The thing I find most alarming about the new policies is actually the second bullet point as well as the highlighted one.
"Violence, including display of serious injury and events related to violent extremism."
Now, obviously I don't consider ISIS beheading videos to be the most carefree or enjoyable viewing experience... but is Youtube seriously going to punish uploaders - which is what demonetization is, make no mistake - for spreading information about actual events that are transpiring as a result of global jihad? People need to be informed about the nature of the crisis - the war, for fuck sake - we're in right now.
Look at the wording. It's so vague. "Events" related to radical extremism. What the hell does that mean? Will the footage of Sharia Patrols in Copenhagen and London be flagged? Will the cell phone footage of Cologne on New Year's Eve be flagged? Will they seriously attempt to punish content creators for informing the public in any way about anything related to the Migrant Crisis or radical Islam? This strikes me as full Orwellian, narrative curating shit, fam.
Putting on my tinfoil hat for the moment... John Kerry recently gave a speech in Bangladesh where he stated he wished the media didn't cover terrorism so much, his reasoning amounting to - laughably, terrifyingly - people would be happier for it. Literally advocating for blissful ignorance. With that in mind, we also know that - not making a partisan declaration either way, just stating a fact - the general attitude of westerners towards immigration, particularly Muslim immigration, has hardened at an astronomical rate over the past two years. We know that - whether you call it the alt-right, the Trump Train or whatever else - there is a huge groundswell of populist-nationalism forcing itself into the western mainstream as a direct reaction to the kind of videos I mentioned above. Most importantly, we also know that there is a capitalist-oligarch-class within our society who stand to lose billions if the closed borders and de-globalization these movements demand ever came to fruition.
All of those things considered... is it possible that this policy change is, in part, motivated by a recognition by those oligarchs - of which Google is a firmly entrenched player - that unhindered publication of information relating to the Migrant Crisis and ISIS will only stoke the fires of Trump-esque movements until their momentum becomes insurmountable? A recognition tempered by the insight that banning such videos outright would martyr and Streisand Effect the cause, perhaps?
Maybe I played too much Mankind Divided. Maybe I spend too much time on The_Donald. I hope I'm completely wrong. Would be interested to hear any thoughts from you amazing reptiles!
