Sub Survey Results!!

Thanks to everyone who filled out the survey! I was hoping to get some insight into what's bringing people here and how we can improve, and I think we mostly met that goal! You can go on a deep dive into the results below.
In general, people come here because of the sense of community and how nice everyone is. Ways we can improve: more engagement with each other and with the band (I lost count of how many people asked for Rian's AMA lol). The mods will work on what we want to do with some of these ideas and go from there.
81 people filled out the survey. Last year, we had 65 responses. I linked the results to the last survey, but I have not yet gone through to see what's similar and what's different.
Disclaimer #1: Some comments were lightly edited for clarify or spelling.
Disclaimer #2: Next time I think I want to do a survey, someone please remind me how much freaking work it is to put all the data together.
Disclaimer #3: My comments are in bold, as are the top selections for each category. I was a little sassy.
Reminder: There are controversial opinions about the band and normal song opinions. You're welcome to respond to anything but remember to be nice and respectful. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and mostly everyone is here because of how welcoming the community is.

A few pages out of my books about Sports Gambling

This was the first book I wrote in 2017:

Can you really make a living from wagering on Sports by The Outlaw Micheal Tomsik

Second book I wrote in 2018:

Book #2 Can You Make A Living Wagering on Sports by The Outlaw Micheal Tomsik

CLICK HERE TO LINK TO AMAZON KINDLE PAGE:I decided today to overlook both of my books on Kindle on Amazon about Sports Wagering. In really started the whole Sports Gambling Business in 2015.I operated a 1 year experiment I called the Outlaw Sports Betting Experiment. I did this because Nevada was going towards allowing Sports Investment Companies and I had decided that I was going to own and operate this type of business and company. In 2016 I got licensed and was the first company in Reno Nevada to place wagers at sports books with investors.Today in 2020 the whole sports industry has been turned inside out and upside down with the Covid19 outbreak, lockdowns, sports halting for months, no fans in the stands, playing in what is called bubbles, changing playoff structures, and overall all the different changes created for the Covid19 outbreak. Also another change Sports Wagering use to only be legal in Nevada, but as of 2020 government deemed to allow States to open Sports Wagering legally.States that are already allowing Sports Wagering : Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, New Hampshire.States that will most likely open later in 2020: Virgina, North Carolina, TennesseeIt is predicted that 33 out of 50 States will have legal sports betting with in the next year or so.According to research Sports Wagering is a billion dollar business so it is not a real surprise that it is opening up and expanding across the Nation. In 2017 the casinos reported 41.68 billion dollars in revenues from sports wagering.According to research 95 billion dollars was placed on the NFL and College Football, and overall 150 billion dollars was wagered on sports overall. You would believe the NFL would top the sports wagering industry but actually horse racing tops out at number one with the Kentucky Derby followed by Soccer and the NFL Super Bowl Game. The truth is the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB leagues fought sports gambling till just recently with law changes.Sports wagering is expected to be near 8 billion dollars by 2025.Though most people this is more for entertainment reason I still believe that Sports Wagering can be a full time career, business. However reading my books may give you some learning curves, there are many sports pick companies, and other companies that change money for giving picks.I never used any of these I developed my own system tested it and it worked.I only got out due to some reasons I stayed in my book because I had investors, and still answered to people.I believe I could be the first self employed gambling company in the world so I am considering a come back of :OUTLAW SPORTS BETTING COMPANY!

I went on a bit of a rant after skimming some senate bills. Feel free to use this to email your reps.

I look up bills in my state every once in a while for things I am interested in just to stay informed. After seeing poker lumped in as a "games of chance" like bingo and slot machines I wrote a bit of a rant to my representatives. Thought I would share what I wrote incase anyone here wanted to use it.
I know it's COVID and there are bigger issues. But even more the reason to allow online play. You might want to remove my reference to the Washington States Senate bill, but I'm sure something similar exists for you. For the most part, these emails are actually read. So it's not a waste of time to change what I have a little email it to a few people.
-------------
Find your reps: https://www.commoncause.org/find-your-representative/add
-------------
Hello, my name is [Name] and I live in [State] District [your disctrict number]. I am writing to you to voice my support for online poker and explain why it should be legalized. I was prompted to write this email after skimming a few senate bills, one of which (S-1558.1) read this:
"An affirmative vote of sixty percent of both houses of the legislature is required before offering any game allowing or requiring a player to become eligible for a prize or to otherwise play any portion of the game by interacting with any device or terminal involving digital, video, or other electronic representations of any game of chance, including scratch tickets, pull-tabs, bingo, poker or other cards, dice, roulette, keno, or slot machines. Approval of the legislature shall be required before entering any agreement with other state lotteries to conduct shared games;"
The part of this bill that is particularly inaccurate is classifying poker as a "game of chance". A game of chance would imply a fixed probability of a person winning or losing. Rolling dice has a 1:5 chance of hitting the number you want, Slot Machines are a programmed payout %, and all other games listed here fit in that category. But Poker does not. But the defining characteristic I think you should pay attention to here is that in the world of gambling the house has this fixed edge using probabilities. So no matter what a person does the house will always have a 3-20% edge. For example, if you are playing roulette, no matter what you do you have a ~47% chance of winning. Meaning the house has a 6% edge.
Yes, there are scenarios in poker where you can get lucky, but that is with any game or sport. The chance of it raining, the chance of twisting your ankle, the chance of sneezing. But aside from that, Poker it is far from a game of chance. This is most easily proven by the mere existence of professional poker players. People who are skilled at poker, win way more often than they lose on average.
The house has no edge in poker, individuals have an edge, but only based on their skill level. Skills include, but are not limited to:
  1. Knowing the value of your hand compared to the possible value of your opponents hands given the cards on the board.
  2. Knowing the probability of improving of your hand (If I need a heart, there is a 25% chance of that coming. If I need a King after the flop I have ~16% chance of winning)
  3. Knowing how to bet (and how much to bet), or call, or fold based on the value of your hand and the odds of it improving.
These are all skills that a person can possess to have an edge over other people. However, there is no edge for the house. This dynamic exists in many games, there is no difference in playing poker for money than there is in entering a singing contest for money. They both mostly involve the skill of the person vs their opponents, the only difference is that odds of getting a heart on the next card or getting a King after the flop are perfectly predictable opportunities of chance in poker, therefore more noticeable. But the luck involved in singing like humidity that day, technical issues, or getting sick are much hard to measure, therefore less noticeable.
Finally, I want to compare poker to something that is legal, truly a game of chance, and damaging to low income populations–the lottery. Online poker can easily be regulated and will mostly be played by higher income earners. Yes, it is possible for people to be addicted, but people can be addicted to anything. Being online vs in person does not make a difference as to how an addict will behave. However, the lottery is more addictive and specifically targets low income areas. The fact that the lottery is legal and people can pay $10 - $100 a week on a game that they have a near 0 chance of "winning", but cannot play online poker with that same money and improve their chances overtime just does not make any logical sense.
If someone is addicted to poker, they will play poker. The only difference is that you are forcing them into playing in person where the cheapest game is $300 to buy in. But the advantage of online poker is, those same people can get their fix buying in for $10. By making online poker illegal, you are hurting the very people you say you are protecting even worse. Poker was made famous in America with online poker, now we are the one of the only countries beside Iran and North Korea where it is illegal. If [State] truly is a progressing place, you will reconsider your stance in online poker and make it legal and regulated the same way New Jersey, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Delaware have.
Thank you for taking the time to read my position.

Jeopardy! recap for Thur., Jan. 30

.Please welcome today's contestants:
Joshua once again proved to be an effective DD shopper, scoring on both in DJ and taking first place into FJ with $21,000 vs. $13,400 for Michelle and $4,200 for David.
DD1, $400 - BOOTS - Chukka boots are said to get their name from a period in this sport (Michelle lost $2,000 from her score of $3,400.)
DD2, $2,000 - WHO SPOKETH IN THE BIBLE - "Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God" (Despite not knowing the previous two clues in the category, Joshua bet his entire $3,000 and was correct.)
DD3, $2,000 - MEDICAL PROCEDURES - A keratoplasty is another name for one of these eye part transplants (Joshua won $5,000 from his total of $12,800 vs. $11,400 for Michelle.)
FJ - ADVERTISING & MUSIC - In 2008, 34 years after it made Billboard's Top 10, this song title was used by a southern state in a tourism campaign
Michelle and David were correct, with Michelle adding $4,500 to win with $17,900.
That's before our time: Very, very depressingly, no one realized that a first-round clue's reference to a 1960s "music group's boots" was about the Beatles.
Correct Qs: DD1 - What is polo? DD2 - Who is Gabriel? DD3 - What is the cornea? FJ - What is "Sweet Home Alabama"?

ECW Hardcore TV (June 1993)

Welcome wrestling fans, it’s time for another month of Eastern Championship Wrestling. It’s been pretty fun so far. The Sandman/Rockin’ Rebel feud is alright. But I cannot wait for the Muraco/Sandman match.

