Twitter - Often the best place for team news. If you put some work in following the right people for your sport, you twitter can pay off. I don't actually have any good sports specific follows to shout-out though. There are also decent sports bettors who post their picks if you're in to tailing.
whoscored.com - Lots of stats, and they use opta data which most betting sites also use. Gives most accurate rendition of stats vis-a-vis matching your sportsbook.
BASKETBALL:
https://stats.nba.com/teams/advanced/ -the NBA website tracks basic advanced stats. I mostly use it to check off/def ratings, what pace team are playing at and how teams will match up on grabbing rebounds, but it's pretty customizable and I imagine could be used for more
https://www.teamrankings.com/ - also a good site for free granular stats. Covers most American sports. I don't use it too much but I probably should.
Dunc'd on podcast and the Lowe Post -Probably the 2 most informative podcasts when it comes to keeping up with the league
rotowire and rotoworld for team line-ups
REQUEST: I'd love to know some basketball blogs that preview games from an X and Os match-up, or data perspective, even if it's only specific to one team.
Downvote me all you want, but there is too much negativity in the world right now and this sub is about as Bi-Polar as they come. Here’s my take after calming down.
Super Bowl this, Super Bowl that. Sip sip sip. Now something bad happens and everyone’s off the fucking wagon. Jesus Christ calm down. Shit happens. Stop focusing on the bad, alls that does is ruin your week/ends. Breathe. Calm down and breathe. Look at it objectively. The first 4 games we all agreed were going to be tough. After the first week of NFL football we have some takeaways for those teams. The Vikings D has regressed. A lot. The offense didn’t look particularly we either. The score didn’t look awful because they scored with 1:21 left. A Vikings fan should check in because I know they lurk. AZ was a grindy ass game and their offense didn’t look incredibly good. They also faced a SF offense that is in trouble. The 49’ers shit the bed in more ways then one. Go to their sub, it’s a dumpster fire. Much like ours. NOLA didn’t do shit. Look at the stats. Sub 200 yards passing and Sub 90 yards rushing. TB is just bad. The ST is atrocious and Brady is 43 years old and proved Jameis wasn’t the issue. Was this loss frustrating for the lions and fans. Yes. Did I overreact to seeing a collapse. Yes. Am I still frustrated, yes. BUT now that I have calmed down and looked at it rationally. We played our no. 2, 5 , 6, 7 CB’s, we lost Collins to bullshit * read the refs words, dude flopped worse than an NBA player. That was a complete overreaction, Collins was trying to explain the runner led with the crown of his helm which is a penalty btw We lost our starting RT, and No. 1 wideout. Golladay not being in the lineup hurt us about as much as 4 of our corners leaving the game. Things for optimism are: our defense was solid the first 3 quarters before the CBs legs snapped. (Strength and conditioning coach probably needs to be questioned here) the play calling was conservative to say the least. Fox the punter is a stud. Found a replacement for Martin. AD looks like a man possessed and you bet your ass he’s getting on this entire team about what happened today. A veteran leader with Stafford getting on everyone will only help. We had a pass rush for much of the game. Okwara also left the game in the third. Overall the offensive line was decent. Not bad, but not great. They held up. Besides the forced pass, Stafford was smart with the ball. The deflection literally went straight up into the air (fucking oof) The first 4 games were never going to be easy. You also have to remember the Chicago D ranked 9th last year overall. We still did incredibly well against their stacked ass D with conservative play calling and no Golladay. A few things to round this out. Kerryon needs to be #3 on the depth chart. AD > Swift > Kerryon. The play calling; both offense and defense CANNOT go into conservative mode. Foot on the gas all game. Now was this because they were missing a few players, with no preseason and concerns over injury’s. It could. There is no doubt about it. But play calling especially for Bevell needs to be more aggressive. It will get better though, I have faith in that. With the defensive injuries, I might give a pass here. Our bench CB’s couldn’t keep up in man or in zone. It was extremely obvious. The goal post is a fucking traitor. Tavai getting the offsides is most definitely on him. No one else. You can coach until your face is blue, players still have to make plays / execute. Of course the coach is going to be called into question but it’s still on the players. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk. If you are going to respond to this post, PLEASE I BEG OF YOU, have constructive feedback.

Lester's Breakdown - The 102-96 victory on Tuesday puts the Lakers one win away from a championship. LeBron James dominated Miami's weaker defenders, using pick-and-rolls to finish with 28 points on 8-for-16 shooting, plus 12 rebounds and eight assists. Davis had 22 points on 8-for-16 shooting, with nine rebounds, four assists and four blocks. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had 15 points on 6-for-12 shooting, including a crucial layup late in the fourth quarter. Los Angeles took a 3-1 lead despite the return of Bam Adebayo. The Heat center had 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting and seven rebounds in 33 minutes in his first game back from a neck injury. Jimmy Butler had 22 points on 8-for-17 shooting, with eight assists, 10 rebounds and three steals. Miami was down by two points with three minutes left, then Butler missed a 3 and Caldwell-Pope hit a 3 in transition. The Heat shot 11 for 32 from 3-point range and just couldn't get it done. Game 5 is Friday and Lester has 3 takeaways from Tuesday night's action: Through 3 quarters, the Heat were shooting like a bunch of beach bum basketball boys (22 for 57, and 6 for 25 from deep), they made 22 out 24 free throws, as if the refs weren't responsible for that...yeah right...and they played their defensive game like they were getting bullied before lunch. Los Angeles had not done much damage in transition or on the offensive glass, and had shot just 7 for 9 from the free throw line, hitting 3s (12 for 28) and making Miami work. After a messy first quarter, the Lakers had cleaned up their turnover issues. The fourth quarter, was a different story, The Heat went just 1 for 2 from the line, and the Lakers went 11 for 12 -- LBJ made all 7 of his attempts.

