The Scarlet Letter: Let's talk about RWBY and its mlm representation.

I have been sitting on this post for nearly four weeks waiting until the 15th due to the Before the Dawn spoiler rules.
So let's start with a blunt statement: RWBY's male LGBT representation has not been good. If the series' handling of female LGBT rep is good (which... well there's worse shows) and the general standard for how you write LGBT characters in a show like this, its handling of male rep has been... how not to. And Before the Dawn kinda solidified the idea in my head that the show's handling of its male LGBT cast just isn't good enough, either by the standards of when RWBY began in 2013, or today in 2020 when compatively massive steps have been taken over the past decade to show a more diverse list of characters... or at least a more diverse list of female characters.
I don't wanna make this a pissing match over how over-or-under-represented male or female LGBT characters are, but I feel like it's safe to say that the majority of the trend-setters for modern romances, especially in western animation, have been between women. Korra and Asami from Korra, Chloe and Max from Life is Strange, Marceline and Bubblegum in Adventure Time (insert the relevant Steven Universe characters here, never watched it), and more recently, Adora and Catra in She-Ra and Luz in Owl House.
Compatively, while studies have shown that in general male LGBT characters get more appearances on a purely numerical level, in general they're more one-off characters there to pad a roster, or played more for comedy (see Josh Gad in the Beauty and the Beast remake or the gay guy in Avengers Endgame that was more notable for how hard China and Russia snapped him out of existance). The only big male-LGBT focused media I can think of from the last decade would be Yuri On Ice, Moonlight, IDW's Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye (Chromedome/Rewind best pairing fuck you Roberts for issue 16) Love Simon, Promaire, and the anime adaptation of Banana Fish.
So it's no surprise that RWBY basically follows these ideas. It's big romance is (unless the writers are very stupid) going to be between Blake and Yang, their first out character was Ilia, Coco got sent to the Book Dimension where she confirmed "I use my sunglasses to perv on women without their knowledge" which uh... yeah you can definitely tell RWBY is written by men... and Volume 6 had Saph and Terra being a good example of an LGBT couple without any real drama. In the last three years alone, the show has drastically increased its lesbian and bisexual characters, alongside even including its first out trans character in May Marigold (albeit only revealed on Twitter). In general, these depictions of sexuality have been pretty OK. Would have liked it if Ilia wasn't immediately written out of the show after Volume 5 as it made her feel a bit more disposable than intended but whatever, subject for another day.
RWBY's male rep though is a bit spottier. There's the plant bois in Volume 5's premiere, we nearly had Pilot Boi until some last-minute revisions, and... Scarlet.
Why Scarlet's a bad launchpad for male LGBT rep
I don't like Scarlet or how his sexuality has been handled. Scarlet's homosexuality wasn't revealed in the show, or by the writers, or even in anything that's actually canon. He's confirmed gay in his sole of dialogue in a non-canon fan anthology, where the manga's Twitter team had to say that Miles suggested the idea and approved of it.
In short, Scarlet is Dumbledore'd, where his sexuality is revealed in out-of-show material and in a way that doesn't make it supremely obvious (Miles himself never commented to confirm this so this news was limited in how far it could spread. I'm genuinely curious how many people still don't know Scarlet's gay), and Scarlet himself is a nothing character who was written out of the show after Volume 3 and only reappeared in Before The Dawn, half a decade after he vanished. Compared to Ilia, as this came out after Ilia's entire arc in Volume 5, it's not a great starting point for mlm rep. But things would have been forgiven if it had gotten better, if the show did have more male LGBT characters introduced, even just on the Saphron/Terra level of just being around for a few episodes before leaving. Then it would have been a misfire but then we could all say "Things got better."
It... didn't. Which is why when Before the Dawn released in 2020, a full two years after Scarlet was first confirmed gay, while the franchise had more than doubled its wlw rep, Scarlet remained the one male character in the entire franchise who had a name and liked men. I remember vividly a fake leak for After The Fall which claimed Yatsuhashi would come out to Velvet and admit to having a crush on Fox. And I remember as well how many people were disappointed when it was said to be false, because it would have been nice for Yatsuhashi's character, especially after the fleshing out he gets in the CFVY books. If Yatsu had come out as gay in the books I'd like his writing enough to say he's a good case for rep, albeit with the caveat of "This is all in side material." But in reality, the leak was fake and Coco was confirmed gay instead.
Unfortunately, Before the Dawn proceeded to ruin Scarlet and made me at times feel genuinely uncomfortable as a queer man! Let's talk about that.
Before The Dawn is crap and Scarlet's writing is borderline offensive
I hate Before the Dawn. It's... bad. I read it while on a vacation and the only solace I had about the entire thing was that I'd bought an M&M chocolate bar. The bar was finished before the book. That bummed me out. It's not a very well written book, the prose is very Early 2010s YA Writer, none of the characters are memorable and there's various Fun Incidents like "NGDO using children as bait for Grimm," and "Neptune's hydrophpobia being used as a threat to torture him and the scene is played for comedy."
Theo was cool. I can't wait to see him as written by good writers, he should be a highlight of the Vacuo arc.
I had two hopes for Before the Dawn- "Don't be bad," and "Let Scarlet and Sage be well written." I'd liked how After The Fall had handled some of its characters (barring, y'know, Coco perving on women), especially Fox and Yatsu who were surprising in how much I liked them. I was looking forward to seeing Myers give Sage and Scarlet similar treatment- two relatively nothing characters meant he'd have a blank slate to write them however he wanted, he could give them unique personalties and if nothing else it could be cool to see their Semblances.
And then I read the book. (Sage fans I am so sorry for you, you got baited harder than Johnlock fans)
Scarlet's a giant dickhead in the book. It's his sole character trait and his inner monologues go on, and on, and on about how much he hates Sun, how he revels in mocking him. Most of his dialogue is sarcastic put-downs about Sun and how lame he is, and Sun is never properly allowed to defend himself or point out how going with Blake meant he was able to help save Haven Academy.
(hey remember when Sun in Volume 6 expressly says to Blake "I was a bad leader for ditching Neptune and the others, and I need to work on that" only for Before the Dawn to have him staunchly refuse to accept that he let the team down? I don't think Myers did but I do)
Scarlet being a ratty bitch would be one thing if, again, the franchise had done more rep. He'd still be a badly written character, but it wouldn't sting as much. But because Scarlet is still the only expressly confirmed male LGBT character in canon (the book teases that Nolan is gay but there's never confirmation either way beyond him smiling at Scarlet), it means that he has to represent that entire ideal. So when the one gay man in Remnant is being an asshole and a snide loser, that means that by extension, this is how the franchise sees gay men. And that fucking sucks! I wanted to come out of Before The Dawn singing its praises, I wanted to like the book, but it was a massive letdown, especially coming off of the other big 2020 RWBY controversy involving gay characters.
Yeah. We're doing this.
Clover and Fair Game: Technically not queerbaiting. BUT:
Let's pre-empt this: Clover wasn't queerbaiting, and Fair Game, while cool and I dig it, kudos to them for becoming one of the top 5 RWBY pairings on AO3 in one year that's fucking impressive (I say with mild malice as an IronQrow main), never had a chance. The writing never seriously boosted it barring one interaction which was flirty (them talking in the lobby of the Schnee Manor), and everything else was out of show boosting through the social media teams and CRWBY hyping it themselves by saying they liked it. If you wanna blame people, blame the animators who went off-script with stuff like Kim Newman adding the wink as a deliberate nod to the Volume 4 waitress, or the social media team deliberately using the same policies for Fair Game as they do for Renora and Bumblebee.
It wasn't Eddy's fault that things escalated, and he himself has said that in retrospect, he should have warned people that this never had a shot.
But I can't blame the Fair Game fanbase. Because Fair Game took off like wildfire. It came right as the fanbase began seriously asking for more male rep, Qrow's pretty hot, and the Clover wink came right after the Great IronQrow Reawakening of November 9th, 2019. The rocket was primed, and they rode it to the moon. Finally, to these people, after seven years RWBY seemed to be doing something with mlm rep in show. People started getting into RWBY just for Clover and Qrow's interactions. And if heroes were boring, Watts and Tyrian also had a fantastic dynamic that made Nuts and Volts one of the more popular villain ships overnight. Things seemed to be turning around! RWBY was remembering that gay men existed! You could hear the choir sing!
... And for those people, that meant that episode 12 hit like Truck-Kun.
People got pissed. People were horrified. And it didn't help that some members of CRWBY had said in the build-up that episode 12 would have some shots that made them nauseous (probably the Tyrian thumb thing) Out of context, it looked to these fans like CRWBY were basically laughing at their suffering, like they were saying "Lol, you thought you had a chance, get fucked, I hope your vomit burns on the way up."
Yeah, Fair Game was never gonna be canon, and I think some people ran too far with it. But in the wider context of how desperate RWBY's mlm community had gotten for basic crumbs of content? I can see why they'd run with what they had. The writers aren't at fault for what happened, but CRWBY didn't help matters. And that desperate mix of what felt like official backing from the crew, jokes about how cute the ship was, and the hope that finally the show would have onscreen rep? I can see why people ran with it.
So why is the show more lackluster in depicting mlm characters?
Money. Let's be honest, most RWBY fans don't care if the show doesn't have good male rep. I'm willing to bet some of you reading this won't care and just dismiss it as not being that big a problem. I don't think the writers care if the show doesn't have good mlm rep because they're not poaching that market. They're after what they see as a bigger, more lucrative market, which in this case is female LGBT rep. That gets people buying games, watching shows, raising awareness and boosting awareness of your property, which means you make more money. In short: Two women kissing hits more markets and generates more attention than two men.
Am I saying that Miles, Monty and Kerry deliberately sat down seven years ago and said "We're not doing gay men because it won't generate enough ad revenue and traffic to be worth the loss in revenue from homophobes?" No, that's silly. But I'm saying that it's less important for them, and it shows in the things that are small and add up. Things like Miles not verifying Scarlet's sexuality or retweeting the manga account's confirmation to spread the message (compared to how he enthusiastically confirmed Ilia being a lesbian himself during the Reddit AMA). It shows in how Pilot Boi would have been the first mlm character only to die in his second full episode until M&K were told about the Bury Your Gays trope. It shows in how Shannon believes that Ozma is "megaqueer" and Miles jokingly laughs it off instead of confirming it, leaving it to just be Shannon's headcanon. It shows in how actor shipping is compared between the mlm and wlw ships, where Arryn and Barbara's frequent pushes for Bumblebee are seen as "official confirmation that it's endgame" while Michael and Kerry saying they enjoy Seamonkeys is treated as "well it would be cute if they did it, but they're never going to."
I'm not gonna say anything like "CRWBY are gonna have Qrow end up with a woman like Robyn out of spite against the bad apples of the Fair Game crowd." I'm not gonna say that I don't think CRWBY cares about male representation in the series. It is, however, definitely a low priority for them, and because that leads to gaffes like Scarlet's writing in Before The Dawn being offensive in his depiction, it only makes the contrast between the sexes all the more painfully apparent.
I'm kinda tired of waiting for Rooster Teeth to show that they do care about mlm. I'm kinda tired of RWBY's male rep being written like it came from a 1993 time capsule where I have to enhance the screen to see a guy holding a sign of Sun's abs or be content with the only onscreen rep still being the plant bois in Volume 5. I'm tired of how often the crew dances around answering basic questions about sexuality (and age, and birthdays, and heights, and so on) by treating it as a spoiler question, as if just wanting to know what way people swing would ever be a spoiler. I'm just... tired of all this. When the best mlm rep in Rooster Teeth's history remains the two dads in Camp Camp who show up in a few episodes, that should say something really bad about your company and your biases (To say nothing of the recent Red vs Blue seasons and their blatant queerbaiting for Grif and Simmons and the whole can of worms that is Donut).
I'd like to not feel like I'm borderline unwelcome because I'd like to see two men in this show kiss, and that the sole thing that represents people like me in this show is some British twat who complains about sand.
I'd just like to feel like my sexuality isn't a joke to Rooster Teeth (or at the very least, be like Donut and have it be a funny one). But at this point after the last few years? I feel like a very uncomfortable punchline to them. And it just sucks.

