Positions: None right now, there's some time before we may see action. Currently commons are trading at $11 and warrants are at $2.2, the warrants are pricey right now. I'm in HCAC and SPAQ at the moment but this seems to be the next short term play after, long term for me would be IPOC or PSTH. I'm betting on the leadership.
The bad: no real forward purchase or PIPE investors or any external funding, which is okay. could indicate that the team is confident in their strategy without the need for additional funding ($400 mil in their own investment)
My thought process: if TWNK came out in this current SPAC market, would we see a hype? 1000% I think they can choose slightly above average known consumer targets and we'll see strong price action.
EDIT: added some inst holdings

Game Software and selection

The online casino side of Bodog is supported by two separate software providers. While Real Time Gaming might not have the newest or shiniest games out there, it provides sufficient variation when it comes to all your favorite classics. Thanks to the use of RTG you get a wide choice of blackjack, baccarat, roulette, and video poker to keep you entertained. There are no live dealer games available at Bodog casino yet but there is a wide choice of everything else!
However, the real stars at Bodog are the Betsoft games. They are perfectly rendered movie-like creations, but besides feasting your eyes on them, you can also win money from them. It is a pretty sweet deal! In addition, Bodog offers a bunch of player guides to lead you through the process of picking a game, learning how to play it, and even following the etiquette of online casinos! And if that is not enough, every game has its own 'How to play' section and a detailed description, so you can go in prepared! Some of the slots that you have to try out are Cleopatra's Gold, Caesar's Empire and Madder Scientist, to name but a few.
It is important to note that Bodog does not cater to professional players, as can be seen in the amount of support and information they provide to their players, and the fact that the highest bets that one can make at one go do not go over C$500. This is a casino that caters specifically to recreational players, even giving them the facility to remain anonymous at the poker tables.

Bodog Poker Review

Online poker betting is a big feature of online gaming and Bodog offers a medium-sized poker room for fans of the game. While you can only play up to 15 tables simultaneously, that fits in with the ethos of the casino and its dedication to recreational players. When it comes to poker, Bodog also offers anonymous tables where no one know the others' online handle and everyone is given a number. In this way, the odds are evened out. This might not seem appealing to pro players but recreational players will find it a refreshing breath of air compared to other poker rooms. There is also a number of poker tournaments organized by Bodog poker room over the span of each year, which are a good place for more experienced players.
The thing about playing poker on Bodog is that if you do it from your computer, you have to download the Bodog app. That does have its advantages, as having the Bodog app allows you to also access the whole range of Bodog casino games, so once downloaded, you can play both poker, and everything else, straight from your computer. Signing up for Bodog's poker room can also make you eligible for a bonus of up to C$1,000, so it is a good place to start if you are a new player just getting into poker.

Bodog Sports review

Bodog sports betting is one of the best sites to go to if you are into betting on sports and you live in Canada. Football, basketball, hockey are all to be expected in a sportsbook but Bodog also offers political bets, and even wagers on topics connected to Entertainment. For example, you can bet on who will win Big Brother Brazil or who will be the next Game of Thrones character to die in the series! This makes Bodog the right side for betting if you are looking for something less ordinary.

Bodog Mobile review

To play on Bodog from your mobile device, all you have to do is open up your browser and sign up for a Bodog online casino account. Since the latest overhaul of the website there is no software to download for mobile use, which is great news for Apple devices! This also makes the casino lighter and easier to use than many of its competitors. Basically, any mobile device capable of running html5 can be used to place bets on Bodog. So if you have an iPhone or an Android you will be able to access your Bodog account and play online poker or place bets on horse racing. If you prefer your iPad or your Toshiba tablet, you will do just fine with the Bodog mobile site.
What if you don't own the latest iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy, or a Huawei P9? What if you are a Blackberry fan? Fear not, Bodog caters for you, too, with a mobile-optimized page that will open just right on your device screen! So even from your Blackberry, you can still partake in Bodog's mobile poker.

Banking options:

Bodog does not offer a wide range of accepted banking methods, but it accepts some of the most popular ones, which makes up for the lack of variety. You can always use your Visa or Mastercard for deposits, even if they are anonymous prepaid cards. Another major payment method for Bodog online casino is the instant e-check and still another the Interac e-transfer, which allows you to use your online banking services to deposit.
The top withdrawal method for Bodog is actually via check. Bodog issues up to one fee-free check a month for up to C$3,000. Recently, the casino also introduced Bitcoin and now they even offer a tutorial describing how to create an account and use Bitcoin for betting. This can be a good method if you prefer to remain anonymous.

Security and fair play

To begin with, Bodog is regulated in Antigua, one of the world's top gaming regulators. Your information is heavily encrypted by 128 bit SSL, and you can even play anonymously at the poker tables - a feature that is not present in any other large casinos.
In terms of fairness, Bodog applies the latest randomizing technology which ensures that the games are completely random and unpredictable and you have the same shot at winning as anyone else. In addition, the casino does not make money from your losses but by raking the pot, so it is to everyone's advantage for you to keep winning!

Promotions and customer support

Welcome bonus

Signing up to Bodog can earn you up to C$1,800 in bonuses if you follow the rules carefully. This is not a casino that will let you take home hundreds of thousands of dollars in winnings but it encourages its players to partake in all its different betting activities. To get the total of C$1,800 you need to bet at the bookmaking side of the website, the poker tables, and the slots, but even if you don't you will still get some bonuses for every part of the website you partake in. For example, signing up for the Bodog online casino can get you up to C$600 if you follow the conditions!

Loyalty program

Bodog has two separate loyalty programs. One is a point system directly linked to the amount of cash you bet on slots, casino games or blackjack. For example, for every C$10 you bet on slots, you get 2 points. And every 100 points give you a dollar in cash that you can then bet again.
The second program is the 94 Club, which is the VIP club for loyal members. It offers you extra rewards, bonuses, promotions and even events to exotic locations for being a member. You can get weekly bonuses and various giveaways as a member of the club.
>> Get Free Spins Now <<

Progressive jackpots

As mentioned, this is not a casino for pros, so the highest jackpots currently up for grabs in the slots section do not surpass 10K. Most of the jackpots won recently are below 50K, so this is not a place to go if you like the thrill of fighting for millions. However, as the website's Big Winners section shows, there are big winners in Bodog every day, so the odds of winning are larger than usual.

Customer support

Bodog online casino offers 24/7 customer care support in both email and phone format. The site is in English, Portuguese and Spanish and there are also multiple detailed tutorials that can guide you through standard processes, game rules and even online casino etiquette. So whatever you need, you will definitely find it somewhere through the site or the helpful customer support staff.

Bodog review in 2020: Conclusion

The Bodog website is a big place which offers a number of different types of gambling. It uses two types of game software, which makes its games more interesting and diverse, and it has strong customer support all around the clock. It accepts a sufficient number of payment methods, including Bitcoin, which is gaining popularity rapidly and offers some strong welcome bonuses to start you off.
It is only open to Canadian players, works in Canadian dollars, and it does not accept professional players but that means that if you are a Canadian beginner or a recreational player, this casino is made especially for you. And whether you are into horse betting, sports betting, casino or poker, Bodog will offer you the best service and betting options on the market.

