If you watch the ML (Morning Line), you can quickly order the favorites of a race. 80% of your winners come from the top four ML favorites (and you don’t need a racing form to find the ML). Make a note of top jockeys and top trainers, especially those teaming up with the same horse. Your top plays should offer value – in other words, a horse you think has a much better chance to win than his morning-line odds when planning, or live odds when betting, indicate. If you think a horse has a 25% chance to win and the odds are 5-1, that’s value. If you think a horse has a 10% to 15% chance to win and you get 15-1 to 20-1 ... Betting on a horse race can be one of the most exhilarating experiences for any sports bettor. You do not have to be a professional handicapper to have a winning day at the track. Of all the modern-day anachronisms one can find at the race track, the morning-line odds deserve a place near the top of the list. The morning-line odds are the odds printed in the program or in the newspaper alongside the entries in the race. They are set by a track employee, usually a handicapper but not always, and are supposed to represent how that individual believes the betting will ... Of course. As part of my own handicapping I look to determine if a favorite is strong or vulnerable. I do this through two steps. The first is to determine what kind of morning line favorite is in the race, weak or strong. I then use seven race and horse specific factors that determine the likelihood of the favorite winning the race.
