Prediction/Flair Bet Thread (EuroBasket edition)
PLEASE TAKE MONETARY BETS TO /CHARITABLEBETS During the season, these would take place on Fridays (every two weeks) but because Eurobasket is starting tomorrow, it's a good time to roll out this thread idea. Basically, state a prediction for EuroBasket or NBA season. If you would like to make it a flair bet, make sure you put it in your comment. You can also make a prediction and choose to accept a challenge/flair bet that another user presents to you. Tomorrow night (midnight?), I will screencap and remove the thread, then add the screencap to the wiki (so you guys can't cheat and edit your comments). IF YOU ARE DOING A FLAIR BET CHALLENGE, PLEASE ADD A LINK TO THE SCREENCAP ALONG WITH A SMALL NOTE ON EACH OF YOUR COMMENTS SAYING THAT YOU ARE DOING A FLAIR BET TO AVOID CONFUSION If these types of threads go well, we might do more of them during the season.
Ricky Rubio has become a summer basketball god, with one of the best win-loss records around (possibly the best non-US record ever). This is far from comprehensive, but the following is a summary of his senior basketball summer results. Of particular note is his 24-1 record since 2017, when he more fully assumed a starting position and control of the Spanish team after Spain’s golden generation of players started leaving or retiring from international play. Spain: 2008 Olympics: 6-2 2009 Eurobasket: 7-2 2010 World Cup: 5-4 2011 Eurobasket: 10-1 2013 Eurobasket: 7-4 2014 World Cup: 6-1 2016 Olympics: 5-3 2017 Eurobasket: 8-1 2019 World Cup: 8-0 and MVP NBA: 2020 Bubble League: 8-0 Could the Suns have gone 26-0 if they made the West play-in? Who could bet against the summer basketball god (non-TJ Warren category, of course)?

The Taiwan Super Basketball League is believed to be the only basketball league in the world that is currently operational. You can see my previous post for more details about the league. As I mentioned in that previous post, the SBL Finals are a best-of-seven series. Since the Beer were the regular-season champions and the highest seed, they were automatically given a 1-0 lead in the Finals before the series started. Therefore, while I am referring to the game played this morning as "Game 6," it is only the fifth actual game played in the series. In Game 6, former Central Michigan standout Marcus Keene led the way for Yulon Luxgen with 46 (!) points. Sim Bhullar led the team with 11 rebounds. Ihor Zaytsev led the Beer with 15 points. Former East Carolina player Kentrell Barkley added 13 points. You can view the full box score here. Yulon Luxgen's effort sets up a decisive Game 7 on Thursday (April 30) at 5:00 am ET. Tomorrow afternoon, I will have a preview post for that game, with a link to the Twitter stream as well as the betting line and oveunder. You can follow Eleven Sports Taiwan, the broadcaster of the games, on Twitter at @ElevenSportsTW.
As we (presumably) get closer to finding out who the next head coach of the Suns will be, let me lay out the argument for my favorite candidate, Jazz assistant Igor Kokoskov. While it’s tough to determine with much confidence the ability of a coaching candidate who has never actually held a head coaching position in the NBA before, much less as fans with virtually no insight into the interviewing process, Kokoskov’s accomplishments as the head coach of Slovenia and as an assistant for various teams around the NBA are hard to ignore. To start, you have Kokoskov’s perfect 15-0 record with the Slovenian national team. His undefeated 2017 FIBA Eurobasket championship run included a stunning upset over a Spanish roster littered with current and former NBA talent, highlighted by Ricky Rubio and the Gasol brothers. The full game against Spain is available if you have a couple hours to burn, you get a good glimpse of the type of offense Kokoskov likes to run with a lot of off-ball movement designed to free up shooters and smart team defense. It should be noted that this Slovenian team was far from favorites entering the tournament, given only the ninth best odds per BetOnline. The team ended up scoring the second highest PPG with an average point differential of +14.5 through the knockout round. For a team led by Dragic, an 18 year old Doncic, and Anthony Randolph that’s not too shabby; Kokoskov made his mark by getting everything he could out of a roster that no one else seemed to think particularly highly of. As an assistant coach in the NBA Kokoskov has shown a similar knack for getting players to realize their potential. His work with guards seems to be of particular note, helping players like George Hill score the highest PPG of his career on a career best 59.9% TS. Says Hill:
It's different, working with him. The things that he has me do is different than I've been used to. But what he's had me do is phenomenal, little things that I didn't know would help me become a better shooter and better off the dribble, things like that. We take a lot of time doing balance and core.
Likewise, Ricky Rubio has been another beneficiary of Kokoskov’s guard-whispering ability. Through his first 42 games with the Jazz, Rubio shot 39/29/88, not far off from his career splits of 38/32/83. However, after working extensively with Kokoskov on his shooting Rubio closed out the second half of the season shooting 45/42/85. During his stint with the Suns the story was the same, helping Shaq improve his FT% by over 8 points in his first year with the team. Throw in the work he did developing a young Dragic and glowing endorsements he has received from Suns alums like Alvin Gentry and it would seem that Kokoskov would be an ideal fit to develop our young core and improve the shooting of guys like Warren, Jackson, and Chriss. When you combine Kokoskov’s modern offensive schemes, tough team defense, and player development I think you have a guy that could potentially hang around for the long haul. Other coaches may be more proven, but I think Igor has shown more than enough to be given the opportunity to lead a young team like the Suns.
The Nuggets have won 10 of the last 11 games in Denver against the Hawks, and have Nuggets have lost six of their last seven games at Atlanta. The Nuggets are only 3-21 on the road against the Hawks since the 1989-90 season (lost 14-straight from 1989-2004). Overall this series has been very close since 2003-04, with Denver leading 13-10
Before Denver swept the season series in both 2011-12 (1-0) and 2010-11 (2-0), the teams had split 1-1 in each of the five previous seasons
Only one Hawk has ever topped 40+ against the Nuggets – that being John Drew with 50 on 12/30/78 in Atlanta
Only once since joining the NBA have the Nuggets failed to record a steal in a game, and that was at Atlanta on 10/21/78.