What a USL D1 league might look like

TL;DR: Man with too much time on his hands goes deep down the rabbit hole on a concept this sub already didn’t seem that enthusiastic about. If you really want to skip ahead, CTRL+F “verdict” and it’ll get you there.
Two days ago, u/MrPhillyj2wns made a post asking whether USL should launch a D1 league in order to compete in Concacaf. From the top voted replies, it appears this made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.
But I’ve been at home for eight weeks and I am terribly, terribly bored.
So, I present to you this overview of what the USL pyramid might look like if Jake Edwards got a head of steam and attempted to establish a USSF-sanctioned first division. This is by no means an endorsement of such a proposal or even a suggestion that USL SHOULD do such a thing. It is merely an examination of whether they COULD.
Welcome to the Thunderdome USL Premiership
First, there are some base-level assumptions we must make in this exercise, because it makes me feel more scientific and not like a guy who wrote this on Sunday while watching the Belarusian Premier League (Go BATE Borisov!).
  1. All D1 teams must comply with known USSF requirements for D1 leagues (more on that later).
  2. MLS, not liking this move, will immediately remove all directly-owned affiliate clubs from the USL structure (this does not include hybrid ownerships, like San Antonio FC – NYCFC). This removes all MLS2 teams but will not affect Colorado Springs, Reno, RGVFC and San Antonio.
  3. The USL will attempt to maintain both the USL Championship and USL League One, with an eventual mind toward creating the pro/rel paradise that is promised in Relegations 3:16.
  4. All of my research regarding facility size and ownership net worth is correct – this is probably the biggest leap of faith we have to make, since googling “NAME net worth” and “CITY richest people” doesn’t seem guaranteed to return accurate results.
  5. The most a club can increase its available seating capacity to meet D1 requirements in a current stadium is no more than 1,500 seats (10% of the required 15,000). If they need to add more, they’ll need a new facility.
  6. Let’s pretend that people are VERY willing to sell. It’s commonly acknowledged that the USL is a more financially feasible route to owning a soccer club than in MLS (c.f. MLS-Charlotte’s reported $325 million expansion fee) and the USSF has some very strict requirements for D1 sanctioning. It becomes pretty apparent when googling a lot of team’s owners that this requirement isn’t met, so let’s assume everyone that can’t sells to people who meet the requirements.
(Known) USSF D1 league requirements:
- League must have 12 teams to apply and 14 teams by year three
- Majority owner must have a net worth of $40 million, and the ownership group must have a total net worth of $70 million. The value of an owned stadium is not considered when calculating this value.
- Must have teams located in the Eastern, Central and Pacific time zones
- 75% of league’s teams must be based in markets with at a metro population of at least 1 million people.
- All league stadiums must have a capacity of at least 15,000
The ideal club candidate for the USL Premiership will meet the population and capacity requirements in its current ground, which will have a grass playing surface. Of the USL Championship’s 27 independent/hybrid affiliate clubs, I did not find one club that meets all these criteria as they currently stand.
Regarding turf fields, the USSF does not have a formal policy regarding the ideal playing surface but it is generally acknowledged that grass is superior to turf. 6 of 26 MLS stadiums utilize turf, or roughly 23% of stadiums. We’ll hold a similar restriction for our top flight, so 2-3 of our top flight clubs can have turf fields. Seem fair?
Capacity is going to be the biggest issue, since the disparity between current requirements for the second-tier (5,000) and the first tier (15,000) is a pretty massive gap. Nice club you have there, triple your capacity and you’re onto something. As a result, I have taken the liberty of relocating certain (read: nearly all) clubs to new grounds, trying my utmost to keep those clubs in their current markets and –importantly--, ensure they play on grass surfaces.
So, let’s do a case-by-case evaluation and see if we can put together 12-14 teams that meet the potential requirements, because what else do you have to do?
For each club’s breakdown, anything that represents a chance from what is currently true will be underlined.
Candidate: Birmingham Legion FC
Location (Metro population): Birmingham, Ala. (1,151,801)
Time zone: Central
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Legion Field (FieldTurf, 71,594)
Potential owner: Stephens Family (reported net worth $4 billion)
Notes: Birmingham has a pretty strong candidacy. Having ditched the 5,000-seater BBVA Field for Legion Field, which sits 2.4 miles away, they’ve tapped into the city’s soccer history. Legion Field hosted portions of both the men’s and women’s tournaments at the 1996 Olympics, including a 3-1 U.S. loss to Argentina that saw 83,183 pack the house. The Harbert family seemed like strong ownership contenders, but since the death of matriarch Marguerite Harbert in 2015, it’s unclear where the wealth in the family is concentrated, so the Stephens seem like a better candidate. The only real knock that I can think of is that we really want to avoid having clubs play on turf, so I’d say they’re on the bubble of our platonic ideal USL Prem.
Candidate: Charleston Battery
Location (Metro population): Charleston, S.C. (713,000)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Johnson Hagood Stadium (Grass, ~14,700)
Potential owner: Anita Zucker (reported net worth $3 billion)
Notes: Charleston’s candidacy isn’t looking great. Already disadvantaged due to its undersized metro population, a move across the Cooper River to Johnson Hagood Stadium is cutting it close in terms of capacity. The stadium, home to The Citadel’s football team, used to seat 21,000, before 9,300 seats on the eastern grandstand were torn down in 2017 to deal with lead paint that had been used in their construction. Renovation plans include adding 3,000 seats back in, which could hit 15,000 if they bumped it to 3,300, but throw in a required sale by HCFC, LLC (led by content-creation platform founder Rob Salvatore) to chemical magnate Anita Zucker, and you’ll see there’s a lot of ifs and ands in this proposal.
Candidate: Charlotte Independence
Location (Metro population): Charlotte, N.C. (2,569, 213)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Jerry Richardson Stadium (Turf, 15,314)
Potential owner: James Goodnight (reported net worth $9.1 billion)
Notes: Charlotte ticks a lot of the boxes. A move from the Sportsplex at Matthews to UNC-Charlotte’s Jerry Richardson stadium meets capacity requirements, but puts them on to the dreaded turf. Regrettably, nearby American Legion Memorial Stadium only seats 10,500, despite a grass playing surface. With a sizeable metro population (sixth-largest in the USL Championship) and a possible owner in software billionaire James Goodnight, you’ve got some options here. The biggest problem likely lies in direct competition for market share against a much better-funded MLS Charlotte side due to join the league in 2021.
Candidate: Hartford Athletic
Location (Metro population): Hartford, Conn. (1,214,295)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Pratt & Whitney Stadium (Grass, 38,066)
Potential owner: Ray Dalio (reported net worth $18.4 billion)
Notes: Okay, I cheated a bit here, having to relocate Hartford to Pratt & Whitney Stadium, which is technically in East Hartford, Conn. I don’t know enough about the area to know if there’s some kind of massive beef between the two cities, but the club has history there, having played seven games in 2019 while Dillon Stadium underwent renovations. If the group of local businessmen that currently own the club manage to attract Dalio to the table, we’re on to something.
Candidate: Indy Eleven
Location (Metro population): Indianapolis, Ind. (2,048,703)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Lucas Oil Stadium (Turf, 62,421)
Potential owner: Jim Irsay (reported net worth of $3 billion)
Notes: Indy Eleven are a club that are SO CLOSE to being an ideal candidate – if it weren’t for Lucas Oil Stadium’s turf playing surface. Still, there’s a lot to like in this bid. I’m not going to lie, I have no idea what current owner and founder Ersal Ozdemir is worth, but it seems like there might be cause for concern. A sale to Irsay, who also owns the NFL Indianapolis (nee Baltimore) Colts, seems likely to keep the franchise there, rather than make a half-mile move to 14,230 capacity Victory Field where the AAA Indianapolis Indians play and expand from there.
Candidate: Louisville City FC
Location (Metro population): Louisville, Ky. (1,297,310)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Lynn Family Stadium (Grass, 14,000, possibly expandable to 20,000)
Potential owner: Wayne Hughes (reported net worth $2.8 billion)
Notes: I’m stretching things a bit here. Lynn Family stadium is currently listed as having 11,700 capacity that’s expandable to 14,000, but they’ve said that the ground could hold as many as 20,000 with additional construction, which might be enough to grant them a temporary waiver from USSF. If the stadium is a no-go, then there’s always Cardinal Stadium, home to the University of Louisville’s football team, which seats 65,000 but is turf. Either way, it seems like a sale to someone like Public Storage founder Wayne Hughes will be necessary to ensure the club has enough capital.
Candidate: Memphis 901 FC
Location (Metro population): Memphis, Tenn. (1,348,260)
Time zone: Central
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Liberty Bowl Stadium (Turf, 58,325)
Potential owner: Fred Smith (reported net worth $3 billion)
Notes: Unfortunately for Memphis, AutoZone Park’s 10,000 seats won’t cut it at the D1 level. With its urban location, it would likely prove tough to renovate, as well. Liberty Bowl Stadium more than meets the need, but will involve the use of the dreaded turf. As far as an owner goes, FedEx founder Fred Smith seems like a good local option.
Candidate: Miami FC, “The”
Location (Metro population): Miami, Fla. (6,158,824)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Riccardo Silva Stadium (FieldTurf, 20,000)
Potential owner: Riccardo Silva (reported net worth $1 billion)
Notes: Well, well, well, Silva might get his wish for top-flight soccer, after all. He’s got the money, he’s got the metro, and his ground has the capacity. There is the nagging issue of the turf, though. Hard Rock Stadium might present a solution, including a capacity of 64,767 and a grass playing surface. It is worth noting, however, that this is the first profile where I didn’t have to find a new potential owner for a club.
Candidate: North Carolina FC
Location (Metro population): Durham, N.C. (1,214,516 in The Triangle)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Carter-Finley Stadium (Grass/Turf, 57,583)
Potential owner: Steve Malik (precise net worth unknown) / Dennis Gillings (reported net worth of $1.7 billion)