[OC] we always ask "what lineup would you use to beat the aliens?" but we never ask "WHICH aliens?" And with that in mind, I present the proper alien-fighting lineup for all scenarios
During the offseason, we tend to float silly hypotheticals around here. One of the most common for redditors and real writers like Bill Simmons alike is: "What lineup would you use to beat the aliens?" Essentially, we're trying to suggest the BEST LINEUP on Earth, using the conceit of an alien invasion as a mere prop for that discussion. But aliens deserve more respect than that. We can't just lump "aliens" all together, because no two alien invaders are exactly alike. So rather than suggest a lineup against "the aliens," I'm going to suggest specific lineups against 10 specific alien species. So welcome, my friends and fellow bored fans, to --
THE GALAXY CUP
LITTLE GREEN MEN ALIENS PG: Russell Westbrook (HOU) SG: Jimmy Butler (MIA) SF: Aaron Gordon (ORL) PF: Zion Williamson (NO) C: Joel Embiid (PHI) the game plan We start the tournament against our traditional rival, the classic "Little Green Men" (of Area 51 and Roswell fame.) And since these are little green men, our intention is to beat them with a big lineup and a "bully ball" approach. Spacing? Who needs spacing? Our plan is to live in the paint and dominate on the glass. We want a blowout victory to set the tone for the rest of the tournament, with some Zion Williamson dunking and some Joel Embiid cackling to hammer the point home. E.T. ALIENS PG: Mike Conley (UTA) SG: J.J. Redick (NO) SF: Andre Iguodala (MEM) PF: Kevin Love (CLE) C: Al Horford (PHI) the game plan While we wanted to humiliate the Little Green Men, we don't have the same type of animosity against the lovable aliens from E.T.'s planet. In fact, we want as respectful and diplomatic of a lineup as possible. Mike Conley would set the friendly tone with his tech-free approach, while media darlings J.J. Redick, Andre Iguodala, and Kevin Love could handle the clean communication. Even our center Al Horford will refuse to take advantage and pad his stats. INDEPENDENCE DAY ALIENS PG: Ben Simmons (PHI) SG: Manu Ginobili (SA) SF: Robert Covington (MIN) PF: Pascal Siakam (TOR) C: Rudy Gobert (UTA) the game plan The cold-hearted Independence Day aliens (similar to War of the World aliens) are our toughest opponent yet. They're not here to mess around -- they want to come down, fuck shit up, and conquer. Their patented style of play is an aggressive offense that will attack at a moment's notice. Given that, building a strong defensive wall will be critical for us. Like a young Will Smith, Ben Simmons be the rising superstar to lead our team into battle, drawing in an alliance from all over the world (with 5 separate continents represented in the lineup.) Is it a mistake to give the over-the-hill Manu Ginobili one of those spots? Maybe. But you can't beat these Harvesters with brawn alone; the crafty Ginobili can be our Jeff Goldblum and figure out the hole in the aliens' defense. INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS ALIENS PG: J.J. Barea (DAL) SG: Isaiah Thomas (WAS) SF: Joe Ingles (UTA) PF: Nemanja Bjelica (SAC) C: Nikola Jokic (DEN) the game plan Once again, we have to utilize our craftiness to beat an opponent. The Invasion of the Body Snatchers would surely try to swap some bodies, so we will give them the worst "bodies" we can find. Either limited by height (J.J. Barea and I.T.), or athleticism (like Nikola Jokic), the Body Snatchers would be befuddled by their physical limitations. Meanwhile, our high-IQ and highly-skilled players could still thrive no matter what physical vessel they may inhabit. STRANGER THINGS ALIENS PG: De'Aaron Fox (SAC) SG: Luka Doncic (DAL) SF: Jayson Tatum (BOS) PF: Jaren Jackson Jr. (MEM) C: Draymond Green (GS) the game plan The Demogorgon from Strangers Things isn't necessarily an alien from outer space, but it comes from a different plane in the Upside-Down and is hence an "alien" to our world. And while it's quite dangerous (kinda?), these monsters clearly have trouble keeping up with young legs. To that end, we wanted a youthful team featuring players like Jayson Tatum and Jaren Jackson Jr. Meanwhile, Slovenian wunderkind Luka Doncic has the "Eleven"-like magic touch, while Draymond Green will fulfill our Hopper role of being the veteran punchekicker who will get wildly angry from time to time for no apparent reason. DISTRICT 9 ALIENS PG: Lonzo Ball (NO) SG: Markelle Fultz (ORL) SF: Andre Roberson (OKC) PF: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (CHA) C: Bismack Biyombo (CHA) the game plan (Spoiler alert!) but the "prawns" from District 9 turn out to be far less aggressive and threatening than their appearance may lead you to believe. Sure, we need a sensible and respectful defense, but we don't need to aggravate tension. Our instructions to our team are clear: "don't shoot!" As long as we keep a roster of reluctant shooters in tow, the prawns should ultimately realize that their hearts are not in this tournament and start their retreat. PACIFIC RIM ALIENS PG: Matthew Dellavedova (CLE) SG: James Harden (HOU) SF: Rui Hachimura (WAS) PF: Yi Jianlian (CHINA) C: Steven Adams (OKC) the game plan As we get deeper into the tournament, the level of competition steps up a few notches. Combating the alien monsters from Pacific Rim represents a tall task: literally. We're talking about kaiju who may run over 300 feet. You're not going to overwhelm this team physically, so we need intangibles. We need soldiers who are going to display teamwork, grit, and the determination to protect their Pacific Ocean home turf. How are we actually going to win, though? How will this particular team score? Good question. James Harden will have to do the lion's share of the work by drawing and exaggerating contact (which should be frequent.) And for all we criticize Harden, he is the rare player with Jaeger-like body armor to take those hits and keep on chugging. If we can get him 40+ free throws, this game may be winnable after all. XENOMORPH ALIENS (from the Aliens franchise) PG: Marcus Smart (BOS) SG: Elena Delle Donne (WAS) SF: Kawhi Leonard (LAC) PF: James Johnson (MIA) C: Marshall Plumlee (USA) the game plan On paper, the xenomorphs appear to be one of the fiercest and scariest matchups in the field. Fortunately, there's been a clear template to combat them. You start with a group of tough and rugged soldiers – Marcus Smart, James Johnson, and Marshall Plumlee (who had literally signed up for the Marine Corps already) – and add one wildcard cyborg to the mix (in Kawhi Leonard.) And of course, the