THE INTERVIEW
GENERAL BACKGROUND
For those who don't know anything about you, what can you tell us about yourself and your background?
Well, I've been performing magic for over 30 years. I perform close to 600 magic shows a year right now, with my card-throwing being a niche of my act. So I'm not just a card thrower, but I am a professional entertainer. I was an NCAA pitcher in college, and I developed my strength of my card throwing by throwing a baseball 90-plus miles per hour.
What can you tell us about the Guinness World Records you have set?
I have three Guinness Book world records for throwing playing cards. My first world record was set in 2002, for throwing a playing card 72 yards at a speed of 92 miles per hour.
My other two world records were set in 2015 and 2017, one for throwing a card the most accurate, which was 46 out of 52 cards to a target in under a minute. The other world record was for throwing the highest, which was 70 feet and some odd inches straight up in the air.
What does a typical day or month in the life of Rick Smith Jr look like?
Typically, I have been a prize for a fundraising company for the past ten years. I would perform three school shows during the week, Monday through Friday. My weekends, I would travel. I would perform for different companies and corporations around the world, and the school tour thing lasted for ten years. There was 400 shows a year.
An average day: I'll try to come up with some new material, perform the shows, post on social media, and hang out with family and friends when I can. I work a lot.
What are some of your interests and hobbies outside of magic and throwing playing cards?
Going to sporting events. I was a baseball player, and we're from Cleveland, so we go to different Cleveland Indian games. I played baseball up until a couple years ago, after I had an elbow injury, where I had to have surgery, which was both baseball and card-throwing-related. So I gave up baseball.
Also four-wheeling, hanging out with family, cooking on the grill - those are my hobbies right now.
Aside from your world records, what would you consider to be your biggest accomplishments, and things you're most proud of?
I guess my girls. I have a three-year-old, Aubrey, and I have a five-year-old, Averie. Having kids now, it's changed my life. When I'm not performing, I'm going to dance recitals and taking them for swimming lessons and Little Gym and getting them into sports and baseball and soccer and basketball. So I'm spending a lot of my time with those two, and there's one more on the way in August. So it's going to change my life even more, coming up.

THROWING PLAYING CARDS
Throwing playing cards looks amazing, but why should we learn how to do it?
You don't have to learn how to do it. It's just something fun to do. Being able to be at a party and being able to take a playing card and be like, "Hey, let me slice that celery in half" - that's something that I do that no one in the world has ever commonly done. It made me unique as a performer.
I used my baseball background to be able to throw the cards so far, and the accuracy just came with practice. People kept asking me to do different types of challenges, and I kept on testing my abilities. Sooner or later, I was slicing olives being thrown up in the air or taking a cup off of somebody's head or slicing a vegetable in half.
So if you want to learn it, it's just a cool skill to have. It's not going to make you any money, unless you devote your life to it and add it to something that you love to do. Since I loved to be a magician, I wasn't going to make a living off just throwing cards. It was more of a hobby, and wasn't something that I was like, "Oh, this is going to be my job. I'm going to be a card thrower." It just became something that I can showcase in my magic acts, which made my magic acts more popular, which made me more money.
How difficult is it to learn how to throw playing cards for the average person?
The average person can learn how to throw a playing card fairly quickly, with the right technique, the right hold, the right flick of the wrist. Anyone can throw a playing card, just like anyone can throw an object.
Everyone can play a piano and can play Mary Had a Little Lamb, but not everyone can play Beethoven. So if you want to get good with it and confident with it, you're just going to have to keep practicing it. Doing it well is not something that you're just going to be able to do instantly. It's going to take years of throwing and figuring out what the cards can do and what they can't do. Once you realize what they can do, then you can create the trick shots that you want to create.
What else can you tell us about the process involved in setting your first Guinness World Record for card throwing?
The story with the first world record, the distance world record, comes down to the baseball locker room. In the locker room, before practices, we would goof around. I would perform magic for some of the guys in the locker room. But we would also roll up our socks and throw them across the room and try to hit people. One day, I got hit with a sock, and I didn't have a sock to throw back, so I grabbed out my deck of cards and took out one playing card, threw it, and gave one of my buddies the worst paper cut of his life. I thought they were going to be mad, but they thought it was the coolest thing that they've ever seen. So we practiced throwing a couple cards in the locker room, and that was it for that day.
The next day, one of the other teammates brings in a Guinness Book of World Records. He goes, "Hey, there's actually a Guinness world record for throwing playing cards, 201 feet, and it's held by this magician guy named Jim Carroll. I bet you can beat it." So we called up Guinness World Records. We called up every local news station, every newspaper, everything that you could do. In the year 2002, there was no social media, no YouTube, or anything of that caliber. So if you wanted to get it out there, you went to Associated Press. We went to the Plain Dealer, the News Herald. Basically, we told everybody we were going to break this world record for throwing a playing card, and we had no idea if people were going to show up or not.
What response did you get to your world record attempt and afterwards?
Guinness showed up. Every single news station showed up. Every newspaper showed up. It took about 30 throws because of the air flow in the room, but after I broke the world record, I made the front page of the Plain Dealer. It went to Associated Press and it went viral before viral was a thing. Every news station, newspaper, radio station in the world was contacting me and asking me, "What did you do?" This wasn't even a stunt, and it wasn't even "Can you slice something in half?" This was just throwing a playing card 72 yards! It had nothing to do with anything other than throwing a card a long distance.
But the following day, I was in class in college all day after this stuff got published, not knowing what was going on. And all of the voicemails were like, "Hi, this is the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Please give us a call back." "Hey, this is so-and-so from Ripley's Believe It or Not. Give us a call back." "Hey, this is the Steve Harvey Show. We're doing a TV show called Steve Harvey's Big Time. We'd love for you to be a part of it. Please give us a call back." "Hi, this is the Wayne Brady Show, blah blah blah." I had voicemails from London, BBC, radio, so many different places. I was doing interviews like crazy.
That's how I got into the card-throwing. It was all a mistake. It was all from throwing a sock, to throwing a playing card, to giving the kid the worst cut of his life, to finding out there was a world record, to breaking the world record, and then getting contacted by media all around the world. It's crazy.
How did your other two Guinness World Records for card throwing come about?
For the other record, I went on this local station in Cleveland - FOX 8 - and I said, "Hey, I'd like to break a world record." They were like, "Hey, why don't you break it on our show?" So it was just a morning segment. It wasn't anything crazy, and I broke the world record on the segment. I didn't get any press out of it, other than FOX 8 in the morning. I broke the world record, and sent it to Guinness. They approved it, and I got my plaque.
I broke the record for the height on Pi Day, and we ended up getting thousands of people to show up at the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland, Ohio. We decided to do a magic show, as breaking the Guinness Book world record. I stood at the bottom floor of the science center and hit the ceiling of the science center, and we had people from different news stations there, as well as Plain Dealer, again. It didn't go viral or anything, and no one seemed to care, other than, "Hey, it's just the new world record." But it was an accomplishment. It was right after another surgery that I had on a piece of bone that was in my elbow that I broke that world record.
Do you have your eye on any other records, or do you have any plans to beat the ones you currently hold?
I was supposed to. In April, I was supposed to go to Italy to break a world record for the most cards thrown around a human in under a minute. That's on hold due to the world situation right now.
What can you tell us about your baseball background, and how has this impacted your ability in throwing playing cards?
My training and ability to pitch is the only reason I could throw cards so well. If you want to break the world record, it's possible, and I could teach you how to throw a playing card. But the only way that someone's going to be able to break my world record is they can throw a baseball 90 miles an hour plus. You could flick a card as hard as you want, but if you don't have that arm speed and that power from your legs and your body to be able to throw a baseball 92 miles an hour, there's no way in the world that you're going to get enough power behind your playing card.
I broke the world record in my peak of NCAA baseball. So if I teach a Major League Baseball pitcher how to do it, I can see that they would have a fair chance. But no one's going to break the record unless they're an NCAA athlete or higher. I just don't see it happening. Not to be cocky about it - I'm just saying it's going to be hard. That day I was warming up by throwing a ball, and then I broke the world record.
The world record has to be set indoors. It has to be set with no wind flow. We had to shut all the air conditioners off. We had to shut all the doors. There was no air flow, and it was weird, because when I first did go break the world record, I kept on throwing 200 feet, 199 feet. It kept on stopping, and then we ended up switching sides, because there was still an air flow, like some kind of vent. We switched sides, and I broke the world record the second or third throw after that. It hit the bleachers and bounced back 15 feet. So maybe I could've thrown it a little further, but Guinness took the world record from where the card landed, not where it hit.
Are there particularly memorable experiences you've had with your card throwing for TV shows?
America's Got Talent, the Tonight Show, and Shark Tank were probably my favorite TV shows to appear on. On Shark Tank I was able to perform magic as well as my card-throwing stunts, and it was on a major TV network at a prime time. So they got my magic and my card-throwing out in one episode.
America's Got Talent was one of the bigger stages that I got to perform on. I never got X'ed, and a lot of people watch that show, so that was another fun one to get recognized from. There were other shows that were fun to be on, like the Tonight Show. They all just have different audiences, and have different reasons for being the best show at the time. With the Ellen DeGeneres show, I got to throw cards with Ellen, and it was a timeframe and different audience that I'd never reached before. The Tonight Show is just a late night show audience, college kids, and was also another group that I'd never reached.
I have a lot of favorite TV shows. Even on Ripley's Believe It or Not, the first show I ever performed on, I was treated like gold. They flew me to Vegas to film in front of thousands of people, and I got to do stunts for the very first time, ever. I did thinks that I'd never done before for the very first time on TV, and that was so memorable.
Of the many videos online in which you appear, which is your favourite one, and why?
With YouTube channels I've been able to work with some of the best YouTubers in the world. When I did the first Card Throwing Trick Shots video with Dude Perfect, the video went viral. It trended in the number one spot on YouTube for an entire day. It had over 20 million views in the first week, and we're over 137 million views now. They got card-throwing out to the biggest audience in the fastest amount of time, and made me the most recognizable around the world for the age group of kids. Kids would recognize me anywhere I'd go, non-magic-related, just because they're huge Dude Perfect fans.
But Dude Perfect led into other big collaborations with Mark Rober, the mechanical engineer from NASA; with David Dobrik, going to his house and performing trick shots with all of his friends, and with Florian "Venom" Kohler, the pool trick shot artist from Las Vegas. And there's a whole bunch of others: Carter Sharer, Juggling Josh, Logan Broadbent, the Slow Mo Guys, the Modern Rogue, and Scam Nation. All of these other YouTube channels have just totally launched my YouTube career; I thought that I would have reached 300 million people in such a short amount of time.
What impact did these viral videos have on your career?
I have been able to charge higher fees and I have been more in demand. I've got some of the biggest shows of my life since then. I've been able to travel to other countries and do my card-throwing and magic in places that I never thought possible. I've had a few agents ask to hire me for different events. I've done just card-throwing shows, even if they were only ten minutes long. At times I been paid more to do a ten-minute card-throwing show than for my Las Vegas-style magic show!
So yes, it has gotten me out there, and the demand right after that video was so great that I couldn't handle all the shows. I started working with other magicians and people in my area, and we developed a really good entertainment agency ourselves called the Cleveland Entertainers, where we book different entertainers. When leads come in and I can't fulfill them personally, we say: "Rick's not available, but we have so-and-so that would be a good fit for your party." It is another way to make some extra money, but it also gives a lot of friends in my network some extra shows that they didn't have coming.
How many takes does it typically take you to accomplish the kinds of feats we see you do in viral videos like your first video with Dude Perfect and others?
Dude Perfect took place in one and a half days. The first day, we started at 11 and ended at 5. The second day we started at 11 and ended at 1:30 or 2:30, because I had to fly back. Most of the trick shots were fast, and didn't take a long time at all. The only thing that took time in between each trick shot was setting up the cameras. The trick shots that you would think would be the hardest to take place, like the olive slicer where Cody would throw the olive up in the air and I would slice it in half? A lot of people say "That had to take you all day," but I can honestly do that one out of every six throws. I probably cut that olive six or seven times, just to get the right and perfect camera angle that we needed for that shot.
Making a basket from a full court? Some people say, "Oh that probably took you all day." Believe it or not, that was my second throw. It happened, and we were done with it. We had set aside 20 minutes to do that shot, but I did it within the first minute.
No one would believe what was the hardest shot of that whole video. It would be the balloon that was hanging on the second level, and I was standing below, and had to throw the card upwards and pop the balloon hanging about 50 feet away. That was the hardest shot of the whole video, because I had to throw upwards at an angle, and I had to hit the balloon, and I had to pop it. So that one probably took the longest - I think we worked on it for 20 minutes. Then we went to lunch, and we came back. Right after lunch, we were about to give up, and then I got it. So 20 or 25 minutes was the longest we spent on any trick shot in that video. But a lot of them were first or second try.
What instructional videos have you produced that we should know about?
If you want to learn some magic and some card-throwing, I have a free tutorial and some more tutorials on my YouTube channel. I also have some behind the scenes of the card-throwing and some in-depth training on a DVD called Velocity, which is available on my website.
What's the worst injury you've experienced as a result of throwing playing cards?
I would say it was the elbow. I tore the UCL in the elbow, and I had to have that replaced. The first time was with a cadaver and that broke. Then the second time, they took my hamstring from my left leg, and they built it into my right arm. They did a figure eight twice to strengthen that ligament strong enough so when I threw a card or ball or whatever I was throwing, I wouldn't tear that ligament again. But that puts you out six months. I still could do magic and card throwing, but I did it with my other arm.
What do you think the worst damage a playing card could do if you threw it at someone?
It can definitely give you a paper cut, that's for sure. I think that's the worst thing you could do. I don't think you're going to kill somebody with a playing card, but you can definitely make somebody bleed. You can definitely stick a card into somebody, if you throw it hard enough. But it'll give you the worst paper cut of your life, so I recommend you don't throw at people, even though I've done it to friends of mine.
If you're going to have your card battle, you're going to want to have glasses or a welder's mask. I have a gauntlet glove. I give people Styrofoam targets to put on, the UFC gloves with targets put onto them. So if I'm doing this in a live show, people are 100% protected, and nothing is going to happen to them.
What advice would you give to someone who is interested in learning how to do card throwing for fun?
If you want to learn how to throw cards for fun, I would just say hop onto my YouTube channel. Check out the different tutorials. Grab some Styrofoam targets, some playing cards, and practice throwing them.
What can you tell us about the card-throwing competition at your shows?
I have a card-throwing competition now that is live for anybody that wants to come to one of my shows, offering $1,000 if they can hit a target three times in a row and stick their cards into the target. People come up, and whoever throws a playing card the farthest gets to throw three cards into the target. I demonstrate that it's possible right in front of them, and then I give them the same three cards, or three new cards, depending on what they want, and let them try to throw the cards as well.
If they do it, they win the money. If not, they get other prizes. They can win a deck of cards, they can win $100, or they can win the grand prize of $1,000. It's usually done live, in front of hundreds of thousands of people. No one's won yet, but I've given a couple hundred dollars away, and I've given probably 15 decks of cards away for people that have stuck one card into the target. I've had a couple good kids out there that are ready to take my money.