Notes: We have our first “relocation” in North Carolina FC, who were forced to trade Cary’s 10,000-seat WakeMed Soccer Park for Carter-Finley Stadium in Durham, home of the NC State Wolfpack and 57,583 of their closest friends. The move is a whopping 3.1 miles, thanks to the close-knit hub that exists between Cary, Durham and Raleigh. Carter-Finley might be my favorite of the stadium moves in this exercise. The field is grass, but the sidelines are artificial turf. Weird, right? Either way, it was good enough for Juventus to play a friendly against Chivas de Guadalajara there in 2011. Maybe the move would be pushed for by new owner and medical magnate Dennis Gillings, whose British roots might inspire him to get involved in the Beautiful Game. Straight up, though, I couldn’t find a net worth for current owner Steve Malik, though he did sell his company MedFusion for $91 million in 2010, then bought it back for an undisclosed amount and sold it again for $43 million last November. I don’t know if Malik has the juice to meet D1 requirements, but I suspect he’s close.
Candidate: Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC
Location (Metro population): Pittsburgh, Penn. (2,362,453)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Heinz Field (Grass, 64,450)
Potential owner: Henry Hillman (reported net worth $2.5 billion)
Notes: I don’t know a ton about the Riverhounds, but this move in particular feels like depriving a pretty blue-collar club from its roots. Highmark Stadium is a no-go from a seating perspective, but the Steelers’ home stadium at Heinz Field would more than meet the requirements and have a grass surface that was large enough to be sanctioned for a FIFA friendly between the U.S. WNT and Costa Rica in 2015. As for an owner, Tuffy Shallenberger (first ballot owner name HOF) doesn’t seem to fit the USSF bill, but legendary Pittsburgh industrialist Henry Hillman might. I’m sure you’re asking, why not the Rooney Family, if they’ll play at Heinz Field? I’ll tell you: I honestly can’t seem to pin down a value for the family. The Steelers are valued at a little over a billion and rumors persist that Dan Rooney is worth $500 million, but I’m not sure. I guess the Rooneys would work too, but it’s a definite departure from an owner in Shallenberger who was described by one journalist as a guy who “wears boots, jeans, a sweater and a trucker hat.”
Candidate: Saint Louis FC
Location (Metro population): St. Louis, Mo. (2,807,338)
Time zone: Central
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Busch Stadium (Grass, 45,494)
Potential owner: William DeWitt Jr. (reported net worth $4 billion)
Notes: Saint Louis has some weirdness in making the jump to D1. Current CEO Jim Kavanaugh is an owner of the MLS side that will begin play in 2022. The club’s current ground at West Community Stadium isn’t big enough, but perhaps a timely sale to Cardinals owner William DeWitt Jr. could see the club playing games at Busch Stadium, which has a well established history of hosting other sports like hockey, college football and soccer (most recently a U.S. WNT friendly against New Zealand in 2019). The competition with another MLS franchise wouldn’t be ideal, like Charlotte, but with a big enough population and cross marketing from the Cardinals, maybe there’s a winner here. Wacko idea: If Busch doesn’t pan out, send them to The Dome. Sure, it’s a 60k turf closed-in stadium, but we can go for that retro NASL feel and pay homage to our nation’s soccer history.
Candidate: Tampa Bay Rowdies
Location (Metro population): Tampa, Fla. (3,068,511)
Time zone: Eastern
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Raymond James Stadium (Grass, 65,518)
Potential owner: Edward DeBartolo Jr. (reported net worth $3 billion)
Notes: This one makes me sad. Despite having never been there, I see Al Lang Stadium as an iconic part of the Rowdies experience. Current owner Bill Edwards proposed an expansion to 18,000 seats in 2016, but the move seems to have stalled out. Frustrated with the city’s lack of action, Edwards sells to one-time San Francisco 49ers owner Edward DeBartolo Jr., who uses his old NFL connections to secure a cushy lease at the home of the Buccaneers in Ray Jay, the site of a 3-1 thrashing of Antigua and Barbuda during the United States’ 2014 World Cup Qualifying campaign.
Breather. Hey, we finished the Eastern Conference teams. Why are you still reading this? Why am I still writing it? Time is a meaningless construct in 2020 my friends, we are adrift in the void, fueled only by brief flashes of what once was and what may yet still be.
Candidate: Austin Bold FC
Location (Metro population): Austin, Texas (2,168,316)
Time zone: Central
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Darrel K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium (FieldTurf, 95,594)
Potential owner: Michael Dell (reported net worth of $32.3 billion)
Notes: Anthony Precourt’s Austin FC has some unexpected competition and it comes in the form of tech magnate Michael Dell. Dell, were he to buy the club, would be one of the richest owners on our list and could flash his cash in the new first division. Would he have enough to convince Darrel K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium (I’m not kidding, that’s its actual name) to go back to a grass surface, like it did from ’96-’08? That’s between Dell and nearly 100,000 UT football fans, but everything can be had for the right price.
Candidate: Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC
Location (Metro population): Colorado Springs, Colo. (738,939)
Time zone: Mountain
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Falcon Stadium (FieldTurf, 46,692)
Potential owner: Charles Ergen (reported net worth $10.8 billion)
Notes: Welcome to Colorado Springs. We have hurdles. For the first time in 12 candidates, we’re back below the desired 1 million metro population mark. Colorado Springs actually plans to build a $35 million, 8,000 seat venue downtown that will be perfect for soccer, but in our timeline that’s 7,000 seats short. Enter Falcon Stadium, home of the Air Force Academy Falcons football team. Seems perfect except for the turf, right? Well, the tricky thing is that Falcon Stadium is technically on an active military base and is (I believe) government property. Challenges to getting in and out of the ground aside, the military tends to have a pretty grim view of government property being used by for-profit enterprises. Maybe Charles Ergen, founder and chairman of Dish Network, would be able to grease the right wheels, but you can go ahead and throw this into the “doubtful” category. It’s a shame, too. 6,035 feet of elevation is one hell of a home-field advantage.
Candidate: El Paso Locomotive FC
Location: El Paso, Texas
Time zone: Mountain
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Sun Bowl (FieldTurf, 51,500)
Potential owner: Paul Foster (reported net worth $1.7 billion)
Notes: God bless Texas. When compiling this list, I found so many of the theoretical stadium replacements were nearly serviceable by high school football fields. That’s insane, right? Anyway, Locomotive don’t have to settle for one of those, they’ve got the Sun Bowl, which had its capacity reduced in 2001 to a paltry 51,500 (from 52,000) specifically to accommodate soccer. Sure, it’s a turf surface, but what does new owner Paul Foster (who is only the 1,477th wealthiest man in the world, per Forbes) care, he’s got a team in a top league. Side note: Did you know that the Sun Bowl college football game is officially, through sponsorship, the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl? Why is it not the Frosted Flakes Sun Bowl? Why is the cereal mascot the promotional name of the football game? What are you doing, Kellogg’s?
Candidate: Las Vegas Lights FC
Location: Las Vegas, Nev. (2,227,053)
Time zone: Pacific
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Allegiant Stadium (Grass, 61,000)
Potential owner: Sheldon Adelson (reported net worth $37.7 billion)
Notes: Sin City. You had to know that the club that once signed Freddy Adu because “why not” was going to go all out in our flashy hypothetical proposal. Thanks to my narrative control of this whole thing, they have. Adelson is the second-richest owner in the league and has decided to do everything first class. That includes using the new Raiders stadium in nearby unincorporated Paradise, Nevada, and spending boatloads on high profile transfers. Zlatan is coming back to the U.S., confirmed.
Candidate: New Mexico United
Location: Albuquerque, N.M.
Time zone: Mountain
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Isotopes Park – officially Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park (Grass, 13,500 – 15,000 with expansion)
Potential owner: Maloof Family (reported net worth $1 billion)
Notes: New Mexico from its inception went deep on the community vibe, and I’ve tried to replicate that in this bid. The home field of Rio Grande Cr---I’m not typing out the whole thing—Isotopes Park falls just within the expansion rules we set to make it to 15,000 (weird, right?) and they’ve found a great local ownership group in the Lebanese-American Maloof (formerly Maalouf) family from Las Vegas. The only thing to worry about would be the metro population, but overall, this could be one of the gems of USL Prem.
Candidate: Oklahoma City Energy FC
Location: Oklahoma City, Okla. (1,396,445)
Time zone: Central
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark (Grass, 13,066)
Potential owner: Harold Hamm (reported net worth $14.2 billion)
Notes: There’s a bright golden haze on the meadow and it says it’s time to change stadiums and owners to make it to D1. A sale to oil magnate Harold Hamm would give the club the finances it needs, but Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark (home of the OKC Dodgers) actually falls outside of the boundary of what would meet capacity if 1,500 seats were added. Could the club pull off a move to Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Oklahoma – home of the Oklahoma Sooners? Maybe, but at 20 miles, this would be a reach.
Candidate: Orange County SC
Location: Irvine, Calif. (3,176, 000 in Orange County)
Time zone: Pacific
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Angels Stadium of Anaheim (Grass, 43,250)
Potential owner: Arte Moreno (reported net worth $3.3 billion)
Notes: You’ll never convince me that Rangers didn’t choose to partner with Orange County based primarily on its name. Either way, a sale to MLB Angels owner Arte Moreno produces a fruitful partnership, with the owner choosing to play his newest club out of the existing Angels stadium in OC. Another baseball conversion, sure, but with a metro population of over 3 million and the closest thing this hypothetical league has to an LA market, who’s complaining?
Candidate: Phoenix Rising FC
Location: Phoenix, Ariz. (4,857,962)
Time zone: Arizona
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): State Farm Stadium (Grass, 63,400)
Potential owner: Ernest Garcia II (reported net worth $5.7 billion)
Notes: We’re keeping it local with new owner and used car guru Ernest Garcia II. His dad owned a liquor store and he dropped out of college, which is making me feel amazing about my life choices right now. Casino Arizona Field is great, but State Farm Stadium is a grass surface that hosted the 2019 Gold Cup semifinal, so it’s a clear winner. Throw in Phoenix’s massive metro population and this one looks like a lock.
Candidate: Reno 1868 FC
Location: Reno, Nev. (425,417)
Time zone: Pacific
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Mackay Stadium (FieldTurf, 30,000)
Potential owner: Nancy Walton Laurie (reported net worth $7.1 billion)
Notes: The Biggest Little City on Earth has some serious barriers to overcome, thanks to its low metro population. A sale to Walmart heiress Nancy Walton Laurie and 1.6 mile-move to Mackay Stadium to split space with the University of Nevada, Reno makes this bid competitive, but the turf surface is another knock against it.
Candidate: Rio Grande Valley FC
Location: Edinburg, Texas (900,304)
Time zone: Central
