Why Doesn’t Rockstar Care ( Anymore ) ?
I have been a fan of the Red Dead Redemption franchise since the title game released when I was eleven. My older cousin had the game on his Xbox, and I would play whenever my parents weren’t around ( it was a ‘boy’s game,’ you see ). But when I was fifteen, I was given my own Xbox 360 for Christmas and finally allowed to play whatever games I wanted, regardless of who they were ‘made for.’ I immersed myself into this world of cowboys, of outlaws, I wrestled with that fine line between right and wrong. I fell in love with the story, and was dying to know more about John Marston and his past. Fast forward to the release of Red Dead Redemption 2. I can not explain to you how thrilled I was that it had finally come, that we could finally delve into the old west once more, learn more about the story and the lore. I didn’t expect to like it as much as the first one. Sequels aren’t usually as good as the originals, right? Well in this case, I was wrong. To my complete shock, I came to love RDR2 even more than the first game. This new anti-hero, this new brooding, mysterious cowboy, Arthur Morgan, made me feel stronger for any fictional character than I ever had in the past. He felt so real to me, and he still does. It was clear to me just how much work the game developers had put into this masterpiece of a game. And perhaps, not all of that work ethically or fairly. But it was a masterpiece all the same, and i was excited to try out Red Dead Online for the first time, like many of us were. As we all know, the initial launch of RDO was... rough, to put it lightly. Game crashes, broken servers, glitches, as well as not nearly enough content. It seemed so messy... but it was an online game, a newborn one at that, so we forgave and moved on! Rockstar would fix things up and make it better, right? Right... ? Sure, things got a little better. They fixed ( some ) of the bugs, added ( some ) new content, smoothed over ( some ) of the issues. Left us all excited and eager, wanting more, dying to know what came next. And then... nothing. Rockstar seemed to take the Red Dead franchise ( including the single player mode, as most open world games would have DLC by now ) and set it at the back of a dusty shelf, tucked away behind much shinier, cleaner, brighter things like GTA V and all of its updates. And at first, we kept waiting. ‘They must be working on something really big!’ ‘Just be patient; it took them eight years to make the single player game, I bet the next update will be mind-blowing.’ We tried, we really tried to keep our hopes up! But weeks, /months/ went by with absolutely nothing. Not a word out of Rockstar, no new content. The bugs were getting worse and worse, and because of said bugs, some of the only content the game did have, like the Trader Role, were becoming obsolete, unplayable. We started to get angry. And in my opinion, rightfully so. We gave them so much time, so many chances to explain themselves. We brushed it off as COVID19 screwing things up... even though the absence from Rockstar began before COVID19 hit America. We kept trying to tell ourselves that they MUST be working on something spectacular for it to take this long and be so secretive. But time went on and on with nothing. Other games were getting updates, DLC, brand new games even being released in the midst of the chaos of 2020. So where was Rockstar? What was their excuse? The Naturalist Role. Perhaps the most controversial update so far. Seven months of silence... for one role? Seven months of silence, for a role most players will never use. And for 25 gold? Newer players don’t even get to use the role right away unless they fork out some real money for Rockstar. ‘Here you go, Rockstar, as a reward for you giving us nothing at all for over half a year, here’s my fifteen year old’s birthday money!’ The Naturalist Role isn’t terrible. As an animal lover, I enjoy the much more pacifist role, being able to ‘appreciate’ wildlife and take things a little slower, a little simpler. Harriet is an interesting, eccentric character who I find very entertaining. The new horses are stunning... although their stats are painfully low. The role just feels incredibly lack luster. It wouldn’t have been such a let down if there had been /more/. Maybe a counter-role, like the option to work with Gus instead of Harriet. Or a new role entirely, unrelated to animals, like one of the many roles the community has been talking about and asking for. Just /more!/ More than one pacifist, expensive, grind-y role that many players will never use. If Rockstar ever makes some excuse about running out of ideas... well, then we’ll know they don’t hear us at all. The community has discussed so many incredible ideas both for single player DLC and online updates. Feasible ideas, too. I’ve been thinking a lot about the ‘why’ of it all. Why doesn’t Rockstar seem to care about Red Dead Redemption anymore? They clearly did at one point... or RDR2 would never have come out and wouldn’t be as extensive and meaningful as it is. Did they perhaps underestimate how seriously fans would take the game? Did they put so much work into the initial release that in their minds, its ‘enough?’ No need for DLC, no need for exciting online play, just be grateful for the single-player mode that we spent eight years on. In my opinion, Red Dead Online is a cash grab for Rockstar. Think about the vast differences in RDO and GTAO. In GTA, you can keep almost any stolen car, including some nicer ones. But in RDO, you cant keep any wild or stolen horses. Not even the crappy ones like Morgans or Kentucky Saddlers. In GTA, Rockstar gives out generous sign-in bonuses, giveaways, etc. In RDO, you’re lucky if you get a 40% off a saddle coupon. In GTA, it’s so easy to make money. Whether it’s through missions or challenges, it’s fairly simple to bank up enough cash for a nice new car or apartment. But in RDO, making money, both cash or gold, is painfully slow, especially for new players. RDO is perhaps the most difficult game for new players/lower level players to get by in. The only real way to be successful without it taking /hours/ and hours of grinding and being griefed is to spend real money on the game. And a lot of people can’t afford to do that. Whether they’re just kids with no income, young adults living paycheck to paycheck, or any other number of situations. Not to mention how many people lost their jobs due to the pandemic—myself included. A game that should and could be an escape, an immersive western experience to forget about real world struggles for a while and just be an outlaw, feels more like an exclusive club run by elitists, and the only way to get in is to pay cash. Red Dead Online has the potential to be an incredible gaming experience. And yes, it does have its perks, does have things going for it. But it feels cheap and forgotten, while the prize child GTA gets all the shiny new gifts and polishes. Everyone has their own opinions on the situation and the franchise in general. And everyone’s opinions are valid and have merit. But I think one thing we can all agree on, is this feeling of being forgotten and shoved aside. And in my opinion, it’s just not fair. But as we all know: “Ain’t nothing fair. You know that.”
This may come off as another bitch-post and maybe it is, but were in lock-down and the only responsible thing to do now is obsess over the game that I think has the most wasted potential of it’s generation.
