd film and as far as I can remember nobody even said anything about her absence in that movie.
I just feel a lot of opportunity was lost for the series when the filmmakers decided to end the world, and not even show it. I mean, events on the impending end of the world, and the actual end of the world, could have made two very interesting movies. Imagine after the second Harry Potter movie, the third movie begins with a Voldemort-controlled hellscape world where everyone is dead and Hermione is inexplicably not in it, and not even mentioned by any of the characters, and Ron sacrifices himself to take out 20 death eaters in the first 20 minutes because Neville Longbottom revealed his allegiance to Voldemort. Anyway, I digress.
I think this part turned into more into how I regret the direction the movies went rather than how great the first two movies are. I will certainly get into it.
I’m tired now I will continue this later.

With the next NFS in works, here is an extensive list of features I would enjoy seeing deployed into the game.