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): McAllen Memorial Stadium (FieldTurf, 13,500 – 15,000 with expansion)
Potential owner: Alice Louise Walton (reported net worth $45 billion)
Notes: Yes, I have a second straight Walmart heiress on the list. She was the first thing that popped up when I googled “McAllen Texas richest people.” The family rivalry has spurred Walton to buy a club as well, moving them 10 miles to McAllen Memorial Stadium which, as I alluded to earlier, is a straight up high school football stadium with a full color scoreboard. Toss in an additional 1,500 seats and you’ve met the minimum, despite the turf playing surface.
Candidate: San Antonio FC
Location: San Antonio, Texas (2,550,960)
Time zone: Central
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Alamodome (FieldTurf, 64,000)
Potential owner: Red McCombs (reported net worth $1.6 billion)
Notes: I wanted to keep SAFC in the Spurs family, since the franchise is valued at $1.8 billion. That said, I didn’t let the Rooneys own the Riverhounds based on the Steelers’ value and it felt wrong to change the rules, so bring on Clear Channel co-founder Red McCombs. Toyota Field isn’t viable in the first division, but for the Alamodome, which was built in 1993 in hopes of attracting an NFL franchise (and never did), San Antonio can finally claim having *a* national football league team in its town (contingent on your definition of football). Now if only we could do something about that turf…
Candidate: San Diego Loyal SC
Location: San Diego, Calif. (3,317,749)
Time zone: Pacific
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): SDCCU Stadium (formerly Qualcomm) (Grass, 70,561)
Potential owner: Phil Mickelson (reported net worth $91 million)
Notes: Yes, golf’s Phil Mickelson. The existing ownership group didn’t seem to have the wherewithal to meet requirements, and Phil seemed to slot right in. As an athlete himself, he might be interesting in the new challenges of a top flight soccer team. Toss in a move to the former home of the chargers and you might have a basis for tremendous community support.
Candidate: FC Tulsa
Location: Tulsa, Okla. (991,561)
Time zone: Central
Stadium (playing surface, capacity): Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium (FieldTurf, 30,000)
Potential owner: George Kaiser ($10 billion)
Notes: I’m a fan of FC Tulsa’s rebrand, but if they want to make the first division, more changes are necessary. A sale to Tulsa native and one of the 100 richest men in the world George Kaiser means that funding is guaranteed. A move to Chapman Stadium would provide the necessary seats, despite the turf field. While the undersize population might be an issue at first glance, it’s hard to imagine U.S. Soccer not granting a waiver over a less than a 10k miss from the mark.
And that’s it! You made it. Those are all of the independent/hybrid affiliates in the USL Championship, which means that it’s time for our…
VERDICT: As an expert who has studied this issue for almost an entire day now, I am prepared to pronounce which USL Championships could be most ‘ready” for a jump to the USL Prem. A reminder that of the 27 clubs surveyed, 0 of them met our ideal criteria (proper ownership $, metro population, 15,000+ stadium with grass field).
Two of them, however, met almost all of those criteria: Indy Eleven and Miami FC. Those two clubs may use up two of our three available turf fields right from the outset, but the other factors they hit (particularly Silva’s ownership of Miami) makes them difficult, if not impossible to ignore for the top flight.
But who fill in the rest of the slots? Meet the entire 14-team USL Premier League:
Hartford Athletic
Indy Eleven
Louisville City FC
Miami FC
North Carolina FC
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC
Tampa Bay Rowdies
Saint Louis FC
San Antonio FC
New Mexico United
Phoenix Rising FC
Las Vegas Lights FC
Orange County SC
San Diego Loyal SC
Now, I shall provide my expert rationale for each club’s inclusion/exclusion, which can be roughly broken down into four categories.
Firm “yes”
Hartford Athletic: It’s a good market size with a solid stadium. With a decent investor and good community support, you’ve got potential here.
Indy Eleven: The turf at Lucas Oil Stadium is no reason to turn down a 62,421 venue and a metro population of over 2 million.
Louisville City FC: Why doesn’t the 2017 & 2018 USL Cup champion deserve a crack at the top flight? They have the market size, and with a bit of expansion have the stadium at their own SSS. LCFC, you’re in.
Miami FC, “The”: Our other blue-chip recruit on the basis of ownership value, market size and stadium capacity. Yes, that field is turf, but how could you snub Silva’s chance to claim victory as the first division 1 club soccer team to play in Miami?
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC: Pittsburgh sacrificed a lot to be here (according to my arbitrary calculations). Their market size and the potential boon of soccer at Heinz Field is an important inclusion to the league.
Saint Louis FC: Willie hears your “Busch League” jokes, Willie don’t care. A huge market size, combined with the absence of an NFL franchise creates opportunity. Competition with the MLS side, sure, but St. Louis has serious soccer history and we’re willing to bet it can support two clubs.
Tampa Bay Rowdies: With a huge population and a massive stadium waiting nearby, Tampa Bay seems like too good of an opportunity to pass up for the USL Prem.
Las Vegas Lights FC: Ostentatious, massive and well-financed, Las Vegas Lights FC is everything that the USL Premier League would need to assert that it didn’t intend to play second fiddle to MLS. Players will need to be kept on a short leash, but this is a hard market to pass up on.
Phoenix Rising FC: Huge population, big grass field available nearby and a solid history of success in recent years. No brainer.
San Diego Loyal SC: New club? Yes, massive population in a market that recently lost an absolutely huge sports presence? Also yes. This could be the USL Prem’s Seattle.
Cautious “yes”
New Mexico United: You have to take a chance on New Mexico United. The club set the league on fire with its social media presence and its weight in the community when it entered the league last season. The market may be slightly under USSF’s desired 1 million, but fervent support (and the ability to continue to use Isotopes Park) shouldn’t be discounted.
North Carolina FC: Carter-Finley’s mixed grass/turf surface is a barrier, to be sure, but the 57,000+ seats it offers (and being enough to offset other fully-turf offerings) is enough to put it in the black.
Orange County SC: It’s a top-tier club playing in a MLB stadium. I know it seems unlikely that USSF would approve something like that, but believe me when I say “it could happen.” Orange County is a massive market and California likely needs two clubs in the top flight.
San Antonio FC: Our third and only voluntary inclusion to the turf fields in the first division, we’re counting on San Antonio’s size and massive potential stadium to see it through.
Cautious “no”
Birmingham Legion FC: The town has solid soccer history and a huge potential venue, but the turf playing surface puts it on the outside looking in.
Memphis 901 FC: Like Birmingham, not much to dislike here outside of the turf playing surface at the larger playing venue.
Austin Bold FC: See the other two above.
FC Tulsa: Everything’s just a little bit off with this one. Market’s slightly too small, stadium has turf. Just not enough to put it over the top.
Firm “no”
Charleston Battery: Small metro and a small potential new stadium? It’s tough to say yes to the risk.
Charlotte Independence: A small new stadium and the possibility of having to compete with an organization that just paid over $300 million to join MLS means it’s best for this club to remain in the USL Championship.
Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC: When a club’s best chance to meet a capacity requirement is to host games at a venue controlled by the military, that doesn’t speak well to a club’s chances.
El Paso Locomotive FC: An undersized market and a turf field that meets capacity requirements is the death knell for this one.
Oklahoma City Energy FC: Having to expand a baseball field to meet requirements is a bad start. Having to potentially play 20 miles away from your main market is even worse.
Reno 1868 FC: Population nearly a half-million short of the federation’s requirements AND a turf field at the hypothetical new stadium makes impossible to say yes to this bid.
Rio Grande Valley FC: All the seat expansions in the world can’t hide the fact that McAllen Memorial Stadium is a high school stadium through and through.
Here’s who’s left in the 11-team Championship:
Birmingham Legion FC
Charleston Battery
Charlotte Independence
Memphis 901 FC
Austin Bold FC
Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC
El Paso Locomotive FC
Oklahoma City Energy FC
Reno 1868 FC
Rio Grande Valley FC
FC Tulsa
With MLS folding the six affiliates it has in USL League One, the league is a little bit thin (especially considering USSF’s requirements for 8 teams for lower level leagues), but seems definitely able to expand up to the necessary numbers with Edwards’ allusions to five new additions this year:
Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
Forward Madison FC
Greenville Triumph SC
Union Omaha
Richmond Kickers
South Georgia Tormenta
FC Tucson
Format of Assorted Leagues – This (like everything in this post) is pure conjecture on my part, but here are my thoughts on how these leagues might function in a first year while waiting for additional expansion.
USL Premier – We’ll steal from the 12-team Scottish Premiership. Each club plays the other 11 clubs 3 times, with either one or two home matches against each side. When each club has played 33 matches, the top six and bottom six separate, with every club playing an additional five matches (against each other team in its group). The top club wins the league. The bottom club is automatically relegated. The second-bottom club will enter a two-legged playoff against someone (see below) from the championship playoffs.
USL Championship -- 11 clubs is a challenge to schedule for. How about every club plays everyone else three times (either one or two home matches against each side)? Top four clubs make the playoffs, which are decided by two-legged playoffs. The winner automatically goes up. I need feedback on the second part – is it better to have the runner-up from the playoffs face the second-bottom club from the Premiership, or should the winner of the third-place match-up get the chance to face them to keep drama going in both playoff series? As for relegation, we can clearly only send down the last place club while the third division is so small.
USL League One – While the league is so small, it doesn’t seem reasonable to have the clubs play as many matches as the higher divisions. Each club could play the other six clubs four times – twice at home and twice away – for a very equitable 24-match regular season, which would help restrict costs and still provide a chance to determine a clear winner. Whoever finishes top of the table goes up.
And there you have it, a hypothetical look at how the USL could build a D1 league right now. All it would take is a new stadium for almost the entire league and new owners for all but one of the 27 clubs, who wouldn’t feel that their property would be massively devalued if they got relegated.
Well that’s our show. I’m curious to see what you think of all of this, especially anything that you think I may have overlooked (I’m sure there’s plenty). Anyway, I hope you’re all staying safe and well.