So, here comes a wall-of-words with the intent of proposing additions, patches and adjustments in gameplay/ menu mechanics and general quality of life fixes that I hope come to this game either in this generation or the next. I’ll keep the common complaints short and place them at the end, but I will list them b/c this game has too much potential to still be saddled with day one bugs so far down the road.
Yes, I will be submitting this through the website where Rockstar ignores it’s customers.
Now my proposals on how to improve the quality of life, engagement and fun-factor. Credit to u/mannishman11 who posted a list of suggestions on this subreddit that I’ll be taking some ideas from and building upon.
**The hope**
The riverboat update/expansion: Exactly what it sounds like. Use the template of one of the current riverboats or create a new “megaboat”. It’d be a place to congregate within a lobby but also house all games available in free roam in one convenient location (main deck), high stakes, no limits poker (top deck) and in the boiler room there’d be a fight club. No killing but you can be dazed and no tonics (rest/spectate to recover at an accelerated rate).
This should be a hedonistic playground for the high levels. Somewhere for them to congregate, flex just a little bit and finally something to spend their money on (and risk losing it all if they end up on the wrong side of lady luck.
You’d access the riverboat from the St. Denis docks for a $100 entrance fee for each time you travel to it. and it’d have a dress code (not in love with that idea, but I like the idea of forcing players to dress up/not all look like bruised and battered heathens all the time lol).
so you got too much money and nothing to spend it on, huh? how about you come on down to St. Dennis and risk it all (no limit games restricted to player vs player / no player vs cpu).
Newsboy/telegram (In lobby mass message | mannish elaboration) Free roam is far too isolated and those looking for potential posse members /new friends/or players just looking for a fist fight have no option other than to use bullets and rudimentary emotes (or their guns/fists) to make their intent clear. And that’s only if you happen to cross another player on the massive map. This can be solved by introducing the newsboy into RDO or Implementing a “telegram” service at the post offices.
How it’d work: Travel to a newsboy or post office>interact with PO or NB by using L2 (I’ll be speaking in PS4)>add the option to write a message to the lobby by pressing square while focused on the PO or NB and then write a message or provide a button propped list of options to blast out (posse up anyone? Bounty hunt? Duel? etc.
Everyone in that lobby would get a prompt that there is a message from a fellow player at the post office/at camp, if they choose to travel to and read the message they can accept or ignore. If they were to accept (provided by button prompts) they’d be spawned next to the inviting player and now you can interact with a like-minded player in your lobby without having to “soft-grief” to invite a player to a fight or just be alone if you happen to want to play with friends/others but none are on when you are.
You get 3 lobby message per lobby session and this'd need to be monitored by R* to prevent spamming/soliciting
DUEL (mannish tweak) This is cowboy 101 and I’m disappointed that there is no variant of a duel in RDO atm, so let’s fix that!
approach a player > focus on that player with L2 > add the option to challenge to a duel by pressing square> if they accept then that brings up a menu prompt and after long-pressing start you are brought to the duel menu.
variants: classic: opposing ends duel (possibly with the single player mechanics adapted to RDO).
Paces: Start back to back and take 10 paces in either direction. Your camera will be in a “cinematic state” (A high angle shot that slowly zooms in on you until the count of ten has been reached. At that point your camera whips around to face the opponent and you attack and react. Those that employ quickdraw should have a massive advantage over those who try to use the standard autolock. Also, maybe add some effects to the “paces” tighten the tension and show your players nervousness
1 shot: classic opposing ends duel, but with only one bullet in each players side arm of choice. You take your shot on the mark and if you don’t win with the gun then it’s down to blades and fists.
There could also be auto prompts/telegrams to go out to the lobby when a duel had been agreed to to allow the other players to migrate to the area and spectate and possibly bet if they choose. There would have to be a safe area applied to the area to cut down on griefers. Players can fight each other while waiting in queue. All combat is cancelled for any spectators who may be onlooking once the duel is underway. The winner of a duel will have the opportunity to either leave or take on any challengers if they choose to do so.
MELEE (cannot possibly happen in the immediate because of the assumed need for additional motion cap.) I’ve been playing this game too god damn long and I’m sick of shooting everything when this game has the foundation for so much more. I can’t find it now, but there was a post not too long ago showing some of the advanced melee (machete) fighting that had been scripted into the single player (that I’d honestly forgotten about). I feel like that’d be too much to ask, as the world is now, but eventually id like for melee to be elaborated on to come close to what could be.
Some of the most fun I’ve had is when free aim was first introduced to the showdown modes and I’d be able to dodge bullets in the wind while charging the either panicking or retreating opponent. Choosing to bring a knife to a gunfight and killing your opponent is something I want to experience more and I think others would as well.
But the variety dries up quickly. melee controls should be refined so that the player can better dictate if they want to tackle or attempt a standing attack while charging at an enemy.
obviously we'd need more tackle animations and more tackle counter animations and of course more creative executions.
Also the melee ability cards need to be buffed. If I run with of single purpose, Iron Lung and fool me once I should be tanky, especially if all of those cards are fully upgraded. I don’t want the advantage over shooters, I just want it to be viable to run a melee build if you play smartly (use cover and invest in abilities). As it is now there is an entire set of melee based ability cards that go unused for the most part.
Slippery bastard/ Return of the bastard This card needs to be “re-buffed” to it’s original strength/effect with one caveat: it has a 10 second “afterburn” where, as the slippery bastard user, once you exit your deadeye state your enemy can immediately return to auto aiming, but you will still be free aim only for the next 10 seconds. I feel like that is a far better compromise than what they’ve currently done to SB.
Also, You should be unpaintable in SB.
I always looked at it as a way o make a melee build workable and an invitation to free aim kill me if you are so intent on killing me. You used to be able to sense the panic when an opponent had the crutch of auto aim swept from under their feet. That should be a thing again.
Racing/unleash the horses The race series has become my guilty pleasure just in the last month. I’m addicted and I want more! In case you weren’taware there is a strong community in the race series where the appeal is mostly respect and chasing the win. I know this because I’ve won enough races to know that no one is there for the money.
