To preview the 2020 NFL season, we asked more than 50 league executives, coaches, scouts and players to help us stack the top 10 players at 11 different positions (sorry, special-teamers). The results might surprise you. They surprised me. Here's how it worked: Voters gave their best 10 to 15 players at a position, then we compiled the results and ranked candidates based on number of top-10 votes, composite average, interviews and research. We had several ties, so we broke them by isolating the two-man matchup with additional voting and follow-up calls. Each section is packed with quotes and nuggets from the voters on every guy -- even the honorable mentions.
Age: 29 | Highest ranking: 1 | Lowest ranking: 5 Nearly every vote for Mack was top-three, helping to separate him from Chandler Jones in a tight race for the top spot. Mack's 8.5 sacks and 19.6% pass-rush win rate don't begin to demonstrate his capacity for disruption. "He can get home in every way -- he can go through you or around you," said one NFL defensive coordinator. Added a defensive assistant coach: "Your game plan doesn't matter with him." Chicago's defense last season paled in comparison to the 2018 edition, which coaches say affected Mack's bottom line. The Bears bet on Leonard Floyd winning on the other side and he failed, resulting in more attention sent Mack's way. New addition Robert Quinn can anchor one side to help Mack, who still posted an 86.2 Pro Football Focus grade. "He doesn't get past the quarterback very often because he bends so well, has speed-to-power and finishes at the level of the quarterback," a veteran defensive coach said. "And he's relentless."
Age: 30 | Highest ranking: 1 | Lowest ranking: 7 Jones has become the league's most consistent edge player, averaging 14.5 sacks each season since 2015, four times with Arizona. "His rush skill set is as diverse and versatile as anybody I've been around," a longtime NFL defensive coach said. "You don't see it as much with the way they use him in Arizona, but he is an excellent interior pass-rusher and they don't put him in there very much. He's more than capable rushing inside. Unbelievable flexibility and body control. Uses hands very well, student of the game. He's got everything." Jones also gets credit for producing despite playing without many stars around him in Arizona. He can stop the run or dominate third down. And he tied for the league lead with eight forced fumbles. "Nobody talks about him because his team stunk," one NFL offensive coach said. "But he produces every week."
Age: 22 | Highest ranking: 1 | Lowest ranking: 8 Bosa surpassed expectations in the voting, and made a serious push for the No. 1 overall spot. The league is envious of the 49ers for stealing Bosa No. 2 overall in 2019 thanks in part to Jimmy Garoppolomissing 13 games the year before. "Jimmy G's busted knee was a blessing," one NFL general manager said. "Motor, speed, smart, hard to block." One exec whose team played the 49ers last year was impressed -- and frustrated -- watching Bosa in person, pointing out his nine sacks don't do him justice. "We literally had no answer for him," the exec said. "Completely dominated us." To be sure, Bosa is fortunate to play on a dynamic defensive line across the board. And he's more of a compact rusher than one who dominates with length. But evaluators say his talent stands alone. "It's very difficult to be impactful as rookie, even for great players," a longtime defensive line coach said. "He did that as well as anybody I can think of. Great quickness and speed."
Age: 31 | Highest ranking: 1 | Lowest ranking: 7 Miller had recorded at least 10 sacks in every full season he played since 2011, but with production dropping to eight sacks in 15 games last year, questions exist about whether the premier rusher of the decade has slipped slightly. Here's the truth with Miller: Even a slightly diminished version of Miller is better than just about anyone else. "You're still sliding protection to him most of the game," a veteran NFL defensive coach said. "There are only a handful of players who command that attention, and he still does." Miller still bends the edge among the best, and the return of Bradley Chubb from injury should open more rushing lanes for the 10-year vet. And his 20.3% pass-rush win rate is still solid. "I'd still take him over just about anyone," an NFC exec said. "If I need one player to get me one sack on a crucial third down, he's the guy."
Age: 24 | Highest ranking: 1 | Lowest ranking: 10 Raw talent and a wild combination of speed to power have him knocking on the door of the top three. But many coaches and evaluators say he's not there yet; they're waiting on him to put it all together. "You can set up a plan to neutralize him," an NFL defensive coach said. "He won't dominate each game plan. You do build the plan around him. He gets long in his movement, can't take those quick 3-4 seconds around the edge." A different assistant says Garrett has "first-ballot ability" and completely dominates whole games at times, as evidenced by his 26.2% pass rush win rate. But that dominance comes and goes. In 10 games last year, Garrett had zero sacks in four of them, and two or more in three of them. "If it's going well early, he's unstoppable," the coach said. "If he starts slow, it's survival mode until it's a passing down. A physical tackle with decent ability makes him struggle a little bit." Then there's the six-game suspension last year for hitting Pittsburgh Steelersquarterback Mason Rudolph over the head with his own helmet. The evaluators interviewed about Garrett didn't condone the incident and cited it an example of immaturity, but also didn't label Garrett a character concern. He simply made a mistake, most say. As far as pass-rushing traits, only Khalil Mack has more than Garrett, several execs said.
Age: 24 | Highest ranking: 4 | Lowest ranking: 9 Bosa didn't get enough top-five votes to crack the threshold, but as far as pure pass rushing, there aren't many better. He's channeling Tim Duncan when he rushes, combining textbook discipline with flair. "Uses length well, long arm stab, fundamentals, dynamic moves -- he's got it all," one NFL coordinator said. "He's got unique tape, because he's wide, and because of the way he runs and moves, it's hard to tell what he'll do." That Bosa has one pass deflection in four seasons is curious. Mack, Jones and Miller all have more than 10 over that span. But it's hard to complain with 40 sacks in 51 career games to launch a decorated career. Most agree Joey Bosa is a more refined pass-rusher than Nick right now, but they prefer Nick's motor and explosion for the long term.
Age: 25 | Highest ranking: 4 | Lowest ranking: 12 Not many players maximize their abilities quite like Watt, who was wildly productive with 14.5 sacks and a league-leading eight forced fumbles (tied with Jones). If that wasn't enough, Watt won on 27.7% of his pass rushes, tops among this group. "He does it in every category," a veteran NFL defensive coach said. "If he had Josh Allen's athletic ability, he would be No. 1 on this list." That's really the only knock on Watt: Some prefer the raw explosion from the players ranked higher. But Watt still got several top-five votes while surprising many along the way. As one Steelers player told me, he didn't really know what to expect when Watt got drafted three years ago. He had knee ligament issues at Wisconsin, where he started as a tight end. That uncertainty changed in a hurry. "As soon as he showed up it was like, oh s---," the player said.
Age: 27 | Highest ranking: 5 | Lowest ranking: 12 There are more productive rushers than Clark, but follow the money on this one. The Chiefs knew what they were doing when they made him the second-highest-paid edge rusher at $21 million per year, behind Mack. Clark slightly edged out Cam Jordan in composite voting, logging more combined fifth- and sixth-place votes. "He's not in conversation solely based on the year he had [eight sacks], but this year he will end up being a major presence," an NFL coordinator said. "Second year in the [Chiefs'] system, he's got speed and power, good feel for countermoves, and can play the run." Clark, who had two double-digit-sack seasons in Seattle, sometimes gets overeager chasing sacks, but is a complete player when he's more disciplined, according to one NFC exec.
