A not-so-brief rundown of the letters N-Q in Jeffrey Epstein's 'Little Black Book'

Below is a rundown of the letters N-Q under Epstein's contacts. Last year, I wrote about letters A-C. You can check that out here (https://www.reddit.com/conspiracy/comments/cpis3n/a_brief_rundown_of_the_first_ten_pages_of_jeffrey/).
I also wrote about letters D-F on July 5, 2020. You can check that out here (https://www.reddit.com/conspiracy/comments/hlrba8/a_notsobrief_rundown_of_letters_df_in_jeffrey/).
I posted letters G-I on July 13, 2020. You can check that out here (https://www.reddit.com/conspiracy/comments/hqko0y/a_notsobrief_rundown_of_letters_gi_in_jeffrey/).
I posted letters J-L on July 15, 2020. You can check that out here (https://www.reddit.com/conspiracy/comments/hrq9bg/a_notsobrief_rundown_of_letters_jl_of_jeffrey/).
I posted letter M on July 20, 2020. You can check that out here (https://www.reddit.com/conspiracy/comments/huw0yt/a_notsobrief_rundown_of_the_letter_m_in_jeffrey/). There are some misspelled names. Epstein entered their names like this.
I have bolded some of the more interesting connections and information, but there could be much more that I overlooked. I hope something here strikes an interest in someone and maybe we can get more investigations out of this. Please, if you know anything more about any of these people than what is presented here, post below. I am working off of the unredacted black book found here: https://www.coreysdigs.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Jeffrey-Epsteins-Little-Black-Book-unredacted.pdf

Oxenberg intends to talk to the FBI about Epstein and Maxwell (https://www.tatler.com/article/christina-oxenberg-speaks-to-fbi-about-ghislaine-maxwell-and-jeffrey-epstein). Marc Yaggi is Executive Director of Waterkeeper Alliance, where Oxenberg was once a writer.
Paini, Nicole: Nicola is a Managing Partner at Rothschild & Co (https://app.mergerlinks.com/people/nicola-paini).

Epstein has 19 entries for Pashcow in his ‘black book’. Here is Pashcow at the Policeman’s Ball, which Trump frequently hosts at Mar-A-Lago (https://westpalmbeach.floridaweekly.com/articles/10th-annual-policemans-ball-mar-a-lago-club-palm-beach/). Pastrana was forced to admit flying on Epstein’s ‘Lolita Express’ after the flight logs were released (https://colombiareports.com/colombias-former-president-on-jeffrey-epsteins-lolita-jet-flight-logbook/). According to this article, Ghislaine Maxwell claims to have flown a Blackhawk helicopter in Colombia and fired a rocket into a terrorist camp (https://observer.com/2002/11/vikram-chatwal-turban-cowboy/). There is no time period for when this supposedly occurred, but it could have happened while Pastrana was president.
Patricof, Alan & Susan: Alan is an investor, venture capitalist, and private equity magnate. Patricof served as the national finance chairman for Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign (https://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/20/us/politics/20donor.html?scp=19&sq=alan%20patricof&st=cse). Alan is also a trusted friend of Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law (https://www.politico.com/story/2017/06/29/jared-kushner-inner-circle-confidants-240116), proving once again that PARTISANSHIP IS BULLSHIT. THEY ARE ALL CONNECTED. Susan is his 2nd wife. Her brother, Craig Hatkoff, appears in Epstein’s contacts under ‘H’. Alan and Susan’s son, Jonathan, is President of Tribeca Enterprises, the company that owns and operates the Tribeca Film Festival. Their other son, Jamie, is a TV and movie producer. President, owner, and founder of Pier 59 Studios, the world’s largest photo studio complex. Federico was once accused of sexual harassment by his former assistant, but he was acquitted (https://nymag.com/intelligence2010/08/photography_studio_head_federi.html). Pignatelli also has his own modeling agency which is headed by Brunella Casella, the woman responsible for launching the career of scumbag Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, and others (https://wwd.com/fashion-news/fashion-scoops/industry-model-management-new-york-office-10505934/).

Pritzker’s name appears twice on Epstein’s flight logs (https://archive.org/stream/EpsteinFlightLogsLolitaExpress/Jeffrey-Epstein-Flight-Logs-in-PDF-format_djvu.txt). Pritzker is listed as one of the people who has knowledge of Maxwell and Epstein’s sexual trafficking conduct and interaction with underage minors (https://www.the-sun.com/news/778758/jeffrey-epstein-enablers-named-sex-trafficking-underage-victims/). Epstein has 12 phone numbers - including an emergency contact number - and two home addresses listed under Pritzker’s name. What’s even creepier is that there is a subtitle under his name that reads “Numero Uno”. Usually when Epstein adds a subtitle under someone’s name, it indicates what company they work for or a relationship of some kind (ex: X’s husband or Y’s friend). The fact that ‘Numero Uno’ is the subtitle under Pritzker’s name is unsettling, to say the least.

ANTM - Where Are They Now? (Cycle 3)

Hi guys! Here are the girls from Cycle 3. If you guys know any of the missing girls’ social media handles, please let me know so I can add it to this post!

Name: Magdalena Rivas Placed: 14th Age: 36/37 (Estimate only; birthday isn’t online) First Call Outs: 0 Bottom 2: 0 (eliminated outside of panel) Twitter Followers: N/A Instagram Followers: 412 (@magdarivas) Magdalena Rivas on IMDB
ANTM CYCLE 3 Joining America’s Next Top Model Cycle 3 did not necessarily put Rivas’ modeling career into high gear as she was the first one eliminated from the 14 finalists. She did get a little taste of what professional models go through everyday when they were flown from New York to Jamaica to do their very first photo shoot. She was eliminated on the spot, the morning after the photo shoot.
POST-TOP MODEL Magdalena has kept a low profile since the show. She’s done some modeling work, but is not currently being represented by an agency. Magdalena has done print work for Vibe Magazine, ELLEGirl, and The Lab Uptown. She currently (according to her facebook) works for Children’s Health, a Nonprofit Organization based in Dallas, Texas. She has 2 beautiful girls, Nyla and Fiona.
Name: Leah Darrow Placed: 13th Age: 36/37 (Estimate only; birthday isn’t online) First Call Outs: 0 Bottom 2: 1 Twitter Followers: 23.7k (@leahdarrow) Instagram Followers: 27.3k (@leah.darrow) Leah Darrow on IMDB
ANTM CYCLE 3 Although it’s clear that Leah possesses the physical attributes of a model, she was the second to be cut on America’s Next Top Model on Cycle 3. Her removal from the show was brought upon by Leah’s plain and unimpressive photo shoot. The photographer remarked that Leah did not make eye contact with the camera and Tyra Banks commented that she did not position herself well in the pictures. After being eliminated, she walked away from the room without bidding the others farewell, but vowed to keep on pursuing her dream to become a professional model.
POST-TOP MODEL After appearing on the show, Leah appeared in FHM Magazine. Since then, she is now an advocate for the Roman Catholic Church and Catholic modeling, doing print work for publications for The St. Louis Review, The Catholic Weekly, Lighthouse Catholic Media, YFE.org, as well as the cover and a spread in Family Foundation Magazine. Some of Leah’s speeches cover topics such as modesty, chastity, the pro-life message (including the death penalty), “catholic” fashion, conversion from sin, and living your life for Christ.
Since the show, Leah has a regular podcast entitled Do Something Beautiful (now on it’s fourth season) where she regularly discusses a variety of topics. She has also come out with her own book, The Other Side of Beauty, based on the lies we are told about our worth being tied to our appearance and instead invites us to look again at the real meaning of beauty. She has also appeared in TV series such as The Journey Home and Beloved. In 2012, she married her boyfriend Ricky, who serves in the US Military. Leah has 3 beautiful children: Agnes (born 2013), Ambrose (born 2015), and Violet (born 2016). In May 2017, Leah graduated with Magna cum Laude honors with her Masters in Theology from the Augustine Institute.

ANTM CYCLE 3 Julie seemed to have a promising start, but during the third photo shoot in America’s Next Top Model, Cycle 3, her performance fell short of being excellent to the judges. Furthermore, at the panel, Julie admitted that the reason why she joined the show was to gain more exposure as a clothes designer rather than a model. The revelation ultimately led to her elimination.
POST-TOP MODEL Julie is another one of those girls has kept a low profile since the show. She doesn’t have a big online foot print, except for her twitter and her instagram. She has done print work for Republic of Brown, and has appeared the Ray Billion Look Book. Sometime after the show, she worked as a North American sales manager for the Thursday Island clothing line. She has also mentored models for The Model Experience. In July 2015 (I think), she married her boyfriend, Bill Clifford, in California.
Name: Kristi Grommet Placed: 11th Age: 31/32 (Estimate only; birthday isn’t online) First Call Outs: 0 Bottom 2: 1 Twitter Followers: N/A Instagram Followers: N/A Kristi Grommet on IMDB
ANTM CYCLE 3 Kristi was memorable for coming into initial auditions wearing her senior prom dress, which was made from an American Flag. The fourth week in America’s Next Top Model, Cycle 3 had the models posing for Lee Jeans ads with hair extensions braided into their hair. Kristi Grommet may have had the looks and the body, but her lack of confidence during the challenge was what made Tyra and her fellow judges cut Kristi from the competition.
POST-TOP MODEL After her stint on America’s Next Top Model, Kristi went on to model for In Touch Magazine, where she portrayed Miranda from the HBO series Sex and the City. She has done some test shots, but hasn’t really pursued modelling. In 2014, she directed a freshman/sophomore production of Arabian Nights. She is not currently represented by an agency. She doesn’t have a big footprint on the internet, since there was very little about her online. In 2006, her boyfriend Gunther proposed to her in Times Square in New York City. She currently has 2 sons and 1 daughter. Aside from that, not much is known about what she’s up to these days.