In the here and now: I’d like to see more race styles: Long distance/marathon style point to point (like the Van horn to black water run from single player), team relay lap races, cart/chariot races in either solo or duos (one driver, one shootecombatant) and traditional races with no weapon spawns, just pure skill and knowledge of the maps with a little pushing and shoving and perhaps a machete or two along the way.
Also, and I hope this isn’t controversial because I’ve always found it silly. Don’t normalize the horses! We paid for and saddled up the horses we want and come to know and love them for how they handle in free roam. It takes the spit out of a race to have rubber band physics bring the pack back into the race when you’d left them behind fair and square.
If you come out with a war horse then know that you are not going to win by racing clean so be a bully and use the mass and strength of your horse as a weapon to at least try and neutralize the faster horses. Alternatively if you're out there with an Arabian then you should do everything you can to avoid contact and get to wide open spaces to let your speed do the work. This would need a reworking of the race collision detection(which is needed anyway), but Id like the strategy that this would introduce and more importantly my fast horse will also feel fast while in a race, hopefully.
If you come out with a saddler or a Shire you’re not winning. And that’s ok because you signed up for a race and you brought a slug as your steed (though stricter matchmaking can solve the disparity between the OG’s and new-comers).
Finally, I dream of a race that takes you from one side of mount Shan and ends on the other side of it after racing and working around the cliffs and ledges near the peak of the mountain; would also love courses in, Tall trees, NE new Hanover, and the heartlands.
Bandits (expansion/role | Mannish tweak) Banks, passenger trains, stores, and civilians are now fair game The mechanics would work similar or exactly as in single player.
I imagine there’d be free roam events and “search and shoot” missions that surround this role, but those are basic and not worth my time. I’d much rather talk about my idea for “who runs this town”:
If you, as a bandit or a bandit posse, survive enough npc police and maybe 3 rounds of bounty hunters then you should trigger a mode where bounty hunters can keep coming but now licensed bounty hunter players will now be alerted that you’ve taken over a town and those bounty hunter characters should be given the option to join the fight to liberate the town from the agitating posse or ignore it.
While under their control the person or posse will steadily collect money from the local shops. That money is theirs after a certain amount of time has elapsed. Or if you’re able to liberate the town then you collect the cash.
So if you think you’re a badass and want to try and liberate a town by yourself you can try, ditto for if you’re able to rustle up a posse. That town becomes unavailable to take over after 1 “seige” if you are in a posse that took over a town then that counts for your one chance for the day (possibly more limitations to prevent spamming).
Bounty hunters NPC bounty hunters are a drag in RDO. I personally try to nurse a healthy bounty so that real bounty hunters have a chance to come and get me. I don’t want to fight a small army of NPC’s, especially at the ridiculous rate that they keep coming after you. If I wanted to do that I could just start killing cops in St. Dennis.
My solution: every bounty is collectable by any license holding bounty hunter (so basically anyone. This could also be implemented in a way by a toggle option to “deny npc bounty hunters”. A player with a bounty on their head would glow red and their bounty would be displayed over their head (above their gamer tag). I imagine this'd create a ton of tension the next time you cross paths with a fellow player who seems to be staring a bit too hard at you and your $25 bounty.
Either that or give me the ability to evade the NPC bounty hunters as I can do in single player.
Also, bounty hunters should only get their reward if they’re able to bring in the target alive.
There’s nothing more anti-climatic than getting the notification that you’re being hunted after carefully growing your bounty only to have the chase end with an explosive round. No killing, but the target should be able to be downed (with their health returning slowly over time so they have a chance to slip the hogtie and make a run for it). This keeps the "fight for the bounty" alive longer and ups the competition factor.
Horse rustling/breaking (role ?) Intended mainly to give wild horses a reason to exist and part of the larger “bandit overhaul”. Wild horses can now be sold at the stables after a successful breaking in. They can also be saddled, but no wild horse should have better stats than the breed horses for sale at the stable (wild horses should match the lowest stat available for that horse breed in the stables).
Additionally you should be able to sell your owned horses for half the original price, instead of purely discarding them.
Saddles should be able to be edited after purchased and sold for half the original price.
Embrace modders ala Fallout 4 If RDO can create an open, creative marketplace for mods similar to what happened with FO4 then this game gets a new lease on life and potentially becomes immortal. There'd have to be restrictions based on competitive advantage, but if it can be done then it'd change the game.
Pack mule/donkey You should be allowed to buy a pack mule and one of several large capacity saddles to equip. But there has to be some risk. I say you can have your pack mule, but as long as it is in use it is accessible to everyone so your “treasure” can be stolen if you’re not on guard.
The donkey is as fast as a scrawny nag and has unlimited stamina.
I’d like to see this implemented with a “gold panner” role, but don’t have much of an idea how to make that enjoyable.
Farming role (mannish) I have no interest in it, but I do have interest in rustling your cattle/horses. As long as bandits are able to add an element of risk then I’d love to see people get the farming role that seems to be so popular here.
Kayak/white water race Because why not! A 16 head race via kayak down the Dakota or on flatiron lake with stormy weather.
Rodeo Another idea based on bringing players together and getting them away from the job-like grind. Maybe hosted at McFarland or the stables of Valentine.
Players get to ride a bucking bull. This would only work with extensive motion capture and taking the physics to the extreme.
The main appeal would be the carnage once the bull wins.
I’d like this to be an “open event” where it occurs naturally in the freedom and anyone who happens to be crossing by could stop, rest and watch the show.
The area would have to be a passive space to prevent griefing.
Marine warfare There’s a lot of boats on the water; would be a shame if someone were to fix a cannon to one of em…
A simple idea, maybe implemented in a showdown series, but let’s make use of the water and the environments. How about a steamboat battle on Flatiron lake at sundown. One person steers, the other is the gunner.
There could also be variants of this idea or a king of the mountain kind of event where one posse holds control of one of the larger riverboats and the opposing posse is tasked with boarding and subduing the ship.
This would be best with expanded melee and by making it melee only imo.
Horde mode Simple fun. Hosted at FT. Mercer. You and your friends take on an army of enemies of your choice. From Del Lobos, a herd of Grizzlies to an ever expanding pack of Florida Panthers.
See how long you can hang on.