An Introduction to America East Basketball Programs
So you're a former NBA fan who's looking to college ball. Well, I'm going to introduce you to a small conference located mostly in the Northeast that I have grown to love during my time at one of its schools. Yes, I am talking about the America East conference. Founded in 1979 as the ECAC-North, the conference currently consists of nine teams across seven states.
Albany Great Danes
Coach: Will Brown Home Venue:SEFCU Arena Regular Season Titles: 2 (2006, 2015) Tournament Titles: 5 (2006, 2007, 2013, 2014, 2015) 2017-18: 4th, lost in conference quarterfinal The Danes are regulars in the top half of the America East standings - they haven't finished out of it since a last-place finish in 2009-10. In that time, the Danes have racked up 5 20-win seasons as well as a famous three-peat punctuated by one of the most iconic shots in America East history by Peter Hooley. Last season the team suffered from some chemistry issues, and both players that were largely blamed for it have transferred out. Only one starter from last year is returning, so the Danes may struggle early in the season as they have to gel, but come late and postseason, they will be ready. They may not be incredible in the AE regular season, but there's no coach in AE that gets it done as well as Will Brown does. Side note, but UA is also a regular standout team on the women's side as well, winning 6 AE tournament titles in a row from 2012-2017.
Binghamton Bearcats
Coach: Tommy Dempsey Home Venue:Binghamton University Events Center Regular Season Titles: 1 (2009) Tournament Titles: 1 (2009) 2017-18: 9th, missed tournament The Bearcats went D1 in 2001 alongside Albany and Stony Brook as AE had to replace four teams that departed for the CAA (Drexel, Delaware, Hofstra, and Towson). Their men's team has largely been dire save for that magic 2009 season which saw them win 23 games and beat UMBC in the championship game before getting blown away by Duke in the NCAAs. However, a scandal rocked the school in fall 2009 when it turned out that the school had lowered standards for admissions for basketball players at coach Kevin Broadus's request. In the years since (and two coaches later), the Bearcats have been flaming garbage, and this year missed the conference tournament despite having a team that on paper isn't terrible (combining the outside shooting of guard JC Show and the inside presence of Thomas Bruce). Women's team was pretty good last year, led by AE POTY Imani Watkins who led them to the WBI Semifinals where they lost to champions Yale. I remain convinced that the women's team could've beaten the men's team.
Hartford Hawks
Coach: John Gallagher Home Venue:Chase Arena Regular Season Titles: 0 Tournament Titles: 0 2017-18: 3rd, lost in conference semifinal, lost in CIT first round Hartford is the smallest school in AE, with an enrollment of just over half of their nearest competition (Maine). If there's a year for the Hawks to finally break through and claim their first AE crown, it is this year, as they return more talent than anyone else in AE while Vermont and UMBC lost key players. They've only even made the championship game once, in 2008, when UMBC drilled them 82-65. As for their current squad...they take a LOT of threes, led by JR Lynch, Jason Dunne, and Travis Weatherington. This opens up the floor a lot for the big leprechaun John Carroll. The redshirt senior from Dublin led the Hawks in points per game and rebounds, and will be a contender for America East Player of the Year. The women's team was also pretty good last year, losing to Maine in the AE finals after scoring two upsets over Binghamton and Albany en route.
Maine Black Bears
Coach: Richard Barron Home Venue:Cross Insurance Arena Regular Season Titles: 0 Tournament Titles: 0 2017-18: 8th, lost in conference quarterfinal The Black Bears' heyday never really happened since their trophy case is empty, but the closest they came to lifting a title was 1994 when they lost to a Malik Rose-led Drexel by 8 (they lost their other two title game appearances by double digits). They haven't won double digit games since winning 11 in 2012-13. Probably the saddest team in this conference. This team was awful last year and lost star man Aaron Calixte to a transfer. If you like pain and misery like I do as a Hornets fan, Maine is perfect. However, their women's team is very good, and has won at least a share of the conference regular season title in 3 of the last 4 years. And the head coach for those teams was none other than Richard Barron, the new men's coach. (Well, except last year, when he was out on medical leave and replaced - permanently - by Amy Vachon.)
New Hampshire Wildcats
Coach: Bill Herrion Home Venue:Lundholm Gym Regular Season Titles: 0 Tournament Titles: 0 2017-18: 6th, lost in conference quarterfinal The Wildcats have made some noise over the last few years, with two 20-win seasons, a near-upset of Florida, and a postseason victory (in the CIT over Fairfield). However, the team now has to embark on a new era after the graduations of all-time leading scorer Tanner Leissner and rebounding machine Iba Camara. The Wildcats have never made a conference championship game appearance, though they have made the semis a few times, most recently in 2017 when they got the everliving potatoes beaten out of them by Vermont. Don't expect fireworks from this team, as they're not elegant and don't score a lot. Their women's team is pretty good though.
Stony Brook Seawolves
Coach: Jeff Boals Home Venue:IFCU Arena Regular Season Titles: 4 (2010, 2012, 2013, 2016) Tournament Titles: 1 (2016) 2017-18: 5th, lost in conference semifinal For years the Seawolves were the Buffalo Bills of America East. From 2011 to 2015 this team made the title game four times and lost every single one. Then a little cat called Jameel Warney came in and said "fuck it we're not choking again" and dropped 43 on Vermont in the 2016 title game, carrying the Seawolves to the promised land. Then after that season their head coach and much of their talent left. That being said the team from last season is young and has quite a bit of potential including AE Rookie of the Year Elijah Olaniyi and scorer Akwasi Yeboah. If you want to see an up-and-coming team grow, the Seawolves are a nice bet.
UMass Lowell River Hawks
Coach: Pat Duquette Home Venue:Costello Athletic Center & Tsongas Center Regular Season Titles: 0 Tournament Titles: 0 2017-18: 7th, lost in conference quarterfinal AE's newest team that only just became postseason eligible in 2017-18, not much to say here other than I'm going to miss Jahad Thomas, the 6'2" power forward that bossed it for four years at Lowell. Also, to clarify on the arena situation, they primarily play at Costello but play a couple games a year at Tsongas Center, home to their hockey team.