ANTM CYCLE 3 Her time on America’s Next Top Model, Cycle 3 didn’t last very long as she was the fourth contestant eliminated by the judges. During her short stay in the competition, Jennipher frequently had confrontations with Eva Pigford because of the latter’s attitude. She also did not mix well with Ann Markley, with whom she almost engaged in a fight. Part of the makeover that Jennipher received from the show was a haircut, which she did not enjoy, as she was even seen crying after the hairstylist gave her a shoulder-length hairstyle. The fifth challenge for the season was to pose with roller skates on for a Dooney & Bourke accessories ad. The photos that were taken of her did not impress the judges at all, cutting her journey to the top short.
POST-TOP MODEL Jennipher has done some print work, but is currently not represented by an agency. She had modeled for Magic Power Boats, Sex Symbol Jeans, Hot Boat, and Fiu Fiu. Sometime after the show, Jennipher became the food and beverage director of the SLS Beverly Hills. In 2012, Jennipher was the marketing manager at Andrea's in Las Vegas. On March 2016, Jennipher married Brian Urlacher, a former NFL linebacker. Their wedding was featured on the cover of Sports Entertainment Today. She is a step-mom to 3 children (from Brian’s former relationship): 2 daughters (Pam and Riley) and a son (Kennedy). Aside from this, not much is known regarding what else she does.

ANTM CYCLE 3 Kelle was sent to the bottom two with Ann Markley during the sixth week of America’s Next Top Model, Cycle 3. Although Tyra criticized them both for not bringing their great personalities into their pictures, the judges decided to take out Kelle, believing that she had less potential as a model. After being eliminated, Kelle remarked that she’ll try hard to build her career on her own, but did not seem overly optimistic. During the show, she won one challenge where the girls had to pose as mannequins in a La Perla store window.
POST-TOP MODEL After her appearance on the show, Kelle Jacob was in Source Magazine and had a cover of Eminence Magazine. Kelle has modeled for designers and brands such as College Fashionista. After the show, she attended Hunter College in NYC where she pursued her bachelor’s degree in media (with a minor in english). She has been featured in a series of documentaries about undecided voters in the 2008 presidential democrat primaries for the NY Times. She is currently not represented by an agency. She is currently a member of the Global Marketing and Millennial Innovation Team at Estée Lauder.

ANTM CYCLE 3 On America’s Next Top Model, Cycle 3, it was revealed that Cassie was suffering from bulimia. Tyra offered to give her counseling, but she refused it, choosing to deal with the condition on her own. However, it was not Cassie’s condition that made her the sixth person to be eliminated from the competition. Rather it was the lack of “fierceness” in her photos and her apparent disinterest that drove the judges to send Cassie home.
POST-TOP MODEL Since the show, Cassie has graduated college in Oklahoma and has done some modeling work including a bridal shot. She was married in February of 2009.Not much else is known about Cassie after Top Model. She has no twitter, her instagram is private and most likely unused, and her fan page on facebook hasn’t been updated in years. Luckily, I found her husband’s facebook and it looks like the couple has 2 children, a boy and a girl.

Toccara has modeled for Ashley Stewart, Star Collection, Avon, Torrid, New York and Company, JCPenny, Target, Essence Magazine, Vibe Magazine, Lady Hennessey, Traci Lynn Jewelry, Evans, Qristyl Frazier Designs, The First Impression Collection, Ashley Stewart's Urban Chic Collection Fall 2010, and Smooth Magazine.   Like other ANTM alum, Toccara has ventured into both hosting and acting. She has co-hosted an episode of 106 & Park. She was a correspondent for The Black Carpet and a co-host on the game show Take the Cake, both for the BET network. In 2006, Jones appeared in another reality show for VH1, Celebrity Paranormal Project. In 2008, Jones was a competitor on the second season of the VH1 series Celebrity Fit Club. In 2011, Jones starred in the second season of the reality series The Ultimate Merger. She made an appearance in Trina's music video for the song "I Got a Thang for You".   ANTM CYCLE 3 For the ninth week of America’s Next Top Model Cycle 3, the remaining girls, including Nicole, were flown to Tokyo in order to shoot a Japanese commercial for Campbell’s Soup. Although all the girls had a difficult time, most especially with learning their lines (which were in Japanese), it was Nicole whom the judges felt did not come through the commercial enough, thus making her the eight contestant to be sent home.
POST-TOP MODEL Some time after being eliminated from the show, Nicole decided to relocate to San Clemente, California. Nicole did not pursue modeling; instead, she has pursued acting. However, I haven’t found anything from her (acting or modeling wise). Her instagram, which is her most active social media platform, doesn’t show us much about her. Her feed has a lot of selfies, her dog, and some of her other interests. It seems she has moved back home to North Dakota. A quick LinkedIn search shows that she works as an Assistant Manager for The Buckle Inc. Previous job experiences post-ANTM show that she worked for Victoria’s Secret as a Visual Merchandising Manager and Sears as Assistant Manager - Softlines.

ANTM CYCLE 3 As a finalist on America’s Next Top Model, Cycle 3, Norelle was the only competitor among the fourteen girls who came into the competition with braces on her teeth. Her braces were removed as a part of her makeover for the show. Although her overall performance was impressive, her blunders in the Tokyo photo shoot and her difficulty walking on the runway were what compelled the judges to make Norelle the ninth contestant to be eliminated. Her photo shoot for T-Mobile went well, but was not well enough to keep her on the show for another week. During her stint on ANTM, Norelle won a make-up challenge featured during the show’s third episode.
POST-TOP MODEL Norelle was able to attain considerable success as a model after her appearance on America’s Next Top Model, Cycle 3. She received contracts from NOUS models and Dream Models in Asia, and working with these agencies were beneficial as she was able to book numerous advertisements. She has done print work for Sisters Magazine, Yes! Magazine, Sudden Weekly, and Goat Boutique. Norelle has also appeared on the TV show One on One. However, Norelle eventually decided to leave the fashion industry temporarily in order to pursue her education.
Sometime after the show, Norelle got married to Dave Griffith and now has 2 beautiful kids; 2 sons and a daughter. Not much is know about what happened to her after she left the industry.

ANTM CYCLE 3 Ann came close to making it to the Top 3 of America’s Next Top Model, Cycle 3, but was the tenth contestant eliminated from the show. During her stay in the competition, her athletic build prompted supermodel judge Janice Dickinson to bless her with the nickname, “Ann, The Man.” The judges finally gave in to Ann’s inability to produce strong and impressive photographs after the tenth photo shoot, despite Ann’s consistently strong performances on the runway.
POST-TOP MODEL After her appearance on the show, Ann became highly successful as a model in the fashion industry. Going by the name Annalaina Marks, she was able to get a contract from three divisions of Elite Model Management, one of which is in Milan.

ANTM CYCLE 3 During Cycle 3, the judges were amazed by her photos, especially the un-retouched beauty shot that she took during the third week of the competition. When she went on her go sees in Japan, she was told that she was too old by one of the designers. She participated in the finale along with winner Eva Pigford and Yaya Da Costa, but Amanda was eliminated when she and Eva were in the bottom 2. The judges had a difficult time deciding whom to send home, as all three contestants had strong CoverGirl photos, and all 3 were considered strong contenders, but in the end, it was Amanda. One of the judges, Janice Dickinson, was a dissenting voice on the judging panel, saying, “I love you!” to Swafford when she was eliminated.
POST-TOP MODEL Amanda has appeared on the covers of Felt It! Stitch It! Fabulous! Magazine, Bliss for Bride Magazine, and Access Magazine, and has modeled for Levi’s Jeans, Lacy Little Knits, The Austin Chronicle, Verve Magazine, ELLEmemoir, Shutterbug Magazine, Grove Arcade, Recyclone Designs, Royal Peasantry, Serenity + Scott 2013, The Beading Butterfly, Liz White Designs/Custom Couture, Serenity + Scott Spring 2015 collection, and WEBS. Amanda currently works as an aesthetic/style guru for Royal Peasantry. On the show, she was married but has since separate from the man. She has a son, Eli (who is a current high school freshman), with her previous husband. She is currently in a relationship with a new man. In October 25, she came out on her facebook to say she was drugged the night before, while she was attending one of her husband’s show.