Ability card load outs Racing, free roaming, in a showdown series, out to hunt, handling a random attacker. Each scenario requires very different ability card load outs and accessing the cards to “shuffle them” isn’t very effective when you find yourself in the midsts. There should be an option to save and equip your 5 favorite ability card setups.
Private lobbies I was against private lobbies until I got into one myself. I imagine entry level players would greatly appreciate a private lobby so that they can get their footing while not having to worry about a level 300 making their life miserable. And, as long as the game still features bugs that are solved by having a restricted server then why not (or at least keep the current private glitch open as a nod to the issues). For this to work and be fair I’d propose that there be no long distant deliveries in a private lobby and your local deliveries pay 75% of what it’d pay in a open lobby Free aim showdowns Free aim showdowns to be a constant option, not part of a rotating slate. They are a unique setting in this game and the players who gravitate to that play style have no other option at the moment. Enough with the limited showdowns I know what I want to play and I know what I don’t want to play, so let the players select the showdown they want to engage in without having to endure several rounds of games that they don’t want to play. And yes, I would disallow PIB in all free-aim sessions. People chose to play free-aim, free-aim is distinctly atypical from the standard RDO experience, so it should be expected that you, the player who chose to join a free-aim session should adjust. !!!!!!!!!! Snipers !!!!!!!!!! I cannot describe how i loathe what has become of snipers in this game. No more sniper dance!
If you are looking down your scope then you are locked in or made extremely slow. I’d also do away with the sniper aim assist, but that’s less offensive than the sniper dance mess that has developed as a trend in this game.
Deathmatch Just do a good-old fashion death match. It ain’t that hard
**Quality of life**
Ready Showdown “ready-up” should start the game at 1/2 of the players in lobby readying up
Store melee weapons in locker I have a reinforced lasso. I am never going to intentionally select the regular lasso. Let me get it and all the other melee and throwable weapons out of the way.
Customizable horse coats There is no reason that certain coats are tied to a certain tier of horse breeds. Sure, this would lead to a ton of black horses out there, but we’d also get to see some of the more unique coats that never make it out of the stables because they’re tied to lesser tier of horse breeds.
Saddle up your hunting wagon You’ve got 10 horses in your stable… you should be able to use at least one of them on your hunting wagon to make it more personalized.
Custom arrange your stable For those who have clear favorites. If ypu’re a player who has maxed out their stable spaces I’d imagine it’d be appreciated to be able to sort your horses, making the horses you are most active with be readily available to be selected.
Custom Arrange your consumables / store consumables Those canned peaches are for moonshinnin', not for eating!
Hold to cook all Read the heading. This ain’t single player and this isn’t immersion, it’s a pain. Or integrate cripps into the scenario and have him cook meat that you donate to the trader table and have that meat be stored, when cooked, in the lockbox.
Hold x to maintains speed (on horse) See above
Cinematic auto pilot on carts Because it makes no sense that I have to continuously press ‘x’ to keep the cart in motion. Just let the carts go into auto-pilot like we can with horses.
Execute wounded animals I’ll buy 15 gold bars immediately and just for this ability.
Share weapons with posse members. If you find yourself in a posse with a low-level player it’d be a nice touch to “loan” one of your unused weapons to them. The loan would end as soon as that posse member leaves or the posse is disbanded.
Be allowed to breakdown carcases in wagon in order to make space Shouldn’t have to lose a 2 star buck to make space for a 3 star panther. Just allow the player to break down the “discarded animal” for its pelt and meat.
Alert! You have been... If what I continue to read is true and RDO is hosted P2P and not with dedicated servers then that shit needs to change. If someone can elaborate on how that decision (if true) is more than a lazy cost saving measure then feel free to clue me in. You're Rockstar. The dominant player in open world gaming. You can afford to host servers in service of your players.
**The issues:**
The 10 ton bug in the room Fix the bugs. All the bugs.
We all know what they are and we are updating our lists as new ones sprout up. Fix this. Don’t wait for the next generation of consoles, and if there is some massive. My $500 delivery should not have it’s supplies spawn underneath the map in valentine when it get’s wrecked in the Great Plains… That’s just the newest and most infuriating variation on the RDO rodeo (what I call the experience of trying to stick with this game while dealing with all the various frustrations). I’ve been playing games since the SNES, I was there for the first online multiplayer experiences on consoles. And I have never experienced such deep and persistent errors and issues with a tripleA game.
This is pretty much the only game I play online at the moment so I can’t speak too much about the other underachievers (Fallout 76, No Mans Sky) but from what I read the experiences there are and have improved by leaps and bounds leaving RDO as the buggy mess where you kinda gotta expect to get screwed over at some point so that you are mentally prepared for it and don’t launch your controller into the ceiling. This is not a good look.
Anybody out there? Communicate/interact with us (the players/the customers). RDO is the only game I play online with, but hearing of other games and their community managers, maps for the future and general interaction with their players. Just letting us know what is to come / what we have to expect / what we have to “work toward” would go a long was in soothing the frustrations of the player base. At the very least I hope that at least acknowledge the bugs in some way, at least that would signal that a solution is in the works.
Speaking callously, now is the time for acts of “public relations” R*/T2 clearly treat it’s players as customers first and foremost and only put up the slightest veil of being a “community”. That needs to change. We’re going through a goddamn pandemic, people are sheltered in place and social distanced. The time is now to make your push
At the very least put out a “we’re in this together” message with real content or additions/ discounts that the entirety of the player-base will enjoy, not just the newcomers - Now is the time to open up and really make the players feel like you care that you want to help the get through this by providing the most entertaining experience you possibly can, within reason. For the sake of the company, because I feel we all have a vested interest in seeing RDO become great, I hope the lines of communication open up past the suggestion webpage where you’ll likely get a prefab response no matter how detailed and specific your suggestion/issue was.
The lack of content is an issue and it is doubly damaging that there is no communication. You’ll always hear the defense that, “GTA didn’t have much content at this point in it’s life either,” but that was almost a generation of consoles ago when GTAO was released. GTAO’s timeline and learning curve should not be allowed to be applied to RDO because Rockstar now gets to work with a the foundation of what they learned from GTAO. It should be reasonable to expect RDO to have much more content than GTAO did at the same time in it’s timeline. Especially considering this is now the flagship of R*'s gaming catelogue.
Corona is also no excuse.