PLAYING CARDS
Should we use old playing cards for practicing our card throwing?
I'm pretty much a diva when it comes to playing cards, and I've used Bicycle playing cards my entire life. I'll probably use them forever for practice. But once I throw a playing card and it gets bent, I can't throw it again. The accuracy and precision comes with a perfectly non-touched playing card. Once oil is on our hands or once the card gets crinkled or once it gets bent or the heat hits it and it starts warping a little bit, I can't throw those cards accurately. So I would say you can practice throwing or get the technique down with old playing cards. But if you're going to try a trick shot, to have the accuracy and precision that they're looking for, you're going to have to go buy a brand-new deck, never touched by a human.
What type of playing cards did you first use when you started card throwing and magic?
I typically use Bicycle playing cards. I've been a Bicycle fan since I broke the world record in 2002.
For magic I always thought Bicycle playing cards were cards that didn't look like trick cards. They look like the standard deck that everybody has, so when performing magic with them, people didn't think it wasn't a trick deck.
What playing cards do you use for card throwing today?
I still throw Bicycle playing cards, but I had special cards when I worked with De'Vo. When he created the Chrome Kings, I thought those would be a really good card to use because of how they looked in slow motion. I started collaborating with De'Vo as much as I could, because the cards that he created were always different than anything else that I saw on the market. He put a lot of work into it, and I used a lot of his different decks on different TV shows when doing card-throwing appearances. People would see those cards, and they got a lot of interest, and they would say things like "Oh, those are really sick-looking cards" or "They look really cool in slow motion." So I ended up collecting every single deck that De'Vo has created, and I have them hanging in my office on a nice plaque.
We've been friends for years, and he finally said, maybe two years ago, "Let's create a deck of cards just for you." So we created the Falcons, and that's what I have now. That's what I've been selling and giving away and promoting for the last year now.
What playing cards have you personally been involved with producing?
I developed the whistle for the Banshee throwing playing cards. Banshees were created by Murphy's Magic, while the whistle was created by me. So Banshees and Banshees Advanced are playing cards that you can throw that have a measuring system. I used the Chrome Kings that De'Vo developed for most of the first video for Dude Perfect. In my second collaboration video, I used my new Falcons, which have a gold and silver edition. We just released a cool Kickstarter for the Falcon Razor deck.
Do you need a special deck of cards like the Banshees or Chrome Kings for card throwing?
A brand new Bicycle-quality card is fine. I use all the different cards for different reasons. The Chrome Kings looked amazing in slow motion, and I liked the way that they looked. When we used 10,000 frames per second, it looked like a blade was coming right at the vegetable that I was throwing at. The Banshees were heavier, so when I did the long distance bottle-breaker on Dude Perfect, the Banshee card was the thickest card I had at the time that was strong enough to be able to break the sugar glass. The Falcon throwing cards which De'Vo and I created last year are a little bit thicker, the thickest stock that USPC has ever printed on. So my Falcon deck is the only deck that is printed on that stock, which gives it an edge over other cards, because they are a little bit heavier than your typical Bicycle playing card.
Bicycle cards are perfect to practice with. I've used them to break my Guinness Book world record. I feel that if someone wanted to break a world record for distance, that they would need to use a card like the Bicycle playing cards and not a Falcon playing card, because a Falcon would almost be considered cheating, because it's definitely a heavier card, and the heavier card will definitely throw farther than your typical card.
What are some of the other qualities we should know about your personal Falcon Throwing Cards?
There's a marking system on them, not for magic, but for card-throwing. There's a star measuring system for how far you would throw a card into a target.
There are gimmicks that are built with the silver Falcons and the gold foil of the gold Falcons. There's a double backer in the silver Falcons. There's two Jokers with a gimmick card, where you can force a card in the falcon's talons for the regular deck. Then there's a new reveal card in the new silver edition.
Other than that, it looks almost like a blade when you're throwing them in slow motion, so they look pretty cool when you hit them with the high-speed camera.
What playing cards do you use for performing magic?
My magic deck is still Bicycle. I still prefer them over any other deck that I've used for performing magic, unless I'm at a really high-end event and I want to have a fancy deck of cards. I will browse my collection and grab one of De'Vo's earlier decks. I'm not against other companies though, and I have decks from David Blaine, Art of Play, and Theory 11. I probably have thousands different decks of cards, if not more. Some decks of cards, other magicians give to me. Some decks of cards, I've received as gifts. So I like playing cards all around.
Are you a playing card collector at all yourself, and if so, what can you share about your personal collection?
I have a lot of decks of cards, but I don't have all the rare decks. I have never got into collecting like some of my friends who are professional card collectors. I do have some rare decks, like some decks from World War I and II. And I have lots of the different Bicycle brand decks. But my biggest collection is De'Vo's collection. That was the one series of cards that I wanted to make sure that I had every deck. So I do.