ANTM CYCLE 3 Yaya DaCosta was a contestant on Cycle 3 of America’s Next Top Model, where she came in second to Eva Pigford. On the show, Yaya showed insecurity regarding her skin, as she was still experiencing breakouts past puberty. While on the show, Yaya won 5 straight challenges (The race up the flight of stairs, the Go-Sees, The Red Carpet interview, The Acting challenge, and The Tea Ceremony. On the eigth episode (“The Girl Who Is Panic-Stricken”), the models were asked to choose a hat as part of their judging test. Yaya chose the cowboy hat, which surprised everyone since Yaya was the model who was proud of her african heritage. When asked why she did not choose the African hat, she claimed that she does not want to be a cliché. She claimed that the hat was made of a very artificial, very cheap kente. During the ninth episode (“The Girls Meet Taye Diggs”), during the judging session, the girls were set a test in which they had to read a commercial and eat umeboshi. Yaya chose to spit her umeboshi almost immediately after putting it in her mouth, which the judges said came across as very disrespectful to the client (if this were to happen in the real world).

Transcript of Scholastic's 'An Online Event with K.A. Applegate' from 1997 (part one)

Previous interview List of interviews Part Two Next Interview
In December 1997, KA Applegate spent twelve days answering fan questions on Scholastic Networks. This was towards the beginning of the series, before the ghostwriting started. This line from Applegate helps conceptualize the dating.
I believe the most recent book on shelves right now is number 13. I've written up through #19, plus Megamorphs #2, so I'm about seven books ahead.
(As shown from other answers, she had already outlined up to book 23.)
The questions are generally shown in the order that KAA answered them. Much editing was made for clarity, as ten-year-olds aren't the most fluent writers. Additionally, in an effort to get this to fit in just two posts, lots of questions have been trimmed and a focus was made on KA's responses. This is the first part.
The original can still be found through the wayback machine at the following six links: (1), (2), (3), (4), (5), (6).