UMBC Retrievers
Coach: Ryan Odom Home Venue:UMBC Events Center Regular Season Titles: 1 (2008) Tournament Titles: 2 (2008, 2018) 2017-18: 2nd, won conference tournament, defeated #1 overall seed Virginia by 20 points in NCAA tournament, then lost to Kansas State Do I even need to explain? Everyone's favorite Good Boys (unless you're from Charlottesville) rallied in the conference title game to stun Vermont on a buzzer beater, then blew out the #1 overall seed in the tournament in a game I'm still not convinced I actually watched. Jairus Lyles put together two of the greatest games I have seen in my life and went from someone only AE fans knew about to a goddamn national superstar. And though UMBC loses stars KJ Maura (who is killing it as a pro in his native Puerto Rico) and Lyles (with the Utah Jazz summer league team), the future is bright for the Retrievers with a young coach and a brand-new events center that opened last season. I do also like center Daniel Akin a lot - he's very raw, but the talent is there.
Vermont Catamounts
Coach: John Becker Home Venue:Patrick Gym Regular Season Titles: 8 (2002, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2017, 2018) Tournament Titles: 6 (2003, 2004, 2005, 2010, 2012, 2017) 2017-18: 1st, lost championship game, lost in NIT First Round The Catamounts were two buzzer beaters away from going undefeated in America East play two years in a row (including the tournament), which is insane. The Cats' only other conference loss in that span was a one-point loss to Hartford. UVM's success is a recent phenomenon, fuelled largely by that mid-2000s side with Taylor Coppenrath and TJ "From the Parking Lot" Sorrentine. After the famous upset of Syracuse, UVM hoops were never the same. In a good way. This team lost quite a bit of talent this summer to graduation, but they do have a solid group of returning talent such as big man Anthony Lamb, who probably wins AE Player of the Year last year if he doesn't break his foot right before conference play starts. John Becker's teams don't really revolve around one superstar, but teamwork and discipline. This selflessness leads to both a next-man-up mentality but can also be their undoing (see: 2018 AE title game when UVM refused to shoot late to make another pass). As for the women's team...fallen giant. They are the only team, along with UConn, to have consecutive unbeaten regular seasons, and won a tournament game in 2009, but have not been the same since and are on their 3rd coach in 4 years.
Rivalries
Vermont vs Albany - The marquee rivalry of AE. These games are often hotly contested and close. The action is so heart-stopping that someone at the UVM-UA game at Patrick this year suffered an actual heart attack behind the Catamount bench, delaying the game by about half an hour. They've met in the conference title game four times, with Albany winning three, but with the exception of 2006 all three were one-possession games.
Stony Brook-Albany - Both SUNYs, they met in back-to-back conference title games in 2014 and 2015, with Albany winning both.
Stony Brook-Vermont - Met in the conference title game twice with each team taking one including Warney's monster game in 2016. This year's conference semifinal was one of the most physical games I've ever watched.
Maine-New Hampshire - Mostly a hockey rivalry because basketball isn't big at those schools. In hockey it is one of the iconic rivalries of college puck, and culminated in the famous 1999 national championship game in Anaheim, which the Black Bears won in OT.
okay it's 4am and i want to be up for the world cup

The European Championship (Eurobasket 2015) begins tomorrow and it's historic
If you're a non-European and you want to get into the EuroBasket but don't know anything about the EuroBasket 2015..don't worry! I'll be your guide for the EuroBasket 2015 The title of this thread says "historic". But surely that's just marketing right ? What separates this EuroBasket from the previous ones ? Well I'm glad you asked. For the firs time ever an European Championship will be held in 4 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. That's right. Originally Ukraine was supposed to be the host of EuroBasket 2015 but after the whole Crimea situation FIBA decided to award the hosting of EuroBasket 2015 to 4 different countries: France,Croatia,Germany and Latvia. There are 4 groups each held in a different country. Each group has 6 groups and the Top 4 of every group will advance to round 2. Now let's introduce you to the groups:
Group A
Russia
Bosnia and Herzegovina
France
Finland
Poland
Israel
This group will be held in Montpellier in France. The absolute favorite of this Group is France. The other 5 teams are expected to fight till the last matchday for their chance to become a 2nd round team. France are the current Euro champions and they are the team with most appearances in Eurobasket. This will be their 37th appereance. On the opposite site of the spectrum the country with least appereances (of all the teams in this group) is Bosnia and Herzegovina with 9. Group B will be held in Berlin,Germany. This is the "group of death" and the biggest matches of the group stage will definitely come from this group. The top 4 teams from GroupB will play against the top 4 teams of GroupA in the 2nd round.
Group B
Iceland
Turkey
Spain
Serbia
Germany
Turkey
Now on paper this should be a nightmare group. But even so..there are more everyone but Italy and Iceland should finish top4. Iceland are complete underdogs in the competition as this is their FIRST EVER appearance in EuroBasket history, and luck definitely wasn't on their side. Spain are definitely one of the favorites to win the EuroBasket so it can be expected that the Spaniards will finish top4 (probably top2) in this group. However..the rest of the group is tricky. Serbia is definitely one of the better teams in this group hoping for maybe even an eventual semi-final appearance in the EuroBasket. To do so they must prove themselves in the group stage. Germany may not be the team they once were but they play at home so they are definitely a threat. Turkey are dangerous team that can definitely cause some problems to the "big names" while Italy can not be ignored even though they are not the biggest country in basketball right now Now we move on to Group C. Someone dubbed this the "Balkan group" seeing the participants in the group, but the #1 favorite in this group is Greece.
