Group G of the Champions League was deemed by many to be the most even group in the competition after the draw. This is true to a certain extent, as the difference between first place and last place in Group G is 5 points, which is the second lowest out of all the groups, with group E actually only having 3 points between the two extremes (Sevilla in 1st place with 4 points, Maribor in 4th place with 1 point).
However, if we take the point difference between 1st and 3rd, which is also 5 points for Group G, this is now in fact the 2nd highest difference in points between 1st and 3rd out of all the groups (joint with Group C), with Group H having a 6-point gap between leaders Real Madrid (6) and 3rd-placed Borussia Dortmund (0).
The gap between 1st and 2nd in Group G is also the (joint) highest out of all the groups, coming in at 3 points between 1st and 2nd place.
So the group is perhaps not as even as many thought it would be, although this could change, we are only 2 matchdays in.
The current order of the group is also the exact opposite as the betting odds were indicating (before matchday 1). AS Monaco were deemed the most likely to top the group, and Besiktas to come last, with RB Leipzig in 2nd and FC Porto in 3rd.
RB Leipzig vs. FC Porto This match holds certain significance to both teams. For FC Porto, a win at the Red Bull Arena would see them move up to 6 points and remain in 2nd place. A draw would see them move up to 4 points and still remain in 2nd place. A loss could see them fall all the way down to 4th, if Monaco were to defeat Beşiktaş. Porto are on fine form, having won 8 out of 10 games this season, still being undefeated in the league with 2 points ahead of 2nd placed Sporting and 5 points ahead of the current 4-time-in-a-row champions Benfica. Their only loss this season came at the hands of Beşiktaş, where their best striker Aboubakar was missing because of a red card he got whilst playing for...Beşiktaş last season in the Europa League against fierce international rivals Olympiakos. (4D Chess?) Despite being sent off at 1-1 in the 39th minute, Beşiktaş still put 3 more past Olympiakos to win the match 4-1. Aboubakar has grown a lot since then though, and is now a much bigger asset that teams like Porto cannot afford to lose.
For Leipzig, it is extremely important to win this match. This is their penultimate match at home in the group stages, and if they want to continue their first ever European experience, whether it be through the Round of 16 or the Europa League, a win is vital. A win means they would move up to at least joint-2nd. A loss at home to Porto, and, if Monaco beat Beşiktaş, things would be looking very bleak for them. Leipzig have suffered their first ever European loss last Matchday which came in the form of a 2-0 loss to Beşiktaş, where many think the "Black Wall" was too extreme for them, which is not too difficult to believe considering it was their first ever
away European game as well. They are, however, on good form in the Bundesliga, most notably beating the "Yellow Wall" of Borussia Dortmund on Saturday with a 3-2 scoreline, in a heated match which saw two red cards. They now sit in an impressive 3rd place, 3 points off the summit and 1 point off of Bayern Münich. They have also not lost at home this season in all competitions, whereas Porto has not lost away from home this season in all competitions.
AS Monaco vs. Beşiktaş JK Beşiktaş have had an amazing start to their Champions League campaign, beating a Porto who had not yet conceded a single goal this season in spectacular fashion by putting 3 past them in Porto's Estádio do Dragão, where they had not lost a Champions League group stage game since the 24th of November 2015. If Beşiktaş beat Monaco, they will have almost definitely booked a place in the Round of 16, and be very likely to top the group, with 2 out of their next 3 games in the groups then being in their famed Bosphorus fortress, where they have not been beaten in their last 10 European games. The pressure may seem very low on Beşiktaş, as even if they lose, they still have 2 games left at home, and will still be top of Group G no matter the result of the other game. However, the pressure on them is higher than it appears, as their league form has been very poor, where they are sitting in 6th, 8 points behind the summit. They have only won 1 out of their last 4 games, and that was their Champions League game against RB Leipzig. Their league form is a polar opposite of their Champions League form at the moment, but were they to beat Monaco (which should seem likely as Beşiktaş beat Porto 1-3 away, and the latter then proceeded to beat Monaco 0-3 away, but thankfully that is not how football works), this could allow them to relax a bit, and focus on the league for these next months, as they would have already virtually guaranteed a place in the Round of 16.
AS Monaco are shockingly sitting at the bottom of Group G, despite getting to the semi-finals last year. This may not come as a shock to some people, however, with the likes of Mendy, B. Silva, Mbappé and Bakayoko, who all had stellar performances for Monaco last season, being sold off to more ambitious clubs over the summer. (how many times have you heard that so far this season?) They have now collected only 1 point from their first 2 CL games, and they now have to face group leaders Beşiktaş twice in a row. If Monaco still want to have a chance at the Round of 16, they need to get at least 3 points from the two crucial fixtures, and they would probably want to do this tomorrow, instead of trying to break the seemingly unbreakable fortress of Beşiktaş in Istanbul when they visit during Matchday 4. A win would see them move to 2nd if Porto lose, or 3rd if Porto beat or draw to Leipzig. Monaco sit in a not-so-comfortable 2nd place in the French league, with St-Étienne, Marseille and Nantes just 2 points behind them, and Lyon & Bordeaux also just 3 points behind them.
Conclusion Everything will be made much clearer tomorrow. The group could become incredibly contested if both Leipzig and Monaco were to beat Porto and Beşiktaş respectively, which they could very well do, as they both play at their homes. A Beşiktaş win would virtually guarantee the Turkish team's place in the Round of 16, as no team who have won their first 3 opening games has ever failed to progress beyond the group stages, and this coupled with a Porto win would quickly turn the "most even group" into the group that is already looking very decided, just 3 matchdays in.
submitted by After a successful accumulator yesterday, I'm using the winnings to bet on this evenings Europa League fixtures. I thought I'd start this thread so we can all help each other devise a winning bet.
What I know so far that may help you decide on who to put money on is this:
Reportedly Napoli are making 9 changes to their team for tonight's match with AIK.
Liverpool have reportedly left Gerrard, Reina, Suarez, Agger, Alan, Skrtel, and Kelly out of the squad for their game.
I'm also refusing to go anywhere near the Twente Vs. Hannover game, I have no idea how that one will go.
Anyone got any tips?