An Online Event with K.A. Applegate

Welcome, K. A. Applegate
Scholastic Network was pleased to welcome K. A. Applegate for a special online event December 1-12 1997.
Answer these questions or the red-tail gets it.
What exactly is a Sstram? a Mak? a Dayang? a Hawjabran? an Angochian? In #1, I noticed Jake thought-spoke to Tobias while he was Human. In later books, they say it's impossible. Why? How did the Yeerks get off the Yeerk Homeworld to the Gedd homeworld to infest them? (let's face it.... Slugs don't fly spaceships.) Did you cry when Marco cut his hair?
Why do I get the feeling you're a Marco fan?
Let me answer some of the questions you posed, but if you mess with the red-tail you're looking for trouble. Hawjabrans are another alien race. Not sure about some of those other names you rattled off. Are those in Animorphs books? You have to realize even I can't keep track of every detail as I write.
The little thing where in book #1 Jake can thought-speak when he's not in morph? Well, I could give you some long, convoluted and totally bogus answer, or I could confess the awful truth: I messed up. It happens. There's another huge error I just noticed recently. When you get to MEGAMORPHS 2 you may spot it.
The Gedd thing I did not mess up. Gedd's are native to the Yeerk home world. Some poor Gedd stuck his head in the wrong Yeerk pool and the rest is history. The moral is, don't stick your head in strange pools.
Marco's hair? Here's how that went: my editor called me up and said "is it okay if Marco gets a haircut? We have this really cute cover model with shorter hair . . ." So I said, "okay, Marco gets a haircut."
When does no. 14 come out and what is it called?
What does K.A. stand for?
Well, this will sound stupid, but I don't know the title for #14. Writing a series involves more than just the author. I do the writing, but someone else takes care of the titles and the covers. I get copies of the covers sent to me and then I think "huh, book #24 is called THE CORNDOG? Ooookay."
However, I can tell you what #14 is about. It's a Cassie book. It's more of a comedy than a heavy action story. In it the Animorphs morph horses and discover the most secret of all secrets. And no, I'm not going to tell you what that secret is. You will have to read the book.
As for "K.A." that stands for Katherine Alice.
Will there ever be another new character to the Animorphs?
Do the Andalites ever come to totally save earth from the Yeerks?
Do you, or will you ever start a tour where you tour school libraries and talk about your books? (we would love to have you come to our school in Owensboro, KY)
How many Animorphs books do you plan to write?
Funny you should ask about a new Animorph. I am just starting work on a 3 book story which will involve a new Animorph. But will he be a good Animorph, or an annoying, evil Animorph? Hmmm.
Will the Andalites save the earth? I don't know. I think that would be a great final book in the series, don't you? But I'm not at the final book yet, and I haven't really thought that far ahead.
I am contracted to write up through ANIMORPHS #30, plus a trilogy called the HORK-BAJIR CHRONICLES. I'm trying to figure out the outline for that one right now. I have just today sent in ANIMORPHS #19. It's a kind of heavy Cassie book involving a butterfly morph and a Controller who learns all the Animorph's secrets. I hope people will enjoy it. I'm always nervous when I send off a new book.
I'm not doing school tours at this point, although, thank you for the invitation. I'd love to, but it's either visit schools or keep writing, I don't have time for both.
I am the Media Specialist at the Owensboro 5-6 Center in Owensboro, KY my students love your books. They are always asking if I have the most recent title. I try to keep up to date. I have read most of your books and I enjoy them.
Thanks for the support. It means a lot to me that teachers, librarians and other education professionals seem to like Animorphs. I've been amazed at some of the letters I'm getting from people like yourself.
What can you tell us about the books you've written that have not been published yet?
Also, there are a lot of people that claim to know you, have info on coming books, the titles of them, future morphs, etc. Is any of it true?
I believe the most recent book on shelves right now is number 13. I've written up through #19, plus Megamorphs #2, so I'm about seven books ahead.
I can't tell you about each of them, but I can tell you that in Megamorphs #2 the kids go back to the Cretacious age and morph various dinosaurs. How's that for a teaser? Jake as a T. Rex?
I also see web sites with info about Animorphs. Some of it is true, some not. I gather there was a rumor going around for example that book #11 was the last book. So obviously not all the info is correct.
There are lot of rumors going around, how many of them are true?
[long list of oddly specific rumors]
All incorrect except for Jake morphing a rhino, Rachel a bat and Marco morphing a snake. As for the book titles, your guess is as good as mine. I actually don't know.
But you know, I kinda like the idea of a female Andalite showing up. So who knows? Maybe I will try that out. The Andalites do seem awfully sexist, don't they?
Hi, I would just like to know if you are going to make another one of your books. It would be neat if you made one on a new animorph. Like a frog.
Actually, although I don't have a plan to morph a frog yet, I do have a whole new alien race called the Leerans who look a bit like frogs. How's that?
Will Tobias ever get his human body back?
Will you write more Andalite Cronicles?
Hi. If you read #13 you'll find the somewhat ambiguous answer to the question about Tobias. The answer is yes. And no.
I don't think there will be more Andalite Chronicles, bu there will be Hork-Bajir Chronicles which will probably tell the story of the Andalite Seerow and how the Andalites lost the Hork-Bajir to the Yeerks.
How long have you been writing?
What do you get your ideas from for your books?
I've been writing about 7 years. I used to write mostly young adult romances. You know, lots of kissing and boo-hooing.
The truth is I don't know where I get my ideas. They just sort of pop into my head. Of course in some cases they're ideas I've picked up from books or TV. I wish I knew where ideas come from, I'd go there and get more.
What is your last book you made?
Well, the last book I wrote was Animorphs #19, but it won't be in bookstores for another 6 months or so. It's a Cassie book. It's kind of about the right and wrong of using violence, even in self-defense. Has a big surprise ending. Hope you'll enjoy it.
Who draws the pictures on the front? Or is it you?
Do you like your job?
What's your favorite book,and why?
No, I don't draw the covers, Scholastic hires very talented artists for that. believe me, you don't want to see a cover I'd draw.
My favorite book is probably still #4, the dolphin book. Lots of action, but some more thoughtful stuff, too. I'm also fond of #10. I just liked the idea that dogs are descended from a race of kind, decent aliens.
I love my job. Where else am I going to get to work at home while scarfing fig newtons and wearing sweat pants?
Do you draw the pictures in the books?
What gave you the courage to write books?
Nope, I don't draw the covers. I'm not very good at drawing.
What gave me the courage to write? Interesting question. It didn't take much courage, except for the fact that when you start out you don't know if anyone will publish your books. So it's easy to be a little afraid of being rejected. But you have to just accept that small risk. After all, the worst that can happen is a little criticism.
There are an awful lot of jobs that require a hundred times more courage than mine, and where people may receive less respect, less acclaim and less money than I do. A fireman is courageous. I'm just lucky.
How many more Animorph books are you going to make?
I've agreed to do up through Animorphs #30. I don't know how many more I'll do beyond that. I want to quit before I get boring, before readers start saying "Oh, enough already with the morphing, Katherine."
But whether that'll be book #30 or book #48 or whatever, I don't know.
In one of your books could you have one person morph into a rabbit? (Rabbits are my favorite animals)
You know what would be fun? Have Rachel or Marco morph a rabbit, have Tobias not know it was them and decide to try and make them his lunch. Funny scene, don't you think?
I really love your books, I especially love the Andalite Chronicles 1 and 2. I don't have book 3. What inspired you to become a writer?
Glad you liked the Andalite Chronicles. Boy, are you in for some surprises when you get to book #3. Elfangor . . .Tobias . . . Shhhh. No one tell him.
I didn't become a writer right away. I was a bit of a flake, I'm afraid. I did lots of various jobs first. Then, when I was really, really old, in my 30's, I thought "Gee, maybe I should think about growing up and getting a career." So I started writing.
I like your books so much because I like them.
Some day I will like to be like you. When did you start writing these books?
Sincerely Antonio
Thanks. I don't know about being like me. Be the best version of yourself that you can be, and someday maybe I'll be thinking "Hmmm, I should be like Antonio."
I started writing Animorphs around Thanksgiving about 3 years ago. Of course there's a delay till he books appear in bookstores.
What inspires you to write about animorphs?
I started off thinking "I'd like to write about animals." Then I thought that what would really be fun would be to let readers experience what it's like to be an animal. One thing led to another, and pretty soon there were Andalites and Yeerks involved.
For how long have you been writing books? What made you write books? At what year did you start writing books?
I believe I wrote my first book in 1989, if I recall correctly. It was a Harlequin romance. (Sorry, everyone has some skeletons in their closet) As it happens, it involved a humpback whale, along with the usual manly man and womanly woman.
K.A. you draw so good and the picture you have is nice too. Why can't you make animorphs of dinosaurs? . You write very exciting books. I love your books I am one of your best admirers bye bye.
Sorry, but I don't draw the covers. Thanks for liking the books, though. And guess what? The Animorphs will be morphing dinosaurs in MEGAMORPHS #2.
Do you know R.L. Stine?
I don't know R.L. Stine, although we work for the same publisher, along with Ann Martin and many other writers.
I kind of tend to keep to myself. I don't attend conferences or events where I might happen to meet other authors. I'd enjoy meeting Mr. Stine, no doubt, but he's in New York and I'm in Minnesota.
Where do you get your crazy ideas from?
Most of my good ideas I get from other people. My CRAZY ideas I get all on my own.
I love reading and writing. Do like reading or writing better?
Hmmm, do I prefer reading or writing? Hmmmm.
I guess it depends. Sometimes I find reading boring, other times it really excites me. The same with writing. There are times when I'm writing and I think "Oh, man, I cannot write that scene."
But other times I get so into it that my fingers can't type fast enough, and I sit here in front of my computer and just laugh out loud and pound away on the keyboard. And I think about some reader out there, someone like you, coming along and reading the scene I'm writing, and I imagine the reader saying "Whoa! That is so cool!"
When I have that feeling, at that moment when I think "This is so going to rock that reader," then at times like that writing is the best thing in the world.
Are you to make a movie out of animorphs?
[Missing questions about source of alien names]
So, had a few questions to ask, did you? Let me try and get most of them:
No movies, but yes to a TV show.
How do I make up names of aliens and so on? Sometimes just by playing with letters and sounds till I get something I like. Sometimes I'll take a word I see around me and alter it or reverse it. For example the Andalite word "Nothlit" came about because I happened to see the word "Hilton" through my window. I just kept re-arranging letters till I got "Nothlit."
