The Cypriot League- Successful or Harmful

Cyprus are the 39th best European national team and the 87th best team in the world according to FIFA rankings (admittedly, a flawed system). This ranking is fairly logical when looking at the circumstances of the Island nation. First off, they have a small population for a European country, coming in at an island wide population of 1 million but is more accurately only able to pull from 850,000, as the Island is split into two separate territories (with a complex history). Along with this the Republic of Cyprus is not a rich nation, having the 36th largest GDP in Europe and being in considerable debt. The previously mentioned factors are also compounded by the long-term conflict which has occurred on the island. Football and politics have often come together to bring the worst out of each other and Cyprus is not an exception to that expectation.
Despite the country having a poor national team, a small population and a disappointing economic situation, the national league in the country can be viewed as somewhat successful. They are ranked as 19th in Uefa coeffiency while also being the 24th most valuable top division in European football. While 19th and 24th may seem like a meagre improvement upon their national team ranking, those league rankings put them in the middle of Israel and Poland in coeffiency and Israel and Sweden in league value. It puts them in a bracket of football nations who they should not realistically be able to compete with. The teams are also putting in competent performances in European competitions as Apoel demonstrated in this year’s champions league when they achieved two draws against Dortmund, while losing every other game (against Real Madrid and Spurs tbf). The year before that they also finished in the round of 16 in the Europa League losing out to another underdog, Anderlecht. The question must be posed: why does the league succeed in spite of all other factors being against it.
Well, the answer can be put quite simply: they paid more for more success. The league has an astoundingly high foreign player percentage at 57.1% which puts them well ahead of those around them in the league valuation table (outside of Scotland who have an impressive 44%) and sees them double the number of foreign players employed by leagues of a similar population (most being spread between 10% and 30%). When looking within the league itself, it becomes obvious to see that the teams who employs more of these foreign players, finds greater success (unsurprisingly)-
League Finish Club Foreign Players (Total Players) Club Value- €mil
1 APOEL 21(29) 23
2 Apollon Lim 20(30) 18
3 Anorthosis 17(26) 12
4 AEK 19(26) 11
5 AEL Lim 16(27) 11
6 Omonia Nik 17(29) 12
7 Doxa Katokopias 14(23) 6
8 Ermis Aradippou 16(23) 6
9 Pafos 18(26) 8
10 Nea Salamis 13(26) 4
11 Alki Oroklini 14(26) 5
12 Olympiakos 8(26) 4
13 Aris Lim 11(24) 4
14 Ethnikos 3(20) 2
However, this unusual setup has had other side effects that have not been desirable for Cypriot fans. To start simply, the national team has not profited from the increased competition which has become the norm in, what should be, a good place for the development of young players. It’s hard to sneak minutes in a team which often sees competent, cultured and proven foreign players making their way into clubs who would usually never be able to aspire to those kinds of options. As of now, the national team is made up of 17 players plying their trade in the local league, so most Cypriots do not get a chance to move to other leagues to find their feet, unlike Northern Ireland which sees many players develop in an established English or Scottish system.