Cannot for the life of me seem to setup a Node-Scheduler in our pre-launch nodeJS application.

Update: Solution solved. Thanks for helping me localize the specific issue. In one part I was not thinking correctly about the imports and depedencies and then once I figured it out, I figured out a typo configuration issue. The solution was to:
change code
from:
scheduler
scheduler.start()

Specific Question: How do I set up a scheduler like Chron / Node-Scheduler within a pre-launch nodeJS application. First reddit post after 10 years of stubbornly lurking on reddit, so clearly I am very very motivated to solve this problem and desperate for help / advice :)
I may need to set up a scheduler in nodeJS to run certain batch data analytics functions that generate our mongo data collections. If I provided more details than you're interested, feel free to just read the bold which hits the key points. For now I just want to try it out and spend no more than 1-2 days playing around to see if this is a fruitful path.
The technical issue: I can't seem to install a Scheduler in our existing nodeJS project that uses typescript.
The business context / issue: the particular way we use a route triggered by a key user action in our workflow to update our key data analytics layers [which are the core of the Product] is proving to be a not useful pattern
I suspect that setting up a timer to call the functions to build the data analytics layers might be a fruitful way to get the server and database to cooperate.
I've received the feedback - encapsulate and test - but there isn't a specific function that isn't running well in isolation.
So please help me node community!
Thank you!

Recently a well-known moderator, allthefoxes, started commenting with giant walls of text in /aww - sample below. The intent was to get spammer accounts banned.
While I always appreciate feedback, I'd vastly prefer it if you used modmail instead of spamming giant text screeds into the comments.
Now, since you appear to have an axe to grind with the /aww mod team, let's talk. Oh, and I used this post because I have some work and responsibilities to take care of, and a Slack conversation would be difficult to follow.
Here's the text screed:

Warning

It is very likely that this account is an "account farmer" or karma farmer!
Account farming is creating many accounts and posting low-effort content in an attempt to age them and build karma so they can be more useful for spamming, SEO, or vote manipulation.
Also known as "account fattening" and "karma farming", account farming is presently dominated by Hindi/Urdu speakers, with clues suggesting the major hubs are in Pakistan and India. When questioning some of the users we've identified as farmers, we've been able to glean that some are following tutorials posted on YouTube, which means that there is a cottage industry that has grown up around using reddit and other social media sites to make money.
It is not clear that they are all organised into a handful of companies directly hiring people to spam reddit—although that is happening as well—but that there are hundreds and possibly thousands of independent opportunists who hear about ways to make money online, read a few blogs or YouTube videos about it, and start following one of the many tutorials available.

Monetisation

The main ways they make money from account farming appear to be:
  1. Promoting monetised YouTube channels and accounts
  2. Promoting/SEO-ing an ad-supported blog or web site
  3. Selling seasoned accounts to account dealers such as [rm'd, banned link]
  4. Selling seasoned accounts to vote manipulation firms such as [rm cant use this link]
  5. Spamming porn or streaming video sites
They need accounts with age and karma in order to overcome the account-based obstacles that reddit and its mods have erected to deal with the spam problem. /videos uses AutoModerator to remove any posts from accounts below a certain karma level, for example. Creating a subreddit (popular with the streaming sports video spammers) now requires an account above a certain age and karma level. And the bot that auto-shadowbans accounts reported to /spam ignores accounts above a certain karma level.
We also suspect, but do not know, if reddit discounts upvotes from new or low-karma users, but it would explain the use of account farming from those intending to sell the account to vote manipulation firms.

Characteristics

This list is constantly growing as the more sophisticated or ambitious account farmers try new techniques. In the beginning (only a year ago as I write this), it was rather easy: FirstLast## account names (eg: "JohnSmith56", "MaryStuart47"), new user, low-effort posts, and robot-like posting. Many continue to try the FirstLast## formula, and they are probably newcomers reading old tutorials.
Unfortunately, the leading characteristic is still a poor grasp of English and a general ignorance of western culture, which means you need to be careful and avoid banning an innocent user. You are not Deckard, and sometimes you can retire a human by mistake.

Anti-characteristics

As important as the above are disqualifying behaviours, since there are lots of users who can exhibit the above characteristics but turn out to be false-positives anyway.
No offence /aww, but you guys really need to get a handle on this issue. At /pics we are doing all we can to stop it
Reddit gold for up to 5 people, I bet that within 3 months the OPs account will be used for spamming or shadowbanned by then

How to use Reddit to improve your knowledge of sports

How to use Reddit to improve your knowledge of sports

https://preview.redd.it/b811yfjmj8k31.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cc198fd0618e93aeb821784f166a246dc4c593f6
Now, as you are well aware, Reddit is an incredible resource for learning about a wide variety of things. From beauty to managing your finances, it seems there’s nothing you can’t learn about on the internet’s favorite forum.
So, with this in mind, it should come as no surprise that there’s a seemingly endless list of subreddits that are an ‘everything you need to know’ for pretty much every sport-related activity. Below we’ve listed some of the biggest forums that can help you improve your knowledge of sports.

Football (soccer)

Now, we’re not talking about the NFL here, but the global game of soccer. As soccer is the game that is supposedly the most popular sport in the world (4 billion fans can’t be wrong, eh?), there are so many threads that it’s hard to keep up. In the main subreddit of soccer, there are 1.6 million active users, or what they call “season ticket holders”.
At any given time, there could be thousands of soccer fans online sharing their thoughts on the latest transfer moves or how their team is faring in their respective leagues. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find subreddits for pretty much every professional league in the world. Want to learn how to train properly? No problem. Need to know some stats for a particular player? You’ll find plenty of resources here, too.

Poker

We’re going from the most popular sport on the planet to the most popular card game. Poker has always been a game with avid fans, but in recent times the rise of online poker has seen a new and fresh poker community grow and thrive in online forums. Although the main poker subreddit has only 111,000 members, you’ll find some really interesting tips and guides on improving your game, even for absolute beginners.
Incidentally, many of the top poker providers offer tutorials on their websites. Some of them have opted for online courses, where it is possible to develop a complete strategy and an online forum where you can interact with other pokers players or try some live training. Now, if you want to know which is the best, then ask on the poker subreddit, and you’ll get an honest response.

Basketball

While the general basketball subreddit only has 40,000 members, the NBA subreddit boasts over 2.6 million members. Wow—and we thought soccer was popular! It seems that the world of basketball revolves around the NBA, so who are we to argue?
There are even plenty of subreddits for NBA teams, each packed with knowledgeable fans dying to share their opinions on their favorite team. There are some really interesting threads in the main NBA subreddit, though, such as how LeBron forgot he wasn’t playing for the Heat and blocked one of his own teammates. The comments on that particular thread are great, as they offer good insight into how the game is supposed to be played and what could be going through the mind of a player.

Betting

Come on, let’s face it.. Betting on sports is a really big deal. And whether or not you’re into placing wagers on the action, the threads on betting subreddits can actually be treasure troves of insights. In all honesty, they’re great places for fantasy sports pickers to learn about how their picks might fare.
On Reddit there is a complete forum (with more than 14,000 members) for learning about the main news, tips and picks in the sporting field. Once you have gleaned some of those useful insights we mentioned earlier, you can then use one of the main aggregators of bookmakers, like Oddschecker, for example, to make comparisons among the odds offered by the various major betting sites.

Baseball

https://preview.redd.it/d56d8ewoj8k31.jpg?width=810&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e95c82c7be8348fadf6bf0ccc4d96e372d554ce6
The main baseball subreddit now has 998,000 members, and it’s just a matter of time before that hits the magic million marker. That’s pretty astounding for a game that is really only played professionally in the US and some smaller nations such as Japan and Taiwan.
So, is it all about the MLB? In a word, yes. There’s very little discussion about any other leagues or teams outside the MLB, unless there’s a major international tournament going on. Even then, the MLB team news still tops the charts. Having said that, it still is a great place to learn as much as you can about the professional game. As you know, it’s a game of stats, and so there are hundreds of threads discussing the importance of a player or team’s numbers and how these can be used to predict future results. Again, this can be very useful for fantasy sports pickers or anyone that likes a bet on a game.
Reddit is a veritable minefield of information on sports. And the fact that you can engage in discussion makes it all the more of an enjoyable resource for learning. So, if you want to learn something about your favorite game, forget Wikipedia and get on Reddit.

