I was fortunate enough to land two Sunday tickets to the 2015 Masters, and brought my dad. I solicited advice from acquaintances and friends who’ve been lucky enough to attend at some point in the past, but by far the best tips and tricks came from /golf. Thanks, everyone, for helping make it an incredibly memorable day.
I should also share some of the other things I learned from the experience, in the hope that it will help everyone else who manages to score tickets for 2016 a couple months from now:

• If you get two tickets through the lottery, as I did, resist the urge to bring your favorite drinking buddy. Bring your father, mentor, older sibling, whoever – even if they’re not a golf fan. They’ll have a blast even if they hate golf, but also they’ll appreciate that you thought of them, first.
• If you get two tickets through the lottery the next year, bring your drinking buddy.
• When you reserve your hotel in advance (as soon as you get tickets, ideally), be sure to call the hotel and make sure that you’ve paid for it in full already. Otherwise, they might give away your room, as they did with ours. Fortunately, they held a room for us in the hotel next door, but it was a smoking room. I believe I have inhaled the equivalent of three boxes of Marlboro reds – actually, given the quality of this hotel, Pall Mall – in two brief nights of sleep.
• Bring binoculars. You’ll be very, very glad you did.
• The city of Augusta is the only place in the world where I have stood at one Waffle House and been able to see another Waffle House, across and down the street.
• Eat at Waffle House. It’ll taste better and cost less than most anything else, anywhere other than inside Augusta National itself.
• Somewhere in Augusta is a decent bar at which to pass the time for when you don’t have tickets to the tournament. Don’t expect a particularly encouraging representation of the human race there, but most everyone was very friendly and eager to share their advice on the Masters experience. We particularly enjoyed hanging out with a Welsh fellow who shared his opinion of the guy who had occupied the barstool next to him up to that point. The other guy said he and his wife had just visited Rome; the Welsh guy asked, “Have they finished building the Coliseum yet?”; the other guy said, “No...what’s taking them so long?”
• Said Welsh fellow always stays at the Super 8 on Washington Road. This is smart. That way you can walk to and from the course as well as to and from any bars and restaurants you might care to visit. Also along Washington are strip malls housing other sports bars and restaurants, a Hooters where John Daly signs autographs between beers and still more Waffle Houses. Try not to think about the fact that the other 361 days of the year, this is a somewhat sad-looking slice of America.
• Many suggested we have dinner at T-Bonz. It was ok, not great. I bet every other weekend of the year, the staffers aren’t so keen to rush you in and out. The food gets a passing grade. You can die not having eaten here, though if you have high cholesterol, well, you might die eating here. Make sure this happens after you go to the Masters, not before.
• Day of, set your alarm for 5am and try to be out of your hotel and on the road to National by 5:30. I promise you, thousands of other people hit the road an hour before you did. Do not stop for coffee or food. Just go.
• Drive in the back way, along Berckmans Road, and park by Gate 9. It’s a slower route, but you will hit no traffic on your way. After you park in the free lot and walk to the gate, there will already be about 500 people in the queue in front of you. But don’t get discouraged.
• The gates will open well before 8am. As soon as you get inside, you realize how massive the property is – and how far you still have to walk just to get to anything resembling a golf course.
• After you get through security at Gate 9, there’s a gift shop not far away. Buy chairs there, then follow the mobs toward hole 16 (you’ll queue up again on a path through the woods, and wait about 15 min. again, don’t get discouraged).
• Follow the path toward 16 and put your chair down on the near side of the water, close to the green. From there you can see all of 16, the approach and green of 15, the tee of 17 and, barely, the green on 6. That’s where those binoculars come in handy – also use them to see the scoreboard on 6.
• After you put your chair down, walk as much of the course as you can or want to, before players tee off. Spend a little time at the range, and go get your picture taken at Magnolia Lane. It’s free, and the queue is only about 20 min. long in the morning.
• When you’re ready to shop, go back to the one near Gate 9 for all your Masters-logo-emblazoned crap you will talk yourself into paying too much for. Do NOT go to the big shop up near the main entrance, as it’s crazy mobbed in there and the selection isn’t as good.
• My credit card actually melted. It looks like Salvador Dali painted it.
• Pimento cheese is disgusting. But eat one anyway, for tradition’s sake. Egg salad is fantastic.
• The bathrooms, though used by hundreds of people every minute, are cleaner and nicer than my bathroom at home. This reminds me, I really should clean my bathroom.
• Try to spend some time at the tees on 1, 4 and 11. You’ll get a much better sense of how powerful and accurate PGA Tour golfers are.
• Everyone says that you have no idea from TV how hilly and incredibly pristine the landscaping is. You have no idea from TV how hilly and incredibly pristine the landscaping is. Again, especially at Amen Corner, you realize how immense the property is because the woods are quite thick along this edge of the grounds – and there are no houses or other buildings visible in the distance. Augusta National truly is an isolated paradise right in the middle of a remarkably uninteresting, not terribly aesthetically pleasing town.

• Ian Poulter had his 8- or 9-year-old son following him along the course, outside the ropes. After a good approach shot on 14, his son was giving dad a thumbs-up. Poulter turned his attention toward the ropes and gave the signal back. I realized he was following his son around the course as much as his son followed him. Poulter was also cheering on the shots of his playing partner for the day, Paul Casey. Ian Poulter is awesome.
• Many say 12 is the hardest hole in golf. I’ve never played it, but yes, it is the hardest hole in golf. It has to be. It doesn’t look so bad on TV, especially since the players swing so gingerly off that tee. In person, it looks impossible. We saw no birdies, several bogeys and Adam Scott card a 7.
• The 13th is yet another hole that demonstrates how talented the players are. Your binoculars come in handy here if you stand along the right side of the fairway for a bit. You can see the 12th green to your left, through the trees, the 13th tee, and the 13th green to your right. Successful second shots from the dogleg, when viewed through the binoculars, are truly impressive.
• Everyone you meet out on the course will be incredibly nice and pleasant. Though as the afternoon winds on, the sad drunks come out. Yes, Texan sitting in front of me, I know… we are witnessing history. I heard you the fourth time.
• After the leaders come through 16, don’t bother racing the crowds up to 17 and 18. You won’t be able to get close. Just pack up and head out back through Gate 9. If you checked your merchandise from the gift shop (I recommend this), you’ll get it back quickly. Every single queue at concessions, bathrooms and everywhere else at Augusta National move much faster than you expect them to.
• The day goes quickly. They say golf is slow and boring, but the day will be over before you realize what you just experienced.
• You’ll be exhausted when you get back to your smoky, overpriced hotel room at about 8pm. Hit up Waffle House, go back to the hotel, shower, and watch SportsCenter in bed. You’ll get to see some of the moments you missed, and think to yourself how exciting it was that you were there for the ones they keep showing over and over. It sounds corny and sentimental, but it will happen – especially if you follow the first bullet of advice, above.

Unfortunately what should have been a nice profitable week was thrown out the window with a piss poor performance by Willett on the last round of the Irish Open. Disappointing.

Who does everyone else have? There was a lot of potential plays this week I found and it was hard to limit both fields. Might be throwing in some extra action this week before the tournaments begin.
