We Interviewed Aron 'Sonic' Groesbeek yesterday. Talking to him you can be sure he is full of eNergy and very enthusiastic ( get the Pun ? :D ) He has been one of the most popular players in the South African CSGO scene and its been awesome to have a talk with him. How long have you been playing Counter Strike professionally for?
I believe my professional career in counter strike started once I joined Energy eSports last year early December, which has been about 8 months.
Who influenced you to pursue CS as a career? What other pros do you follow and emulate?
The player I felt who influenced me the most was local player Robby "blackpoisoN" Da Loca. When I first arrived on the scene I felt like he was undoubtedly one of the best players in South Africa alongside his teammate Dimitri "Detrony" Hadjipaschali. I have massive respect for these players and their effort to get to the position that they were in,so I decided to follow them. As for international players I would have to say that Nathan 'NbK' Schmitt was responsible for my interest in counterstrike when I was younger and has been a big inspiration ever since. I hope to oneday play against him on the international stage or even alongside him someday.
How easy is it trying to play CS professionally in SA considering that the scene is not as well developed?
I believe since the SA scene is so small it makes it extremely difficult for young talented individuals to find their way into top teams mainly because of the lack of LAN tournaments compared to that of the European scene. South Africa is quite isolated and very few are offered the opportunity to play internationally.
South African Teams have had lots of roster changes / shuffles. How does it affect the team play / team chemistry? How quickly did you adjust to your new teammates in the case of your switch from Nav to eNergy?
When I was brought into eNergy I was expected to step into the role fulfilled by a previous player in the team which required me to adapt my gameplay at a rapid rate. This affected my performance at first but once I had found my feet I began feeling more comfortable in my role and began performing. I think when a team is faced with a roster change of even 1 player it has a detrimental effect on synergy within the team and can cause short term performance issues. The time in which a player is able to synergise with his/her team is a very influential factor to that team's performance and communication. I believe it can determine whether your team will fail or succeed. Recently, eNergy underwent a heavy roster change of 3 of its players. Myself and Tiaan “TC” Coertzen sat down and decided on 3 new players who we felt would integrate well with the future team vision would be willing to put in the required practice and match time. We played well with one another over the course of 2 weeks and placed 1st at our first LAN competition against all the top teams in the country.
Considering you are so young, how has it been for you to balance your professional gaming career with your studies / life?
It was very difficult at first to play professionally and still focus on my school and sports. It was difficult to convince my parents of the importance of my eSports career and to persuade them that I am able to successfully balance all my activities. I eventually decided to quit my school sports and move my focus fully to eSports in order to pursue my dream. Deciding to play professionally has actually been advantageous to my social life, since it allows me to engage with a larger group of people whether it is at events or even online.
What are your greatest strengths as a player? Conversely, what are your greatest weaknesses?
I believe my greatest strength in counter strike is being able to predict my opponents in game decisions based on the current games events and being able to read a player based on the knowledge I have of that player due to their gameplay and or personality. I feel like my greatest weakness as a player is not communicating as effectively as I could with my teammates in-game.
Would you consider moving to NA or EU to pursue your CS career?
Definitely, I have every intention to play on the American and or European circuits.
How do you feel CS skin betting is affecting the scene in general?
I think betting has been very advantageous to the scene in that it has spurred rapid growth on an international basis and is likely to elevate the stature of e-sports to rank alongside other commercial sport business models.
How do you respond to the pressures of having your games being on Lounge and dealing with social media? Some players actually prefer their games not being on Lounge betting sites. Whats your opinion on that ?
At first I was quite excited to have so many people watch me play which did create a pressure filled environment then after a while the amount of spectators didn’t really phase me or my gameplay. I choose to ignore social media at times since its easy for people to abuse social media platforms in a negative way. I think it’s necessary for matches to be put onto the lounge purely because it grows the eSports scene and allows for more exposure of the smaller teams wanting to play at higher levels. It also teaches you stage presence when you that thousands of people are watching your gameplay.
Some People would say your gameplay is sketchy. How would you like to respond to that?
I would like to think that sketchy in this case means unpredictable. Unpredictability wins tournaments and this has sort of became my persona in a way where people have come to expect crazy shots through walls or through smokes from me. When I do pull of crazy things in-game it sort of fuels me and increases my performance throughout the game. The reactions from people are also very entertaining at times.
Other than eNergy eSports, which is your favorite team? & Why?
Locally my favourite team would be Bravado Gaming, purely because it’s a team that shares the same idea as eNergy in terms of a goal/end point for eSports in South Africa. Internationally I would say Ninjas in Pyjamas. They are veterans of the scene and have always managed to consistently remain one of the top teams in the world throughout 1.6 and cs:go.
What are your future plans?
For now I’ll carry on playing counterstrike professionally in South Africa with eNergy and improve myself as a player as best I can. Once I finish school I’ll reassess my next move to further my CS:GO career.
Finally Any parting words to your fans out there?
I just want to start by saying thank you to all of those who support me as a player and to those who share CS:GO passion. I believe that hard work gets the results. The same goes for CS:GO. Do not let others influence your path and demoralize you. A quote that I’ve always stayed by since the start of my career is, “Remember, people only rain on your parade because they’re jealous of your sun & tired of their shade.” Always look ahead of you.
Hope You guys loved this :) We should have more coming soon.