Group C
Greece
Croatia
Slovenia
Macedonia
Georgia
Netherlands
Lead by Antetokoumpo, the Greek squad hopes to come back to the top of European basketball. However they'll have to prove themselves first in a tricky group. This group is played in Croatia and its capital Zagreb, so definitely the Croats might want to have a say in the top position of the group.Seeing the names of the other countries it can be expected Greece-Croatia in the middle of Zagreb to be an amazing match that will decide the #1 team in the group. The Slovenians lead by Zoran (Goran is not part of the EuroBasket) Dragic will definitely provide some problems for Croatia or Greece but until the matches begin the Slovenians are supposed to end up 3rd or 4th (at least on paper) A repeat from the Cinderella story in 2011 is not on the cards for the Macedonian squad this year. The Macedonians are playing their 5th EuroBasket ever and are going to have a mixed squad of youth and experience that hopefully will bring them a 2nd round entrance. The Macedonian former "Hawk" Pero Antic is not going to be part of Macedonian's squad for EuroBasket 2015. However Gerogia lead by Zaza Pachullia would definitely like to sneak in the top4 positions so Slovenia and Macedonia should be extra careful when playing against them. The Netherlands on paper are the weakest team in the group, but you can bet your ass they will give 110% to do something great if given the chance. The top 4 teams from Group C will play against the top 4 teams from Group D. The Group D will be held in Riga, the capital of Latvia.
Group D
Latvia
Estonia
Lithuania
Ukraine
Belgium
Czech Republic
The baltic group of the EuroBasket is supposed to be the weakest group of the championship. On paper that is. But in reality starting tomorrow we can expect great matches between teams using the group as an amazing chance to become the biggest surprise of this year's EuroBasket But don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean that there are weak teams in this group...Lithuania is #1 favorite in this group and the Lithuanians might even hope for a deep run in this year's EuroBasket. Ukrane ended up 6th on the last EuroBasket and they even played at the World Championship. Can the Ukranians shine bright again ? From the other 4 teams in the group definitely you have to count on the Latvians. The host of this group will surely want to make their "lucky" 13th appearance on the European Championship mean something especially when they'll play their matches in front of 11.000 screaming Latvians hungry for success. After the previous year and the concept of "2nd round group" this year we're getting a "round of 16" as a 2nd round. Meaning the first team of A will play again the 4th team of Group B. The second placed team in Group A will play against the 3rd placed team from Group B and so on. This should prove for some exciting matchups in the 2nd round especially in the A1-B4 matchup. The best 2 teams of the Championship qualify for the Olympics and teams that placed 3rd,4th,5th,6th and 7th will represent Europe at the Final Qualifying tournament for the Olympics. Records that might be broken at EuroBasket 2015: -Best scorer of European Championship (from now on to be refered as EC): The current best scorer of all time is Nikos Galis (Greece) with 1033 points in 33 played matches at EC. However it is expected this record to be broken. Tony Parker and Dirk Nowitzki need 37 (Parker) and 50(Nowitzki) to become the new #1. -Most NBA players in an EC tournament This year there are 28 NBA players in the EuroBasket making it the EC with most NBA players -Most appearances at EC Tony Parker has best chance to become the 2nd best in this category. The current list of players with most appearances in EC matches: 1: Kresimir Cosic (Yugoslavia) 69 (heh)
Mihaj Nedef (Romania) 64
Tony Parker (France) 59
If France gets at least in the semi-finals Tony Parker will end up this EC (assuming he will play all matches) with 67 appearances. -Most awards MVP of EC So far only one player won 2 MVP awards at EC. The Yugoslavian Kresimir Cosic won it in 1971 and 1975. Of the current top dogs Nowitzki,Gasol and Parker won it once. So if Spain or France reprise their 2011 finals it can be expected that Pau Gasol or Tony Parker will join Cosic on this list. So...that's it for the EuroBasket intro thread. The Championship begins tomorrow and here are the top matches (on paper): Group A: Izrael-Russia: So far Russia is a mystery. All we know is that one game they can play well and in another one they can lose by 20 points difference. On paper Russia are favorites but Izrael will definitely look for a way to surprise the Russians. Group B: It's hard to pick only one but.. Spain-Serbia: These 2 national teams have quite a history between each other, always providing entertaining matches. Who can forget the Serbian upset at the World Championship in 2010 when Serbia defeated Spain with a last second 3pt shot. Spain are favorites in this one but just barely as Serbia is definitely a team that can win this match and no one will be shocked. Group C: Croatia-Slovenia: The Balkanian derby should provide some quality entertainment in Zagreb. The Croatians are the better team on paper. They play at home so everything says that they will win the match...but..if there's a team that knows how to play against Croatia that's definitely Slovenia. These 2 countries met 4 times so far. 3 times Slovenia won and only once Croatia was on the winning side in an over time match. Group D: Lithuania-Ukraine The best 2 teams of Group D meat each other in the first round. I already said that Lithuania is absolute favorite in the "Baltic" group and even if they play the 6th placed team in the last EuroBasket everything but a win from Lithuania will be considered a huge upset. So...there you go, I hope you enjoyed this introduction as it was time consuming, but at least I had fun. Do you plan on watching the EuroBasket and what's your prediction ? Who will win and who will provide the biggest upset in the tournament ?