Some of these issues and the general lack of imagination have been an issue since beta. Yes, the pandemic will slow down progress now, but that doesn’t account for all the issues that have been overlooked and unattended while R*/T2 have been at the highest vigilance and respond almost immediately to money and gold glitches.
If You’re tired of complaints: Then you should have taken the note and skipped this section, you are not obligated to read every post on the sub.
Tired of negative posts: sorry, but if the game weren’t so broken and lacking then there wouldn’t be so many negative posts, though I hope that my hopes for the future can give others hope as well.
RDO isn’t being ignored, but it’s dying and people are losing the faith they once had in the potential of this game. Hopefully some of these ideas will gain favor with y’all and you’ll submit them or a version of them yourselves. If nothing else this can serve as an exercise of “what could be’s” while getting creative with what is capable in our cowboy dress-up sim.
I'd love to hear your ideas.
RDO has a fantastic foundation but it is the most frustrating game I have ever played from a major developer for the lack of support and content. The lack of content I can give a slight pass on since it’s mainly a selfish ask born out of the potential this game holds. The bugs are inexcusable, especially from a multi-billion dollar company that refuses to communicate. The fanbase is losing hope and I have my doubts they’ll still be here for the next generation “double-dip” that many are expecting to be the point when RDO really takes off. This game needs work now, the players/customers deserve content (and dropping a well-done expansion while everyone is social-distanced can only help player loyalty/affinity). The time is now. Get on your horse Rockstar!
The Brawler Role (A detailed ideia for future updates)
Yesterday I was writing some of my stuff when I realized how awesome would be to have a brawlefighter role in the online portion of the game. So I developed a full detailed guide of what this role could be. Do you think this would be a good ideia? I personally would love to share this with you guys and probably get this on the game. “Brawlers engage themselves in fistfight competitions for a chance to win prestige and money.” There are some missions and events that they can participate. This role would be similar to the bounty hunter in some aspects of accepting a contract on free roam. MISSIONS -Free Roam Contracts: Normal Fight ($): A fight with one or two enemies per posse member. Unlocked from the beginning. Hard Fight ($$): A fight that can range between one hard fighter to four normal fighters per posse member. Unlocked at Rank 4. Very Hard Fight: A fight that can range between one very hard fighter to six normal fighters per posse member. Unlocked at Rank 12. Legendary Fight: Fighters of legend, like legendary bounties, they are more difficult and have more background to it. Up to 5 stars of difficulty after a replay. Unlocked from the beginning. Guide: How to Prepare for Adventuring - Farming Rupees/Food/Arrows/Bows/Weapons
Guide: How to Prepare for Adventuring -
Farming Rupees/Food/Dishes/Arrows/Bows/Weapons
Purpose of this Guide: This guide aims to be a compendium of information about how to stock up and get ready for the scale of this game. There is simply so much to explore that if you are not prepared before heading off into a random direction, you may not survive or be able to reach where you are going. The information below helps the up and coming adventurer gear up and become ready for anything (without having to spoil too much of the game). This is something I wish I could have found when I first stepped foot off the Plateau, so hopefully it'll help some of you out. That being said, even a seasoned adventurer may find use in some of the insights below (especially farming techniques) so don't think there isn't something for everyone here!
SPOILER WARNING This guide covers certain areas within the game you will need to visit, and a few minor side quest spoilers. Please read at your own risk, but I promise this post will have no major storyline spoilers. Call me out if it does and I'll edit the post immediately.
NOTE: This post also assumes you have made it off the Plateau and are ready to explore the world. If you are still on the Plateau please stop reading now.
Step 1: Get Some Wheels
Find A Horse & Register it at a Stable Horses allow you to speedily make your way through the world during the time where you can't Fast Travel from location to location. The first thing you should do before trying to find said Fast Travel locations is tame a horse. Horses can be found out in the wild, normally grassy plains areas, and can be tamed by sneaking up on them and mounting them. Once you have mounted a horse, you will need to rapidly tap the "soothe" button until little red hearts appear around the horses head. This means the horse has stopped trying to buck you off. Taming a horse takes stamina, so be sure to have a full bar or something to refill you stamina on hand. Normal horses will take less than a single circle of stamina to tame. More exotic horses will take much more. Once you can successfully steer the horse, continue to "soothe" it as you bring it to a nearby stable. Once near a stable, Z-Target the stable owner and choose to talk to them. Ask them to register your horse for a price of 20 Rupee's. Once registered, horses can be taken or stored from any stable across the land. Use this to Fast Travel and retrieve your horse in a completely different location.
You can feed your horse things such as apples or carrots to improve your "relationship" with them after you have registered them. From what I can tell one apple or one carrot will add 10 to the meter you can see when choosing which horse to take from the stable. It's a quick way to instantly max out the relationship status so you don't have to deal with it disobeying during your travels. Feeding them Endura Carrots can also give them an extra one time use spur when galloping. I managed to get three extra spurs on one horse for a total of six. These extra ones disappear as soon as they are used though so use them wisely. A special thanks to user u/Leshiarelaohk for his insight into feeding horses!
Also, you can customize your horse's look (mane, tail, bridle, and saddle) by talking to the NPC tending the stabled horses at any stable. NOTE: the bond with your horse must be high. Credit to u/Nick_0f_Time for his original post found HERE.
For those interested, the horse with the highest stamina in the game can be found extremely close to the Plateau. This would be an ideal starter horse while you are trying to uncover more portions of your map. To find this horse, make your way off the Plateau North West of Hopper Pond and take the pathway west. When the path splits, take the right path which will lead you to the Outskirt Stable. Once there, talk to an old man outside the stable mumbling about a white horse. He will give you a side quest to find and tame said horse. The horse can be located just north west of the stable on Safula Hill. A Gif of the location can be found HERE. Look for an all-white horse near the run down structure to the north portion of Safula Hill. It will take more than a single circle to tame this horse, so bring something that restores stamina. I suggest a cooked Staminoka Bass easily found in the lake next to riverside stable. Or if you are just coming from the Plateau, try cooking a Staminilla Mushroom with other mushrooms. The more stamina refilling ingredients in the dish, the more stamina the cooked dish will restore.
The White Horse has the following stats:

Having MAX stamina on your first horse is clutch. Just food for thought.