June 1st, 1993

We are on the road to ECW Super Summer Sizzler Spectacular ‘93. I wonder how long I have to put up with Stevie Wonderful. It’s worse than Positively Page. They introduce a recap package of the Tag Title change from last week. Thank god he is kicked off commentary like right away by Paul E. I love it. Thank Christ.
Footage from the Tag Title Match last week
They show the footage of the Suicide Blondes winning the ECW Tag Team Titles.
“Wildman” Salvatore Bellomo (3-2-0) vs. Super Destroyer #1
Salvatore Bellomo had been trying to call himself Super Destroyer #3. This pissed off Hunter Q. Robbins III and thus we have this match. It’s alright. Bellomo isn’t the best worker but he worked well against #1. That is until #2 came out and started a beat down. Tommy Cairo came out and tried saving Bellomo. Eventually they cleared the ring and #1 was disqualified. Then, out of nowhere, Salvatore Bellomo clotheslined Tommy Cairo.
Tommy Cairo & Glen Osbourne vs. Hot-Stuff International III (Eddie Gilbert & Jimmy Snuka) (1-0-0)
I actually enjoyed the action in this match quite a bit. Tommy Cairo looks great against Eddie Gilbert. I would like to see a program between these guys. Snuka puts a good beating down on Osbourne. This was a good tag-team match. Eddie Gilbert wins after dropping Tommy Cairo onto the top rope and pinning him.
J.T. Smith (0-1-0) vs. Max Thrasher
We start watching this match but it cuts out almost instantly with Jay Sulli cutting in.
Additional Footage by Jay Sulli
Jay Sulli interrupts the match and provides a run down of some of the matches that we didn’t get to see on Hardcore TV. They showed footage of a battle-royal where Tony Stetson turned on Larry Winters. Then we got footage of an ECW Tag Team Title match with The Suicide Blondes (Now with another member) facing off against The Super Destroyers. Then Salvatore Bellomo came out and all hell broke loose. Apparently Hunter Q. Robbins III is now managing The Suicide Blondes and Salvatore Bellomo has officially joined the Super Destroyers. I am confoozled. Then we got Road Warrior Hawk getting beaten down by Hot-Stuff International. The Dark Patriot also made his debut. Jay ends by plugging the Super Summer Sizzler Spectacular ‘93.
J.T. Smith (0-1-0) vs. Max Thrasher
We come back to this match still underway. It’s so funny that ECW gives no shits about J.T. Smith. Then just as I was thinking that, J.T. Smith got a rollup on Max Thrasher for the win. Then Paul E. leaves commentary. So sad.
ECW Heavyweight Title Match: The Sandman (w/Peaches) © vs. Don Muraco (w/Paul E. Dangerously & Hot-Stuff International)
Uggghhhh… Stevie Wonderful is back in the booth. This match has a big-time feel about it. I was pretty excited. Don Muraco is big and strong but he has shown some flaws. Sandman just doesn’t appear to be on the same level as the Magnificent Muraco. These two hosses toss their beef around for a bit. It looks like they are potatoing each other. Dangerously trips Sandman and Peaches attacks Paul E. Then Rockin’ Rebel comes out and beats up Peaches. Sandman KO’s Rebel, but gets clobbered by Paul E’s phone. Muraco gets the pin and the win. Don Muraco is so blown up he can’t even give an interview at the end. Jimmy Snuka says the only thing he can seem to say, TCB, Takin’ Care of Business!

June 8th, 1993

Still on the road to the Super Summer Sizzler Spectacular ‘93. Paul E. and Jay Sulli are opening the show and wearing tuxedos. They talk about the debut of Road Warrior Hawk. They will show the Battle Royal for the Pennsylvania State Heavyweight Title. And then they run down the rest of the card. Tod Gordon comes out and introduces Road Warrior Hawk.
Terry Funk/Eddie Gilbert Feud Package & Interview
They run a package looking back at the feud between Eddie Gilbert and Terry Funk. Terry Funk comes out and talks about the Texas Deathmatch. Then Paul E. challenges Terry Funk to fight the Dark Patriot. Terry Funk accepts.
The Samoan Warrior & Don E. Allen vs. Road Warrior Hawk
Handicap match for the newest ECW acquisition. Hawk makes this look pretty easy even after an early match ambush. Hawk tosses Don Allen on-top of the Samoan Warrior and pins them both for the win.
Road Warrior Hawk Promo
Hawk cuts a promo against Jimmy Snuka as he will be meeting him next week on ECW.
Eddie Gilbert Promo on Terry Funk
Eddie Gilbert cuts down Terry Funk and says that he is Philadelphia’s true hero. And that’s why he will win the Texas Chain Death Match.
ECW Pennsylvania Heavyweight Title Battle Royal: “The Ironman” Tommy Cairo vs. The Sandman vs. Rockin' Rebel vs. JT Smith vs. Sir Jonathan Hot Body vs. Larry Winters vs. Sir Christopher Candido vs. Glen Osbourne vs. Tony Stetson vs. Salvatore Bellomo vs. The Samoan Warrior vs. Max Thrasher vs. Super Destroyer #1 vs. Super Destroyer #2 vs. Herve Renesto vs. The Canadian Wolfman
It’s a cluster fuck for the first 10-15 eliminations. The action really picks up in the last three minutes. We get to see the breakdown between Larry Winters and Tony Stetson happen. They showed us that last week. Then Tommy Cairo got worked over by the Suicide Blondes. It came down to Larry Winters versus Tommy Cairo with Cairo winning the belt. It was good, Tony Stetson and Larry Winters made up on the outside then Stetson attacked Winters.
Stevie Wonderful interviews The Sandman
Peaches and The Sandman cut promos on Rockin’ Rebel and Tygra. It’s going to be a Street Fight at the Super Summer Sizzler.
“Wildman” Salvatore Bellomo promo on Selvester Stallone
I don’t get this guy. He is just spouting nonsense. The production team doesn’t know what he’s talking about either.
ECW Tag Team Titles: Tommy Cairo & Glen Osbourne (0-1-0) vs. The Suicide Blondes (Sir Jonathan Hotbody & Sir Christopher Candido) © (w/Hunter Q. Robbins III) (2-1-0)
It’s official that The Suicide Blondes are now managed by Hunter Q. Robbins III. We also get Paul E. on Commentary again. Thank god. I don’t really know why Cairo and Osbourne are #1 Contenders to the titles. They are 0-1. Candido and Osboune start things off. Osbourne is great, he really kicks Candido’s ass all over the ring. Tommy Cairo looks great too. He hits some awesome Belly-to-Belly Suplexes on both members of the Blondes. Robbins III hits Osbourne with a cane letting Candido get the rollup for the win. After the match Hunter Q. Robbins announces his management for the blondes. Then he announces a third Suicide Blonde, Sir Richard Michaels. The Super Destroyers come out and confront Hunter Q. Robbins III and demand a Title Shot. Then they fire and beat up Hunter Q. Robbins.
The Super Destroyers Promo
The Super Destroyers call out Tod Gordon and ask for a Tag Team Title match! Tod Gordon accepts the challenge and makes the match for next week!
ECW Heavyweight Title Match: Don Muraco (w/Paul E. Dangerously) © (3-0-0) vs. The Sandman (w/Peaches) (3-1-1)
We join this match in progress with Eddie Gilbert on commentary with Jay Sulli. Sandman is improving his look. He actually looks like a viable competitor there. He looks like he is doing much better than last week. There are a lot more rest spots and I think that has to do with how much Don Muraco was blown up last week. Sandman looks like he might actually win the belt back. But I am betting against it. Peaches keeps getting involved allowing Paul E to help Muraco. Sandman gets counted out after Don Muraco attacks him on the outside.

June 15th, 1993

The go home show to the big PPV is hosted by Jay Sulli and … They run down the card. I wish they would stop giving the mic to …. Road Warrior Hawk and a bunch of kids come out. It’s awkward.
ECW Television Title Match: Jimmy Snuka © (w/Paul E. Dangerously) (4-0-0) vs. Road Warrior Hawk (1-0-0)
These two start off angry. Snuka and Hawk work really snug and Snuka looks pissed. Hawk looks great, but he always has this look on his face like he’s really unsure about ECW. Hawk powers Snuka all around the ring. Clearly establishing his dominance in this new environment. Paul E. constantly interferes, making himself known at ringside. Giving Snuka an upperhand. The match picks up towards the end when Hawk gets a pin, but Hot-Stuff International interferes and and Snuka is DQ’ed. Eddie Gilbert even throws a ball of fire into Hawk’s face! It’s nuts!
ECW Tag Team Titles: The Suicide Blondes (Sir Jonathan Hotbody & Sir Christopher Candido) © (w/Hunter Q. Robbins III) (3-1-0) vs. The Super Destroyers (Super Destroyer #1 & #2) (3-1-1)
This match is joined in progress. It looks like The Suicide Blondes have their work cut out for them. There are some great spots in this match and I am sure this would have been a great match bell to bell. But it breaks down when Salvatore Bellomo comes out and inserts himself into the match. I am pretty tired of that. The ref throws the match out. The Suicide Blondes run away and Salvatore and the Super D’s make Tod Gordon come out and promise a Three on Four tag team match.
Eddie Gilbert promo about Terry Funk
Eddie Gilbert cuts a promo from some park. He talks about himself being the hero of philly.
“Tune-Up” Chain Match: “HotStuff” Eddie Gilbert (w/Paul E. Dangerously) (1-1-0) vs. Ernesto Benefica (0-3-0)
Eddie Gilbert destroys Ernesto Benefica and easily wins the chain match. But not without dishing out some punishment to Benefica. Eddie is clearly sending a message to Terry Funk.
Terry Funk message to Eddie Gilbert
Terry Funk cuts a promo on Eddie Gilbert being the self-proclaimed King of Philadelphia.
A look back at The Sandman/Rockin’ Rebel feud
Tygra and Rockin’ Rebel cut a promo on The Sandman. It’s going to be a Street Fight with the stipulation that says Peaches or Tygra has to be humiliated if their man loses.
The Dark Patriot & Paul E. Dangerously Promo
Paul E. cuts a promo about the Dark Patriot beating the hell out of Terry Funk.
Terry Funk vs. The Dark Patriot (w/Paul E. Dangerously)
This match is pretty big. It’s Terry Funk’s first official match on ECW television. This is the lead up to his match with Eddie Gilbert. Paul is, of course, making his presence known. The match quickly goes outside. Dark Patriot chokes Terry Funk with a coat-hanger! Can you believe it! Dark Patriot is really punishing Funk. Terry Funk makes a comeback and throws some huge fists. He nearly kills the ref. He even starts ripping the mask off of Dark Patriot. He gives some big DDT's to DP and catch Paul E. before he can interfere with his big cell phone. Then Funk returns to administer some punishment. But Eddie Gilbert comes out and hits Terry Funk with a crutch. Terry Funk wins by DQ. Then it cuts out pleading for fans to buy the PPV on the 19th.

