Alright, this is a fairly comprehensive list of all the active launch sites on Earth as of the year 1999, in Overheaven’s alternate history timeline. Realistically, most of these only launch satellites, and the ones that do shoot people into space are probably doing so with capsules, though the more developed countries have fleets of reusable space planes (both manned and unmanned). The overwhelming majority of launches are going to be routine unmanned, reusable rockets sending up supplies or satellites or space station construction materials, and then touching back down on the launch pad like SpaceX's BFR (we get that level of reusable launch vehicle by the mid/late 70's, rather than the late 2010’s - amazing what you can accomplish when two superpowers feel the need to put thousands of nukes in orbit, because the 1967 Outer Space Treaty never happened). Many are run by the military or public-sector space agencies like the ESA, NASA, the Commonwealth Space Program, or Soyuzcosmos (the USSR's NASA counterpart), but I'm willing to bet that at least half (perhaps even two-thirds) of these are private-sector operations, and most non-military public-sector launch sites do private-sector flights as well. Rockets like the Sea Dragon theoretically don't really need launchpads, and while there might be launch facilities which specialize with Sea Dragon-type rockets, I think that the smaller spaceflight companies would just buy one of these rockets, strap the payload on top, and tow it out to sea near the equator for launch. And there's also air-launched sub-orbital vehicles (stuff like Virgin Galactic's White Knight), which I wager could take off from regular old airports on the backs of Boeing 747's or Antonov 124's. Some of these are existing rocket launch sites (mostly for sounding rockets), which I've turned into full-on Cape Canaveral/Baikonur-type facilities, while others are proposed locations for launch sites, and some are just good ideas I figured would work but never appeared in our timeline. Anyway, I'm pretty sure this is enough space infrastructure to serve as the basis for a smoothly-running interplanetary civilization by 1999, with the Internet still in its infancy. In Overheaven’s alternate timeline, the lack of an OST leads to a more aggressive and ambitious space race. Men on on Mars by 1976, men on Venus by 1978, and the construction of huge nuclear missile platforms in orbit by both superpowers. By the late 70’s, space industry was just getting started, and by the 80’s, the “Space Boom” was in full swing, baby. Experimental atomic research, rotating space hotels, medical and chemical research labs in orbit, space manufacturing, solar power satellites, mining near-earth asteroids, space tourism, orbital fuel depots, telecom sats, space casinos, offworld banking, and so much more. By the late 1990’s, the idea of people working and even living in space is still exciting, but it’s also pretty damn normal now. With all these launches, plus material being extracted from Luna and near-Earth asteroids, I think it's perfectly feasible for there to be a few Stanford Toruses, and at least one O'Neill Cylinder, under construction in Earth orbit by '99. And as launch costs continue to plummet, expect the scale of humanity's ambitions to only escalate. And these are just the launch sites on Earth. I don't even know how many orbital launch facilities there'd be by this point - huge space stations building truly-massive vessels in zero-g with all those resources we're shooting up on what I imagine is a daily or even hourly basis; ships like those, built and fueled in orbit, would undoubtedly be able to reach Mars, Venus, Mercury, the Main Belt and Jupiter with relative ease. And everything I've stated here will only continue to grow at a geometric rate as more of the Solar System's resources are harnessed, spaceflight costs continue to drop, and technology continues to improve. And we’re not talking about Overheaven’s current year, which isn’t actually 1999. It’s 2185. Oh, right. 17,991 subscribers so far. A community for only 2 months! How cool is that?! Welcome friends and family, welcome to the 2's-day edition of Subreddit of the Day. It's a really great one and I'm so glad you've joined us. We of all people understand that there's a metric ton of amazing subreddits out there, and about a brazillian other things that are in direct competition with us for your spare time. Right now you could be on amazon looking to buy that glass eye you keep talking about. You could be engaged in some wacky off-shore casino betting on Filipinos and a beard of bees! You could be out hunting the deadliest prey of all - man, or maybe you're the cast of Friends and you're at home waiting for the phone to ring. Whatever the case may be, somehow you made it to our front door. We may not say it as often as we should, and when we do say it our breath stinks from sucking all those one-inch-square alcohol swabs, but dammit we love you!! We love the fact that you read the write ups we plagiarize work so hard on, we love that you check out our mod interviews, but most of all, we love knowing you're there. Every comment, every modmail and PM is like 10 cc's of saline and sweet, sweet lovin'... it keeps the lights on in our cold black souls. So from the bottom of our hearts, and the heart of our bottoms, please accept our deepest and sincerest thanks for joining us. I spent the day thinking about approaching the idea of cool, thinking about defining it and somehow magically tying it all back up in the end with a nice bow, but explaining cool is really exhausting. Cool is such a moving target. Since the invention of leisure time, the idea of cool has always been one or two steps ahead of the masses. (I was going to reference a longer time period, but let's face it, pre-industrial revolution folks had no time for cool). (Parenthetically speaking, of course). So everyone's got time on their hands and they're now concerned with style, with taste, the confidence with which you handle yourself and a few other qualities. Some folks are sticking out as doing "it" better than others and viola, you've got a set you can identify as cool. But wait, not so fast Madonna. Everyone's copying your hairy sausage wallet so get your ass into some neon and start wearing odd fitting garments. See how this works? Do you see what I'm up against?! Well fortunately, as fortune would have it, the great people at /OldSchoolCool have put their foot down. "Enough is enough," they cried in their best Samuel L. Jackson voices. This place is amazing. Great posts, great content (yes they are two different things!), and amazing posts. Go get a glass of Diet Dr.Pepper, put on Ween's 12 Golden Country Greats and start digging the amazing posts. You owe it to yourself!! Here to fully explain how this place works is my newest best friend, wemtastic. To be fair, really, he's more wemaverage or wemsevenoutoften.