Age: 30 | Highest ranking: 5 | Lowest ranking: 10 Jordan hasn't missed a game in nine seasons and continues to get better, posting a career-high 15.5 sacks with an 87.6 Pro Football Focus rating last year. But if you're looking for stylish play, Jordan isn't tops on the list. "He's got Frankenstein feet. It's not a fun watch," one NFL defensive coach said. "But he makes plays every year and he's their leader." If you're looking for results, consider Jordan made every Top 10 ballot, a sign of respect for an elite player on an elite team. Though his 15.9% pass-rush win rate ranked 44th in the league, his game is hardly limited to numbers. "Gets better every year, three-down player, run and pass -- the whole package gets him on the list," a veteran defensive coach said.
Age: 28 | Highest ranking: 3 | Lowest ranking: Off the ballot Lawrence and Danielle Hunter had an equal number of votes, but Lawrence broke the tie with two more top-five votes than Hunter. It's surprising to see a player with five sacks last season on this list, but Lawrence drew steady double-teams while Quinn ate up sacks. "At some point you have to go through somebody -- if you can't, the tackle will sit soft on you and speed will be mitigated," an NFC exec said. "[Lawrence] is one of the best at using his power." Lawrence won on 25.8% of his pass rushes, which makes his low sack total curious. But coaches like his versatility to rush the passer or stop the run. He also earned an 86.3 PFF rating last year. "He's not as consistent a pass-rusher as I'd like, but he's deserving," a veteran defensive coach said. "Can rush inside and out."
Honorable mention
Danielle Hunter,Minnesota Vikings: "Not as bendy or twitchy as you'd like, but one of the strongest players in the league. He really surprised me. I didn't think he would be this good coming out of LSU." -- NFL defensive coach Za'Darius Smith,Green Bay Packers: "You saw him start to take. He's more explosive than given credit for. And he's got a plan for every down." -- NFL coordinator Jadeveon Clowney, free agent: "Double-teamed all the time, lots of touches on the QB, picks and chooses when he wants to play the run." -- NFL offensive coach Matt Judon,Baltimore Ravens: "Fascinated to see how this plays out in Baltimore, because he had a great year and natural pass-rush talent, but Baltimore also surrounded him with a lot of talent and set him up for success, too." -- AFC scout Yannick Ngakoue,Jacksonville Jaguars: "He's a DPR: Designated Pass Rusher. He's not known for stopping the run, though I think he can do that, too. But he's mostly disruptive as a pass rusher. He can do that well." -- NFC exec
Welcome to the triumphant return of the Premier League Previews, a series where a fan gives an overview of his team for your perusal, and I get an excuse to take pot-shots at other clubs. This will run until the eve of the Premier League, taking a look at each club in turn. Our final preview of the season analyses our reigning champions, Manchester City. About
Established: 1880 (as St. Mark's)/1894 (as Manchester City)
It went well. It went very well. After Manchester City’s Centurions season in 2017/18 saw them run away with the title setting all manner of records as they went, there was a lot of expectation that we’d see a much closer race in 2018/19. That proved to be the case as City finished 2 points shy of their record-setting total and only won the league by a single point, yet it was still the second highest points total in Premier League history and was topped off with a unique domestic clean sweep (3 or 4 domestic trophies depending on your feelings about the Community Shield). The season kicked off with confident 2-0 victories over Chelsea in the Community Shield and Arsenal in the league opener before Kevin De Bruyne’s injury problems began (injury problems that would plague the majority of his season). His absence didn’t prove to be as pivotal as many feared/hoped, however, thanks in no small part to Bernardo Silva’s formidable season. After the opening months City had dropped just 4 points and were looking strong, and then December happened. The packed month included 9 matches across all competitions and it took its toll as City lost 3 of their 7 Premier League matches. Heading into January with Liverpool still unbeaten the title looked lost until the top two met at the Etihad. A true heavyweight clash delivered in entertainment and saw City take all three points by the very finest of margins as John Stones made a vital clearance through the legs of Mohamed Salah with just 11mm to spare. After beating Liverpool City dropped just 3 more points, ending the season on a remarkable 14-game winning streak to claim the first back-to-back Premier League trophy in 10 years.
This Season
While the squad is (on paper) quite comparable to the ones that set both the highest and second highest Premier League points totals in consecutive seasons, the loss of Vincent Kompany is difficult to quantify. Cynics might reasonably point out that City are losing an ageing centre-half who only plays sporadically and is prone to occasional hasty decisions meaning they will just have to give more minutes to a younger centre-half in John Stones, who also appeared sporadically and is prone to occasional hasty decisions. In a strictly material sense that might all be true, but in among Kompany’s hasty decisions was an improbable 30-yard potshot in the 70th minute against Leicester that won the match and kept the title race in City’s hands. It’s his remarkable force of will, his experienced leadership, and his eagerness to carry the weight of the team on his shoulders when no one else can that will be missed with the departure of Kompany and it remains to be seen if there is anyone that will step and lead in the same way. There’s some change at the back for City this season. Stones and Laporte are expected to be the first choice central pairing, but Otamendi (as the most experienced centre-half in the squad, capable of playing on the right or left side, and probably the best aerial defender in the squad) is likely to be leaned on more this coming season than last. The fourth spot will likely be a straight head-to-head between Fernandinho and the promising young Eric Garcia. At fullback there’s a little more attacking impetus than previously - Zinchenko increasingly looks like a real left back, but Mendy’s injury troubles continue, so Angelino has been brought back to maintain the depth that the outgoing Fabian Delph provided but with more of an attacking mindset. On the right you can expect Walker to finally get some days off with the introduction of another attack-minded option in Joao Cancelo. The future of the number 6 position looks to finally have been figured out with the signing of Rodri after various misfires in the transfer market and with any luck we’ll have the joy of watching a fully fit Kevin De Bruyne all season. It remains to be seen what role David Silva will play in his final year, especially with Phil Foden needing all the minutes he can get if he is to replace the Spanish stalwart long-term. Should Sane stay It will be the same again up top with quality depth abound all vying for their place in the matchday XI. Riyad Mahrez began finding his feet at the tail end of 18/19 with a run of strong performances so the hope, should Sane leave, is that Mahrez will continue that form and prove an ample replacement for the upcoming season. Last season there was a need to prove that the 100 point season wasn’t a fluke. 98 points and 5 out of 5 pieces of domestic silverware later it’s been pretty well established that City probably are in fact that good and may well be able to continue putting up these kinds of numbers until either Pep leaves or the rest of the league adapts (whichever comes first). All incoming/outgoing transfersFull 2019-20 squad 3 players to watch out for David Silva Worth watching out for if only because this is likely to be the last Premier League season for one of the league's greats. On top of that, with the departure of Vincent Kompany, David Silva will be the most senior member of the dressing room and is widely expected to take on the captaincy. Despite making his name as an archetypical number 10, David Silva has managed to stand out as a dynamic and modern number 8 - while at 33 he may not be quite the player he once was but he continues to provide much of the creativity in the final third so enjoy him while you can. Rodri The number 6 position in general will be one to watch this season. In previous years Fernandinho has been undisputed first choice, but at 34 years of age he can’t last forever. Ilkay Gundogan started to make a case for himself in the run-in last season having finally added a little extra defensive nous to his already outstanding passing range and ended the season as a starter. New signing Rodri (at age 23) appears to be the future of the number 6 role - touted by many as Busquets 2.0 and now training under the same coach that brought Busquets to the world’s attention, Rodri’s ascent seems inevitable, but arriving in a new league and playing rather a different style of football will test his adaptability in the short-term. Kevin De Bruyne Not exactly a hidden gem here but your life can only be improved by watching out for a fully fit KDB. De Bruyne was among the very best players in the League (if not world) in 2017/18 but struggled significantly with injuries and missed much of last season. It may seem like a stretch to say that he was “missed” given the levels City reached last season but when he’s in the team City can transition much more efficiently and there’s always a sense that one pass could cut open even the most resolute defence. What the fans think Thanks to /MCFCfor their help.