[Jenkinsverse] The League of the Ungentlemanly Warfare - Mr Tamborine Man

Hello there
[Previously]
As always I remind everyone that this is not cannon! This is a fan-fiction surrounding events from the awesome Jenkinsverse by Hambone3110. I hope he doesn't hate it too much.
A big thank you for AnomalousReading for helping with the editing.
Critics, suggestions are always welcome.
Another reminder, Jonas is Brazilian, some translations will sound weird on purpose, for example, Brazilian don't say 'gave birth' we literally say 'She gave the light' and we say 'Puta merda' a lot, which literally translate to 'Whore Shit'. I also refuse to use the word soccer, and using football could be confusing for the American readers, I just didn't translate the word Brazilians use. And Eva learned how to filter translation to not work on her curse words. Meaning that I find Spanish curse words more fun to read and to give her more personality.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date point: 1-week BV. The Fractal Simulation, stationed on space lane 1337.
Jonas Malva.
Jonas was surprised how easy was to admit it, but being close to death was the best thing that ever happened to him.
Sure, almost dying had to happen at the precise time and in the right place.
Was it painful to be burned alive? Sure it was.
Could he still remember how awful his burnt hair and skin smelled? Those scents wouldn’t go away any time soon.
Did he have vivid nightmares about diving into an explosion of gasoline almost every night? Fuck sleeping anyway! Who needed shut-eye when you had the human and the alien internet at the grasp of your thoughts? The alien had the technology to download 2% of the human internet like it was just an app! Too bad Flny filtered porn. He was thorough with that job.
And Jonas was a human, an enhanced one of all things, in freaking space! Humans were badass here! And he was being tutored by a gray, er, Corti and Count Dooku himself?
Could this get any better? Oh, it was better; thank you Colombia for giving the light to this Amazon queen, Eva Martinez. Even her name sounded sexy to him. He struggled to not ask for death by snu-snu. She seemed to have zero sense of humor, however, so he should really know when to keep his mouth shut. Also, she is mourning some guy. Some respect is in high demand.
Sir Lane devoted his time to improving his own body. Jonas was still amazed by the senior practicing Tai Chi Chuan in high gravity!
Flny wasn't very talkative outside of briefing meetings. Jonas believed, and hoped the others as well, that the Corti wasn’t evil, just amoral. It was hard to hate someone that just couldn’t understand empathy.
For the young hacker, Flny reminded him of the Houyhnhnm, except for the lying part. Corti must lie their brains out. He pitied the alien species as a whole to think their eugenics project was in anyway successful.
For Jonas, his best conversations nowadays happen in his head. Making him more lonely.
One week practicing how to work a computer with his mind instead of a keyboard made remarkable signs of progress. Jonas assumed root access to all controls of the ship on the third day he was awake. Thanks to the information he had available, the galaxy was his domain now, as long as it was connected to this dataspace. Truly amazing. Was neural data storage a thing he could have? Some extra memory could be handy. He needed to talk to Flny about that.
-------------------------------------------------------
Eva
The Dataspace had only one use for Eva, to help in her medical studies. She couldn’t pay much attention to anything else, so medicine would suffice. Also, she was learning how to pilot a spaceship. In any other moment of her life, that would be an exciting thing to do.
She longed for her brother, the love of her life, and tried to fend off her self-loathing by keeping her mind busy. At least she had no chance to be reassigned to a battle she didn’t want be part of, that was comforting. Even though Eva had been dragged to this other secret war, it felt like this was the most meaningful use to her skills. She sensed she was in the right place, maybe she could cope with that.
Despite her weird team up with a centenary man, a geek and an alien without principles, she felt alone. But being in space was kind of cool.
OK, it was really cool.
Except for the food. Tasteless dough, calcium tablets, and water? Bullshit. She needed avocados, chicharrón, and aguardiente ASAP. Not together, but she did miss the tastes of her land. She hoped they can hop back to Earth every now and then to get real food sometime.
Jonas, the new puppy that tries to follow her around, helped her with one thing at least, He’d increased the gravity in her room to double that of Earth. It helped her physical training and to forget Manuel, and was turned off for sleeping cycles.

Date point: 1 week and a day Before Vancouver
Sir Montgomery Lane
His first injection of Cruezzir-Beta, the same initially used by the nine soldiers, was inoculated by Flny early in the waking cycle. No one seems to bother the lack of day or night and how weird time is computed by Dominion Standards.
Eva and Jonas had no idea about the Cruezzir-gamma, the addicting strain used on Sir Lane. The bond between the young couple and Flny already hung on a thin thread, it wouldn't help the situation for the already hated Corti.
He is yet to discard how fun would it be to see Flny being crushed by his own frailty with the help of the ship's gravity control. Perhaps he is not the only considering how the sluggish Corti could actually be useful for the group. The space wonder would eventually wear out, as it the oddity of possessing an alien companion with his spaceship. And what could he do to compensate them for going full Machiavelli on their asses?
Outside his room, Sir Lane spent most of his time in the storage room where the seven other soldiers remained in a different kind of stasis pod. The perfluorocarbons were mixed with the third kind of Cruezzir, Cruezzir-delta, a strain that didn’t affect their gut flora, and they were breathing the fluid filling their lungs with a rich oxygen liquid that should have been helping their brain tissue to regenerate damage that was beyond help in any other way.
"The remaining seven have brain damage that the Cruezzir alone can't treat. Even if I'd used the original drug, the results would probably be the same. To assist them, we would need installations that right now are beyond our reach." Flny said as he entered the room. "I can't guess why this happened. You humans have three brains, the logical one is not healing whatsoever in those seven men. If they wake up, they would be purely instinctive animals without even capacity to remember anything at all. They won't even remember they just ate and would hunt endlessly."
"Nothing you just said is news to me." Sir Lane interrupted, "Mark my words carefully; if you don’t help them somehow anytime soon, I will personally raid your homeworld to find a way to heal them. I will do whatever it takes, I will trample whoever is in my way. Someday you'll see why I think their lives are more important than mine. And you should use that knowledge to make healthier relations with other beings in the future if we don't kill you before you have that chance." Sir Lane stood up and faced the little alien.
"Remember, and remember well, we're not friends. I hate you, and I have reached an age where hate is unimportant and wearying. You made me consume myself in so much wrath, and not for what you did to me, but for assuming that humanity would not help the Corti by just asking. We are more than mere savages attached to our lives. We care. Your fight means something above your pragmatism and fear. You, as a highly intelligent being, should know better."
"Perhaps you're correct. But I can't afford to rely on possibilities. My first evidence of a hidden enemy, one I desired to not reveal ever, is that I have lost one of my offspring. As we're speaking, he's most certainly unwillingly doing the bidding of an unknown enemy.”
"How do you know he is forced to do anything at all?"
"The eugenic development of my DNA is flawed. I have maintained contact with my offspring every step of the way through their indoctrination. This particular one, Flctrd, had been a brilliant anthropologist that bravely was trying to research the hunters. He had disappeared after presenting a piece on his primary findings. Even though he presented compelling evidence that the hunters were using Dominion technology and the Directorate could be able to manipulate their implants, his ideas were shelved. Later, he was sent to a deathworld for research on the fauna. Your world. I have not heard from ever since."
"Let me see if I understand this accurately. Because you were not supposed to be a considerate father, but since you are, you have a feeling that one of your sons was forced to do a job he wouldn't otherwise because he is not keeping contact with you?"
"I’ve told you, my DNA is flawed."