Threes in Charlotte: How the Hornets Have Revamped Their Offense - a look at some creative sets the Hornets have started to use with examples, videos and GIFs
Last year the Charlotte Hornets offense scored 97.6 points per 100 possessions (per NBA.com) which was the third worst mark in the league. The team’s starting line-up featured two players, Al Jefferson and Gerald Henderson, whose outdated games would have fit well in the 1980s, Kemba Walker and Cody Zeller who are worse at shooting the ball than the average player of their position and a person who is ignore-able outside the paint in Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. The disadvantage we got ourselves into with our shot selection was put in context quite nicely by John Schuhmann. “The Hornets ranked 26th in regard to what percentage of their shots came from the restricted area and 24th in regard to what percentage of their shots came from 3-point range.” “The Hornets were the first team since we started tracking shot locations in 1996-97 to rank last in both 3-point percentage and field goal percentage in the restricted area.” It has been proven that there is correlation between successful three-point shooting and having a good offense. Five of the top-7 (Rockets, Cavaliers, Warriors, Clippers and Hawks) leaders in three-point attempts for the 2014-15 season reached the conference semi-finals. The Portland Trail Blazers, ranked third in this category, were a low-key Western contender which had its season ruined after Wesley Matthews tore his Achilles. (The Philadelphia 76ers were also a part of this top-7). Chris Baker and Steve Shea did a fantastic job at mathematically proving that the more 3-point threats a team has out there, the less help defenders a team faces when penetrating. More long-range threats on the court also improve a team’s offensive rating. Thus it is encouraging to see that the Charlotte Hornets have attempted 25.6 three-pointers per game during the 2015-16 preseason, which would have been good for the eighth most three-reliant team in the league last season (it’s safe to say though that the upward trajectory of more threes being taken league-wide will resume this year and that such a mark won’t land you in the top-10 this coming season). That number was at 19.1 last season. It is an improvement that had to be made for a flawed offensive team. A stat that I have mentioned beforehand is the fact that not long ago our franchise record for threes taken in one game was almost 20 years old. On March 8th, 1996 Glen Rice and Larry Johnson combined for 19 three-point field goal attempts en route to a overtime loss at Orlando. The team’s overall 31 three-pointer attempts was a franchise record. Only in the last week of the 2014-15 season the Charlotte Hornets team managed to break the record (32 attempts against Houston) and then settle one attempt above it (33 attempts in Toronto). This preseason the team has managed to approach that record of ’96 two more times. These games point to a philosophical approach of paying more attention to that aspect of the game and, moreover, indicate how old-fashioned our offense has been these last few years, given the fact that the record was that old to begin with. The offensive transformation has been visible when watching the offensive sets the Hornets have been using. The focus of putting our players in places from where they can spot up for threes is there. Here are a few of the ways the team has been doing that. Having Guards Pop Out During a Pick-n-Roll: Rookie Frank Kaminsky has been popping out to the three-point line a whole lot. And that’s what you should do with a seven-footer who is such a gifted shooter and playmaker. When he sets the on-ball screen it usually turns into a pick-n-pop. When the other big is used for the pick-n-roll, Kaminsky will slide out from the paint to the three-point line to create space for the rim-runner by forcing his defender to either leave the paint or giving up an open three. This is normal, everyday NBA stuff (which we didn’t have the personnel to do last year): https://lamarmatic.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/insta1.gif What’s more fun and unique is that we have used our two-guards (Troy Daniels, P.J. Hairston, Jeremy Lamb and Aaron Harrison) in a similar manner. They will go on to stand in the same position underneath the basket but first will set a screen on the big man’s defender on their way there (a detail that I very much like as it complicates the defense’s task of dealing with the pick-n-roll as you’re in a catch-up situation from the very start). Here’s Daniels setting a screen on Spencer Hawes‘s man as Hawes is heading up to play the pick-n-roll: https://lamarmatic.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/vlcsnap-2015-10-24-22h49m04s162.png Then as the pick-n-roll is set off Daniels sprints out behind the three-point line: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCDF4LghaUY It not only puts a very good shooter in a comfortable spot but once again messes with the defender’s mind. Firstly, he has to wonder how to help-defend the two players involved in the pick-n-roll who are coming right at him. And, secondly, he all of the sudden has to leave the paint and ignore those two players to chase his own assignment. I bet that during the season some opponents will be caught asleep as they mismanage the situation and don’t chase out the shooter. A play which I might like even more is sort of a reverse set when compared to the previous one. In this case the shooter goes behind the pick-n-roll and sets a back-screen on the defender whose man is the pick-n-roll screen setter. Here’s an example of Aaron Harrison being ready to confuse rookie Myles Turner: https://lamarmatic.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/vlcsnap-2015-10-24-23h00m18s238.png Then, just as in the previous case, he’ll pop out behind the three-point line. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYz-2J2c2rc The genius of this play is that pretty much forces the defense to make uncomfortable switches. If the screen hits the defending big man good enough to block his backwards movement, the ball handler is in a good spot to use that to his advantage and drive past him to the rim. Spain abused Lithuania with this play in the final of EuroBasket 2015 as Jonas Valanciunas was stopped in his tracks by the back-screen and his teammates weren’t ready to make the quick switch and prevent penetration. In this case, Rodney Stuckey has the awareness to make the switch and step in front of Brian Roberts, the ball handler: https://lamarmatic.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/vlcsnap-2015-10-24-23h08m54s13.png But that also leaves Myles Turner on Aaron Harrison, who has already visions of making a three-pointer in his mind as he looks for a spot behind the three-point line. And that’s exactly what happens. Brian Roberts smartly tilts Turner his way and forces him to retreat to the paint just as Harrison lines up for the shot: https://lamarmatic.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/vlcsnap-2015-10-24-23h11m38s102.png The Three Base-Line Screens Another play we have relied on heavily to get in our offense is what I jot down in my ever-present game notes as the “Mo Play”. It appeared as a somewhat regular feature of our playbook last February when Mo Williams first tried on a Hornets jersey. At its basis it is a very simple set that consists of three base-line screens for a guard. When the first screen catches the designated defender by surprise, a lack of communication from the rest of the two can generate a quite good look at a corner three: https://lamarmatic.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/insta.gif An opportunity to get free for a jumpshot is exactly the purpose with which our gatling gunners like Jeremy Lamb and Troy Daniels will mostly approach the play: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozPyce5mMSI Though it isn’t all about taking a shot right off the bat. First off, this isn’t a play impossible to stop. The alignment of the three screeners makes for crowded space and the man guarding the last player to set a screen (in this case it is Nikola Mirotic) can somewhat easily out-stretch his arm and step out to prevent a direct pass to the corner: https://lamarmatic.