How do you think this season will go?
Last season was an unprecedened success, winning every domestic trophy possible. The aim for this season will obviously be to continue on as we have been domestically, and improve in Europe. The past two campaigns have been disappointing, and I think we can do better - but will we? It's hard to say. However, I think we're the most equipped team to fight on two fronts - especially after signing Rodri, in a position we've always lacked cover - so I think retaining the title is feasible, and I'd be happy with an improved performance in Europe.
I think we'll win the league. I think our fixture schedule is fairly kind to us (easier run-in than Liverpool and most of our tricky away games are in the first half of the season when we're usually on fire). I trust our players a lot more this time around - although you could argue that the Old Guard carried us in the final weeks of last season, the younger players have got experience and confidence now, and I think that's invaluable.
Which player is going to be your star of the season and why?
KDB has looked frightening ever since he came off the bench at the FA Cup (not to mention his performance against Tottenham before his last injury). He seems angry and frustrated about last season, as if he's got something to prove. I think he's a shoe-in for our player of the season if he can stay fit. I can also see Jesus and Mahrez really coming into their own this season; both of them suffered from low confidence last season, and I think the summers that they had and their great performances at the end of last season signal a lot of growth from both of them.
I think we'll win the league again. This time around I don't think it'll be a close title race like it was last season. We'll get around 93 points while Liverpool will finish second and get around 88 points. In the FA and League cup, I think we'll win one the two and may get knocked out early in the other one. I think this season in the CL, we'll finally reach the final but lose the final.
Gonna go with Bernardo Silva. Let him play his own game and he is one of the best in the league. You would be hard pressed to find many better in the division. Down and up the pitch he works tirelessly. Never gives up. Gonna be hard to find anyone to outperform him this season. Run, pass, shoot, tackle, he can do it all. Around him he has an aura of a greatness.
4-3-3 like always, but with even more depth. Ederson; Walker, Stones, Laporte, Zinchenko; Rodri/Dinho, Silva, KdB; Sterling, Aguero, Bernardo, should be our first choice starting XI. Rodri vs Dinho is anyone's guess. If Mahrez steps up, we might see Bernardo moved to the midfield paired with KdB. Aguero will continue to start over Jesus, Nico will likely rotate with Stones and Cancelo (if he comes) will rotate with WalkeZinchenko. We might even see Mendy play a full match before the season ends.
And now we come to the hardest part, predicting the line up. Desert any dreams on consistency at the door. You are going to see a lot of rotation from City this season. Never assume we will have everyone healthy at the same time, but if we do I think this is how we will line up.
by NickTM The Manager: The legendary Pep Guardiola. Not much to say about him that hasn't already been said at length. A managerial genius, Guardiola's dogmatic adherence to the style of play he passionately believes in is no deterrence to the outright dominance of his teams. With 28 pieces of silverware in his collection as a manager alone, he's as close to a guaranteed title win as you can get from a manager of a top club. Entering his 11th year of top-level manager, his brilliance remains undimmed. The Team: Simply put, Manchester City's team is terrifying. It's unlikely any club team has brought to bear this level of depth in talent in the Premier League at very least. Ederson holds court between the sticks in his third season at the club, and Aymeric Laporte partners one of Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones just in front. Danilo has been replaced by Joao Cancelo at right back, and Oleksandr Zinchenko's highly successful conversion to left back makes him the leading contender for that spot. It's in midfield where the team wins their games, though, a superlative array of talent fronted by Silvas David and Bernardo, held together by Fernandinho (and the newly arrived Rodri) and powered by Ilkay Gündogan's dynamism. An attacking trio containing Raheem Sterling, the supremely reliable Sergio Aguero, Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus will be affected but not brought low by the unfortunate loss of Leroy Sane. That's without even mentioning the brilliance of the returning Kevin De Bruyne, the promise of Phil Foden or the absolute talent of Scott Carson. It is a glittering squad. Why to like them: Guardiola's teams play football 'the right way' (tm) and whilst their style of play isn't necessarily my favourite, it's hard to not appreciate the sheer fluidity of attack and technical prowess being displayed. Raheem Sterling has also blossomed from the kid with a dodgy agent who sacked off Liverpool at a moment's notice to England's leading attacking talent and icon for the fight against discrimination in football. Why to dislike them: Their owners essentially launder the image of a brutal, oppressive regime as well as their own grimy reputations simply by owning a successful football team, and it clearly worked for City fans. Personally, despite all the fanboying over their playstyle, I'm not really much of a fan. Pep Guardiola has a tendency to be unbearably smug at times. Also, they're really fucking good, so it's fun to watch them lose. Summary: Got it in the bag, surely? Man City replaced their major first team loss in Danilo and propped up Fernandinho's advancing age with his heir apparent in Rodri. Their strength in depth continues to be unrivaled, and Raheem Sterling continues to improve as Sergio Aguero has shown no signs of slowing down. The major questions for me revolve first around losing Leroy Sane, which takes away not just some options in depth but also a truly direct runner that City could well miss against certain teams. More notable might be the intangible loss of Vincent Kompany, the City legend departing to Anderlecht as player-manager. Kompany's leadership and will to win were obvious even in one of his numerous spells on the sidelines, and when he got on the pitch he'd produce moments of brilliance that have kept Man City alive when they were faltering - the most recent being that wonderful goal against Leicester that sent them top. It's a strong team with a lot of experienced leaders, but it's hard to calculate the value of such a talisman until he's gone. With all that said, you'd be a fool to bet against them retaining their title, and you have to make them favourites at this early stage.