key is anchoring the lineup with a strong female leader like Elena Delle Donne. In fact, she may be an even deadlier shot than Ripley. This past season for the Mystics, Delle Donne registered a 50/40/90 season, including 97% from the free throw line. PREDATOR ALIENS PG: Stephen Curry (GS) SG: Klay Thompson (GS) SF: Paul George (LAC) PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo (MIL) C: Karl-Anthony Towns (MIN) the game plan One of the most difficult opponents in the field and a betting favorite in Vegas, the Predators are going to be tough to beat. Not only are they fierce and ruthless killers who hunt for sport, they also possess superior intelligence, advanced technology/analytics, and unlike some others in the field: opposable thumbs. So how in the world can we beat a team like that? More wily tricks, of course. The Predators have heat vision, so our approach will be to surround the perimeter with great shooters who can get red "hot," draw the defense out, and allow the Greek Freak Giannis to sneak in and deliver the knockout blow. KRYPTONIAN ALIENS (a la Superman) PG: Damian Lillard (POR) SG: Bradley Beal (WAS) SF: Kevin Durant (BKN) PF: LeBron James (LAL) C: Anthony Davis (LAL) the game plan Yes, Superman is an alien, despite all appearances -- so maybe you should take a step back and consider your own biases regarding space lifeforms, huh. In fact, our intergalactic television partners are hyping up this contest as the marquee matchup in the entire field. They're blasting thousands of comet and asteroid advertisements across space with a simple marketing pitch: LeBron James vs. Superman!! Does LeBron James have a chance in that individual matchup? Of course not, you silly goose. LeBron is a great basketball player, but Superman is a virtual god. He has superhuman strength, X-ray vision, ice cold breath, and the literal ability to fly. In some ways, he is SO powerful and invulnerable that he's actually a little boring of a character. And therein lies our secret strategy. We'll sic LeBron's BFF Rich Paul (our Lex Luthor evil genius) to spread that message around the star system. Superman is boring. He's old news. His "Superman" franchise been stalling out. Meanwhile, the popularity of LeBron James and the NBA continues to soar. That's where the money is! Paul needs to convince the league, the refs, and those TV partners of ours to give Team Earth a little edge and some favorable calls. Because if we can rattle the Kryptonians early on, they're likely to start turning on each other and self-destructing. Just ask Jor-El.
My post yesterday seemed to have a positive response so I figured I'd post it as often as I can. In this thread I'll break down how watchable each game today on a scale of 1-10 by assigning a score to the competitiveness, importance, and the amount of star power in the game. Also I'm very happy the Knicks aren't playing today because apparently I pissed some of their fans off by not including Allonzo Trier as a star and forgetting Dave Fizdale's return to Memphis, sorry. Times are all Eastern Standard and the betting lines are from 11:30 AM. 7. Minnesota Timberwolves (9-11) vs. Cleveland Cavaliers (4-14) Time: 7:00 PM Where to Watch: League Pass Line: MIN: -6 *Previous Matchups: 10/19: MIN 131 CLE: 123 Injuries: MIN: None CLE: Sam Dekker (Questionable), George Hill (Out), JR Smith (Out), Kevin Love (Out) *Smith isn't injured but is no longer with the team Competitiveness: Cleveland has a 2 game winning streak at the moment beating Philadelphia and Houston. Cleveland still isn't a very good team and eventually they will fall back a bit but still they're hot at the moment. Minnesota has also put together back to back wins but they are only 1-8 on the road this season so it wouldn't shock me if this game is close. 7/10 Importance: Cleveland isn't going to make the playoffs and it'll be extremely difficult for Minnesota to make a run in the Western Conference despite them being a talented team. 2/10 Star Power: Karl-Anthony Towns is an elite center coming off of a monster 35/22/6 game in Chicago. It's unlikely KAT can repeat that performance but I still expect him to have a good night. Cleveland doesn't have a star with Love out but Collin Sexton has put up over 20 points in back to back games. 5/10 Who will win? Overall: 4.7/10 6. San Antonio Spurs (9-10) vs. Chicago Bulls (5-15) Time: 8:00 PM Where to Watch: League Pass Line: SAS: -6 Previous Matchups: None Injuries: SAS: Pau Gasol (Out), Lonnie Walker IV (Out) CHI: Kris Dunn (Out), Lauri Markkanen (Out), Bobby Portis (Out), Denzel Valentine (Out), Chandler Hutchison (Questionable) Competitiveness: The Bulls have been a bad team this year while San Antonio has hit a rough patch recently going 3-7 in their last 10. This is a good opportunity for San Antonio to get back on track with a win against a bad team. 5/10 Importance: Chicago won't make the playoffs this season but the Spurs have a chance to. San Antonio needs to put some wins together and winning games against teams like Chicago are a big part of that. 4.5/10 Star Power: If this game is close than the matchup between Zach LaVine and DeMar Derozan will be a very entertaining one to watch. LaVine has scored at least 20 points in all but two games this season while DeRozan is averaging 24.9 and coming off of a 34 point game. LaMarcus Aldridge has been inconsistent this season but the 6 time All-Star is always a candidate for a big game. 7.5/10 Who will win? Total: 5.7/10 T-5. Houston Rockets (9-9) vs. Washington Wizards (7-12) Time: 7:00 PM Where to Watch: NBA TV Line: HOU: -2.5 Previous Matchups: None Injuries: HOU: Nene (Out), Gerald Green (Questionable), Chris Paul (Questionable) WSH: Dwight Howard (Doubtful), John Wall (Questionable) Competitiveness: Both of these teams have had rough starts but both have seemed to recover a bit with the Wizards 5-5 in their last 10 and Houston 6-4 in their last 10. Houston has lost their last 2 games after piecing together a 5 game win streak. With the Wizards you never know what team is going to show up and they get blown out often. 6.5/10 Importance: Both of these teams need to turn their season's around soon if they want to live up to pre-season expectations which makes this a big game. the Wizards need to start winning to climb back into the playoff picture and Houston is stuck towards the bottom of the pack of the Western Conference meat grinder. 