Sometimes a word is deliberately evocative, meaning that it is supposed to make you think o other words. "Visser" is like that. It sounds a little like "vicious" and a little like "viceroy" and even a little like "viscous."
The word "Yeerk" is kind of a homage to J.R.R. Tolkien. In Lord of the Rings, "Yrch" is the elf word for "Orc", or goblin.
I really enjoy Animorphs. I would like to be an author when I am older. My teachers tell me my poems and short stories are really interesting. How did you come up with Animorphs? I have always enjoyed reading books. In grammar school my teachers had to pry books from my desperately wondering eyes. When I found out I had the talent of writing I was fascinated. I hope my books and poems will be as creative as yours.
I was like you as a kid: nose always in a book. But, unlike you, I had no talent for poetry.
I hope you do become a writer, the world can always use new writers. You'll find it's a pretty good job if you stick with it.
The best way to become a writer later in life is to be a reader now. I'll tell you a kind of tedious but useful trick to help you understand how people write: try copying some passages out of a book. When you write them down yourself, you begin to think about how the original writer wrote them, and why the writer did certain things.
Another, maybe more fun exercise, is to try writing the same scene three different ways. Tell a story about a girl walking into class from her point of view. Then tell the same event from another student's point of view. Then again, from the teacher's point of view. Each time get into the head of the person, imagine what they are feeling, seeing, thinking.
Boring advice, huh? But sometimes you have to live through the boredom to discover the real fun.
Did this job you took of writing books take a lot of studying time?
I don't do a great deal of studying, but I do some. Often I'm sitting at my computer, surrounded by books abouta particular animal. I like having large pictures of the animals I'm having the kids morph. I'll have two giant blow up pictures of flies, for example, so I can remember all the details.
Where did you ever get such an imagination?
I don't know where I got this imagination. Maybe my mom dropped me on my head when I was a baby.
Who is your favorite character?
My favorite character? It depends. I try and give each character something particular that I can enjoy writing. For example, Marco provides a lot of the humor, and I love writing for him.
But each of the characters gives me a way to look at certain issues. For example, Cassie is often the character I use to look at moral questions. Jake is the character I use to think about responsibility and leadership. Tobias is my way to write about loneliness and isolation. Rachel is about courage, but also about the dangers of recklessness.
Sorry to get all pompous on you. In any case, I guess at different times different characters are my favorites.
I was wondering if you were ever planning on changing the season in your books. Are the Animorphs ever going to have summer vacation, or Christmas, or winter? They've been at it months at months it seems, and still have the same summespring weather thing going on.
P.S. You know how Ax is always wondering how humans walk straight without falling...what do you suppose he would think if he saw a figure skater? ;) Even I'm amazed at what they do.
Change the weather, huh? Are you trying to trick me into revealing the Animorph's secret location? What if they're in California? They wouldn't have much in the way of seasons. Or maybe they're in Maine and I'm just deliberately leaving out weather details to misleed everyone.
I'll never tell.
Cool idea for a scene having Ax see figure skating.
Why haven't the kids done a andalite morph?
Is a female andalite going to join the Animorphs?
The kids may well morph an Andalite some day. Just haven't found the need for it yet. No female Andalites are joining the Animorphs, but a female Andalite may star in the Hork-Bajir Chronicles.
What does an Andalite fighter ship look like? Could you put a drawing of one in your next book?
Could Ax morph a Komodo dragon or an iguana next time?
Andalite fighters look kind of like eggs with two engine pods, one on each side, and a tail that arches up and over like an Andalite's tail. This "tail" is the shredder, the main energy beam weapon.
Iguana we've done in book #1, but Konodo Dragon sounds good.
Umm....K.A....Do you even know where the Animorphs live?
I do have a definite area in mind for where the Animorphs live. However I treat the matter with some flexibility. In other words I am using a fairly large area, drawing several features together into a smaller, more usable setting. But yes, I could name a particular state, and a particular area within that state. Just not gonna.
Have you heard of on-line virtual pets?
On The Animorph page, they could have a virtual andalite or Hork.
I'm working on something like that myself.
Cool idea. You should pass that along to the webmaster of the Animorphs website Scholastic runs.
Do you think the Animorphs will ever get rid of Visser Three?
I hope so. But not too soon, or what would we do for a villain?
What was it that made you think of how the andalites looked?
I liked the idea of centaurs—half man, half horse. But I thought they'd need some extra cool stuff: a deadly tail and the stalk eyes.
Will Tobias ever get back his morphing abilities again?
What morph does the other cat remind you of excluding Dick?
Check out #13, Tobias does have his morphing powers back.
I have two cats: Dick (the evil foot-biting cat) and Rabbit. Dick is just a regular-looking kitty. But Rabbit is a Manx, which means she has no tail. When she was little she looked exactly like a rabbit hopping around. Now that she's older and fatter she looks a bit like a black bear.
I'll be as short as possible. 1) Is there any like, slow andalites? 2) Where did you come up with all those aliens names? 3) Do you have a favorite animorph? Who is it? 4) How 'bout a favorite book? 5) Do you have any other talents besides writing? 6) Did Ax have a girlfriend? He mentioned an andalite female in #11 7) Which is your least favorite book? Least favorite character?
1) Sure, I suppose Andalites are like any other species: some brighter than others.
2) I answered that at some length below, but the short answer is I mostly just babble till I like the sound.
3) That changes constantly. I like them all.
4) Number 4 and number 10 and Megamorphs #1.
5) Hmmm. Well, I can play the cello a very, very little.
6) Hey, he probably knew a few girls, sure. A good looking guy like Ax? Why not?
7) #11 is my least favorite so far, and I'm not crazy about #16, either. Not so much because of things that readers might notice as for reasons having to do with writerly stuff.
How did you come up with the idea of the Hork-Bajir?
As usual with me I just don't know where ideas have come from. But I guess the Hork-Bajir were inspired by the Klingons from Star Trek and the Orcs from Tolkien.
What are a few of the new books? I already know up to The Warning. Please reply. I am obsessed with animorphs and I just have to know.
Hi. I can never keep track of the titles, I tend to think in terms of numbers. I've written up through #19, but probably the most exciting upcoming book is Megamorphs #2 in which the kids morph Tyrannosaurus.
Can I be a character in a book. My name is Dorien.
I'd love to but then more and more people would ask and pretty soon the entire book would be nothing but names. It is very flattering that you ask, though.
How many books are you going to make?
At least up to number 30. Is that enough do you think?
Do you like books?
Yes, very much. Do you?
Why don't you put 3 books in one?
Actually, that's just what we did with Andalite Chronicles. It was originally 3 books.
Will Tobias come out of his hawk form in book #13 or in any other issues?
Tobias will recover his ability to morph, including the ability to morph his old human body. But he will remain a hawk.
Will the animorphs find the Time Matrix?
You bet they will. Sooner or later.
Is eslin the yeerk traitor coming back again? Also, are there different kinds of andalites like we have hispanic, caucasian, & albino?
I've meant to use Eslin again and just haven't found the right place.
As for different types of Andalites, I don't know. That's a good question. I guess it comes down to what would constitute a "different" type. They do have differences in terms of their fur color. But it would be a pretty dumb species that would see anything important in something as superficial as fur color.
Why haven't the animorphs thought of morphing ax? In some situations it could be very useful.
The Animorphs are very reluctant to morph any sentient species without permission. It's why Cassie felt kind of dubious about morphing dolphins and whales. Where do you draw the line between "just an animal" and "sentient". You're right, though, it could be very useful. For example as a way to convince Visser Three that they are indeed just a band of Andalites.
Some day, if Ax gives his permission, they may morph him.
I was wondering if you had a specific host in mind for Visser two, if the answer is in one of the books, I apologize, but I'm kind of curious. Do you? If so, what?
Visser Two is Marco's mom. Didn't you read #5? Shame on you!
Now, the role of Visser One is still open. Haven't thought much yet about the top Visser yet.
Of course I read book five, and I thought Marco's mom was Visser One...?
See, this is why I should have my coffee before I try and communicate. My previous answer was totally wrong. Sorry. I was confused. Visser Two, Visser One, Visser Three, I cannot keep up with the details of my own books.
It says that it was Visser One. It is Visser One.
I am terribly sorry, you are right. All I can say is that I didn't have my coffee, I was dopey, and I've been toying with this idea of giving Visser Three a promotion, making him number one and dropping Marco's mom down the list so she'd be subordinate to the current Visser Three. Then we'd have the question of whether Marco's mom would be so dissatisfied she'd turn against the Yeerks. But all that is speculative, and way down the line. You have to realize it's kind of hard for me to keep straight what books are out there, which I've written, which I've planned, and which ideas are just ideas. The net result was I babbled.
I was wondering if you could make a Animorphs book with a King Cobra? If you can please do.
It so happens that in book #20, Marco will moph a cobra. Cool?
In the Andalite Chronicles, the Ellimist saidthat he played "a dark game" with someone even older than the Ellimists. Have any idea who that is? Hey, wait a minute... Is this another "seed"?
Could there ever be more humans who fight the Yeerks? Like...another Andalite gave them the power to morph or something and, like Elfangor, never lived to tell about it? Maybe even in the Animorphs own town?
How far in advance do you plan your books? Like, book #14 is just going up on the web site, but you're already planning the plot for book....18? 20? 30?
Will Marco ever get a girlfriend? I mean...jeez. He thinks he's so cute and a total girl-magnet, but he's the only one in the group who doesn't like (And I mean Like) anyone. Maybe if he got a girlfriend his ego wouldn't be so big.
Are there anymore Yeerk traitors that the Animorphs will meet besides Eslin?
Why don't you write an Andalite-English dictionary or something as a little side edition to your books? You could publish a new edition every six books or so. Or not even publish it. Just put it on the web site for anyone who wants it to print out? I think that would be cool. And another thing for the website. A monthly Animorphs trivia thing where you could send in the answers through E-mail or get automatically scored. The winners each month could be posted...and maybe get some sort of prize. The same with stories. Fans could write original Animorph stories and send them in, and the winners get something. Like the contest, only it's around all year.