Alright, please explain /OldSchoolCool to us all. How does it fit into the sea of subreddits?
Our tagline is “history’s cool kids, looking fantastic” The brilliant thing about this, purposely vague, description is that it’s totally subjective. One person’s cool is another person’s fool, which means we get everything from great uncles hanging out in front of F-104 Starfighters, to Raquel Welch flaunting her oh-so-fine bosom. Nowhere on planet Reddit, will you find such a wide variety of coolness on one page. Why do we need such a subreddit? Not to wallow like hipsters in nostalgic, but to remember that those old people you see every single day we’re once as kick ass cool as you. And probably even cooler.
Okay, got it. So what makes a good post? Is it the photograph that's cool or is it the subject?
That’s a great question. If by good you mean loads of karma love, then beautiful girls, surprise, surprise get a lot of upvotes. But, every single day, something amazing crops up. Our most popular ever subs have been a saucy Fifties matinee idol, a dude skateboarding in a suit and trilby and a French partisan looking dapper as fuck, while waiting to machine gun Nazis, closely followed by someone's Dad wearing shades and white flares chillin’ next to his Trans Am. So, it’s definitely subject rather than photograph that makes a killer post. A combination of both and you’ll reach the stars.
You had some incredible attention early on, can you share that story?
Yeah, we’ve blazed up the reddit rankings faster than Yuri Gagarin on crystal meth. In fact, I think if you ignore stuff like tittywankcumface, we’re one of the fastest, if not the fastest growing reddit in town. Currently we sit just beneath socialism and redheads, (there’s a gag there somewhere), and while they’re 3 and 4 years old, we’ve only been going for three months. We had a couple xposts on pics early on, mainly semi naked OldSchoolCool girls, which made front page. Then it really snowballed from there, to the extent that after a month or so we got blogs writing about us. I think there’s a few reasons why we’re still growing so quick. Firstly, we don’t dictate what’s cool, we let voters do that. Secondly, when you post something you’re pretty much guaranteed some love. OldSchoolCool is one of those reddits where people dish out upvotes out like candy. It’s a feel good reddit. Finally, there’s nowhere else on reddit a picture of your granddad will be so easily sandwiched between Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot
Is there a modern day equivalent to oldschoolcool content? Why only focus on oldschool? What do you have against technology and modern life?!
No, can’t think of one. NewSchoolCool doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. We only focus on OldSchool because we’re constantly bombarded with images of what’s meant to be cool in the now. Hang out online, turn on the TV, open a magazine, it’s right in your face. OldSchoolCool isn’t about being anti modern or anti technology. I mean we’re all redditors so, even if we love checking out the past, we’re still spending way too much time long online. It’s more about celebrating the past in a different way and showing how true coolness is timeless, a state of mind, rather than what brand of trainers you wear or how much “swag” you have.
Last paragraph is yours - please take the mic and say something cool.
First off, thanks a bundle for having us here! We know what a privilege it is to be amongst such fine company. As a sign of our tie dyed appreciation, you’re now officially today’s OldSchool Kings of Cool. Hopefully, you’ve got an insight what rocks our world. We want to spread the OldSchool love as far and wide as the rolling fields of Woodstock. So if the thought of hanging out with history’s cool kids rocks your world too, we’d love to have you join our merry band. It doesn’t matter what you wear, just as long as you’re happy with flowers (and headbands) in your hair! OldSchoolPeace Wemtastic