Overlooking of youth development has come back to bite some teams in the ass such as the, now relegated, Ethnikos Achnas. They were a team who often finished in the bottom half of the league but had found themselves over and under achieving at various points in their recent history. 2016-17 was not a bad season for them but the following summer was a nightmare as they lost 14 of their foreign players (I would assume for financial reasons). Most of these sales were on a free (as most of the leagues transfer dealings are) meaning that the players who came to replace the senior players were a mixture of loanees, U21s and 4 new signings. This left the club with a valuation of only €2 million, half of what the next team in the league was worth. It was unsurprising that this led to a season where they only achieved 8 points and were effectively relegated early in the year. This instability is rampant in the league, with Cyprus having the highest rate of signing new players in all of Europe at 57.7% between 2009-17. Players come in looking for decent wages and a chance to move on to better things, so when marginally better opportunity comes along they leave the club pretty quickly.
To compile further misery, the whole league appears to have issues financially, as if bringing players in for big wages and then selling them on for free isn’t a profitable model. It has led to some clubs in the league amassing a debt to the state, completely bypassing the Cypriot FA. The predictable solution appears to be the preferred outcome for many, as private football ownership trickles its way down to every crevice of modern football. Omonia is one club which has recently been bought out by a US businessman but this is a position that the club would never have expected to be in. Omonia is viewed, by some, as the people club with links to left wing politics that would logically make them opposed to any buyout of the club. Some fans have taken the step to start up the club anew in the lower divisions of Cypriot football while the old Omonia looks to pay off debt. For some, this is a welcome inclusion in the game as the real victim of this debt has been the public, who have had to pay for the debt which the clubs have accumulated. Those who had to pay the price for the financial stupidity of their local clubs will probably have little sympathy if the introduction of private ownership prevents further tax waste.
It may be unclear as to how these clubs were able to pull in these players in the first place when the money was not there in the first place. The answer, as it always seems be in football administration, is they did it illegitimately. From my limited understanding of the situation, the clubs used ‘black contracts’ to bring players in, which allowed them to pay less tax but also to not have to publicly announce the amount they are spending. Recently, players have begun to speak up on the matter as it became apparent that players were not given a copy of their contracts (which is what makes them 'black', as in 'unseen'- I think) which meant that clubs were not paying their full wages as players were unable to prove how much they should be getting payed. It is hard to see change come from within the country as the CFA looks like a drunken mess as well, staggering from one crisis to another. These crises range from the violence which has been seen within the stadiums, where club staff have been harmed during games or the possibility that the league is full of match-fixing, which Uefa has officially sent them a warning about (in one game). Worst of all is the way that the CFA has been unable to cope with the debt that the clubs face despite the new head of the CFA claiming that he would provide the league with €5 million to help the clubs. Following this claim, the CFA was complaining about the government decision to reduce income from betting gains that the CFA would receive. Apparently, the betting money was needed to provide for better insurance for players (50% of whom are on black contracts) despite there being €5 million in the back pocket to help the league’s debt issues, according to the head of the CFA.
While these problems exist, the league does overperform despite all its flaws. For now, some will probably be happy that they get to watch a league other countries would be happy to have but is any of it sustainable. It is hard to tell now, but the aftermath of these decisions may not be worth the time in the sun which some supporters enjoy. Is it worth the national team stagnating, clubs having no stability and players being cheated?