The Barclays is back boys, which means the managerial merry go round is about to hit the accelerator and kick into overdrive. This cruel fairground ride is bound to claim a fair share of victims over the course of the season, but who will be first? Last year Frank de Boer took home the gold in a record smashing 4(!) games; surely nobody will leave their club as fast as the Dutchman, but here’s my personal take on how each manager may fair this season. AFC Bournemouth – Eddie Howe Bournemouth are weird aren’t they. They’ve become somewhat of a Premier League mainstay, whilst maintaining the feeling of being a Championship side. I like them, they’re cool. Another cool thing is the man at the helm ‘future England manager,’ Eddie Howe. He’s done an insanely fantastic job in getting his side to this stage and is a club legend for sure, even if the club struggle, I can’t see Howe being sacked. Stranger things have happened in football, such as Robert Green going to Chelsea, but Howe staying put seems inevitable. Sack Race odds: 20/1 (All odds from SkyBet) Arsenal – Unai Emery It still doesn’t quite feel real to talk about Arsenal sans Arsene Wenger; he’s been the gunners’ leader for the entire span of my interest in football, but all good things must come to an end, and good things can be birthed from such endings, so in comes the Europa League specialist, Unai Emery. Will he be sacked first? Almost certainly not, in fact, Emery seems like he is poised for success with the London club, with a host of important new signings and a proven philosophy. However, I can’t help but get flashbacks to when David Moyes replaced Sir Alex Ferguson. The burden was too large, Moyes drank from the poison chalice of management, causing his tactical brain to explode, and he never truly recovered. Hopefully for Unai, this chalice is slightly less poisonous and he can work some magic when stepping into Wenger’s shoes. Sack Race odds: 33/1 Brighton and Hove Albion – Chris Hughton What a lovely man Hughton is, he’s worked harder than anyone to make it in the Premier League. It wasn’t meant to be at Newcastle or Norwich, but little Chris has found his true love at the Amex Stadium. Brighton sailed to a highly successful maiden season in the Premier League, and a vast amount of that credit has to go to Hughton. He changed things up by adding the likes of Schelotto over club legend Bruno, allowed Pascal Groß to work his magic feet and played to the strengths of Glenn Murray, who ended up bagging 11 league goals. Second season syndrome looms in the air, but if Hughton keeps it fresh again his love affair on the south coast will continue to blossom. Sack Race odds: 16/1 Burnley – Sean Dyche If the 2018/2019 managerial sack race is won by Sean Dyche, I’ll eat a worm. Dyche is everything that makes Burnley tick, he and the club are basically those two old fellas you see in the pub every night drinking dark mild, it’s an unbreakable bond. Dyche is well aware of the club’s strengths, weaknesses and how to squeeze the best out of every fixture. The only issue rearing its ugly head is that of overachievement and squad depth; Europa League qualification was something nobody could have predicted for the claret side and people surely can’t expect Dyche and company to repeat the feat this year, especially with the extra burden of having to get his paper thin squad through a highly populated fixture list. Sack Race odds: 20/1 Cardiff City – Neil Warnock Neil Warnock is somehow not the favourite to depart his side quickest this season. Warnock has forever been the Premier League bridesmaid, but never the bride, as whilst he has a very impressive Championship record, he’s never cut the mustard in the top division. He sits in the void between Premier League and Championship alongside the likes of Lewis Grabban, Dwight Gayle and Cameron Jerome, in that they’re all too good for the Championship but simply are not built for the trial and tribulations of the Premier League. Sadly for Warnock, his success will again be his own downfall. Sack Race odds: 8/1 Chelsea – Maurizio Sarri Sarriball is an interesting entity in football. It’ll entertain, it’ll win hearts and minds, but as of yet, it has failed to win a top level trophy. Will his stylish brand win one this year? I think not. Whilst his tactics are excellent and his style is easy on the eye, it takes time to implement such a system, especially in an entirely new league. Undoubtedly Sarri needs a sufficient tenure to implement his intelligent plan, so sacking him before even giving him a hope of getting everything in place would be pure madness, even from a notoriously non-reactionary, cool headed fellow such as Roman Abramovich. Sack Race odds: 33/1 Crystal Palace – Roy Hodgson Roy the boy rides again! At the tender age of 70 (the oldest in the league) Hodgson enters his first full season with Crystal Palace after working wonders there last season. With De Boer at the wheel the club were on a highway to hell (a.k.a the Championship) but Hodgson steered them to safety and got everyone at Crystals nightclub grooving again. He’s been there and done it all before so when it’s all said and done I wouldn’t be surprised to see Roy standing tall once again. Who knows, if he has an incredible showing, maybe he could be England manager one day… Sack Race odds: 20/1 Everton – Marco Silva I’ll save you the classic Paul Merson jokes, but Mr Silva has proven quite popular in the top division hasn’t he. Silva laid his roots at Hull, then started turning up trees with Watford, before proving to be a thorn in his own side after getting his head turned by the Ev in the winter. Everton finally got their man and should he be able to get them playing like Watford early last season, they’ll be off to a flyer. The question mark however, is on the defensive side. Silva knows how to get his creative players into the game but his teams are often leakier than the Titanic, which doesn’t bode well for England’s world cup hero Jordan Pickford. Sack Race odds: 18/1 Fulham – Slavisa Jokanovic Are you a football hipster? Do you like walking down the river side to your favourite cereal café? Do you love nothing more than your team’s home ground to be an old hunting lodge? Well Fulham is the team for you and Slavisa Jokanovic might just be your new best friend. Jokanovic has hauled his team back to the big time by having each and every one of his players invest in his brand of attractive, attacking football. Now with the likes of Mitrovic, Seri, Schurrle, Sessegnon and Cairney at the manager’s disposal we could be looking at the breakout team of the season and a influx of new Fulham fans from across the globe. Sack Race odds: 20/1 Huddersfield Town – David Wagner I mentioned second season syndrome before with Brighton, but the eerie stench smells much greater in regards to Huddersfield. They almost burnt out last year and despite signing some decent players (Kongolo permanently, Durm, Sobhi etc.) they are once again, a firm favourite for the drop. The question that is begged then is this, will a bad season see Wagner be sacked in a bid to change the fortunes of the club? I would say possibly yes. Whilst before I did speak of the love towards Dyche and Howe from their clubs, in this world of money and power there is little room for loyalty in football anymore, and Wagner is a man I fear for if things begin to go south. Sack Race odds: 16/1 Leicester City – Claude Puel Tensions got nasty between Puel and Leicester last season. There were warm beginnings due to the removal of Craig Shakespeare, but if there’s two things Leicester fans do not like it’s, 1.) winning just three games in fourteen to end the season, and 2.) playing a boring style of football. He’s certainly one of the favourites to win the sack race, despite his side being expected to finish around the middle of the table, so I would be extremely fearful for his head if Leicester don’t kick off well. After all, this is the board that sacked Ranieri after he pulled off the impossible dream. Sack Race odds: 7/1 Liverpool – Jurgen Klopp Despite Klopp being at the helm of Liverpool for less than three years, it just feels right that he’s there. Like hand in glove, bacon and egg, Northern Rail and cancelling trains; they just fit together. They’ve signed better than any of their Premier League rivals and finally have the squad depth to mount a challenge on all fronts. Anything less than top 4 (maybe even 3) and a decent run in the Champion’s League would be a disappointment, but it seems written in the stars that Klopp will once again deliver what is expected from the Kop faithful. Sack Race odds: 80/1 Manchester City – Pep Guardiola City fans must be glad all over that they have Pep at the helm, at the City board surely feel the same. The blue half of Manchester exploded into life last season and performed to a level which many would say was the greatest showing in Premier League history. Pep has the highest odds on winning the sack race, and rightly so, as this season they look to have even more firepower with Mahrez arriving, and further stability with Foden and Laporte vying for first team action. They’ll probably win the league again, just hopefully not at such a canter to make things interesting. For now though, his bald-fraudometer reading remains at zero. Sack Race odds: 100/1 Manchester United – Jose Mourinho From the bookies’ least fancied, to their most fancied; Jose Mourinho is on the brink of destruction at Manchester United it would seem. Mourinho’s that fella that you have in your five-a-side team who does some daft skill in his own half, loses it, you concede, but he never accepts that he’s in the wrong it up, and instead throws a paddy and blames everyone else. He’s already fallen out with a plethora of people at Old Trafford including: Luke Shaw, Ed Woodward and even his own fans’ home support. Plus, with his reign at Chelsea ending in tears