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/vlcsnap-2015-10-24-23h19m32s251.png However, it doesn’t necessarily need to be all about looks at threes. It can ultimately be used for a curl to the middle by a capable ball handler to force the defense to shift towards him. Ultimately, this was used as a way to get Mo Williams in motion for a pick-n-roll as well. Expect Jeremy Lin and Nicolas Batum to be used in this play. It gives them the opportunity of driving to the middle with a decent array of options available for them. The set enables us to use our two ball-handler (consisting of at least two of Kemba Walker, Lin and Batum) line-ups more efficiently and put them in a position where both can work off each other. Such changing of sides of the court is what our anemic offense desperately lacked last year. Just look how easier it is to enter the ball in the post to Al Jefferson (side-note – we seem to have added some plays centered around inserting the ball in the post to Al, will probably follow-up on this some time in the future) when we’ve got the attention of the defense on the other side of the court beforehand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aG4ySsfOpVE This is a much-needed breath of fresh air after forcing the same valiant Gerald Henderson cross-screen for Al a dozen times per game last season. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnzVKorbevE Constantly doing this is just too static and easy to predict. The set is a symbol of attempting to play in a 90s style when the defense is already in 2015. Such a way to insert the ball in the paint is dying out and rightfully so. It is too easy for defenses to crowd the paint and force our offense to struggle with getting Jefferson the ball. The three-screens play shown previously or the following play (with Nicolas Batum in the role of a pop-out guard during a pick-n-roll) has the potential of a better success rate since the post-up is a by-product of a different set where player movement requires attention and you can’t focus all of your energy on preventing a Gerald Henderson cross-screen which everybody in the arena is anticipating: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teu2ow0dEx0 The Pick-N-Roll/Frank Kaminsky Back-Screen I already touched on this cool feature the last time I published my preseason observations. To recap, with Frank Kaminsky stationed underneath the basket we run a pick-n-roll. The second the ball handler drives past his pick, Kaminsky sprints to the corner through a screen set by the wing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NELixD2yMRE The power forward guarding him has to contemplate what to do about the seven-footer rolling to the front of the rim, the three-point threat who just left the premises to find an open look and why life is so hard in general. Additionally, if a wing wants to help out on Kaminsky he is likely to be held back by that screen. P.J. Hairston demonstrated what might happen when a good defensive team takes such situations for granted and is capable of switching on-the-fly. This time we ran a very similar play, only with Kaminsky already behind the three-point line on the weak side. A back-screen was set on Kaminsky’s man (Taj Gibson) while the pick-n-roll was executed and Gibson seemingly has to find himself in the a fore-mentioned dilemma: https://lamarmatic.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/vlcsnap-2015-10-23-00h56m47s42.png Following Frank and leaving his team to guard the pick-n-roll 2-on-2 wouldn’t be right. Yet the passing angle for Lin to find Frank the Tank is right there. For a short time period it feels like Chicago is smart enough to make the switch in a fraction of a second by having Doug McDermott commit to Kaminsky. However, Hairston instantly pops out behind the three-point line himself catching the trained rim protector by surprise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjhEla-UQMM If the previous two examples were moreso side-actions we can also put Kaminsky on the strong side of the ball and go to him on purpose with the help of such a screen while a pick-n-roll is being run. On this play the pick-n-roll is only a mean through which we get the ball to Kaminsky: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AtBG0urAjA Frank’s shooting is a huge weapon and it’s great to see that we’re adding small, off-ball sprinkles based on his talent around our main action to muck up the plans of defenses. Such plays have the potential of making the Hornets much more unpredictable on offense. It goes back to what I had to say about last year’s team and how they were built overall: “You can create so much by simply having dangerous offensive players like Dirk. A shooter having some side-action on the weak-side off the court that keeps the defenses attention, a guard on whom you can’t go under the screen, etc. Players who have a certain skill at a good level have to be respected when put in screen situations. In the case of our starting five, defenses aren’t concerned about any of our players. Nobody cares that Hendo is coming off a pin-down, worst thing that can happen is an open mid-range shot. Nobody cares about Zeller in “horns”. Let him have that 18-foot look. The sets aren’t creative but you also need certain players to make those sets look good. They lose their appeal and don’t force defenses to make difficult judgments when the players involved aren’t ones that you are concerned about leaving.” This year we have said players with those certain skills at a good enough level. The team’s front-court has undergone a defense-to-offense revamp by losing rim protector Bismack Biyombo and adding marksmen Kaminsky and Spencer Hawes. Meanwhile, Nicolas Batum and Jeremy Lin are above average at shooting threes (Batum’s last season notwithstanding) and passing the ball, while Gerald Henderson was mostly good at taking so many fade-away twos that both of his last two seasons qualified for the top20 of the aptly named PISS-Poor Shot Selection stat, created by the awesome Stephen Shea and Christopher Baker. The bet that we’re making here is that our influx of offensive talent improves our offense more than the lost players meant for our defense. Unfortunately, the only problem at this point is that Michael Kidd-Gilchrist also is lost for this season. Without him this transaction looks much more uncertain. It’s up for coach Clifford to get the new players accustomed to his conservative defense so the drop-off there wouldn’t be much to steep. Meanwhile, I would say that finishing 15th in offensive rating and being an average NBA scoring team would be a huge step in the right direction. The players and sets are certainly promising for us to produce a more watchable and contemporary offense. We’ll see whether that will also translate to much better production. "In the friendly match against team Lithuania (Aug. 19) Porzingis injured his knee, therefore has not been able to join the team and play against Romania and Chezh Republic. Team's head coach Bagatskis was yet unable to give particular information regarding when Porzingis could be in line with the team. "I will not give any coments. We have 6 days left to train, we will see. Anyway, till the departure to Istanbul we will remain in the current roster, as Ojars Silins and Kristaps Porzingis will not be able to train with the team in upcoming days. We will see what the situation will be like. Kristaps has been advised by the doctors, and he can not play yet. He wants and seeks to play, but the inner senses can be insincere. We will wait for doctor recommendations on when he will be able to train and play." tells Bagatskis."

Another Greek Giannis interview, with John Hammond and Greg Foster.