The force the Ellimist fights is the seed from Book#6: the big red eye Jake sees as the Yeerk in his head is dying. No name, yet. But this creature has taken notice of the Animorphs.
I don't know about additional groups of Animorphs. Only these Animorphs send me their stories.
I have started planning my books a little more in advance lately since I was driving my editor crazy procrastinating. I've written up through #19, and planned up through #25. Although, when I say "planned" it's usually something pretty sketchy.
You want Marco's phone number? Is that what you're saying?
In number #19 Cassie will have a very interesting encounter with a very interesting Yeerk. And in #16 Jake and the gang will meet a Yeerk who . . . well, can't say more without giving it away.
Those are all good ideas, but I know zip about computers. And as for a dictionary that would require some heavy thinking on my part.
I'd like to give you my webpage address, but first a few questions: 1) How is Hork-Bajir pronounced? Is it Hork-Bajir with the "i" pronounced as a "u"? 2) I know the Animorphs are about my age (12), but are they 12 or 13, because In some books I get the feeling they're 12, and in others 13. 3) Is the new Animorph going to be a boy or girl? 4) I was wondering... what are 17-19? called? 5) And what do they morph on the cover?
1) Buh-JEER.
2) Ain't telling. Could be 12, could be 13, 14 or 15.
3) Boy. But don't jump the gun on assuming we'll end up with a group of seven
4) I never keep track of titles because I don't make up the titles.
5) I think on 17 it's Rachel morphing a bat, on 18 it should be Ax morphing a mosquito, and 19 will be Cassie as a butterfly.
I will certainly check out your web page, and thanks so much for having it.
Is there going to be an animorphs TV show on nick?
Yep. Next fall.
Ummmm....uhhh....oh dear....What am I supposed to do in the face of brilliance?! of holiness!? K.A. YOU RULE!!! (immediately throws herself onto the floor and begins to worship frantically.) (bow, bow, bow, pray, pray, pray.) Oh holy one, may I ask a few hundred questions from you? (yeah, yeah, i know. cut down on the caffeine and chocolate.) I read "The Hobbit" a few months ago, and then I read #8 immediately afterwards. Is there any connection between the Middle-Earth town of Esgaroth and Ax's middle name, Esgarrouth? Hmmm....
[Long discourse about an Animorph-inspired RPG]
Okay. And also, do you check out much phan phiction? Because on Hillary's Anipage there is some pretty good fiction! Animorphiles, too. (incidentally, I wrote the Tarranda-Asylle-Ishnatar story on Anipage. If ya go there, check out SkeetNa's stories, Andalite Vigilates, too.)
I am also gonna try to persuade you to make a female andalite. Please? Pretty please? With a cherry on top? And fudge? Caramel? ALMONDS!?!?? Huh? Huh? Huh? If you did, would it be, like, related to Ax, or maybe be his girlfriend or something? Pleeeeeeeease? Female andalites are cool, too!! There aren't enough female Animorphs!! PleasepleasepleasepleasepleasePPPLLLEEEAAASSSEEE!?!?!?
And what do you think of the andalite name Tarranda-Asylle-Ishnatar? (female, of course. My andalitechick character.)
Have you ever read: Watership Down by Richard Adams? Diadem series by John Peel? Anything by Marguerite Henry, Walter Farley, or Jean Craighead George? What about Madeliene L'Engle?
Hmmm, holiness, huh? Brilliance, okay. Holiness? I don't know about that. Once had an editor (not at Scholastic, where all editors are perfect) tell me I seemed sweet but then would suddenly turn into a barracuda. Hey! Maybe that's where I got the idea for Animorphs.
You have a tremendous imagination. Perhaps better than mine. Maybe you should think about writing as a career. You get to work at home, wear sweat pants and you never have to even meet your boss.
Did I take Esgarrouth from Tolkien? I don't know, maybe unconsciously. I did consciously take the name "Yeerk" from Tolkien. The elvish word for "Orc" is "Yrch." That was a deliberate curtsey in the direction of Tolkien. I have read shockingly little sci fi or fantasy, but I have read Lord of the Rings.
I have just sent in an outline for Hork-Bajir Chronicles that features a female Andalite. But for other reasons I'm not thrilled with the outline, so things could change. One way or the other, though, we will eventually meet a female Andalite. The Andalites are awfully sexist, I'm afraid.
I am just beginning to check out fan web pages. I'm compiling a list and I keep promising to do it then get distracted.
I've read most of the authors you list with the exception of Mr. Peel and Ms. L'Engle. Just haven't gone there yet.
Who is your favorite character?
Well, that changes. It's not just that I like whoever I happen to be writing about at that moment. It's more like sometimes the characters get on my nerves for one reason or another. Lately Jake has been getting on my nerves because I haven't felt I did a very good job with the two most recent Jake books. So I blame him. If my next Jake book is really good I'll love Jake again.
I haven't been "mad" at Marco yet, but each of the others has caused me trouble at one time or another.
Suppose another, but similar race of andalites, evolved on one of their moons? I thought about one with ivory hooves, rainbow skin, golden hair.
Sure, why not? The current Andalites are a little weird-looking, aren't they?
Do Horks bear their young live, or lay eggs, or split in two,or.....
What is the average IQ for a normal Hork?
I grab ideas wherever I can get them. I just sent in my Hork-Bajir Chronicles outline and it contains two ideas I heard here: a female Andalite, and the idea that some Horks might be designated "thinkers."
I'd guess Hork-Bajir would be a bit less bright than the average human, but a little brighter than the average chimpanzee.
[Missing question about why Ax didn't kill Alloran in book #8
Alloran had been bitten by a snake—Ax in morph. The venom was in his body and the only people able to save him in time were the approaching Yeerks. Sure, Ax could have destroyed Alloran but Ax, like humans, reveres life and doesn't do things like that.
Will the Animorphs ever Morph something from different planets? If they could all get one of Visser 3's Morphs they could destroy him. Does Ax have a dog?
In Animorphs #18, an Ax book, the kids will morph an alien species called "Leerans."
Ax does not have a dog. He may well have fleas, though.
Bach? Mozart? Or just NIN? Hey, in book #8 when Ax said that all human music is terrible, did he mean ALL music? I mean, has he heard all of our music? Or just like, Nine Inch Nails? :/ Has he ever heard flute music? Even if he did think it was awful, I'll bet he would think it was interesting, for obvious reasons.
Maybe Ax is just not a music lover. In Andalite Chronicles Elfangor heard some human music and sort of got used to it. But as a rule I guess Andalites just don't share our musical tastes.
Why don't the Animorphs go to New York, sneak onto David Letterman as ants and morph out on the middle of the stage and tell the world about the yeerks? They will have to listen and they will win.
Is zone 91 like Area 51?
Is the president infested?
Sneak onto Letterman? Sorry, but Dave's show is taped at 5pm and broadcast later. There would be plenty of time for Yeek forces to destroy the tape. Now, I'm pretty sure Dave isn't a Controller. But what about Paul Shaffer? What about Inky the cue card guy?
As for the president, I don't know. You gotta think a Yeerk would do a better job of avoiding scandals. I suspect the president is pure human. On the other hand, I'm confident that Newt Gingrich and Al Gore are both Controllers. And Senator Pat Moynihan is some kind of alien, I just don't know what.
Zone 91 like Area 51? Hmmm. There is a certain resemblance, eh?
What species did Visser One have for hosts before Marco's mom? I think in order to be the most powerful visser, Visser One must start somewhere down the Yeerks empire too, just like Visser Three. It's o.k. if you don't know. I am just curious. Thank you for your time.
My sense is that Yeerks work their way up. They start as Gedds. Then they go either toward Taxxons or Hork-Bajir. The more technical, science-oriented Yeerks would probably go Taxxon, while strictly military types would gravitate to the Hork-Bajir. Since humans are a new species of hosts they'd most likely be given to Yeerks of high rank or high intelligence.
If andalites eat through their feet, what if they accidently drink a can of beer? Will they get drunk?
Hey, beer cans are the least of Ax's problems. What about sand? What about worms?
Are you going to make a 'Ellimist Chronicles'?
Who do the Ellimists play a 'dark game' with? (Andalite Chronicles)
You said that you might stop writing the series. If you do, are you going to end it with some sort of a conclusion book or just leave us fans hanging?
Will the Animorphs ever get a new character and/or see the Chee again?
Do you think you should give away major parts of your books to people who haven't read them. (I have them all, 1-13,Megamorphs,A.C.)
It's difficult to see how I could ever do an Ellimist Chronicles. The Ellimists have almost nothing in common with normal humans. They exist on a plane I'd be hard put to describe.
I haven't gotten around to deciding much about the Ellimist's mysterious adversaries. I don't always work things out far in advance. I like to make stuff up as I go along.
If and when I wrap up the Animorphs I will do a concluding book.
Erek the Chee is a sort of "featured player" as they say in TV: like Newman on Seinfeld. He shows up every now and then. In book #20 we will get a new Animorph. At least . . . well, I'd better not tell you any more, which, I think, answers your final question.
I was wondering what new morphs everyone will get from #14-25
Let's see, the ones I know for sure are hammerhead shark, cobra, mosquito, Leeran (an alien species), Tyrannosaurus and Deinonychus, butterfly and rhinoceros.
Our planet is called Earth but no one ever tells me the name of the planet the andalite, taxxons, yeerks and hork bajir live in the just say home world. Are these right?: Andalasia, Yeerkon, Hork-Bajirotopia, Taxxonia If not please tell me.
Please answer these 3 questions:
In number #18 when ax gets reunited with his people will the animorphs be honored by the andalites or disgraced?
I heard about some kids who got posters with the covers of #14,15,16,17 but I don't know how to get those posters, If you can't answer right now please find out and e-mail me at: [email protected]
How do you tell an andalite girl from an andalite boy?
Anyway you are the best author that ever lived since the Precambrian era. I love your books times a quintillion times a quintillion.
"I give your books 1,000,000 times a quintillion thumbs up"
It's an interesting point about planet names. Basically, "earth" is just a word that means "this planet". It was originated back when people thought this was the only planet. Other species would likely also have gone through periods when they thought their planet was the only one. So they'd have named their own planets "earth" or some equivalent.
I've always thought it was strange on Star Trek when species say they are from Belarus Four or whatever. Like they knew from the start that there were Belarus' one through three.
But then lots of things about Star Trek seem odd to me: a million species and apparently the only major differences between them are the bridges of their noses and their ears. Not to mention the fact they all speak English.
I like your planet names. Maybe I'll use one of them at some point, if you don't mind.
Okay, the questions: 1) Neither. You'll have to read it to learn more. 2) I don't know where they get those. Sorry. 3) I haven't totally decided. I'm working on that very issue right now.
Thanks for all the thumbs. Sorry I don't have more answers.