Date point: 3 days Before Vancouver.
Jonas Malva
Each human had their own room with enough space for exercising. Most of the time, they kept themselves except for a daily meeting with Sir Lane and Flny when they try to brainstorm ideas and to discuss things, Eva and Jonas have been looking over the dataspace.
It was the daily meeting time.
“No, I was not searching for ebony porn. I was just thinking.” Dracula can be such an asshole sometimes. A funny asshole, though. He is into something about Jonas and Eva. "Bottlecap over here did a great job filtering that. Thanks a lot, baseboard painter! What I was actually trying to do was to connect the hunters to the war. It doesn't make sense to me. Nevermind the senseless power struggle, there is enough galaxy for everybody! But for the raids to happen where no battleship is? Even the hunters seem to have some intel on this war."
"I should talk about the results of my experimentation on a live Hunter, an alpha no less. He is still in stasis in this very ship." Flny comments.
"Did you capture him?" Eva tossed that question just for the teasing, her poker face was so hard to read.
"Of course not. Actually, it was a human who did it. Take note that the captor was an untrained and malnourished representative of your kind." Every time Flny mentioned an awesome human moment in the galactic history, they looked at each other. Jonas thought this should be a drinking game, alas they had only water.
"As I was saying, I've discovered that the Hunters use the same technology and operating system the Dominion uses in their neural interfaces, which make sense when you consider how they gather their hardware. What is intriguing is they effectively use those as is. No upgrades, no patches in the software. What one of my associates found out was that there is a lot of fuzzy code in the implants, apparently useless, unreadable, it doesn't even appear to be encrypted whatsoever. Suspiciously, it has been known for hundreds of years that if you delete any of this allegedly meaningless code, it promptly makes the OS useless. So, he proposed this very unreadable code is intended to work only in some species. His solution was to rebuild the operational systems from the ground. It took my team 5 years to accomplish that, and you three are the first non-Corti to use it. Actually, only my research team are using this new OS at all on the Corti part, the Directorate is unaware of its existence, yet."
Flny pressed onward. “What warned me against selling my findings to the Directorate was the possibilities here: if there is a code apparently no one in the Dominion can read or even bother to understand, but it can be executed in certain species, who has access to that? Hacking the Directorate databases gave us no fruitful answers."
"You see, that's the problem of your excess of standardizations. Your puzzle is pretty obvious." Jonas always assumed that information technology was a trivial matter that everybody understood.
"No, Pendejo. Can you explain the obvious problem for us non-nerds?" Eva had been a little prickly around Jonas, shutting him down, as often as she could.
"Sorry, sorry. So what I learned from the Dominion software is that they use only two languages, a low-level one, designed to interpret hardware to the OS, and a high-end, that can easily be understood by users. So you use the same Design Patterns, easy to learn, thanks to tutorials and how the high-end language is forcibly limited to allow the user to control the access to the low-level language only to an extent." Jonas paused, gathering ideas to sound as pedagogical as he can be to the laymen.
"Humans have dozens of languages, a handful of logical paradigms, a shit load of Design Patterns for programming mostly focused on specific languages, I can't even begin to argue about operating systems we have. It's a nightmare, really. We use at least five layers of languages between what the hardware talks to and what a user receives in his interface while the aliens use two. So, a very smart cookie on earth at the end of the last century thought that we should build applications once, and run it anywhere.”
“Enter the virtual machine. A Virtual Machine basically knows how to run a certain language that your OS doesn't need to compile. It doesn't need to understand it because the virtual machine does that for the OS. It's basically how the translator works. So that fuzzy code? That could be virtual machines. Maybe VMs in the original operating system have a trigger to activate a virus once you deleted it. A pretty elegant solution, especially considering how you aliens are so fucking complacent. You are not the kind that would go investigate and bypass problems. You'll just have accepted such absurdity for eons."
"Does that information help us in anything?" Sir Lane isn't a computer wiz, but he could sense a big problem with the implications of Virtual Machines that sounded a lot like Trojan horse pathways.
"Well, it means if we learn how those virtual machines work, we can create traps for any applications compiled by it and block them from accessing whatever they want, and maybe find their origin. Hypothetically of course. I have no idea how that third party language works at all. And all tutorials only cover the language used by the Dominion and the Celzi Alliance." Jonas pressed on.
"Seriously, if you have Corti hackers, how come you never used them to fuck with the Celzi intelligence? Get their war plans or logistical pathways? All that shit is online! It sounds like the Directorate is profiting from this war and wants it to keep on as it is."
"Can you steal that information?" Flny was aghast! Was virtual war a possibility? He was already trembling just thinking about letting those three go into bloody war!
Jonas paused, thought about that and smiled.
"Already did that yesterday. Honestly, how you make war is stupid. It’s the kind of shit we stopped doing centuries ago! You're like feudal lords winning lands by killing the greatest number of soldiers, on both sides!" Jonas kept on his runt.
"We avoid killing head on. Well unless you're an African warlord, those sick bastards are relentless. That's why we train soldiers to be like her. Killer with surgical precision." He pointed at Eva. "Or hack servers, and as for last resort, we fuck shit up bombing the hell out of it all. The Pentagon servers, for instance, are attacked on a continuous basis. I mean they even held contests! In our current times, actual wars are waged on the internet first. Like fucking with elections, messing with marketing to control share values, that kind of stuff."
"Is that easy to hack into Celzi Alliance databases?" Sir Lane couldn’t help but be impressed with Jonas' skills.
"As easy as it was to hack the Dominion interspecies databases. Their only advantage against the Alliance is the number of soldiers they can send to the grind. And those killing numbers put us humans and our genocides to shame. Entire world populations, as in plural, were wiped out already."
"Wait, you hacked them too?" Flny's eyes went wide. How could he hack two of the most secure servers after just days of learning how the dataspace and its language work? Could the Cruezzir be acting upon their cognitive abilities as powerfully as it was in their muscle tissues?
"Man, your logical procedures are basically the same we use," Except for those quantum physics ideas sprinkled all over, and the fact they used a hardware computation based on a quaternary system, not binary as humans do. He just doesn't want to go technical with them. "But there is one word you aliens just can't wrap your head around, redundancy. And besides, you choose to kidnap me because I'm that good." Jonas smiled and winked at the Corti. It made him uneasy.
"Marvelous! We have intel on both armies, maybe we can predict their steps. But I think we need to put the hunters as a priority. I believe they are getting the upper hand with this war because no one wants to face them. We need a strong battleship and crew. I don't think we can just weaken them through sabotage. Unfortunately, the remaining seven cannot be joining us, and only we three can do so much."
"Wait, I need to talk about the army’s intel too," Jonas interjected. "Something there really is strange, and possibly is our main clue to a third party in the game we couldn't detect. I've cross-reference three things, the armies’ movements from both Celzy Alliance and the Dominion, and the Hunters’ raids. They don't intersect. I mean, why and how do the hunters almost never meet a battleship? Raid reports showed they only were recorded where there are neither patrols or scouts from warships."
"That is precisely our enemy's work," Flny explained. "The current neural implants, the complacency of all leadership to actually deal with Hunters, the way this war rages on, my people accepting things as is. It's hard to endure all this with each every additional piece of evidence."
"Sir Lane, think about this. I understand why we were abducted, although being asked first would have been nicer." Eva glared Flny, who was shrunk down in his chair as far as possible. "But us three can't face an entire cannibal civilization! And to find a crew? Among the Dominion interspecies? They don't have what it takes to get into a real fight! Their bones are made of sugar glass! Almost literally! To find more soldiers among humans, it will take a time we can’t afford to waste.”
"You are both partially right." Jonas interrupted. "We need more firepower and a strong, reliable army." Jonas stood up and punched the table with a smile. "We need to bring humanity to the fight in all our glory!"
Corti couldn’t have heart attacks, but Flny’s had skipped a few beats. He believed his chest hurt. "Are you out of your core? Why? How?"
Eva and Montgomery looked at each other and started to laugh like madmen!
"You mean to attract the Hunters to Earth, right? Can we do that? I mean, can you do that?" Eva knew that this idea put her and Sir Lane on the bench, but it couldn’t be helped. This approach needed a more subtle hand. Actually, she still struggled with why the almost centenary man was their leader. His purpose evaded her.
"As Flny said, our neural implants apparently don't have virtual machines, so I don't know how those work. But once I got my hands on it, I'll figure something out. I could make they think to travel to Sol System is their idea, like it came from a song playing in the back of their mind. I know I can do that because that's how the neural interface interacts with some procedures, mostly listening procedures I created to protect myself against hacking." Jonas pressed on.
"To answer your questions, my dear proportionally incorrect friend. Since not even one sane species wants to fight the Hunters, and everybody with an implant might be compromised besides us, and those nasty fuckers are in a strong need of some good spanking, AND thinking about how much they already hate us thanks to a handful of psychotic assholes: fuck it. Let the hunters think they can have their revenge. I bet they want to regain their status quo. These cannibals believed they are the apex predators and we have robbed them of that notion."
Jonas mused, "They need a public execution, preferably humans that can pass as warriors."
"Yes, like a Rugby game?" Sir Lane asked.
"Yes! But no. Rugby players are monsters among humans, but the lack of protection, even their public would be in danger and is not in the right country. No, we need a game in a grand stadium, yes, but with a sport where spectators will be in no harms way and the players would need at least some makeshift weapons or some sort of protection. I only know about futebol and martial arts. American football has a big issue: it’s in the wrong country."
"What’s your definition of the right country?" Eva asks.
"I think I can answer that." Sir Lane interjects. "Once the Hunters are utterly defeated by civilian sportsmen, what will remain is their technology. We need a rich and open country, with some level of honesty to share this gift. Therefore, Americans, Russians, Chinese, and Brits, they're the worst choices." Jonas pointed to Sir Lane with one hand and to his own nose with the other.
"And can you actually lure Hunters so precisely as to pinpoint them to a stadium?" Flny still had some doubts, but this idea, as wild as it sounded, could actually be what the galaxy needed. From what Flny seemed to have learned about humanity, there was no other candidate to face both the Hunters and this hidden enemy they knew so little about. Helping humanity from the shadows perhaps could be exactly what the four of them could do.
"There's something I can add in that." Flny stood up to take his chance to be useful. "My research on the alpha revealed that the neural implants are used to simulate a pseudo-hivemind between all Hunters. They seem to share information as basic as what they feel or how they react to determined tasks, to even more complex data like reports on events witnessed. It’s possible that the higher ranks learn from their minions' defeats."
"Which means all Hunters will know about humanity," Jonas added. "Then we'll send that news to the whole Dominion. They'll have to handle this situation somehow. At least to send someone to observe us."
"So, how's the hockey season in Canada?" Eva asked.

What is the importance of social media for soccer tipsters?

What is the importance of social media for soccer tipsters?
Football tipper A claims 1000+ followers on Facebook; tipster B says thousands follow its tweets; tipper C has many YouTube subscribers. Social media is the new battleground of SoccerPunter tipsters competition.
📷
The vast social media offers free play with the liberty to promote businesses free from ranking order. Tipsters feel more comfortable in promoting correct score predictions on social media in a free and fair environment.
Tipsters have their social profiles and they make impressive profiles to attract and impress bettors. Also, they keep their profiles updated with facts, figures and offers. They can star discussions, invite comments and generate quality leads through their social media posts.
The biggest advantage of social media is that it doesn’t require personal websites. Tippers working like freelancers from their homes can promote their services on social networking sites. These are seasoned tippers that work on phone and rely on word-of-mouth for marketing.
Social media profiles are easy to update and they allow communication via pictures, videos and graphs. And no professional help is required to upgrade a social profile but a professional social media marketing manager can make an interesting profile.
Big tipsters spend plenty of money on social media optimization of their sites and small tippers try doing things on their own. But they get equal opportunities of promoting their services.
📷
Those with websites can push their sites up on search ranking with the help of social media. Internet marketing is interconnected. Social media activity has a direct say in search engine marketing.
Those working without sites use their social profiles as their sites and they make a lasting impression on their followers with their posts, comments and video tutorials.
Bettors can also take advantage of social media. They can check the social media profiles of tippers and communicate with tipsters via posts and comments. Also, the punters can give their feedback on social media.
Tipsters are more concerned about their social media reputation because social media is like an open book that anyone can access, read and write on it. Worried about their online reputation, the tipsters take care of their social media posts.
Tipsters want to take maximum advantage of social media and for this reason they have multiple profiles. They remain connected to soccer betting enthusiasts on Facebook and they also give free tips through tweets. Some tipsters even make videos for YouTube promotion.
Bettors can easily find correct score predictions on social media. They can search profiles of tipsters on social networking sites and go through the profiles. And it is an easy job because social media is more responsive than search engines. If you are looking for tips then you should also explore social media.
📷
Like a responsible soccer punter you should display sportsman spirit. You can easily win bets with the help of tips that you can easily find on social media. But you should be alert from the tippers that make tall claims but give nothing in return. You should verify the claims made by tipsters before relying on their words.