>>"In a civilized society freedom to offend should be protected.” – Nigel Warburton<<

“I’m not changing anything,” I said to Keith, standing tall with my palms pressing hard on his desk.
who wast offended by a swear word? When thinking about the word censorship itself, another more daunting word would come to mind – suppression. If you visualized it from here, you’d think of a citizen from a communist country like China where media censorship was in full force. Theoretically, freedom of speech never existed.
Next, I grabbed my bag from my desk and walked toward the elevator to go on lunch break. Adam, my co-worker, held the door open for me.
“Are you going to your interview with that foul-mouthed hockey player?” I asked him.
“Yeah, it’s going to be fun. He’s hilarious.”
“How do you transcribe the interview again?”
“Oh, it’ll be edited. You know how hockey players talk: Gotta give it all, y’know? Get the puck in!
“I love your Canadian accent, Adam,” I laughed.
He blushed and stared at the ground. Five people from the censorship department entered next and made Adam and me step away from each other to make space. Two were tall, slender women wearing high pumps. The other three were men smelling strong of Armani cologne. Somehow our chat turned into polite smiles until we reached the lobby.
“I was going to say that nobody ever comes out of Keith’s office with a happy face…” Adam said, “except for you, usually.”
I looked at the censors strutting past the receptionist without thanking him for automatically opening the gate for them.
“That’s because it wasn’t about our magazine.”
“You showed him your book?” he said.
The censors lit their cigarettes outside while choosing their lunch destination. Eventually, they headed north.
“Care to join me for lunch, Adam?”
We grabbed some sandwiches near the Riverwalk, one of my favorite places to hang out in Chicago. I moved here out of intuition that I would be able to contribute to media freedom. New York and Los Angeles were too vast to grasp or wrap my head around. There was something about Chicago that gave me hope. It could be the cold wind, or it could be John Hughes movies.
“Press freedom in the States is a joke, Adam. I don’t understand how people stay silent about it.”
We were crossing the busy DuSable Bridge with our sandwiches and drinks because I preferred to walk.
“I don’t think people are silent. Plus, we can only tell so much,” Adam said and took a sip of his milkshake. I knew that he referred us to the press.
He continued, “Over 40 percent of Americans want a socialist society over capitalism, but nobody knows because the media doesn’t share this information.”
“So why don’t we?”
Adam almost choked on his next sip and started a round of coughing.
“There’s a reason why I’m a sports journalist, Andrea.”
“But even people in sports can’t tell what they think! What’s with this Canadian hockey commentator that got fired? What did he do? He criticized immigrants for not wearing poppies on Remembrance Day. That’s crazy!”
“Firing a legend is indeed crazy…”
I knew that Adam knew a lot about the suppression of speech, but he wouldn’t team up with me. Nobody would.
“The problem is this whole PC bullshit!” I said. “If you’re a public figure, you’re not free to state your opinion, because a certain group of people out there will take offence.”
I thought of social media, which, in my eyes, was the public. The public had been involved in the media and politics for over a decade. You had all sorts of voices and perspectives based on everything – bias, lie, truth and ignorance. The majority was brainwashed by carefully selected ads. People’s behaviors were tracked and recorded. If you were without an opinion, the government would feed you one.
“Everything is PC these days, especially if you’re in the public eye. You know that. Isn’t that what your book is about?” he said.
“Yes.”
“You’re making a wrong move.”
“What do you mean?”
“Trust me, Andrea. If you want it published, you’ll need to do it yourself under a pseudonym. I’m just trying to save your ass.”
“But…”
“Yes, you’ve already shown it to Keith, I know. Either way…I’d like to keep you as a co-worker.”
Adam looked at his watch and then finished his sandwich in two bites.
“Shit, I have to head up to the arena.”
“Well, thanks for hanging out.”
I was awake till late that night – reading about journalists in danger, detained and exiled whistleblowers, the torturous imprisonment of the Wikileaks founder, an Iranian satirical writer jailed for twenty-seven years…
What Adam was trying to say was that the government and the police owned the media. I knew that. I was also aware that there were evil forces out there manipulating the relationship between the west and the east. The only way to trigger a potential threat for war was to create conflict between powerful, wealthy countries.
Meanwhile, the news on existing wars in underdeveloped, third world countries fell through the cracks, but they would eventually creep up again if there were a flood of asylum seekers. Religions, cultural differences and mentalities were frowned upon more deeply these days. And as a result, racism was on the rise. Immigrants were criticized for not adapting to the culture of their new home. The problems of the world went on and on.
It was evident that someone was on the Canadian prime minister’s case, watching his every move and listening to every whisper. When you saw footage or pictures of those in the news You would never hear about who whowho was behind it when you saw footage or pictures of those in the news. Who sent those to the press? The public would be too fixated on the content itself than comment on the reporter’s motive.
Blackface, two-faced…Was nothing else more relevant to report?
I actually never asked Adam about his opinion on his prime minister, or any political matters in his home country. Canada is multicultural. With this melting pot, a nation’s perception changes. Non-western mentalities join the club, and they have probably never laughed hard at a piece of comedy.
I opened my manuscript to some random page, which happened to be the section on transgender identity and how a public figure (whether politician or TV host, celebrity) could lose his or her job or reputation if he or she made an inappropriate comment. The employer didn’t know any better way to secure the company’s reputation than to fire that employee (i.e. misinterpreted actors accused of racism). In my book, I took real-life examples, whether the accused people were actors, politicians or other public figures. They usually ended up finding justification and consent on popular internet podcasts or other. As long as you weren’t on national television, you were kind of safe. But as soon as you disappeared from the screen, people would forget about you.
Just before I fell asleep, my phone vibrated. Adam messaged me, saying, “I have to take you to the Comedy Bar tomorrow.”
I didn’t sleep well. The nightmares I had on publishing my book were a clear sign that I was, in fact, scared. Images of me lying dead in the gutter or being raped in prison gave me the shivers. Moreover, this fear came from feeling alone. I looked at my manuscript with a sudden desire to burn it. Adam was right. There was only so much you could tell. I didn’t vote for our president, but I could tell how his lack of depth and decency in speeches reached out to the people. They listened to him because there was no such person like him in politics. Only the late-night shows were able to tell the rest of the world that there were sane people in the United States. But that was no longer politics or media. It was pure entertainment. Unfiltered politics—presented by entertainers.
I thought Adam had overcome his fear of asking me out, but as soon as he stressed the importance of the comedy show, it no longer felt like it was a date.
We met on W Illinois St for some pizza before we headed to the show. The casual nightlife in Chicago was very easygoing, especially where we were. Many students from the University of Chicago would hang out here.
I’d never been to the Comedy Bar, and I didn’t realize that there were two stages. The guy that we were going to see got upgraded from the brewery stage to the main stage because the main act cancelled at the last minute. However, a lot of the people decided to stay instead of requesting their money back. The room was filling up quickly, as people from the lower floor all came upstairs to the main venue looking for seats. This part of the venue would probably fit over one hundred people. Adam and I grabbed a table not too far from the stage and ordered a couple of IPAs.
“Did you look this guy up?” Adam asked.
“No. I don’t even know his name. I came with zero expectations,” I said, keeping to myself that I’d anticipated it to be a date and perhaps seek a confidant in him. But at that time, I didn’t even realize what he was doing for me.
The lights dimmed, as the stage brightened up – hands were clapping.
A skinny guy of perhaps 5’10 appeared on stage with an innocent smile. He was probably 23, if not younger.
“Hi, my name is Ted,” he spoke into the mic. “I recently graduated from the University of Chicago, where I studied journalism, arts and media. Imagine what my parents would have said if I’d wanted to study nothing but the arts?”
There were a couple of chuckles in the room.
“Yep, they would’ve killed me. There’s only one Andy Warhol in a million. Becoming successful in the arts is almost like a gambling game unless you master the rules and shortcuts of marketing. Then you can write songs that go I really really really really really really like you. And I want you, do you want me?
My condolences if your eleven-year-old daughter fell for this song…”
Everybody laughed.
“There are software systems out there that study and trace people’s behaviors. These systems are capable of measuring your attention span. And needless to say—technology has slowed down our thinking! ADHD no longer just affect kids, but at least 11% of adults. Make me read a book by Charles Dickens, and I’d rather shoot myself in the head!”
Again, there was laughter. I saw a huge grin on Adam’s face. Something told me he’d already heard that joke.
“Going back to my studies…,” Ted began, “I’m sure you’ve noticed that I’m not a comedian, despite being the class clown. But I came to realize that only comedy can save the human mind.
In journalism, you learn about the necessity of social media. And here’s where things go wrong…”
My heart was up to my throat, and there were goosebumps all over my forearms. Ted looked over to us for a second before he continued.
“Free press comes with many perspectives and therefore involves a huge amount of bias. Your audience—the public has suddenly become the judge. Twenty years ago, you had professional critics taking you down, and now the entire world has the ability to shit on you.”
I saw some serious faces in the audience, but quite a few people didn’t look sure about this.
“This isn’t TED talk, dude!” someone shouted from the back.
“I’ll make you laugh, pal. I promise!” Ted shouted back, smiling.
“On a more important note, after tonight, you’ll wonder if there’ll still be comedians ten years from now.”
He paused for a while, and there was silence.
“The world is going through drastic changes, and on a cultural and sexual level, it seems like we all have to be nice and politically correct. However, this doesn’t necessarily apply to comedy. Freedom of speech prevails in comedy. But what’s the point of comedy? You see, for a comedian, the goal is to get a reaction out of his audience. To do that, he or she needs to push boundaries and here’s the problem:
How far do you push the boundaries? How offensive can you be?
Your safest bet is to create a TV animation. There is no human face that you can judge. In the end, you can choose to walk away from it, unaffected by the content, whether it’s jokes on racism, homophobia or misogyny. If you laugh during these shows, it means you understand the joke, and you’re aware that it is a joke. This is the purpose of comedy.
I was saying earlier that comedy might not exist anymore in ten years, but before that happens, you’d probably have to sign your consent that you made a choice to subject to the content of the comedy show.”
I noticed that I’d finished my beer already, whereas Adam’s was still half full.
“In journalism, you have codes of ethics, pillars, and all that shit to follow, but journalists have their own agendas. Except that now, the secret police watch each journalist closely. As scary as it may sound, political censorship doesn’t only take place in Asia and the Middle East. It’s here in North America too.”
He took another sip of his water and smiled at the audience. “I’m sure you agree that growing censorship is a huge danger to what you think is a free society… Either way, let me begin my show…”
Here, people started raising their eyebrows, and Adam chuckled.
For the next half hour, Ted delivered a wildly entertaining stand-up show filled with offensive and yet hilarious jokes. His entire personality changed, and he suddenly seemed taller and more mature. He’d fooled the audience successfully.
After the show, I knew that Adam would introduce me to Ted. He joined our table and shook my hand firmly.
“Pleasure to meet you, Andrea. I’ve heard a lot about you,” he said.
I raised an eyebrow at Adam and smiled back at Ted.
“Hi.”
“Ted works at the university in the publishing sector. After reading his essays, I felt that the two of you had to meet,” Adam said.
We spoke about my book and how it was not appropriate for the press, according to our chief editor. Even Ted looked worried, knowing that our chief knew about my book.
In Ted’s eyes, we couldn’t stop the media from brainwashing the public. Though we could still save humor. Provoking a reaction out of people is the only thing that was still relevant.
When we parted outside the Comedy Bar, Ted gave me a copy of Free Speech – A short history by Nigel Warburton. We’d arranged to meet at the university during the week. He wanted a copy of my manuscript. He was convinced that my book wouldn’t just stir up the media but also put me in danger. Therefore, we had to work on a strategic plan for the publishing part.
Adam drove me home. I lived in a high rise in the Loop district. On that particular night, I didn’t want to be alone, so I asked him to come up with me.
“I promise I won’t make any moves on you,” I said jokingly and realized that I was tipsy and emotional.
He smiled, and I could tell that he was about to say no.
“For all I know, I could be dead tomorrow, Adam. On some days I’m scared for my life because I feel watched. We expose ourselves so much without even realizing it.”
He stopped me right there. “I’ll come up for some tea if you have some.”
I was nervous in the elevator. The white neon lights were hurting my eyes, and my bubbly head was throbbing. I felt his eyes on me as I was walking out of the elevator first.
My heart sank when I saw that my apartment door was open. Adam gestured for me to stay back. He carefully pushed the door open, and we saw a turned dinner table and chairs.
“Hello?” he said.
He switched the light on, and we walked into my apartment. All my books and magazines were lying around on the floor.
“Oh, shit,” I said.
I ran into my bedroom, not caring if anyone was there or not. There, I found torn pages of my manuscript, and at least one-third of it was missing.
“Andrea…” I heard Adam say.
I knew immediately that both Ted and I were in danger and that whatever measure we were going to take, it had to happen now.