Step 2: Find Your Way
Complete the World Map In order to efficiently use this guide, you will need be able to find where you need to go. The best way to do this is to complete the game's world map. You do so by visiting the Towers in each "blacked out" portion of your map. The beauty of this game is that you can do ALL THE THINGS as soon as you make it off the Plateau, you just have to be brave enough. (Or quick enough to run past encounters and B-line it to a tower) Personally, the first thing I did was mark all of the towers on my map that I could see from on top of the Plateau, then paraglided/ran/climbed to said towers, and then looked for more. Rinse and repeat until the entire map is completed. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO THIS IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO. Having a completed map just makes it easier to fast travel to different locations, and enables you to easily identify locations in this guide by name when looking at your in game map.
If you DO NOT wish to complete your map, the towers and locations you will NEED to visit for this guide are: This is where you will find the Wasteland Tower. It is located South West of the Great Plateau.
Expand Your Inventory So You Can Hold More Weapons / Bows / Shields Since you have already expanded your world a little bit, you have most likely run across a large Korok named Hestu. Hestu is the NPC that will take the Korok seeds you have been collecting/discovering throughout the game. He will trade you more inventory slots in exchange for Korok Seeds. You will need a larger inventory space if you want to start your adventuring with items already in hand. If you usually head out with just a pot lid, you can skip this part.
Hestu can first be found on the pathway leading to Kakariko Village. You should organically run into him on your way to discovering Kakariko Village. He will move from here after you have upgraded your inventory twice.
Second
Next to Riverside Stable (Between Whistling Hill and Batrea Lake)
Hestu will be found just outside the area of the Riverside Stable. He will move from this location after you have upgraded your inventory another 5ish times.
Third
Korok Forest north of Hyrule Castle & through the Lost Woods
This will be the final resting place of Hestu. You can upgrade your inventory with him as long as you continue to find Korok Seeds.
To completely upgrade your inventory, you will only need 441/900 possible Korok Seeds. If you have already used Hestu, you will know he requires more Korok Seeds for each additional inventory slot upgrade. See the cost breakdown below:

Step 4: Become Top Chef
Finding / Farming “Must Have” Food Ingredients & Cooking the Best Dishes Food is extremely important in this game. And you can use/consume just about anything you find to heal or get some sort of buff. However, I believe the right ingredients & best recipes are THE most important part of using consumables in Breath of the Wild.
Before I get into detailed theory and explanations, you first need to know some basics about consumables, cooking, and inventory management.
Consumables found in the wild will re-grow / re-spawn.
If an item grows out of the ground or off of a tree, it can re-grow after a certain period of in-game time. This time can, and usually is, shorter than the next Blood Moon.
Example: Apples on trees
If an item doesn't "grow" and isn't strictly found inside a treasure chest, it will re-spawn after a Blood Moon.
Example: Ore deposits
Adding more of an item into a dish adds more of the buff that item yields.
Example: a dish of 1 apple restores less hearts than a dish of 5 apples
Cooking any dish that uses an "overfill" ingredient automatically fully restores your base stamina/heart values.
Example: By using an ingredient where the informational text indicates it will provide a temporary "yellow" heart, a dish of just that ingredient will fill all of your red hearts first before giving you the temporary heart. It doesn't matter if you have 3 red hearts or 20, that dish made up of just 1 ingredient will refill ALL of your red hearts. Same goes for stamina.
You have a limited number of inventory spaces for cooked items that can never be expanded.
You are allotted 3.5 pages of cooked dishes in your inventory, credit to u/Cyndikate
Dishes you cook in the pot each take up a single inventory space.
This is important for managing inventory space.
Items you cook over an open flame stack in your inventory.
(only take up a single inventory space no matter how many you make/pick up)
Items cooked over an open flame heal less than their “dish” counterpart and do not provide buffs
Example: A cooked pepper (or a pepper as part of a dish) heals and adds a cold resist buff, whereas a scorched pepper cooked over an open flame only heals less and provides no buff.
Items cooked over an open flame can over-cook and disappear.
Example: You can drop an apple on a fire and it will catch flame and change into a toasted apple. If that same apple is left on the fire it will catch flame again and eventually disappear.
You can sort cooked food by type and level of buff/restore in your inventory.
By pressing “Y” (on the switch) you can sort each of your inventory types. For food, this will arrange by buff type first and by power second.
Below are my personal Core Values when it comes to consumables in this Game. Each value is followed by my justification / theory behind it. Please feel free to adopt them. Or don't. It won't hurt my feelings at all. Really.
All of the ingredients I use should be easy to gather & plentiful.
If an item is rare to find, why the hell would I used it in a regular elixir to restore 5ish hearts? The hoarder in me knows someday, for some reason, I'm going to need that one special ingredient. So instead of wasting potentially valuable items, why not use what princess nature so abundantly provides? Why waste specialized mushrooms or animal parts to make a stamina elixir when I can just cook a single Staminoka Bass and it will restore a full circle of stamina? There is always something that is the best at what it does and can be found frequently in the wild.
Everything I cook should be medium to high level, or it should fully maximize the potential gains.
Remember that one time you spotted a tower at the top of a mountain, made it all the way to the top, and realized it was too cold to stay there and finish activating the tower? Me too. It was on that day that I swore NEVER to die from the cold again. Until that other time where I DID have a cold resist dish, but it was low level and I STILL died of cold because I went even higher into the snowy region this time. On THAT day I swore to only carry medium to high level dishes/elixirs. If the dish I create can't handle ALL of the possible scenarios I will need the buff/resist for, then why waste the ingredients? If I simply added a little more of the same ingredient I could have survived that fateful night on the snowy mountaintop. Low level dishes are for low level risk. Be willing to take the big risks adventurer.
Stamina is Stamina and Hearts are Hearts. Don't mix gains within the same dish.
Specialize with your recipes, don't just throw things in and have a portion of your dish that doesn't matter. Say you've been upgrading only your stamina at the beginning of the game. You now have 2 full stamina circles but still only have 3 hearts. So now you want to make sure you can refill that big stamina meter, so you add more things to your dishes. What you end up with is something that refills two stamina circles and restores 15 hearts. That's a lot of wasted healing on your 3 heart self. Why not just use stamina ingredients and make stamina dishes and cook some apples to make dishes that refill up to 3 hearts? Waste not my brave adventurer. Keeping your heart refilling recipes focused on hearts and your stamina replenishing recipes focused on stamina.