June 19th, 1993 - Super Summer Sizzler Spectacular '93

Super Summer Sizzler Spectacular ‘93 kicks off with a match and Jay Sulli with Paul E. Dangerously on commentary. ECW has to do something about their PPV names.
ECW Television Title: Jimmy Snuka © (4-0-1) vs. J.T. Smith (1-1-0)
I have to say that I am okay with this match. JT Smith has really put up with a lot of shit. Smith does really well there. He beats up Snuka and flies everywhere. But Snuka comes back and starts laying in a deep beating. They go back and forth before Snuka kills Smith with the Superfly Splash. Snuka wins.
First Blood Match: Larry Winters (0-1-0) vs. Tony Stetson (0-1-0)
These two are fighting because Tony Stetson had a fit during a recent battle royal after he was eliminated. Larry Winters’ only crime is that hair. Both are trying to pick up a win after jobbing out to Main Eventers back in the first episode. Rockin’ Rebel comes out for some reason allowing Tony Stetson to get the upper-hand. Stetson hits Larry Winters with a chain. The ref says Winters loses since he’s bleeding.
Loser Gets Stripped Match: Peaches vs. Tygra
This is definitely a match from the 90’s. I was just thinking that as a sign came up in the back that read “We Want Skin!”. It’s nothing but a cat fight and the commentary doesn’t help. The match is trash. No actual wrestling. Peaches wins after tearing off Tygras clothing. Someone comes out and the crowd goes nuts. Rockin’ Rebel and Tony Stetson jump in the ring and tear off that woman's top showing her breasts. Sandman and Larry Winters hit the ring and cover her up.
ECW Television Title Match: Jimmy Snuka (w/Paul E. Dangerously) © (5-0-1) vs. Tommy Cairo (3-2-0)
Jimmy Snuka is working double duty here tonight working with his title against Tommy Cairo. It seems like Snuka has the advantage with Paul E. in his corner. But we have to remember that Jimmy Snuka already fought J.T. Smith tonight. Tommy Cairo is fresh. Terry Funk joins Jay Sulli on commentary and puts over Tommy Cairo as the Pennsylvania State Champion. These two go back and forth. Tommy Cairo seems to have an answer to everything that Jimmy Snuka can dish out. That is until Cairo trips and Snuka cheats to win. The fans are pissed.
Philadelphia Street Fight: The Sandman (3-1-1) vs. Rockin' Rebel (3-0-2)
I can’t believe that Sandman came out to Surfin’ USA by the Beach Boys. Yikes. These two beat the hell out of each other and keep the action on the outside of the ring. There is a spot with Rockin’ Rebel hitting himself in the head. Then Sandman clobbers him. Ehh… that’s rough to watch now. But this is ECW. Sandman is terrible in the ring. Tony Stetson interferes and gets DDT’ed by Sandman. Some blonde girl gets in the ring and just stands there until she sprays mace in the Sandman's face. Rockin’ Rebel gets the rollup and the win.
“Dirty” Dick Murdoch vs. The Dark Patriot II (w/Paul E. Dangerously)
Murdoch comes out to Paul E cutting him down and talking about Dark Patriot II being a replacement for Dark Patriot who is in Japan. Murdoch doesn’t even get his jacket off. Terry Funk puts over “Captain Redneck” who is “carrying a Turkey around the ring”. Murdoch looks great and puts up a hell of a fight. The crowd loves seeing him go. Dick Murdoch wins.
Six Man Tag Team Match: Sal Bellomo, Stevie Wonderful & Super Destroyer #1 vs. Hunter Q. Robbins III & The Suicide Blondes (Sir Jonathan Hot Body & Sir Richard Michaels)
I hate this. Stevie Wonderful and Salvatore Bellomo. This isn’t the match they promised! Then wow, out of nowhere, Joey Styles joins Jay Sulli on commentary. I was unhappy to see this match. But now it might be able to be saved. Thank god for Joey Styles. OH MY GOD. It looks like Chris Candido broke his arm and can’t compete. That sucks. There is so much hair in this ring. It looks like it stinks. For some reason Sir Richard Michaels is taking the brunt of the beating. Hunter Q. Robbins III gets in there and gets beaten up much to the meh of the crowd. Stevie Wonderful is being painted as a face even though he works with Hot-Stuff International. Weird. Sal Bellomo gets the win.
Texas Chain Massacre Death Match: “Hot-Stuff” Eddie Gilbert (w/Paul E. Dangerously) (2-1-0) vs. Terry Funk (1-0-0) (3¾ Stars)
Terry Funk is ready for business and so is Hot-Stuff. I personally couldn’t wait. Tod Gordon says that the winner will be crowned the “King of Philadelphia”. Eddie Gilbert plays the cowardly heel a lot to start the match. They go outside and use the chain pretty creatively. I liked this one quite a bit. There was a spot with Terry Funk “hanging” Eddie Gilbert across his back. That was good. About halfway through, Terry Funk gets busted open on the outside of the ring. It’s crazy since the fans are practically right up to the ring. Terry lays in some really tough hits. They go back out into the crowd and fight over to the merch tables. Terry whips the hell out of Gilbert. Then he drags him all over the place. Both men are bleeding profusely when they get back to the ring. Eddie beats up Funk some more. Touches three turnbuckles but Funk fights back and holds Eddie Gilbert back. Terry Funk hulks up and hits some badass blows. Terry Funk hits all four corners but the ref didn’t see it. Eddie Gilbert hits Terry Funk with a DDT on a Steel Chair and then touches all four corners. Paul E. jumps in the ring and calls the win for the “King of Philadelphia” Eddie Gilbert. Tod Gordon gets in the ring to complain to the ref, but Paul E. attacks him from behind and lays Gordon out. Then Paul E and Eddie Gilbert leave to a chorus of boos. This was a good show.

June 22nd, 1993

This episode is weird. We get a logo for Sports Channel with Paul E. announcing the re-airing of the ECW TV Title Match from last week between Snuka and Hawk. The whole match. It’s a good storyline moment with Hot-Stuff International taking out Hawk. Eddie Gilbert tosses a fireball into Hawks face. We get Paul E and Jay Sulli opening the show. Then Stevie Wonderful comes out and tries to face turn.
Vladimir Koloff & Ivan Koloff promo with Stevie Wonderful
Ivan puts over the Koloff name.
ECW Heavyweight Title Match: Don Muraco (w/Eddie Gilbert) © (3-0-0) vs. Tommy Cairo (3-3-0)
These guys really go toe-to-toe. Tommy Cairo looks great in there and he really puts a beating on Muraco. Eddie Gilbert gets so much heat in this match. Cairo looks great but Muraco is too strong and with Gilbert out there it's impossible. Muraco wins.
Dark Patriot promo
Paul E cuts a promo about the Dark Patriot
The Dark Patriot (w/Eddie Gilbert) (0-0-1) vs. JT Smith (1-2-0)
Dark Patriot puts a huge beating on JT Smith. Tossing him all over the ring and, at one point, he gave him a huge belly-to-belly suplex. JT Smith hits a huge moonsault but Patriot kicks out. JT Smith really shows some great talent in this match. He had me pop for some of his spots. Then Dark Patriot just started beating the shit out of JT on the outside of the ring. This turned into a very dangerous spot that I have seen numerous times in various video packages. Both guys go up to the second floor where the announcers booth is. Dark Patriot throws JT Smith from the balcony then Dark Patriot dives from the top! A huge ECW moment that has been played over and over. They really fucked eachother up with that spot. What a bad spot. Yikes. Dark Patriot wins after a countout.
Rockin’ Rebel & Stetson cut a promo
They talk about not being quitters while Rockin’ Rebel works a rod. Stevie Wonderful looks like a tool.
Rockin' Rebel & Tony Stetson vs. Larry Winters & Mr. Sandman (w/Peaches)
Winters works over everyone. He throws some pretty impressive moves. But he can’t make a kick look believable at all. Winters and Stetson can’t work well together. They keep obviously calling spots and taking it easy on eachother. Sandman and Rebel are the bigger attraction here. Sandman wins the match with a rollup.
A “King of Philadelphia” Eddie Gilbert Video Package
It’s set to kingly music.
Sal Bellomo & The Super Destroyers (Super Destroyer #1 & Super Destroyer #2) vs. The Suicide Blondes (Sir Christopher Candido, Sir Jonathan Hot Body & Sir Richard Michaels) (w/Hunter Q. Robbins III)
This is a mess. So much heel/face back and forth. It’s nice seeing both Super Destroyers and Chris Candido back. But we still have the comedy stylings of Salvatore Bellomo to deal with. I know I should be nice. But Salvatore is just not the type of wrestler I dig. The Suicide Blondes are a great team. They have a good dynamic and they work well together. But this match turns to garbage quickly as all six men start beating each other with weapons. Then Hot-Stuff International gets in the ring and starts going at it. They go off the air as this clusterfuck unfolds. The ref throws out the match.

June 29th, 1993

This show opens with Jay Sulli, Paul E. Dangerously, and Tod Gordon. The less Stevie Wonderful the better. Paul E is carrying Eddie Gilbert’s crown. Then we get an intimate sit down with Jay Sulli and Tod Gordon talking about the violence in ECW as of late. They talk about the fallout from Super Summer Sizzler Spectacular. Tod Gordon says that Eddie Gilbert has two brothers and they were working in cahoots with him to allow Eddie Gilbert to win.
Terry Funk vs. Eddie Gilbert Footage
The footage is followed by Terry Funk cutting a promo with his back to the camera. He says that he wants a hair vs. mask match versus the Dark Patriot.
Vladimir Koloff & Ivan Koloff promo with Stevie Wonderful
Ivan puts over the Koloff name. Stevie Wonderful still looks like a tool.
Ivan Koloff & Vladimir Koloff vs. Glen Osbourne & Herve Renesto
Ivan starts the match off by slapping the ring with a chain. Then we get the winning tag team of Herve Renesto and Glen Osbourne who are clearly going to go over. This is a squash match that has both Koloffs going over easy on these guys. It sucks that Osbourne has fallen so far. Vladmir wins easily.
Paul E. Dangerously promo for Eddie Gilbert
We get footage of Eddie Gilbert hanging out with people on Delaware Street.
Larry Winters (0-2-0) vs. Tony Stetson (1-1-0)
We join this match in progress. Larry Winters is beating the hell out of his former partner Tony Stetson. He really puts a beating on him. His kicks look much better than last week. These two must have been talked too since they are going at it so hard. The refs try to intervene but get thrown to the outside. Things get out of hand and the ref throws the match out. Double DQ. Then the ring fills up with wrestlers trying to hold these two apart. Crazy for such a mid-card feud.
ECW Television Title Match: Jimmy Snuka (w/Don Muraco & The Dark Patriot) © (6-0-1) vs. Tommy Cairo (3-4-0)
It’s good to see a big rematch here. Tommy Cairo deserves to get that title. He has been working so hard. Jimmy Snuka is just wandering around without any idea what's going on. He looks worried and the faces he pulls are worrying. Cairo looks great as usual. He puts in the work. But this just looks like a repeat of the same shenanigans from the 19th. Snuka wins AGAIN with the Superfly Splash. Snuka has the best Win/Loss record in the ECW at the moment. Then Terry Funk interjects and the ref reverses the decision. Tommy Cairo wins and Jimmy Snuka looks like he wants to murder Funk.
Salvatore Bellomo Promo
Who can tell what this guy is saying?
Sir Richard Michaels (w/Hunter Q. Robbins III) vs. Sal Bellomo
The match no one was waiting for! Salvatore Bellomo and The third Suicide Blonde. This match was garbage and wasn’t very entertaining. The Destroyers and Blondes come out and the whole thing turns into a schmoz. The ref throws it out.
TL:DR
  • The Jobber-Powers EXPLODE this month as the Larry Winters and Tony Stetson feud heats up.
  • The Sandman lost the belt to Don Muraco and doesn't really seem to care.
  • Jimmy Snuka is the winningist wrestler in the ECW at the moment.
  • It looks like Paul E. Dangerously is taking over more as an on-screen talent.
  • Try to find Super Summer Sizzler Spectacular on Dailymotion. It's way better than what they have on the Network.