making sense of 7A without Rederina * If questioning Rederina feels like an attack please skip **** SPOILERS ****
7.01 to 7.10 have been confusing episodes. The best example of why your grammar teacher warned you about the use of pronouns when clarity was at stake. TBL is akin to going up a mountain road with hairpin turns, no longer are we facing one direction, coasting along, when a twist occurs and none of what seemed certain before makes sense. We reach another curve and we are back into a familiar plot. Is this repetition, for example Liz now working with Fakerina instead of Jennifer to find out who Red is, a product of the writers's lack of creativity, as some fantractors advocate? Or is this reiteration of similar, not identical, elements the point?
Disclaimer: though I refer to this woman as Fakerina, I am pretty certain now that she, the woman we met in 6.22, is the original Katarina Rostova. She is not, however, the woman we met as Liz’s mother, played as a young character by Lotte Verbeek, whose name is ALSO Katarina, and she had married Constantin Rostov, becoming Katarina Rostova, although she might be a Katarina Rostova as well by birth, as is with names that run in families.
There is some evidence that Liz’s mother may have been a doppelgänger, in name and appearance, part of a charade, to do a false flag operation of counterintelligence with the participation of Red, Ilya and some other unknown characters.
In the memory extraction both specialist and both patients/victims use very similar words. At the end of the half season, Ressler eliminates the possibility of ever retrieving Liz's original memories if she does not remember them, and the possibility of knowing who brought Liz to him the second time. Was it Kate? Was it Red and that is the reason he says Krilov betrayed him, or was it because Krilov had done something Red did not to ask him to do, back in 1991, like manipulate her memories instead of erasing them.
Unless Ilya is mouthing words, or speaking out loud, Skovic and Fakerina cannot see what he sees, only what he says or mouths. We have 3 levels of narrative going on:
  1. The past, as remembered by Ilya in which we see young Katarina and young Ilya, interacting. Or young Ilya and young Dom.
  2. Present day Ilya, inserted in the scene, sometimes mouthing words he said, or that someone else said, sometime interacting with Skovic or Fakerina.
  3. Skovic, Fakerina and present day Ilya as they extract information from him.
Fakerina is referred to by Skovic as Ilya's “friend”, while Ilya talking about the past uses “she” and “her” to refer to Katarina
lya: I see her. With me. I’m relieved. I thought she was gone. I heard about Cape May. The drowning. Her suicide.
Skovic: But there was no suicide.
Ilya: No. No.
Skovic: Do you remember what happened that night?
Ilya: She made contact at the embassy…. She was in trouble. She needed help.
Skovic: What trouble? Tell me about the trouble. You helped her, right?
Ilya: She was being hunted. By the KGB. The Cabal. The Americans. Her father helped get us out of Russia. But it wasn’t enough. She needed to disappear. Needed a plan.
Now, Fakerina does not know anything about the plan. She is not Katarina, who was there with the plan. What Ilya says next is what makes Fakerina believe Red is an impersonator, something that had not occurred to her before as she was treating Red as Raymond Reddington.
Ilya and Young Ilya: A fugitive and traitor to his country….. I don’t think you’re entirely grasping what I’m suggesting…. Becoming Reddington. Purposefully stepping into the shoes of a man and destined to be condemned as a traitor.
..
Ilya: We devised a plan to steal the money used to frame Reddington and disappear.
Fakerina: But the plan, it didn’t work.
Ilya: Not like we thought.
This is important. Ilya is not saying the plan did not work, he is saying it did not work as they planned, with someone impersonating Reddington. Here is where Fakerina acts like Liz. Assuming things instead of keeping on the why the plan did not work as planned. They got the money, so that was not it. The question is who walked in the banks. We have three options:
Katarina OR Reddington (because he was not dead) OR some other stranger who already looked like Reddington enough that Koehler could possibly make him into a reasonable facsimile of RR.
Ilya: It was myself, Katarina, Dr. Koehler.
Fakerina: And the person under the knife, the man who walked into the banks and impersonated Reddington tell me what you remember about him.
What Katarina thought Ilya was suggesting in Rassvet was Ilya impersonating Reddington:
Katarina: Why would you do that? [Ilya is who would do the impersonating] Ilya: To protect you. [Katarina is the one being protected] Katarina: They’ll hunt you. You’ll never be able to stop running. [Ilya would be the one running because he would look like Reddington]
That is what did not work as planned, because Ilya still looks like Ilya. We are shown a female figure, but the work is on the face, which is Koehler specialty, which we have seen 2 examples of his work: Basil Vladakis and Bastian Moreau. He is not a gender reassignment expert, he hides people by altering facial features enough to fool casual observers and facial recognition software. He does not even create a perfect copy of the Turkish courier, just good enough to pass a guard at the UN and not make suspicious at a glance.
So, wither they found a guy who look like Red, a grifter, a relative, etc, or Reddington was not dead. It was not Ilya who went in the banks, and stole the money, it was Reddington.
Fakarina thinks the secret Ilya is guarding is about who impersonated Reddington, because she now thinks Reddington was dead based on what Ilya said. But the reason he is guarding the memory might be because of the way Fakerina framed the question, about “the person under the knife.THAT is what he does not want to reveal. Just like Red actually does not confirm to Liz whose file it was:
Red: One file has been deleted. Liz: Yours. Red: I prefer to keep my nips and tucks to myself. Forgive an old man his vanity.
Red did not confirm it. He made a general assertion about his preferences in keeping nips and tucks to himself, and then the conversation shifts to the before and after, which Red says it was not pretty. The man who walked in the banks, had bandages in his back,