8/10 Star Power: Wall and Paul are both questionable tonight which could bring this rating down but if they both wind up playing this backcourt matchup will be very entertaining to watch with Wall and Beal vs. Paul and Harden. I'll bring the overall rating down a bit in case either Wall or CP3 don't play. 7.5/10 Who will win? Overall: 7.3/10 T-5. Indiana Pacers (11-8) vs. Utah Jazz (9-11) Time: 9:00 PM Where to Watch: League Pass Line: PK Previous Matchups: 11/19: IND 121 UTA 94 Injuries: IND: Victor Oladipo (Questionable), Domantas Sabonis (Questionable), Myles Turner (Questionable) UTA: Donovan Mitchell (Questionable) Competitiveness: This mostly banks on how many of Indiana's injured players wind up playing. Oladipo, Sabonis, and Turner are probably their 3 best players which kind of makes it hard to accurately judge this game. I'll aim for the middle here though and I think this game is very good if they play but if not than Utah could run away with it especially if Mitchell plays. 7.5/10 Importance: Not a hugely important game for Indiana especially if their stars don't end up playing but they could use a win to keep up with Detroit. Utah can't afford to lose right now as they look to claw back into the playoff picture out West. 7/10 Star Power: This category really depends on the injuries so I'm not going to grade it but if Mitchell and Oladipo end up playing that matchup will be very fun to watch. Rudy Gobert is a fun player to watch as well and Ricky Rubio is coming off a very good 27 point outing. ?/10 Who will win? Total: 7.3/10 3. Orlando Magic (10-10) vs. Golden State Warriors (14-7) Time: 10:30 Where to Watch: League Pass Line: GS: -8 Previous Matchups: None Injuries: ORL: None GS: DeMarcus Cousins (Out), Steph Curry (Out), Draymond Green (Questionable), Alfonzo McKinnie (Questionable) Competitiveness: Orlando has been surprisingly good this year and Golden State isn't as overwhelmingly good without Curry (and possibly Green). Orlando is in the 3rd game of a West coast swing and riding high off a win over the Lakers. 8/10 Importance: Golden State needs to win these games to finish with the top seed in the West but it doesn't really matter where they finish since they're winning the title regardless. Orlando needs to win to stay in the playoff picture. 8/10 Star Power: A little less without Curry and potentially Green but they still have the 2nd best player in the league in Durant who's coming off a massive 44/13/7 game against Sacramento. Nikola Vucevic is coming off a big 31/15/7 game in that win over the Lakers and Aaron Gordon is also an entertaining player to watch with his athleticism. 9/10 Who will win? Total: 8.3/10 2. Milwaukee Bucks (14-5) vs. Charlotte Hornets (9-10) Time: 7:00 PM Where to Watch: League Pass Line: MIL: -5 Previous Matchups: 10/17: MIL 113 CHA 112 Injuries: MIL: John Henson (Out), Donte DiVincenzo (Questionable), Ersan Ilyasova (Questionable) CHA: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (Questionable) Competitiveness: Charlotte's on a 2 game losing streak and coming off of a bad loss to the Hawks but Charlotte is still a talented team that doesn't get blown out often when they lose. Milwaukee is 2 games back of Toronto for the 1st seed of the East and I'd say this game should be good. 8.5/10 Importance: This is a good chance for Milwaukee to gain on Toronto but win or lose they'll still be the 2nd seed by the end of the night. This is a good chance for Charlotte to get a statement win and separate themselves from Brooklyn, Washington, and Miami. 8/10 Star Power: Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kemba Walker lead the way in this one. Milwaukee has held opposing PG's to 20.5 PPG which is one of the better averages in the NBA but the last time these two teams met Walker had 41 points. Personally Giannis is my favorite player to watch in the league right now and Kemba is also pretty high up there. 9/10 Who will win? Overall: 8.5/10 1. Boston Celtics (10-10) vs. New Orleans Pelicans (10-10) Time: 8:00 PM Where to Watch: League Pass Line: BOS: -1 Previous Matchups: None Injuries: BOS: Jaylen Brown (Out), Terry Rozier (Probable) NOP: Elfrid Payton (Out), Anthony Davis (Probable) Competitiveness: These two teams have the same record at the moment but neither has played well recently. New Orleans has dropped 3 in a row while Boston has lost 4 of their last 5, this game should be decently close however as they are both solid teams. 8.5/10 Importance: Very important game for both teams. Boston should be towards the top of the East but just haven't clicked yet this year while New Orleans had a hot start but has cooled as of late. New Orleans is currently the 8 seed in the West and can't afford to lose many games with how competitive the West is. 9.5/10 Star Power: Anthony Davis is a bit banged up but is still an elite player, Jrue Holiday has also been great this year. Boston has a ton of key players including Kyrie Irving who should have a fun matchup with Holiday. 9/10 Who will win? Total: 9/10
[Serious] Can we have a discussion about Scott Foster in light of new information about disgraced former referee Tim Donaghy?
Today ESPN came out with a new article providing evidence that Donaghy was fixing games that he bet on. Around the time this scandal was unraveling, it was revealed that Donaghy called current referee Scott Foster 134 times during the 06-07 season when he was fixing matches. The only person he spoke with more during this time was James Battista, his middleman and main co-conspirator. Foster has been widely criticized as a terrible ref in the nba community, but is there more to his bad reffing than meets the eye? Notably the new ESPN article has this quote from the FBI agent investigating the scandal
"If you're going to ask me if I would do it differently now, the answer is yes. I would not have gone to brief Stern," Scala told me. (Through the NBA, Stern declined an interview request for this story.) In Donaghy's many conversations with the Feds through these weeks, he had begun pointing fingers and making allegations about other referees -- other refs who may have been corrupt. So the FBI had worked out a plan. "We were prepared to do some undercover things to corroborate Donaghy's story," Scala says. Namely, they were going to wire up Donaghy so he could get other allegedly corrupted NBA referees to incriminate themselves. About a month after the meeting with Stern, however, the New York Post blared news of the FBI investigation across its front page. "Our plans were blown up by the fact that somebody leaked this," Scala lamented to me. "I don't like to talk in terms of coulda, woulda, shoulda, but if the Post story didn't come out, [Donaghy] would have worn a wire, and I don't know where it would have gone. Things may have been different. That's the bottom line."