How Did Your Favorite Players Perform (Relative to Seeding) At Glitch 7?

Sorry everyone for the late posting. Had a bit of a personal emergency while I was writing this. It's why it's a bit worse then normal this time. Also the cause of the lateness and a few segments/write ups being rather rushed. As normal, it's an analysis of how everyone did at Glitch 7. I covered the Top 48 Seeds and Top 64 placements. Let's dive right in!
Note: If you are one of the listed players and want to contribute a quote, please let me know.
Disclaimer 1: Not all runs are created equal. Some players needed to take on monsters to get their placement. Some less so. This is not meant to be an objective quality match-up of players.
Disclaimer 2: If a player had a bad tournament that doesn't make them a bad player. It is easier to perform below your standard then above. Thus, one tournament can make a career, but it can't break it. There are many reasons players lose.
As fans we have a responsibility to be good to players. They cry and sweat for us. The goal isn't to make players stress out about individual placements more, but to catch interesting story lines and data. Don't be a dick to players.
Disclaimer 3: It is easier for a low seed to overperform and for a high seed to underperform. Seeds are a stand-in for expectations. The bad part of high expectations is that beating them is hard. One should consider equal levels of over-performance to favor higher seed players in terms of level of impressiveness.
Disclaimer 4: An issue with seeding is just as good an explanation for some of these cases as bad play is. It is not always possible to tell the difference.
How to Read This: Number indicates placement relative to expected placement. The number reflects losers round expected to lose in vs actual loss. If a player was seeded between 13 and 16, that means they were expected to go out at 13th place. Thus, if they got a +1 it means they got 9th place. If they got a -1 then it means they got 17th.

+5 or More (Star Turn)

N/a

+2 to +4 (Strong Tournament)

(PG) ESAM. PGRU 16. 6th Seed. 1st Place. (+4) - The man of the hour. Shiny head. On the same day that Ash finally won the Pokemon League, ESAM dominated Glitch 7. He ended up through LeoN, Nairo, and Tweek before double eliminating his frequent foe Light to win the event without even dropping a set. That scream of victory was earned. This was far and away the biggest victory in his decade of Smash. Pika Pika.
(Demise) ZD. PGRU A51. 36th Seed. 9th Place. (+4) - Nearly a year ago, it was at Glitch 6 that ZD put himself into the top player contention with a 5th place finish. In the time since then, he’s struggled to get those gets to the point where he almost fell off the PGR entirely. But, here at the tournament that made him, ZD roared back into the spotlight. His two big wins here were Cosmos and Lui$. All in all, it feels like ZD is back in the conversation again, and that’s incredible to see.
SMB. 66th Seed. 17th Place. (+4) - SMB (or Scot! as he is normally known) has been new England’s best Luigi for a long time. Like most of Smash 4 long time. But, it’s been a long time since he got results like this. First a small upset over Young Eevey in winners, before beating 6WX, Dexter, and Puppeh in losers. A fantastic run from an old hand.
(Rogue) Light. PGRU 10. 5th Seed. 2nd Place. (+3) - There was a segment in late June/early July, but that seems distant in the past. WIth the exception of Shine, he’s got Top 8 every tournament for months. But, this? This was one of his finest performances to date, taking second at a 500+ person super major. Along the way he both double eliminated Dabuz and beat Samsora.
Gen. PGRU A51. 31st Seed. 9th Place. (+3) - This is was just a fantastic run. Losses to Tweek and Dabuz. Wins over Mr E, Young Eevey, Odyssey, Salem, and Sandstorm? It’s a hell of a performance...though, a lot of Tristate. I know Eevey and Salem break it up, but he couldn’t have run into an MDVA top player at some point?
Stocktaker69. 57th Seed. 17th Place. (+3) - The world’s best/worst named wolf player absolutely destroyed his seed here. But, he didn’t get a lot of upsets.
PreCookedBread. 152nd Seed. 49th Place. (+3) - Relatively unknown player, but he had a strong run, including an upset over 65th Seed Dietsoda.
Jakal. 20th Seed. 9th Place. (+2) - Man, Jakal’s epic washout at SSC really lit a fire in the man. This is his second 9th place result in a row. This time he even got a really strong PGR win in the process over fellow Tri-Stater Wishes. Jakal could realistically become the first PGR player with a “513th place” on his sheet.
(CLG) VoiD. PGRU 9. 18th Seed. 9th Place. (+2) - VoiDDDDDD yesssss. SoCal’s top talent returns from the depths of his character crisis with...Sheik!? In a flurry of blows that probably do, like, 3% each, VoiD beat yeti, SMB, and LeoN. Well, he needed to take his Pichu off mothballs for LeoN. But, all in all it was a really inspiring run that reminded us that VoiD could retake his Top 10 in the world status at any time really.
(AMG) 8BitMan. PGRU A51. 35th Seed. 17th Place. (+2) - His run started off good, not great, with an expected loss to Sinji in pools. But, I guess there is something in the MDVA water for ROB mains. He proceeded to cut through much of losers, including Suarez, before being stopped by fellow Flordanian….Flordinian...Floralsmoard...Florida person Salem.
Ismon. 33rd Seed. 17th Place. (+2) - The Texas Wario got upset early by Lucky the Plantlord, but made the most of a losers run. He beat the likes of Benny&TheJets, Juice, and...oh yeah...Rivers himself. That’s what I’m talking about.
(GLD) Young Eevey. 63rd Seed. 25th Place. (+2) - God hath brought me a bounty on this day. Remember, this guy? He’s the Bowser Junior main from the Netherlands who got Top 8 at Albion. Well, apparently that was not a fluke. Despite an early loss to SMB (join the club) he went all the way to Top 32 by beating no less a player then yeti. His first US tournament and he gets a PGR win? Fear this Penguin.
(ATU) Mekos. 60th Seed. 25th Place. (+2) - Lucas player from the Carolinas. The +2? An upset on Fatality himself.
Dexter. 50th Seed. 25th Place. (+2) - A member of MDVA’s pack of Wolfs. Managed to get a number of wins including Static, the Bowser, Blazing Pasta, and ESAM’s brother Nick Riddle.
Bully. 96th Seed. 33rd Placement. (+2) - A Link main from the Carolinas. He got won his pool by getting an upset over LingLing, and even managed to get a game off Samsora. Guess he practiced his Peach matchup.
Qwerty. 116th Seed. 49th Place. (+2) - A Lucario player who isn’t Jeda or Tsu? Fuck yeah. His upset was over Frozen.
(NGYN) Rocky~. 113th Seed. 49th Place. (+2) - This one took me a bit. He’s seemingly a local MDVA Bowser Jr, and his win? PG Coney. The announcer. Fascinating.
Sova Unknown. 98th Seed. 49th Place. (+2) - An MDVA wifi warior and another Link Main.

-1 to +1 (Normal Tournament)