following a conspiracy and tirade against Eva Carneiro, we can expect some fireworks to fly during Mourinho press conferences this year, and further rifts between the man, the fans and the board will quite likely lead to Mourinho leaving the club before too long. Sack Race odds: 5/1 Newcastle United – Rafa Benitez Poor old Rafa. He’s always a gentleman and shouldn’t have to put up with the farcical nonsense that is Mike Ashley. He worked wonders keeping his paper thin side in the Premier League last season and he should have been rewarded with some impressive new recruits. Ashley being Ashley though (Newcastle haven’t broken their transfer record since signing Michael Owen in 2005) means that instead of quality new faces Benitez has been forced to search the bargain bins at Poundland yet again. For all of the above, I personally believe Rafa will be the manager to leave his club first. He won’t be sacked, surely Mike Ashley isn’t that stupid, instead Rafa may well step down. The man is simply too wonderful a coach to put up with the endless idiocy he’s been served up in the North East, and instead he should seek healthier options elsewhere. Sack Race odds: 8/1 Southampton – Mark Hughes I fully ate my words last season, when Hughes took over at Southampton I thought they were doomed, but he actually did a decent job and kept them in the league thanks to a few tidy results. I can’t help but not like Hughes though, maybe it’s his arrogant personality, maybe it’s that he cares way too much about handshakes, who knows. The Welshman’s issue this time round is the lack of new arrivals and the constant question of, where will the goals come from in this Southampton team? Will Charlie Austin be able to stay fit enough to kick it in the net? Wil the loan of Danny Ings be a success? Will Nathan Redmond finally be able to understand that you can run, kick and breathe all at once? Find out on this year’s edition of the Prem. Sack Race odds: 12/1 Tottenham Hotspur – Mauricio Pochettino First things first, Daniel Levy got a taste of his own medicine and completely fluffed this transfer window. After years of squeezing every penny out of teams to get a stellar deal, here’s a comprehensive list of Spurs’ 2018 summer signings: nobody. Pochettino would be safe at Spurs regardless of league position, but this shambolic transfer window means that he will get even more leeway in what is expected to be a disappointing league season following years of success. Plus, with Real Madrid plucking Lopetegui over Pochettino recently too, I don’t see any reason why Poch would depart the new White Hart Lane in the near future. Sack Race odds: 50/1 Watford – Javi Gracia I actually had to Google ‘who is the Watford manager?’ only to be greeted with the completely forgettable answer of Javi Gracia. Outside of a 4-1 win against Chelsea, his run at the helm of the Hornets has had very little sting behind it, which likely will continue through 2018/2019. Without a doubt Gracia will be relying on his defence in order to keep his team up, and salvage his own job. Last season their top scorer was Abdoulaye Doucouré (who I cannot believe wasn’t snapped up) with 7 goals, and their blunted strikeforce consists of a fat guy on £100,000 per week (Deeney), a fat guy with a poor injury history (Okaka) and a skinny guy who’s Premier League goal ratio is 1 in every 4.5 games (Gray). Sack Race odds: 8/1 West Ham – Manuel Pellegrini West Ham live in a constant state of insanity. Their board have consistently lied to the fans about plans, both on the pitch and in terms of the stadium change, leaving many long-time Hammers fans disgruntled with their beloved team. Stability may have arrived in the backroom however, as experienced head Manuel Pellegrini, who must have rocks in his head to take this role, takes to the hot seat at the London Stadium. Pairing such a successful manager with a plethora of exciting signings: Wilshire, Yarmolenko, Anderson, Sanchez and Perez amongst others, means that West Ham should be able to secure an impressive finish this time round. Sack Race odds: 18/1 Wolverhampton Wanderers – Nuno Espírito Santo Rounding off our band of merry men we have another gentleman who may become a victim of his own success. Wolves are back in the big time after six years of absence, and they’ve gone super-size on their transfer dealings, assembling arguably the most luscious squad a promoted side has ever forged. I question whether Nuno as the managerial nous required to cut it in the top division, and considering the fact that Wolves have gone all in this summer, they could end up searching for a more prestigious manager if a fast start escapes them. Fun fact though, Nuno was born in São Tomé and Príncipe, which is cool. Sack Race odds: 18/1 There you have it then folks, the Premier League sack (or leave you club because of gross mismanagement) is on. My front runners have to be Warnock, Mourinho and Benitez, but I’d love to here who’s job you are fearful for this time round.
This is it! Last day of the transfer window, will we buy someone? Sell someone? Everything will be decided in the next few hours.

Who do you think is the next premier league manager to get the sack ?
With only 3 months in so far the premier league has seen 3 managers sacked already Dick Advocaat (Sunderland) , Brendan Rodgers ( Liverpool) and Tim Sherwood ( Aston villa). Who do you reckon is the next manager to get the sack or leave by mutual consent ? Mourinho(chelsea) and McLaren(newcastle) seem to be leading the race among betting sites .
[Game Preview] Week 3 - New York Giants (0-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (1-1)
Philadelphia Eagles (1-1) vs. New York Giants (0-2)
After opening the season with two road games, the Philadelphia Eagles look to go up 2-0 in the division as the New York Giants make the trip down 95 for the home opener at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles are coming off a tough loss to a good Chiefs team where they lost two safeties to hamstring injuries and for the second week in a row had issues running the football and protecting the QB. The Giants are coming off back to back losses where the offense, particularly the offensive line struggled. they will put up a fight to prevent dropping to 0-3 and 0-2 in the division. These two teams always play each other tough, so it should be a good game.
FOX - will broadcast Sunday’s game to a regional audience. Joe Buck will handle the play-by-play duties and Troy Aikman will provide analysis. Erin Andrews will report from the sidelines.
Calling the game on 94WIP and the Eagles Radio Network will be Merrill Reese, the NFL’s longest-tenured play-by-play announcer (41st season). Joining Reese in the radio booth will be former Eagles All-Pro wide receiver Mike Quick, while Howard Eskin will report from the sidelines.

Eagles 24 - Giants 19
The Eagles played spoiler preventing the Giants from winning the NFCE as Malcolm Jenkins had the second two-interception game of his eight-year career, returning one for a touchdown.
December 19, 2010 - Miracle at the New Meadowlands - Video - December 19, 2010. The Eagles and Giants faced off in a crucial divisional game that would pretty much crown the division winner in week 15 of the 2010 season. With just under eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter, the Giants went up 21 points with an Eli Manning Touchdown to TE Kevin Boss in what should have put the game out of reach. The Eagles scored quickly on their next possession as Mike Vick hit Brent Celek on a 65 yard TD catch. On the ensuing kickoff, the Eagles caught the Giants off-guard with an onside kick which they recovered. A couple Vick runs and the Eagles were within a touchdown with over 5 minutes left the play. The Eagles defense came up with a big stop before Vick ran down the field multiple times on broken plays before hitting Maclin in the end zone on a TD pass. The Eagles defense was able to stand strong again forcing a Giants punt with 14 second to play. I will pass it off to Mr. Reese again. “14 seconds to go. 31-31 Matt Dodge to punt. It's a high snap. Gets it away, it's a knuckler. Desean Jackson takes it at 35. Drops it! Picks it up. Looks for running room, he’s at the 40. He’s at the 45. Ohhh 40! Ohhh! He's gonna go. Desean Jackson, I don't care if he jumps, dives. He's running around. He is in the end zone and there's no time. The Eagles Win! The Eagles Win! He ran around til all the zeros were on the clock and the Giants plan can’t believe it. And the Eagles have just pulled off the most remarkable win I have ever seen.” The Eagles went on to win the division before losing to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers in the playoffs.
November 19, 1978 - Miracle in the Meadowlands - Video The Eagles were 6-5 heading into the game. The Giants were 5-6. Both teams desperately needed a victory to stay alive in the postseason race. The Giants took a commanding 14-0 lead and led 17-12 with just 31 seconds to play on a 3rd and 2. The previous play Eagles linebacker Bill Bergey had charged into center Jim Clack, knocking him backwards into quarterback Joe Pisarcik. The because of this the Giants didn't want to risk kneeling the ball again and causing injury to their quarterback. Offensive coordinator Bob Gibson instead called for a running play, much to the displeasure of running back Larry Csonka, who begged Pisarcik to not give him the ball. As Pisarcik called the snap, he was distracted and bobbled the ball before it bounced off Csonka's hip and hit the ground. Eagles’ defensive coordinator Marion Campbell had called an all-out 11-man blitz on the play which put cornerback Herman Edwards was in position to scoop up the football on one bounce and dash 26 yards for the game-winning touchdown. And the play vaulted the Eagles into the postseason for the first time in 18 years, while the Giants finished last in the division.
