eToro: impressions, doubts and (ignored) lessons from copy trading
(no promotional content, no affiliate links) Hi, exactly four years ago, I started copying eToro investors / traders that I selected using the broker's built-in search engine (profitable in last two years, already being copied by others), followed by manual filtering, to take into account fluctuations in yearly returns, composition of their portfolios etc. With that, I got a list of 10 people whom I started to copy on a demo account: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1u52f0XHfr-LauIscKcFDYF0yGTTUr6VY/view?usp=sharing In the screenshot you can see that in case of the first two of them the amount invested was $10,000, while for the rest it was just $100. This is because I started copying the first two a couple of weeks earlier; eventually I changed this into $100 the same day I made the screenshot and this is when my calculations start - so this thing is irrelevant, I just cannot travel in time to make another screenshot. What I did after that? Well, within the next six weeks my profits oscillated between -$11 and +$9.50 (the biggest profit was on Nov 9, a day after US presidential elections). I found this "boring" and discontinued experimenting with copy trading. Today I looked back at those ten traders. Here is what I found. Firstly, seven of them are not with eToro anymore; investorNo1, Simple-Stock-Mkt, tradingrelax, 4exPirate, primit, Gallojack, xjurokx. The other three traders are:
toppertrader: not being copied by anyone and for a good reason: his loss this year alone is 61.16%!
Jean-marcLenfant: copied by only 67 people; his loss this year is -1.09% but in general he is quite successful, with yearly profits ranging from 3.57% to 7.32%.
Girem2: he has no copiers, his profit this year is 41.45% but in 2018 he experienced a loss of 83.15%!
My observations and thoughts are as follows:
Seven out of ten traders are not with eToro anymore, which makes me wonder why. I have no proof but my guess is they simply performed poorly, lost their copiers and closed their accounts. This is already alarming but what if they opened another account? Or, even worse, multiple accounts? They could be investing small money and try different risky approaches, hoping that at least one account will turn out profitable in the long turn, attracting potential copiers. (I'm not claiming that those 7 particular traders did this, it's just my general suspicion regarding some of eToro traders)
I'm unable to calculate what would be my profit if I never stopped copying them, because I cannot check at what day and with what profit those seven traders left eToro. I'm guessing this would be an immense loss. On the other hand, considering the three traders who are still with eToro, I would lose more than a quarter of my assets!
What now? I must be a quite adventurous person or at least an incorrigible optimist, because a month ago (exactly on Aug 26th) I started copying three traders with real money. Here is who they are. rubymza (Heloise Greeff)
invests in stocks, with GOOG, INTC, BLDP, MA, MSFT, AMZN, V, MU, IBM and NXPI making up 50.3% of her portfolio (allocation of each of them is in between 3.02% and 6.85%)
active since 2016 (only the year 2016 ended with a loss)
has 3044 copiers and $2M-$5M of copy assets under management
strategy (her own words): "My investing strategy focusses mostly on US indices, tech and pharma, promising future (5-10years) growth. My trades are based on technical analysis using machine learning to understand patterns and trends in the markets. I prefer to keep a diverse portfolio to spread risk while achieving great returns."