(Liquid) Dabuz. PGRU 7. 4th Seed. 3rd Place. (+1) - Another good, not great, day in Buzworld. He got some really great wins here, including over both Tweek and Nairo. It would have been glorious...if he hadn’t been double eliminated by Light, and had Light pull the most over the top pop-off on him after he won. It’s okay though. ESAM avenged him by popping off over Light.
Wishes. PGRU 21. 24th Seed. 13th Place. (+1) - Remember all those naysayers who said Wishes would struggle to place with solo Joker? And by nay sayers, I mean me? Well. I was wrong. I am sorry Wishes. I did not expect you to beat Cosmos and nearly beat WaDi with solo Joker. I was wrong.
(DA) Sinji. PGRU 25. 30th Seed. 17th Place. (+1) - So wait. Sinji. PGRU 25 Sinji. Best Pac Man in the America Sinji...was put in 30th Seed? But, that 17th looks much closer to where he should have been seeded to perform to me. He only lost to Nairo and LeoN, while beating BestNess and 8BitMan. Yeah, I want someone to show their homework on this one.
(Demise) Mr E. PGRU 38. 26th Seed. 17th Place. (+1) - I know the meme about Mr E is that he is boringly consistent (except at EVO), but he actually got a really solid upset in the form of Puppeh here. Still only got the one though. We’re not exactly reinventing the wheel out here.
(GoTE) Vinny G. 43rd Seed. 25th Place. (+1) - One of Florida’s best Snake players. We always knew he was good, but his set with LeoN was a total nailbiter that Vinny only lost by a hair. He actually got to that set by beating BestNess too. Good showing, on screen and off.
(Ho3K) Dill. 41st Seed. 25th Place. (+1) - The best ROB in Tristate. He got a lot of benefit out of Elegant dropping out and Dazai taking his spot.
(InC) Odyssey. 58th Seed. 33rd Place. (+1) - Tristate’s most notable Fox main. Got an upset on Static the Boswer main.
(SCY) Lucky. 52nd Seed. 33rd Place. (+1) - Oh, I know this guy. This is the Midwest Plant main who took Shoe’s soul at Smash N Splash. Actually got an upset on Ismon, who went on to have a very good tournament.
SAUCE. 51st Seed. 33rd Place. (+1) - Mario main, I believe. Got an upset on hometown hero, Seagull Joe.
DiZ. 49th Seed. 33rd Place. (+1) - A CFL Plant Player. We actually got his game with Coney on stream. I believe his win was over JLIM, but it was not an upset.
(SN) Hawk. 94th Seed. 49th Place. (+1) - A wolf main from CT.
(Ho3K) Ralphie. 93rd Seed. 49th Place. (+1) - Tristate wolf main. His upset? ZD of all people. Who A. should have known that matchip and B. actually had a really really strong tournament otherwise.
Devvystar. 86th Seed. 49th Place. (+1) - MDVA Isabelle/Mac main.
(4lpha) Blank. 85th Seed. 49th Place. (+1) - No, this is not the Chom main. This is the Peach player from Connecticut. Got an upset over Deluxemenu the Bowser.
(DeLuXe) Static. 79th Seed. 49th Place. (+1) - Bowser player from Delaware. Made it into top 64 over Lucious and Flippy.
6WX. 74th Seed. 49th Place. (+1) - A top 50 all time Smash 4 player and one of the best Sonic players in the world. He actually got upset in pools and knocked Sandstorm out of the bracket, winning his $100 bounty.
(BCe BBM) Beast. 73rd Seed. 49th Place. (+1) - A Pokemon Trainer from Pennsylvania, I believe. Got an upset over Mata-Door.
JLIM. 72nd Seed. 49th Place. (+1) - Local MDVA Snake player. Made it this far because Squidboy got upset, I think?
(AG) WaDi. PGRU 24. 8th Seed. 7th Place. (+0) - WaDi is the king of MDVA and Glitch is his home turf. He basically played to seed here, but that proved a more daunting task than it might seem. Both Wishes and VoiD were in his way, and they had hot hands. The fact that WaDi fought his way into Top 8, only dropping sets to Top 10 players is proof of that.
(MVG) Dark Wizzy. PGRU 31. 7th Seed. 7th Place. (+0) - When Wizzy got 5th at Shine, people were clowning on him for not having beat any PGRU 1 players. Well, not only did he repeat the performance here, but did it with a PGRU win on Mr. E. He also game damn close to upsetting Tweek in the process.
(MVG) Salem. PGRU 22. 15th Seed. 13th Place. (+0) - Salem threw everything at this bracket. He played Snake, Hero, Greninja. He even brought his Bayonetta back from nerfed hell. Didn’t get him especially far though. He got crushed by a double dose of Tri-State Palu in the form of Nairo and Gen.
Lui$. 21st Seed. 17th Place. (+0) - Actually beat Rivers, which is solid. Still he got beat by both Light and ZD. AKA the other two meta-defining Fox players. Gotta work on that ditto.
(TG) MVD. PGRU 17. 17th Seed. 17th Place. (+0) - MVD actually got slightly lucky that Dazai took over 16th seed, and almost went positive on that alone. But, he got decidedly unlucky Wishes upset Cosmos and the two had to play for 17th.
LingLing. 32nd Seed. 25th Place. (+0) - NE’s best Peach. Got upset early by Bully the Link player. Still, he made an admirable losers run until he got stuck playing Cosmos for 25th. Still made it all the way to his seeded result.
(lluZ) Juice. 28th Seed. 25th Place. (+0) - One of Pennsylvania’s best players. I believe he’s been going Falco of late. Got a win on Frozen, but got upset by Ismon.
(OES) Benny&TheJets. 45th Seed. 33rd Place. (+0) - ROB main from the Carolinas with an awesome name.
(DARBLY) Deluxemenu. 44th Seed. 33rd Place. (+0) - Bowser main from Texas.
Kofi. 40th Seed. 33rd Place. (+0) - The Long Island Falco main. MDVA loves their spacies. Actually placed equally well in both Smash and Rivals of Aether.
(Typo) Sonido. 38th Seed. 33rd Place. (+0) - A Sonic main, of course. Avenged his defeat at the hands of Suarez with a victory of Burnsocks.
Burntsocks. 59th Seed. 49th Place. (+0) - One of MDVA’s two most prominent Yoshis. Lost to ESAM, like Suarez.
(NRG) Nairo. PGRU 8. 3rd Seed. 4th Place. (-1) - Nairo played pretty well. His two losses were ESAM and Dabuz, two other players who’ve been top level since Brawl. He came pretty close to beat ESAM on winners side too.
(SpS) LeoN. PGRU 35. 11th Seed. 13th Place. (-1) - Pikachu and Pichu in one bracket? As Boswer? That’s some bullshit. Trying to juke ESAM out with G&W was pretty funny though.
(PG) Cosmos. PGRU 11. 10th Seed. 13th Place. (-1) - Guys, I think we broke Cosmos. It was that damn 20 hour AYAYA stream, I bet. In all seriousness, this is only a minor underperformance. He got a decent win over MVD, but his losses to Wishes and ZD are more striking. That Wishes loss was edge of your seat, last second stuff too.
(Armada) BestNess. 22nd Seed. 25th Place. (-1) - He actually got upset by Vinny G early, but made it all the way to 25th, taking out Goblin along the way. His run got snuffed out by Sinji though. Mostly a mixed bag.
Fatality. PGRU 48. 29th Seed. 33rd Place. (-1) - Alas, the Falcon extraordinaire lost early to Mekos, the Lucas main. A shame since he actually almost beat Dabuz, on stream, in winners.
Suarez. PGRU 49. 27th Seed. 33rd Place. (-1) - You know Suarez is having a bad tournament when his nemesis Light makes it to the 2nd spot. He got upset by 8bitMan in losers, which is by no means terrible.
Adastran. 47th Seed. 49th Place. (-1) - This is the WiiFit player who recently beat Raito at Smash Con. Went out a bit early after being upset by Dexter.
(Demise) Seagull Joe. 46th Seed. 49th Place. (-1) - One of MDVA’s many wolf players. Got upset by SAUCE.

-4 to -2 (Weak Tournament)

(NPT) BlazingPasta. 23rd Seed. 33rd Place. (-2) - Pasta has been really flexing of late, so this slightly bad result is sad to see. He lost to Wizzy in winners, which is pretty normal, but then got upset by Dexter, one of MDVA’s pack of wolves.
(APE) Goblin. PGRU 39. 19th Seed. 33rd Place. (-2) - Not quite as bad as it looks. The Roy main got beat handedly by fellow Florida Aligator Salem’s snake. He was projected to go on in losers, but had the bad luck that BestNess had been upset earlier. It’s still technically an upset, I suppose, but this one tracks as bad luck mostly.
(W2W) Biddy. 48th Seed. 65th Place. (-2) - The Tristate Young Link. Got upset by Stocktacker and Disaea.
(SCARZ) Xzax. 42nd Seed. 65th Place. (-2) - The best Inkling in California. Alas, he got stuck in Young Eevey’s amazing losers run. It takes a lot to make me root against SoCal, but a freaking Bowser Junior player is “a lot”.
(Ho3K) Frozen. PGRU 46. 37th Seed. 65th Place. (-2) - The Tristate Palu (so rare) who popped off at Collision. After losing to Juice in winners, got upset by QWERTY, the MDVA Lucario. Guess, he kind of let it go here.
(WC) Sandstorm. 34th Seed. 65th Place. (-2) - His results at DreamHack Montreal and Low Tier City has placed the Brawlhalla champion in the conversation for up and coming talent, but his run was cut slightly short here by 6WX, the PGR Sonic player from Smash 4.
(TSM) Tweek. PGRU 2. 2nd Seed. 5th Place. (-3) - Tweek has several modes. Low Energy Tweek, eSports Tweek, and Fun Times Tweek. After the emergence of his top level PT at the end of the summer, he’s since largely used secondaries. This time he went mostly Banjo...and we can definitely say his Banjo is not bad. I mean, 5th place at an S tie- I mean A tier, losing to ESAM and Dabuz. This was Fun Times Tweek, but Fun Times Tweek is still a Top 10 in the world level player.
Dazai. 16th Seed. 33rd Place. (-3) - Oh Dazai. How the mighty have fallen. You were so close to...wait, who the fudge is this guy and how did he gets 16th Seed? Apparently he’s a local MDVA Swordies player whose been winning a lot at The Grind, and was seeded number 2 in his pool. Then, Elegant dropped out and he was bumped up to Elegant's seed, since he was seeded to win the pool at that point anyway. So, technically, nothing actually changed besides the number, and had his seed not been changed he’d be at +0. Does this drive me batty as a stats nerd? That’ll be a yes from me. Does my opinion really matter? Lol no.
(dB) yeti. PGRU 34. 14th Seed. 33rd Place. (-3) - Not a great result for the Megaman of the Midwest, but he actually got some money because he collected the $100 bounty for Fullstream the Rivals of Aether player. Ultimatly, he wound up here for two reasons. First is that VoiD is apparently godlike again. Second is that the Dutch Bowser Junior God Young Eevey blessed us with his presence.
(EU) Samsora. PGRU 4. 1st Seed. 5th Place. (-4) - Only placed here because of high seeding. Samsora did fine. He even got sweet vengeance on WaDi from CEO. But, the buzz that Samsora is number 2 in the world took the tiniest of hits from losses to Nairo and Light here. Both fellow Top Players, so definitely nothing to get your knickers in a twist about. But, not enough to firmly establish his Number 2 position either.
Rivers. PGRU 18. 12th Seed. 33rd Place. (-4) - James’ return to tournaments, sporting a revived Diddy Kong secondary, has yet to impress in the way that his string of results in May did. He got upset by Lui$ and Ismon here. Both spacies, which seems to suggest some kind of spacies related issue? Or maybe he’s just got a bit of rust.
Puppeh. PGRU 28. 9th Seed. 33rd Place. (-4) - For a little while after Puppeh’s godlike string of victories over top players at CEO in June, Puppeh was talked about as potential Top 20 in the world. But, he’s consistently only placed 17th or 33rd at majors since then. Which, all things considered, is hardly damning. Especially since his losses were Mr E and SMB, a PGR player and a dude on a tear. But, unless something changes, getting PGRU again seems unlikely.
(TG) MuteAce. PGRU 27. 25th Seed. 97th Place. (-4) - Funny seeing you here. MuteAce has always been rather prone to up/down swings in results, so I probably am not going to read too much into this. He also wasn’t using his normal controller apparently?