Preview of the Arkansas Derby and more

With the Kentucky Derby now just three weeks away, our highlighted race of the week will be the last prep race for the Derby in the Grade: 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
We will also be looking at the Oaklawn Handicap, a Grade: 2, $750,000 nine furlong contest also for four year olds and up.
Elsewhere, we will take a look at three Graded Stakes races at Keeneland Race Course. The Ben Ali Stakes for four year olds and up, the Jenny Wiley Stakes, an 8 ½ furlong test for four year olds and up fillies and mares on the turf and the Lexington Stakes for three year olds who are desperately trying for some last minute Kentucky Derby points in hopes that a win or a good showing will catapult them into this year’s “Run for the Roses”.
Lastly, on Sunday we will be examining the Grade: 1, $750,000 Apple Blossom back at Oaklawn Park, another 8 ½ furlong race for four year olds and up fillies and mares.

Keeneland Race Course
Race: 7 (4:24 PM EST Post)
Ben Ali Stakes
If you look up “racehorse rounding back into top form” in the dictionary you might see a picture of Flameaway. The one time Kentucky Derby threat ran a very good third in the Grade: 3 Mineshaft off a nearly six month break two starts back. I really like the way this $400,000 son of Scat Daddy won his last, as he took pace pressure every step of the way while wiring the field. That last race, back to back excellent works since and this being his third start off the layoff, all point to another good effort upcoming. Lastly, I don’t see him having any problems in what is projected to be an off track on Saturday.…………………….Based off his last two races, a win and a fast closing third, both at Laurel Park, Bonus Points also seems to be in peak form right now. The Todd Pletcher trainee draws a good post for his running style and should be coming late in this spot……………………… I know Solomini is quite popular but I’m not a big fan of his. In fact, I believe he is one of the most overrated horses in quite some time…maybe since Keen Ice. Yes, he’s a Grade: 1 winner and yes, he’s hit the board in 9 of 11 career starts but two facts stand out about him to me. 1) He’s won one race since that Grade: 1 win (a span of 16 months) and that was against $40,000 optional claimers and 2) the fact still remains he is 2 for 11 lifetime. This son of Curlin will likely be over bet in this spot. ………….Honorable Mentions: Third Day is a $575,000 son of the corvette looking Bernardini who did well to finish third in the aforementioned Mineshaft Handicap in his last. This handsome colt was trapped behind a slow pace yet finished just a neck behind Flameaway in that race and his one and only race in the slop was an impressive win. Bottom line here is, he could better this rating especially if the track does come up wet…………………The cleverly named Nun the Less looks better suited for the synthetics but note he is 2 for 2 on off tracks. Merits a longshot look if the rains come…………….First Mondays, a $450,000 son of Curlin who missed the break in his last, and Just Whistle, who was a good third in the Peter Pan Stakes last year, both could run well here and neither would be a huge surprise.