he is a Forex trader, making typically 21 trades per week; his favorite currency pairs are EURCHF (12% of trades), CADCHF and GBPUSD; the trades, however, typically make up below 5% of his portfolio (at least whenever I'm checking it), making most of my funds unused
active since January 2017: surprisingly enough, he has every single month profitable, though monthly profits are in the range of 0.03% to 3.34% only
has 8977 copiers and more than $5M of copy assets under management
strategy (his own words): "I monitor currency pairs all day to find the best entry. There is some management/scaling position for perfect entry. The risk control is a big part of my strategy," (quite vague, to be honest)
commodities compose 76% of his portfolio and his favorite assets are Gold and Oil (at the moment, Gold makes up half of invested amount)
active since July 2016, with the following yearly profits, starting from 2016: 6.56%, 10.05%, 13.09%, 32.26% and -2.03% (the current year)
has 1493 copiers and $1M-$2M of copy assets under management
strategy (his own words): "My system is based on patterns, and a variety of technical analysis tools and some fundamental analysis. I primarily trade in commodities. " (quite vague as well)
own experience: my profit with rayvahey is 2.56%
What was my strategy to hand-pick these particular traders? First I did some basic scanning using eToro's built-in search engine. The most important filter was that the trader was profitable within the last two years: unfortunately, eToro does not allow to reach details of earlier performance automatically. To know how the trader performed before 2019, I had to look at stats in the profile of each of them. I was also taking into account how often they trade (to avoid those who do only a couple of trades yearly), whether they were trading recently and whether they write posts regularly in their feed. With this, I got a list of fifteen candidates to copy:
olivierdanvel
marianopardo
rubymza
rayvahey
martidg97
overit
misterg23
knw500
jianswang
reinhardtcoetzee
miyoshi
alderique
jarodd76
benson9904
big-profits
As you already know, I finally chose three of them. Rubymza seemed to be the most trustworthy stock trader, based on profits, posts feed and regular trading, among other things. Regarding OlivierDanvel, his uniqueness is the ability to record continuous profits with the Forex market. Finally, with rayvahey I wanted to increase my exposure to the commodities market. Wish me good luck! Michael P.S. You might find those copy-trading related readings interesting:
Hi! I'm new to FOREX and I'm interested to invest a little amount for now. Are 200 euros enough as a starting investment? Furthermore, what broker should I get? I hope you can recommend me some brokers with cheapelower spreads/commissions. Lastly, is it possible to trade with just copying the trades of other traders? Who are legit and easy to follow? Thank you in advance!

Hey guys, So next year I'm enrolling in university and I plan to invest in Forex as well, my goal, right now, is to use the profit to pay my tuition (as much as I can). I've been doing demo trading for 8 months now. Has anyone ever done this? Studying and investing at the same time? What tips can you give? Thanks for your help!
Hello there, I am new to Forex ! I have studied much stuff these last days and I am starting to grasp the principles. I'm practicing it on a demo account too. I think I may go live really soon. I also like to compute the position size detailed in FAQ. For example, if I want to risk max $5 with a stop loss of 10 pips, I should put a position of 0.05 lots ==> 5000 units. This works well and has been confirmed by my tries on demo. I practiced a bit on eToro. But I read here it has a really bad reputation so I tried Pepperstone and I like it very much (the spreads are MUCH better, hehe, 3 pips is just insane). However, Pepperstone has a 1:500 leverage, where eToro had something like 1:30. Yet I fail to see the difference in my positions. This worries me... It seems that leverage should be taken into account in computing my risks, yet I can't see it... How should I look at this ? Thanks again for this amazing sub !
I'm stuck about the right place and time to enter trades
Hi Everyone, I've been in Forex on and off for several years, with numerous demos and two live accounts. I'd like some advise, but first I'll tell you all a bit so you'll know where I am in my Forex journey. 1) After doing some courses to learn, My first live account was with etoro in 2012. Demo was excellent but the real account was a disaster. I think etoro screwed my account because I was literally sitting and staring at my screen when 8 different trades opened for themselves, and in a couple minutes wiped 80% of my money. This literally happened in about 5 minutes and I wasn't even touching my computer to do anything. I have never in my life opened 8 trades at once, which is why I suspect that they screwed me. As I said this was in 2012. 2) My second live account was with Hotforex in 2013. Demo was going well and I made a live account after. I was successfully making small trades with small profits mostly using 3sma system combined with trendlines and some support and resistance levels. Then a family tragedy happened, and I needed money, so I withdrew money from my live account and closed it. 3) From 2014 - 2017/ early 2018 I've mostly been on the move and off the grid (for personal reasons). Now I'm back in the regular world, need something to do and I'm looking at Forex again. You may ask why I'm considering Forex and not a regular job? Because I have a large number of health problems including chronic pain, which means I don't have enough strength for a regular job. Since my mind is good, I figured Forex could work, since I actually did it for a while in the past. I'm not looking to get rich, if I make $ 300 a month that's good enough for me. 4) For the last 2 months I've been trading a demo with Oanda. It's not going to well. I find that the same strategy I was using back in 2013 is not working anymore. Mostly because the setup for such trades is idealistic and doesn't happen often. 5) I've been experimenting with price movements and I am now at a stage where I can more or less predict which way the market will go. However this leaves me with 2 problems. A) The price does move where I expect it to, sometimes in 5 minutes, and sometimes in 5 hours. This also depends on the timeframe used. B) Because of the uncertainty of time in (A), I am having confusion on where and when to actually enter my trades in to the market. I don't know of the last part makes sense to you all. But if it does, please offer some advise or links that you may have. Thanks!