How to be a digital nomad

TLDR; I'm a digital nomad who's achieved the 4-Hour Workweek. I've lived across Thailand for the last two years. And in this post I'll share:
And just to be transparent, affiliate links are used in this post. So if that bothers you for whatever reason, navigate to external websites manually.

Being a digital nomad is not a career path, it is a lifestyle.

If you’re looking to become a digital nomad, then surely you already love to travel. What you need to focus on is seeking a job that can be performed from anywhere. You’re most likely to find such a job on the internet.

Location independent jobs

You want a job that can be done from anywhere, and the digital world, like the real one, has many fields of work.
Let me list some potential moneymakers:

My Story

What kind of computer skills did I need?

Since elementary school I was heavy into computers and video games. I was the kind of kid who would come home every day and spend hours at a time on the internet.
But other than a basic programming class in 10th grade and a MS Office class in university, I had no more of a formal tech education than the average kid of modern generations.
In 2008 I graduated with a degree in history. I didn’t exactly choose a moneymaker of a major, or so you’d think, but it would prove useful for a career in freelancing (back to that later).
Like many recent graduates I faced unemployment and the prospect of working minimum wage (which I did for about four years).
For that last year, though, my friend got me a job managing a local store's e-commerce website. In that year I learned the basics of how to operate a CMS (content management system, like WordPress) and of Photoshop.

Time to travel

In those years following graduation I wasn’t happy with the direction in which I was heading.
I needed to break away and go on an adventure.
I decided to go on an adventure across Asia:
A lesson learned as a backpacker
Like countless other backpackers, the trip was an illuminating experience.
It taught me what I wanted in life, but I found myself no closer to knowing how to achieve it. So I came back home and got a job as a waiter.

Lesson 1 in becoming a digital nomad

SECURE A STEADY SOURCE OF INCOME Whether it’s as a waiter or a bartender. Whether it’s a high-paying or minimum wage job, secure a steady source of income.
(More money-talk coming soon.)

Lesson 2 in becoming a digital nomad

CHOOSE A PATH TO LOCATION INDEPENDENCE This means choosing a location independent career that will suit you. Start working on or towards that career in your free time (as soon as possible).

A Recommended path to location independence

Allow me to suggest a route to becoming a location independent digital nomad: FREElancing.
Freelancing has to be one of the most accessible and broadest fields of online work. There are downsides to it like everything, but it’s also one of the quickest ways to make location independent money.
What is freelancing?
Simply a different method of getting hired. Instead of part-time or full-time work, it’s work on a per project basis. Freelancing is bad in terms of relying on consistent pay. And it is good for those opposed to commitment. Potential jobs can be found in all of these fields according to Upwork.

How I earned my way to becoming a digital nomad

Elance, which has become Upwork, was where I began freelancing. In my first week I won a simply job. All I had to do was perform a face swap on some family photos. For less than an hour’s work I made $15 or $25.
The next week I won a $1200 job. An agency in Argentina hired me to build their website.
I did that without even knowing how to code. Nowadays you don’t need to know programming to make a website. I’ll get into that later.
After these two jobs I went on to have a successful freelancing career, going through highs and lows that can be expected with freelancing.

What 3 factors contributed to my success?

I was born in the personal computer and internet generation. This means I’m better with computers than the average member of older generations (a large group that hires freelancers). And it makes it easier for me to learn new computer skills.
Being born in America made me a native English speaker, which provides a big advantage over foreign competitors. And having grown up in America it allowed me to know the type of customer service those hiring me (other Westerners) would expect.
My education was important because it gave me skills people would pay for. Learning history taught me how to write, how to do research and how to be organized. My previously mentioned computer job provided me with an education too. Because of it I’m comfortable with using Photoshop and content management systems (which would be very useful when learning WordPress).

What you should do now.

Go to Upwork.com, browse their job categories and job boards and see where you will fit in.

Become a better you.

Lynda.com is home to amazing tutorials that teach work and computer skills . Seriously, the teachers over there are awesome. The site even has career tracks, which are essentially playlists of tutorials. These career tracks will fulfill the skills needed to work in various positions.
You may actually have free access to Lynda through your university. If not, you can grab a free 10 day trial here. See if it will help you.
Monthly plans start at $25 (I pay $37.50 for premium membership, which comes with exercise files).
I cannot speak highly enough of Lynda.com, but they’re not the only option for learning. YouTube has so many great, free tutorials. And I’ve heard Code Academy is the place to go to learn how to, you guessed it, code.

Lesson 3 in becoming a digital nomad

MONEY By this time in the guide you should already have a steady source of income and the path to location independence. What you need to do now is get your money right.
What to do:
  1. Get health insurance if you don’t have it (my fellow Americans) because medical bills are the number one cause of bankruptcy in America.
  2. Work on eliminating or managing any debt you have.
  3. Build an emergency fund, which you can define as X months of savings in case the world decides to fuck you in the ass. personalfinance is a helpful community.

Lesson 4 in becoming a digital nomad

TRANSITION FROM A CATERPILLAR TO A BEAUTIFUL DIGITAL NOMAD
Before you can become a digital nomad you have to finish getting your money right.
Ask yourself this: Is your location independent work paying enough to sustain a monthly travel budget?
The decision is up to you, but practice patience. I’d suggest waiting to pull the trigger on traveling if going prematurely would put you in a precarious position. And no one wants to find themselves in a precarious position after coming prematurely. (clears throat)
Once you are confident in your finances, start planning your trip or your move. My only tip here would be to make sure you have the ability to work where you go (I’m mainly referring to good Internet).
*Nomadlist is supposedly a useful resource for nomads looking to research destinations.
Other travel sites and resources I recommend are:

CONGRATULATIONS!

By this point you have become a digital nomad.

But we’re not done. Since this is the astabooty method I need to keep on teaching. Keep reading to learn:

How to excel as a freelancer

Let’s make it clear, as a freelancer you are not just a designer, business analyst, writer or what have you. As a freelancer, you are also a business person.
And as a freelancer it can be argued that your most important task is to win jobs.
Once a job is won, your interactions with the customer are as important as the actual work you provide. It can also be argued that the human element of your project is more important in terms of getting repeat customers than the technical elements.
Long story short, put yourselves in the shoes of your (potential) customers and think about how you can serve them well.
TIP: Your success as a freelancer is dependent on your profile and review scores. If you provide a good service/product and good customer service, you will do well (YOU MUST DEMONSTRATE THE QUALITY OF YOUR WORK WITH A PORTFOLIO).

Making more money as a freelancer (part 1)

  1. You’ll be able to make more money as you become more efficient, which will come with experience.
  2. Also with experience, you will come to know what types of jobs and clients pay more.
  3. Knowledge is power. You can make yourself more valuable by: i. Learning how to market yourself better. ii. Learning new technical skills: ----a) For instance, most college students/graduates have the ability to write research papers. This is a skill that translates well to working online (getting hired to write blog articles or other written content). That’s a useful skill, as it can translate to $.10-$.15 / word at minimum. This skill can be built upon and made more valuable by learning the basics of: --------SEO (onsite search engine optimization, in this specific case for writers). --------email marketing. --------press releases. --------sales copy (basically, the text you see in a print or image ad). ----b) With just a couple of weeks of learning (on Lynda or elsewhere), a good writer could become a competent (and more valuable) internet marketer. These people could also make such transformations: --------business and accounting students/graduates. --------software programmers. --------web designers. --------graphic artists. --------video makers. --------sound engineers. --------and I bet many others that I cannot think of.

Where to find work

Upwork.com
Upwork.com has a pretty shitty reputation. Many freelancers believe customers there are cheap and unpleasant to work with. Freelancers also criticize Upwork for taking a large cut out of their earnings. So why do I recommend Upwork?
  1. There is money to be made there because there are good clients. The filtering tool (when browsing through job postings) is your friend. Learned, use it, find good paying jobs. Good luck.
  2. I think of Upwork.com as a lower-level league like as seen in professional soccer. It is a great learning ground where you can develop your skills - skills that translate very well in other arenas. When you’re ready to venture outside of Upwork, you’ll be prepared to actively seek clients online and in the real world.

My story as a freelancer

My first two jobs as a freelancer were a face swap using Photoshop and making a website with WordPress (this I'll teach you soon). Back then I was chasing any job that I was capable of doing. Since the portfolio and a five star review score are so important to getting hired, I would offer extremely discounted prices to potential customers. This is something I did until I had built up a decent portfolio and review score.
By that time I wanted to make more money. I saw that website projects were bringing in more money for me than graphic design ones, so I decided to focus my attention there.
At the time I could already make a visually appealing website using WordPress themes and stock photos, but I still had lots to learn.
On Lynda I took courses on typography (learning how to choose the right fonts and text styling on websites and in graphics), content writing and SEO fundamentals. These were skills that made me a more valuable employee for clients.
What I’m about to say may seem to conflict with what was just said, but bear with me.
Even as my skills continued to improve as a web designer, I felt like I was trying to play catch up against other freelancers, many of which would work for lower prices.
I could have continued on the path I was on, but I decided to pivot and go in a different direction.