Race: 9 (5:34 PM EST Post)
Stonestreet Lexington
Anothertwistafate rattled off three super impressive, large margined wins over the synthetics this year but looked just as good, if not better, in his neck loss last time out in the Sunland Park Derby on the dirt. This $360,000 son of Scat Daddy sat just off screaming early fractions (:45.3, 1:09.3, 1:34.3) before “running on” to just miss the win. Note the :24 second flat internal fraction as it’s the sign of a quality runner. If this handsome, smooth strided colt, who ripped a sensational half mile work for this (:46.4) last week runs well enough here to make it into the Derby (he’s on the threshold on points), no one better go to sleep on him as he appears to have big time talent and would pose an enormous threat………………….Based off his close up, on the board finishes in the Sham, Southwest and Louisiana Derby, Sueno clearly looks next best………………….I really liked Zenden’s Tampa Bay Derby effort at 20-1 in his last. This son of Fed Biz normally assumes a stalking position early on in his races but in the Tampa Bay Derby, this horse blew the gate and ripped off super fast fractions (:22.3, 45.4 and 1:09.3). He understandably tired late but I thought he did extremely well to finish fourth and was only be beaten by four lengths to the likes of Tacitus and Win Win Win. Looks best of the rest here………………..Honorable Mentions: Call me stubborn, but I’m STILL not giving up on the late running Roiland, who has a habit of running well at double digit odds………………Anyone have any idea what to do with Harvey Wallbanger, who wins the Holy Bull at 30-1 then comes back and completely tanks in the Florida Derby? Because I sure don’t. He’s a tough horse to play with such inconsistencies…………If you are hunting a longshot in this race, take a good look at Shang, who is a neck shy of being unbeaten in five starts vs. lesser. Although he obviously will be taking a huge step up in class, it should be noted he ran the last 2 ½ furlongs of his last race in an excellent :30.1, his speed figures are climbing, he handles the wet track very well and the #1 post at this meet is winning at 18% thus far.
Race: 10 (6:12 PM EST Post)
Jenny Wiley Stakes
Rushing Fall is a very special filly. This gorgeous, $320,000 daughter of More Than Ready is 6 for 7 in her career, has already captured two Grade: 1 wins and, had it not been for a questionable ride when losing her one race by a neck, she could be unbeaten. There is nothing not to like about her as she can handle the distance, is adaptable to any pace scenario, handles any “give” in the turf and is 3 for 3 at Keeneland. If you are looking to beat her, which might prove futile, you can use the angle that this will be her first start in exactly 6 months but that’s not enough for me……………………I like Rymska. She is a big, all black (very rare) five year old mare who is 7 for 13 in her career. This multiple Graded Stakes winner could not have looked any better in taking down the Hillsborough at Gulfstream in her last and you get the third start off the layoff angle. Easily looks next best here…………………Bellavais has been gradually improving since October. $485,000 mare by Tapit finished very well in her last and won her previous time out, both at Gulfstream Park. It appears she too can handle a soft turf course and has been on the board in 10 of 15 career races…………….Honorable Mentions: Onthemoonagain is a French invader who has fared very well in all four U.S. starts. Chad Brown trainee could better this rating with the right pace scenario……………Got Stormy came back running off a long layoff when whipping high level optionals. Steps up but that race could set her up for a good effort here……………….The longshot horse in this race is Princess Warrior, who looks overmatched on paper but note her two races on off turf courses were both very good.
Oaklawn Park
Race: 9 (6:22 PM EST Post)
Oaklawn Handicap
After back to back big efforts at “big balloons,” Rated R Superstar has methodically worked his way back into what appears to be top form. Although his rider is ice cold right now, he does like this track and seems to be ok if it rains as expected. …my best guess in an extremely wide open horse race…………………….Giant Expectations disappointed as the 8/5 favorite in the Essex in his last. This 6 year old by Giant Frost chased Battle of Midway and McKinzie two back and wasn’t embarrassed by any stretch, so you know he has ability. It’s the consistency I question as he hasn’t won a horse race of any kind in 16 months. That said he looks next best…………….Quip was up against it when he had to chase the absolutely streaking right now Prince Lucky in his first race back off a long layoff. This good looking son of Distorted Humor did well to finish third in that race and should be tighter for this…………………Honorable Mentions: Tenfold’s claim to fame is running Justify to three quarters of a length in the 2018 Preakness Stakes. This son of Curlin was a very close up fourth in his first race since, handles the slop just fine and should improve off his 2019 debut. Figures close………………Lone Sailor figures to do his normal “drop way back early but come with big run late only to fall short late” routine. Logically, the faster the pace, the better his chances are and the pace figures to be honest in this race……………..Keep an eye on Chris and Dave here too if it rains. Although he seems overmatched, he is 4 for 6 on wet tracks…………..I got to spend several minutes up close and personal with Lookin’ at Lee last year at Saratoga before the Travers. He is a very nice looking, well made horse, but he just hasn’t run to those looks as his 3 for 21 career record would indicate.
Race: 11 (7:43 PM EST Post)
Arkansas Derby
There are a lot of “moving parts” with the big, almost perfectly strided, Improbable, so this race should tell the tale of where we stand with him. His last race, The Rebel, didn’t answer any questions for me. In fact, it seems to have posed more. Let’s start with why he was run down in deep stretch by Long Range Toddy. Was it because he was “parking lot” wide, off a boneheaded ride by DVD, throughout the entire race and, with that being his first race in 10 weeks, maybe he understandably tired late? I don’t know, like I’ve said before, Baffert is the master at sending them out ready, regardless of the situation. Was it the City Zip breeding that is causing the dreaded distance limitation? I don’t know that yet either being he romped, not once but twice, at 8 ½ furlongs before. Whatever the answers are, I know this much….Baffert is not sitting on his hands with this gorgeous colt. I don’t blame him one bit for making a rider change (from DVD to Jose Ortiz) and he is adding blinkers in this spot as well. I absolutely LOVED his last work where, with blinkers on, he sat just off his work mate, passed him on the turn for home and was "reaching out" soooooooooo beautifully down the lane I mumbled “wow” while stopping the clock in either 1:13.3 or 1:14 flat depending on what racing publication you read. This might prove futile, but I am sticking with him until he proves otherwise. That said, this race is a “do or die” for him. He will need to step up right now, in this spot to remain a serious Derby threat………………………….Horse Racing is a lot like other sports in the sense that the best baseball/basketball/football team doesn’t always win, but more of who gets hot heading into the playoffs. In this case, it’s who is getting good at just the right time and, aside from Tacitus and perhaps Vekoma, is there another horse in the country who is getting good right now more that Omaha Beach? After losing a couple of heart breaking, maiden races earlier in his career, this very handsome, very well bred colt (by War Front out of a mare super sire from years ago Seeking the Gold) ran a hole in the wind in the slop to finally break his maiden two starts back. He won by 9 that day and stopped the clock in a blistering 1:21 flat for seven panels. His next and last start was in a division of the Rebel, where he assumed command early, fended off a few others early in the race and then dug in and fended off none other than Two Year Old Colt Champion Game Winner in a thrilling stretch run. The Rebel proved two things. 1) He can handle the route distance and 2) he has the guts of a tight rope walker. Back to back bullet works since the Rebel signal he is holding form and possibly getting better. Big Money Mike gets the leg up……………….The aforementioned Long Range Toddy is a stretch runner who is 7-4-1-1 in his career has never finished more than two lengths behind the winner in his three career defeats. That, readers, is consistency. He draws the extreme outside post which could actually help him in this spot and I love his work pattern since his Rebel upset (8-1) win……………….Honorable Mentions: Although Galilean was passed in the stretch of the Rebel by Long Range Toddy, I still like this very handsome, $600,000 son of Uncle Mo. After annihilating Cal-Breds in his two prior races, this colt, who has a very efficient and smooth stride, did very well to finish third, beaten by less than three lengths in his first try vs. open company and outside the state of California as well. Bottom line here is, he is no easy throw out……………………...Country House is another late runner who, on the surface, looks to be struggling a bit outside the friendly confines of Gulfstream Park but a closer look shows he had legitimate excuses both times. He broke slowly (again) and chased a streaking War of Will two back and, after you guessed it, breaking slowly again, he was ridiculously wide in the Louisiana Derby. That said, this son of Lookin’ at Lucky could be a menace with a clean break and what is projected to be a hot early pace………………….Gray Attempt has won 4 of 6 in his career and is 2 for 3 on this oval plus he recorded a monster work in the mud last week (5F- :58.3). The problem I’m seeing with him is a mile or a mile a sixteenth looks to be “all of it.” In other words, on paper he looks better suited to sprinting.

Oaklawn Park
Race: 8 (4:42 PM EST Post)
Apple Blossom
This year’s renewal of the Apple Blossom features a rematch from the Azeri Stakes with two of the best older females in the land in Elate and Midnight Bisou and this race figures to be a doozy. Midnight Bisou, who I liked since early last year, got the better of it last time and I’m sticking to my guns that she has a world of talent, will continue to get better and have a tremendous year when it’s all said and done. Four year old by Midnight Lute is off to a good start (2 for 2) in winning the Houston Ladies Classic in January and the aforementioned Azeri in March. She “takes her racetrack with her” as she is 7 for 13 in her career while winning on four different ovals in all parts of the country. Lastly, I believe she still holds a fitness edge over main rival Elate as this will be her third start (off the layoff) while Elate will be making her second start in eight months…………………….Elate is clearly the main threat in this spot. Head hunters in New Guinea could see this two time Grade: 1 winner needed her last as it was her first start in eight months. Filly by Medaglia d’ Oro did very well to finish second in the Azeri when beaten by just one length as the even money favorite. When I was at Belmont Park (before heading over to Aqueduct for the Wood Memorial) last week, I heard several folks on the backstretch talk about how she may not be coming back the same as last year after, by trainer Bill Mott’s admittance, “a few minor injuries”. I’ll give her a mulligan for the Azeri but like Improbable this weekend, she needs to improve off the Azeri to prove that theory wrong………………….Wonder Gadot is another who probably needed her first race of 2019 when finishing second vs. optional $50,000 claimers on March 8 as it was her first start in over four months. Another daughter of “King of the (sales) Ring” Medaglia d’ Oro, this filly actually won two thirds of the Canadian Triple Crown (beating the boys) last year and still has that very long and flowing stride, which is especially good when on her right handed lead………………..Honorable Mention: Escape Clause is an absolute win machine while registering a mind boggling 20 wins in 30 career starts. Granted, she was beating up on far lesser competition at smaller tracks for most of it but still that’s quite a feat. That said, she did win a Grade: 2 at Santa Anita in January and could not have looked any better while blowing out her rivals at Sunland Park in her last. Mare by Going Commando (how did the Jockey Club miss that name by the way?), who stands for less than $1,000, won by 7+, getting a mile in a track record 1:34 flat.

****Superstar Winx makes her final career start in the Group: 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Randwick. If her win streak continues, this will be her 33rd straight win and 25th Group: 1. The scheduled post time is 11:05 p.m. ET on Friday, April 12th.

**** Lady Pauline, a half-sister to Lady Aurelia, was an eye catching, first time out winner last week at Keeneland.
Going off at an enormous 1-5 betting favorite, the Stonestreet homebred blew the gate and showed a very impressive speed to win by 9 3/4 lengths, stopping the clock in :51:3 for 4 ½ furlongs.
We’ll need to keep an eye on her moving forward.

****In all my years of being involved in this sport, I’m not sure I’ve seen a stronger book of mares to be bred to one first year stallion ever.