-5 or Lower (Wash Out)

Week 6 Watchability Rankings

We move onto week 6 in College Football, and it isn't a pretty schedule. Not too many big games, and not too many games in general, lot of bye weeks. Which ones should you watch? I've ranked all FBS vs FBS games, starting with...
Group of 5 Blowouts/Ugly Games 44) UTSA vs UTEP - 8:00, ESPN+: 2 of the worst teams in the country face off in the Sun Bowl this week. UTSA should have the edge here, as they have a much better run D. This will be a ground and pound game, which the Roadrunners will win.
43) Massachusetts vs Florida International - 7:00, ESPN3: In a battle of 1-win teams, FIU will be the ones getting their second win. UMass has one win this year, and that was vs 0-5 Akron last week. FIU has had much closer losses, and the home-field advantage here.
42) Liberty vs New Mexico State - 8:00, Check local listings: The first of 2 meetings between these teams this year will be terrible! Liberty has the better offense, and unless NMSU forces a shootout like they did with New Mexico, they'll win by 10+.
41) Rice vs UAB - 7:00, ESPN+: Rice may not win a single game this year, that's how bad they are. UAB has a very solid defense, and Rice can't score at all. Unless they pull off a miracle and learn how to score, they'll get dominated.
40) Ball State vs Northern Illinois - 3:30, ESPN3: NIU has had a terrifying 3 game stretch against all Power 5 teams, but now they can settle down. This is an easy nominee for ugliest game of the week. It has bad offenses, rain, and good defense.
39) Boise State vs UNLV: 10:30, CBS Sports Network: I hate putting teams as good as Boise this low, since you need to see just how good they are. Thing is, UNLV is freaking terrible. Make sure you watch the Broncos sometime this year, but not this week.
38) Eastern Michigan vs Central Michigan - 3:00, ESPN+: I'm very confused about EMU. They beat Illinois by 3 two games ago, and beat Central Connecticut State by only 5 last week. They'll have a great shot at a win here, but, honestly, neither of these teams will be a factor in the MAC.
37) Western Kentucky vs Old Dominion - 6:00, ESPN+: Stat of the day: WKU is leading the East Division of Conference USA despite losing to an FCS team week one. That says more about the quality of teams in that division than anything else. Either way, they win here.
36) San Diego State vs Colorado State - 10:00, ESPN2: SDSU is only a 7.5 point favorite here. I'd rush to my Local sportsbook and place a bet on them immediately. Their D is amazing, and the offense will do more than enough to win.
35) Memphis vs Louisiana-Monroe: 3:45, ESPNU: Which will be a higher total: Number of fans in attendance, or TV viewers? Only reason I ask: Who actually cares about this game? Memphis should blow ULM outta the water.
Power 5 Blowouts: 34) Bowling Green vs Notre Dame - This game has the biggest spread for an FBS vs FBS game I've ever seen: ND is a 45.5 point favorite. Even worse, there's a high chance they cover. That how bad BGSU is, they won't have a shot.
33) Kent State vs Wisconsin - Noon, ESPNU: Kent State had a whole extra week to prepare to get destroyed. Johnathan Taylor will either dominate this defense, or get very few carries and sit most of the game. It could actually be both.
32) Georgia vs Tennessee - 7:00, ESPN: Tennessee couldn't even beat Georgia State at home, what makes you think they'll have a shot against Georgia?! Next!
31) Maryland vs Rutgers - Noon, Big Ten Network: Rutgers has already fired its head coach this year. That won't help all too much for a team that's overmatched every conference game. Maryland will recover from last week's beatdown and win.
30) Oklahoma vs Kansas - Noon, ABC: The only real reason to watch this is for Jalen Hurts's Heisman campaign. He will light up the Jayhawk D, and he will probably be sitting by the end of the 3rd quarter, at the absolute latest.
29) Illinois vs Minnesota - 3:30, Big Ten Network: One of these teams is undefeated, the other lost to Eastern Michigan. That should tell you who wins this. Minnesota hasn't won a game by more than a TD, but they'll win by a pretty wide margin here.
28) Utah State vs LSU - Noon, SEC Network: LSU hasn't stopped scoring since the season started, and they won't stop here. Utah State has racked up the yards on offense, about matching LSU, but can't score the same points. They need convert on RedZone drives to have a shot.
27) Troy vs Missouri - 4:00, SEC Network: Any game that Troy plays seems to evolve into a shootout. The lowest they've scored in a game is 35, and they scored 42 and 43 points in their 2 losses. Mizzou's D is their stiffest test yet though, so we'll see if the points will keep flowing.
Close Group of 5 Games 26) New Mexico vs San Jose State - 10:00 Fri., CBS Sports Network: New Mexico's offense will have to ground and pound it in order to win this one. SJSU has a solid pass D, but they can't stop the run. NM will also need to stop the pass, but I think they can steal a win.
25) Marshall vs Middle Tennessee - 3:30, Facebook: This is our first true look at MTSU this year. So far, they've only played Power 5 teams, or FCS teams. Their defense has looked very rocky, and if that continues, Marshall will run all over them.
24) Tulsa vs SMU - 7:30, ESPNU: SMU is ranked for the first time since the 80s, and have already beaten TCU this year. They don't have many tough games for awhile, so they may overlook some of them. If they overlook Tulsa, it could be very costly.
23) Tulane vs Army - Noon, CBS Sports Network: These team faced off in 2015 and 2017, and this game will be very similar to those. Very close, and a solid amount of points scored. Only difference? Tulane won those 2 games, Army will win here.
22) Western Michigan vs Toledo - 3:30, ESPN+: The Rockets have already picked up some nice wins this year, and here's a chance for another one. The Broncos can put up some points, and they have a solid defense. They'll have to make the most of every possession to win.
21) Ohio vs Buffalo - 3:30, ESPN+: These teams are close in nearly every statistical category, except for one. Ohio's Rush Defense isn't great, and Buffalo can run the ball. If the Bobcats can slow em down, they'll win. Otherwise, The Bulls win a close one.
Potentially close Power 5 Games: 20) Vanderbilt vs Mississippi - 7:30, SEC Network: Vandy was in a dogfight with Northern Illinois last week, and now they have another tough game here. Ole Miss knows how to score, and if they scored 31 vs Bama last week, they'll score easily here.
19) Purdue vs Penn State - Noon, ESPN: If the Boilermakers were at full health, they'd have a legitimate shot here. Instead, without their big playmaker and starting QB, they need a miracle. Penn State should win easily, but they may not cover.
18) North Carolina vs Georgia Tech - 4:00, ACC Network: With the way the Heels looked last week, they should win easily here. Only issue is it's really hard to have that kind of performance week-to-week. If they don't play like that, GT may have a slim chance.
17) Oregon State vs UCLA - 9:00, Pac-12 Network: If the Beavers win this one, we'll know UCLA is in serious trouble. Oregon State's offense has looked very solid so far, scoring at least 28 in every game. If they get past that mark, they'll win.
16) Virginia Tech vs Miami - 3:30, ESPN: The Hokies got demolished by Duke last week, and most expected a close game there. Now, they're a 2 touchdown underdog this week. The U didn't look great last time out, and if they have the same issues, it'll be very close.
15) Northwestern vs Nebraska - 4:00, Fox: Both of these teams struggled mightily last week, with Nebraska getting pounded at home and NW struggling on the road. If NW doesn't win this one, it won't look too great for bowl eligibility. Nebraska also needs a win, to show they aren't a joke.
14) California vs Oregon - 8:00, Fox: This game will be decided exclusively by the Cal defense. They didn't look great against Arizona State last week, and now have a tougher test in Justin Herbert. If they get quite a few 3rd down stops, they have a shot.
13) Boston College vs Louisville - 12:30, ACC Network: The points should be flowing here, and it should come down to the end. Both teams run the ball really well, and can chuck it when needed. It'll come down to a late FG to decide the winner.
12) Ohio State vs Michigan State - 8:00, ABC: Will Ohio State set a season-low for points and still win? There's actually a realistic chance of this. Their lowest total of the year so far is 42, and Sparty allows 15 a game. They'll win, but they may not cover.
Must-Watch Games: 11) Baylor vs Kansas State - 3:30, ESPN2: This could be one of the few defensive Big 12 games this year. Both teams have allowed 16 PPG this year, and can run the ball well. State lost a pretty important game last week, so they need this one bad.
10) Air Force vs Navy - 3:30, CBS Sports Network: Everyone loves a good triple-option battle. This game will be over within 3 hours, but there'll be plenty of drama. It will be close throughout, and it could possibly come down to some passing, ya never know.
9) Washington vs Stanford - 10:30, ESPN: If the Cardinal want a shot here, they'll have to ride their defense. Eason is a tough test for anyone, but some turnovers could lead to a close game. Stanford just needs to take advantage of said turnovers.
8) Pittsburgh vs Duke - 8:00, ACC Network: Pitt's game vs Delaware last week was only close since they rested their starters. Kenny Pickett and the rest of the offense will be ready for this battle. Duke crushed the Hokies last week, and we'll see if they have the same firepower here.
7) Oklahoma State vs Texas Tech - Noon, Fox Sports 1: Although they don't have the playmakers they had in years past, The Red Raiders should still have a shot here. If their D can make some stops and add some turnovers, they could win.
6) Texas vs West Virginia - 3:30, ABC: I'm not too impressed with Texas yet. They had a close game with Oklahoma State last time out, and now have this long road trip. Both teams are fresh off bye weeks, so they'll be rested and ready to score.
5) Arizona vs Colorado - 4:30, Pac-12 Network: This game could develop into a shootout, which is odd for Colorado. They're usually a defensive team, but they're putting up 36 points per game. Arizona is just as good on offense, so be ready for points.
4) TCU vs Iowa State - Noon, ESPN2: This game isn't the most important, but it will be very close. Both teams have solid defenses, and offenses that can score. Expect a 31-28 kind of game, and one that could realistically have OT.
3) UCF vs Cincinnati - 8:00 Fri., ESPN: This game hasn't been close the last few years, but it should change here. The Knights need to keep winning for a shot at a NY6 bowl, but Cincy has the home-field edge. It'll be closer than most years.
2) Iowa vs Michigan - Noon, Fox: If Iowa wants to be seen as a contender, here's the time to do it. They have this game, then they host Penn State. Michigan's D is very good, so Stanley will have a tough test, and may need a late drive to win.
1) Auburn vs Florida - 3:30, CBS: Is Auburn truly ready to contend for the Playoff? We'll learn if they are here. The Gators defense is tremendous, and I have faith in their backup QB. It'll be a slugfest that comes down to the wire.