INTRODUCTION There is no gainsaying that the invention of Blockchain technology has sprout the interest of many people in crypto currency, this has created the need for more user friendly crypto exchanges where investors can trade their coin/token seamlessly. Crypto currencies exchange is the widest platform to buy and sell coins and although exchanges constantly evolve and improve, there are challenges and problems that must be critically looked into. It is against this backdrop I deem it fit to review Nebula Crypto Exchange project. Nebula exchange is a centralized exchange platform that deals on cryptocurrency exchange and tends to blend the crypto trading platform with updated news, technical analyses from various experts and review from users for a refined trading experience. We believe that users that are just coming into the trade need information beyond the price and volume of cryptocurrencies and we are set to provide them with all the necessary information required to make concrete decisions on investment on cryptocurrencies and appreciate the trade while making huge profits on their investments. PROBLEMS OF TRADITIONAL CRYPTO EXCHANGES Lack of liquidity is pushing volatility been the biggest problems facing cryptocurrency exchanges is an endemic lack of liquidity. The lack of liquidity, in turn, makes it hard for traders and investors to exit the market at profitable prices. When trading cryptocurrency, traders often have to up their sale and wait for the order to be filled. However, the fact that many exchanges don’t have a reserve pool means that traders must wait until there’s a willing buyer on the network before their order is filled. Hence, many traders often find themselves trapped in the market beyond the timing of their exit signal. Transaction Delays Another common complaint of cryptocurrency trading is the delays in almost every transaction. Most platforms are slow to use, all the way from registering an account to making a sale. Most trades need to be mined for a trade to go through, which raises costs for people even higher, on top of the commissions the platforms make to stay in business. As more individuals join the blockchain, it gets slower, and exchanges are regularly stuck in the line sitting tight for endorsement. This at that point means speculators and makes the entire procedure troublesome and unrewarding for each dealer. Exchange delays are only a portion of the various issues that Price Manipulation Another name for price control is purchase dividers and offer dividers, which are begun by a gathering of people in the crypto showcase, alluded to as whales. In crypto exchanging, price control is the main source of the unpredictability of crypto markets. New financial specialists dependably appear to be on the wrong end of this movement. Numerous unpracticed individuals won't have the capacity to peruse the indications of the purchase divider, and rather, consider it to be a positive cost. Driven by obliviousness and defective rationale, numerous will imagine that the cost will expand, so they race to purchase. Lamentably, this inevitably prompts more weight on little time financial specialists, who think that its difficult to enter the market at a particular value run. While the whales, or huge speculators, can do the control of the market without spending excessively cash. At the point when the price moves in a whale's support, the whale would then be able to move their position and move the value run once more. Forex And Binary Another issue with digital currency exchanging is the issue of Forex and Binary choices. At the present minute, numerous Forex organizations like EToro and FXPro have recorded crypto exchanging as a possibility for their stages. These crypto postings regularly accompany a get rich speedy mindset that draws a great many unpracticed financial specialists, who at that point wind up losing the majority of their cash inside minutes. Sadly, most forex merchants neglect to comprehend that forex financiers don't take into account the open market. Rather, they go after the benefits of clueless speculators, who utilize them as counterparty. While a few merchants trust that administrations manage the Forex advertise, regularly they overlook that the controller basically tosses in a disclaimer, which adds up to simply only a couple of expressions of caution. Fake News Fake news is an extreme issue for cryptographic forms of money, as these stories can be grabbed by editors in online networking channels and dispersed to a colossal gathering of people. Regularly, these stories are not reality checked and may even contain purposeful mistakes to influence the general's sentiment about a specific kind of coin.