(Spoilers Main) GRRM's Retcon on Maester Gerardys

Acronyms

TWOIAF: The World of Ice & Fire (2014); TRP: The Rogue Prince (2014); TPATQ: The Princess and the Queen (2013); FAB: Fire and Blood (2018)

Materials

There are four versions of the maester's plotline in GRRM's writings.
First, TWOIAF says Maester Orwyle (who became the Grand Maester in 127 AC) cut Viserys's fingers in 128 AC:
Viserys, now in the winter of his years but still hearty, injured himself on the Iron Throne in 128 AC after rendering a judgment. The wound became dangerously infected, and in the end Maester Orwyle (who had succeeded Maester Mellos in the previous year) was forced to amputate two fingers. -early prints of TWOIAF
However, in TRP, it's Maeter Gerardys cut the fingers in 126 AC, and he became the Grand Maester in 127 AC:
Though Grand Maester Mellos washed the cut out with boiled wine and bound up the hand with strips of linen soaked in healing ointments, fever soon followed, and many feared the king might die. Only the arrival of Princess Rhaenyra from Dragonstone turned the tide, for with her came her own healer, Maester Gerardys, who acted swiftly to remove two fingers from His Grace’s hand to save his life...
His Grace did recover some of his old vigor when Grand Maester Mellos passed away and was replaced by Grand Maester Gerardys, whose potions and tinctures proved more efficacious than the leechings Mellos had preferred.
Then in FAB, it's still Maeter Gerardys cutting fingers, but the new Grand Maester is Orwyle again:
Though Grand Maester Mellos washed the cut out with boiled wine and bound up the hand with strips of linen soaked in healing ointments, fever soon followed, and many feared the king might die. Only the arrival of Princess Rhaenyra from Dragonstone turned the tide, for with her came her own healer, Maester Gerardys, who acted swiftly to remove two fingers from His Grace’s hand to save his life... Princess Rhaenyra wanted Maester Gerardys, who had long served her on Dragonstone, elevated to replace Mellos; it was only his healing skills that had saved the king’s life when Viserys cut his hand on the throne, she claimed. Queen Alicent, however, insisted that the princess and her maester had mutilated His Grace unnecessarily. Had they not “meddled,” she claimed, Grand Maester Mellos would surely have saved the king’s fingers as well as his life. She urged the appointment of one Maester Alfador, presently in service at the Hightower. Viserys, beset from both sides, chose neither, reminding both the princess and the queen that the choice was not his to make. The Citadel of Oldtown chose the Grand Maester, not the Crown. In due time, the Conclave bestowed the chain of office upon Archmaester Orwyle, one of their own.
Later, as Rhaenyra's Grand Maester, Gerardys appeared multiple times in FAB during Dance of Dragons. However, his name is never once mentioned in TPATQ. In fact, TPATQ only mentions Rhaenyra had Maester Hunnimore on Dragonstone, never says she had a Grand Maester.

Theory

Why so many versions? Now comes my theory. The stories in TWOIAF and TPATQ are the earliest version: Orwyle served Viserys I and Aegon II in KL, whereas Hunnimore served Rhaenyra on Dragonstone, no place for Gerardys.
But mayhaps when Elio & Linda checked GRRM's manuscript, they recalled a quote:
“Not at all, my lord. Thank the archmaesters of Oldtown, those who wished to insist on Pycelle’s restoration on the grounds that only the Conclave may make or unmake a Grand Maester.”
Bloody fools, thought Tyrion. “I seem to recall that Maegor the Cruel’s headsman unmade three with his axe.”
“Quite true,” Varys said. “And the second Aegon fed Grand Maester Gerardys to his dragon.” -ASOS Tyrion II
So GRRM had to make up for what he wrote in ASOS a decade ago, thought of a story of how Aegon II fed Gerardys to his dragon.
The first solution he came up with, is the version presented in TRP, just renaming Maester Orwyle at the later years of Viserys I to Gerardys. Since Gerardys was originally Rhaenyra's maester, I bet he would be killed by Criston Cole at the the green council right beside Lyman Beesbury's body. And Aegon II would fed him to Sunfyre. His successor would then be the true "Orwyle".
But later GRRM changed his mind in FAB. Probably because he realized Queen Rhaeynra would need her own Grand Maester. Therefore we have the story of how Gerardys became Grand Maester:
Rhaenyra heard these terms in stony silence, then asked Orwyle if he remembered her father, King Viserys. “Of course, Your Grace,” the maester answered. “Perhaps you can tell us who he named as his heir and successor,” the queen said, her crown upon her head. “You, Your Grace,” Orwyle replied. And Rhaenyra nodded and said, “With your own tongue you admit I am your lawful queen. Why then do you serve my half brother, the pretender?” Munkun tells us that Orwyle gave a long and erudite reply, citing Andal law and the Great Council of 101. Mushroom claims he stammered and voided his bladder. Whichever is true, his answer did not satisfy Princess Rhaenyra. “A Grand Maester should know the law and serve it,” she told Orwyle. “You are no Grand Maester, and you bring only shame and dishonor to that chain you wear.” As Orwyle protested feebly, Rhaenyra’s knights stripped his chain of office from his neck and forced him to his knees whilst the princess bestowed the chain upon her own man, Maester Gerardys, “a true and leal servant of the realm and its laws.” As she sent Orwyle and the other envoys on their way, Rhaenyra said, “Tell my half -brother that I will have my throne, or I will have his head,” she said, sending the envoys on their way.” (Struck words only exist in TPATQ, bold words only exist in FAB, the rest can be found in both versions)
Meanwhile, GRRM added multiple mentions (a total of 16, in fact) of Gerardys throughout the Dance of Dragons section, since Gerardys became an important guy now. (Just as GRRM might added some Rhaena references in Sons of the Dragon section after he got a better idea on Rhaena.) He even simply changed other people's names to Gerardys:
She cursed the child inside her too. “Get out,” she screamed, Mushroom tells us, clawing at her swollen belly as her maester Maester Gerardys and her midwife tried to restrain her
“As does Aegon,” Lord Staunton Maester Gerardys pointed out.
Ser Marston surprised Maester Hunnimore Grand Maester Gerardys in his rookery
(Struck words only exist in TPATQ, bold words only exist in FAB, the rest can be found in both versions)
Yet in the end, Gerardys still had to meet his inevitable fate, as Varys had predicted in ASOS ages ago :)