History of Rigged NBA, Organized Crime in Sports, Discussion of Possible Solutions
crowd starts chanting REF YOU SUCK This is a little lighter than standard /conspiracy faire but I think it was worth a shot here in hopes of generating some real discussion, spreading awareness, and hopefully we can all learn something about the nature of professional sports and high level competition. As I'm sure some are aware, we are less than 15 years removed from a game-rigging scandal that involved NBA referees not only fixing games for their own personal benefit but on behalf of organized crime. This particular incident as officially investigated by the FBI went on for several years at least. So why now? NBA Popularity seems to be at all-time high and the playoffs this year have been especially awful - the call consistency in each series is laughable. I wrote the majority of this post while watching the first part of the Blazers v Thunder game 5 last night - the first half merited about a dozen threads on /nba complaining about the calls which were all deleted - so after trying to discuss these issues in /nba several times and even trying a thread on /nbadiscussion, I'm now here to attempt to discuss these issues in a serious way. Some background facts: NBA has been investigated by the FBI for game fixing / rigging as recently as 2007. Phone records were obtained that proved referee Tim Donaghy was fixing games, collaborating with other referees, and was even involved with organized crime. Despite this evidence of networked corruption, Donaghy was the ONLY one who was punished. He spent 13 months in prison. He wrote a book about the scandal called "Personal Foul" which was published in 2009. Donaghy was also the son of a successful career referee who worked national championship college games for the NCAA. Incidents like this go back much further than Ayesha Curry (Steph Curry's wife who famous tweeted about game fixing a couple years ago) or Tim Donaghy back into the Jordan era and before. There was famously a Kings vs Lakers series in 2002, The Blazers vs Lakers series of 2000, and the Bucks vs Sixers series of 2001 - all of which have many youtube videos dedicated to them for those who are interested. The NBA and other sports leagues only enforce rules selectively in order to promote certain narratives or players to create a positive image for the league. The cases above were all about creating Shaq / Kobe Laker tradition and promoting the legacy of Allen Iverson - all of whom are now in the Hall of Fame and continue to work to promote the NBA. Selective rule enforcement along with backroom deals appear to be the mainstay of how this rigging is accomplished from my perspective. Once you learn about these incidents it's really incredibly naive to believe the NBA is not heavily managed. "[The NBA] should come out and say it’s a form of entertainment, not an athletic event like in college." - Ex-NBA Ref Tim Donaghy https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2015/may/22/ex-nba-ref-tim-donaghy-organized-will-always-have-a-hand-in-sports Anyone claiming the fans are delusional and the reffing is fine is either on the take or has no clue about the actual history of these issues. Blaming the fans is the equivalent of blaming the victim - the fans support the league with their money and their interest and for the most part, like myself, only want to see good competition. On the contrary, it's the league which is corrupt and has means, motive and opportunity to rig it's own contests. There are more examples like this of the game being warped over the years to help certain narratives develop and to keep attention on the league - and other rules designed to regulate the flow and pacing of the game to give the television audience a more "watchable" product. The results is that there seems to be a growing distance between what we all think of as "basketball" and what we see during an NBA game. So what do I propose? I recognize this sort of a pipe dream, however, I'd like to have the discussion in the hopes of affecting some positive change somewhere down the line, or perhaps at least to raise some awareness regarding these issues.
I believe in light of all these past incidents, all refs should be held accountable for bad calls as well as missed calls. Calls are internally tracked already - the league already has this data but keeps it private. Publish this data. And then punish refs if their call % falls below a certain threshold immediately - at least take them off active rotation for some type of remedial course.
Refs salary also needs to be public and needs to be high enough to keep them honest. Can refs that make 50k per year effectively officiate players making nearly 50 million?
Add 2 more refs per game - so refs would be surrounding the action at all times. If the Refs are corrupt, why add more? Too often refs don't have a good angle on a play and are forced to guess one way or another, which only leads to more judgment calls and fewer clear calls.
I believe total transparency is the key to solving this problem, however, when I look around the world at other sports leagues, I realize they're all embattled by referee scandal a great deal of the time. MLB is probably the best? Hard to say - would love some discussion in the comments. I know football (soccer) and American football are both in sad shape.
In reality there may simply be too much money and too many people involved to police this effectively as long as groups with business interest control the league. Honestly, in my opinion, world-wide sports leagues should be governed with public interest in mind rather than by private groups for business interests. Not a single major sports league can be trusted as it currently stands in my opinion. From concussions to game-rigging to free-speech issues for athletes. Since the Donaghy incident, the NBA has boldly moved forward to make betting on games not only legal, but a part of the NBA entertainment experience. There's simply too much money to be made and businesses like to make money. Ex-NBA ref Tim Donaghy once said 'Organized crime will always have a hand in sports' and this was before betting became legal and it's now being actively encouraged as a revenue stream. I realize some of /conspiracy will have no interest in this, but I believe others will understand my perspective - this is just another example of corruption in our day and age and another exercise in fighting and exposing it. I was hoping to keep discussion on the history rigged sports and ways to help ensure fairness but I welcome any type of constructive input. Thanks for reading.
I had the holidays to myself this year (mid 30s bachelor, siblings were with in-laws) and had a comped room at Aria so I made a trip to Vegas from San Francisco, CA. I had told myself I will take a day off the Strip to visit Fremont. My strategy - This is a more aggressive style I've been playing this holiday season. Before I never pressed my bets and it was just a grind session. While this trip was a negative, I believe that if I did not press my bets on the hot shooters, my losses would be greater and my wins would be less. The data does not show the times where I was out 75% of my buy-in and a hot shooter came in to save my ass
Make the pass line bet for minimum. On $5 tables, I went max odds up to 5x. On $10, $15, $25 tables, I went with 1x, 2x, 3x.
1A) If the dealer is friendly and making jokes and small talk, I would bet $1-$5 on the pass for them. 2) I place all the inside numbers 5, 6, 8, 9 for the minimum bet. 3) If the point is 4, 6, 8 10, I make a two way hardway for just the point number for $5 and $1 tip 4) If there is the ATS bonus, I typically played it. On $5 tables, I bet two way 212 ($2 All Small, $1 All, $2 All Tall). At $10 and $15 tables, 555 for me, 212 for dealers 5) I try to press my wins up to quarters (for 5/9, it goes along $5 > $10 > $25. for 6/8, $6 > $12 > $24 > $30) before collecting. 5A) If it's a cold table and I'm in the red, I would collect the first win before pressing. 5B) If I have successfully pressed it up to quarters, if I collected a win off the pressed bet, and if I had already made a good profit (more than 50% of my buy-in, I keep pressing up past $100. 6) If the table is cold, I give it 2 go-arounds to see if it heats up. If a shooter had a hot roll, I play 1 more go-around to see if they still got heat. 7) After color up, I leave all the loose $1 and $5 chips on the table Some highlights
Another player and I both hit either All Tall or All Small for $5 each several times in a session
At Planet Hollywood, I bought in just as a shooter started to heat up. He was a new player so he only had the pass line, no odds, and the field. I had my inside numbers pressed up to $100+ each. Made $500 off the guy's roll and his own stack never grew. We kept telling him to place odds and to play the numbers, but he kept his own style. I was the next shooter and rolled for 25 minutes, again pressing several up past $100+
At MGM Grand, we had a hot shooter and the dealer was just giving a lot of us shit for not pressing enough or adding to our bets. I had pressed up to $100+ and he just kept shaking his head at us. The players next to me never pressed.