Questions Answers
I'm involved in horse welfare and rescue in the USA. Here, owners and trainers rarely make provisions for horses that fail to race well or horses that can no longer race. They are commonly shipped to slaughter in Canada. Is it any different in the UK? Here in the USA, horses are raced as 2 and 3 year olds, despite the fact that no horse is skeletally mature before age 5 or 6. (For perspective for non horse people, a 2 year old horse would be about 13 human years old.) Is it the same in the UK? In the last ten to twenty years there has been an increased push to rehome and retrain as many horses as we as a sport can. I personally try to rehome every horse that leaves the yard to a good home, provided the owner is willing and doesn't want to keep it themselves. I wouldn't say that selling horses, particularly race horses, for slaughter is common practise here. I haven't encountered any instances personally. Horses are frequently run aged two or three in this country as well however I think it's wise to mention that while they do work hard it is not in our or the horses interest to overwork or break them down. In our yard if a young horse is showing signs of struggling we will ease off and give them time.
But, don't a majority of your horses run on turf (compared to US dirt tracks). We don't use dirt at all here. There are a few all weather tracks for flat meetings but most racing is done on turf.
, aren't pain medications more restricted in the UK circuits, so you really can't run a horse into the ground in the same way as US trainers can. Drugs are extremely restricted here, even a whiff of it and they will come down hard. Especially after the last couple of years.
Does the horse have any idea that he is going round and round? Oh yeah. They are clever bastards. You can often tell when it's time to retire a horse from racing because instead of carrying on the race when they get round the course and near to the stables they will try and pull up.
Where do they get jockeys from? Is it genetic? Do they have funny voices from getting their nads squished on the saddle every race? From Ireland generally! A lot do come from a long line of jockeys or racing families in general.
Well other than being Irish I guess the funny voice could come from the pounding their bollocks take...
What is a good resource to learn about racing in the UK if I wanted to attend as a tourist? This website is run by the governing body of racing and has lots of good information on racecourse and fixtures.
Once you have decided on where you want to go I suggest visiting some of the individual racecourses website as they are much more detailed. If you are visiting London during summer I do suggest going to Windsor they do fantastic evening racing, generally on a Monday night where you can get to the racecourse on a boat that comes up the River Thames. Cool huh?
Is racing there seasonal or year-round? Horse racing as a sport happens all year round however some elements of it are indeed seasonal.
For example Flat racing is predominately held over Summer, this is because these horses are generally smaller and appreciate 'faster' (read harder) ground.
During Winter we get most of the National Hunt meetings. National Hunt is the full name for jumps racing. Generally speaking horses are larger and as such need softer ground to prevent injuries and slow them down.
I've never been to a horse racing track and what are some of the reasons for me to want to go? Have you ever felt like the horses weren't being treated fairly on or off the track? Final question is have you ever witnessed anybody on the track gamble to much that you started to feel it was running their life? Sorry about all the questions! Horse racing is a fun and enjoyable pastime. It's great to get a lot of people together and go and have a few drinks and a couple of bets on horses, it really is exciting when there is money on it. It's a good fun day out and provided you budget like any other day out, it doesn't have to be really expensive either.
Welfare is a tough question to answer briefly but I will give it a shot and if their is more interest I can write up a larger response. I personally feel that the majority of trainers provide a very high level of welfare for their horses. We really do love the animals regardless of what people may say. Racehorses get treated especially well, better than most horses kept just for riding I would argue. We are incredibly strictly regulated on animal welfare issues and the punishments are severe for the very few people who do break the rules.
I personally am not a huge gambler, I have a little flutter every now and then but for the most part It don't gamble. I have not ever seen someone ruin their lives through betting but that's not to say it doesn't happen I'm sure.
If the horses are treated well, why are they whipped to make them run faster at the end of the race? It's to make them go faster, it causes the horse no damage and Jockeys are carefully regulated. Limits are set in place for how much a whip can be used and bans and fines for excessive use are common.
Horses are big animals and the whip is primarily a correctional tool, they are trained to respond to it and it's used to keep them under control. Most schools of equestrianism use the whip in some form.
Last year, there were some interesting articles in the press about how horse racing was a dying sport (for example, here and here). How does it look from your perspective? Horse racing is the second most attended sport in the UK, we also hold something like 6 of the highest 10 sporting fixtures in the UK each year. However the average age of the racegoer is getting higher and higher, at a higher level than I there must be a push to encourage a younger audience to attend racing. Racing in this country is coming under attack from decreasing in funding by the betting industry. Every year we receive less money to go towards prize money and such due to an archiac system called the Levy which is supposed to provided the sport with a proportion of bookmakers profits. Improvements look to be being made in this are as the Government, I believe, is pushing to regulate the betting industry differently allowing online betting in particular to be properly taxed and the money collected. It's tough for trainers right now. There aren't as many trainers around than there were in 2007. The recession hit us hard as unsurprisingly the first cost most people shed was a racehorse in training. Ultimately though the situation does start to look like its improving, people are buying horses again and yards are starting to be a bit larger each year. The next one to look out for is China. Racing is becoming very popular there and gambling isn't even legal on mainland china. If China liberalises at the rate it has been it may only be a few years before they regulate the betting industry and everything really kicks off.
Thank you so much for the reply! If you have a minute, I have another question or two... How often do horses race internationally, such as coming from the UK to race in the US or vice-versa? What about going to the Middle East? Also, are there many horses from South America in the UK racing circuit? Our top flight horses travel all over the world to contest titles. This is called "raiding" and foreigners come to England to do it too! The Breeders Cup is something every trainer wants to win. As for the Middle East the main draw is the money. It is insane. Next Saturday is the Dubai World Cup held at Meydan. They built this huge racing complex way out in the desert and hold loads of expensive racing at night to avoid the heat. Pretty surreal compared to here. I don't know of any South American horses running under rules and I'm not certain why they wouldn't. I suppose they don't have any good enough to warrant the expense of travelling over.
I was curious about the South American horses because a few years back there seemed to be a bunch of them on the American circuit from Argentina (that American owners had purchased). I think it had to do with the dollar being so strong and the economy in Argentina being so bad. Ahh. I think they race on dirt over in Argentina so they would be better suited for American racing.
Where are the races held? What are the most popular meets? Is "meets" the right word? Racing is held all over the UK Some of the most popular meetings are Royal Ascot, the Derby Meeting at Epsom and Glorious Goodwood on the Flat. Thousands of people attend these three or four day long meetings every year and it's really quite a sight!
Over the Jumps the most popular are the Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National meeting at Aintree in Liverpool. The Cheltenham Festival is a personal favourite of mine as the atmosphere is truly electric, around 60,000 people attend each day.
Edit: Whoops! Yes meets is a fine phrase. More commonly people will say meetings, fixtures or races.
Thanks so much for your time, and I wish you the best of luck in the future! Your father sounds like a proper horseman. Id like to think I can spot a good one but not nearly as well as my father or my grandfather. It's a skill we all pick up the more we watch.
What's your favorite track? Have you had a few of your horses run in the US? I know whenever I see a steeplechase race in the program, the overwhelming majority of horses in the race are from Great Britain. My favourite to go to as a racegoer would have to be Newbury. The facilities are amazing and the racing is generally of a really high quality both on the flat and over the jumps. Professionally in recent years we have had some success at Plumpton down on the South Coast near Brighton, it's a nice little country course.
Not for my yard no sadly but I would love to come over for some of your racing. Some of my extended family take a few horses out there every now and then. It's every trainers dream to raid a Breeders Cup!
When it's clear your horse stands no chance, how much do you lay the horse on betfair? Call me a man of integrity but I don't at all. Maybe that's because it's been so long since I had a favourite...
Who makes the best sausages in Newmarket? Dunno mate. I'm all about the lasagne.
Roughly what percentage of races are still fixed? I have no idea to be honest. It's probably very very low, it's a hard thing to pull off and the punishments are very strict. Life long bans and potential criminal prosecution.
A few do attempt it of course, a big ring got taken down a few years ago. It's a shame that this is an issue that press fixate upon really as on a day to day basis you don't even think about it within the Industry.
Would it be advantageous for a midget to be a jockey? Not at all! Jockey's are professional sportsmen in a job where if you can't make the weight you can't ride. Some jockey's have to be very light while others can afford to be heavier, it depends on their role as every horse generally requires a different weight based on their handicap rating (A whole other kettle of fish).
Jockeys not only have to be light but have to be incredibly fit and strong. It's really hard work to ride a horse in that style for possibly four miles. Most jockey's I know aren't just good jockeys they are athletes who are proficient at most sports. They really seem to love golf.
If I could go back in time I would love to have gone the career path of a jockey... their commitment to the sport is fantastic and they really put their bodies on the line. Complete Commitment
I just hope some people understand the distances these jockeys travel just to do the job, they will do 2 meetings a day where possible, day in - day out. The physical exertion must be intense only to wake up and do it all over again. It's important to note that during the day most of them work for a trainer as well. They will ride out maybe three or four lots in the morning before going racing sometimes.
Do you gamble? Do you often get tips and are they reliable? Not often, I do for fun every now and then and always over the Cheltenham Festival.
Sadly not often but sometimes a good tip comes along. Often I'm too sceptical to believe it.
Thanks for doing this! I'm a big fan of horse racing and was wondering, what should I be looking at when placing my bet on a certain horse?. Days off? Avg class ? High speed? Etc. in other words , what is the most important stat? Form is the big one. Form over a comparable distance with comparable ground conditions. You can start to make educated guesses each way after that if you start to take in other variables like equipment etc.
The going has a massive impact from my experience, if the horse doesn't run well on a certain ground its a no-no. I couldn't agree more, going is vitally important however generally speaking when we run a horse on different ground than normal we are hoping it will overcome it.
When they state in the paper that they are wearing headgear or blinkers etc. do you think this can make a significant difference? Headgear is a really useful tool, sometimes they go really well. Other times it has no effect. Sometimes the effects deteriorate over time. Generally if one of mine is wearing head gear for the first time it means we have worked it at home and it's worked really well.
What was the most expensive batch of horse seed you know of being sold? By horse seed do you mean semen? If so in the Thoroughbred Bloodstock Industry Artificial Insemination is banned. Only natural coverings are permitted. Race horses are still crazy expensive though. People can spend millions of pounds on one horse.
What's your most gruesome story? i've heard some pretty horrific stuff from botched castrations/surgeries on horses. As for most gruesome I don't have any really awful ones about horses. We have had some nasty falls and one went through a barbed wire fence once but nothing truly disgusting. Likewise never seen any botched geldings or surgeries. But they do happen, I like to think the vet we use is pretty good so I hope it won't happen anytime soon!
Only live coverage is allowed? Fascinating. Why is that the case? So I take it that there is a limited amount of bloodlines unless you actually ship the horse out of country/continent? A few reasons.
One, limits the number of stock from a single stallion. AI decreases the cost of covering so semen would be more readily available. You would end up with thousands of foal in the same year by the same sire. Thats a quick way to fuck up your bloodlines.