  • This is an interesting issue, since Dave evaluates the landscape of American wrestling and already sees the likely writing on the wall for both ECW and WCW. Raw is expected to move to TNN later this year and depending on what USA decides to do, it could be the biggest break ever for ECW or it could be their death sentence (anybody wanna take bets?). USA Network is still trying to hold up the WWF deal and they aren't happy about losing Raw. USA reportedly wants to stay in the Monday night wrestling business, but they don't want to be in a position of building up a product and then losing it again the way they are with WWF so if they do, they will want to own it. So it's possible that USA might start up their own promotion or, more likely, would buy ECW or maybe even WCW if Turner gets rid of them (more on that later). But that's unlikely to happen and Dave seems to think it's more likely that USA will just giving up on wrestling entirely, and that would be bad news for ECW because they would need to find a new network. As for WWF, there's concern over how ratings may be affected when they move to TNN but Dave thinks it'll be fine. TNN is available in almost the same number of homes as USA and Smackdown proved that WWF fans will follow them to a new station, so he thinks it'll be negligible. WWF has also proven to have the ability to completely turn a struggling network around, which TNN is desperately hoping will happen.
  • And on the WCW end of things, Ted Turner is looking to leave the Time WarneAOL conglomerate, which could be bad news. Turner has always fought to keep WCW when others wanted to get rid of it. If Turner leaves, WCW won't be protected. And it's the worst possible time for WCW, which has been in sale negotiations with a company called SFX, which owns a lot of the major arenas in the U.S. and does a lot of concert promotion. The two sides have been working together and have discussed various things like jacking up ticket prices and selling corporate sponsorships and things like that. And at one point earlier this year, SFX made a strong offer to buy WCW outright, but Turner execs shot it down immediately. It's still expected that SFX will handle promotional rights but they won't be buying the company. At least 2 other groups have also shown interest in buying either WCW and/or ECW. Plus, the Fox Network has been talking about doing a wrestling show for years so they're always in the running too. Last year, WCW lost more than $15 million even though buyrates and attendance were still strong for most of the year. This year, they're waaaay beyond that, with internal estimates suggesting that they are on pace to lose anywhere from $36 million to $80 million by the end of this year. Not a good time to lose Ted Turner's protection (nope, indeed it was not).
  • On Thunder this week, Bischoff heavily hyped a major announcement taking place at Great American Bash and even went so far as to say there was nothing Vince McMahon could do about it, for whatever that means. It could be the SFX promotional deal, which the general public isn't going to remotely give a shit about, nor would McMahon. Or it could be a Goldberg heel turn, because he was reportedly asked to go heel this week. Goldberg is said to be against it and Dave thinks would be an astronomically stupid move right now. But hey, Hogan and Nash don't want to be bumped out of their #1 and #2 babyface spots, so that's why he was asked to turn. No idea why McMahon would give an iota of a fuck about any of this though, so who knows. Most likely just Bischoff using Vince's name to stir up curiosity (yup).
  • In their desperation, WCW has actually broached the idea to ECW about working together. It's something Bischoff and Heyman actually discussed a little while back during the Mike Awesome legal battle, with Bischoff suggesting they turn it into an angle. But Heyman reportedly has zero interest in being involved in a WCW angle and shot it down immediately. Heyman has also insisted that he's not interested in selling a majority interest in ECW to anyone else, but he also recognizes that he can't compete on a national level without far more economic resources and a stronger TV deal. ECW's whole charm is based on being a small-time cult promotion and that just doesn't work on a national stage well enough to generate enough money to keep WWF and WCW from stealing all their top stars as soon as they get hot. Heyman has admitted that ECW is in a tough situation right now because of the TNN deal. If Vince McMahon allows TNN to keep ECW, then they may be okay. But if McMahon wants TNN to exclusively carry WWF, then they're going to drop ECW and Heyman is well aware that it would be disastrous for the company if they aren't able quickly land a new TV deal (and so it was).
  • Pro wrestler-turned-MMA fighter Masakatsu Funaki announced his retirement from MMA this week and Dave does a big recap of his career. He started out in NJPW and then UWFI for several years before transitioning to Pancrase. His retirement came on the heels of a highly anticipated match with Rickson Gracie that everyone expected Funaki to win, but Gracie ended up beating him fairly easily and, despondant after the fight, Funaki announced that he's retiring. It was an interesting fight because Gracie had dictated all the rules beforehand and they were crazy for an MMA fight. No time limit and the only way Gracie could lose was to tap out. The rules were such that the referee, the corner, and not even the doctors were allowed to stop the fight on Gracie's behalf, he could only lose if he quit. Luckily for him, that never ended up being a factor because Gracie dominated the fight. Gracie injured Funaki's knee, which rendered him unable to fight effectively and then got him in a rear-naked choke, but Funaki wouldn't submit so his corner threw in the towel. But it would have been nuts if Gracie had been on the losing end. Anyway, Dave thinks this may lead to Funaki returning to professional wrestling (not until 2009 but yeah he eventually does and he still works in AJPW and and other indies to this day).
  • The 3rd annual Brian Pillman memorial show was held this week, in conjunction with a benefit put together for Brian Hildebrand's widow. Wrestlers from all 3 major U.S. companies participated, as well as some indie guys. The show drew more than 2,000 people and raised over $36,000 for Pillman's family. The show was way too long (almost 6 hours) but most of the matches were good. During the show, Kevin Nash offered $20,000 to the Pillman family if Missy Hyatt were to strip down to her bra and panties for the crowd, which was mostly families with kids. This was unscripted and Hyatt wasn't going for it and kinda chewed Nash out for putting her on the spot like that, but she did do a little dance and flash her underwear briefly and Nash said he would donate the $20,000 anyway. As of press time, the check hasn't been written (it never does, and Dave occasionally briefly reminds readers about it months and months later). Later in the show, DDP tried to raise money from the crowd by getting a local female valet to take her dress off. The star of the show was Steven Regal, who had his best match in years with Chris Benoit and stole the show. Regal's career was pretty much dead not too long ago after being fired from WCW twice and WWF once due to drug issues but he and Benoit tore the house down in what many called one of the best matches of the year. Both men got a standing ovation afterward, with the crowd chanting loudly for Regal. These days, he's sober and acting as sort of a coach for people in the Memphis WWF developmental territory and is in the best shape of his life. Before the show, Regal called it the most important match of his life and boy did he deliver. Several people ended up bailing on the show. Ric Flair cancelled a few days ahead of time, no reason given. Terry Taylor cancelled due to a concussion suffered on Nitro a few days before. Chris Candido and Tammy Sytch missed the show, claiming their flight got delayed and they couldn't make it. Road Dogg, Al Snow, and Jim Cornette all bailed, no reason given, among others. (Here's the full show, or at least that I can find. Regal/Benoit at 1:12:00 mark. Nash/Missy stuff appears to have been cut from it.)
WATCH: Brian Pillman Memorial Show 2000
  • Jim Rome's "Last Word" show on Fox Sports Net this week had 2 episodes that made some waves. In the first, Rome trashed MMA, calling the sport an embarrassment and saying it wasn't a sport at all, calling it barbaric, dangerous, despicable, human cockfighting, a freak show, and more. A few days later, he had Bret Hart on as a guest and they talked mostly about wrestlers unionizing, which both of them agreed should happen. Hart pointed out that even rodeo clowns have unions. When asked about the Owen lawsuit, Bret was sorta mum for legal reasons but he did criticize McMahon for continuing the show after Owen died. As for the Raw tribute show the night after, Bret was also critical of that and especially about the ending with Steve Austin raising a beer to Owen. Bret pointed out that Austin had spoken publicly many times about how much he disliked Owen and blamed him for his neck injury, so to Bret, it felt fake and felt it was an example of WWF trying to milk the show for ratings, by putting Austin on and holding him till the last segment to make sure fans stayed tuned in. Hart was critical of WCW too, especially all the stunts they do and talked about how he participated in (after his concussion, when he was still living in a fog) a skit where he chased after Goldberg in a car and skidded on ice, nearly plowing through a production truck. It led to him having the "I'm a wrestler, not a stunt-man" argument and basically just shitting on how unsafe wrestling has become and how the pursuit for ratings leads to more and more dangerous stuff. Jim Rome, as he usually does, was completely disrespectful of wrestling in general (though he seemed to like Hart) and called WWF's decision to continue the show the most cold-hearted thing he's ever seen.
  • Since being released from WCW, La Parka has been working far more frequently in Mexico, including working some shows for CMLL. During his initial glory days in Mexico, he was always an AAA guy so it's big news to see him in CMLL (he signs a contract with CMLL in 2003 that ultimately pisses off AAA president Antonio Pena so much that he sues over La Parka's name and gimmick, which ultimately leads to him becoming L.A. Park. Also, apparently La Parka got released from WCW? I don't remember Dave mentioning this before).
  • Antonio Inoki spoke out against NJPW's planned Riki Choshu/Atsushi Onita exploding ring barbed wire match which is scheduled to take place next month. Inoki said the match will do long term damage to NJPW (well, he'd know about that better than anyone). He also accused Choshu of lying since he's not sticking to his promise to stay retired. Dave scoffs at the irony of Inoki having the gall to ever call anyone a liar.
  • Canadian wrestler Biff Wellington was arrested by Tokyo police for attempting to smuggle drugs into the country by mail. No details on the drugs but apparently he got caught getting something from Thailand mailed to himself. Wellington has been working for Michinoku Pro but they cut him loose after the arrest and it made all the major newspapers throughout the country. Japan is extremely strict on drugs, so it was big news and it got him arrested and fired.
  • Lionsgate has decided not to release Beyond The Mat in theaters in Canada. It did decently during its first week in the U.S. but fell hard after that. It'll be released on home video in August.
  • Jesse Ventura is doing Jesse Ventura things this week. There was a lot of coverage of a recent meeting between Ventura and former President Jimmy Carter, who told Ventura his mother was a huge wrestling fan and used to go to shows in the Georgia territory. Ventura, of course, claimed that he remembered meeting Carter's mother back when he wrestled there. But of course, during the time period Carter's mother used to attend shows, Ventura wasn't wrestling in Georgia in those days, so, ya know. Also, Ventura is meeting with Antonio Inoki for....whatever reason. And in a Washington Post interview, Ventura talked about entering the 2000 presidential race at the last minute, saying he feels he could win because Bush and Gore are too bland. Ventura's spokesman had to come out immediately after and clarify that Ventura is absolutely not planning to run.
  • Sonny Onoo worked an indie show in Denver last week and was doing the stereotypical sneaky Japanese villain gimmick, complete with throwing salt. Not exactly doing wonders to help his racial discrimination lawsuit against WCW, in which he claims they forced him to play that exact same type of character against his wishes.
  • The latest on Raven and ECW is that he's not in any hurry to leave before his contract expires in August. Paul Heyman is trying to gently nudge him out the door because they don't plan to do anything with him and he doesn't want to be paying Raven's large contract any longer than he has to. So Heyman's trying to get Raven to leave on a positive note, but if he doesn't willingly go, Dave expects them to just fire him before then.
  • RVD is filming an episode of the Pamela Anderson Lee show VIP. He'll be playing an army major who has invented a bunch of radical new weapons or some such thing.
  • Masato Tanaka has signed a full time contract with FMW in Japan. Paul Heyman had been hopeful of signing him to an ECW deal but it didn't work out. Tanaka's deal ended up being less than half of what he would have been paid in ECW, but he didn't want to spend so much time away from home and wanted to stay in Japan, so he chose to stay with FMW despite the pay cut.