At Bellagio, I stepped in just as a quiet older lady started her roll. She had a hot roll and hit the points instantly several times, hitting several hard points, and I had pressed up again. She only made one side of the bonus and it got me out of the red. I head over to Park MGM and 30 minutes later she joins the table. This time she hits the bonus for my 555/212 bet. Session ended with $1200 profit. If you wanted to know - she always played stick left, no dice setting, just picked it up, and flicked the dice like a lady throwing her silk handkerchief
At Excalibur, I stepped into a roll in progress. For some reason, the other side of the table had the puck off and I bought in mid-roll. This is my personal NO-NO rule. I would have waited it out, but I made a mistake and disturb the roll. The guy was hot and I pressed my $5 to $100. After he PSO, I just colored up.
Some take-aways
My best sessions were just being in the right place at the right time.
The female players had the best rolls. The better ones were playing besides their husbands. Single women, not too "hot"
Set the dice if you want and if you believe. No one cares as long as you're winning. One beginner shooter had a hot roll, but he had the worst roll style in the world. The dice wouldn't even make it down the table, it slipped out of the hand, if he manages to get it down the table, he chucked it so hard it destroyed all the stacks.
TIP THE DEALERS!! I played and tipped constantly at Park MGM and the dealers recognized me every night. They even talked to the pit boss to let me play with the lower minimum if they had just upped it before I joined in. I tipped at every table during the entire trip so the dealers knew my bets and would remind me if I had missed something.

Some NBA players had a reserved table. I didn't see their bets but people kept asking them for pictures which they seem cool about
Can someone help me understand why so many people think the NBA is Corrupt?
I'm new to following basketball. This is my 2nd season of being really into it. I've been impressed by a lot of the stuff I've seen. How the game has moved back to being a team sport instead of hero ball all the time. Also, some of the more progressive social stuff like a female being an asst. Coach for the Spurs. But when I talk to people who haven't been regular watchers since like 2005 I often hear that the NBA is corrupt and rigged. I know there was some scandal with the refs a few years back. How was that handled? Is this a generally known thing that the NBA actually tries to sway games to make it more interesting? Or are these people just contrarians?

Am I being a dumbass or did the refs attempt to nudge the over-under at the end of Raptors-Sixers?
I posted this to nba and it was removed. I could sound like an absolute dumbass, but I want someone to actually read this and tell me if I’m overreacting or not. Disclaimer: this doesn't prove anything about game-fixing. But it does look awfully suspicious. Also, this isn't just unjustified whining — I tried to get as much evidence as I could, and hyperlinked every foul I reference so you can decide for yourself how justified the whistles were. The Bovada over-under line for Sixers-Raptors Game 6 opened at 213.5, but was bet down to 211.5 by tipoff. 56 percent of money was still on the under. At 4:47 in the 4th quarter, the score was Sixers 101 - Raptors 80. 181 total points, 31 points shy of the over. With both teams seemingly ready to slow the game down and the Raptors about to throw in the towel, there appeared to be no chance at hitting the over. Over the next 58 seconds between 4:47 and a Sixers timeout at 3:49, the two teams combined to shoot 11 free throws (7 for Toronto and 4 for Philly). The fouls-only play by play for those 58 seconds looked like this:
Ben Simmons shoots 2 free throws (4:47)%20(T.Washington))
Flagrant on Joel Embiid on the second free throw, Marc Gasol shoots 2 free throws (4:47)%20(Z.Zarba))
Personal foul on Tobias Harris (4:37)%20(J.Goble))
Personal foul on Ben Simmons, Raptors enter the bonus (4:34)%20(J.Goble))
Shooting foul on Tobias Harris, Kawhi Leonard shoots 2 free throws (4:30)%20(Z.Zarba))
Away-from-play foul on J.J. Redick, Danny Green shoots 1 free throw and the Raptors keep the ball (4:04)%20(Z.Zarba))
Shooting foul on Ben Simmons, Kawhi Leonard shoots 2 free throws (4:03)%20(T.Washington))
Personal foul on Serge Ibaka. Sixers are in the bonus, so Jimmy Butler shoots 2 free throws (3:49)%20(J.Goble))
All fouls are hyperlinked — you can decide for yourself how legitimate some of the calls were. The two teams had not shot 11 free throws combined in any of the first three quarters. They'd just done it in 58 seconds. All of a sudden, with 3:33 left the Sixers call a timeout. Both teams sub in their deep benches. Over a 74-second span, the score had gone from 101-80 to 106-87. 12 points in only 74 seconds, or a point scored every 6 seconds. The total reached 193, within reach of the 211.5 over-under. It would take only 19 points over the next 3:33 of garbage time to hit the over-under — still a pretty large number, but doable thanks to a flurry of whistles. Predictably, the garbage time defense was basically nonexistent. Both teams threw in a few threes and open layups — and the refs, although not quite so blatantly this time, nudged the odds a bit more with another six free throws in the final 3:33. With 36 seconds to play, Toronto got a steal and a runout dunk to make the score Sixers 112 - Raptors 101. 213 points. Remember, the over-under was 211.5. Over the last 4:47 of the game, the Sixers and Raptors combined for 32 points and 19 free throws. According to Basketball Reference, there hadn't been a 32-point five-minute stretch in any of the first four games. The two teams shot 36 free throws in the first 43:13 of the game, for a rate of about one free throw every 80 seconds. For the last 4:47, the two teams shot 19 free throws, for a rate of about one free throw every 15 seconds — and for that one 58-second stretch between 4:47 and 3:49, one free throw every six seconds. Again, this doesn't prove anything for certain. But when the free throw rate more than QUINTUPLES in garbage time of a twenty-point game, two teams combine for their highest-scoring five minute stretch of the series, and the two teams just barely cover the over, it seems very suspicious. TL;DR: In garbage time over the last 4:47 of the Sixers-Raptors game — a stretch that began with Philly up 21 — the two teams shot 19 free throws, more than five times as many as expected, and the two teams combined for 32 points, the highest-scoring five minute stretch of the series. This allowed the teams to cover a 211.5 over-under spread with 213 total points. This isn't definitive proof of game fixing, but to me it's awful suspicious.