October 10th 2003 Miracle at the Meadowlands II - Video - Eagles QB Donovan McNabb was having one of the worst games of his professional career. He completed nine of 23 passes for 64 yards and an interception. To be fair he was suffering from a broken right thumb for the first few weeks of the 2003 season. The Eagles were 2-3 and saw their season slipping away and while 2-4 wouldn’t eliminate them from the playoffs it would put them in a big hole. With 1:30 to play, the Eagles trailed by 10-7 with the Giants setting up to punt. Rookie running back and return man Brian Westbrook fielded the punt on one bounce. I'll let Merrill Reese tell the rest of the story. "He gets it away, it's a wobbler. Bounces across the 20. Westbrook takes it, looks for running room. Up to the 25, the 30, to the 35, 40. 45, midfield. 45, 40. 35, 30. Brian Westbrook! He's going, he's gone! Touchdown! Brian Westbrook 84 yards! I don't believe it! Brian Westbrook has just exploded. This place is in a state of shock!" The Eagles won the game 14-10 and improved to 3-3 for the season. They won eight more games in a row, ending the season with home-field advantage in the NFC playoffs. Their season ended with a loss to the Carolina Panthers in the NFC title game. Westbrook's punt return helped save the season for the Eagles in 2003.
November 20, 1960 - The Hit - The Eagles were playing the defending Eastern Conference champion Giants. Entering the game at Giants Stadium, the Eagles were 6-1, the Giants 5-1-1. The winner would have the inside track to the championship game. The Eagles were leading 17-10, but the Giants were driving to tie the score. Charlie Connerly threw a short pass to halfback Frank Gifford, who hauled it in and turned to run upfield. But just as he turned, Chuck Bednarik leveled him with what has been called "The Hit." The Eagles recovered the fumble, won the important game and went on to win the NFC Championship.
January 11, 2009- Closing down the Meadowlands – Video - The Eagles had managed to slip into the playoffs with a wild-card spot. They had won the wild-card game and now had to play the defending Super Bowl Champion Giants divisional round. It was bitter cold for the game and the Eagles' defense dominated throughout. The Giants only managed three field goals and a safety. The Eagles won 23-11. As the Giants fans left early to escape the bitter cold, we Eagle fans hung around and kept singing Fly Eagles Fly until they got hoarse.
November 20,1988. - Video The teams were competing for the NFC East title. In a tightly contested contest at Giants Stadium, Randall Cunningham brought the Eagles back to tie the game at 17-17 and send it into overtime. The Eagles drove down the field in overtime and were lining up to kick the winning field goal. But Luis Zendejas' kick was blocked. He picked up the ball and lateraled it to lineman Clyde Simmons, who ran it in for the winning score. While the teams finished with the same record, since the Eagles swept the two games with the Giants, they won the NFC East.
Recap from Last Week’s Games.
Eagles - Video - Carson Wentz was 25-46 for 333 yards and two touchdowns and an INT in the 27-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Eagles OL struggled all day to open up holes for the running backs and to protect the Wentz. The Eagles defense held the high powered Chiefs offense in check most the day despite losing both Rodney McLeod and Jaylen Watkins to hamstring injuries. A late INT on a tipped pass put the Chiefs in excellent field position late in the game allowing them to go ahead by two scores. The Eagles were able to add a late TD and were in position for a late Hail Mary to tie the game, but the pass was batted down in the endzone and the Chiefs held on for the win.
Giants - Video - For the second week in a row Eli Manning and the Giants offensive line struggled causing the Giants offense to sputter. Odell Beckham Jr. was activated for this first game since injuring his ankle in the preseason, but it looked like he was still nursing the injury as he was brought back into the fold slowly only catching 4 passes for 36 yards. On defense the Giants front seven look stout on the night, but Eli Apple had troubles with Lions WR Marvin Jones and the Giants feel to 0-2 and the bottom of the NFCE with a 24-10 loss.

Philadelphia has produced 20+ points in six consecutive contests dating back to Week 14 in 2016, which is the 3rd longest active streak in the NFL, trailing only Pittsburgh (ten), Atlanta (eight).
The Eagles rank 2nd in the NFL in third-down conversions (55.2%), trailing only Denver (56.7%). Philadelphia has converted at least 50.0% of its third-down attempts in back to-back games for the first time since 12/13/15-12/20/15
The Eagles lead the NFL in lowest percentage of three and-out drives (8.7%) (2 in 23 offensive series)
Since 1950, only four Eagles QBs have thrown for 300+ yards and 2+ TDs in each of the first two games of the season: Wentz (2017), Donovan McNabb (2006), Randall Cunningham (1994) and Ron Jaworski (1982)
Ertz has recorded 90+ receiving yards in three straight games (dating back to Week 17 in 2016), which is the longest active streak in the NFL. The last Eagle to produce 90+ receiving yards in three-or-more consecutive games was Terrell Owens (five games) in 2004
Philadelphia ranks 5th in the NFL in total yards per game (381.0), trailing only New England (463.0), Kansas City (440.5), New Orleans (386.5) and Oakland (384.5)
Philadelphia ranks 2nd in the NFL in yardage differential per game (77.0), trailing only Denver (92.0)

Numbers That Matter Ereck Flowers has struggled to protect the QB this season. His pass block efficiency is of 92.9 means he allows 1 pressure every 15 offensive snaps. He will be tested early and often again an Eagles front seven that put up 4 sacks in each of their first two games (8 total and tied for 4th in the NFL)against much more talented offensive lines. If Flowers doesn't step up his game it could be a long day for Eli Manning.

The Giants safeties have only giving up 4 receptions through 4 games, which looks great until you notice that they were only targeted a combined 5 times and one of the receptions was a TD. The Giants will tested early and often as Carson Wentz's favorite target this season has been TE Zach Ertz who has 13 receptions for 190 yards including 10 receptions +10 yards.

The Eagles have struggled to run the football the first two weeks of the season and it won't get any easier against the Giants who boast two of the best run stopping interior linemen. Dalvin Tomlinson is ranked 6th and Damon Harrison is ranked 19th in run stopping with the two combining for 9 run stops.

Matchups to Watch
Eagles Secondary vs. Giants Receivers
I wanted to mention the obvious matchup between the Eagles defensive front vs the Giants offensive "line" but that really isn't necessary given their incompetence up front. Side note, there should be emphasis on offensive when talking about the Giants line; it is an insult to quality play. Anyway, we can talk all day about that obvious match up but it would eventually turn into erotic fan fiction. The Eagles will pressure Eli and hit him all day. It's really unavoidable. What we need to watch is the Eagles banged up secondary vs the Giants receivers. The Giants have an obvious stud in OBJ, whose entrance music "Diva" by Beyonce is well-known. The Giants also have versatile slot receiver Sterling Shepard (a 2016 draft favorite of mine), Brandon Marshall, and glorified TE Evan Engram. The Giants offense is off to a horrific start this season after having a poor season last year despite OBJ being healthy, but that doesn't make this unit any less explosive. There is big play ability in spades with this group and it is up to the Eagles secondary to keep it in check. The Eagles have a fantastic Safety pairing that likely won't be available with McLeod's hamstring injury, potentially leaving the Eagle vulnerable in the back end considering his back up (Corey Graham) has been nursing a hamstring injury as well. Additionally, the Eagles are down to their 3rd CB early in the season, rookie Rasul Douglas. Douglas played very well against a tough Chiefs offense last week, especially considering it was his first NFL action. The challenge this week isn't any easier despite the sack-friendly Giants offensive line. If Eli can find a rhythm, the Giants have the weapons to make plays. The Eagles secondary has performed better than last year to date but is still young and raw while sustaining early injuries (Watkins and Darby). The secondary must play disciplined football to allow the defensive front to have a party in the backfield.