A College Football Fan's guide to the Rugby World Cup: Team translation guide

Hi folks. As you may or may not have heard, the Rugby World Cup starts tomorrow in Japan. Or today rather, in a few hours to be exact. As a fan a long time fan of College football and new-ish fan of rugby, I thought I could help provide some context to world rugby by making some comparisons between rugby and another sport that has dabbled in both amateurism and “amateurism” and is dominated by a handful of elite powers. For each team competing in this years World Cup, I have found a college football equivalent. Which isn’t that hard as there are only 20 teams in the World Cup. This is mostly to inspire debate and discussion so feel free to disagree, but please know these comparisons are canon and irrefutable.
Context
International rugby teams are currently divided into Tiers, which are basically divisions based on historical strength and competitions. There are 10 teams in Tier 1, which can be considered like P5 teams in college football, 13 Tier 2 teams (think G5 and FCS teams), and then a bunch of others that really aren’t worth going into at the moment. In Tier 1 there are two main competitions, the 6 Nations Championship comprising of six European (or Northern) teams and the Rugby Championship comprising of 4 teams in the Southern Hemisphere. Now I know this may seem odd to CFB fans, but there are stereotypes to the type of rugby played in each hemisphere. In the North, the rugby is said to be slower and more methodical, a product of the wet and cold conditions they usually play in. Games here are supposed to be won by forward play in the rucks and scrums. Southern teams generally play with flair and speed in the backs, where games are won with intricate link up play. Obviously, these are just stereotypes, and probably are less relevant now then in years past. And fans will definitely support teams from their hemisphere when facing off against teams from the other side of the globe. Unless that team is England. Because fuck England. In Tier 2, the regions are much less uniform, but certain teams have acquired notoriety for playing a unique brand of rugby.
Comparisons
Southern Hemisphere teams (Where it just means moreTM)
New Zealand = Alabama The one time a country should feel proud for being compared to Alabama. This shouldn’t be a huge surprise. In the past decade or so, both teams have been appallingly consistent in their domination of their respective sport. They both a never-ending conveyor belt of talented players, a style that is ruthlessly efficient, and fans that are, by this point, so accustomed to sustained success that I think they secretly like when their team loses a game every once and a while. It creates some intrigue before their teams inevitably outscore the remaining opposition by 50 points a game. Also, I think Steve Hansen, the New Zealand head coach, looks like an SEC head coach. Probably because of the jowls. Anyway, if you’re an Alabama/Patriots/Duke/Lakers/Yankees fan, save yourself the trouble and be an All Blacks fan. If you’re going to insufferable, at least be logically consistent.
South Africa = Georgia (University not country) You could argue Clemson fits here, but I don’t think the Springboks have enough sustained success at that level to be compared to Clemson. I’m going with the Bulldogs. They’ve suffered some embarrassing losses in the past few years, but they are back baby. They have relatively new head coaches that are starting to reap the benefits of their play style and player development programs. They are right there with the All Blacks/Crimson Tide, and have played classic, incredibly tight games against their more dominant foe in the past two years. They have loads of historical pedigree but have spent the best part of the past decade going between phases where they were elite but not quite championship level and other times where they barely above mediocre.
Australia = Florida Look, these teams have some issues right now. They were winners in the 90s and mid 2000s, but times have changed. They always have loads of talent on their roster, but they are deficient in a few key areas compared to the top, top teams. Still, it would be foolish for any team to write them off, and they have too much talent for most teams ranked below them to overcome. Also, their fans live in places with some of the nicest climates on earth yet live along nature that is constantly trying to kill them.
Argentina = Missouri These guys are both newer teams to their conference/championship. And it’s been an awkward fit, both geographically and culturally. They made deep runs at certain times, they always seem to have fun players, but most of the time they’re just kind of there to play spoiler. Which is perfectly fine compared to other teams listed.
Northern Hemisphere teams:
Italy = Rutgers Speaking of which. Italy is Rutgers. Rutgers is Italy. They were recently added to the conference/championship when they showed some promise (and as a way to expand the conference/championship market). But man, it’s been a struggle. They’ve lost by embarrassingly large margins. They’ve lost by heartbreakingly close margins. But mostly they’ve just lost. It’s not easy being a Rutgers/Italy fan, but one of these days, by god, it will pay off.
England = Ohio State Ugh. Everyone hates England. They even made an awesome commercial about it. Here, go watch it. And everyone hates Ohio State (source: Me). They both have annoying plant-based logos. They have more resources than all of their opponents. Their fans are smug and entitled. And worst of all, they generally are a very, very good squad. They have the athletic ability to adapt and play a variety of styles, usually better than their opposition. They are the only non-Southern team to win the CFB Championship/Rugby World Cup. Please don’t be an England fan.
Wales = Wisconsin Well, they both start with ‘W’ so that’s something. Both seem to like the color red. If you’re looking for something more meaningful, you could say they both play a rather conservative style that relies on their forward/line strengths, and that they have been incredibly successful with this strategy in the past few years, compared to lows in the 80s and 90s.
Scotland = Purdue No one becomes a Purdue/Scotland fan expecting to win the whole thing. You may even suffer some embarrassing loses along the way. But you can bet it will be a very entertaining experience. Purdue’s offence was once described as basketball on grass. And while I don’t think they know what basketball is in Scotland, it doesn’t take much to notice the similarities to Scotland’s fast-paced offence. And when they do pull off an upset, you have to admit they do it in style.
France = Michigan State I would say both fan bases have become used to huge swings in quality from season to season. Both Michigan State and France are probably in a down period at the moment, but that just means they could lose to a minnow in one game, then upset the favorites the following one. They still have a talented player pool but are dysfunctional everywhere else. I mean, c’mon it’s France, were you expecting things to according to plan? It was brave of you to assume France had a plan in the first place. Nothing is for certain with these teams except for uncertainty.
Ireland = Penn State This one was pretty tough. Both programs are going through good times in the last few years, especially compared to rough patches just a few years back. They’ve shown enough talent to compete and occasionally beat the best teams in the world on a given night, but can they do it consistently? And is their enough depth to sustain this run going forward? I don’t know, but you’ve beat England/Ohio State semi-recently, and they can’t take that from you.
Tier 2 Teams
Japan = Boise State -You pulled off an unforgettable, unbelievable upset against a great opponent. Great, now what. We’ll if you’re these teams, you’ve leveraged it to become a pretty consistent tier 2 power, one that can occasionally get a result against tier 1 team. And it’s not crazy to think they could upset a top tier 1 team again this year. But you need investment, and constant games against top opposition if you really want to join Tier 1. Too bad you won’t get that on regular basis.
USA = Houston Fuck yeah. You have a lot of potential and have been able to upset a bigger team here and there. But you haven’t quite had the consistency of a Japan/Boise State. But if given some investment, and some more opposition against better teams, it’s conceivable that you will be able to become a powerhouse in due time. Just don’t bank on it happening in the few years.
Fiji = UCF This is reach, for sure. I don’t think Fiji is quite at the level of UCF, but they’re not far off either. They could easily topple a bigger team this year, but they won’t be favorites against their Tier 1 opponents. The larger point for these comparisons for the Pacific Island nations is that, much like Florida for football, they produce a much larger share of talent than you would assume just by looking at their population, yet many of these players often do not play for their home nations for a variety of reasons. Of all the Pacific Islands, Fiji is the most well run. Therefore, they get to be UCF.
Samoa= USF It wasn’t long ago that USF was the darling mid-major that was positioned to be the fourth power in the state. But due to mismanagement, that potential has largely been squandered recently. The talent is obviously still there, but will the programs be able to retain and develop it?
Tonga =FAU Not as much prestige and not as much resources compared to the other two.
Canada=Tulsa I think my rugby and CFB knowledge have been stretched to their limits by this point. Basically, both of these teams used to be pretty decent Mid-Major teams but have declined steadily over the past few years.
Georgia (the country) = Wyoming Potentially dangerous to lower tier 1 teams and tier 2 nations but shouldn’t trouble the better tier 1 teams. Both situated in Mountainous regions.
Uruguay = Delaware? I think Uruguay beat the USA recently. And Delaware probably beat an FBS team at one point.
Russia = Morgan State Russia got walloped by Italy by like 75 points or something. In 2017, Morgan State lost to Rutgers by 65 points. Therefore, Morgan State = Russia +/- 10 points.
Namibia = Nicholls They both start with ‘N’ and I can never spell either of them properly.

Legalization Of Gambling In The USA

While gambling in the United States is legally restricted, sports betting in the country is gaining huge momentum quite lately. In fact, there are several states across the United States of America that are legalizing sports betting to enhance the entertainment aspect of the interested players.

On Circle's Edge, aka A Hater's Guide to the 2020 Professional Disc Golf Association Tour Season

Can this truly be called a Haters Guide? Well, ask yourself. Are there haters? I see haters. Is this a guide? I see a guide. So shut up and enjoy the shitposting, because it's not like there's much better going on unless you're in a hockey town or REALLY into baseball and even then, things might still be looking shit (looking at you Detroit.)

What is Disc Golf?

Disc Golf is the XFL to regular golf's NFL. Most of the stuff you like about the original, minus lot of the stuff you hate, and traditionalists need not apply.
The players? Forget all the stuffy St. Andrews shit, t-shirts khakis and sneakers are fine. The gear? Forget bulky bags and exploited caddies, grab a backpack and you're all set. The pricetag? How does top of the line discs at $25 and greens fees of nothing strike you? The broadcast? Half an hour for the front 9, half an hour for the back, only watching the players at the top that you give a shit about. The commentators? Active touring pros who don't just know the course, they're PLAYING in the tournament they do commentary for. (Example: Round 1 on Friday, comms for round 1 on Saturday morning, then an afternoon tee time for round 2, and so on) The viewing experience? We've got all the tech - hole layout drone footage, slow mo shots, shot tracers, live scoring, you name it. The courses? A beautiful mix of lush open fairways, treacherous rough where the grass goes up to your waist, looming water hazards, and stalwart trees all standing between you and the basket. Sure these guys make it LOOK easy, slinging discs a mile with a casual flick of the wrist and curling them around trees like a goddamned Wanted sequel, but it's nowhere as easy as they make it look - that's why they're pros.

The Schedule

Every week there are dozens of Disc Golf tournaments around the world. But like regular golf, we don't give a shit about most of them because they're at amateur courses for amateur players. (I say this not as a jab against the Ams, they're still shitloads better than me. But B-tier and C-tier events aren't what this Hater's Guide is about.)
In terms of tournaments we DO give a shit about, there's 20 of them: eleven Disc Golf Pro Tour events, (marked with the [DGPT] tag below) six PDGA National Tour Events, and four Major Championships.