Prioritize "overfill" healing rather than "x" number of refilled hearts.
Remember the cooking tidbit above about items that overfill either hearts or stamina inherently having the ability to completely restore all of your base stamina or hearts? Use this to you advantage. Cook a single overfill item and you have a full-restore dish. Use this instead of cooking 5 ingredients and still not refilling your entire health. Waste not my brave adventurer.
Have one of every buff type on hand at all times, but only cook particular buffs when I know I'll need them.
Remember the story of my icy death earlier. If I had been prepared, that wouldn't have happened. Always be prepared. (Insert Boy/Girl Scout joke here) Nothing is worse than setting your sights on some treasure chest or mountain you want to climb that is NO WHERE NEAR a shrine, only to realize you won't survive within 100 yards without a certain resist or buff. Always having a medium to high dish for each of the resist and buff types allows you to have complete freedom of exploration. That being said, don't go crazy and carry 10 cold resist dishes. Remember, you only have a certain number of inventory slots for dishes. In all likelihood the 7-10 minutes of resist from the one dish you always carry on you is enough to get you where you need to go, or give you enough time to escape from where you've already been. The only caveat to this point is that if you know you're going to spend the afternoon on the snowy mountain tops, you may want to prep a little bit more for cold resist. Make a few extra and head on your way.
BEST INGREDIENT FARMING RUNS The top three ingredients/recipes/dishes/buffs that everyone wants to farm are:
Basic Healing Items - things to restore your red hearts
Overfill Healing Items - things to add yellow hearts to your health
Stamina Refilling Items - things to refill your stamina when it's low
Below are the easiest / fastest / most rewarding farming methods to accomplish the three items above:
Basic Healing Items
Raw Prime Meat Farming (Deer Hunt Mini-game) - Raw Prime Meat can be cooked over an open flame to create Seared Prime Steak, which heals for 2 1/4 red hearts. These items also stack in your inventory and only take up one slot. You can farm 5-10 of these per minute utilizing the Deer Hunt Mini-game in Hateno Village.
Hearty Durian Farming (+20 Yellow Hearts) - x5 Hearty Durians can be cooked in a pot to create Hearty Simmered Fruit, which fully restores your red hearts and provides an extra 20 yellow hearts. These items are found right next to the Faron tower and can be easily farmed every 5-6 in game days. You can farm 5-15 of these per run.
Staminoka Bass Farming (Full Wheel Stamina Refill with Each Fish) - a single Staminoka Bass can be cooked in a pot to create an Energizing Fish Skewer, which fully restores an entire stamina wheel. These can be abundantly found in the river next to the Riverside Stable and have an incredibly quick respawn rate. You can farm 20+ of these in a 5-10 minute farming run.
This item is one of the highest healing items that can be cooked over an open flame. The benefit to cooking over an open flame is that this item will stack and only take up a single inventory slot.
The lists above will continue to expand as I explore the game. If you have anything you think would be a good addition to the tables above, comment below and I will incorporate them.
Step 5: Stock Up on Ammo
Farming Unlimited Regular Arrows Starting out in this game, arrows are hard to come by. You usually pick up 3-5 every time you bait a bow wielding enemy. I'm here to help you alleviate that pain. If you follow the directions below, you can farm 200 regular arrows every 10 minutes. This farm can be done as long as you want, so if you want 10,000 arrows there's nothing stopping you from being THAT guy. If you exit Kakariko Village via the Western exit (GIF of the location) it will take you to the Sahasra Slope. In this open field you will ALWAYS run into two horse riding enemies. These enemies will continuously circle you and fire arrows. The key point here is that these arrows can ALWAYS be picked up off the ground. The combination of their low grade bows, the soft grass, and the distance that they circle you allows their arrows to hit the ground, not break, and become available to be picked up. The farming method here is to simply walk (DO NOT SPRINT. Sprinting causes you to get hit more often or have the enemies back away and stop firing.) in a circle from arrow to arrow as they hit the ground. You can pick them up as they fall for an infinite amount of time.
THE YIELD FOR THIS FARMING METHOD IS 200 ARROWS EVERY 10 MINUTES.
NOTE - This method may not work on the Wii U. The Wii U may have a hard cap to the number of arrows any enemy can put into the world to be picked up. There have been conflicting reports on this subject, but I say try it out and see if it works for you!
DESCRIPTION: Head North West to the Hebra Tower and make your way West to Pondo's Lodge. Once there, you can speak to Pando and pay 20 Rupees to play his Bowling Mini-game. If you know where to drop to ball, strikes are super easy. A strike nets you +300 Rupees. This is the most popular Rupee farming method out there. The only drawback is that it requires you to have 2 cold resist items to survive the area.
DESCRIPTION: Head South East to the Lurelin Village (Yah Rin Shrine for Fast Travel) and find a hut with Cloyne sitting in it. This is the gambling house. Here you can bet 100 Rupees for a 1/3 chance at getting 300 Rupees. The trick here is to save before each time you bet, and if you don't find the 300 reload your save.
DESCRIPTION: This method requires either max Stamina or the climber set +2 to be truly fast & efficient. Head North East to the Gorae Torr Shrine. Here you can do the Gut Check Challenge Mini-game to climb the side of the mountain and collect Rupees on the way up. If you follow the path outlined in the links below, you can easily get 700 Rupees per run. Each run takes about 2.5 minutes.
DESCRIPTION: This method requires a lot of arrows and a few decent bows, so there's a trade off on items for money. Head East to Hateno Village (Ancient Tech Lab for Fast Travel). Find Dantz at the farm at the top of the village and start the Deer Hunt Mini-game. Here you can farm 5-10 Raw Prime Meats per minute. 5 of these meats can be cooked to create a dish that sells for 210 Rupees.
Buy a House to Store Items, Rest in a Free Bed, and Always Have a Lit Cooking Stove In Hateno Village, there is an abandoned house that is being demolished when you first find it. If you make your way through a series of tasks (mostly paying people to do things) you can acquire this house and use it to hold weapons, bows, and shields. There is also a free bed inside you can rest at, and an always lit cooking pot outside. This is a great investment early on in the game.