Giants defensive front vs. the Eagles offensive line
The Eagles offensive line hasn't gotten off to a great start, especially considering the lofty expectations for the group. Two weeks into the season the Eagles will likely bench their new LG Isaac Seumalo for Chance Warmack, former first round pick of the Titans in 2013. Seumalo "Ereck Flowers'd" his way to the bench after getting absolutely worked against the Chiefs last week allowing at least 3 sacks (or 4 depending on who you ask) while looking lost in the run game. It has been a very disappointing start for the second year player out of Oregon State University, especially considering the Eagles traded former starter Allen Barbre away earlier in the summer. Seumalo played well last year, especially in the passing game, which gave the coaches confidence when projecting his future growth. He is still a very young player so hope shouldn't be lost, but the Eagles really had to do something about the LG position before it was too late. Enter Chance Warmack, who is a bit of a disappointment in his own right. Warmack had 48 starts in his time with the Titans and was largely inconsistent, especially in the passing game, and live up to the expectations of a high first round pick. This summer, Warmack showed he is still the mauling blocker in the run game while looking at least serviceable as a pass blocker. At the very least, Warmack should show more in the run game, but his overall body of work should keep Eagles fans cautious about his potential. The talent is there, it always has been, but sometimes having the talent isn't enough. Hopefully the reunion of with his college offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland can unlock that talent that made him a first round pick. The Giants have an excellent defensive line that has given the league fits in its last 18 games. There is a reason why the Giants haven't been completely blown out, and that is because their defense has allowed less than 19 points per game on average their last 18 games. For the Giants, it starts up front, with versatile edge rushers Olivier Vernon and Jason Pierre-Paul. Both rushers are great in their own right but together they form a dynamic duo that allows Steve Spagnuolu to be very creative with his defensive packages. Additionally, Damon Harrison is one of the premier interior defenders in football. While not a sack machine, Snacks feasts on stuffing interior rushing lanes while providing valuable push up the middle. Rookie Dalvin Tomlinson out of Alabama has provided a nice compliment to Snacks, eating up blockers and crashing rushing lanes; he isn't a slouch in his own right. The Giants also have rangy linebackers who make a lot of plays in the run game. The Eagles offensive line has been decent in pass protection but horrible in run blocking. For a unit that needs to gel and execute more consistently, this is a very difficult match up to take on.
Zach Ertz vs. the Giants defense
While the Giants have a great defense, one area where they continue to struggle mightily is covering tight ends. The Giants get a good amount of production out of their line-backing group but they have consistently struggled against pass catching TEs. Enter Zach Ertz, who will always be ripped for inability to break tackles despite his production. In his last 11 games, dating back to last season, Ertz has averaged 6.9 receptions and 77.7 yards per game. Since the beginning of last season, Ertz is second only to Travis Kelce in receptions among tight ends, and has been one of the league leaders in receptions across the league the last 11 games regardless of position. The Giants have a dynamic secondary. Even if they don't have Janoris Jenkins available for this matchup, it is still a good unit. Zach Ertz has been feasting with Wentz and that trend could continue with an improved Eagles passing attack.
Andy Reid Light vs. Creepy Ice Cream Truck Driver
In my opinion, Doug Pederson and Ben McAdoo will be oddly intertwined with each other throughout their tenures as head coaches for their respective teams. After all, many reports suggested Doug Pederson wasn't even the Eagles second option in their coaching search post-Chip Kelly. The Eagles had the hots for Adam Gase, but Miami wouldn't let him leave after his visit. Then the Eagles were reportedly looking to bring McAdoo back into the building for a second interview before the Giants swooped back in and hired him as head coach. This doesn't make Doug Pederson a flawed coach; for all we know Pederson could end up being a great choice. But given they ended up in the same division, both will be compared to each other for some time. With that said, the game plans from these two coaches will be interesting given their match ups. Much has been said about Pederson and the run game, but looking back at the Chiefs game, the lack of running wasn't the reason for the loss. Sure, there has to be a better balance between the run and pass, but the scheme and play designs did a hell of a job against a tough defense - the team had too many self-inflicted wounds. The Eagles offense has another tough match up this week vs Steve Spagnuolo and the Giants defense. Spags has talent at all 3 levels to run a lot of different packages from similar looks. How the Eagles attack the Giants defense will go a long way to winning this game. Similarly, McAdoo's offense hasn't done much to get the ground game going, personnel notwithstanding. Even with the weapons the Giants have at receiver, they were still an incredibly mediocre offense last season that often won in spite of itself. Schwartz has the Eagles defense firing on all cylinders with a deep stable of pass rushers that can wreck any game plan. Can McAdoo adjust or even find a way to adjust his sputter offense to get a win? Eli is getting older and many question if he still has the ability elevate the team on his back, can he do it one more season? Many of the same weaknesses that have plague the Giants offense the last few years have either remained or gotten worse. Can the Giants coaches find ways to rectify those issues or will they throw their hat in the Darnold lottery? It's very tough spot for a team trying to avoid the long odds of a 0-3 start.