  • Juventud Guerrera ended up being sentenced to 2 days in jail and community service stemming from his DUI and fleeing police charges from awhile back. Luckily for him, he won't be deported which was a major concern among people in WCW. Speaking of, Guerrera and Konnan both were injured on a spot in a match they had on Thunder this week. Guerrera injured his ribs and will be out for a few weeks. Konnan was thought to have broken his arm but luckily it wasn't broken. They wanted to do an MRI on it to check for other injuries, but it was so swollen that they couldn't until it goes down. The belief now is that it may be a torn tricep.
  • Tammy Sytch was pulled from Nitro this week after an incident backstage before the show. There's been lots of reports that she was fired but that's not true. At least not as of press time. Before the show, 2 other unnamed women (I think it came out later that one of them was Kimberly) found syringes in the women's bathroom with a vial of Nubain, which is a painkilling drug that has become popular with wrestlers. Somehow it was traced back to her. Tammy was said to be in very bad shape backstage before the show and others said she was in that bathroom for an eternity beforehand. She was supposed to do a catfight spot with Miss Hancock on the show, but after Bischoff was alerted to the situation, Tammy was pulled from the show and reportedly ordered to take a drug test (this of course ends with Tammy getting fired. To this day, I think she claims that someone drugged her drink but you know how that goes).
  • Notes from Nitro: the show drew around 7,700 fans (only 4,000 paid) so naturally on TV, they claimed it was 12,000. Anyway, it was actually a decent show. Kevin Nash handed Ric Flair the title so he's the new champion again, and Dave says they may as well have just mailed him the belt through 4th class mail for all that title means these days. And for, like, the 2nd or 3rd week in a row, Dave says Rey Mysterio was booked for a match despite still not being recovered from his knee injury and once again, Mysterio had to remind them, "Hey I can't wrestle right now" so they changed the match. Apparently, someone in WCW just keeps forgetting and booking him for shit he can't do. David Flair inexplicably came out to save Miss Hancock from Chris Candido. Flair and Hancock are dating in real life and if you're watching Nitro, you're evidently supposed to know that even though it's never been referenced before. But Russo books for the internet fans, so there ya go. On TV, he was supposed to be with Daffney and they turned it into a big thing where Daffney is pissed because Flair is apparently choosing his real life girlfriend over his TV girlfriend. Booker T is now G.I. Bro. Goldberg finally made his big return and challenged Tank Abbott to a match next week on Nitro. Dave says it makes no sense to give away Goldberg's first match back on free TV, but on the other hand, nobody buys WCW PPVs anymore so it'd be a waste to put it there too, so whatever. Either way, word is Goldberg still isn't fully healed so his match with Abbott will be quick. Karl Malone was shown in the crowd and got involved in the DDP segment which got a big pop since they were in Salt Lake City. And finally, Jeff Jarrett won the title back from Flair in a match that was better than it had any right to be.
  • Notes from the upcoming Thunder tapings: Terry Funk and Chris Candido were in a hardcore match that ended up in some horse stables and in a really dangerous spot, a horse nearly kicked Funk in the face (Funk talking shit to the horse afterward is still one of my favorite things ever). During the Russo/Flair segment, a fan threw a chair over the barricade towards the ring but it will be edited off TV. Before the taping, Lex Luger and Elizabeth had a real-life argument with Vince Russo over whatever angle they were supposed to do on the show and it's possible their matches for the upcoming PPV (Luger vs. Palumbo and Elizabeth vs. Kimberly) may not be happening now (indeed they do not and in fact, this was it for Elizabeth. Both she and Luger disappear off TV. Luger returns 5 months later but Elizabeth would never be seen in wrestling again. I'm sure we'll read more about it). And in a funny bit, Norman Smiley went to some kids' backyard wrestling group and pinned their champion and ran off with the belt (I originally had video of this Norman Smiley thing when I initially wrote this, but its since been removed from YouTube).
WATCH: Terry Funk no-sells a horse
  • Remember a few months ago when WCW officials were worried about an incident that happened during WCW's spring break show? There was a wet t-shirt contest that ended up getting really explicit and there were unnamed WCW wrestlers involved. WCW officials were said to be scared to death that this would make headlines because at least a few people there had video cameras. Anyway, in case you were wondering, it finally made headlines. The Globe tabloid ran a story about it and apparently it was Buff Bagwell who was involved and was pulling both the bikini tops and bottoms off some of the women. None of the women filed charges but the mayor of South Padre Island, where it took place, was quoted saying that the city will take steps to make sure events like that don't happen anymore (can't find The Globe story but apparently Disco Inferno and Lash LeRoux were involved as well. Don't think any video ever surfaced).
  • The famous Wax Museum at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco is adding wax figures of DDP and Bret Hart (can't find any pics of those. The museum closed in 2013).
  • Random WCW notes: Lance Storm was backstage at Nitro in full gear doing promo pics. Disco Inferno and Kanyon are working backstage as road agents. Gene Okerlund has been taken off interview duties for Nitro and will be replaced by Pamela Paulshock, but he'll still be doing Thunder.
  • Vince Russo did an interview with WCW Live on their website last week and said a whole bunch of dumb shit. He basically said a bunch of stuff about how all the hotshot world title changes are good for business and talking about how people pay to see The Rock talk, not to see him wrestle, and things like that. It was a big topic of conversation at the Brian Pillman memorial show, with WWF and WCW wrestlers talking about it. The WWF feeling is that it just proves that Russo doesn't understand the business and proves how little he really meant to the overall success of WWF. A few WCW guys defended him, saying Russo is just working the internet fans to get over as a heel. Dave says that would be fine if that was all it was, but Russo's booking in WCW proves that he's not just saying those things, he actually believes them and that's how he books the company. Dave points out that the hotshot title changes have made WCW's world title less than meaningless. And as for the claim that people tune in to see the Rock talk, not wrestle, well....ratings prove otherwise, as far more people tune in to his matches than his promos. So yeah, Dave is pretty solidly on the side of Vince Russo doesn't grasp professional wrestling (more from this in a moment).
  • Notes from Raw: Kid Rock's rappesidekick Joe C was all over this show in multiple segments and it dragged everything down. "There's nothing worse on wrestling than a third-rate celebrity being put on the show and having the wrestlers mark out for them like they are a big star," Dave says. Ain't that the goddamn truth. On the plus side, it ended with Edge & Christian putting him in a garbage can and then beating the can unmercifully so at least there was a payoff. Chris Benoit vs. Bob Holly was an incredibly stiff match and Benoit was insanely over (they were in Vancouver).
  • Random WWF notes from their recent Canadian tour: 8 different women flashed the crowd during the Smackdown tapings and were kicked out. Lots of "We want Bret!" chants during the shows. WWF tried to get Stu Hart to accompany British Bulldog to the ring during the show in Calgary but needless to say, he didn't go for it. Speaking of Bulldog, he's in really bad shape and looks terrible in the ring and Dave says that if it wasn't for the Owen Hart lawsuit, he probably would have been released already.
  • The daughter of Andre The Giant is writing a book about him along with her mother. Dave notes that Andre pretty much ignored his daughter throughout most of her life and at times even denied that she was his (yeah, this has been pretty well covered even in the HBO documentary, that Andre was basically an absentee father. Don't know if this book idea ever amounted to anything).
  • Talk Magazine did a major story on Chyna that was really good. She talked about her personal life, saying her mother was crazy and her father an alcoholic and a con-man who claimed to be a doctor and said that her childhood was basically fucked up because of them. Her father was also interviewed during the piece and denied her claims. Talked about how she got into bodybuilding and says she never used steroids and Dave gives that a healthy dose of raised eyebrow. Talks getting into wrestling, meeting Triple H and Shawn Michaels at a bar while she was training and how Michaels suggested her as a bodyguard for Triple H (who at the time was seen as someone with a lot of potential but who wasn't getting over). She got the WWF job and says she broke up with her boyfriend to go wrestle (admitting she felt guilty about that). Talked about her surgeries. She said she initially had C-cup implants but didn't like how they looked so when she ended up popping one during a match and had to get them re-done, she went bigger and also said she'd had jaw surgery and talked about not fitting the normal stereotypical beauty standards. And finally, she talked about her relationship with Triple H and said she would like to marry him, but admitted that she doesn't think the feeling is mutual. And finally, she said she hopes to be a mother some day.
  • Former announcer Todd Pettingill is claiming he's coming back to WWF soon. Pettingill worked there in the mid-90s but he got a lot of resentment from people because he was a successful radio DJ outside of wrestling and, due to that, he was able to command a high salary during a time when the company was losing money.
  • Letters section has some people writing in to talk about Vince Russo's latest interview that we talked about earlier and it helps because it gives us some exact quotes from Russo said and other topics he addressed:
  • In regards to the Sting/Vampiro feud, Russo claimed that Vampiro losing all the matches doesn't hurt him, "I don't think anyone notices the losses."
  • In regards to titles changing hands all the time, he said: "The reality is every Monday or every Wednesday a title could change hands. The days of a guy having a title for six months to make it mean something is absolutely ridiculous. Those are the old laws of wrestling that just don't make sense in the year 2000. A champion defends his title a dozen times of TV and house shows. For him not to lose one of those dozen times is ridiculous."
  • In regards to in-ring wrestling vs. entertainment, Russo said he'd rather watch Norman Smiley vs. Ralphus any day before he'd ever watch a 20-minute cruiserweight match.
  • Claimed that Vince McMahon is rattled because he knows that Russo and Bischoff are a threat to him. Claims that's why they've maintained a good relationship with ECW and why they brought Mick Foley back at Wrestlemania (someone helpfully points out that Foley was brought back for WM before Russo and Bischoff ever got their power back).
  • Claimed that Mike Awesome never had an ECW contract, which is pretty silly since he most certainly did and WCW paid ECW 6-figures to buy him out of it.
  • Talked about becoming a TV character now instead of just the backstage writer and said he was doing it because he loves WCW and was putting his body on the line for the sake of the company and yada yada. The guy writing this letter is amazed at Russo's ego.
  • Still claims that ratings increased on his watch and that he was forced out of the company the first time due to politics. Of course, Dave has repeatedly proven how misleading and false the ratings claims are. Business did not improve under Vince Russo, either the first or second time, and in fact, it got worse.
  • When asked about not pushing foreign talent, Russo basically buried them all. He said Silver King and Dandy have no talent and that he's never even seen the Jung Dragons (even though they're a tag team that works for his company). He said the reason he hasn't pushed the other foreign stars, he said that in order to relate to American audiences, you have to be able to entertain and you can't entertain American audiences if you can't speak English. When asked about Sonny Onoo's racial discrimination suit, he pointed out that he has pushed Normal Smiley, Booker T, and Ernest Miller.
  • Said he defies anyone to come up with anything creative that WWF has done since he left, aside from the Triple H/Stephanie wedding. The guy writing this letter goes on to give a laundry list of examples.
  • TL;DR: how does anyone still defend Vince Russo?
  • And finally, somebody writes in and talks about why ECW's ratings have been stagnant for so long and says maybe ECW and its fans should be realistic and see that the company kinda sucks right now. He gives a lot of examples of things ECW is doing wrong creatively and makes some decent points. To be fair though, ECW only has less than a year to live and Heyman was holding on to his sanity by a thread at this point. He wasn't on top of his creative game.
FRIDAY: Paul Heyman holds ECW locker room meeting/pep talk, more on Luger & Elizabeth, Vince Russo says even dumber shit than he did this week, Sandman out of control drunk at an ECW show, and more...