and comments on his changed appearance, which could be from repairing face burns: “Not a pretty sight.”. Notice Red's neck scars
https://preview.redd.it/of7td8u6ht441.png?width=1301&format=png&auto=webp&s=8f300af121f3f4f7a826a8a7c87e0dc4b5c7cd64
Abraham Maltz who did wok on Red as directly confirmed by Red:“What other secrets have you just given away? … Who knows about the work I’ve had done?" comment son the elasticity, something burned skin loses: "Ray, look at you. You look great. I mean, the elasticity is amazing. You been juicing?".
Carla AKA Naomi comments on his looking different: "Not as different as you". After severe burns, reconstructive surgery, and 25 years, I bet Red did not look the same.
So what Ilya might be guarding is what we were shown. The woman doing facial surgery was Katarina, who changed her appearance, from the known appearance of the Rostova identity, including the flaming red hair, to whatever she looks like nowadays.
https://preview.redd.it/lv5jmhvkht441.png?width=416&format=png&auto=webp&s=4994f4f65d5a7b9773f27d8490cde20f6582a7e5
The rest goes to the plan in Belgrade. Set Fakerina to die as Katarina.
Red: She knows you tried to kill her, Dom. She wants answers, but shealso wants revenge. You set her up, betrayed her
Red’s “her” and “she” are about Fakerina, the woman who is coming for them. Then Frankie introduces Dom’s daughter, Katarina by finding the sheet of music, so Dom here is taking about his daughter:
Dom: She [Katarina] broke my heart. ... Did I make mistakes? Yes. Do I deserve to die for them? Eh, maybe. If I die, at least I will go to my grave knowing that I did what I did to protect my own.
Skovic: We’re going to go back. Back to the night you and Katarina’s father [ This is Dom, Katarina’s father] decided her [Fakerina] fate. This is when things get interesting, we learn that Ilya and Reddington (who must be OUR Reddington and quite alive, so it is him who walked in the banks) planned something that did not work and angered “them” more.
Young Dom: Listen to me. Your ruse with Reddington didn’t work. All it managed to do was anger the people who want her dead.
we know of three things that happened after the faked suicide, but only one does Reddington acknowledge and has an explanation:
  1. The sighting at the ferry, 2 weeks after Cape May.
  2. A sighting in Prague that left Velov with a photo of Liz, and which Red says it could have been planted. so his plan to have a decoy is now working against him by making Liz believe that Katarina was gallivanting as herself in Prague.
  3. The stunt to get them money to hide. Was that KGB money, or cabal money?
We have a very clear signal that Katarina was alive:
Young Ilya: She is dead. Young Dom: Nonsense!
So, this Dom is calling nonsense that his daughter is dead. And Dom is not calling her Reddington. We find that Ilya knows Townsend, and says he cannot call off Townsend, which sounds a lot like Fitch with Berlin: "I sent a lot of guys.. I got the others to hold off, but Milos Kirchhoff, Berlin, whatever the hell name he’s using. He chewed through the leash. I couldn’t stop him."
It would seem that Dom’s plan was to lead everyone away from the real plan to keep Katarina safe. A plan in which he drafted Fakerina to create a trail: "Dom promised me no one would get hurt. Said he loved his child and just wanted her to be safe." So that seems to me to be the sighting at the ferry, possibly the sighting at Prague, if Red is not who "did" it.
Fakerina had retired by now. She had made a life for herself. She had married again. But she looks like herself still. Red did not know anything about Belgrade beforehand, which is made clear by him, by Dom and by Ilya:
Young Ilya: I should tell him. Young Dom: We’re not telling him anything. Young Ilya: Oh. I know how you feel, but Reddington deserves to know what we’ve done. Young Dom: Why? Why does Reddington deserve to know anything? Young Ilya: Because he’s a part of this.
as Red told Fakerina
Red: I didn’t know. Fakerina: …. You want me to believe you had nothing to do with Belgrade. Red: I didn’t.
And so, the plan was that Dom would leak that his daughter was to be at a certain place, and there was a car bomb, she would blow up to smithereens and Katarina Rostova would be dead, neutralizing the threat to Dom’s daughter.
He leaked that his daughter [Katarina], that you [Fakerina], were staying at the inn and that you carried sensitive intel. This might be the last chance to catch the infamous Russian traitor Katarina Rostova.
They were lookalikes, and they had the same name. It is Fakerina who is at the inn, going to deliver a package to Dom. The enemies had been told Katarina, the traitor would be there. But Fakerina looks like she always did, but her name and her face are now making her a target:
Do I seem safe to you? Hunted, chased into the shadows. I had everything taken from me that night. I can’t show my face, use my name…. I’ve been hunted like an animal! I’m still being hunted. And it’s not gonna end unless I end it
Except, it is not her who made the name “Katarina Rostova” into a traitor’s name, it is Liz’s mother, Katarina. They looked alike, so her face is the face of a traitor, while Katarina had Koehler make her into someone else. Red, Ilya and Dom are protecting Katarina. Dom and Ilya threw Fakerina to the wolves.
Ilya was fakerina's best friend and she seems distressed that he would chose to kill himself rather than help her. Which means whatever the relationship is between him and Red and/or between him and Dom, Fakerina ignores it.
Ilya notes the “new husband”, which means either he or Reddington were married to her, even as a cover:
I hadn’t known you’d taken a new husband. Not that I was angry to find out, certainly not as angry as he seemed to be, charging out of that room.
How could I have not known about her husband? … I’ve never even heard of him.
The plan failed when the husband is killed, and there are witness who see a live Katarina. Now this is the second time a plan to keep her safe, designed by men who love Katarina failed. The first one is the ruse Dom refers to: Your ruse with Reddington didn’t work. All it managed to do was anger the people who want her dead.
I think Katarina was being foiled at each turned by her cadre of male relatives and friends "helping" her.
This woman, Fakerina, is a very angry woman. But why would they not help her disappear? Get her a new face? Red does it all the time. That is a good question. Maybe, because she went into hiding. She moved from place to place, she kept finding trouble, "We heard Katarina fighting with a man in the hallway. Mom and Dad ran out of the apartment to help, but the man he had a gun, shot my parents. Gave her a chance to get away."
Ilya seemed to have had a close relationship with Fakerina, seems to know Dom well, is a childhood friend of Red, and if that part of Rassvet is true, also of Katarina.
Red seems to have had a relationship of sorts to Fakerina, as seen by the kiss, and her distress at hurting him. He is a childhood friend of Ilya and seems to have a long if difficult relationship with Dom. He seems to have loved Katarina as seen in his suicide speech in Cape May.
Dom is Katarina’s father, and seems to have used Fakerina as a decoy with no regrets, to save “his own”. His relationship to Reddington is not an easy one: "We’re not telling him anything.... Why? Why does Reddington deserve to know anything? " Red describes it as such: "I've known Dom a long time. Most of it's been unpleasant."
And what we KNOW of the stories Red tell of his youth seems to be pretty much in the US, specifically in the Midwest, Michigan:
  • Elizabeth. ... Soda pop?
  • One day, I’m out rototilling Pat Hunt’s garden. I go in for a bottle of pop– must have been 110– and there’s BJ in the sunken living room, shoes off, feet up on the couch, eating a fried-bologna sandwich.
  • I was in Steven Bash’s rec room down in the basement, eating fried egg and bologna sandwich when he did it.
  • I still remember going to the Snowflake Dance and watching him for the first time. That kid, man, he could move. Won the eighth-grade talent show. He was on the Yell Squad....
  • Because Yuri talks faster than a cheerleader after a nooner under the grandstands.
  • You look like Bob Yoshimura in 8th-grade swing choir. It’s upside down!
  • The first time I ever smoked a cigar was with Marnie Petersen in fifth grade. Funny, little, bat-faced girl. I adored her.
  • I remember the name of the baker I stole the strawberry bismark from when I was 11 years old....
  • I’ll never forget a puppet show I saw when I was 5, maybe 6. Hansel and Gretel. Scared me to death.
  • I haven’t had a babysitter since Brenda Gilroy. My God, pot pies, Lawrence Welk, bath time with Brenda.
  • God, I miss Bob Ross. That television painter with the little squirrel on his shoulder and the happy little trees.
  • I so wanted to be a scout– tying knots, the Pinewood Derby, and the campfire songs.
  • You really should try Ginny’s Cheeseburger Chowder. The ground chuck and spices, the melted cheese.
  • If you so much as look at Vontae’s pimento loaf again, you’re gonna end up with your teeth sticking out the back of your head and sipping your dinner through a bendy straw.
  • another spin of the bottle in Melanie Reichman's basement
  • I spent two summers operating the Whack-the-Cats at the Emmet County Fair.
  • You know, when I was 15, I had a summer job installing carpets for Albert Kodagolian on Lake Charlevoix.
Soda pops (calling sodas “pops” is a Midwestern thing), fried bologna, bendy straws, pot pies, Hansel & Gretel, etc. That is a childhood in the American Midwest, with a moralistic father who used Brylcreem, loved Cadillacs and a mother of Russian origins, who has died by 2015: I’ve stood over the open grave of someone I’ve loved too often. Once for my mother. [3.09]
He has mentioned an uncle Vic who wrapped his car around trees on Saturday nights, a grandfather who rode the rails, a grandmother who stored flour in the refrigerator, and possibly an uncle Scott, an aunt Lucille and a Buddy. He has also mentioned a “Dad” whose car smelled of peanut shells and gasoline, but that does not seem to be his father, whom he calls “father”.
And yet, Red is a childhood friend of Ilya Koslov, a man he loves like a brother: " I love you because I can trust you" & "The man she’s taken, he’s like a brother to me."
Ilya: Have I ever let you down? Red: Once. When we were children. Ilya: You wouldn’t give back the truck.
Red refers to him as Ilya, so we now his first name is Ilya, what we do not know is if Koslov is his real last name. Like Dominc is Dom's real first name, and likely Raymond is Red's first name, what people who know him call him in private.
we KNOW that Katarina grew up in the US because Dom did not carry glitter from the USSR, and all her toys are stored in Dom’s barn, American toys. Including a drawing of a wood house with a blue door. This not being reality, the fact that we have a drawing of a house which looks like Dom's likely means Dom already had the house when Katarina was growing up, which likely means Katarina grew up in the East Coast. (house is near Wilmington, NY on the Vermont border in the Adirondacks).
https://preview.redd.it/d4dbc1swit441.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=46b85289899a544e084a495fa9d9d8ea7ce7793b
Katarina seduced Constantin in the US: “when we first met, there was this house near where she lived, a case study house built by this famous mid-century architect.” There are mid century houses in the West Coast and some in the East coast and in the Midwest.
Katarina is likely to be the woman he and Sam are talking about: “Oh, my God. I’ve never been more scared of a woman in my life. She was thrilling in bed. What a pair of legs. I think she played field hockey in college.”, and likely that college is Ann Arbor: “Anyone asks, you’re my girlfriend from Ann Arbor.” [for those non-US, Ann Arbor is in Michigan and home to a famous university.]
Katarina makes no sense as a KGB agent married to Constantin Rostov as a cover, because the man was in Russia and traveling all over, but not to the US or the UK. Red: "She lived at at your house as your daughter on and off for four years. Sometimes you were there, sometimes you weren’t."
BUT as a CIA infiltrating the KGB covertly, it does, because it gave her access to the USSR, because Constantin had business in Novosibirsk: “to escape the dreary summers in Novosibirsk”, despite the fact that they lived in Cape Breton, Canada, where all memories that we saw of Kate before the fire take place.
Katarina was “helping to fan the flames of an uprising”, helping Fitch, who was getting rid of the conservatives like Berlin, who were opposed to the end of the USSR: "..."It was in '91. The Soviet Union was falling apart. A small group of us Members of the Politburo, the military, KGB, Stasi had a plan to push back the progressives, to stem the tide. We were meeting and discussing strategy when a bomb ..."
Katarina grew up in the US, as her toys attest. She is supposedly a childhood friend of Ilya. Red, who seems to be the Raymond Reddington known to the US Navy, grew up in the US, his stories are too consistent. He is a childhood friend of Ilya too. Then Ilya grew up in the US, at least partly in the American Midwest and/or the East Coast.
Rederina fans take that to mean that Red is Katarina. But all it means for sure is that both Red and Katarina are childhood friends of Ilya, which takes us to another man, both known to Red and Katarina, but whose connection to either one was well hidden: Sam Milhoan.