How to Buy the House:
Find the house. It is located South of the center of Hateno Village. See this image for a more precise location.
Go around back and find the NPC Bolson. He will be the guy in pink.
NOTE: Sometimes Bolson has moved from this initial location if you have started another side quest. He can be found in Tarry Town. Complete the side quest that brought him there and he'll come back to Hateno Village.
Pay Bolson 3,000 Rupees and 30 bundles of wood.
YOU OWN AN EMPTY HOUSE!
Upgrade your house by paying Bolson 100 Rupees per upgrade. You can upgrade your house with the following:
Two extra Weapon Mounts
Three Bow Mounts
Three Shield Mounts
Bed Installation
Lighting Installations
Door Installation
A Sign with Link's Name
A Flowerbed
Trees
The cost for everything listed above combined is 1,400 Rupees.
Use your new found abode to store rare items you find in game by placing them on the displays inside. Anything simply dropped on the floor of your house will eventually disappear. That being said, this is still a great base of operations where you can cook, sleep, and store your most precious belongings.
Step 8: Gear Up
Finding / Farming Easily Obtainable Yet Strong Weapons All weapons that aren't from a treasure chest will respawn after a Blood Moon. Knowing where a couple of these respawning weapons are located can help you gear up fast. Below is a list of the best weapons you can easily farm every Blood Moon:

This particular list will continue to grow and become more precise the longer this post lives. Comment below on anything else you would like added to the list and I'll put them in for everyone else to see.
BONUS: Adventure Pro Tips
A Compendium of PSA's to Become a Better Adventurer Below is a list of PSA's and General Tips to maximize your quality of life in Breath of the Wild:
If you don't already have your complete map unlocked, you can use the online version found HERE made & maintained by IGN
You can trade the heart containers for stamina containers and stamina containers for heart containers. See u/yust's post about it HERE. The shrine to do this is located southwest of Hateno Village. Specifically HERE (picture coming soon).
How to ensure you have completed and found all of the treasure in a shrine:
A shrine will become completely blue if you have claimed the Spirit Orb within. (Usually starts with a little bit of yellow on both the physical shrine and the shrine's icon on your map once you have discovered and activated a shrine)
When you select a shrine on you map, if a small treasure chest icon appears to the right of a shrine's name you have found all of the treasure chests / loot within said shrine.
You can drop bombs while paragliding. Activate the bomb rune, and enjoy carpet bombing enemies!
Take rust off of weapons by throwing them into the mouth of a Rock Octorok. The Octorok will spit out the rust free version of the weapon. Credit to u/panqakee's original post found HERE.
The Blood Moon will respawn all Guardians inside shrines. Use this knowledge to farm harder to find Ancient Materials or Guardian Weapons.
If an enemy shoots and arrow at your wooden shield, it will stick to your shield. Stow your shield to add those arrows to your inventory.
If you find a pinwheel in the world, this is a Korok mini-game. Find something to stand on, or stand in the right position and balloons you need to shoot will appear.
You can use a picture from your compendium in combination with your Sheikah Slate's upgraded sensor to find harder to find items such as: treasure chests, certain types of fish, rare but powerful ingredients, etc.
Aim your bow in air to slow down time and aim precisely. Similar to VATS without all the detail.
You can reflect Guardian blasts with ANY shield as long as you time the swinging of your shield correctly. (Yes, even a pot lid will work. See: the legendary Pot Lid Larry)
Bonus stats from dishes or elixirs do not stack. EXAMPLE: you can't use two 1 minute cold resist elixirs to get 2 minutes of cold resistance. The same goes for multiple types of stat bonuses. You only keep the stats bonus of the last consumed dish/elixir.
Don't use axes or other weapons to chop down trees, use your bombs. One bomb = Tree down. Second bomb = collectable wood. Really, just use bombs for all things that need to be destroyed. (ore deposits [not if they are on a mountain side since the resulting items will most certainly fall], fish, crates/barrels, metal containers, the courage of your enemies, etc.)
You can Travel mid combat/falling/paragliding. At any moment, you can Fast Travel out of a situation. Use this to get out of encounters you are not equipped to deal with.
If you tip over one of the broken down ancient guardians, there are ancient parts underneath. Credit to u/youhoe for his original post found HERE.
The Stasis Tool can also be used to highlight collectables in your general vicinity. While farming have it active to see interactable objects in a bright yellow glow. You must temporarily turn it off to collect the items.
You can catch fairies and keep them in your inventory. They will resurrect you if you die, as they did in previous games. You can catch them around the Great Fairy fountains. New fairies in the wild will not spawn if you have 3 of more in your inventory. Therefore, you can have a total of 6 at a single time (2 already in your inventory and then discover 4 at once in the wild). Credit to PaztheSpaz for the clarification.
Don't waste your fire arrows unless you have to. Equip your bow and walk by a lit fire. The arrow tip lights. Use this to set off red barrels or light your target ablaze.
There are separate cooldown timers for the round and square bombs. Use this to your advantage, especially when you upgrade them. Throw a bomb, switch to the other type, throw it, switch, throw, switch... Credit to user u/zombiegamer723.
Brand new weapons have a small sparkle in the top right corner. This means the item is unused and is at full durability. Credit to user u/TogTogTogTog.

Guide: How to Prepare for Adventuring -
Farming Rupees/Food/Dishes/Arrows/Bows/Weapons
Cross-Post: This is a cross post from Breath_of_the_Wild. I know not everyone may frequent both sub's, so I thought I would post this here as well in order for everyone to have the opportunity to take advantage of the information below.

BEST OF CLASS: Thank you u/Aceftw for your find of the "Ali Babas Cave". This is your one stop shop for a bow, shield, spear, duel handed sword, and single handed sword.

Fast Travel to the Ancient Tech Lab in Hateno Village. Walk inside the front door and one of these should be leaning against a shelf to your immediate left.
Arrows can be used as unlimited torches as well. They will go out after a short while but they wont burn up like a wooden weapon and u can just relight it. Keep the arrow notched and use your aim to light things on fire like leaves and other torches or stand next to ice to melt it. Credit to u/mcunderpants.