KLOPP 'HAD TO GET' KARIUS REPLACEMENT

The memory of the Champions League final meant Liverpool were forced into finding Loris Karius' replacement, says Graeme Souness.
The Reds' current No 1 made two costly errors as Liverpool lost 3-1 to Real Madrid in May, although Karius was later found to be suffering from concussion after taking a knock from Sergio Ramos shortly before the opening goal.
Regardless, Souness told Sky Sports News those errors would come back to haunt the German had he started 2018/19 as first-choice and made another mistake.
Liverpool are on the verge of signing Roma goalkeeper Alisson after a £67m bid was accepted, with the Brazilian flying to England on Wednesday evening to undergo a medical in the next few days, according to Sky in Italy.
"I think as much as Jurgen would have wanted to be loyal and do right by the goalkeeper, he's got to go out and get another one," he said. "That's simply because if Karius was to make the same mistake, or a mistake in a big game, it'd be down to the manager not correcting that situation. It's obvious to everyone - look at what happened in the Champions League final. So if Klopp is out to get Alisson or another top goalkeeper, he's doing the right thing."

JOSE: DALOT OUT UNTIL SEPTEMBER

Jose Mourinho has confirmed new Manchester United signing Diogo Dalot will be out until September with a knee injury.
The 19-year-old defender joined United on a five-year deal from Porto last month for a fee of around £19m. Dalot injured his knee late last season for Porto and was pictured on crutches in Manchester.
He travelled on United's pre-season tour of the USA despite not being cleared to return to training but Mourinho is happy with how his recovery is progressing.
Mourinho said: "Dalot is injured; we knew that but we didn't want to lose him because of that. He is recovering really well. We think he can start training with the team when we go back to England. He will not be ready for the start of the season but we think he'll be ready for September."

‘THERE WILL BE RIVALS FOR GOLOVIN’

CSKA Moscow's president Evgeniy Giner has warned Chelsea that rival clubs will be looking to sign Aleksandr Golovin.
Chelsea have been linked with Golovin over the summer and in his introductory press conference, new manager Maurizio Sarri said he may be interested in adding some midfield quality to the squad.
In an interview with Russian site sport24, Giner said there is no deal between the clubs but it is likely Golovin will be with a new club soon.
"I believe that [he] can grow into a big star," he said. "I'm not sure that this can happen in the Russian championship. The level of the English Premier League or the championship of Spain is much higher.
"In order not to ruin [him], we must let him go. But we have no solution for today. When we receive an offer, we always try to negotiate openly. Indeed, we were visited by the vice-president of Monaco [Vadim Vasilyev] and he made a proposal for Golovin. If we talk about Chelsea, then there is no closed agreement with them. But the question of his transition will be decided, I think, in the next couple of days."

"It is an honour for me to be here and fulfil the dream of every football player to sign for Real Madrid," Odriozola told a media conference. PARLOUR PRAISES WILSHERE

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour has praised Jack Wilshere for not taking the easy option of signing a new deal at the club just to sit on the bench.
Parlour said: "Jack Wilshere has made a big decision and it was his to make. He met the manager and realised he might have been third or fourth in the pecking order. As a player who has missed so much football, he needs to play.
"I'm gutted that he's left because I would love to see him still in an Arsenal shirt, but I'm really pleased he's gone to a club to play football because there is nothing worse than training hard all week and then sitting in the stands.
"West Ham have got a very good signing there. We always look at his fitness record, but if he can stay fit we all know how good he is. That is what West Ham have to manage now."

Stade Rennais are in talks over the loan deal of Tottenham’s Georges-Kevin N’Koudou, according to Sky sources.
The winger is available before Friday’s transfer deadline in several European countries, and he is considering his potential options.
Sky Sports News reported earlier this month that German club Mainz had agreed terms with Spurs over a loan with option-to-buy.

GERRARD ON MORELOS

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is hopeful Alfredo Morelos will sign a new deal to keep him at Ibrox.
Rangers have already rejected a £3.75m offer - understood by Sky Sports to be from Bordeaux - for the 22-year-old and Gerrard is keen to tie Morelos down to a new deal to ensure he remains at the club.
"I'm delighted for Alfredo. He's a very confident player anyway, he always believes he can deliver so it was no surprise for me to see him get a call-up Gerrard said ahead of Thursday's Europa League qualifying play-off against Russian side FC Uma.”

EUROPEAN DEADLINE?

The transfer window in Italy shut on August 25 but several others on the continent remain open.
Germany's transfer window shuts at 5pm UK time on Friday August 31.
The Russian window follows at 10pm, and Spain and France at 11pm.
The only clubs in a major European league which will be able to continue buying and selling players during September will be those in Portugal, whose transfer window stays open until September 21.

WHEN IS EFL LOAN DEADLINE?

Clubs can loan players until 5pm on Friday August 31, and temporary agreements can also include an option to buy when the winter window opens on January 1.

Martial has fallen out of favour at United under Mourinho and has been linked with a move away.

TOURE TEASE

Yaya Toure has agreed to move to Olympiakos, according to various national newspapers.
His agent Dimitry Seluk has teased fans on social media that his client had “passed a medical in London”.
However, a move to the capital following his release from Manchester City looks unlikely.