Tottenham Hotspur and the Season That Could've Been
Hey everyone! I wrote this article on our season for a football website in the works of which I'm going to be the official Spurs blogger! I'm a journalism student so this is something I really enjoy doing! I just wanted to know what you guys thought about the analysis in this piece, and I figured it would be a good point of discussion. Here it is: Tottenham Hotspur and the Season That Could’ve Been As the Premier League season winds down there are four teams fighting for the final Champions League spot, but the average fan of English football would claim that only two of those teams have a chance. Arsenal currently sit in fourth, only one point ahead of Everton who also have a game in hand on the Gunners. Tottenham sit in sixth, five points behind their North London rivals. And Manchester United, fresh off a valiant effort in Munich, sit in seventh and are seven points behind Arsenal. At the beginning of the season one would’ve been hard pressed to find somebody, outside of Liverpool, who thought Everton would have a chance to qualify in the top 4 over Arsenal, United, and Tottenham. And yet here we are. Momentum is on Everton’s side as they defeated Arsenal 3-0 last week, but the Toffees still have to face both Manchester teams. Arsenal have an easier road ahead, but the Gunners still have the FA Cup to worry about. They face Wigan this Saturday in an effort to reach the final and win a trophy for the first time in over eight years. With the Gunners horrendous recent form and looming FA Cup distraction, it’s not crazy to think Arsenal will drop more points. The race for fourth is far from over for Everton and Arsenal, but people are quick to dismiss Tottenham’s chances at stealing a Champions League spot. Realistically, it’s a long shot. Spurs face West Brom, Fulham, Stoke, West Ham, and Aston Villa the rest of the way. Anything less than three points from each of these games will not be enough. Even if Spurs win out, they will need Everton and Arsenal to drop points more than once. If I were a betting man I’d bet on Spurs to be back in the Europa League next year, but anyone who follows this league knows that anything can happen. It’s a shame for Spurs fans, this season could have brought so much more. Expectations were sky high when Tottenham sold Gareth Bale and replaced him with seven new players. Andre Villas-Boas was tasked with gelling the players and producing an attacking brand of football. Spurs struggled to score goals from the start, and after losing 6-0 at Manchester City, 3-0 at home to West Ham, and 5-0 at home to Liverpool, AVB got the sack. Tim Sherwood took over as manager, but he didn’t change much. Sherwood continued playing AVB’s suicidally high-line, even against the league’s most formidable attacking sides. The one change Sherwood did make was the re-introduction of Emmanuel Adebayor to the senior team. Adebayor only had one appearance under AVB, but under Sherwood he has 10 goals in 15 games. Adebayor and Christian Eriksen have carried Spurs at times this season. Without these players, and without Hugo Lloris in net, I can’t even imagine where Tottenham would be right now. Another common theme for Spurs this season has been their repeated tendency to shoot themselves in the foot. Tottenham have made more errors leading to goals, 18, than any other team in the Premier League this season, according to Opta. Their latest error came this past week when Vlad Chiriches’ wayward pass was picked up by Sunderland’s Lee Cattermole who fired past a scrambling Lloris from outside the box. Spurs bounced back and ended up winning 5-1, so this mistake was not that glaring. But other embarrassing mistakes have cost Tottenham opportunities to take points from the current Top 4. On March 8th Spurs lost 4-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, but the game was scoreless at halftime. Spurs arguably had more of the first half, as Sandro registered the only shot on target of the first period. They were right with Chelsea until Jan Vertonghen’s costly 56th minute mistake. Vertonghen slipped and played the ball backwards right into the path of Samuel Eto’o. Eto’o was always going to score after an assist like that, but he still ran to the corner flag to celebrate, and he surprisingly didn’t fall over when his teammates patted him on the back. A few minutes later Eto’o took a dive when Younes Kaboul put pressure on him in the box. Eden Hazard converted the penalty and Chelsea were on for the rout. Kaboul’s red card was rescinded early the next week. There is no question Spurs had little chance of beating Chelsea on that day. They had a chance to snatch a point, but the loss symbolized much of what Tottenham’s season has been about. Spurs were competitive, albeit wasteful, until a terrible error handed the opposition a goal. They also were incredibly unlucky to be the victims of a wrongful sending off. Kaboul didn’t deserve red, and neither did Danny Rose when he was sent off for a great tackle on Manchester City’s Eden Dzeko in January. Rose’s red card brought on the whooping from City, but it was also rescinded the next week. At some point or another, every team has bad decisions go against them. Tottenham were unfortunate enough to be victimized by two of those bad calls, against two of England’s biggest clubs, in two of Spurs’ most important games of the season. Even with the bad calls, Tottenham capitulated too often and missed too many chances. Who knows where we would be if Spurs had bounced back, from early goals, to earn a tie in either match against Liverpool. Who knows where we would be if Spurs hadn’t failed to score in losses to Arsenal, West Ham, Newcastle, Arsenal again, and freaking Norwich City! Who knows how many of these poor results were because of incompetent coaching? All I know is; had Tottenham been a little luckier and not shot themselves in the foot repeatedly, they could have brought the Champions League back to the first club of North London.
Time to say goodbye on the blog now as we transfer our focus to the Monday Night Football action! See you all again in the morning. 17:12

‘WE NEEDED EXPERIENCE’
Former Carlisle boss Keith Curle’s experience was the key reason in Northampton’s decision to appoint him. Northampton are fourth bottom in Sky Bet League Two after just one win and five losses from their first 10 games, including three defeats in their last four. "In the position we are in we think we needed a manager with a lot of experience of League 2 and Keith has that," said Chairman Kelvin Thomas. "He has managed around 400 games at this level and we think he is exactly who we need right now. He took over at Carlisle United in similar circumstances and did an excellent job, not only steering them out of trouble but developing a squad that was able to challenge for promotion in the following seasons.” 14:45

‘I’LL NEVER MANAGE BARCA’
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is plotting Barcelona's downfall safe in the knowledge he will never manage the Spanish giants. Pochettino is relishing the prospect of tackling Ernesto Valverde's side in Wednesday's Champions League group stage match at Wembley. But he knows his past precludes him from ever taking charge at the Nou Camp, given he has been both a player and manager at rivals Espanyol. He said: "It is more than understood [that I will never take over]. My path and that of Barcelona are different, opposite directions. Coaching there would be impossible." 14:17

BARCA CHIEF RESPONDS TO POGBA RUMOURS
Barcelona chief Josep Maria Bartomeu has refused to rule out a move for Paul Pogba. Barcelona are currently unwilling to pay over £100m, but Manchester United value the player at double that. Asked about a potential January bid, Bartomeu told the Times: "I read these rumours - not just Pogba but a lot of players. Most of the teams don't want to sell their players. They want to grow. "When you hear from agents that a certain player is on the market - and I am not saying that about this player, but generally - I will sometimes call the CEO and say 'Is it true you want to sell this player?'. Usually they say 'No way, not for sale' and that's the end of it." 12:44
NORTHAMPTON MANAGER UPDATE
Sky Sports News understands Northampton wish to appoint a new manager as quickly as possible, with ex-Carlisle boss Keith Curle currently the bookies favourite. Ex-Blackpool manager Gary Bowyer and Kevin Nolan, who was last in charge at Notts County, are also short in the odds after the Cobblers sacked Dean Austin on Sunday following a 4-0 thrashing at Mansfield on Saturday. Northampton are fourth-bottom of the bottom tier after one win and five defeats from their first 10 games, including three defeats in their last four. 12:07
AKINFEEV RETIRES FROM RUSSIA DUTY
Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev is retiring from international football after leading the national side as captain to this year's World Cup quarter-finals on home soil. The 32-year-old CSKA Moscow player's acrobatic penalty saves captivated home crowds and helped Russia to their best tournament finish since the collapse of the Soviet Union. "There is a beginning and an end to every story," Akinfeev was quoted as saying on CSKA's website. "My story with the national team has also reached its logical end." 11:36
ASHLEY: SHOW ME THE MONEY
On Saturday, Ashley watched Newcastle play at home for the first time in 16 months. He was abused by large sections of the crowd as Newcastle lost 2-0 to Leicester City. Ashley has now watched two games in a row. His attendance at games is part of a strategy being driven by chief executive Lee Charnley to build bridges with fan, players and manager Rafael Benitez. In another conciliatory move, Ashley is planning to take Benitez and his players to dinner this week. He wants to get everyone together to clear the air and address the problems at the club and demonstrate his support and commitment. One source told us that until Kenyon makes an offer, it is a case of “a man with no money wanting to buy a football club”. 11:34
NEWCASTLE TAKEOVER UPDATE
Mike Ashley’s challenge to anyone who wants to buy Newcastle United is to show him the money. The Newcastle owner and his representatives have never publicly named their price for the club, but it is understood it is unlikely to be sold for less than £300m. It is also our understanding that aside from purchasing the club prospective buyers must also prove they have the funds to take the club forward. Former Manchester United and Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon is trying to put together a deal to buy Newcastle. With clubs such as Manchester United valued at more than £3bn, the onus is on any prospective buyer to make their best offer. 10:52
MARADONA: MESSI SHOULD RETIRE
Argentina legend Diego Maradona has told Lionel Messi that he should retire from international football once again. Messi's future with his national side is uncertain with the Barcelona forward opting to take a break following a below-par World Cup campaign. What would I tell Messi? To not come back any more. To retire,' the current coach of Mexican outfit Dorados told C larin on Sunday. "The Under 15s lose and it is Messi's fault, the fixture list in Argentina puts Racing against Boca and Messi is to blame. He is always to blame. "I would tell him: 'Don't go anymore, man'. Let's see if they can handle that. Let's see if they're really big men." 10:20