Imagine if there was one desk that all stories could cross so that, at 4am, a media plan could be decided upon and disseminated where all news outlets coordinated to set the goalposts of debate and hyper focused on specific issues to drive a narrative to control how you vote and how you spend money; where Internet shills were given marching orders in tandem to what was shown on television, printed in newspapers and spread throughout articles on the World Wide Web. https://i.imgur.com/Elnci0M.png In the past, we had Operation Mockingbird, where the program was supremely confident that it could control stories around the world, even in instructions to cover up any story about a possible “Yeti” sighting, should it turn out they were real. https://i.imgur.com/121LXqy.png If, in 1959, the government was confident in its ability to control a story about a Yeti, then what is their level of confidence in controlling stories, today? https://i.imgur.com/jQFVYew.png https://i.imgur.com/ZKMYGJj.png In fact, we have a recent example of a situation similar to the Yeti. When Bill Clinton and Loretta Lynch met on the TARMAC to spike the Hillary email investigation, the FBI was so confident it wasn’t them, that their entire focus was finding the leaker, starting with searching within the local PD. We have documentation that demonstrates the state of mind of the confidence the upper levels of the FBI have when dealing with the media. https://i.imgur.com/IbjDOkI.png https://i.imgur.com/NH86ozU.png The marriage between mainstream media and government is a literal one and this arrangement is perfectly legal. https://i.imgur.com/OAd4vpf.png But, this problem extends far beyond politics; the private sector, the scientific community, even advice forums are shilled heavily. People are paid to cause anxiety, recommend people break up and otherwise sow depression and nervousness. This is due to a correlating force that employs “systems psychodynamics”, focusing on “tension centered” strategies to create “organizational paradoxes” by targeting people’s basic assumptions about the world around them to create division and provide distraction. https://i.imgur.com/6OEWYFN.png https://i.imgur.com/iG4sdD4.png https://i.imgur.com/e89Rx6B.png https://i.imgur.com/uotm9Cg.png https://i.imgur.com/74wt9tD.png In this day and age, it is even easier to manage these concepts and push a controlled narrative from a central figure than it has ever been. Allen & Co is a “boutique investment firm” that managed the merger between Disney and Fox and operates as an overseeing force for nearly all media and Internet shill armies, while having it’s fingers in sports, social media, video games, health insurance, etc. https://i.imgur.com/zlpBh3c.png https://i.imgur.com/e5ZvFFJ.png Former director of the CIA and Paul Brennan’s former superior George Tenet, holds the reigns of Allen & Co. The cast of characters involves a lot of the usual suspects. https://i.imgur.com/3OlrX7G.png
In 1973, Allen & Company bought a stake in Columbia Pictures. When the business was sold in 1982 to Coca-Cola, it netted a significant profit. Since then, Herbert Allen, Jr. has had a place on Coca-Cola's board of directors. Since its founding in 1982, the Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference has regularly drawn high-profile attendees such as Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Rupert Murdoch, Barry Diller, Michael Eisner, Oprah Winfrey, Robert Johnson, Andy Grove, Richard Parsons, and Donald Keough. Allen & Co. was one of ten underwriters for the Google initial public offering in 2004. In 2007, Allen was sole advisor to Activision in its $18 billion merger with Vivendi Games. In 2011, the New York Mets hired Allen & Co. to sell a minority stake of the team. That deal later fell apart. In November 2013, Allen & Co. was one of seven underwriters on the initial public offering of Twitter. Allen & Co. was the adviser of Facebook in its $19 billion acquisition of WhatsApp in February 2014. In 2015, Allen & Co. was the advisor to Time Warner in its $80 billion 2015 merger with Charter Communications, AOL in its acquisition by Verizon, Centene Corporation in its $6.8 billion acquisition of Health Net, and eBay in its separation from PayPal. In 2016, Allen & Co was the lead advisor to Time Warner in its $108 billion acquisition by AT&T, LinkedIn for its merger talks with Microsoft, Walmart in its $3.3 billion purchase of Jet.com, and Verizon in its $4.8 billion acquisition of Yahoo!. In 2017, Allen & Co. was the advisor to Chewy.com in PetSmart’s $3.35 billion purchase of the online retailer.
Previous conference guests have included Bill and Melinda Gates, Warren and Susan Buffett, Tony Blair, Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Allen alumnus and former Philippine Senator Mar Roxas, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, Quicken Loans Founder & Chairman Dan Gilbert, Yahoo! co-founder Jerry Yang, financier George Soros, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Media Mogul Rupert Murdoch, eBay CEO Meg Whitman, BET founder Robert Johnson, Time Warner Chairman Richard Parsons, Nike founder and chairman Phil Knight, Dell founder and CEO Michael Dell, NBA player LeBron James, Professor and Entrepreneur Sebastian Thrun, Governor Chris Christie, entertainer Dan Chandler, Katharine Graham of The Washington Post, Diane Sawyer, InterActiveCorp Chairman Barry Diller, Linkedin co-founder Reid Hoffman, entrepreneur Wences Casares, EXOR and FCA Chairman John Elkann, Sandro Salsano from Salsano Group, and Washington Post CEO Donald E. Graham, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, and Oprah Winfrey.
https://i.imgur.com/VZ0OtFa.png George Tenet, with the reigns of Allen & Co in his hands, is able to single-handedly steer the entire Mockingbird apparatus from cable television to video games to Internet shills from a singular location determining the spectrum of allowable debate. Not only are they able to target people’s conscious psychology, they can target people’s endocrine systems with food and pornography; where people are unaware, on a conscious level, of how their moods and behavior are being manipulated. https://i.imgur.com/mA3MzTB.png
"The problem with George Tenet is that he doesn't seem to care to get his facts straight. He is not meticulous. He is willing to make up stories that suit his purposes and to suppress information that does not." "Sadly but fittingly, 'At the Center of the Storm' is likely to remind us that sometimes what lies at the center of a storm is a deafening silence."