So i bought the today's Sport Day sports paper ( Greek one) and it got a huge interview with Giannis, Hammond foster while it talks about Sweeney,Parker,Kidd and even Charles Garden. Il starτ with Giannis. The Greek reporting and writing this is called Pavlos Depolas ( Παυλος Δεπολλας) . For Better formatting and such read at : http://www.brewhoop.com/2016/12/14/13958354/another-greek-giannis-interview-with-john-hammond-and-greg-foster It was the morning of a game day between Bucks and Nets at Brooklyn. Few minutes before the ending of the Bucks closed practice when the door finally opens. Everyone, even the Australian colleague ( who came for his compatriot Mathew Dellavedova ) and our own... neighbor ( from Gazztta dello Sport who is mainly stationed in New York) fell upon the <>, the only player that had besides him a team personnel ( Sweeney) taking some notes on his tablet. We started the talk in Greek. P.D: "Even after the end of practice it seems the work never stops" we ask. G.A "Thats right,Shawn Sweeney helps me a lot and there always should be room to ...gather information" said Giannis before he starts his interview. G.A "Im absolutely pleased with situation on the Bucks and that shows it on my game" said Giannis. A game that has transformed him into one of the most hot names in the NBA : 22 points, 9 rebound , 6 assists and lots of flirting with triple double .In all this, we also got him when he was voted ans the Easter Player of the Week! G.A "I don't like to talk about me, through the wins of my team i will reach even higher."said the leader of the <> ,who are on the road to the play offs with a record of 11-12. P.D "Will you manage to return to play offs ?" G.A "We hope so, we got good fundamentals in all places and we will give everything till the end " P.D "What are you working on at the moment ?" G.A "Whatever i can. There are still lots of room for my personal growth and improvement . In Free Throws for example its evident . " P.D " What about the three pointers?" G.A "Im working on it daily and im not afraid to shoot anymore" P.D "Your name is heavily implied in the All star Game..." G.A "I don't bother with it , if it comes it comes, thats it " P.D "Will you manage to come this summer for the next Eurobasket ?" G.A "No matter how hard my program is the National Team is something i think about all the time and i want to join it in Finland as long of course i got my health in tact and all will happen. " Giannis then proceeds to talk about his connections with other Greek friends . G.A "yeah i still talk with them especially the guys from Filaflitikos, Kamperidis,Gika...."" P.D "Thanasis as well we assume..." G.A "of course, i never had doubt that my brother would do fantastic in Andora". After a small farewell and new planned meeting after the game which the bucks star lead the team with 23 points , 8 rebounds, 8 assists towards the win. Once again everyone at the locker room got their eyes on Giannis. P.D " Are the two three pointers more important or the 0 turnovers ?" we managed to ask him.. G.A "Even if i had 6 turnovers the win is the only thing that matters, everyone makes mistakes" P.D " Talent or work is the secret ( for success) " G.A "Work, only by working you become better as you go" That said an extremely talented alien athlete ! John Hammond reminiscences on teen Antetokounmpo and bets on how far he will go. Yes, it was John Hammond. The general manger of the Bucks, best in the season 2009-2010 ,when he got the award. We are talking about the same person that <> later on the treasure in the Antetokounmpo by making many more trips in Greek A2 courts watching him. In 2013 he had no hesitation to give the 15th pick for an unknown player from Filaflitikos who was still underage! Risk ? "My work always got risk but in case of Giannis he managed quickly to justify our trust."said the 62 years old GM,while taking few moments to eat his delicious cake. J.H " His bodywork and the room of improvement were recommending an amazing project and i wasnt afraid taking him despite his age. He was always focus and decisive to work hard in order to become a top class player" Which happen. He then continues.. " its a mutual relationship , we are growing as a team and together Giannis grows with us.he likes us and we like him.He is adding to his game more things, reducing his early mistakes that the used to make when he first joined the NBA .... P.D "So whats left in order for him to become an established super star in the league ? "we rudely intrude. J.H " He needs to become a dangerous outside shooter. He needs to add the three point shot to his arsenal . If that happens , which i believe it will then the minimum we gonna expect from him is gonna be continuous visit to the all star games." Said Hammond as he raises the expectation sky high. The greatest talent hunter and producer was also called John Hammond, which introduced to the people from Bob Dylan to Bruce Springsteen. This own tho will have as discovery of his career a kid from Sepolia.... Greg Foster remembers his run at Papagou ( Greek team) and explain how Giannis is.... on fire! It was one hour before the jumpball we saw a familiar face on the court . Yes, it was Greg Foster, the center from Papagou in season 1993-1994. The era where even the smallest A1 teams were drawing attention from even NBA talent. Some coincidence that same Greg Foster at age of 48 is at the same team as the Greek star of Milwaukee . G.F "Maybe its my fate to work alongside with people from this magnificent country ""his first comment as we introduced to him. later on as the game ended we managed to speak to him at the locker room. G.F " Giannis is a kid that always wants to learn new things . that is the reason why he shows such an amazing improvement in such small time. The most important for me is that he is very intelligent player, you tell him one thing and he understands much more. Not many players got such great perception ..." P.D "So how are you days living and working with him ?" G.F "Unfortunately ... he is working mainly on the perimeter so we dont have many personal or specific training but because of his height sometime sim couching him as well and all i can say is that he is a hard worker and got the right mentality to become a great player" P.D"What about your memories in Greece ?" G.F "We had a family clime at Papagou.I was hanging out with my colleague Tod Mitchel and i was surprised how many big names were gathered together. One Saturday i was playing against James Donaldson , another it was against Roy Tarpley...." All that from someone that played in ten NBA teams and won the championship with the Lakers in 2001.
French NBA players and the French National Team - What do you think of them?