(Spoilers TWOW) GRRM's ADWD/TWOW Writing Timeline (It Has Tables. You Love Tables)

Intro

I'm a writer. I enjoy the craft of writing (sometimes). As you probably well know at this point, one of my pastimes is looking at the ways that GRRM writes ASOIAF. I find it fascinating, because, as a #writer, it's good to look at how other writers do it. Given that GRRM is my favorite contemporary author - and an author I take inspiration from - I wanted to chart out whenabouts GRRM wrote individual chapters from A Dance with Dragons and The Winds of Winter.
Fortunately, GRRM's notablog, his website, the So Spake Martin Archive and other internet sites provide a wealth of insight. Given that we now have ADWD in published form and several TWOW sample chapters, we can look back and see GRRM's progress in writing ADWD and to a lesser extent sign-posts for where he was at in writing TWOW.
Just a few notes before we dive in:
Okay. All good? Let's do this.

Charting It Out

Book POV Date Written Chapter Order Link Notes
ADWD Jon I Sometime in 2001 4 Entertainment Weekly Interview with GRRM 2011 GRRM indicates that his line "daggers in the dark" that Melisandre says in Jon's first chapter was written "ten years ago."
ADWD Tyrion I Before September 2001 2 ASOIAF Yuku GRRM read this chapter at Worldcon (I think).
ADWD Tyrion II & III (GRRM had these as one chapter and split them later) Before August 2002 6, 9 ASOIAF Yuku GRRM read this chapter at ConJose 2002.
ADWD Daenerys IX Before February 2003 53 ASOIAF Yuku After he finished ADWD, GRRM indicated that the first version of Daenerys IX was written in 2001. However, the first recorded version of the chapter came about in 2003.
ADWD Daenerys I April 2003 3 Google Groups Archive The first time GRRM read this chapter was in Croatia in 2003. GRRM later published this chapter as a sample in November 2003.
ADWD Jon III-IV Before August 2003 11, 18 ASOIAF Yuku GRRM thinks this is Jon's 2nd chapter in 2003. But he ended up going back to Jon's chapters in 2006 and expanding them out, adding in Jon II and making this chapter into two chapters.
ADWD Davos I Before January 2004 10 ASOIAF Yuku GRRM sends Davos I out to people who contributed to his holiday gift in December 2003.
ADWD Davos II January 2004 10 GRRM Update (recorded in IGN) GRRM gives a progress report on ADWD, states he finished Davos II. He later reads this chapter at the Days of Ice and Fire convention in November 2010.
ADWD The Wayward Bride (Asha I) Before May 2005 26 So Spake Martin GRRM reported having an Ironborn chapter done for ADWD from the POV of Asha. Later, he reads "The Wayward Bride" at Boskone 2007. Thanks to mithras_stoneborn for the link.
ADWD Daenerys II Before June 2005 12 ASOIAF Yuku GRRM had a version of this chapter complete by October 2003, but distributed it in booklet form June 2005.
ADWD Daenerys III Before June 2005 17 ASOIAF Yuku GRRM had a version of this chapter complete by October 2003, but distributed it in booklet form June 2005.
ADWD Jon I-V March 2006 4, 8, 11, 18, 22 GRRM's Notablog GRRM states that he is rewriting Jon's first five ADWD chapters that were leftover from AFFC. My suspicion is that GRRM might be wrong here and only has 4 Jon chapters complete given that he was working Jon III-IV in 2003. Tonally, I think there's a bit of a change between Jon IV and Jon V with Stannis' departure from Castle Black, but that's speculation on my part.
ADWD The Merchant's Man (Quentyn I) May 2006 7 GRRM's notablog New POV set in Volantis is Quentyn as "The Lost Lord" was written in 2007.
ADWD The Prince of Winterfell (Theon IV) or Daenerys VII April 2007 38, 44 GRRM Notablog GRRM was writing about a "marriage" in ADWD. There are three major marriages in ADWD: Dany to Hizdahr, Jeyne Poole to Ramsay (yeesh) and Alys Karstark to Sigorn. I think the Alys/Sigorn wedding was written in the 2009-2011 timeframe as GRRM reported writing lots of Jon chapters then. So, I don't think it's that. It could be either a Dany or Theon chapter. My money's on Dany VII given that his mind is full of Dany, Jon and Q (Quentyn) thoughts just a week prior to writing this notablog post. Given that Quentyn shows up just before Dany's wedding in Dany VII, I think it's Dany's seventh chapter -- a chapter that GRRM rewrote three times.
ADWD Prologue July 2007 0 GRRM's Notablog GRRM read the Prologue at Injunction 2007, was unhappy with it and revised it within a week.
ADWD "Multiple Tyrion Chapters" (But revising Tyrion VI specifically) October 2007 23 GRRM's notablog GRRM indicates in a comment that he abandoned an earlier version of Tyrion VI where he meets the Shrouded Lord -- indicates he has at least Tyrion I-V in some completed form
ADWD The Lost Lord (Jon Connington I) December 2007 25 GRRM notablog GRRM indicates he wrote a Tyrion chapter, and then rewrote it from a different POV. Given that he's writing Tyrion chapters in and around Volantis, this is almost certainly "The Lost Lord."
ADWD Bran III March 2008 35 GRRM notablog In an earlier blog entry in January 2008, GRRM indicated that he was writing a Dany and Bran chapter. This is more guesswork than most of the other entries, but my suspicion is that Bran III is the chapter that GRRM took 6 years to write given its complexities and subject matter
ADWD Melisandre I April 2008 32 So Spake Martin GRRM states that there is a new POV in ADWD that is either Sandor Clegane, Loras Tyrell or Melisandre. (It's Melisandre)
ADWD Reek I (Theon I) Before April 2008 13 Spectra Pulse Magazine GRRM releases Reek I as a sample to SpectraPulse Magazine in 2008. However, he had hinted at Theon's return as a POV since at least July 2004.
TWOW Alayne I (Sansa I) and Mercy (Arya I) May 2008 ? GRRM notablog GRRM wrote portions of these chapters "years ago" and later decided to cut Sansa to TWOW. As for the Arya chapter being "Mercy", the hint is that it was largely written years ago. GRRM later says that he and his editor cut "Mercy" from ADWD in 2009. But then in 2014, GRRM indicates that it was cut from ADWD at the last minute. My guess is that after 2009, GRRM decided he wanted the chapter in ADWD before finally deciding that it belonged in TWOW.
ADWD "The Windblown" (Quentyn II) February 2009 26 GRRM's notablog GRRM talks about writing a chapter from a "new POV" -- one that he's previously hinted at. My suspicion is that this is Quentyn II as GRRM will finish Quentyn III (The Spurned Suitor) in 2010 and had hinted at his new POV being set in Volantis back in 2006. Additionally, I don't think it's JonCon as I think "The Griffin Reborn" was written in close proximity to Arianne's two TWOW chapters in early 2010 as events from the Griffin Reborn inform Arianne's two chapters.
ADWD Cersei II (Maybe The Ugly Little Girl (Arya II)) September 2009 65 or 66 GRRM's notablog It's a female POV with two chapters. It's either Arya or Cersei, and GRRM comments about Arya being in ADWD and "Mercy" being cut to TWOW. Additionally, one month later, GRRM stated that there were two Arya/two Cersei chapters in ADWD
ADWD The Queensguard (Barristan I) January 2010 56 GRRM's notablog GRRM is writing about the Meereenese Knot and decides to change POVs. This is Barristan.
ADWD The Iron Suitor (Victarion I) February 2010 57 GRRM's notablog "Floating off the Isle of Cedars" is Victarion's first ADWD chapter.
TWOW Arianne I February 2010 ? GRRM's notablog "Racing across Dorne" is Arianne's journey from Sunspear to Ghost Hill.
TWOW Arianne II February 2010 ? GRRM's notablog The only chapter in all of ASOIAF that takes place in the rainwood is TWOW, Arianne II.
ADWD Epilogue (Kevan Lannister) June 2010 73 GRRM's notablog GRRM doesn't write chapters in the order you read them.