Fakerina does not seem to understand well the relationships between Dom, Red, Ilya and Katarina. She is an outsider. She was a KGB agent, or so she, and the world believe. She has used the alias Constance Drucker, as far back as 1986.
Our friend in Paris made a series of payments to him under the alias of Constance Drucker. As soon as you tell me about a Russian operative you did contract work for in 1986. She reached out to you recently.
She knows Liz is the daughter of Katarina Rostova and Raymond Reddington, and up until she heard of Koehler and impersonating a dead Reddington, she had treated Red as Raymond Reddington. She also said of Red that she cared for him at one time, and seems pained at killing him:
The Illusionist: He’ll give you what you want. Fakerina: I don’t want this. The Illusionist: He means a great deal to you. Fakerina: He did. Once.
And while she insisted that Red did not care for her, and was angry Red was feeding her his narrative, there is something in there that speaks to me of a relationship at some time: "I’ve always helped you"; "I came to Paris to warn you".; "Nobody knows you’re alive"; "I never betrayed you."
While she thinks Red used her too: "I don’t like this, Raymond. The whole ordeal pains me. Surely you understand that"; "You pretended to help me. You were never on my side."; "You came to Paris to control me, to keep feeding me your narrative. But I’m done hiding. I won’t do it anymore. I can’t. Not with Elizabeth asking questions and telling ghost stories."
As u/jen5225 explored in her excellent post, it is very likely that Fakerina is Liz's biological mother, even if she is not the woman who raised her until age 4. There is a woman who is her biological mother, who did not want her, who thought of her like a curse: "When your mother was pregnant with you, it was terribly inconvenient. The Cold War was ending. Her country was falling apart. Everything she had ever known. She dreaded having a child. Almost aborted it. Not one day of her pregnancy did she ever think of you as anything but a curse." A woman who did not want a child. A woman who wanted to abort the pregnancy. Who thought of Liz as a curse. A woman maybe coerced to have the child (as in the hanna Hayes episode) "I am done with men controlling my life! " That woman is Liz's biological mother.
But then there is the other side of the coin: "And then, from the second you were born there was never a day when she thought you were anything but a blessing." "She" is the mother who took her in, and loved her, the “she” who thought of Liz as a blessing, a woman not very secure in her role as a mother "You will not love her” Katarina told Kate. Dom's daughter is Liz's adoptive mother.
Fakerina definitely hates Dom, who set her up to blow up, even if she believes Dom was helping Liz:
Fakerina to Ilya: I know what Dominic thought. And he’s paying for his sins. And if he survives, I’ll find him again and finish the job. At least he believed he was protecting Masha. But you, you were my friend.
Fakerina does not understand the relationships between Ilya, Red and Dom, and between Ilya, Red and Katarina:
https://preview.redd.it/0bd72vkdkt441.png?width=1306&format=png&auto=webp&s=15edb0c088be24df8f8a338b69283c320df45b6d
she does not understand why Ilya is not giving her the information she wants, and she does not understand why Red would not hep her, or why Ilya would rather kill himself than help her:
How could you do this? How could you possibly be willing to die in order to protect him?! After all we’ve been through, Ilya….. Why won’t you help me? Why?
She thinks Ilya is protecting a male, maybe Reddington.
You’re protecting him. I made a promise. But you cared about me. Yes, and I do, but I
But she cannot understand why can’t they tell her what she needs: which I think is Katarina’s location AND/OR A fake death plan, maybe because the bones were turned to ashes.
Fakerina believed Ilya to have been a KGB too, as Rassvet had it. Yet Red, Katarina and Ilya grew up in the US. There is a surplus of KGB agents, especially brought up and living in the US: Dom as Oleander, Ilya Koslov, Katarina Rostova I and that is without going into Lena Volkova AKA Virginia King, whose cover is that she is Russian who emigrated to the US after the fall of the USSR. So, with this, we have to examine what is this business about Embassies that we get in Rassvet and in Orion Relocation. “She made contact at the embassy,” and in Rassvet we have a rather puzzling image in Dom’s tale, the Russian Embassy in the US, an Embassy that did not exist in 1991, with the wrong flag .
https://preview.redd.it/okwy3w5mkt441.png?width=330&format=png&auto=webp&s=f4a0f21e69e76d10e303350f907f21eb6f2fe6fe
There was a USSR Embassy, displaying the USSR flag. The USSR flag was replaced by the Russian flag, seen above after December 25th, 1991. In 1991 all personal of the embassy would be considered to be KGB. Ilya could no more run around DC and go to a train station to get a “lost” briefcase unobserved, after his name was called in the public announcement system, that he would be able to fly unaided.
So, if they all grew up in the US, and Dom lived there too, why that Rassvet story that Ilya worked in the Russian Embassy and that Ilya and Katarina went to Moscow to see Dom? And yet Ilya says two curious things in his memory recall:
She made contact at the embassy. Her father helped get us out of Russia.
We do not know who is “us”. In the tale “us” is Katarina and Ilya, who went there for reasons unknown that only Liz would not question. But that part of the story was prompted by Liz, who was misled by Dom earlier in season 5 "Ah, Katarina and I, we worked in the same building for a time. Ah, she was a legend already, even then. Everybody wanted to know her…. I saw you with her once. She had to stop by the office for something urgent, and and there you were, maybe 3 years old."
This leads Liz to think she used to live in Russia, instead of the Summer Palace, in Cape Breton, Canada: "He took me from her in Russia. She followed him to America where we were staying.", and she assumes Dom lived in Moscow, she and her mother lived in Moscow too, and when the part of the story comes up, she leads Dom: "She was going to see you in Moscow," and so, the story takes them to Moscow, which is about as nonsensical as it gets. Go by car or trains, miles into the USSR, looking like themselves, and staying in hotels. But then the cherry on the ice-cream is the call from St. Petersburg to Nebraska, that created a clear link to Liz. Only Liz would believe that nonsense, coated in the sweet scent of family.
While Dom was supposed to be KGB, and used the name Oleander, which is like using the codename Rose. Why not Narcissus which is another plant with beautiful poisonous flowers, but a male name too? Or Foxglove?
Dom’s fingerprints were not in the system, yet the CIA has a dossier on him, when he, supposedly a Russian immigrant after 1991, was investigated as a known KGB operative, Oleander? A man who has a house in the US with his daughter’s toys? Sure he could have gone to Russia after Katarina grew up, but is that likely, especially when Dom’s fingerprints are not on file. That looks like a scrub job. This whole thing of Dom being KGB, Ilya being KGB looks suspicious.
The we have the curious attitude of the CIA towards Katarina Rostova. The Russian section of the CIA denies that Katarina Rostova even existed in season 2: "I don’t think there are any photographs of Katarina Rostova....She’s a myth. Tall tales late at night over vodka shots. Probably an amalgamation of a half-a-dozen unknown female Soviet operatives– the Pinko Mata Hari."
And then, Peter Kotsiopulous acknowledged Liz being the daughter of notorious KGB spy:
Peter K on televised hearing : They are based upon information provided by Raymond Reddington, a traitor to our country and a fugitive who is helping ex-FBI Special Agent Elizabeth Keen avoid arrest. The daughter of a notorious KGB spy, Keen is a wanted terrorist.
But when Liz comes in threatening with him with exposure, it is clear he knew Liz’s mother personally: "I never saw it before....How much you look like your mother." A theme that seems common that when Liz is threatening, being evasive, and betraying, people say she reminds them of her mother (Red and Dembe).
So, logic says Katarina and Ilya did NOT go to Russia. So, who did “her father” get out of Russia with Ilya? And is “her father” Dom? Was Ilya feeding Fakerina the same story Dom told Liz? Or was Ilya in Russia already? Was Ilya pretending to be a KGB agent? Fakerina certainly believed he was. And if he was in Russia, which embassy would he be working on? How about the American one in Moscow? Did he come to the US to help Katarina?
Now remember Ilyas Surkov, the dead terrorist that the CIA decides to use for false flag operations? Brian Osterman, a CIA officer operating exclusively in black ops, is tapped by Director Wilcox to create a shadow task force, using the name Tobias Reuther, an operation that the CIA can disavow, except they soon are not catching Surkov, who is dead, they are using his name to do counterintelligence business. And Agent Colburn thinks she is working for the CIA, which she really is not, she is working for a black op task force acting as Ilya Surkov, while the CIA has deniability. Except the idea was Director Cox. So, she is working for him. Until Osterman decides that Cox is not doing the right thing, so, he decides to stop him.
I think that Ilya Koslov was acting as if he were KGB, recruited Fakerina by seducing her, sic her on his childhood friend Raymond Reddington, and then they used her name and KGB credentials to create a Trojan horse with Katarina, because both women looked alike. We never saw the face of young Fakerina in the Belgrade incident, but we know this actress was playing “Young Woman”, she does not seem to be the actress playing the woman who runs out in her nightgown:
https://preview.redd.it/ex15rv7imt441.png?width=491&format=png&auto=webp&s=4450be70a7b1791cfd98acc8fcde24b0eeb4607a
so, she might be the actress playing young Fakerina, who we do not really see, her hair under a scarf, and the scene very dark. Kathleen Littlefield (left) certainly looks very similar to Lotte Verbeek.
What I know is that the idea that Ilya Koslov was truly a KGB agent working in the Russian Embassy in Washington in the US is likely a fabrication, as that lovely plaid seems to indicate.
https://preview.redd.it/orkxk3gumt441.png?width=504&format=png&auto=webp&s=161236a8fc86d46d32b7cfa736e96700dcbb2032
So, what was Ilya trying to keep secret?
https://preview.redd.it/sb9jy4eymt441.png?width=1306&format=png&auto=webp&s=73dd162b8595920e42040ef4929b47b8b63bd90e
Dom’s daughter’s whereabouts. A woman who wanted to protect her child, by staying as far as possible from her, who would no more come near as a neighbor under a fake identity, than she would become Reddington and then surrender to the FBI to get to know her.
Katarina Rostova, mythic spy, was a figment, an amalgamation of several women which created an illusion. I think 2 cousins were the core of the charade: Fakerina AKA Katarina Rostova and Dom’s daughter AKA Katarina Rostova.
“The concept of bilocation is appealing even if not without consequence.”
“You were the architect of this charade.”
So, is Liz now bring with Fakerina to find out who Red is a repeat of doing the same with Jennifer in season 6A? Yes, and there is a point to it. Liz trusts people she thinks or knows to be relatives, and looks to distrust a man she prefers as a non-father, because she needs to maintain the illusion that her daddy did not abandon her, and she did not sent him to die in season 6. She wants the idea of a good daddy. Now she is going for a good mommy. A mommy that was a victim.
When I thought he was my father, I hated him for abandoning me. I thought he shirked responsibility. But now I know he takes it on even when he doesn't have to. I was nobody to him. The illegitimate daughter of a childhood friend. And he devoted half his life to me.
Excuse her role in shooting him:
but in trying to find out if you were the devil, I learned my mother was. That tape they played at your trial? She destroyed my father. She's the reason he ran. I shot him, but she's responsible for his death.
and finding a way to believe that her mom was not a bad person, when Fakerina paints herself as a victim. In other words, Liz will stick her head in the sand with gusto, and make Red into a monster, because she, like Jennifer wants to punish him for abandoning her.
NOTE: I will answer to questions and comments if I am tagged u/TessaBissolli. I am exhausted by the negativity, and being told there is only one answer Rederina. I am reducing my comments to a minimum and not getting tangled in the never-ending posts about how bad the writing is, MB is, etc. Or how we should sweep all that does not fit as bad writing. I intend to block permanently anyone who tells me to go fuck myself, insults me, etc. Life is too short to waste it on negative nellies and there are plenty of interesting people who want to discuss the show.