Hi nba, Eurobasket just started as i'm typing this. The french team being a contender on this championship. I wanted to tell people all over the world about french players, especially those playing in the NBA. Those are obviously talked a lot in France, but I wanted to know what the rest of the world thinks about them. Let's Get Started: The most famous ones -Tony Parker, San Antonio Spurs Obviously, he's the most known player in France & around the world. Not much to tell you about him except what most of you already know. Starting PG for the Spurs since the beginning of his career, multiple NBA champion & All-Star, Finals MVP... He has only made progress year after year until 1 or 2 years ago, mainly because he reached the age where is ceiling is, and because of injuries. He truly is our basketball ambassador, & the one that got many french players interested in basketball in the first place. One of the best european to ever play in the Association. Most of us french basketball addicts would love to see him win one last title with Pop, Tim & Manu. Doesn't have many haters here playing-wise. Quick guy with the ball, very good finishing around the rim despite not being very physical, smart player, runs the Spurs offense perfectly, developped a good mid range shot. Weaknesses are his not very good 3-point shooting... & he's clearly not the best defender you'll see at his position, despite doing ok in Pop's defensive system. Side note: He only needs to score 8 points to become the all-time Euro leading scorer. He has 996 points, Nick Galis is ahead with 1004. Nowitzki is 3rd with 983. -Boris Diaw, San Antonio Spurs (all the following might be biased, and if so, i'm sorry but can't help it) My personal favorite. One of my favorite ball player EVER. He's the captain of the french National Team, and some of us call him "Le Président" (the President). I think he still is sort of underrated by many people. This guy is a Basketball Machine. He can just do it all. Play & defend well multiple positions, handle & shoot the ball, drive, face-up game, post up back to the basket, create for others, huge BBIQ... His main weakness being his mentality as a player. He's a pass-first guy, & most of us french fans think he could be a more valuable player by sometimes playing more for himself & less for others, being more aggressive... But i guess that's just how he is, and can't help it. All my love for you, Babac... -Joakim Noah, Chicago Bulls All-star,Dpoy, multiple playoff appearances... Quite famous in the USA, played in NCAA there, starting center (maybe not anymore?) for the chicago bulls... The Ultimate hype guy. His main basketball skills consists of clapping & yelling. Oh and he's also a very good defender because of his mobility and smartness defensively. Had a terrible offensive year last season, hopefully he'll get better.... A double-double guy with an above average defense and the kind of player you prefer to have with you than against. He's respected in France, but many people shit on him for not coming to play with the national team since the Euro 2011. My opinion is that's his choice, & we can win this thing without him. -Rudy Gobert, Utah Jazz Rudy, Rudy... the tall guy with infinite arms made waves last year, didn't he? I think that french people as much as others are both amazed & curious about him. How far can he go? What can he achieve? It felt good to see this guy come out of nowhere and being one of the main subjects of fans and journalists for a while. Go on Rudy, we're with you! I think he can become-if he's not already- one of the best defender in the game as a center. Wanna bet? -Nicolas Batum, Charlotte Hornets Most of us french fans love the guy, but most of us are also disappointed. So much potential, but here again, not aggressive enough.... Interesting profile. Can do many things on offense & is one of the top defenders at his position, but the good mindset seems to be lacking. We still believe in him. In the Euro, we need him to be aggressive. We need his points. I could even say he's supposed to be our top scorer. If he doesn't show uplike we expect him to, things are gonna be waaaay more difficult against top European teams... NBA Players: -Evan Fournier, Orlando Magic Good offensive guy, good shooting, good percussion. Needs to improve on defense. My guess is he can become a good 6th man in the NBA. During the Euro, he'll be our #1 option on offense off the bench. I hope he manages to be consistent, because he's capable of the worst & the best. -Ian Mahinmi, Indiana Pacers Ok backup center. Lacks of offensive skills but pretty good defender and good energy guy. Isn't afraid to go at it & do the dirty work. -Kevin Séraphin, New York Knicks Never had much playing time in his years with the Wizards, but still we know him pretty well: a good offensive inside player with a godly hookshot... with a tendency to rely on it too much, even in situations where he just has to do something else that hook that shit in the direction of the basket. Pretty bad defender, too many fouls... Hopefully he'll get more playing time with the Knicks, then let's see what he can bring on the court. -Alexis Ajinça, New Orleans Pelicans 2m16 of offensive finesse. Can contribute to the scoring in many ways, if given the chance to... very good with his back to the basket. Unfortunately, not consistent/skillful enough to play NBA level defense, and here again, too much fouls in general. -Joffrey Lauvergne, Denver Nuggets Just arrived. Very mobile Power Forward with lots of energy. Always active, moves a lot on offense. Doesn't really have a scoring kit but I think he can be decent coming off the bench in the NBA. Starter for the national team. Guys that swung by but couldn't stay in the NBA: -Mickaël Gélabale One of the most beloved man in the national team. 3&D player, thinks for the team & only for the team. Played in the NBA for the Sonics (2006-2008) & the T-Wolves (2013). Was not bad at all, but playing in Europe fits him more. -Rodrigue Beaubois A comboguard with a very good potential, but injuries, injuries, injuries... I think many Mavericks fan are still sad about him... -Nando de Colo Starting 2-guard for the national team. Very versatile on offense, can do many things. Serious on the defensive side, but lacks the physicality to be really efficient. Played in the NBA, mainly for the Spurs, but never got real playing time & went back to Europe where, I think, he belonged. -Ronny Turiaf The bench man every team would love to have. Doesn't have lot to bring on the court, but brings it all, and hypes everyone like it's the last ball game to ever be played. That one guy you probably never heard of: -Flo Piétrus Yes, he is Mike Piétrus' brother, for those who remember the guy. Is a part of the french "big three" of this french generation, along with Tony & Boris. Undersized PF with outstanding energy & awesome interior defender. Smart player, sacrifices for the team, a coach's delight & a fan's favorite. -Bonus: The Mastermind I know you never heard of: -Vincent Collet Coach for the national Team. Year after year, championship after championship, summer after summer, he built the mindset for this team, created the mentality needed to win at the highest level... Until his team got the gold at the last Euro. Many people were bashing him before that Euro, but seems like most of them changed their minds since... Shoutouts to Coach Collet for his outstanding work! So, non-french ballers of Reddit? What's your opinion about them? What do you expect from the Euro in general, and the french team in particular? I'm interested in your opinions. TL;DR: The french team is gonna kick asses in the Euro (Edit: Formatting)