DGPT Disc Golf Pro Tour Championship October 16-18 Charlotte, NC
If you're not the kind to go and watch people throw frisbees live, coverage for these tournaments will be found across youtube - JomezPro has been tapped to provide Lead Card coverage for all of the listed events except for the European Open. (TheSpinTV is likely to pick up that one) Second and Third card coverage will be provided by other channels like TheSpinTV and Central Coast Disc Golf. If you ARE the kind to go and watch people throw frisbees live (SeatGeek will not help you here, sorry ad buyers) you'll quickly get addicted. Or maybe weirded out. One of the two.

The Players

Right, the part of the Hater's Guide anyone gives a fuck about. Sorry it took a while, but I have to expect that most of you know about as much about disc golf as I did this time last year, which was fuckall. Obviously there's hundreds of players in each tournament field and it would be impossible to cover all of them, so let's just skip to the people we can reasonably expect to bring home hardware this year. Obviously I can't discount an unknown having a breakout year, but the stars are stars for a reason so let's stick to them.

Paul McBeth - Discraft
Ladies and Gentlemen, if you want either a perennial favorite to cheer on a la Tiger Woods, or a villain who exemplifies everything wrong with the sport a la...Tiger Woods, look no further than Disc Golf's Reigning GOAT. In 2019 McBeth made history, leaving Innova lured by an unheard of 4 year, $250,000/year sponsorship offer by their chief rival. He rewarded them by winning two majors bringing his total to TWELVE, shooting an 18-under par round for the SECOND time (no other disc golfer has accomplished the feat on the national stage) and having one of the most dominant years in recent history. In 2020 he's primed to continue his reign, though he did suffer a foot injury over the winter and just recently was able to walk without a boot. He should be fine, but injuries have bitten PMcB before - time will tell how he bounces back.

Ricky Wysocki - Innova Champion Discs
If McBeth is the Tiger Woods of disc golf, then Ricky is the closest you get to Phil Mickelson. Charismatic, incredibly talented, has a reputation for choking away titles he's got no business choking away, among his most recent the 2019 European Open where he had a 4-stroke lead going into the final round over McBeth - it didn't hold. That said, he's an incredibly gifted athlete and has shown his fair share of resilience - carding a +8 in the first round of the 2019 world championships and still bouncing back to get second place for example. (losing by a stroke to, who else? Paul) If there's any opportunity for the raptor to pounce, don't be surprised if he does it.

Simon Lizotte - Discmania
If you give no fucks about rivalries and sponsorship drama and just want to see long bombs, may I introduce you to the German wunderkind. Eight hundred feet from tee to green? No problem, that's maybe two shots on a slow day. Five hundred feet? Hmm...let's use a fucking PUTTER, that should be the right distance. He always puts up strong performances, and he's due for a few big wins on tour - the 2019 Portland Open slipped away on the 72nd hole, so you can be sure he's hungry for it.

Eagle McMahon - Discmania
The United States and obsession with one-upsmanship -name me a better duo. Easily able to match Simon with not only the crazy distance, but the crazy lines needed to get those absurd shots to actually work. While he's been known for stupid distance, the 2019 season showed that he's added another potent weapon to his game: finesse and touch. He's also got grit, playing the last round of the USDGC with a broken finger and still putting up a solid number - but his true test will be in his ability to keep it together. That broken finger? Self-inflicted when he punched his putter after a missed tap-in. That PDXO win that Simon choked away? Eagle got into a playoff, then blew it by throwing his tee shot out of bounds on the first sudden death hole. There's a high ceiling here, but will he keep himself in check to reach it?

James Conrad - Innova Champion Discs
The Man of A Thousand Putters, James has been a staple on tour for some time, finally claiming his first major in 2019 with a very overdue USDGC victory. With that monkey off his back, expect 2020 to be much of his same style of disc golf - calm throwing, calculated aggression, and nailing tight lines through the woods that can stop the rest of the field cold. And after all the close calls last year, the man is due for an Ace on the national tour - don't be surprised if Sportscenter gets a call.

Kevin Jones - Prodigy Discs
Prodigy is not the biggest manufacturer, and they have something of a reputation among the community that their players always seem to do better once they leave. KJUSA is the biggest star they have, and while he's been...pretty good under their deal, he's not shown some of the flashes of brilliance that people have expected. He's definitely got the talent, but if this season turns flat again, we could have another scramble in the free agent market.

Emerson Keith - Latitude 64 Discs
Emerson came out of nowhere in 2018 as a massive tournament grinder, playing SIXTY-SEVEN sanctioned tournaments during that tour season - many of them smaller B-tier or C-tier events, but it clearly worked for him as he capped off 2019 with a very impressive 4th place finish at Worlds, leading for the first three rounds before finally running out of steam against Paul and Ricky. He's still young, and another big charge at a big tournament title in 2020 should be seen as much more likely than not. Sleep on this kid at your own risk.

Nate Sexton & "Big" Jeremy Koling - Innova Champion Discs
The pairing of "Big Sexy" has been the leading voice of disc golf the past few years as the primary commentary crew for JomezPro and will be this year as well. Both long time veterans of the sport, they still have the arm speed and power to crush shots and hit tight gaps. Nate proved this by winning the Las Vegas Classic last week by two strokes, and Jeremy tied for second at the USDGC last year, losing to James by a stroke. Whether they're in the booth or on the course, it's never a bad video when they're in it.

Brodie Smith - Discraft
Yes, THAT Brodie Smith. The trick shot artist, ultimate frisbee magician, Basically-Sixth-Wheel-of-Dude-Perfect Brodie Smith. He's been picked up by Discraft on a one-year sponsor's exemption, and while I can't say I EXPECT anything out of him, the dude knows frisbees inside and out, so most of the skills should transfer pretty decently. Frankly I would expect him to stay around the B-tier events, maybe pop up for the occasional A-Tier and NT, but who knows? Maybe we'll see some Dark Horse Magic. Just...you know, don't bet on it.

Paige Pierce - Discraft
Yes she's the only woman on this list. No, she's not the only woman out on the course - the Woman's professional disc golf scene is just as vibrant and competitive as the male side, and to imply otherwise would be a grave offense to their skill and dedication. They just don't get the same airtime, whether that's warranted or right is a question I'll leave to non-shitposters. What is warranted is respect for Paige's ability to hang with the big boys, matching them with position and sound play even if she isn't the biggest bomber. Discraft recognized that, and rewarded the five-time world champion with a new contract to pry her away from Dynamic Discs - allegedly the same 4x250 they gave five-time world champion Paul Mcbeth last year. I'm not saying she'll reward them with the same dominance he did...but I wouldn't be shocked if she did.

If you've been paying attention, you'll notice that yes, as I upload this the first round of the first of these 20 tournaments is live underway. Videos for round one will probably be up tomorrow afternoon, or you can use the UDisc app to check scorecards in real time. Or if you're not in a frozen over tundra, use the app to see if there's a disc golf course near you. Who knows? You probably won't be an overnight star, but you might just find a cheap hobby to get you out of the house when the Yinzer's away.

Sports Betting Revenues Falling Short of States’ Expectations

Legalized sports betting has failed to generate the revenue expected in Rhode Island. The state initially budgeted for $23.5 million in gambling related revenues for the fiscal year ending in June 2019 (began in Nov. ’18). The target was lowered to $11.5 million in January, but R.I. lottery officials are reporting that the state has posted just 1.3% of that total ($150,000) to date. Governor Gina Raimondo attributed the shortfall to “a little bit [of a] later start than we thought”; wagering volume ($250 million anticipated vs. $813 million projected) and gambler performance (better than expected) have also forced the need for a rebalancing of the budget. While it’s all but assured that Rhode Island will fall short of January’s revamped projection, it should experience significant revenue growth in 2020; Raimondo signed a bill last week that will permit online sports betting within the state.
Howie Long-Short: The Patriots Super Bowl win contributed to a tough February for Rhode Island’s sportsbooks – the pair lost a combined $890,000 on $20.7 million in wagers during the month. They’re off to a better start in March, having raked in +/- $1 million over the first weekend of the NCAA tournament. The state is entitled to 51% of sports betting revenues (after expenses).
Rhode Island is certainly not a proxy for the country – it has just 2 licensed casinos – but “most of the states” that have passed legislation since PASPA was struck down have fallen short of projections. It’s certainly no coincidence that like Rhode Island, all but New Jersey (which out-earned Nevada for the 1st time in Jan.) failed to establish mobile/online as an option.
Rhode Island’s 2020 budget assumes sports betting will bring in $30.3 million in revenue, including $3 million in mobile fees. Democratic Senate President Dominick Ruggerio has acknowledged that the financial forecasts will need to be rebalanced (see: lowered) in the wake of fiscal 2019 results, but the nominal revenue Raimondo attributed to mobile – relative to the total income projected – makes me think they’re still getting bad “information” (or that they simply don’t understand the marketplace). New Jersey sportsbooks generated 80% of their January revenue from mobile and online platforms.
Once Twin Rivers begins taking online/mobile bets, business will pick up. It will become easier for residents of the state to place wagers and with Massachusetts yet to legalize sports betting, the Rhode Island licensee should pick up some action from residents of the neighboring state (via the William Hill app). For reference purposes, FanDuel claims 9% of its New Jersey business comes from those living in New York and another 4% from those based in Pennsylvania. The 2020 budget assumes mobile sports betting will be available next winter, but there’s a current push within the Assembly to have it in place by the start of the NFL season.
Rhode Island’s 2 casinos (Lincoln and Tiverton) are owned by Twin River Worldwide Holdings. On Friday, the company (which also owns the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Biloxi, MS) “added to its geographic base” closing on the purchase of Dover Downs Gaming & Entertainment. Shares of Twin River common stock subsequently began trading (at $29) on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol TRWH.
Fan Marino: 75% of those who placed bets (against the spread) on the Super Bowl at Rhode Island’s 2 brick and mortar casinos took the hometown Patriots; as a result, the pair lost $2.3 million on the game. It’s not atypical for a sportsbook to take a loss on a big game – like the Super Bowl – when the hometown team covers. Fans bet with their hearts and the action tends to skew “towards the geographically favored team.” The books don’t move the lines to reflect the heavy action though, because doing so would leave them susceptible to sharp money (going the other way) taking advantage of mispriced odds.
