Horse derby betting strategies without save-scumming
I compiled a few SoS: FoMT horse derby betting strategies if save-scumming ain't your thing. If you don't want to make the game too easy by earning a shit ton of gold fairly quickly, then turn back NOW.
Strategy 1: Bet on yourself The most obvious one. Shouldn't even have to explain this.
Strategy 2: Lower your risk/reward and bet on multiple horses There's going to be math here so a little bit of caution if you don't like numbers. 2a. Is it worth betting on multiple horses? Assuming that you want to receive the same amount of medals regardless of the winning horse, first, you gotta see if it's actually worth betting on multiple horses or not. The following formula determines whether it is worth it or not:
If you multiply the result by the total amount of medals you bet, this is how much you will get back if one of your horses win. For example, say you're betting on 2 horses with the following multipliers:
Horse 1: 4x
Horse 2: 2x
Result: 1 / [(1 / 2) + (1 / 4)] = 1.33
If you bet 100 medals across both horses, you will get 133 medals back if either of them wins. In general, higher multipliers will give a higher result and the higher this number is, the better, but you don't want it to be less than or equal to 1. Your actual returns in terms of gold will be higher, of course, since you can exchange your medals for brooches, giving each medal an effective value of 100g (Medals are 50g each, and brooches are 18 medals each and ship for 1800g). 2b. How many medals to bet on each horse? After determining 2a, say you wanna bet 100 medals in total because you want 133 medals back, how do you split the 100 up among your horses? This part is simple. Just take the amount of medals you want to get back (133 in this example), then divide it by each horse's multiplier. For example:
Horse 1: 133 / 4 = 33 (33.25)
Horse 2: 133 / 2 = 67 (66.5)
Total: 33 + 67 = 100
As expected, due to decimals, you may have to round up or down, so you may not get 133 exactly, but you will get something very close if any of your horses win.
Strategy 3: Don't bet on yourself I've never done this because my horse is doo doo, but in theory, it should work. If your horse is really good, therefore, has a low multiplier, you can lower your risk by throwing the race, essentially making it a 3-horse race with fairly high multipliers, then betting on one horse or using strategy 2 on some or even all of the other horses. Of course, don't do this in real life because gambling attracts some pretty shady people, and you might find yourself being woken up by Doctor and Elly the following morning with one eye shut and a couple missing teeth.
Strategy 4: Don't bet at all Gambling is bad, folks. How about try earning your gold honestly by abusing the generosity of the harvest sprites and slaving them in your pineapple/yam/eggplant plantation for little to no compensation at all? After all, this is pretty much how it works in real life, right?

Late night thoughts took me to Mikeys bet in the kindergarten Derby episode. I wondered just how many winger dingers Mikey would have won. He did win the bet after all. So I did the math. 37 winger dingers at the odds of 99/1 would have yielded roughly 3,700 winger dingers, unless I've done the numbers wrong. .....where the fuck is Hustler Kid supposed to get that much candy 😂
Hey guys - what are some of your favorite wagering strategies for the Derby? It's the only day other than maybe the Breeders Cup where I go pretty wild at the window regarding the exotics. The enormous pools filled with dumb money leading to potentially life changing payouts are too enticing to pass up. However, it's still advisable to keep the ticket costs low for most of us. Having said that, how do y'all like to structure your tickets for such a race?
Anyone else betting on Derby today? I got $75 on Always Dreaming to win and a $20 on Thunder Snow but I might cancel that if the track becomes less muddy. Post time is at 6:34 EST.