https://i.imgur.com/YHMJnnP.png Tenet joined President-elect Bill Clinton's national security transition team in November 1992. Clinton appointed Tenet Senior Director for Intelligence Programs at the National Security Council, where he served from 1993 to 1995. Tenet was appointed Deputy Director of Central Intelligence in July 1995. Tenet held the position as the DCI from July 1997 to July 2004. Citing "personal reasons," Tenet submitted his resignation to President Bush on June 3, 2004. Tenet said his resignation "was a personal decision and had only one basis—in fact, the well-being of my wonderful family—nothing more and nothing less. In February 2008, he became a managing director at investment bank Allen & Company. https://i.imgur.com/JnGHqOS.png We have the documentation that demonstrates what these people could possibly be doing with all of these tools of manipulation at their fingertips. The term for it is “covert political action” for which all media put before your eyes is used to serve as a veneer… a reality TV show facade of a darker modus operandum. https://i.imgur.com/vZC4D29.png https://www.cia.gov/library/center-for-the-study-of-intelligence/kent-csi/vol36no3/html/v36i3a05p_0001.htm
It is now clear that we are facing an implacable enemy whose avowed objective is world domination by whatever means and at whatever costs. There are no rules in such a game. Hitherto acceptable norms of human conduct do not apply. If the US is to survive, longstanding American concepts of "fair play" must be reconsidered. We must develop effective espionage and counterespionage services and must learn to subvert, sabotage and destroy our enemies by more clever, more sophisticated means than those used against us. It may become necessary that the American people be made acquainted with, understand and support this fundamentally repugnant philosophy.
Intelligence historian Jeffrey T. Richelson says the S.A. has covered a variety of missions. The group, which recently was reorganized, has had about 200 officers, divided among several groups: the Special Operations Group; the Foreign Training Group, which trains foreign police and intelligence officers; the Propaganda and Political Action Group, which handles disinformation; the Computer Operations Group, which handles information warfare; and the Proprietary Management Staff, which manages whatever companies the CIA sets up as covers for the S.A.
…Those operations we inaugurated in the years 1955-7 are still secret, but, for present purposes, I can say all that’s worth saying about them in a few sentences – after, that is, I offer these few words of wisdom. The ‘perfect’ political action operation is, by definition, uneventful. Nothing ‘happens’ in it. It is a continuing arrangement, neither a process nor a series of actions proceeding at a starting point and ending with a conclusion.
CIA FBI NSA Personnel Active in Scientology: https://i.imgur.com/acu2Eti.png When you consider the number of forces that can be contained within a single “political action group” in the form on a “boutique investment firm,” where all sides of political arguments are predetermined by a selected group of actors who have been planted, compromised or leveraged in some way in order to control the way they spin their message. https://i.imgur.com/tU4MD4S.png The evidence of this coordinated effort is overwhelming and the “consensus” that you see on TV, in sports, in Hollywood, in the news and on the Internet is fabricated.
Under the guise of a fake account a posting is made which looks legitimate and is towards the truth is made - but the critical point is that it has a VERY WEAK PREMISE without substantive proof to back the posting. Once this is done then under alternative fake accounts a very strong position in your favour is slowly introduced over the life of the posting. It is IMPERATIVE that both sides are initially presented, so the uninformed reader cannot determine which side is the truth. As postings and replies are made the stronger 'evidence' or disinformation in your favour is slowly 'seeded in.' Thus the uninformed reader will most likely develop the same position as you, and if their position is against you their opposition to your posting will be most likely dropped. However in some cases where the forum members are highly educated and can counter your disinformation with real facts and linked postings, you can then 'abort' the consensus cracking by initiating a 'forum slide.'
When you find yourself feeling like common sense and common courtesy aren’t as common as they ought to be, it is because there is a massive psychological operation controlled from the top down to ensure that as many people as possible are caught in a “tension based” mental loop that is inflicted on them by people acting with purpose to achieve goals that are not in the interest of the general population, but a method of operating in secret and corrupt manner without consequences. Notice that Jeffrey Katzenberg, of Disney, who is intertwined with Allen & Co funds the Young Turks. He is the perfect example of the relationship between media and politics.
Katzenberg has also been involved in politics. With his active support of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, he was called "one of Hollywood's premier political kingmakers and one of the Democratic Party's top national fundraisers."
Last week, former DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg’s new mobile entertainment company WndrCo was part of a $20 million funding round in TYT Network, which oversees 30 news and commentary shows covering politics, pop culture, sports and more. This includes the flagship “The Young Turks” program that streams live on YouTube every day. Other investors in the round included venture capital firms Greycroft Partners, E.ventures and 3L Capital, which led the round. This brings total funding for Young Turks to $24 million.
Hollywood activism long has been depicted as a club controlled by a handful of powerful white men: Katzenberg, Spielberg, Lear, David Geffen, Haim Saban and Bob Iger are the names most often mentioned. But a new generation of power brokers is ascendant, including J.J. Abrams and his wife, Katie McGrath, cited for their personal donations and bundling skills; Shonda Rhimes, who held a get-out-the-vote rally at USC's Galen Center on Sept. 28 that drew 10,000 people; CAA's Darnell Strom, who has hosted events for Nevada congresswoman Jacky Rosen and Arizona congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema; and former Spotify executive Troy Carter, who held three fundraisers for Maryland gubernatorial candidate Ben Jealous (Carter also was a fundraiser for President Obama).
Viacom, after splitting off from Les Moonves Les Moonves ' CBS , still holds Paramount Pictures, and that movie studio in December agreed to acquire DreamWorks SKG, the creative shop founded by the Hollywood triumvirate of Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg (a former exec at The Walt Disney Co.). DreamWorks Animation had been spun off into a separate company. Now it's time for Freston to make back some money--and who better to do a little business with than George Soros? The billionaire financier leads a consortium of Soros Strategic Partners LP and Dune Entertainment II LLC, which together are buying the DreamWorks library--a collection of 59 flicks, including Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator, and American Beauty.