ADWD Jon XIII July 2010 70 GRRM's notablog "Pat's died a quick death" refers to Patrick St. Denis from "Pat's Fantasy Hotlist" who bet GRRM that the Cowboys would do better than the Giants in 2010. Pat won in 2010, and to satisfy the bet, GRRM wrote Pat into ADWD as Ser Patrek of King's Mountain. He dies in Jon's final ADWD chapter. However, and this is where it gets confusing, GRRM's editor Anne Groell indicated that Jon XIII was one of the last ADWD chapters she read in 2011. Additionally, from the manuscript sample of ADWD, there are missing chapters before Daenerys X with Jon XIII as among the missing the chapters. So, perhaps, this is GRRM drafting the chapter before finalizing it in 2011.
ADWD The Turncloak, A Ghost in Winterfell (Theon V, VI) July 2010 41, 47 GRRM's notablog I'm convinced by feldman10's exposition of who "Fred" is from this comment. Given that it's Theon's penultimate chapter, it's "A Ghost in Winterfell." He also finished "The Turncloak" a week before this and has one chapter to go.
TWOW The Forsaken (Aeron Greyjoy I) July 2010 ? GRRM's notablog It's unclear when exactly this chapter was completed. However, GRRM cuts it from ADWD to TWOW in July 2010.
ADWD The Spurned Suitor (Quentyn III) August/July 2010 61 GRRM's notablog GRRM uses the one of Tattered Prince's lines to Quentyn in a comment indicating that it was "recent."
ADWD The Dragontamer (Quentyn IV) August 2010 69 GRRM's notablog "Yogi" is a Meereenese Knot POV whose arc is complete. Given that he was working on Quentyn in July and often writes POV chapters one after the other before switching to a different POV, it's probably Quentyn's final chapter here.
ADWD The King's Prize (Asha II), Theon (Theon VII), Jon XIII December 2010 43, 52, 70 GRRM's notablog It's snowing on Jon Snow and a pair of krakens (Theon and Asha). Given that GRRM still needed to finish a final Theon chapter back in July and the next entry, my suspicion is that GRRM wrote Asha's final two ADWD chapters late in the process and finished Theon's ADWD chapters in December 2010. As for Jon Snow, his final ADWD occurs with the snow falling and would line up with our earlier discussion about when Anne Groell read Jon's last ADWD chapter.
ADWD The Sacrifice (Asha III) January 2011 63 GRRM's notablog It's a female POV who is a kraken. It's Asha. Think this is her final ADWD chapter he's working here.
TWOW Theon I January 2011 ? GRRM's notablog Theon's 1st TWOW chapter was originally going to be in ADWD and features snow swirling when the door is opened to his cell in the watchtower he's chained to. On a limb, but I think "Theon" from ADWD was finished in December 2010 with GRRM plunging on ahead with the idea of having the Battle of Ice in the book. I think shortly after he finished this Theon chapter, he decided to cut the Battle of Ice to TWOW -- a decision he made on his own.
ADWD Victarion (Victarion II) March 2011 64 GRRM notablog At least one of the krakens referenced is Victarion as a reference is made to "monkeys" in the blog post. So, it could be that GRRM revised "The Iron Suitor", but given that George is less than a month out from finishing ADWD and had "The Iron Suitor" done a year before and given that there's a reference to Victarion hearing monkeys chattering in a dead Ghiscari city in Victarion's 2nd ADWD chapter, I think it's Vic's 2nd chapter. As for the 2nd Ironborn POV that GRRM had to write from, that I'm less certain of. GRRM seemed to be in the thick of Meereenese Knot writing at the time. Perhaps it's another Victarion chapter that was subsequently cut to TWOW. But I submit the possibility that it could be a Theon or Asha chapter. Or maybe it's a Damphair chapter. GRRM had cut "The Forsaken" to TWOW back in July 2010, but the end of Victarion's final ADWD chapter and Moqorro's reading of the Valyrian glyphs at the end of Victarion's chapter corresponds to events from "The Forsaken" or maybe even the next Damphair chapter, especially as GRRM hints at a kraken swarming up from the depths -- something that's been theorized to be coming in Damphair's 2nd TWOW chapter.
ADWD Jon XI-XIII, Tyrion XII, The Sacrifice (Asha III), Theon (Theon VII) April 2011 51, 53, 58, 62, 66, 69 Cushing Library ADWD Archive GRRM hadn't submitted these chapters to Random House by early April 2011. However, they were completed and submitted by April 27, 2011 as that was the date that GRRM completed all writing for ADWD.
TWOW Victarion I, Barristan I, Tyrion I April/May 2011 ? Cushing Library Display According to the Cushing Library, GRRM cut 3 chapters from ADWD to TWOW very late in the process. Given that GRRM removed the Battle of Ice first and then the Battle of Fire at the urging of his editors, my guess is that these are 3 Meereenese POVs. Given that Tyrion I and Victarion I were read by GRRM at convention appearances in early 2012 (Just a few months after he resumed writing for TWOW), and that in February 2013, GRRM read Barristan I and II and reportedly said that these chapters were "new to you, not to him", I'm going to go out on a limb and say that one of these Barristan chapters was among the three that GRRM cut from ADWD to TWOW.
TWOW Daenerys ? May 2012 ? GRRM notablog GRRM states that he's writing about the Dothraki in TWOW. It's not a slam-dunk, but I think it's probable that he's writing Dany chapters in mid-2012.
TWOW Arya ? May 2013 ? GRRM Portugal Appearance GRRM was asked what character he was writing most recently, and he responded with "Arya." Given that "Mercy" was completed years before, it's almost certainly a different Arya chapter.
TWOW Tyrion II Sometime between February and August 2013 ? Anne Groell Suvudu Interview GRRM read TWOW, Tyrion II in August 2013 and had not submitted it either with ADWD or with the 168 page manuscript partial that Anne Groell read in February 2013.
TWOW Prologue 2012-2014 0 GRRM Interview with Zap2It GRRM indicates that Jeyne Westerling will be in the TWOW Prologue after saying in 2013 that Jeyne Westerling would be in TWOW.
TWOW Asha I June 2014 ? GRRM John Oliver Appearance In a screengrab from John Oliver's Last Night Tonight, GRRM's computer showed a partial for an Asha TWOW chapter set at the outbreak of the Battle of Ice.
TWOW Theon ? December 2015 ? GRRM's notablog GRRM was revising a Theon TWOW chapter a few days before January 2, 2016. As he released the Theon I sample chapter 4 years prior, it is almost certainly a different Theon chapter.
TWOW Cersei ? May 2016 ? GRRM Balticon Appearance 2016 GRRM reveals that he was working on Cersei before he came to Balticon in May 2016.

Analysis

I'll bullet-point some thoughts:
  • GRRM writes batches of chapters from one POV before switching. You can see that at work above.
  • 2010-2011 was an especially productive time in writing ADWD and chapters that were later cut to TWOW. A lot of this results from GRRM cutting the Meereenese Knot via the introduction of Barristan as a POV chapter.
  • It's interesting that GRRM expanded his POV roster with each year. Quentyn was the only planned new POV. But then in 2007, he added Jon Connington. In 2008, Melisandre. In 2010, Barristan Selmy.
  • GRRM has become a lot more close-mouthed regarding his progress on TWOW post-writing of ADWD. That is entirely understandable given the amount of vitriol thrown at him while writing ADWD.
  • Finally, my favorite little tidbit: GRRM seems to be most productive between the months of January and August. Now why is that? Hm. Is it maybe because that's when the NFL is not in season? (It should be noted for fairness sake that GRRM wrote chapters during the NFL season, but they seem a bit more sparse than those written outside of the season.)

Conclusion

So, that's a lot of information, but I hope this maybe serves as a resource for some and inspiration to other writers out there. My intent in doing this is not to criticize GRRM for his writing style or how fast/slow the books take to write. It's entirely to look back at the process and gauge GRRM in his own words about writing, looking a little at the history of writing ADWD and TWOW and hopefully provide some enjoyment as we wait for Fire and Blood, Volume One and of course, The Winds of Winter.