Two, why would they change to it? Now all the selling power is held by those who it would affect most. The studs which own the stallions make millions of pounds a year in coverings, if they saturate (literally in this case) the market they will make loses.
Three, racing is an international sport, if one country did it and no one followed suit very quickly they would find themselves isolated with a horse population that couldn't compete abroad.
What is your favorite color? Blue. I like Blue...
That is the correct answer, OP. Now you must answer one more question to cross the bridge. What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow? African or European?
European. Ffffuuu...
Ohh boy. I've been wanting to ask so many questions about your industry but wasnt quite sure what sub to go to. Thanks for doing this ama.A bunch of questions here. Hope you can clear things up for me. How do trainers even make money. Sometimes the odds of a horse winning are upwards of 20/1 when the prize money is usually around 10k-20k(?). factor in the logistical, training and acquiring costs and seems like a losers game to train a horse (?) Hey man! Hope I can help. Trainers charge the owners of horses a training fee. This is generally a daily charge plus extras . Sometimes it's very hard to make money as a trainer, a lot of people don't turn a profit training racehorses many just do it for the fun and the lifestyle.
How do you even judge how fast a horse will be when you go to three auction? Generally breeding, if the mare and stallion are good the horse has a better chance of being good. Ideally you compare the horse to a full sibling however this is rare and you generally end up comparing them to half brothesister on the maternal side.
The Grand National seems like an absolutely absurd event to me. Would you say it enjoys broad support among the racing community? I think it's a truly impressive spectacle that is the hardest test we throw at our toughest horse and jockey teams. I don't feel it's representative of the day to day life in the racing world however.
I worked at the grand national once. a G4S man tried to crush me in a bin. Consequentially I don't trust anyone associated with your profession. Sorry about that. Aww come on. G4S as in the men being done for manslaughter? Trust me when I say we hate those hired security at the big meetings more than you do. We normally know the guy on the gate because it's been the same one for maybe twenty years. However at the big meetings they roll out extra staff and they get lost in the crowd somewhere...
How much pressure is there for the horses to get results? If you had a severe patch of not winning many races does this affect the finances of the yard? Everyone wants their horse to perform at the height of it's ability so it's tough. Hopefully you have owners who understand it's just a patch and that fortune will turn round in the long run.
Yards as a general rule of thumb don't really on prize money to fund themselves, it does however draw in new owners!
So whats the bread and butter of a decent yard then? The brad and butter is training fees through a daily cost per horse plus extras.
One or two wealthy owners who love the sport and who have three or more horses each are what every yard really needs. These owners are hopefully loyal and will use you year after year, topping up their stock. They are the ones who keep racing afloat.
In respect to training under saddle, what do the horses need to learn beyond the very basics of carrying a rider? In other words, what are some of the subtleties of a good racehorse's training? A lot of the time it's basic riding skills, shortening and quickening stride etc but the real aim is to get them to respond as well to the rider as possible. They have to respond to being asked to quicken or shorten. Ultimately each horse is different and generally the rider changes a lot to suit the horse.
Do you worry about having them change leads during certain sections of a race? With stride length, is it all based off rein cues since the jockey doesn't really have any leg (or seat!) aids to work with? Thank you! To be perfectly honest by this point I'm just glad I have got them there, it's the jockey's job to make sure he gives them a proper race. If you watch a race you will see the jockey uses his entire body when quickening, they still use their heels as much as they can!
So it's basically all about speed control? Could you explain how jockeys signal for the changes? Watch this
You can see as they come round the corner the jockey is holding his hands in a way that the bit just makes contact with the horse and holds it steady. When they ask them to go faster they break that contact and the horse no longer feel the bit and are physically encouraged by the jockeys movement.
Where do you get the leprechauns used in horse racing? and how do you coax them to ride horses for you? I generally find them hanging around rainbows actually. I offer them gold.
Did you ever get to work with / alongside Kauto Star? If so, just how awesome was he in person. His last King George win brought me to tears, such an amazing, beautiful horse! Sadly no but I was always a great fan of his. Great looking animal he was!
When I was in Newmarket visiting some of the tracks I was told that horse racing began to decline in the community when corruption with gambling and the treatment of jockeys were made aware. Due to these dilemmas, the community no longer firmly supported horse racing because it did not contribute to the steady state of the community that they initially sought. Is there truth to this? Can you further explain? Thanks! I think that maybe historically that could be the case but less so in this day and age. Nowadays corruption is rare and much easier to detect, staff welfare is very important and they have their own unions which continually lobby for better conditions.
Would you rather train 100 duck-sized horses or 1 horse-sized duck? Come on.
One horse sized duck. Think of the eggs...
Have u ever met John McCririck and is he a douchebag ? Not a face to face introduction but have attended several events he's been at.
Can confirm. Is a douchebag.
I just purchased an OTTB here in the US...he has set osselets and his last race was this past January. Is it common to race a horse with known ankle problems? Nope. If it moves badly it doesn't race. Fluid, comfortable movement is one of the most important things in horse welfare.
Do your racehorses piss frequently, or is it just that when they do have to piss, they really have to piss and can't hold it in? Aww man. They piss a lot. And it's not pleasant either. Did you know, horses are unable to walk and piss. They just can't do it.
Horses like to piss at irritating times, unless of course we are being dope tested and they will absolutely refuse for hours.
Did you know, horses are unable to walk and piss. I don't think that I could either; it's an eitheor thing for me. You should try it. it looks hilarious.
Odd question, but have you ever had any luck teaching them to do their business in one particular place, like a dog, or do they go pretty much anywhere? I worked at a stable once, and there was an old stallion who would only "go" in one corner of his stall... Horses are weird. There is no method. Some are just mental.
What kind of preparation does the horse go through the day and night before a race? I've always wondered do horses ever have a terrible nights sleep or a bad travel to the course and that causes them to under-perform. Whats the most common reason a horse under-performs in your opinion? There is a few things that may happen. If the race is far away the horse may travel to the racecourse the night before. This is to allow it to recover to be in best condition as long travel is taxing to the horse.
If it's at home I will give it less bulky feed at it's morning feed. Just high energy protein generally. We will then jump in the box and drive to the racecourse to arrive a few hours before the race. I think travel is a consideration when considering under performing horses.
Most common reasons for underperformance... I'd have to say the ground. If the ground isn't to the liking of the horse it can have a real effect on the way they run the race.
What happens to mediocre horses after they're through racing? We try to rehome them just as well as the best ones. A lot of owners really care about their horses and take them back for their retirement. If nothing can be done sometimes they have to be put down which is always sad.
What's the best breed? Both for racing and in general. Well thoroughbreds. It's the only professional racing in this country and I think they look just great.
Would it be legal for you to bet? It is legal for me to bet on one of my horses to win. I can't bet to lay a horse. I believe Jockeys can't bet at all.
Edit: Word change...
Who's going to win the Derby this year? God I wish I knew. Aidan O'Brien's probably got a good shot with his thing. That man gets some class horses.
What kind of jobs are there in the racing industry? I have grown up with horses and would love to work with them professionally but unsure what is available really. Do you need racing experience to become involved in the racing world? Exciting to see a fellow Brit here :) Try this
My best advice is find your local trainer and offer to work on weekends. They may pay you but they might not. If you're lucky they will give you a chance.
Hi,I was a part time worker of japanese horse racing track.it was the easiest and well paid job I have ever gotten. do you have any ideas to improve japanese horse racing industry?or do you know any good japanese jockeys or horses? Hey there, I don't really know much about Japanese racing apart from it's got one of the best prize money returns! I think we can learn a lot more from you than you could from us.
When jockeys change weights, do they have to make up additional weights? If so, how are the additional weights attached on? They do indeed need to carry more weight. This done in the form of weight plates, these are made of lead and added to a special weight cloth worn under the saddle.
Do you get to go to the races with the horses you train? I try to go with as many as I can, either to lead up and groom or to saddle up. Sadly I don't have as much time as I used to but I still make all the effort to go. Especially for my favourites.
If you make it to Brighton, there's a load of redditors who meet up several times a week. Fantastic! I quite frequently go to Fontwell and Plumpton which are both nearby (kinda) haven't raced at Brighton though. I will have to alert the redditors next time I'm there...
BTW, Where's Shergar?? I will forward that question to Findus for you. They are good at hiding horses.
Is operant conditioning used in training, i.e. race with other horses and reward the horse when it wins? I wouldn't say it's used as a training method. If one of mine wins I always give it a little something extra and a few days off.
My potential future father-in-law was a horse trainer in his youth. What are some things I can learn about it for conversation topics? Perhaps a book or some similar resource so I can ground myself in some of the basics? Just start to follow racing a little, try and understand how it works. As for books I don't really know anything personally but some people are great fans of the Dick Francis novels which are based round horse racing however I can't say I have read them.
What does it take to train a good racehorse? Im yet to have a good racehorse, maybe I could let you know in around 30-40 years? I might find one by then...
But seriously some guys have a really good strategy, Nicky Henderson is always right up there on the Jumps side and Aidan O'brien recently has been incredibly good. I think the trick is to lots of wealthy owners!
Does the industry believe that sheikh Mohammed's investigation, that coincidentally cleared him of any knowledge of what was going on, was genuine? Who knows? I doubt Shiekh Mohammed would have actually turned to his trainers and said "Use drugs bro." I would imagine that the environment of pressure he puts on those who work for him is so great they feel like they have no choice.
that Dubai airlines flight full of drugs... that was just a coincidence then? Not at all, the drugs scandal has stuck very firmly to Shiekh Mohammed. He might well be guilty but I wouldn't know either way!
Were you just at the gold cup in Cheltenham? My wife is from (and her parents still live) about five minutes drive from the track :) Sadly not the Gold Cup! I went on Thursday for the World Hurdle and it was a really great day. Cheltenham is one of the best courses in the country and I really love that part of the Cotswolds.
What happens to foals who don't make the cut as racing horses? We try to rehome and retrain as many unraceable thoroughbreds as possible. However if nothing else can be done some are sadly put down.
I've won the last two grand nationals with 100 to 1 winners from random tips off strangers on the internet. So random stranger do you have a tip for me? I am not your random stranger my friend. Go with your system, pick a long shot for the national. Anything could win it.
As someone from Louisville, Kentucky, have you ever been to Churchill Downs? If so, what is your opinion on the track? It's one of the most known tracks worldwide because of the Kentucky Derby. Sadly no! But I am visiting Kentucky this time next year so let me know what I should do when I visit.
Do ya'll eat the horses when they are too old to race? What do you think I ate for dinner? Pizza?
(It was Pizza...)
Hi! You answered in another question that the horses know they're going round in circles, they know where the stables are and so on, but how well do they understand the concept of racing - i.e. how well do they know that the point is to be ahead of all the other horses at a certain place? Yeah some are better suited to different kinds of races. Some like to be in front all the way and hate to have other horses compete with them. Other like to slowly build from the rear of the field and then burst forward using their turn of foot. Others just plod along at the same pace and hit the line just right.