How to transition from a freelancer to having your own agency (part 1)

In a moment of self-awareness I realized that however good I was, there were better and cheaper web designers out there. But I still believed I held an advantage over them when it came to winning jobs and providing good customer service.
So what did I do?
I decided to start getting freelancers to work on the projects I had won. My client would pay me X and I would pay a % of that to the freelancer.
That means that after the job was won, I'd act as a project manager.
During this period of my career provided me with many obstacles, beecause it was during this time that I was learning how to act as a manager.
So yes, there were difficulties, but they were worth it. By taking on this new role and acting as an agency, I was allowed to scale my business by being able to take on more work.

Advice on hiring freelancers

To be frank, I’ve learned that I’m not a very good manager. At least not a good micro-manager, which is needed more times than not with the freelancers I’ve hired.
I’ve only had two successful hires, but they were life-changing. The reason these hires worked is because I was lucky enough to hire two very proud and self-sufficient people - the type of people who can take direction and run with it independently.
So with that out of the way I’ll share more of the story and offer some advice.
When I started hiring freelancers, I was only working with two types of professionals: graphic artists and web developers. The professionals I was hiring were South Asians (Pakistanis, Indians and Sri Lankans) hired off of Elance.
NOTE: To hire Indians are not?
India has a somewhat deserved bad reputation with outsourcing. This bad reputation usually comes from issues with communication and customer service standards.
There are a lot of shit Indian freelancers out there. But that’s because there are a lot of Indians . It’s just a numbers thing. On the other end of the spectrum, India has amazing agencies and individuals available for bargain prices. It’s up to you to decide if you want to a) bridge the cultural divide and b) sift through the bulk to find the gold.
TIP: A great, cheap country to hire from.
The Philippines! Native English speakers in many cases and great non-native speakers in other cases. Super affordable prices: 3 to 6 dollars an hour for a well trained professional. Talented and warmhearted people. Onlinejobs.ph is the best Filipino job board I know of.
TIP: Negotiating prices with foreign workers.
The best way I know how to negotiate when hiring is to:
  1. Gain knowledge of prices by shopping around and
  2. Have candidates compete against one another on their prices.
I believe in finding a balance, though. Negotiating prices with a foreigner is a mental battle of sorts:
Will we set the price at my country’s standard, yours or somewhere in between?
I think a fair standard is starting right in the middle and then moving either way within 20 percentage points. This way it is not too extreme in either direction.

How to transition from a freelancer to having your own agency (part 2)

A client hired me to not only build them six new websites, but to write content for them as well. Because it was an important job, I did all the work myself. And luckily, the client proceeded to hire me for a long-term position.
This goes to show the value of writing in the world of freelancing.
The job was to build and maintain a blog – I’d have to produce fresh content every week. The pay was great, but the project ate up much of my time (I was not yet outsourcing any work on this project). Like most digital nomads, I cherish free time, so the work situation wasn’t ideal for me.
Freelance college students
What I did to resolve this issue was post a writing job on the University of Florida job board. The candidates who responded were good writers and really affordable. I hired a handful of them, until one rose to the top and replaced all the others. That writer is Ashley Lombardo, who I have since traveled the world with (this trip is what became the G&L 2016 Summer Tour of Asia - more on that later).
Not only did Ashley take over all writing duties, but in exchange for a raise I trained her to run the site by herself. It was this move that moved me closer to achieving The 4 Hour Workweek.

My story: becoming a digital nomad

I was still living in Florida at the time. And I not traveled “big” in years. As usual, I was looking for bigger and better things for my business. I had a big idea to source top quality, affordable talent from India. This would again allow me to take on more work.
It was time to go on an adventure.
Starting in January of 2015 I spent six weeks in India. Instead of making a number of superficial networking connections, I cultivated a strong business bond with just one individual. While this was not the original plan of the trip, this connection later proved to be another life changer.
During those six weeks, I had been speaking quite frequently on Facebook to a young lady from Thailand. We became very interested in each other over this time. So much so that soon enough I suggested the idea of me flying over to go on a date. She was receptive to the idea and told me to come on over. She and I dated for only a short time, but that is how I moved to Thailand.

Achieving The 4 Hour Workweek

Let’s now jump to the year 2016. By this time in my business career I had committed myself to one client. For $1200 a week I had location independence, consistent work and flexible hours. What I did not have too much of was free time.
As you could guess, that was something I wanted to change.
As an aside, this job was a Facebook moderation position offered by a former client. The the job essentially was for lead follow-up sales (interacting directly with people who commented on my client's Facebook ads). I bring this up only to illustrate a point to you that jobs can evolve organically over time as a freelancer.
Back to the story, the only person I could trust to help with this job was my connect back in India. I offered them the job and a doubling of their salary, which was 25% of my salary.
That was done in mid-2016. Since then I’ve achieved The 4 Hour Workweek. Sitting around would be boring, though, so I’ve been working my ass off on something new.
What have I been doing?
What I’m about to do is give a complete dissection of what I’ve been working on: Graduate & Live, a travel blog that promotes location independence. This will hopefully give you insight into making G&L and launching a business.
But before that, let me catch you up in the story.

Building a business

In late 2015, Ashley was finishing her last year of college. You remember her, right?
(The freelance writer running a website for me). I’ll come back to her in a moment, but first back to me.
I had an idea to create a guide to freelancing.
To be frank, even today I’ll admit I was not an expert freelancer. But what I did have then, as I do now, was the ability to share years of experience in a simple fashion. So I wrote the guide. And with the editing help of Ashley, it became a really useful resource. This was the product creation phase of what is now Graduate & Live.
But who the fuck was I and why would anyone care what I have to say about freelancing?
I’d need to develop a brand.
Years ago there was a TED Talks presentation discussing Apple’s marketing strategy. My mom shared the link with me. The point I took away from the video was this:
Apple would market the feeling their product would give to the customer.
Apple’s ads were artistic, fun and stylish. In their iconic iPod commercials we remember colorful people dancing, white earbuds dangling from their head and good music being supplied by the iPod. What we do not remember is Apple discussing technical specs of the iPod’s hard disk or anything like that. That’s because Apple didn’t discuss that in their ads.
This whole lesson taught me not to be like so many other digital nomads. Most competitors in this niche can’t articulate anything besides the benefit of location independence and how to achieve it.
All they really talk about is work, work, work. And who wants to listen to that? Sure, it can be exciting at first, but it gets boring quickly.
People become digital nomads not because they want to work, but because they want to travel and experience life.
Ashley and I discussed this and created Graduate & Live together. Following her graduation we would go on the G&L 2016 Summer Tour of Asia - experiencing culture throughout India, Thailand and Vietnam.
The goal was to create a travel blog that illustrated the experiences that could be had thanks to location independence, opposed to simply talking about the freedom of working online.
One quick little side note: Before graduating, I helped Ashley secure a job with the client I had her working for. It was a full-time, location independent position. After our trip was over she would go on to work for them.
Back to business… I had already created a product, a brand name and an idea for a website. Next I…
I envisioned who the customer would be for both the freelancing guide and the website.
Reminded by the saying that “if everyone’s your customer, then no one is,” I decided to focus on a niche or two:
  • Backpackers, who would like perpetual travel and
  • College students and graduates in need of work.
By April 2016, I had a product (The Modern Guide to Freelancing) and a brand (Graduate & Live), a website (graduateandlive.com) and an itinerary for travel.
From May to July of 2016, Ashley, my girlfriend (Aom) and I traveled. We had a great time that I highly recommend you read about later (bookmark this link so you can read it later).
Ashley took charge of creating content for the website. And I handled freelance work in order to fund the trip for the three of us (this was just before the Indian connect started working for me).
After two months of travel, Ashley had built an extensive travel journal and had taken a boatload of great pictures. Her journal and photos would go on to be the brand’s centerpiece for launch.
But before launching I’d have to develop the website and create a marketing plan.

How to build a website

I BUILT GRADUATEANDLIVE.COM WITHOUT KNOWING HOW TO CODE Check out the website so you can see what I'm talking about.
It takes skill to make good food, but anyone can cook.
Nowadays the same is true for webpage creation. Knowing how to code provides more freedom in building a website, but I’ve gotten by without knowing how to do it. And so could you.
Why anybody can build a website
Programmers have developed DIY website creators for normal people. Speaking in terms of difficulty, I’d say anyone who can use Microsoft Word can make their own website.
There are actual website creators like Wix, Squarespace and many others. There’s also what I use, premium WordPress themes.
To explain quickly:
WordPress is a website/blogging manager. At a click of a button or three you can add pages, images and all sorts of content to your website. WordPress is not exactly a self-explanatory software, but neither is Microsoft Word. It is, however, easy to get the grasp of, also like Word.
Website developers make WordPress themes, which are essentially website designs that overlay the WordPress software. Premium themes exist that come with a bunch of features, easy control and beautiful, niche specific designs (like for a restaurant, spa, or a gym website). The theme that G&L was built upon cost only $59 (a one-time fee). The theme, called BeTheme, is the best one I’ve ever used.
TIP: Bookmark themeforest.net That site and the whole Envato marketplace (which ThemeForest is a part of) just may change your work life.
As I’ve done and as many others can, you could go ahead and buy a theme, follow the instructions it comes with and make a website. It takes time to get accustomed to, but it’s not that hard.
Now, the above will give you a website, but will it give you a good one?
Let the learning begin because I’m about to drop some knowledge!
  1. Why do you or your client want a website? Every website should have a number one goal, i.e. get people to call the store, to make sales, to promote a video, to campaign for cause, etc. Until this question is answered, a website should not be worked on.
  2. A website needs to talk to the visitor. To say that in a less douchey way, you need to think of the website and its content as a form of communication. ----What is it that you want to say to the visitor? ----What messages should be prioritized? ----Is there an obvious organization that can be used to group these messages together? Think of this as the site map. What would be found in the site’s navigation menu? ----Remember you can communicate with words (text and audio) and visuals (site design, pictures/graphics and videos). ----Think about what you want to say and say what you mean.
  3. Where to find good content. Just like website themes can be bought, so can stock pictures, video and audio. These can help you if you need content for a website.
  4. First impression: the landing screen. Going back to #2, what is the number one message you want to communicate? The very first time someone goes to your website you only have a few seconds to convince them to stay.
  5. Quality control ----Go over your website in waves to find improvements and errors. ----Try getting a second pair of eyes to overlook everything. You can get a free 5-minute video review of your website at peek.usertesting.com. ----You can also check how your website will look on different screen sizes, phones and tablets at quirktools.com/screenfly. And before I get to #6, let me say I respect web designers and you should too. This is an art one could probably spend a lifetime trying to perfect. Needless to say, this guide is only sufficient in giving you the basics of making a good website. Ok, onto the #6.
  6. Arguably the most important of all of these: How in the fuck are you going to get people to visit your website? There’s many ways to procure visitors. There’s SEO, PPC advertising (Google, Facebook, YouTube and so many other places), traditional advertising, social media marketing, PR and countless options I can’t even think of.
What I’m going to do now is break down the Graduate & Live marketing plan to you, step-by-step.
Marketing Strategy Mind-Map
If you’ve actually made it this far, know that we are almost done. For shits and giggles, here’s a photo of what I’m looking at while writing these words. This is a view from my office complex here in Chiang Mai.
Okay let’s begin:

The G&L Marketing Plan

SEO keyword content creation

The goal of SEO is to get your website ranking near #1 on Google for a specific search query (keyword). The point of this is to get not only traffic to your website, but targeted (the right kind of) visitors to your site.
To do this you need to research what people are looking for. You can also learn how many people are making those searches and how easy or difficult it would be to rank for them.
TIP: Moz.com is a great, free resource to learn SEO basics.
What your keyword research essentially does is give you a list of topics to write about. If you write about them and follow basic SEO principles you can improve your chances of getting targeted visitors.
For Graduate & Live I have three keyword lists themed around:
  • “digital nomad”
  • “how to freelance”
  • “college jobs”

Link Building

When a website links to yours, Google treats this as an endorsement. The power of the "link juice" is weighted depending on the power of the site giving it to you (e.g. a link from CNN.com would have more influence than from a barely-visited blog).
Long story short, you want to get (good) links pointing to your website. Here’s my plan:
  • Press releases.
  • Blog outreach.
  • Directory submissions. Online directories exist that organize the websites of the web. You can submit your site to them and if it’s relevant they’ll accept you and link back to your website.
  • Children International (Children.org)
  • Children International is a charity I support and have a pretty good relationship with. Around the world I support nine kids, but in India there’s three that I’ve gotten the chance to meet. Ashley wrote a story about when she, Aom and I met them during The G&L 2016 Summer Tour of Asia. I’m going to reach out to Children International and see if they will link to the story.

Public Relations

I have two public relations goals. The first is simply to get links from websites covering my story. This should help with SEO. The second goal is to get media outlets to cover a story involving Graduate & Live. This will hopefully drive traffic directly to the site.

Press Released

A press release is a way the media receives news from outside sources. The actual press release is a specifically formatted one page document created by individuals or organizations trying to share a story.
Good press releases are distributed through paid services. I’ll be using PRWeb.com and selecting two of their packages: The $159 Standard service and the $369 Premium service.
Why two press releases?
The first and cheaper release will be used for SEO purposes. To take advantage of this opportunity, it’s important to include keywords in the release itself and in its title.
The second release will pitch a story that will hopefully be picked up by major media outlets. In theory this and the first goal could both be accomplished in one release. However, it’s easier for me creatively to separate them. An example story I may pitch is something like this geared towards parents: How a new generation is making a living while traveling the globe.
Beyond news release services, I have four PR strategies to pursue: Hometown news, University newspapers, National Geographic Traveler and Tim Ferris’s podcasts.

Hometown News

Maybe the local magazine, newspapers and new stations will cover a story involving a local person (me). So after grabbing their email addresses from their websites I will just go ahead and pitch them a story directly.

University Newspapers

College students are people I want to connect with. Wikipedia has a nationwide listing of university newspapers. I’ll pitch stories to each and every one of them and see what happens.
TIP: Email marketing. If you’ve just been paying attention, you just learned email marketing (but you should still learn the spam law).
Step 1) Find or create a list of people to target. Step 2) Email them.

National Geographic Traveler

It would be so cool to have a story mine published by Nat Geo. That’s reason enough to want to write for them. If I am lucky enough to write for them, it may also help build my brand. They even have a digital nomad section.
The trip I’m thinking of suggesting to them is “Survival in the jungle: exploring the wilderness with a Thai soldier.”

Tim Ferris's Podcast

Tim Ferris is author of The 4 Hour Workweek. His podcast gets a huge amount of listeners. Since I can be considered a success case of his, maybe he’d be interested in having me on. Via social media I hope to improve my odds, which I’ll talk about later.

Blog Outreach

This is simple, the first step here is the actual blog outreach. I’ll use Google to find blogs related to what I’m doing (travel blogs). Then I’ll check out the sites and sign up for their newsletters. If something interesting pops up, I’ll join in or start a conversation with the blogger. If at some point it feels right I can let them know about my website and hopefully they’d choose to link to it one day.
The second step is to look for and enter blog contests. Hopefully I’ll win and get new viewers and links.
The third and last step would be to join in any relevant forums/message boards. For me that would be digitalnomadsforum.com and nomadforum.io.

Social Media

That brings us to the last step of the marketing plan and the last part of this blog post: social media.
The G&L 2016 Summer Tour of Asia produced a lot of great content. I have an abundance of really nice travel videos, stories and pictures. A good way to make use of these is to share them on the proper social media channels.

Instagram

Branding your account Artistically, my goal is to make a unique and entertaining Instagram account. A$AP Rocky is someone I look to for inspiration here. You can see his account here. See how the row and sections (row groupings) take priority over any individual picture? Stylistically I plan to copy this approach.
Adding quality content I’m so excited to launch the IG profile because it will give me a chance to share some unique content. Using a website called Magisto I’ve created 15 awesome music videos using travel footage.
Sticking to A$AP Rocky’s IG style, I am going to use the videos to tell a story of traveling through Asia. Actually, I've already designed the IG gallery and have enough content to post every day for about three months. It's a really great account I think. Here is the link if you want to follow along.
Getting Followers And lastly, I’ll follow people who liked images of certain hashtags. I’ll be doing this because following people is maybe the best way to get followed yourself.

Imgur

This image sharing site is great for getting images to go viral. In the past I’ve gotten tens of thousands of views from just a handful of galleries and individual images that I have posted.
As part of the G&L marketing strategy, I’ll publish about 100 posts to Imgur. I actually already have a spreadsheet made detailing the post titles and image(s) to use. These aren’t just any old images either; these are the top 3% from over 7000 travel pictures.
In these posts I’ll include a link to my website with a call to action, like “if you want to see more travel stuff then check out my website, graduateandlive.com.” Honestly I don’t know if Imgur users will even click through, but at worst it will be cool to see that hundreds of thousands or millions of people have seen my posts.

Reddit

Reddit is my favorite website and the best place I know of for things to go viral. The most important thing here is to follow Reddiquette and the rules of individual sub-reddits.
What I’ll be doing on Reddit is posting the same content as on Imgur, but without a link to my website and without a call to action, as those are against the rules here. Hopefully other Redditors will take interest and spark up natural conversation of what I’m doing in the comment section. This would then then allow me to share my info with them.
On Reddit it’s key to find sub-reddits that suit you. I’m mainly going to share with travel, digitalnomad, solotravel and pics. Although there are two posts I hope to make on other sub-reddits.
GetMotivated The goal here is to motivate people with a story of mine. This really has nothing to do with G&L, but it would be cool if people get motivated. Plus it may help me get more known on Reddit.
IAmA This is the ask me anything sub-reddit. I hope to post a “IAmA (I am a …) 4 Hour Workweek success story, AMA (ask me anything)”. If it gains some traction, maybe that could help get me onto Tim Ferris’s podcast.
TIP: Stick to social media platforms you’re familiar with. I’ve never been a Twitter person, so even though it’s a large platform I’m going to avoid it.

Youtube

Using clips from the trip, I've created a mini-travel series. Most of the videos are long by Youtube standards. And to be quite frank, it's asking a lot from a first-time viewer to invest more than a few minutes in a video, so to address this I've created trailer that's less than a minute long.

Facebook

Facebook will be the place where people I actually know follow me. Maybe this will prove to be helpful in spreading the content (through likes and shares).
I’ll be treating FB as a social media headquarters for G&L. In order to tell a story (of G&L, the trip to Asia, and working online), some unique content will be created for this platform. Otherwise the FB page will be used to share content created for the website and other social media sites.
Off the actual page, one method of gaining likes is by joining other communities and conversations. So I’ll look out for travel pages and interact with them way makes sense.
That’s a wrap for the marketing plan.
And that’s it for this guide too. I’d obviously love it if you bookmarked Graduate & Live, follow the Instagram account (@GraduateAndLive), like the G&L Facebook page and subscribe to my Youtube channel. Sharing is caring, so if you see something you like, please share it.
If you are interested in freelancing and really want to up your odds at success, I'll be giving away 7 review copies of the Modern Guide to Freelancing. Ask for a review copy in the comments.
